Part of might also be conditioning. Growing up as he did, it was incredible that Kariya was able to leave the Matou family at all. Kariya did everything for the hope of saving Sakura, but at the same time he never truly believed he could. He was raised to see Zouken as something insurmountable.

To answer your question: A majority of roller coaster trains are equipped with three sets of wheels per wheel assembly. The wheels on the bottom are known as “upstop wheels” (circled in green). These are the wheels which prevent coaster trains from detaching from the track, as they actually run along the underside of it.

In order for the train to entirely derail at the apex of the loop, every single wheel assembly on the train, a train which consists of multiple individual connected cars, would have to either be severely weakened/damaged or, by magical coincidence, become dislodged ABOVE the track all at the exact same time in order for the ride to completely derail. In addition, leading up to the apex of a vertical loop, the accelerative forces being put on the train and its passengers are stronger than gravity, essentially forcing the train to clear the loop. It isn’t exactly plausible for a train to have enough accelerative forces to reach the top of the loop and THEN abruptly screech to a halt in the middle and detach. A train that’s damaged to the point of complete derailment. wouldn’t have enough speed to reach the top of the loop to begin with. It would be fairly for it to partially derail at the base of the loop, though— this HAS happened, but in each case, the rest of the train does not just…magically also have Spectacular Flying Wheel Assemblies. So, while it’s possibly in theory for every wheel assembly to be damaged enough for a ride to completely derail (Note this has happened two times to my knowledge, with both accidents indeed being deadly, but notably, both coasters were constructed pre-1951, WITHOUT modern wheel assemblies and with neither ride possessing a loop as no rides with loops were operating or being constructed within this timeframe. Early looping wooden coasters DID exist, but had all long since either shut down or had their loops removed by this time. It has been over 50 years since the most recent instance of a complete derailment that I can find, with more recent reports of trains “flying off the tracks” actually referring to partial derailments)(EDIT 7/3/23: I have found a single more recent instance of a complete train derailment, occurring in Scotland in 2016. There were, miraculously, no fatalities, though there were several life-altering injuries. It occurred on an inverted ride model, and not during a vertical loop.), it would not occur at the apex of a loop. It would already be difficult for a ride to normally clear its course with even one damaged wheel assembly, let alone with as many as the Cyclone would have had to have.

Of course, I’m aware that Ride the Cyclone is a musical depicting impossible events, that Jacob Richmond has zero reason to know anything about the intricacies of amusement ride engineering, and that the specifics of the crash are not relevant or necessary for the narrative to progress,

But counterpoint: I’m insane.

(As a side note: please keep in mind that I am not a trained engineer. This is based on personal research and may not be 100% accurate, so don’t take any of this as gospel.)

having an actual coaster engineering interest while being a ride the cyclone fan is genuinely crazy like. Did you guys know that it actually physically CAN’T be a wooden coaster. Did you know that it wouldn’t derail like that if the front axle broke, it would likely ONLY damage that front wheel assembly and partially (not even entirely) derail the front car at most, which would cause the train to lose so much speed that it just valleys at the base of the loop pathetically. None of the engineering in the show makes sense. I can tolerate ghosts and sentient automatons but this is apparently where I draw the line. I have to live with this knowledge and I’m being so brave about it
