Decided to try Fallen London

So, going in I know nothing about this, having learned of its existence a few minutes ago thanks to a meme on this site. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I decided that I'll be roleplaying as one of my ocs in this web browser game. His name is Merlot Blackwing. He's a vampire who works as an artifact conservator. (Think Baumgartner Restorations, but with antiques and magic stuff) Merlot is also gay and in love with the son of a monster hunting guild leader.

I could use some beginner tips. Otherwise I'm really excited to dive into this gothic world.

in short he's a rookie stuck in a timeloop where everytime he dies, he immediately forgets his past loop. so he barely ends up learning from his mistakes but always comes back alive (in another loop)

game dev is such an alluring thing to try to do bc its a kind of media that allows for such an active and direct way to interact with others like most things just dont

im still dreaming of trying it every now and again but, among my other problems, i run into the more unique problem of .. not knowing or not wanting to start bc i cant find tutorials that teach me about how i structure code, where do i begin, where does a script go, what makes sense to seperate into its own piece of code and what should stay together, what do i do first?? i have found ones that teach you about single things but never really how to structure it all, how it should look like as a whole, and idk what mental wall i run into but i need to know before i can even try!! its the not knowing where to start that keeps blocking me bc i dont want to make a mess, i am very chaotic and code is something hard to get right and hard to untangle so i dont want to just .. do stuff that wont work

Noob adventures:

Today Merlot found an easier solution to his injuries in the form of a tonic. Having healed himself, he decided to spend the day at the circus.

He visited the fortune teller, the gondola to the depths, and the anatomy tent, taking particular interest in the male anatomical model. His later encounter with a rubbery man in the same tent, however, left him feeling disturbed and scandalized for even being around such a thing. To make things worse, his fortune included lots of tentacles.

Afterwards he attended the big show, taking note that it's a good place to meet with associates of other people but not speaking to anyone yet.

On the way home, he bought a goldfish to stave off the nightmares of the deep that he'd have later on.

I've reached the Pantheon of the Knight.

After grinding long and hard enough to master the venerated Nailsage, most of the new pantheon available to me was- well, definitely harder than previous pantheons, but they're all fights I've practiced before, and doable with a little dicking around and finding places to heal.

All of which just made facing off against the Pure Vessel such a shakeup. The lengths of its lunges, its speed and brutal power- one cannot meaningfully dick around with the Pure Vessel. In fact, the way it fights forces you to always be meeting its strikes headlong, because trying to move away from it will never be fast enough to dodge its double damage hits. No, in fighting the Pure Vessel, I have to become the valiant Knight that combat with it demands: I do not turn my back on it but go leaping over and through it, and once again we go sweeping past each other in streaks of soul and shadow, blades dancing.

It looks the very image of a Knight when I enter the Dream of it, standing nobly with its back to its opponent. But I suppose it's impractical to fight in a costume. It bursts out of that stupid armor and reveals itself to be the lanky, gawky thing that is underneath, though no less dangerous for it.

It's a beautifully, brutally precise thing, the way my sibling Knight fights. Its lunges are so long and straight as to oblige me to jump over its head; its swordwork sweeps so broadly and quickly that I'm often caught on the backswing behind it. Its dramatic downward strikes are perhaps the hardest to dodge- clearly, our Royal Wyrm of a father has given it the mastery of soul-spells, and those intricately beautiful spell-swords that erupt out of the floor or out of its glowing off-hand must be his design.

Everything about the way one's opponent fights, the way they move, it all says something about who they are that can be read. The Pure Vessel is a proud fighter, relentless and reckless with power. Perhaps too proud, or taught too poorly to defend itself- when it's blocking, baiting an opportunity to riposte, it waits barely a second before it drops its guard, and thus leaves itself open to a clear strike in the moment after. Its FOCUS spell is also offensive, unlike mine, and leaves it standing undefended for long moments during its use.

And no matter how many bright and beautiful spells our father has armed it with, it's a creature of Void like me. It appears and disappears on the battlefield, like my Shade Cloak sends me dashing bodiless through intervening space. That soundless scream. And those Void limbs, spraying forth to lash at its opponent- so this is what you are without the Radiance, my sibling, so purely yourself.

It is an honor to defeat you.
