I originally had typed up a whole ass angry rant about how fucking awful some of the takes are about Oppenheimer (it seems primarily from people who haven't even seen the fucking film), but I decided against posting it (and then I wrote this which now that I'm reading over it, still ended up being a bit of an angry fucking rant so oops).
But what I will say is that the film does not glorify the bomb or what it was used for. So please shut the fuck up about that. Also, this is a story about J. Robert Oppenheimer. The bomb is a large part of the story because it was a huge part of his life. But the focus is on him and his emotional journey through the film. They are trying to pack about 600 pages of dense material into three hours. There is simply not enough time to go on a side quest to address a lot of the things many of you are insisting be addressed. Especially when Oppenheimer himself was not directly involved in them.
I've seen many people say that this story should never have been told. And, kindly, fuck you. We live in an age where people are constantly trying to change, discredit, or dismiss history. We desperately need more people to become engaged with it again. Prior to this film, there were a whole ton of people who had been so failed by their history classes they had no idea who J. Robert Oppenheimer even was. People still know alarmingly little about the bomb and the scientists who worked on it and if this film allows them to be more interested/educated in that topic, that's a win.
This film brings to light more than just the bomb. It's a discussion on morality and the relationship between scientists and the government.
Also, you don't get to say that a piece of art shouldn't be made just because it makes you fucking uncomfortable. Don't consume that piece of art, then. But you have no right to say someone shouldn't make something, or others shouldn't consume or enjoy it just because it makes you uncomfortable.

Do you guys ever wonder why some people in the napoleonic fandom are popular, or even romanticized to the point of being barely recognizable, while others are not? Why some are branded villains, while the same or worse actions from others are somehow ignored or excused?

It's 4am and I just woke up from a scary looping dream about how a cyborg race takes us over and decides we all need to die, but instead of just watching silly comfort videos to put me to sleep I instead chose to read about the insanity that is barnacles which of course led me to parasitic barnacles and of course that led me to learning about the crab hacker barnacle and how it's just a collection of tendrils inside of a crab body with a reproduction organ on the outside and the males are just a collection of sperm creation cells in the sac and what freaks me out is that this thing is basically a crustacean that's turned itself into a horrifying fungus and I feel like this is forbidden knowledge and that my life is forever changed for having learned or knowing it.
Anyway my attempts at going back to sleep are going great and I am not at all learning of what probably inspires Yames to make his video games and haha also barnacle geese are called that because idiots in the old UK thought they were born from the goose barnacle (no relation).
What even are barnacles????? We just don't know.

Thinking about ATLWCS again reminds me of when I was 13 and read this book for the first time and there was no fandom so to cope with the ending I made an au where Frederick, Werner and Marie-Laure were all friends living in the present day

I watched All the Light We Cannot See and I am still not over it. I LOVE it so much.
(Minor spoilers ahead!)
Might be controversial to some but I actually did love the Netflix adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See despite the noticeable changes done in the show. Usually I'm like "the book is better than the movie/show" but in this case I feel like I loved the show more than the book.
Don't get me wrong, the book is a gem, beautifully-written and inarguably one of the greatest pieces of literature ever made about WWII. There is a reason why it won a Pulitzer Prize, after all. And besides, the adaptation would not exist if the book was not written in the first place.
However, there is something about the show that was really striking to me. It peaked my interest and it moved me. I could not express it enough just how much I loved it. It is a four part mini-series but it felt like I was watching a long 4-hour movie because I finished it in one sitting. It was that good for me. It was also beautifully done--- the cinematography, the soundtrack, the atmosphere, and the acting, especially the acting of Aria Mia Loberti and Louis Hofmann who play the characters of Marie-Laure and Werner respectively. They managed to capture the essence of their characters really well that I couldn't really see any other actor portraying Marie-Laure and Werner better than them.
Hofmann is a perfect fit for the role, he is how I envision Werner and it is a dream come true to see Werner come alive on-screen through him. I really loved how he showed the inner turmoil and struggle that Werner felt about the war. Like he didn't want to be a part of it but he's pulled into it anyway since he didn't have much of a choice. I also really loved the expression in his eyes. There are scenes where he didn't have to speak a lot about how he felt because his eyes expressed everything.

Look at the emotions in his eyes! Such incredible acting from Hofmann.
Loberti also did an amazing job at portraying Marie-Laure and she did so very well that I was impressed that she actually did not have any acting experience prior to ATLWCS. Her being legally blind and actually having read the book made her portrayal of Marie-Laure very genuine and natural. I also liked her relationships between her father Daniel and her uncle Etienne because it looked very natural and convincing, as if they were just family.

What I also really loved in the show was the clear chemistry between Marie-Laure and Werner. I think a part of the reason why I loved it is because I am somewhat of a hopeless romantic, but even if I wasn't, it was evident that they had a connection. Their scenes together were short but I liked the bond that they shared. And honestly the show had more scenes of them together being closer than in the book.
I especially loved the scene after the shooting, where both of them ate peaches and then went up the attic to dance and eventually share a kiss. The kiss was short and sweet, but it still never failed to make me feel giddy and I actually had butterflies in my stomach with how innocent yet intimate it is. I think it was very beautiful and perfect.

Until now while I'm writing this I am still gushing about that part.
And as everyone may know, the Netflix adaptation changed the ending of what was supposed to be the ending that is in the book. While there are some people who were disappointed with the change, I honestly think that the change they did in the show was good. I happened to like it more, since instead of making me sob over a tragic and heartbreaking ending (Werner's death ), it actually portrayed a much happier ending (or at least, a happy for now ending). It also shows a promise of hope, which I think gives meaning to the name "All the Light We Cannot See"; that darkness could not last forever and light is what will always prevail. It's actually refreshing to see the show has a happy ending because I was expecting to cry an ocean, and it's a nice change to see because usually war movies end tragically. It's a good move that Shawn Levy decided to change it, and Doerr actually agreed with the ending change so it's not like the author did not consent to it. God knows that with how much bad things the world has going on with the wars and terrorism, I feel like we could use a bit of hope in our chaos-filled world.
And though I loved the show, I do admit that there were some things that I wish they could have done. I was disappointed that they did not include scenes with Frederick because he was very important on Werner's character development. I also wish that they could have used some French and German words/sentences because it was, after all, a story set in France during WW2 when the Nazis came into power. Maybe the actors could have improved more on the French accent at least, but then it was not really something I take so seriously. Lastly, I feel like it was a bit rushed. They could have prolonged it and added a few more chapters to really integrate the overall storyline well. I still did like it though and the ending of the show was very clear and good enough for me.
But overall, I think Netflix's ATLWCS is a really beautiful and well-made adaptation. I am still hung up on the show that I keep rewatching it. I've been also finding fanfictions to read to quench my need for more Marie-Laure and Werner content. So if you happen to be good at writing, please please please write about this so I could devour it. I love these two so much.

Ah, but you must remember Neil didn't write the oxrib scene. His interpretation of someone else's writing isn't the same thing as trying not to turn something he wrote himself into a bad entendre. 😉
very true, good point i had very much forgotten this, thank you (my kingdom for an opportunity to shake john finnemore's hand. and while im at it, now that ive bothered to consult imdb - andy nyman and jeremy dyson too, i am but your humble 1941 servant)
but i still think there's validity in that if the man is able to recognise sexual undertones in the majority of possible responses to "i just need to find a receptive body", he has some gall to look us in the virtual eye after giving the thumbs-up to ep2, and expect us to believe "sometimes an ox-rib is just an ox-rib" (/lh)

I will literally pay anyone who has read “All The Light We Cannot See” for their thoughts on this show. Because I, for one, was skeptical but ok with it until the very end
And oh boy.
That ending!

Part 3 of the Liochant stuff, this time focusing on the relationship between him and Liochant.
Since I am making Liochant older in this, it may have a slight romantic leaning but it's a romantic one with a purpose.
Their dynamic is A Runaway vs. An Escapee.
Garroth is a runaway, he ran away from his family to avoid his duties as the son of a lord in search of a better life for himself and he succeeded. Him leaving though caused a power vaccum and led to the reign of his brother. He ranaway inspite of the consequences of if he did.
Liochant is an escapee, he ran because he had to. His life had only been bloodshed and being taken advantage of over and over again and he had to save himself. Liochant was not getting any younger and he saw his entertainment value fading with every day that passed. He ran away because of the consequences of if he didn't.
An important thing about this relationship is that Garroth had something to go back to and Liochant has no one. One of Garroths fatal flaws (which is honestly well written in earlier seasons) is that he jumps to conclusions and since Garroth ran away and still betrayed his friends and found family the moment his old life came calling, he assumed that Liochant will too.
This is only added onto with Nicole, who was also a runaway. Garroth is not a naturally understanding person, he can only base things from his POV. He does not know what is happening in Tu'la or anything about Liochant because he already believes he's right.
As the twos relationship progresses however, that changes. The more Garroth learns about Liochant the more he understands a s realizes that they are not the same. What were once stark reminders of who the Tu'la man is from slowly morph into testaments of his companions strength.
Liochant will also be different as he will not take Garroths insults lightly. He is a kind man, not a weak willed one. He is a pit viper, and while never unkind, his words strike true.
I think there will be several moments where Garroth believes he has spotted the "true" Liochant, or at least his version of him. From letting himself be bullied by the villagers to simply going a bit to hard in a spar (its hard to hold back when one is used to fighting to the death) Garroth takes every moment as a point against the man.
The one moment where the image of what he built up for Liochant crumbles is the moment where Liochant actually does attack Garroth. The reason is that Garroth insinuates that Liochant would hurt a child, it will also be the first time he hears Liochants true accent. Liochants accent will always be prevalent but with Garroth pinned against a wall or counter, the only thing he can do is hear the raw low tone while Liochant tears into him verbally.
P.S. - Garroth's turn on is getting put in his place.
Garroth x men he judges too quickly

Random Lucy x Tommy Headcanon
Tommy freaks the absolute fuck out anytime Lucy is sick.
Even just a little cold, he'll be hovering around her, half bullying her into staying in bed and taking things easy, and fussing over her any time she so much as sneezes.
She finds it mostly sweet, even if it can be a little annoying sometimes when he practically insists on carrying her or doing menial things for her when she's feeling better and simply wanted to get up to get a glass of water.
But she understands that it's because after what happened to Greta, the idea of losing another loved one to a disease is a very legitimate fear of his. And while it often gets overlooked due to the other traumas he went through during the war, having to watch Greta slowly slip away when she was ill and die holding his hand was very traumatic for him.
So she indulges him in his mother-henning and fussing. Even if he can be a little over the top with it sometimes.
