Gouda Girl

Summary: On a lazy Sunday afternoon, Din learns a few things about the Netherlands, and you learn a little something too.

Warnings: None - fluff! Bad puns! Established relationship, nicknames (pretty bird, pretty girl, baby).

A/N: This is for @happypedrohours' Charcuterie Board Challenge – I chose 1A and got Din and Gouda!  I legitimately tried to play around with ways that 'Grogu' could be mispronounced as 'Gouda' before settling on a kind of cheat and writing the story in the Safest with You universe with Modern!Din 🫣  (You don't have to read SwY - just know it's a modern au! If you do read SwY - here's a little fluff before we embark on some angst in the series 🫣) If there are any Dutch people reading this, I love you please don't be offended if I got anything wrong, and shout out to Mr. 604 who did in fact go to school in Rotterdam! “Hey pretty bird, do you know it’s not actually pronounced ‘Goo-dah’?

“Yup.  It’s pronounced ‘How-duh’.”  You add a little roughness from the back of your throat over the H.

“How did you know that?” The truth is, Din is hardly ever surprised by the things you know – you’re generally a fountain of information; what he can't usually guess is how you come to know the things you know.

“The Dutch pronounce their hard Gs with an H-like sound.”

The two of you have very tentatively been talking about taking a trip to Europe, and a lazy Sunday with no definitive plans but to stay in seems as good a time as any to do some casual trip research.  You’re on opposite ends of your couch, you lazing on one end, one knee propped up against which you balance your sudoku book - twirling your pencil as you study the numbers in the grids.  Din’s extended his long legs on the L-shape end of the sectional, with his laptop open on his lap.  Alfredo the dog stretches out in between the two of you, his furry snoot and one of his paws curling over your calf.  Din was just reading an article entitled “10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Netherlands,” but apparently the proper pronunciation of Gouda, the Netherland’s most popular cheese, was something you knew.  Hmmm, he realizes that you didn’t exactly answer his question. 

“Do you… speak Dutch?”

“Ik doe niet. (I do not)” you grin playfully, still not looking up from your puzzle.  You don’t actually speak Dutch, but like a lot of other languages, you know a random phrase or two.

Din scrolls slowly through the listicle and picks a few that he thinks are the harder ones:

“Do you know what the iconic windmills are used for?”

“To pump water from the land.  A quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level.”

“Why is the national Dutch colour orange?”

“The Dutch royal family is from the House of Orange.”

Din smiles - looks like his smart, pretty bird knows all of these.  He’s now super curious just how familiar you are with Holland, and he knows the exact question to ask to get some additional insight. Pulling up a new web search, he asks, “What would you say are some common Dutch foods?”

“Stroopwafels, bitterballen… and kapsalon?” You look wistful at the memory of these dishes, clearly having actually tried them.

Clickity click click tap tap tap.  After a few seconds, Din’s eyes widen at his screen, “Oh wow, that does look delicious.”

Ok, this is fun, thinks Din – he’s not trying to stump you, he’s happy learning new things about this country and you.  And even though you haven’t actually looked up, he can tell by the way the corners of your mouth are curving and the shine of your eyes, though they remain focused on your puzzle, that you’re having fun too.

Click clack clickedy clack.  Din’s quiet for a few minutes while he reads.  Apparently not satisfied, he enters another search and reads through the new results before throwing out, “Do you know what they call peanut butter in the Netherlands?”

“Pindakaas,” you grin, “it translates to Peanut Cheese.”

“Do you know why?”

You do, “They can’t call it Pindaboter because only things that are actually butter can be called butter.”

Din scrolls, thoughtfully, “Do you know that the Dutch are the tallest people on Earth?”

“I think it has something to do with all the dairy in their diet? The Netherlands has the 3rd highest per capita milk consumption in the world.”  The truth is your knowledge of random Dutch facts is super limited, but by some hilarious coincidence Din is asking you the exact few things you know.  You can’t help but continue to tease him – he’s looking at you with a mixture of wonder and suspicion.

“Did you used to date a Dutch hockey player or something?”

“Don’t be silly, everyone knows that the Dutch winter sport of choice is speed skating.”

Again, it didn’t actually answer his question; Din’s sure that by now you’re just playing around, but he can’t help but picture you with some impossibly tall blonde with thick tree trunk thighs named Jan or Piet or whatever.  Involuntarily, he makes a face as he looks back down at his laptop, typing stoically.

You giggle - you’re out of facts and you want to give you big, pouting boyfriend a hug.  You and Din don’t have any secrets about your respective past relationships, and moreover, Din isn’t prone to jealousy or insecurity, but you feel the strong urge to reassure him nonetheless.  Putting your sudoku down, you hold out your arms, “Come here, baby.”

Din closes his laptop and wedges it against the back cushions before crawling over to your side of the couch; careful not to disturb Al, he comes to a rest between your legs, laying his head against your chest as you run your fingers through his soft curls, lightly scratching your nails against his scalp, “My firm sponsors an MBA program at Erasmus in Rotterdam, and I visited one year with my boss to give a talk.”

“Oh cool,” Din mumbles against your chest, “did you have fun?”

“I did!  We were given a lot of tours and did a few orientations with the students – that’s where I picked up a few Dutch facts and a little bit of nederlands.  It’s really such a lovely place - we should go together, Din.”

“We should, pretty girl,” and after a pause, “so, no 6’8” blonde speed skating paramours?”

“No, baby, I find that these days I only have a thing for brown haired boxers,” your eyes full of love when they meet the soft brown pair that peer up at you.  Then suddenly, those same eyes crinkle in mischief,

“What you’re saying is you’re my gouda girl?”

It takes you a beat before you get the good girl pun and you groan, but Din’s not done yet,

“And that I’m the only one who gets to schtup your waffle?”

You roll your eyes hard and attempt to push Din off, “Omigod, stahhhp.” You giggle as he settles more of his weight on you.

“Hang on, I almost had a good one for ‘bitterballen’ – it was right there.  Boter give me a minute.”

You shriek in laughter as Din lifts up and peppers your neck and face with a flurry of butterfly kisses before he gets off the couch.  Once he’s rounded to the other side, he leans over the back and peers down at you, still with a shit-eating grin on his face, “I’m going to get dinner started.  You gouda with that, pretty bird?”

Din narrowly dodges the swat of your book before chuckling all the way to the kitchen.  He’s ducked into the fridge, pulling out ingredients when you remember something, “Oh!  Can we do something new with the potatoes tonight?  I saw this recipe that I think you might like – and we can use up that dill we have.”

You phone is just out of reach on the coffee table and Al’s snoozing head has your lower half pinned down; you reach over by your feet to grab Din’s laptop so you can find the recipe you were looking at earlier.

hi, my doctor has given me a tentative diagnosis of pcos and the only info I can find about it online that doesn't relate to getting pregnant is your Tumblr post. do you have any sources for the stuff about fatigue, vitamin D deficiency, etc being super common in pcos? cos I've dealt with those forever too. things are clicking into place but also with the way the NHS is I don't know if there's much point confirming the diagnosis (it's only diagnosed with transvaginal ultrasound :c) because the only treatment offered seems to be birth control and fertility treatment.

Good afternoon, nonny. Thanks for reaching out to me! And congratulations on getting a (albeit tentative) diagnosis. I know it might not seem positive, but now you know what you have and what can be done about it. At least, that is how I felt.

When I first made that post I never expected so many women to add their own experiences, talk of their their shock, their anger... or just admit that they had been diagnosed for years but that I somehow taught them things they never knew.

It's been an experience and a half. But I'm very glad that I can spread information and if that helps you, even better.

First of all, to diagnose PCOS, you need to fit 2/3 criteria of the Rotterdam concensus. Irregular periods, higher testosterone, and 12 or more follicles on your ovaries each. So, even without a hormone test you can usually tell whether someone has PCOS. Even so, I would still recommend asking for a hormone test if your health insurance covers it.

I tried looking up an English source for you since you mentioned NHS. Do keep in mind that women's healthcare is really not researched well and that there will be sources and information that will contradict one another. Here is one such article about the Rotterdam concensus.

I will however stress that these are all scientific sources and we all know that it can sometimes be biased, and again, not researched properly. My advice would always be to listen to women who have PCOS before listening to a medical source (no matter how professional it looks.)

My Own Experiences & Tips

I've not been diagnosed with PCOS long, but I have been quite thrown into studying it because it pissed me off interested me so much, and by researching (and reading a lot) here are some things that helped me, and I hope they can help you too.

Vitamin deficiencies are common in women with PCOS, especially Vitamin D. What I do is drink a glass of orange juice every morning with Vitamin D supplements. I take Solgar liquid vitamin drops, but depending on where you live they might have something of a different brand. Remember; take it during a meal.

Carbs make your sugar spike, so try to swap out some high-carb foods for lower carb. This way I have managed to lose weight, and this is often recommended for women with PCOS. And if you have a tendency for disordered eating, this will (generally) be easier than counting calories and going on a diet. After going low-carb my blood sugar level (which was high before) went down to regular levels and according to my doctor, I am now no longer immediately in danger of developing Diabetes Type 2.

Exercise! Especially weight-lifting, since it is mentioned it gives you more energy. Since starting myself, I have also noticed a difference. Here is a link for at home work-outs. Taking daily walks is also recommended for your exposure to sunlight and to help depression and anxiety.

Keep a diary of your symptoms. I have a word document with my own diary, so if anyone is interested I will be posting it. Just send me a message :)

Besides this, you do not need to go on birth control if you do not want to. My gynocologist said to me that once every three months you need to have your period. Women with PCOS can have a period 4 times a year, and that is enough! If you get your period less, then you can take progesteron pills for 7 days, and it will start your period. Again; you only need to use them for 7 days. You could do this four times a year and that would be all. Then again I am not a gynocologist so do talk about this with your doctor.

Another thing is that the fatigue could also very well be a side-effect of low vitamin D, B12, and low iron. My advice would be to get tested monthly if you can, and then try to balance your vitamins and see if this improves your fatigue.

And last but no least I recommend Meals She Eats. I made a post about it before, but even if you ignore everything else that is said (they are a bit woo-woo about organic foods and sugars) they still are very informative about the menstrual cycle. If for any reason you are unable to get your hands on the book do reach out to me in my DM's and I can help you.

Catharina Beersmans was een Vlaamse actrice. Zij bracht vanaf haar 12e levensjaar haar verdere jeugd door in Brussel, waar zij op 16-jarige leeftijd debuteerde in de Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg. De eerste tien jaar speelde zij bijna uitsluitend bij Vlaamse gezelschappen. Haar opleiding kreeg ze van Victor Driessens. Hij was het ook die haar in de zomer van 1871 naar Nederland meenam. Haar eerste rol van betekenis waarmee zij voorgoed haar naam hier vestigde was in het stuk Fernande van Sardou de rol van Clotilde, die zij bij Jan Albregt en Van Ollefen speelde in de tent bij de Plantage in Amsterdam. In 1877 kreeg zij een vast engagement in Rotterdam, waar zij al snel uitgroeide tot een der belangrijkste krachten. Haar eerste rol was die van koningin Louise in Multatuli's Vorstenschool, wat deze laatste ook positief ter ore kwam (bewonderend had hij het over het talent van dat "Brabantsch boerenmeisje").

Daarna kwam zij voorgoed bij Antoine le Gras, Willem van Zuylen sr. en Jaap Haspels en zij bleef bij Le Gras en Haspels tot het laatst. Bij dit gezelschap was zij jaren de eerste vrouw. Haar 25-jarig jubileum werd zowel in Nederland als in België, waar zij ook bleef optreden, gevierd. Dat was in januari/februari 1887, respectievelijk als Medea en Jane Shore. Zij had twee dochters die ook aan het toneel waren, t.w. Mina en Pauline Beersmans. In 1980 werd ze samen met haar dochter Mina en schoonzoon Jan Dilis herbegraven op de Antwerpse ere-begraafplaats Schoonselhof.

In Antwerpen, Rotterdam en Turnhout is een straat naar Catharina Beersmans genoemd.

Toen ik gisterenmiddag terug kwam uit York, was het een stuk drukker geworden op de camping. Aan de andere kant van de vijver had een stel zijn tent opgezet, de auto er naast, was daarna 50 meter verderop aan het water gaan zitten en had de audio van de auto lekker hard aangezet. Die ging om half tien ‘s avonds wat zachter en niemand die er wat van zei. Al die tijd dreunden de bassen over het water Blijkbaar hoort dat hier zo.

Dit keer had ik netjes gereserveerd in het restaurant in de hoop op een betere plek, maar nee. Ik zat nu naast de voordeur tegenover de geluidsbox boven de bar. Het wordt zalmsteak, zonder toetje dit keer. Dat zal ze leren. En ga dus nooit gaan eten in Restaurant 10 in Stamford Bridge.

Om 6 uur sta ik op, de zon schijnt al op de tent, die kurkdroog is. Iets over zeven ben ik op weg, de zon schijnt werkelijk ongenadig, de uitdrukking koperen ploert komt in mij op. Ik zweet in mijn lange broek.

Vanaf York volg ik weer een oude spoorlijn, dat trapt heerlijk door, niks geen zware hellingen.

Tussen York en en Riccall fiets je langs alle planeten op schaal uitgevoerd op schaal. De afstanden tussen de planeten zijn ook op schaal. Dus er zitten heel wat kilometers tussen Uranus en Neptunus. Ik heb al eens eerder zo’n project gezien in Duitsland, maar daar waren allen de bollen op schaal en niet de afstanden tussen de planeten.

Om half tien koffie en koek van chocola met gestampte biscuitjes in een tearoom in Riccall.

Wat later begint het te betrekken en ik waag het erop. Ik trek die lange broek uit en breng een dikke laag vet aan. Het is zo ontzettend warm. Iedereen loopt en fietst in korte mouwtjes en broeken, behalve ik, zei de gek.

In Selby fiets ik even de stad in en wordt beloond met een prachtige 12e eeuwse kerk. Als ik binnenloop is een kinderkoortje aan het oefenen, die kleine meisjes zingen best op een hoog niveau. Ik heb een van de liederen opgenomen en zal die opname later op de website toevoegen aan het verhaal.

Vanaf nu heb ik geen routeboekjes meer. Alleen mijn telefoon en de kaart op een schaal van 1:250.000. Gelukkig is het eerste deel naar de brug over de Humber uitstekend bewegwijzerd.

Het wordt steeds zwaarder bewolkt, het is drukkend weer, onweersvliegjes zitten op mijn bril, in mijn oren en in mijn neus. Ik word in Cliffe aangesproken door een Engelsman op de racefiets. Hij doet elke dag 100 mijl en zijn vrouw rijdt voor hem uit in de auto met eten en de bagage. Tja, zo kan het ook.

Ik kom snel terug voor de Pennines besluit ik, maar dan zonder tent en met een aanloop, zodat ik lekker ingefietst ben als de zware hellingen komen. De route is te mooi om hem niet te doen en als ik dan de boot van Rotterdam naar Hull neem, pak ik de route gewoon op waar ik nu afgedraaid ben.

In Howden begint het dan tich echt te regenen. Ik duik snel een tearoom in voor lunch, daarna bekijk ik de kerk of wat er van over is. De helft is ingestort, maar wat er nog overeind staat, is indrukwekkend. En ik bel alvast een camping verderop, Sandholm Lodge Holiday Park, een park met een indrukwekkende website en restaurant, dan zit ik vanavond goed.

Nu heb ik eindelijk de kans om mijn rainlegs uit te testen. Ze werken perfect in een matige regenbui zonder wind, je benen blijven lekker droog en warm. In het dorpje Blacktoft staat een bord bij de oude school. Tweedehands boeken, koffie en toiletten. Ik naar binnen en kom in een donker lokaal met inderdaad het hele kringloopaanbod tegen de wand. De oploskoffie moet je zelf zetten in het keukentje, geld deponeer je op een schoteltje.

Dan nog een half uur naar de camping en wat een verrassing, dit holiday park bestaat uit twee grasveldjes met stacaravans en daar tussen wat open plekken voor kampeerders. Het sanitair bestaat uit twee douches en twee plees en het restaurant bestaat niet. In de stromende regen staat een man zijn voortent af te schrobben met een bezem.

Ik zet in mijn tent op, zie dat Maarten gebeld heeft en ik bel terug. Volgens hem is het niet zo gek dat ik die heuvels niet op kom, dat ligt aan de antibiotica. Ik wil het graag geloven. Dan ga ik even liggen en val prompt in slaap.

Als ik wakker word, is het droog en bloedheet in de tent. Nu of nooit, denk ik en ik spring op de fiets en race naar Newport (en nee, dat ligt niet aan het water). Eens kijken of er iets te eten valt, de vrouw van de camping was er somber over.

Zukunft feiern

PRESSURE VIBES möchte sich auch mit dieser Party gesellschaftlich engagieren. Bei unserem letzten Event konnten Spenden an den Love Foundation Berlin e.V. für ihre Viva con aqua -Projekte sowie an den Studieren Ohne Grenzen Deutschland e.V. (SOG) gezahlt werden. Auch dieses Mal haben wir ein kleines Future -Nachhaltigkeitspaket zusammengestellt, an dem Ihr über den Eintrittspreis oder einen Snack bei den SOGlis mitwirkt. Studieren Ohne Grenzen wird uns mit einer SOG Kitchen und leckerem Food supporten, deren Einnahmen an den Verein gehen. Die next Techno-Generation wirkt auch wieder tatkräftig hinter den Decks mit. OBT, ein Sound -Collective aus Dresden und Umland, ist mit einem Showcase auf dem Sidefloor und special Deko am Start. Spannend wird, es spielen wieder einige Nachwuchs-DJs ihren ersten big Gig bei uns. Excited! Unsere zwei Nachwuchs DJs vom vergangenen Jahr sind engagiert in der Szene aktiv und werden auch dabei sein. Die (apo)Theke Safernightlife ist mit Awareness -Arbeit in Punkto Drogen-Aufklärung vor Ort. Pinke Hände versorgen uns mit Care-Materialien zum Thema Zigarettenstummel in der Umwelt. Unsere Acts reisen klimafreundlich, keine Flüge, stattdessen Zug und Bus. PRESSURE VIBES möchte darüber hinaus vom Erlös in ein Baumpflanzprojekt investieren. Welcome to the future!

Wir sind außerordentlich dankbar, dass PRESSURE VIBES ein zweites Mal im Sektor Evolution stattfinden kann. Nach dem großen Brand im vergangenen Jahr, zwei Wochen nach unserer Party, haben wir dolle mitgefiebert und gebangt. Und so möchten wir unseren Kraftort und Techno-Tempel, die Sonntagskirche und Evolution-Matrix in dieser Nacht mit ganz viel Herz beleben. Let's bloom together!

The human species is now undertaking a great venture that if successful will be as important as the colonization of the land or the descent from the trees. We are haltingly, tentatively breaking the shackles of Earth—metaphorically, in confronting and taming the admonitions of those more primitive brains within us; physically, in voyaging to the planets and listening for the messages from the stars. These two enterprises are linked indissolubly. Each, I believe, is a necessary condition for the other. But our energies are directed far more toward war. Hypnotized by mutual mistrust, almost never concerned for the species or the planet, the nations prepare for death. And because what we are doing is so horrifying, we tend not to think of it much. But what we do not consider we are unlikely to put right.  Every thinking person fears nuclear war, and every technological state plans for it. Everyone knows it is madness, and every nation has an excuse. There is a dreary chain of causality: The Germans were working on the bomb at the beginning of World War II; so the Americans had to make one first. If the Americans had one, the Soviets had to have one, and then the British, the French, the Chinese, the Indians, the Pakistanis … By the end of the twentieth century many nations had collected nuclear weapons. They were easy to devise. Fissionable material could be stolen from nuclear reactors. Nuclear weapons became almost a home handicraft industry.  The conventional bombs of World War II were called blockbusters. Filled with twenty tons of TNT, they could destroy a city block. All the bombs dropped on all the cities in World War II amounted to some two million tons, two megatons, of TNT—Coventry and Rotterdam, Dresden and Tokyo, all the death that rained from the skies between 1939 and 1945: a hundred thousand blockbusters, two megatons. By the late twentieth century, two megatons was the energy released in the explosion of a single more or less humdrum thermonuclear bomb: one bomb with the destructive force of the Second World War. But there are tens of thousands of nuclear weapons. By the ninth decade of the twentieth century the strategic missile and bomber forces of the Soviet Union and the United States were aiming warheads at over 15,000 designated targets. No place on the planet was safe. The energy contained in these weapons, genies of death patiently awaiting the rubbing of the lamps, was far more than 10,000 megatons—but with the destruction concentrated efficiently, not over six years but over a few hours, a blockbuster for every family on the planet, a World War II every second for the length of a lazy afternoon.

Kinderen spelen met een zelfgemaakte tent op de stoep van de Schans, 10 juni 1954. In de verte de gevel van het Prinses Theater.

Op bevel van het Hof van Holland moest Delfshaven in 1573 'sterk worden gemaakt'. Er werden schansen en wallen opgeworpen ter bescherming tegen de vijand. Vandaar de naam Schans.

Het uit 1913 daterende pand van het Prinses Theater is vormgegeven in een neorenaissance-stijl en past met de ernaast gelegen panden in het neorenaissancebeeld van dit deel van de Schiedamseweg. Het pand telt drie bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping. Het gebouw is gelegen aan de Schiedamseweg 19 en wordt door middel van een eenlaagse bouw verbonden met de panden aan de Noordschans 10 en 12.
