Depicted as the “sunny indie queen” by BBC Introducing, 21-year-old Genevieve Miles is lighting up her hometown of Birmingham with her innovative indie-pop through previous singles like ‘Magic Man’.
Now, Miles is releasing ‘Storm Before’, her newest single, produced by Carlos de los Santos (Neon Islands, Simple Fiction), she has fine-tuned the balance between sad girl synth-pop and 80s guitar riffs to create her own unique take on alternative pop. ‘Storm Before’ realises Miles’ growing maturity in her songwriting, as she begins to openly embrace a darker side. Taking on more jazzy and psychedelic elements, inspired by the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD and Crumb.
Speaking of this personal and creative development and how that’s essential to ‘Storm Before’, Genevieve Miles shares:
“This song is a special one, it really sounds like my soul. First off, it’s a love song, but looking back at it now I’m also talking about the long cyclical process of healing. “This rain could not compare to the storm that came before last summer”: healing and growth never end and when pain randomly comes up again, even though it’s hard each time, maybe it’s a little different, a little better than the time before, cause you’ve learnt so much since then, you have so many new tools to work with and look after yourself.”
In recent years, Genevieve Miles has become a “staple of the indie scene” (Words for Music), gaining support from BBC Radio, including a set at BBC Introducing Live 2019 in London and their joint showcase with Birmingham Music Awards in February 2020. As proven by her various press and radio support as well as live performances, it’s hard not to fall in love with her sparkling, yet candid, down-to-earth vibe, that defines both her music and live show, along with her band.
The Covid-19 pandemic altered what would have continued to be an exciting year for an artist on the rise, with a headline show at O2 Academy3 Birmingham cancelled along with slots at The Great Escape Festival and Threshold Festival (Liverpool). Instead, Miles showed her resilience by taking part in online festivals such as JACKfest (Union Jack Radio), The Sunflower Lounge takeover and Independent Music News Lockdown Festival.
Her last single ‘Magic Man’ was premiered by CLOUT and received support from the likes of BBC Introducing, Hoxton Radio’s Get In Her Ears, The Rodeo, comeherefloyd and Words For Music, as well as airtime on Australian radio station Phoenix.

[Theatre] Does Kumar50's shades of humour tickle you all over, or just in certain places?
[Theatre] Does Kumar50’s shades of humour tickle you all over, or just in certain places?
I steeled myself for relentless, rapid-fire laughs at “Kumar50”. The posters promised loud and over the top humour in Kumar’s signature style, but that sort of hilarity requires a lot of energy from the audience, something that you need to be prepared for. I gripped and gulped a drink in hand (not a strong one, mind you) as I waited for the show to commence.
Kumar50 (Dream Academy)
Predictably,…
