Things Will Change (TENT Rotterdam, 6.12.2019 - 5.1.2020) was a group show with works by artists studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. During a two month-long programme the group discussed and researched visions of luck or happiness achieved in the future, leading to new works that explore how to deal with the demand for success that contemporary society seems to ask of us. Through these works, the artists reflect on notions of creation and productivity and their relation to time. The exhibition presented the results of collaborations between the academy students, departing from the TENT exhibitions Boerenzij by artist Wapke Feenstra and Wild Bet by artist duo Gil & Moti.
With works by: Steph Bayes & Izzy Ramos; Noah Commandeur, Rio Drop, Tugay Adem Kader, Valeria Moro & Múz Spaans; Michel Heen, David Jellema & Ryan Lim Zi Yi; Anne van Ophem; Yunwei Zhang.

Interview with Liza Enebeis of DemoFest
Tumblr media
This is my third post about DemoFest because I think it was an important art event that relates to the topic of this blog, gif art.  Liza Enebeis, Creative Director of Studio Dumbar, the Dutch design firm that put DemoFest together, was kind enough to answer some questions from me about the 24 hour event.  Thanks to Josephine van Kranendonk, who was also instrumental in putting together DemoFest, for coordinating with Liza.
(Updating this with an article about DemoFest just published in It’s NIce That)
-----------------------------------------------------
When did you get the original idea for DemoFest?
With DEMO we are paying special attention to an up to now an underexposed but increasingly important part of graphic design:  motion.  Design in Motion is both an artistically meaningful manifestation and a reflection on graphic design practice in a society that has become increasingly image and technology oriented.  We wanted to offer motion design a stage where a diversity of designers can show their work, gain appreciation and influence each other.  This already happens on a relatively small scale on Instagram, but now we wanted to give a motion a platform to a bigger audience - in a public space
Exterion Media, the biggest outdoor media owners in the Netherlands, and our partner, and Studio Dumbar found each other in this shared motivation:  By taking the responsibility of what we communicate in a public space, and using this space to feature autonomous motion design.  By showing motion with an artistic content on the screens where normally commercials are showcased, the viewers are stimulated to think about moving images that are transmitted through various media and in various forms all day long.
Was there resistance to the idea?
No - it was fully embraced.
How did you arrive at 24 hours? Instead of say, 8?
We went for 24 hours so that we could have the maximum reach in visibility, and to make sure that the work was shown more than once through out the day.
DemoFest has a very definite aesthetic. Did you know ahead of time how you wanted the show to look or did you base it on the type of submissions you received?
We definitely had a feeling for direction, but since we had an open submission we wanted to be open to other possibilities and not be strict with preconditions.  We looked at concept, technical innovation, and above all looked at if the piece challenge the paramaters of the medium.  The curators Koos Breen, Xavier Monney and myself (Liza Enebeis) have different backgrounds and expertise so the discussion became quite lively at times.
Do you feel that there is a new aesthetic in motion art that was represented in DemoFest?
I think a lot of the work that you see at DEMO doesn’t come from animation designers, most of the participants have a graphic design background that are skilled in motion - therefore the approach of a lot the work picks up from other traditions.
What has been the response to the show?  I know that ‘Its Nice That’ was involved, but did any other press write about it?
We had an extremely positive response, local press covered the event.  And international press is already chasing us for articles.
How did the people who gave permission of the takeover of the monitors feel?
They were very excited! The day itself was exceptional with groups of bystanders glued to the station screens - mesmerised by all the work that was shown.
Are you planning on having another DemoFest?
DEMO Festival confirmed that there is a need for such a manifestation in a public space and we need to continue DEMO Festival in one way or another.

The Podium by MVRDV – Rotterdam Architecture Month
Rotterdam, 1st of June 2022 – In recent weeks, Rotterdam saw a bright pink city stage on top of the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut become a reality. The Podium was designed by MVRDV and is an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut. On Wednesday, 1 June, it will be opened in festive style by Ahmed Aboutaleb, the mayor of Rotterdam.
Visitors can climb the imposing exterior staircase and look out over the city at a height of 29 metres until 17 August 2022. The Podium is the Festival Heart of Rotterdam Architecture Month for the entire month of June. Admission to the Festival Heart is free.

About Rotterdam Architecture Month
A whole month of architecture with festivals, lectures, tours, exhibitions, films and much more: Rotterdam Architecture Month (RA Month) celebrates the innovative power and quality of architecture every June. The theme of RA Month 2022 is Vista Rotterdam! RA Month highlights the significance of design and design power in a changing city, and encourages encounters and knowledge exchange between visitors, educational institutions and the design sector.
Over 80 collaborating partners are providing content for the programme. RA Month is an initiative of AIR, Rotterdam Festivals and Rotterdam Partners.
About Namelok
Namelok is a research-based, reflective design practice in Rotterdam. Founders Wiegert Ambagts and Kaj van Boheemen work with the team of multidisciplinary designers on projects and research studies in the full breadth of the architectural discipline. They see it as one of the main challenges of contemporary architects to relate to the world (once again) in which and for which they design.
About The Podium
The Podium is an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut, in collaboration with Rotterdam Architecture Month, among others. The MVRDV-designed installation on the roof of the institute provides an exhilarating view and is a location for concerts, debates, performances and other events being organized together with partners from Rotterdam and beyond.
The Podium coincides with the exhibition MVRDVHNI: The Living Archive of a Studio, which can currently be seen at the institute. Het Podium is made possible by COD, Dura Vermeer, Dutch Steigers Fonds 21, Gemeente Rotterdam, Jewellabs, Job Dura Fonds, Mol Lifting, Motel Mozaïque, MVRDV, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Rotterdam Architectuur Maand, Rotterdam Festivals, Rotterdam Partners, Senz, Stichting Verzameling van Wijngaarden-Boot, Stichting Volkskracht, Vriendenloterij en VSBfonds.

Rotterdam Architecture Month News
Rotterdam is gaining a unique, temporary vantage point this summer. Rotterdam Architecture Month (RA Month) and Het Nieuwe Instituut are joining forces to build an urban podium on the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut. Architecture events will be held at The Podium throughout the month of June. The Podium can be visited free of charge via a lift and a giant staircase along the institute’s façade.
The neon-pink installation with its imposing exterior staircase, designed by architects MVRDV, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience architecture, the city, Museum Park and the Instituut from a whole new perspective. The Podium on Het Nieuwe Instituut can be seen as a logical successor to other impressive scaffolding installations designed by MVRDV. In 2017, for instance, the firm placed a gigantic staircase on Rotterdam’s Stationsplein as part of the city’s 75th anniversary of post-war reconstruction, and the Rotterdam Rooftop Days recently announced that it will build a Rotterdam Rooftop Walk above the centre of Rotterdam this year, also designed by MVRDV.

Vista Rotterdam The theme for the upcoming edition of RA Month is appropriately enough ‘Vista Rotterdam’. What are the vistas? Together with visitors, professionals and students, RA Month zooms in on a pleasant living environment and focuses on the essential role of the design and designer in the spatial transitions that society is facing.
Festival Heart Rotterdam Architecture Month Het Nieuwe Instituut will be renamed the Festival Heart of RA Month 2022 for the entire month of June. On 1 June 2022, it will be opened in festive style at The Podium with an opening lecture by a well-known architect. It kicks off a month of festivals, lectures, talks, films, tours and exhibitions about architecture. The main exhibition of RA Month has found a fitting home in Gallery 1 at Het Nieuwe Instituut. With the theme ‘(T)huis’ (House/Home), the main exhibition ties in with the theme of the Day of Architecture.

The Podium will remain open after RA Month for other cultural activities until 17 August. After RA Month, other cultural partners are invited to contribute items for the programme at The Podium.
About RA Month RA Month takes place in June each year and chooses an appropriate new location for the Festival Heart each edition. It is the place where the power of architecture and design presents and renews itself in relation to urgent social issues. RA Month highlights the significance of design and design power in a changing city and encourages encounters and knowledge exchange between visitors, educational institutions and the design sector. Over 80 partners have already joined RA Month. Rotterdam Architecture Month is an initiative of AIR, Architecture Institute Rotterdam, Rotterdam Festivals and Rotterdam Partners.

Me, Myself and I (TENT Rotterdam, 30.11 – 2.12.2018) was an exhibition by artists studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. The exhibition presented the results of collaborations between the academy students, departing from the TENT exhibition Who do you think you are?. During a two month-long programme the group focussed on the subject of (cultural) identity, leading to new works that explored our ways of being, how we perceive others and how our views on identity are formed through the words we use. Many of the works question how language can create meaningful connection and communication with others, but can lead to confusion and division as well.

MONDAY MEMO #03
Good morning!
Welcome to the third edition of Monday Memo. A diary of fun things: new openings I’m excited about, exhibitions I like to go to, products I love, initiatives that caught my eye, news I want to share and much more. All related to hotspots, design and travel of course. Every two weeks 10 things, so let’s go!
  New store in Rotterdam
Susan Bijl just opened her new store in Kralingen, Rotterdam. Perfect to buy yourself a new Summer bag.
    Wild Animals
Until August 5 Rop van Mierlo will show his work at Graanmarkt13.
      New in Antwerp
Chef Sergio Herman opened Le Pristine, a new restaurant in Antwerp. Fine casual dining with a touch of Zeeland and the flair of Italy. Interior is done by Space Copenhagen, known for spots such as 108 in Copenhagen and 11 Howard in New York.
(Image by Peter Paul de Meijer)
  Off to the country side
Gather your friends and go camping at Camp Hox, the seriously cool glamping site in Oxfordshire by The Hoxton Hotels, known for their hotels in cities like Amsterdam, London and Paris.
    (Image via site Camp Hox)
  The Netherlands Guide
Finally also available in print: The Netherlands Guide. Find all my favorite addresses in it. From a coffee bar in The Hague to a hidden restaurant in Maastricht. And from a getaway in the nature of Friesland to a hotel in a former water tower. Get your copy in the webshop.
    Temporary pop-up museum in Amsterdam
Do you have a thing for up-and-coming contemporary artists? Go to Unfair in Amsterdam, a temporary (until August 23rd) pop up museum in Westergas.
    You can see them flying
On my list is a visit to Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam where they show the work of Zoro Freigl, a Dutch artist fascinated by all things moving. For this exhibition he experimented with the movements of birds, so he made an installation and when you look up you will see a flock of birds flying over your head. Interesting! Until October 4th.
  Beach attitude
Temperatures are rising to 30+ degrees this week so we have to get our beach outfit ready. Take this sunset towel by Love Stories with you and while you’re shopping on their site, add a new bikini to the shopping list too.
    It’s freezing in Tel Aviv
To address global warming the Tel Aviv Crafts & Design Biennale displays a highly-polished, stain-steel e-gloo in front of MUSA, the Eretz Israel Museum. Designed by MAGENTA-workshop and on view until February 2021.
