SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
April 29, 2025
“ICE BARBIE'S” BIG MEAL DEAL
She may be the secretary of Homeland Security but “ICE Barbie” couldn't keep her $4,000 designer handbag secure while snarfing down a double cheese and fries at a D.C. burger joint. Oh, by the way, there was three grand in cold cash in the designer handbag, along with her passport, driver license, makeup, medication, government ID and check book. It was literally taken right out from under her. The Homeland Security chief got branded with the “ICE Barbie” moniker after she made an appearance on Fox News in a in full Border Patrol uniform, complete with green hat and top, as well as full makeup and long pearl earrings. She later showed up for a photo op at a notorious gulag in El Salvador in hiking pants, a tight, tight long-sleeve T-shirt and ball cap. Oh yeah, and a $50,000 Rolex in prominent display. Noem likes to put on the dog: when she came on NBC's “Meet the Press” she sported a big cream-colored cowboy hat. What's a Homeland Security secretary without a costume. A star is born. Pretty boy Pete Hegseth, the secretary of Defense, can't hold a candle to ICE Barbie. Of course, Noem has had a lot of practice. As South Dakota governor she participated in the state's “Freedom Works Here” campaign in TV ads where she dressed up as a state trooper, a welder, plumber, dentist, electrician, nurse and construction worker. Make believe is so much fun and never so important as it is in the Trump administration.
BURGESS OWENS CAN CATCH A FOOTBALL
AND TOSS RED HERRINGS
Boy, Utah Congressman Burgess Owens knows how to catch a football. In the 1970s, he was one of only a few African Americans to be recruited by the University of Miami Hurricanes. He went on to play in the NFL for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Raiders that won the Super Bowl in 1980. If that doesn't qualify you for Congress, what does? Well, of course, in Utah you have to be a Republican or not even a Super Bowl ring can get you elected. In 2020, he narrowly defeated Democrat Ben McAdams, thanks to a huge bank roll from the Republican National Committee and his purchase of TV ads that proudly proclaimed, “Burgess Owens is Utah.” Maybe it should have been, “Burgess Owens is a Carpetbagger.” Burgess hates DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — programs that he and his GOP colleagues say discriminate against white men. During last fall's campaign he called Democratic nominee Kamala Harris “a DEI hire,” meaning she got the job because she is a woman and she's black. That's pretty rich, Uncle Burgess. These days Burgess is in lock step with the president and is seeking to codify Trump's executive order on DEI and college accreditation. The “A.C.E. Act” would keep college accreditors from applying standards related to DEI in their analyses. Says Burgess, we don't want “colleges putting ideologies and their thought process into our kids’ minds.” Burgess can not only catch footballs, he can throw out red herrings, too.
POLLS LIE — TRUMP ORDERS PROBE OF “ELECTION FRAUD”
Sinking poll numbers have President Donald J. Trump in a tizzy. “Fake polls from fake organizations” should be investigated for fraud, Trump exclaimed. The latest New York Times/Siena Poll found just 42 percent of registered voters approved of the job Trump is doing, while 54 percent disapproved. A new poll from ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos revealed only 39 percent approved of Trump's job performance. On Truth Social, Trump blasted the pollsters and news organizations. “These people should be investigated for election fraud...” In an Easter address, Trump said that his first three months in office were the best in history. But according to various polls, Trump is under water on the economy, foreign relations and overreaching and disregard for the law. Even his handling of immigration is down to 46 percent. Only on issues of gender identity does he get a 51 percent approval rating. The polling is conspiratorial Trump contended. He called the pollsters “negative criminals” who suffer from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and “are truly the enemy of the people.” The truth, of course, is malleable in Trump World. Things are actually going great Trump said: “When tariffs cut in, many people’s income taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated.” Yeah, that's the ticket.
Post script — That's a wrap for another fun-filled week here at Smart Bomb, where we keep track of efforts by the State of Utah, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County to make Ryan Smith even richer. The billionaire owns the Utah Jazz NBA franchise and the NHL's Utah Hockey Club. Salt Lake City taxpayers are already on the hook for $1.2 billion to help Smith build a sports/entertainment district around the Delta Center. Now Salt Lake County is selling the Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) a large portion of The Salt Palace to help him out a little more. No Wilson, we are not making this up. It's necessary say county officials to keep downtown Salt Lake City from turning into a ghost town with tumble weeds and wild dogs. And, of course, they say it's a great deal for taxpayers because their Ouija Board says the value of SEG's taxable sales to “more than $400 million annually” by 2034. And that's not all: the tax exempt property at The Salt Palace will become non-tax exempt bringing in $4.9 million a year once the area is redeveloped. It's a win/win: Smith gets richer and taxpayers get $4.9 million of the $1.2 billion back each year — which should balance things out in a little over a century. It's all part of a new phenomenon where taxpayers help sports team owners become real estate moguls for the benefit of all. Of course, some benefit more than others, but hey, that's the American way.
Well Wilson, every secretary of Homeland Security should have a theme song, don't you think. We hate to ask you and the guys in the band to lower your standards but what do you say we do a little something for ICE Barbie to send her on her way to even better outfits:
I'm a Barbie girl in the Barbie world Life in plastic, it's fantastic You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere Imagination, life is your creation Come on, Barbie, let's go party
Ah, ah, ah, yeah I'm a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dolly You're my doll, rock and roll, feel the glamor in pink Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky-panky You can touch, you can play If you say I'm always yours, ooh woah Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees Come jump in, bimbo friend, let us do it again Hit the town, fool around, let's go party You can touch, you can play If you say I'm always yours Come on, Barbie, let's go party Ah, ah, ah, yeah Come on, Barbie, let's go party Ooh woah, ooh woah I'm a Barbie girl in the Barbie world Life in plastic, it's fantastic You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere Imagination, life is your creation Come on, Barbie, let's go party Ah, ah, ah, yeah Come on, Barbie, let's go party

I just saw ACE in Miami (it was actually Fort Lauderdale but okay) and it was AMAZING. They're all such amazing performers, it's crazy.
I have little details about all of them that stood out to me. So hehe...
Donghun is an incredibly great dancer, I think all of them are, but I just had never noticed how smooth and well accentuated his movements really are and wow. He's also overwhelmingly handsome.
Wow, he's just wow. May be a little biased here, but boi is powerful! He truly lives up to his name. I can't think of a second my eyes weren't on him. Also, sehyoon mad thick.
Chan is bby. We been knew but ahhhh he was just so adorable. He also completely distracted me during hi touch omg he was first and it's all I remember he's so pretty istg also his head was quite big he reminds me of a funko pop.
Jun is beautiful. Again, already knew but wow? He also got really shy when we wouldn't stop cheering for him to introduce himself and it made me soft. His vocals were also amazing ahhhh I can't believe I heard him sing right in front of my eyes.
Byeongkwan was very bold lol. I love how he could easily hype up the crowd and how much we all loved him ahhhh I'm soft again. I loved his low cut shirt (crop top?) And how he was so unapologetically teasing about taking their clothes off though I really begged them not to lol that wasn't what I paid for, bk, but go off I guess
I feel like a was mean toward chan with that funko pop comment so just to clarify, he REALLY distracted me during hi touch, he was the first one and just looked so good and all happy and bubbly that I didn't have time to process seeing the other members very well and afterwards all I could think was wow, chan's head is big. Which isn't an insult, just an observation. He is the cutest little funko pop ever.

States Sue Over Rollback of Obama-Era Climate Rule https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/13/climate/states-lawsuit-clean-power-ace.html
States Sue Trump Administration Over Rollback of Obama-Era Climate Rule
By Lisa Friedman | Published August 13, 2019 | New York Times | Posted August 13, 2019 |
WASHINGTON — A coalition of 29 states and cities on Tuesday sued to block the Trump administration from easing restrictions on coal-burning power plants, setting up a case that could determine how much leverage the federal government has to fight climate change in the future.
The lawsuit is the latest salvo in a long-running battle over the future of coal and how to regulate the nation’s heavily polluting power plants, which are major producers of greenhouse gases that warm the planet. It also is the most significant test to date of the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate or weaken former President Obama’s regulations to reduce the United States’ contribution to global warming.
It is a case that could go all the way to the Supreme Court. If justices there were to ultimately decide in favor of the Trump administration, it could weaken the ability of future presidents to regulate carbon dioxide pollution from power plants, experts said, and make it harder for the United States to tackle climate change.
“It would have a devastating effect on the ability of future administrations to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act,” said Richard L. Revesz, a professor at New York University who specializes in environmental law, referring to a 1970 law that requires the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate hazardous air pollutants.
The court challenge, led by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, argued that the Trump administration’s E.P.A. had no basis for weakening an Obama-era regulation that set the first ever national limits on carbon dioxide pollution from power plants.
The Obama-era rule, the Clean Power Plan, required states to implement plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2022, and encouraged that to happen by closing heavily polluting plants and instead generating electricity using natural gas or renewable energy. Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is a major contributor to global warming because it traps the sun’s heat.
“The science is indisputable. Our climate is changing. Ice caps are melting,” Ms. James said in a statement. She called the Trump administration plan a “do-nothing rule.”
The battle lines around this lawsuit generally mirror previous litigation over the Clean Power Plan, with blue states and cities (along with environmental and public health groups) on one side, and business groups and the fossil fuel industry on the other.
Previously, Republican-led states and industry groups sued to stop Mr. Obama’s Clean Power Plan from going into effect. They won a reprieve in 2016 when the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the Obama administration from imposing changes.
Patrick Morrisey, the attorney general of West Virginia who helped to lead the Republican lawsuit against the Obama rules, predicted failure for the lawsuit against the Trump plan. He argued in a statement that neither the Clean Air Act nor the Constitution “allow the E.P.A. to serve as a central energy planning authority.”
The new challenge, filed in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, argues that the Trump administration’s replacement, known as the Affordable Clean Energy rule, ignores the E.P.A.’s responsibility under the law to set limits on greenhouse gases. The lawsuit also says that the new rule would actually extend the life of dirty and aging coal-burning plants, promoting an increase in pollution instead of curbing it.
Michael Abboud, an E.P.A. spokesman, said in a statement that the agency does not comment on pending litigation. Of the A.C.E. regulations, he said: “EPA worked diligently to ensure we produced a solid rule, that we believe will be upheld in the courts, unlike the previous Administration’s Clean Power Plan.”
Andrew Wheeler, the administrator of the E.P.A., announced the new rule in June at an event attended by coal-industry leaders, utility lobbyists and prominent deniers of climate change science.
Unlike the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, the Trump rule does not cap greenhouse gas emissions. Instead it leaves it up to states to decide whether, or if, to scale back emissions and pick from a menu of technologies to improve power-plant efficiency at the facility level.
Under the Clean Air Act, the E.P.A. is required to use the “best system of emissions reduction.” The Obama-era options included switching to cleaner energy sources like gas, solar or wind; putting a price on carbon dioxide emissions; or using technology that could capture and store carbon dioxide rather than releasing it into the atmosphere. The Trump-administration rule, by contrast, focuses solely on new efficiency measures for individual plants.
Mr. Wheeler argued that the Obama administration had overreached its authority with its rule and that the Trump administration’s plan was legally defensible. Mr. Obama’s Clean Power Plan was suspended by the Supreme Court in 2016 after challenges from 28 Republican-led states and several major industry organizations.
Those groups said Mr. Obama’s plan was unduly burdensome to utilities and too costly for consumers, a position that Mr. Wheeler also embraced. He maintained that A.C.E. would lead to a reduction of 10 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and provide net benefits of $70 million each year. He also, however, said the new rule could lead to new coal plants being built.
Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California, another party to the lawsuit, called the Trump administration’s rule “toothless,” described it as the “fossil fuel protection plan” and said the rule artificially narrows E.P.A.’s authority. “The Clean Air Act requires the E.P.A. to utilize the best system of emissions reduction that it can find. This rule does the opposite,” he said.
Others joining the suit include Massachusetts, Colorado, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia. The cities involved are Boulder, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, South Miami and Philadelphia.
Notably, the states of Wisconsin, North Carolina and Colorado were all parties to the Republican-led lawsuit when those states were led by G.O.P. governors.
“The blue-state coalition is getting bigger and the red-state coalition is getting smaller,” said David Doniger, senior strategic director of climate change policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group. That organization, along with other groups like the Sierra Club and the Environmental Defense Fund, are expected to file their own legal challenge this week.
Two leading public health groups, the American Public Health Association and the American Lung Association, have already filed suit to block the Trump administration plan.
The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a trade group that represents coal producers, last week filed a motion in support of the Trump administration. Michelle Bloodworth, the organization’s president and chief executive, said in a statement that she believes the E.P.A. has a “strong legal case” but added “we also want to help E.P.A. defend the new rule against others who prefer extreme regulation.”
