#Repost @sar.ra__ ・・・ I say this with respect. Respect that I wish people had of my culture, of Australia’s DNA, the longest continual culture in the WORLD. This year marks 250 Years since Australia was colonized, something that is widely celebrated. But a day that changed my people, the ones that survived at least. Whole blood lines were lost through genocide, addiction and control plaguing our genetic makeup while our culture and identity was stolen and bred out of us. The hurt and trauma you have felt during these bushfires, a natural disaster, imagine feeling that but with its trauma stemming from the hands of another person with the intent to control and take over. Imagine if your whole family ceased to exist, imagine if your language was taken with those fires, imagine if after those fires, you were chained to the nearest pole and treated like an animal. The extent of these bushfires is terrible. I mourn for the loss of the people, the animals and the vegetation. But Australia has chosen, individuals have chosen, history has chosen to disregard the knowledge of my people. We are innovators with over 60000 years of experience in preventing fires and caring for Country. Yet Australia decided to celebrate this country on a day that brings First Nations people hurt and trauma. This is not a post to say that the people affected in the fires deserved it or that we shouldn’t care about them or that if they survived that they should just get over the loss of their homes. And it’s not something that in 10, 20, 100 years time that it will hurt any less. This is about about knowing what it feels like to have compassion, to have respect, to rally together for something that hasn’t specifically affected you but that will help others and bring people together. Australia you have proven that you are capable of caring, of showing up when people need you and being compassionate for those who have lost something close to them. Now it’s time that we show up for First Nations people. Inktober day #20 “cihpolakon” (cheap-lugin)-Eagle. In Wolastoqey (Maliseet) language the k’s sounds like “g”. It is good luck to see an eagle when a loved one passes. I had an eagle follow and protect me all the way through the tenuous after my father passed away. I get to see eagles daily and have a mated pair that nest in my “backyard” near the river.
