Tony and reader has strained relationship and they we're not in good terms, Tony prefer Peter than his son but it got change when both of them got kidnapped, they been together for a few days and slowly they reconciled. Soon they got save by the avengers but the Son Reader notice that one kidnapper pulled a weapon to Tony then R save his father, he got shot then Tony is scared to see his son dying. Warnings: Cliff hanger end. It was getting pretty long and I wanted to upload something before bed (which also means it hasn’t been checked but oh well, I’ll re-read it tomorrow) BUT I do plan on doing a part 2 :)

Tony’s relationship with his son had always been strained. Ever since he was practically dumped on his doorstep at 4 years old.

Tony had no prior knowledge that he has a kid, none of the women he’s been with had ever even told him they were pregnant. But if he was being honest with himself, it didn’t surprise him. With the way he got around it was bound to happen eventually.

He just wished he’d known from the beginning.

Having a 4 year old left in his care with no warning put him in a whole new territory he was completely unprepared for.

A baby gives you time to prepare and are essentially a ‘blank slate’ at birth. A 4 year old has experiences, like and dislikes, routines, a connection to someone who abandons them with a stranger…

At the time, Tony was still a playboy, out at events and travelling a lot. As well as CEO of a company manufacturing weapons for the military. He didn’t have time for a child. To break through recently arisen trust and abandonment issues and build a relationship.

He cared about his son. Always made sure he had everything he needed or wanted, a good education and was in good health. But forming personal, emotional connections can’t be done with money, and Tony could barley cope with his own true emotions.

It quickly became clear that they did not share talents or interest in maths, sciences or mechanics. His son struggled especially with maths and Tony initially really did try to help, finally thinking something was in his element and he could bond.

But elementary (followed by middle and high) maths was so simple and automatic for Tony’s brain that he found it difficult to slow down and explain the process to the young boy.

He hired a tutor in his place.

That’s not to say Tony expected or needed his son to be a genius in the same subjects as him. He didn’t need his son to follow him (or his father) to be worthy of his time. But it would have made it easier.

Instead, his son excelled in English and arts, and was amazing in the kitchen. He loved to write stories, create pictures to accompany them and experimenting with new recipes.

Unfortunately, Tony did not excel in these areas, thus distancing them further.

At least he wasn’t taking after his father though. He didn’t force his son into one path or degrade him. No forcing him to grow up, giving him alcohol at a ridiculously young age or sending him away to be completely alone.

Tony often wondered himself if he’d have taken the path he did if his father hadn’t pushed him. If he’d be the same person without the verbal abuse and constant neglect of his father.

He wasn’t blind to his emotional distance and lack of bond to his son. Or to the connection the boy had to both Rhodey and Pepper. He could see that his son was connect to the two people he trusted the most and he was glad.

When Rhodey was available, being in the air force meant he wasn’t always around, he made sure to take the boy out, go to school events and even read his stories, giving feedback and support.

Pepper made herself available if he ever needed to talk and was always willing to taste test.

Even Happy was around to take him where he needed to go, training in the gym and joke with.

So even if the young boy didn’t have a relationship with his father, he had adults around to support and love him and help him through life.

It didn’t stop him wishing he did have a relationship to his father though.

While MIA in Afghanistan, Tony realised he wanted to try harder to build a relationship to his nearly teenaged son.

It didn’t happen.

He returned home and completely changed his company, which required a lot of time. His guilt also led in him to putting on that damn suit and trying to save the world.

And then he nearly died from palladium poisoning.

And then New York was attacked by aliens and the avengers were formed.

And then Tony had PTSD; anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares.

And then ‘terrorists’ blew up their house and nearly killed Happy and Pepper.

And then murderous robots.

And then the avengers broke up.

And then Tony worked with the UN to amend the accords and set up more help and cleaning crews. Back to lots of travelling.

And then…

And then… Peter.

It never eased up and his son turned 18.

His son made excuses over the years. He genuinely was busy and obviously struggled with relationships. Maybe he��s just not paternal? You can’t blame someone for trying to save lives either.

Of course he was aware it isn’t all on Tony, he could have tried harder to bond with his father as well.

But then Peter came along.

Scientifically and mathematically gifted Peter.

Superhero Peter.

Enthusiastic, smart and funny 15 year old Peter.

And then Tony had the time.

He made the time.

For Peter.

To talk to him. Help with his homework and superheroing.

Teaching him. Training him.

They spent a lot of time in the workshop and lab.

Tony was always so interested in what Peter had to say. Whether is was about science or mechanics, school, spider-man or even teenage romance.

It came so easily and naturally to Tony.

He had the time.

Even the team had noticed this relationship and dubbed them ‘Iron-Dad and Spider-Son’.

That hurt.

The time he overheard Clint comment, ‘why couldn’t we have had dad-Tony this whole time?’ really stung.

Tony’s been a dad, to a son, the entire time he’s known the avengers.

He didn’t hate Peter though. It’s not his fault and he’s actually perfectly nice. But to see his father so easily bond with another kid in a short time made him realise that he’d never get that father-son relationship.

Tony is paternal. Just not for him.

His eyes fluttered open, the ground cold against his face.

Wait, ground? What-

A groan passed his lips as he sat up, pressing a hand to the side of his head where pain radiated.

He blinked the fuzziness from his eyes, trying to remember how he got there, but the last thing he could recall was leaving the Stark Industries event after supporting Pepper.

The room was dull and very basic. With stone walls and floor, no windows, one dim light and two metal framed beds so rusty they would probably break under his weight.

As he glanced back down to the ground, he noticed another body in the room. They were still slumped on the ground and back to him.

Scrambling across the floor, he pushed on the mans shoulder to lay in on his back and see his face.

Dad?

Quickly he checked for a pulse and when he was satisfied with the regular thumping, he moved away, letting out a sigh of relief.

With his back to the wall, arms resting on his bent knees, he waited.

It was only a short while later when Tony began to wake. Groaning and sitting up in the same manner his son had moments earlier.

“Oh God, what the hell-where am I?” He mumbled, clearly unaware he wasn’t alone.

“I was hoping you’d know the answer”

Tony’s head snapped over at the grumbled voice to see his son.

“Y/N. What- what are you doing here?”

“hell if I know. Can’t imagine why anyone would take me. I generally don’t piss people off and I’m neither an Avenger or a tech genius.”

“Maybe they mistook you for me” Tony joke, completely oblivious to his sons disinterested and cold tone.

He shuffled back to lean against the opposite wall as his son scoffed.

“Sorry kid, you got the Stark looks.”

“Yeah, that’s all I got” the young man mumbled, leaning his head back on the wall, closing his eyes.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

Silence fell between them until the door opened.

The two men rose to their feet as two armed guards entered the room, a third following with a tray of unappealing food and bottled water.

Neither Stark was acknowledged as the tray was placed on one of the beds and they turned to leave. They even ignored Tony’s incessant questioning and cocky attitude.

His son stayed silent, taking on of the bottles as he sat back on the floor, still not ready to trust the beds.

“Could they just answer a simple question? They got to have a fucking reason for this.”

“Whatever it is I wish they’d just hurry up with it.”

“What, are you bored? Got places to be?” Tony asked, before taking his seat back on the floor.

“Yes, actually. I have an interview Monday and I’m not ready.”

“An interview? What for?”

“Like you actually care.”

“Hey, that’s not-“ Tony began to object but his son looked over at him and cut him off.

“Unless it’s about Peter or Superhero shit, you don’t want to know. You haven’t magically become interested, you just don’t like the silence and unfortunately I’m the only one here. You never cared about what was actually happening in my life before, why start now?”

Tony stared at his son in shock. It’s hard to make The Tony Stark speechless, but right now he had no words at all.

As his son dropped his head back to the wall, looking away from him, Tony couldn’t take his eyes off his son.

Thoughts ran through his head as he examined his son, becoming aware of how little he really did know.

-When did he get so tall? Not tall-tall though, definitely the Stark gene at work there.

-That suit makes him look so grown up, even if those a-holes took our jackets and shoes. Why did they take our shoes? No. Not important. Focus.

-I care about my son. Come on Tony, think. Something.

-School? Crap, when did I last even read a report card? He’s always aced English. Didn’t he do band? No, shit, that was Peter. Goddamnit, is he right?

“You’re 18.”

“Well done. You want a medal?”

“Is the interview for college?”

His son still didn’t move, wouldn’t even look at him.

“Please, Y/N. I-I know I’ve not really been… present in your life. But I do care about you.”

“Do you?” His eyes burned long repressed anger and Tony prepared himself for everything that was coming. He knew he’d deserve it too.

“You gave up so easily. It was too hard to bond with your idiot son, a shy kid who couldn’t understand simple maths. You’d rather be with women and go to parties, and the company always came first. All you did was throw money at things. For year I was fine with it, you using money to help me. I had more than more. It was clear you struggled with relationships of any kind and I was just dumped on you with no warning. It was fine because I had Rhodey, Pepper and Happy. They were there to talk to, they taught me things and supported me, Rhodey would go to school events whenever he could. I just figured maybe you’re not a paternal person. Then you became Iron Man and started saving the world and I can’t be mad about that.”

Tony stayed silent and watched as his son stood up, running a hand through his hair as he began to pace.

“Then you met Harley and kept in touch with him. You upgraded his garage into a high-tech lab. But he did help you save Pepper and the President so I guess you owed him and I didn’t let it bother me. It wasn’t until Peter came along that I noticed that you are one of the most naturally paternal people I know. You became his father figure, took him in so quickly, bonding immediately. If he needed help, you were there. He wanted to talk, you listened. Whether it’s out being Iron Man and Spider-man, training him, helping him with his school work or just locking yourselves in the workshop for hours building new shit. You’re always there for him. He witters on about some stupid crush for 25 minutes and you hang on every word. But you couldn’t do that for me?! What, did I need to be a genius at maths?! Interested in building extravagant technology?! Would you have noticed me then? You know, you went to Peter’s science show last month but you’ve never been to any of my school events. It was always Rhodey, Pepper and Happy a couple times, or no-one. But never you.”

The young man stared at his father, chest heaving, eyes burning as he held back tears. Yet Tony said nothing. He couldn’t take his eyes off his son. Lips parted and eyes glistening with unshed tears, he just sat, no words coming out.

“Yeah I’m 18 any yeah it’s a college interview. I graduate in a few weeks, Rhodey’s going. I’ve already been accepted to a couple colleges. Only a few months and I can leave.”

He didn’t give Tony a chance to respond as he risked the bed, laying down and facing the wall as he focused on bringing his breathing back to normal.

Behind him, his father watched on as tears fell down his face, guilt taking over his whole being.

Neither of them spoke for the rest of the night. While his son eventually fell asleep, Tony stayed on the floor, thinking through everything his son told him and looking back over the years.

The following morning, two guard came in and took Tony away.

They brought him back a few hours later, unharmed. The younger Stark watched as Tony worried his bottom lip and fussed with his clothes. He noted the troubled look on his father’s face and it was clear that whatever the kidnappers told him wasn’t good at all.

But he remained silent.

Eventually Tony settled, sitting on the floor again. But the two still didn’t speak for a few more hours.

“I’m sorry,” Tony finally broke through the silence and tense atmosphere of the confined space.

His son remained silent but his eyes moved up to look at him. This was enough of an acknowledgement that he was listening and so Tony continued.

“You might not believe that, but I am. I don’t know why it was so hard or why it was so easy with Peter. I didn’t- It wasn’t intentional, I didn’t even realise.”

The young Stark kept his eyes on his father but his face stayed blank and lips sealed.

“And you know, just because maths and science subjects didn’t come naturally to you doesn’t mean you’re an idiot. I’ve never once thought you were. I know the Stark name has become so tied to them, mechanics, advanced technology and engineering… but it doesn’t mean you’re not…good enough? Because you don’t follow that. I never thought you should have been, it didn’t-didn’t disappoint me or anything. But you were always so talented in arts, you wrote the most amazing stories and a complete natural in the kitchen. Things I’m not so great at. It just made it harder for me to figure out how to connect. I didn’t know where to start.”

A small smile flashed across his face, eyes glazed as he recalled the past.

“Y’know, I loved those stories about the uh, the dragons that live on your shoulder. I’d find drawings and paintings of them all over the house, and it was a big house!”

Across from him, his son’s head raised a little higher, eyebrows subtly furrowing and looked at the soft expression on his father’s face. He had no idea Tony even know about those.

“I should have been there, tried harder. There’s no excuse for that. But I have always cared. You were just so talented in things I didn’t understand. Then I saw how close you and Rhodey became and-“

Tony let out a sigh, looking away from his son.

“You were left with me, an egotistical ass and a- a playboy. I didn’t think I deserved you. You deserved someone better. Someone emotionally available and mature. Someone to help you grow into an amazing person and progress your talents. Someone like Rhodey. He deserved you and you him. He was -and is- better for you. You were loved and supported by him, and then Pepper and Happy, so I – I thought you’d be ok. That you wouldn’t need me.”

Once again it was all quiet in the small room. This time Tony wouldn’t look at his son, but he couldn’t take his eyes off his father.

“I did need you.”

His voice was raspy as he admitted this to not only Tony but himself.

“Rhodey’s the best. I love him. Couldn’t have asked for a better Uncle. But that’s what he is; my Uncle. You were supposed to be my Dad. I shouldn’t have had a father figure when my father was right there. You were so cool, before and after becoming Iron Man. You made everything around you seem like fun. I didn’t understand the tech crap but- I’m an artist. I can, and did, design things. It’s not all on you, I didn’t make it easy.”

“You were a kid, it is on me. But, maybe- When we get out of here I’ll do better. I want to be an active part in your life. I also understand if it’s too late though.”

“It’s not. It’ll take time but, I’d like that. Rhodey might get jealous though.”

A huffed laugh slipped past Tony’s lips as they spread into a smile on his face when his son cracked a grin.

They continued to talk into the night, about school, which colleges and courses, friends and dating. Once they started they couldn’t stop.

It is hard to shut up a Stark.

They were laughing about one of Tony’s stories of his time in MIT with Rhodey when an explosion shook the room.

The men stood up and faced the door as the sounds of fighting and yelling grew nearer. A smirk spread on Tony’s face as he recognised the noises of his teammates.

It wasn’t long before the door was broken down and Captain America stood in it’s place.

“Bout damn time. Did you stop for coffee?”

“Yeah, yeah, tin man. You’re welcome.” Hawkeye quipped as they walked down the halls.

Rhodey broke through to get to his nephew’s side, checking him over and ensuring he was ok.

Tony led the group to the main room. The kidnappers had access to files and tech that would be too dangerous to leave.

As Tony wiped everything, quips flowing between him and his teammates, none of them noticed the man sneak in through another door.

The younger Stark moved before his brain could even process what was happening, placing himself between his father and the gun that was raised to his back.

born as the youngest child of a nurse & a teacher, hyejin’s childhood was nothing out of the ordinary. her love for music had always been apparent — her mother noticing early on that, whenever her daughter was throwing a hissy fit, all she had to do was play some classical music in order to get her to calm down

hence, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that her father decided to teach her how to play the piano at the age of 6. & by the age of 9 she was labeled a child prodigy. hyejin would often participate in competitions, attend music camps, & play in front of anyone who was willing to listen. her talent was undeniable, truly

in the years to follow she would pick up other instruments here & there ( violin, guitar, french horn ), but nothing seemed to stick as much as piano did. hyejin would also dabble in writing her own music, often with the help of her father

& if there’s one thing hyejin learned it’s that practice makes perfect. by the age of 11 she managed to become an extremely valuable asset for her school’s yearly musicals as she composed about 60% of the songs performed <33

she went viral on social media a few times as well, her youtube channel accumulating about 1.6M views by her 4th upload. she would frequently get interviewed around that time as well, with professionals often commenting on hyejin’s bright future

so when their uni announced a proposal of a student being able to apply for an internship that would skyrocket their careers right into stardom, hyejin was well aware this was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed. her boyfriend mentioned how he wouldn’t apply, seeing his father could offer him a job easily, but mentioned how she should send her work to him so he could look it over & help her out

crestfallen & humiliated, hyejin accepted the fact that it would be simply too embarrassing to submit the sheets of music she’d written. it was two weeks later that her boyfriend abruptly ghosted her, only for her to find out he’d gotten the internship by applying with the composed music she sent him. he denied any claims of stealing, & when hyejin told her professor about the situation he basically wrote it off as well

she took up multiple side jobs to get her music out there again, while also trying to push past the writer’s block she experienced due to stress. on week days she would give rich kids piano lessons after uni & bloom under the praises their parents would give her skills. on the weekends she would play at a 5 star restaurant, hoping the right people would discover her there

having lost the comfort music once gave her, hyejin decided to take up a job as a florist & keeps herself busy tending to flowers. it isn’t her ideal career plan, but at least she’s moving forward with her life

throughout the years she kept uploading videos of her playing piano on youtube, each video getting about 900k views on average. it allows her to be fairly recognizable on her own accord, although most of her fame comes from being associated with her brother. she’s starting to climb in popularity, though, spending some of her time to focus on crafting a stronger social media presence

Monday morning, Alya was waiting for Marinette by the school’s entrance, like she usually did, while busy viewing and reviewing her the video she had uploaded a few days before. The video about Captain Marvel’s arrival in Paris.

Not a moment later, the aspiring reporter noticed her best friend, Marinette, running to school as usual.

“Come on girl!” Alya gestured at Marinette. “Hurry up!”

Not before long, Marinette arrived on school, just in time for her trip unto a lone rock in the sidewalk into the hands of one model, Adrien Agreste.

“Nice catch sunshine!” Alya praised.

“H-hey A-adrien. Marinette greeted, still on Adrien’s arms. “T-thank you for ca-catching me.” She expressed her gratitude while picking herself up clumsily.

“You’re welcome.” Adrien smiled. “You should really be careful.” He cautioned his friend.

“Seriously girl you need to watch where you’re walking.” Alya teased. “Or was that intentional on your part?” She whispered.

“Alya!” Marinette pouted. “You already know that’s not the case.” She hissed as she and her best friend walked towards their classroom.

“What’s not the case?” Adrien’s questioned as he walked behind the two ladies.

“Oh you know.” Alya shrugged. “How there’s now three heroes in Paris at the moment.” She stated as she played the video of her interview with Captain Marvel.

“I am kinda surprised that he still defends the Justice League.” Marinette voiced out. “After Superman refused to take his suggestion into account and got into an all-out brawl.”

“Girl! You’re well informed!” Alya praised. “How’d you know that?”

“I kinda checked up on Captain Marvel after watching your interview with him.” Marinette admitted.

“Neither the Justice League nor the Marvel Family confirmed why he left though.” Adrien hummed. “I just thought that he didn’t have time to be a member of both groups.”

“Still it’s kinda baffling how he knows a lot about the Miraculous.” Alya hummed. “Both Ladybug and Chat Noir had yet to comment about the Miraculous and this new guy shows up and gives more info than our local heroes have told us.”

“Maybe he’s one of the guardians?” Marinette offered.

“But he doesn’t have the symbol that the previous Miraculoous heroes had.” Alya pointed out.

Before Marinette could even reply, the three of them had already arrived by their room. They proceeded to their sits, Marinette beside Alya and Adrien just in front of Marinette.

“Okay class we’re going to have a transfer student in class.” Mme Mendeleieve started. “Mme Bustier has called in sick and I’ll be your substitute for today.” She explained her presence. “M Batson if you would.”

A boy in a red sweater and blue jeans went inside the room and stood in front of the class.

“Good Morning Everyone, I’m William Joseph Batson, I came from Fawcett City and I’m here for the exchange student program.” He informed the whole class. “It’s nice to meet you all.”

“M Batson if you have any questions, you can ask the Class Representative.” Mme Menedeleive informed the new student.

“Marinette, please help M Batson around.

“Yes Mme Mendeleieve.” Marinette stood and approached the new boy.

“Hi!” Marinette greeted. “I’m Marinette.” She introduced herself.

“William Joseph Batson.” Billy returned the favor.” Just call me Billy.” He smiled at girl.

“M Batson, you can sit beside Mme Lila Rossi.” The teacher instructed. “Lila please raise your hand.”

The girl in question didn’t even hesitate and raised her hand gleefully.

“Marinette, please escort M Batson to his seat.” The teacher continued.

“Right this way Billy.” Marinette instructed the new student and offered her hand.

“Thank you Mme Dupain-Cheng.” Billy expressed his gratitude.

“Just call me Marinette.” Marinette smiled.

“Well then.” Billy grinned back. “Thank you Marinette.”

“You’re Welcome.” Marinette responded. “You can approach me during lunch if you have any questions or want me to tour the school with you.”

As soon as Billy was seated, Marinette, although filled with pity for the new boy, left him as the teacher reviewed their lessons before starting a new lesson.

“You’re from Fawcett City, right Billy?” The girl beside him asked. “Did you know that Captain Marvel and I were best friends?” She shared. “Well his wife and I go way back, you know Mary Marvel?”

“W-wife?” Billy stuttered. “I didn’t know that Captain Marvel had a wife.”

“Oh they actually wanted to keep it on the down low.” Lila shushed. “Please don’t tell anyone I told you that.”

“Lila please share your book with M Batson and please refrain from talking any other thing while we’re in class.” Mme Mendeleieve ordered.

“Will do Mme Menedeleive.” Lila nodded as she scooted next to the new student and gave let him borrow her book.

Billy was caught off guard with the mention that his heroic alter-ego had a wife. He was even more perturbed when that supposed wife was his twin sister’s champion form.

What’s more was that this Lila person also claimed to “go a long way” with his twin sister.

That was when he noticed a very small purple orb that escaped from the girl’s mouth and made an attempt to make contact with him.

An attempt.

The purple orb disintegrated when his shirt gave off a small arc of electricity. It was probably his magic defending him from whatever that purple orb was.

“Gorgons according to the many Greek epics were immortals.” Mme Mendeleieve discussed. “One of them was just a regular mortal who incurred the wrath of Athena, the supposed goddess of wisdom.” She continued.

The bell suddenly rang, bringing the discussion to a halt.

“How was the hero Perseus able to defeat in his bout against Medusa?” Mme Mendeleive questioned. “Did he blind Medusa or did he let Medusa look at her own reflection?” She continued. “That will be your homework for Mme Bustier’s subject.” She added. That will be all for Mme Bustier’s subject.”

Mme Mendeleieve started gathering Mme Bustier’s things as she headed towards the door.

“You have a few minutes to proceed to the Science Classroom.” The Science teacher instructed.

Lunch Break came and Billy saw how her first seatmate immediately latched onto the class’s teen model – Adrien Agreste. He looked closely at his seatmate and the boy he latched onto and sure enough, a very small purple orb exited her mouth.

He looked at the orb and it made contact with boy’s silver ring and promptly disappeared.

“Billy right?” Alya asked him. “You can have lunch with our group until Marinette comes back.” She offered. “She usually eats her lunch at her home because it was near.” She explained. “Alya Cesaire.” She introduced herself to him. “

“Hey, why don’t we let Lila tour you around Billy?” A girl in pink shirt with blond hair suggested. “She’s super friendly.” She added. “I’m Rose Lavillant, everyone calls me Rose.”

“They were seatmates Rose.” The girl with black and green clothes pointed out. “I even noticed that they were talking to each other.” She added. “Alix Kubdel, call me Alix.”

“Sorry Rose, I need to get Adrien home and then I have to go to my mother’s office.” Lila apologized. “It’s about a trip to Gotham City and I really don’t want to go.”

“Don’t tell me, you’ve got into a fight with Damiboo?” The muscular boy in red jacket grinned. “Only you Lila, only you.” He chuckled.

“He’s right.” Rose nodded. “I wonder if Damien Wayne is as good as Prince Ali.” She added. “If he was, I would’ve earned their friendship and won’t fight with them.”

Billy watched as this Lila person talked and responded to her classmates’ words and questions. While there were no small and indistinct purple orbs coming out of the Rossi’s mouth but rather a tinge of pink smoke appeared on his new classmates’ head, as if she was already in control of their thoughts.

The only ones who didn’t have that tinge of pink smoke over their heads were Marinette and Adrien – the boy Lila was clinging onto.

Wait were they talking about the Damien Wayne?

As in Bruce Wayne’s son, Damien Wayne?

“These girls.” Alya shook her head. “Offer still stands Billy, you can eat with us until Marinette finishes her lunch.”

“Sure” Billy nodded.

“B-billy, I need to go home first, could you eat your lunch while you wait for me?” Marinette asked after approaching the new student.

“Got you covered girl.” Alya assured. “Billy’s eating with us.”

“Yeah, Alya already offered.” Billy confirmed. “We’ll go with the tour any time you’re back.”

“Thank you.” Marinette expressed her gratitude before running home.

“That girl needs to slow down on her commissions.” Alya chuckled. “She barely comes to school on time.” She shook her head.

Everyone has managed to introduce themselves to Billy, from Nino to Max and Kim to Ivan.

In Billy’s frank opinion, they were an energetic bunch, artistic and energetic. They were all in track for the art course once they finish their Collège.

Considering his status as an exchange student, it probably didn’t matter which classroom he’d end up with. Can’t say he didn’t like the arrangement considering his primary objective.

“So I’ve been meaning to ask this.” Alya voiced out. “Despite being an American, your French is impressive Billy.” She praised. “Were your parents French?”

“About that…” Billy trailed off. “I’m an orphan.” He admitted.

“Oh my gosh!” The entire class gasped. “I’m so sorry!” Alya apologized.

“No it’s okay.” Billy smiled weakly. “They died in a dig site in Khandaq as archaeologists.”

“That does beg to question how your French is impressive.” Max voiced out as he fixed his eyeglasses.

“Would you believe me if I said I was self-taught?” Billy asked.

“Not a chance dude.” Nino chuckled. “But if you’re uncomfortable with answering the question it’s fine.”

“Worth a shot.” Billy grinned. “Although I kinda want to keep my teacher a secret if that’s okay.”

“It’s fine.” Alya shrugged. “But I’m going to find out who your teacher is.”

“Alya.” Nino sighed.

“What?” Alya pouted. “If Billy can speak French fluently then his teacher can teach me so that I’ll also be fluent in English.”

A few more moments passed and a Marinette Dupain-Cheng arrived at school, out of breath while a certain Adrien Agreste went inside the school as calm as he can be.

Billy noticed that there were red and black something that went through the school’s wall, near the door to the men’s bathroom.

“B-billy, are you ready for the tour?” Marinette ran towards Billy.

“Breathe girl.” Alya instructed. “How many commissions girl?”

“A few.” Marinette admitted.

“Tell you what Marinette, let’s have the tour after classes.” Billy offered. “I kinda need to use the restroom now.” He admitted sheepishly.

“That works great for Marinette.” Alya responded immediately. “That way she can rest for the time being instead of rushing into things.”

“Alya! You know Jagged’s deadline is this Friday.” Marinette protested.

“And today’s Monday.” Alya fired back. “Girl you need to rest or you’ll burn out.”

“While we ignore these two dudettes, the male rest room is right in front of us.” Nino directed. “Be back before class dude.”

“I will” Billy nodded as he went inside the bathroom.

Billy rushed to the bathroom, went inside a stall and locked it from the inside.

“Shazam!”

As soon as Billy yelled the wizard’s name, lightning bolt came crashing from the ceiling, but did not damage the school in any way, and transformed him into his heroic persona, Captain Marvel.

As soon as he transformed two floating things phased through the stall’s walls and he was face-to-face with the kwamis of Creation and Destruction,

“Lord Plagg, Lady Tikki.” Captain Marvel greeted.

“Huh, you were right sugarcube.” The black kwami stated. “He really is a champion of order.”

“Why did the Lord of Order send you champion?” Tikki asked.

“Sugarcube’s right.” Plagg agreed. “We’ve been handling the Hawkmoth and Mayura issue pretty well if I do say so myself.” He bragged.

“Speak for yourself Plagg!” Tikki huffed. “Your chosen’s been acting out of character lately.”

“Really?” Plagg asked. “I hadn’t noticed.” Plagg admitted. “A-bwah.”

Green bubbles came out of Plagg’s mouth as if it was hindering him from ever saying something.

“It’s a spell to keep us from revealing our wielder’s names.” Tikki explained.

“He has been doing pretty fine, puns and all.” Plagg informed the two.

“You really haven’t noticed?” Tikki asked worriedly.

“What’s there to notice?” Plagg questioned. “My kitten’s doing his best supporting his lady.”

“Do you notice anything different whenever you’re pulled inside the Miraculous?” Captain Marvel asked his own question.

“Now that you mention it…” Plagg trailed off. “It’s like wrestling control of the Miraculous from someone.” He admitted. “But that’s easily quelled considering I am tied to the Miraculous and all.” He shrugged.

“Anyway, why are you questioning me?!” Plagg pointed at the new hero. “Is this an interrogation?”

“No Plagg.” Tikki shook her head. “Chat Noir’s been acting out of character lately.” She repeated her statement from earlier. “Instead of supporting Ladybug, all he does is flirt with her.” She informed the black cat Kwami.

“He said he’d give up on Ladybug.” Plagg narrowed his eyes.

“The magic inside Chat Noir is chaotic.” Captain Marvel informed both kwami. “You’re unconsciously fighting off that something even when you’re powering your chosen.” He added.

“Do you know what’s causing it?” Tikki looked at Captain Marvel expectantly.

“I have a hunch.” Marvel nodded. “But there’s a catch, to snap Chat Noir back to his senses, he needs to get shocked briefly.”

“What would that do?” Plagg narrowed his eyes.

“It’ll only disperse of what I believe was absorbed into your Miraculous.” Captain Marvel answered. “Or at the very least expel what you’re fighting, but it’ll be absorbed back into the ring after he depowers.

Before anyone else could even respond, yells and screams were heard from outside the restroom. Some were even hiding inside the stalls of the room.

“Another Akuma?” Someone from Marvel’s right groaned. “I have some deadlines today!”

“It’s not like you haven’t lived in Paris for the past year.” Another offered. “Hawkmoth sends an Akuma like every other day, if he’s not planning something big.”

“Doesn’t mean I have to like it!”

Plagg and Tikki nodded to each other before they flew towards their chosen.

Captain Marvel on the other hand stepped outside of the restroom before flying towards the direction the people are running away from.

Rika Kihira x Gutto sports

A while ago Rika appeared in a Japanese tv program. The program was pretty long and unfortunately a full video of it isn’t available at the moment. However the program, cut in 6 parts, was uploaded on drive and translated by @juronom on twitter.

Translation of the most interesting parts, done by Juro, please do not repost without credit. Part 1: Gutto Sport presenters commented that Rika is smaller in height than what her aura gives off. They ask Takeshi Honda and Akiko Suzuki about their shared skating experience with Rika.

T: We skated together at Kandai rink, so I meet her almost every day. I just met her yesterday too.

R: I lost count how many times I greet you already *laugh*

TH: She’s like *comes up to me* “Konnichiwa” (Hello), then skate away, then come back and “Konnichiwa” again.

The secret of her 3A:

- “The type that hasn’t been seen until now”-Takeshi Honda

- Comparison with legendary 3A by Japanese ladies:

o Midori Ito: height that can be comparable to men’s 3A

o Mao Asada: beautiful air position (vertical jumping posture)

o Rika Kihira: quick rotation, clear-cut (neat, sharp) 3A => allows her landing to be relaxed&free

On what she used as reference for her jumps:

“In the past, I used to refer to male skaters’ method of jumping quads, etc, carefully observe them. Then I always looked at Mao-chan’s amazing 3A as well. Recently, I rely on observation of) my own best condition, how much of the intensity of (practice) it can handle. Something like “When my muscles are at this condition, I should practice increase the intensity of my practice (practice many times).” On the other hand, if on that day, my jumps are off, I’d stop and let my body return (to its good condition) properly.”

Physical check: the secret why Rika can rotate so fast?

According to Prof Sakurai Tomono- researching on the mechanism of athletes’ muscles: her hip and thigh muscles can contract quickly.

Experiment for Rika: measuring the distance of one’s bunny hop from a kneeling position.

Average for boys: 41cm; girls: 20cm

Rika’s distance was 65cm

Part 2

Another secret: Rika is very “obsessed” with her skates (including blades)

She brought the pair she was using at the moment to the set.

Each of Her skating boots, (like other skaters’), is meticulously customized. When the skates first arrived, she had to adjust the blades’ position and angle, how much they lean forward or backward, towards one side or another etc, by herself carefully. She couldn’t say she could adjust them to their perfect condition, but she tried her best to tune them to as convenient a position as possible for her skating, millimeter by millimeter. Not only the position, but the gap between boots and blades are also controlled. Even if the gap is one 1mm wider or narrower, her skating can be affected greatly, to the extent that she could either do 30 3As in one day or none with the boots.

It takes more than 2 weeks to get used to a new pair.

Presenter asked why she couldn’t keep using the same pair.

It’s because the leather will soften, especially at the area around laces. Rika said when there’re some leather materials coming off around that area, she can’t jump at all. She changed boots around every 3 months, and since the boots take 3 weeks to be produced, she couldn’t change to a new pair immediately, and must notice when the pair in use shows some signs of softening.

The presenters need to stop Rika before she talks forever about her skating boots-her obsession.

Rika: “And then, recently, this part…” Everyone laughs: “She honestly can stop”

Questionnaire with Rika:

What does Rika have on her mind: 100% figure skating.

Takeshi Honda’s question: “Rika, is that really ok?”

It’s about her socks.

Skaters generally stick certain types of specially made socks produced by 1 brand when competing, but Rika is ok with any types of socks and doesn’t mind if her socks are ankle-length or longer. She just grabbed a random pair if she forgot her socks. (t/n: she’s actually using the kind of cute socks sold at tutu-ana (1000yen for 3 pairs) or gift shops lollll)

Akiko Suzuki’s question:

Akiko noticed that at ice shows, before eating, Rika always quickly takes photo before eating, but not in the manner suitable for posting food photos on SNS. Akiko thinks she did it to calculate nutrition value.

Rika: “After a day, I calculate my total calories intake. Combini food has calories value on them, but I don’t know the values for every separate item, so I took photos of everything, then calculate the amount later”.

Presenter: Is it hard to maintain (athletic) body form?

Rika: “Yes, I try as hard as I can. Even if I lose weight (or gain weight). If I lose too much weight, I can’t jump.”

Presenter: As a 17-year-old girl, you may want to eat things like sweets, drink tapioca tea etc…?

Rika: “Well technically I can, but when I eat things like cake or tapioca, which still adds to the amount of calories intake, meat, or such is still important, so I need to eat food that can be converted into energy correctly. If I eat cake or tapioca, my diet’s efficiency will be tampered with.”

Presenter: You can’t even after winning?

Rika: “But still, I still eat the food that can be converted to energy…”

Presenter: “Pizza and cola?”

Rika: *shake her head vigorously*

“If I sleep with an unfilled stomach, I feel like my muscles aren’t there. There are times when I was thinking about whether to get dinner or not, or just only eat the meat properly (not carbs), and then I felt like my muscles decrease, so I concluded that I must properly eat dinner anyways.”

“She is very disciplined. Her practice ability is very good, and she always has the drive to improve herself. Not in a reckless but proper way.” Scoring (from upper left going right)

On practicing with Satoko:

Rika: “I practice with her almost every day.”

Presenter: So do you talk?

Rika: “Yes, but for things irrelevant to skating. Satoko normally said things like “I forgot my CD >_<”. Satoko-chan is really interesting”

Figure skating truths by Rika

1. What does she think throughout a 4-min performance?

“There’re many things I think about. For instance: “The axel is coming up next”; “It’s bad if I overdo this part”; “I can’t miss this axel”; “If I made mistake on this jump, all the jumps I landed until now will become meaningless”.

Asked about whether she had entered a “zone”, where she wasn’t thinking anything but everything went well.

“In the past, that happened to me a lot too, but recently, sometimes I don’t think when performing, and there’s excitement too. However, when looking at and understand the real event happening, and thinking that “I don’t want to repeat the mistakes I’ve made until now” …then (that thought) appears in front of me, and in my head, then I’d think that “I don’t want to this (repeat the mistake)” and reconfirm the jumps. When I jump, it’s unconscious reflex, but I think about my surrounding, my own conditions or even my nervousness.”

Presenter: It’s the positive feelings of being able to see everything.

Rika: “Yes, it’s like that”.

Part 4

Choreography challenge with Ryouga Haruhi (t/n: Ryouga is known for playing male role in Takarazuka Revenue, a Japanese all-female musical theater troupe)

The program discussed the role of expression.

Presenter asked Rika what she does as supplement to her expression in figure skating.

Rika: “I do classical ballet around 2-3 hours/week, and I also go to dance school”

Presenter: Dance school? Like rock dance and hiphop?

Rika: “Yes, things like hiphop.”

Rika: “This is the dance lesson I had in the US, but normally, I have dance lessons that use more hip-hop-like music and more strong movements.”

Everyone complimented on her (and Satoko’s) beautiful movement.

Rika wanted to ask Ryoga about the way she and Takarazuka actresses use their expression, how they pose, and the angle of their faces.

Ryoga explained that expressions showed of male and female roles are opposite: soft and flexible vs cool, then she proceeded to give “posing” lesson. She showed the movement patterns of: female role, lower-class male role and upper-class male role.

Rika was asked to do the movement of “lower-class man” then “upper-class man” (the one with hand on her face) and she managed very well, receiving compliments from the presenters. Part 5

About the Nobeyama Kougen training camp, known as the place where “Golden-eggs” of Japan figure skating are assembled. Notable alumni: Mao Asada, Yuzuru Hanyu, Takeshi Honda, Shizuka Arakawa, Rika Kihira.

The training camp is 4 days long, with various training sessions from 8am-9.30pm. The camp’s purpose is to evaluate and search for skaters with potential and to check their living attitude as well, like how they conform to curfews, etc. Rika went to the camp 3 years ago, and she said it was very tough.

Rika: “(Being there), you have to worry about whether you will be seeded or if you will be assigned to any competition, and then there’ll be new comers…so in every aspect, you have no way but show you are the best one. Even off-ice physical checking is so tough, squatting/ running around etc, that on the next day, I can’t even move my legs or climb the stairs, but still have to perform programs.”

Presenter: Do you want to go back?

Rika: “Maybe”

Akiko said being there makes you realize she was hand-picked from among all skating children in Japan. That really changes her working attitude and elevates her determination.

Video about legendary 3A by Midori Ito, done 1 minute before the end of her program at 1992 Olympics. The 3A has become the trail-blazer for future generations.

Rika: “I don’t think I can do 3A in the latter half at all. It’s already so tough to have it as the 2nd or 3rd jump but I don’t think I’ve ever tried jumping it 1 minute before the end of the program.”

Part 6

Rika’s impression of Midori Ito: “I experienced challenging 3A but failing in competitions. The first time I met her, she comforted me: “Ahh 3A is very difficult. Though it’s difficult, I really support you”, such kind actions.”

Presenter: But you haven’t got any chance to talk to her leisurely

Rika: “No, I haven’t”

Presenter: Let’s do it now ^^

Rika: “Heeehhh”

Midori Ito appeared: “You’ve worked hard” (to Rika)

“I’m so happy. You even remember the 1st time we met. That makes me so happy.”

Rika: “I do remember”

Midori: “Really?”

“It’s amazing. You can jump it (3A) stably now” to Rika.

Midori said she contemplated whether to do 3Lz or 3A when she was spinning in that program, then decided to do 3A. She asked Rika: “If you made mistake on the 1st 3A, do you think about the 2nd time?”

Rika: ”Well, but I’ve not thought about it in the latter half, really, (3A) in the latter half it’s sugoii…”

Midori’s secret for her super high 3A is to “skate with all her power at top speed”. Because she entered 3A at a very high speed, she can get to that height. She described that method of jumping 3A is like: “Doing long jump (a athletic sport) but rotating at the same time” (t/n: Rika’s face loll)

Rika said she didn’t jump 3A at top speed because she can’t control her axis.

Midori: “However, in my generation, we just focus on doing our jumps at high speed, but in Kihira-san’s generation, the programs have to be beautiful as whole, and in such programs, there is 3A. It’s a generation that (3A) isn’t effective if the programs aren’t beautiful itself. It’s amazing that there are beautiful programs but at the same time allow to do 3A efficiently.” *looks at Rika* Rika is very happy to receive advice from Midori. Rika: “With this experience, I will try harder and harder every day in order to create a sense of stability. Then, I must perform quads cleanly too.”

Midori’s advice to Rika: “She’s very serious. She is already going forward while staying fixated to her goal. So, *looks at Rika* try to keep yourself in good health. You can’t suddenly jump triples or quads. You can’t say you’ll be free of injury at all, but you have to make compromises with injury and your body conditions. Taylor Swift Says She Will Rerecord Her Old Music. Here’s How.

The singer and songwriter could gain control by creating new master recordings of material that has been sold. It’s a drastic but not unheard-of move.

When Taylor Swift took to Tumblr earlier this summer to decry the sale of the Nashville-based Big Machine Label Group, the owner of her first six multiplatinum albums, to the powerful music manager Scooter Braun, she kick-started an industrywide conversation about master recordings and artists’ rights.

The $300 million deal “stripped me of my life’s work,” she wrote, and left her back catalog “in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

She said Braun, who has worked with Swift’s longtime foil Kanye West, had subjected her to years of “incessant, manipulative bullying.” With the master recordings of her albums now under the purview of Braun’s Ithaca Holdings, the company could dictate how her songs are sold and used moving forward.

(At the time, Scott Borchetta, the Big Machine founder, pushed back against Swift’s statement, saying he had given her the opportunity to earn back her masters through a new deal with his label. In November, Swift decamped for Universal Music Group’s Republic Records in a multiple album agreement that allowed her to own her future masters.)

Now, ahead of the release of her new album, “Lover,” on Friday, Swift, ever the tactician, has reignited the industry battle with an out-of-left-field proposition: She could rerecord her old music and release new versions that she would own.

Though the idea had previously been floated on Swift’s behalf by no less than Kelly Clarkson, Swift publicly raised the possibility herself for the first time in a pretaped interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” set to air this weekend. In an excerpt released on Wednesday, the interviewer Tracy Smith asked if Swift had considered that option. “Oh yeah,” Swift said, according to the CBS transcript.

Smith followed-up, “That’s a plan?,” to which Swift replied, “Yeah, absolutely.”

A representative for Swift declined to detail her intentions or answer questions about past contract stipulations. Universal Music declined to comment; Braun and Borchetta did not respond to questions. But this is how things might shake out should Swift choose to pursue such a drastic — if not unheard-of — move.

How could this be possible?

Music rights are infamously complicated, but owning the master recordings — the original copies of an artist’s work — and the associated copyright is not everything. While the owner of a master typically has the ability to sell songs and albums, as well as license the recordings to movies, television and video games, there are separate rights for the composition itself, which is usually split among the songwriters. When a song is covered, for instance, the songwriters are compensated; when it is sampled from the original recording, both the songwriters and the owner of the master benefit.

In most standard recording contracts, labels retain ownership over masters in return for the investment they make in unproven artists in the form of recording, promotion and other expenditures.

But because Swift is credited as a lead writer across her entire catalog — excluding some songs on her 2007 Christmas EP — she could essentially give herself permission to record “cover versions” of her own compositions without having to touch the masters owned by Big Machine and Braun.

What could stop her?

On the one hand, not many practical concerns, given that this is Taylor Swift, one of the most connected, wealthy and powerful people in the modern music industry. “She certainly has the money to be able to do this, which is always going to be an issue in this situation,” said Mark Tavern, a former major-label record executive and a professor of music business at LaGuardia Community College. “It’s one thing to make acoustic versions, it’s another to do a full pop production and make them competitive” with the originals, he added.

If Swift were to attempt a note-for-note recreation that could replace the old versions in loyal fans’ collections, she would probably need the support of her past collaborators, from co-writers on her early songs, like Liz Rose, to the pop producers Max Martin, Shellback and Jack Antonoff. “That would be smoother and prevent backlash in public,” Tavern said, adding: “Each of those co-writers stands to make a ton of money from any of those rereleases.

”Still, Swift’s past contracts with Big Machine, where she first signed as a teenager in 2005, could include language that would complicate things. Restrictions on rerecording songs have been common since the Everly Brothers put out fresh versions of past hits on a new label in the early ’60s, according to Tavern. Such terms typically bar artists from releasing rerecorded work for three to five years, or more, from its release. In Swift’s case, “We haven’t seen the contracts, but it’s pretty standard language in everyone’s contract,” Tavern said.

Swift’s first album on Big Machine, her self-titled debut, came out in 2006, while her most recent, “Reputation,” was released in 2017. In theory, should her contracts have time restrictions in place, she could begin releasing new versions on rolling basis, starting at the beginning.

In an appearance Thursday on “Good Morning America,” Swift alluded to these contract restrictions more specifically: “My contract says that starting November 2020, so next year, I can record albums one through five all over again,” she said. “It’s next year, it’s right around the corner — I’m going to be busy, I’m excited.”

“I think that artists deserve to own their work,” she added. “I just feel very passionately about that.”

What would this look like in practice?

Taking into consideration any restrictions, Swift could opt to rerecord entire albums, or start with her most-played singles. Those updated versions might then be released in physical forms, as new merchandise, or be uploaded to streaming services alongside the originals, leaving listeners the choice of whether to listen to “Love Story” or, say, “Love Story (2020 Version)” on Spotify or Apple Music. (Via her publishing contracts as a songwriter, Swift could also urge anyone looking to license her songs in the future to take her new renditions instead of the Big Machine versions.)

In an interesting twist, Swift’s current label and distributor, Universal, is also the distributor of Big Machine, which could leave the corporation competing against itself.

At the same time, any attention given to the rereleases could rub off on the old versions, helping the bottom line of Braun, Borchetta and Big Machine. “I think there will be some benefit to the original streaming masters as people go and compare,” Tavern said. “I don’t think that people are going to stop streaming those masters.”

For Swift, however, the maneuver could be more of a statement than a financial play. “Knowing how she likes to kind of twist the knife a little bit, this could be a great opportunity for her to do that,” Tavern said. “It’s the ultimate way that she could get back at Big Machine and thumb her nose at Scooter.”

Has anyone ever pulled this off before?

In addition to the Everly Brothers, various acts have gone down this path, or at least threatened to. Most famously, Prince vowed to rerecord his entire catalog while feuding with his label, Warner Bros., in the 1990s, but released only select tracks before reaching an agreement to gain ownership of his masters.

More recently, as the industry went digital, Def Leppard blocked its label, Universal, from releasing its catalog online and instead sold what the band playfully called “forgeries” of its biggest hits, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Rock of Ages.” (“I had to sing myself into a certain throat shape to be able to sing that way again,” said the Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott at the time.) The parties eventually came to an agreement over the original music.

The pop singer Jojo went even further last year, releasing newly recorded versions of her first two albums, which were not available on streaming services, after her rerecording clauses ran out.

How serious is Swift about this?

She has yet to reveal more about her plans, but she has signaled that she means it. On Tumblr, where her most dedicated fans, known as Swifties, congregate, she has been known to boost fan theories and insights she agrees with. After the CBS interview excerpt surfaced on Wednesday, Swift went on a “liking” spree, throwing her support behind breathless posts like “HAHAHAHAHA HE BOUGHT HER MASTERS FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BEHIND HER BACK AND NOW SHES MAKING THEM WORTHLESS” and “I’m so freaking proud of Taylor controlling her life, accomplishments, work, her art, her story, and her life,” as another fan wrote. “THATS WHAT MY BABY DESERVES.”

The Biggest Player in Social Media: Is she true to her brand?

The biggest players in social media are required to complete a course in personal branding. Not really, but they should and many have agents and advisers that script them on what to post, how to post and some even do it for them. Thus, showing a different version of their personal brand. In its most basic definition, your personal brand is how you promote yourself. it is the marketing of your ideals, beliefs and personality as a brand.

In preparation for this blog post, I researched the highest paid social media influencers, wanting to see if being the “biggest” affects how they promote themselves and if they are “real” and true to their brand. Selena Gomez is the most followed celebrity on social media, with a following of 167 million on Instagram and climbing. According to the article from “IZEA.com”, she is paid roughly $550,000 per post. Half a million dollars, just to upload a photo?!? Does this compensation influence how and when she posts? Let’s take a look.

Here are her 12 most recent Instagram posts ranging from January 9th- now. At first glance, these photos may seem self centered as they all are only shots of herself, yet with a deeper analysis into the additional photos posted and the comments, her postings highlight her work and her personality in an original way.

For example, her most recent post highlights her time on the Ellen show, as she states, “Yesterday was so much fun!! @jenniferaniston has been such a huge figure in my life. I love her humor, her grace and her heart! Check out the interview where I’m gushing over her the whole time!” This post displays Selena’s grateful personality and comes off as truly genuine. The pictures she uses in her post reiterate that feeling, thus creating a warm and family feeling.

Overall, Selena Gomez does a good job of highlighting her personal brand throughout her social media, while displaying key life moments and projects.

Episode 81...IRONICALLY one of the most Juliantina-less eps in recent memory, there were some interesting revelations (One of which I MISSED, please help lol) let's get to the ones I ACTUALLY got to watch:

Going by Maca's Mysterious Surprise, Barbs' latest "Tacos de Tripa" twitter comments, them obviously filming something in character on Valentine's day (I thought it was probably a Valentines Day Promo or something like that but NOPE, its was definitely for something else) and the official Amar a Muerte Twitter account latching on to the Juliantina Around the World campaign (originally organized by fans) I'm 90% sure there's some sort of Spin Off/ Season 2 coming.

(IF NOT this is totally gonna become the HALF-LIFE-3 of wlw shows LOL).

Pages from the official Kameo Manga I’m not sure if I can upload the full manga but I want to show these pages that show Theena and Kalus immediately after Solon’s death. The other ones show the interaction between Kameo and Kalus but I want people reading this to pay close attention to what they all say. Notice how after hearing about Solon’s death, she doesn’t comfort her own daughter. She clings to Kameo, adopts her and straight up ignores Kalus who is dragged away to her lessons while Theena spends time to play with baby Kameo (though I am not blaming her or saying it’s Kameo’s fault at all for Theena’s actions here) We see when they are older that Theena has continued to push her own daughter Kalus further away since she was 3 years old. Kalus is now barely 5 years old, received no affection from her own mother in almost 2 years and has already built up a wall around herself. Theena stops to play with Kameo but not with Kalus, having the same sad expression from seeing her own daughter who reminds her of her husband but still chooses to neglect her in favor of Kameo. I also want to show the only time ever in the entire series that Kalus has received affection from Theena and it’s from Solon right before he dies.(tumblr won’t let me add another screenshot but I’ll try to add it to the comment section) Unfortunately only one volume of this manga was released but it gave us a lot of insight and that, along with the Kameo podcast and Journals, it paints a pretty solid picture: Kalus isn’t a spiteful, ‘evil’ petty sister. She’s an emotionally neglected and even physically abused, stressed out kid who only had 1 thing left in her life, that her Father had left her, that she worked hard for, for 15 years, only for Theena to play favourites and give it to Kameo after the Elemental Stand incident in Theena’s room from what Kameo did. Kameo’s journal: 72.9.1.11 (1) “That’s when Mother came in. She yelled at us both, but mostly she yelled at Kalus. What are you doing? She grabbed Kalus’s arm really hard and looked madder than I’ve ever seen her. For a second, I thought she was going to hit Kalus, but she didn’t. She just yelled a lot about being irresponsible and how she feels she can’t trust Kalus.” I want reader to remember that Theena plays favourites, she’s played favourites for 15 years. Kameo knows she’s Theena’s favourite. Now, do you think she would ever want to do anything to upset her favourite? Remember this is from Kameo’s journal. If Kameo wasn’t there, she would have hit Kalus. She absolutely would have struck Kalus right then and there. Imagine Kalus in that spot, hearing her own Mother (who has also actively avoided trying to train or talk to Kalus about the ceremony) saying to Kalus that she doesn’t trust her. Kalus puts on a brave front and tries to act like a perfect Queen, to be exactly like what her father Solon would have expected of her, that’s why she puts on this brave front even in her journal in some parts. This is why Kalus does not write or go into more detail about this abuse, she focuses on her Father and her role as Queen for the kingdom. I am fairly certain from Theena playing favourites, she subconsciously sabotaged Kalus solely for Kameo to take over. Mystic had to do almost nothing to influence Theena. She only had to show her a fake vision and Theena, having no trust in her daughter, who for 15 years has worked hard to be Queen and make her father proud, easily handed everything to an inexperienced Kameo. As for Kameo, she’s not innocent either. Definitely nowhere near as bad as Theena but she’s not off scott-free either. I want to point out that Kameo knew she shouldn’t have touched it, and I want to point out that Kameo knew she was Theena’s favourite. Even after she tells Lenya before the ceremony (Yes Lenya knew the truth of what happened and was talking to Theena after it happened and didn’t tell her) but this is why I asked people to read and remember what was written in those journals, mainly Kameo’s journal: 762.9.1.11 (2) “I explained everything to Lenya, and she said that I should try to explain it to Mother. Tomorrow. After the ceremony, maybe.” 762.X.1.11 (1) “I haven’t seen her since yesterday when we had the fight in the room of the Element Of Power. I don’t think she’s come out of her room. I thought I heard her in there crying last night, but I know for a fact that nothing I could have said would have made her feel better. I’ll apologise to her too, after the ceremony. She’s probably nervous and doesn’t want to be bothered today. We’ll see. If I get a moment alone with her, I’ll maybe say sorry then. Maybe it will make all of this easier on her if she’s not mad at me anymore.” Kameo knows Kalus was not at fault, that she was under severe stress and that she should not have even touched the Element Of Power. Despite all that, Kameo would rather Kalus not be mad at her and might apologise for what she did. I want the fandom to know and understand this. Kalus could have handled the situation better but she is by no means doing this out of spite. This poor kid’s been through hell and back, abused by her family and had literally everything taken from her. Let’s not forget that after she sacrifices herself to make things right, when Kameo and Theena are falling afterwards, once Theena checks Kameo is fine, she looks at the carnage with a smile. She doesn’t ask what happened to Kalus (she couldn’t have seen or heard from where she was and Kalus saying sorry was a telepathic message between those two according to the Prima guide as Kalus reveals the Mystic had manipulated both of them) but even after that, Kameo does not tell Theena what the Mystic did and either didn’t tell her what Kalus did to literally save all of them or Theena doesn’t care at all. Kalus is hands down the most tragic character and Kameo is not pure of heart. Please share this so the fandom knows the true story. This game BADLY needs a remake with ALL of the lore included. Also adding this real quick, in the interview, the reason why Kalus is so upset (check the date of the interview and compare it to Kalus’ entry) not only is she severely stressed but they interviewed Kameo first. She was overlooked as the next Queen for the entire kingdom solely for the more popular princess right before the ceremony. Now you can imagine why she’s so angry at Kameo here. Beforehand, she was actively working to find Kameo a job that she would like when she became Queen. Here, she is beyond hurt. 15 years of work and constantly being in Kameo’s shadow, yet she’s still being denied any positive attention or spotlight.

Seiyuu Rant: Gender Inequality

The following is a repost of a post I made in 2018. It was flagged and removed for “explicit content”.

The reason you don’t hear [female seiyuu] in anime is simply because she’s an older voice actor. Even someone as popular as Hanazawa Kana hasn’t been getting many roles lately. Those roles have all been going to cheaper and younger voice actors. It’s sad, but don’t expect Sakura Ayane to be as prominent after about five more years. That’s how the voice acting industry is.

Okay, so I was on Reddit when I asked, “What happened to Aya Hirano?” She used to be in her prime when she got roles in Lucky Star, Haruhi Suzumiya, Fairy Tail, and a whole bunch of other things. Her most recent role that stuck with me was Parasyte which was back in 2015. Since then, I have heard so little from her in seasonal anime.

That’s when someone brought up the elephant in the room… then shot it and stabbed it.

We all know the world is a sexist waste ball, but I have always turned a blind eye to the fact that female seiyuu get phased out really easily. I know Tumblr mostly focuses on male seiyuu since the demographic for this platform is usually younger women or something like that, but I think female seiyuu losing popularity and roles because they’re “getting older” is kind of sad.

In this rant, I rant about the inequalities and hardship facing female (and male) seiyuu. I added some stuff compared to last time.

Age:

Hanazawa was born in February 1989. She just turned 30. The idea that she’s not getting as many roles is kind of scary, isn’t it? Aya Hirano is 31. For Hanazawa and for the sake of anime, I hope that just isn’t true.

I know I always joke about people getting old and how they always go, “My back hurts!” or “I have to go to bed [at 8pm].” or “Back in my day…” (why do I even make fun of that? I do all of the above??) But these voice actresses aren’t even that old. I wouldn’t want anyone’s careers to slow down all because they reached the age of 30. A career slowing down should be by choice.

Average Age:

But if you want cold hard numbers, I’m going to do some math. I’m aware that I’m bad at math, so I’m going to explain this process. I made two posts about the TOP TWENTY seiyuu for both male and female.

What is the average age? I added up the age of all twenty seiyuu then divided by twenty. Unfortunately, all numbers hold the same amount of weight meaning that the number one spot and the number twenty spot both get calculated the same way.

Average Male Age: 37

From the No. 1 to the No. 20 spot: 43 + 33 + 38 + 38 + 35 + 40 + 32 + 44 + 40 + 27 + 51 + 32 + 36 + 27 + 38 + 44 + 34 + 35 + 46 + 31

Average Female Age: 29

From the No. 1 to the No. 20 spot: 23 + 33 + 29 + 26 + 24 + 27 + 31 + 39 + 24 + 23 + 38 + 29 + 28 + 26 + 25 + 38 + 24 + 34 + 33 + 30

I understand that male seiyuu tend to debut later, but that’s still a very large gap. Female seiyuu don’t even have anyone over 40.

Health:

Not to mention, this seems to be a trend across the board, doesn’t anyone notice that both mangaka, seiyuu, and artists in general always get sick because they overwork themselves? Hosoya took a break because of his throat, Taneda took a break because of illness, Umehara took a break because of illness, Akesaka retired from singing because of her throat and health, Yurika Endou retired because her health was declining, Tooru Ookawa took a break due to illness, Keiji Fujiwara took a leave due to sickness then returned later on, and the list goes on.

Early Retirement and Demand:

If female seiyuu have to work that hard for a career that won’t last that long, no wonder some retire once they get married or pregnant. It’s not a viable option to stick around if you’re going to be pushed out like that in a few years time. I know there are exceptions and this and that, but this is just reality. Even once you finally make it, you’re only going to be there for a little while. And access to playing good female characters is always going to be limited, but that’s a rant for another time. I’m just saying that maybe if we had more good female characters, maybe we would have more demand for more voice actresses.

Image and Fans:

While male seiyuu have this too, I think it’s important to acknowledge that female seiyuu are expected to obtain “idol-like” images these days. They achieve this by restricting their personal lives by not dating and watching how they dress and present themselves and providing an innocent image for their fans to admire. While there are several examples of not being allowed to date, the most recent example of this is when Ayana Taketatsu got married to Yuki Kaji. [source]

Some of them do photo books (sometimes of a more provocative genre) that require them to pose and distribute images of themselves which can be uncomfortable, and while it’s arguably “consensual”, there is probably pressuring to do these types of things. Sometimes, they also post their “BWH” measurements. This means that they have to post their bust, weight, and hip sizes. It’s a very restricting lifestyle, and while fans of any seiyuu can be over-the-top, female seiyuu fans have been known to be exceptionally disrespectful.

Eriko Nakamura was tracked when she went on a trip because someone went onto Google Maps and used her pictures to find out where she went and what route she took. But that’s just a specific example of how female seiyuu’s pictures are taken by fans and dissected (and distributed) to show what they do with their lives.

Nana Mizuki got death threats because she didn’t reply to a fan on a few occasions. Yurika Ochiai also received death threats and noted on her blog that she had to take a break from the public due to stress, but who wouldn’t be stressed about strangers threatening to kill them? Aya Ueto has received death threats as well. Arrests were made in these cases.

Haruna Ikezawa was stalked and defamed by a stalker who was later arrested. He wrote defamatory comments on the voice actress's homepage and repeatedly send messages asking for a personal meeting, telling the voice actress to "come by herself". It was not confirmed whether this was the same person, but someone also followed her through the streets at night resulting in a restraining order. [source]

Mai Kadowaki’s fan was arrested after he sent a letter saying that he would kill her parents. [source]

Aki Toyosaki got into heat because she was dating someone... despite being in her 30s. “Fans began posting photos her CD K-on singles broken into pieces and photos of her K-on character's face crossed out in red ink. One fan even uploaded a photo of Toyosaki surrounded by bullets and a hand menacingly gripping a knife (above). Another fan wrote on 2ch. about killing her. These might be "jokes", but they are hardly funny. [Source]

Sumire Uesaka was sent and read a letter where she was creeped out by a fan letter, but it was played off as a joke.

And during the Kokoro Connect scandal (which is included in some links below), Eri Kitamura was harassed by fans that were sending her dick pics and hate messages via twitter to the point where she had to stop using Twitter (she has resumed Twitter activity a while after).

I talk about this more below in the “scandals” section, but female seiyuu get heat for things that are arguably normal. Again, voice actors like Hikaru Midorikawa have gotten into scandals like this too (Midorikawa was accused of cheating because of a matching piece of jewelry or something).

Scandals:

When Aya Hirano’s scandal occurred, people were threatening her and cutting up her merchandise and pictures.

Daisuke Namikawa got into a scandal involving adultery where he allegedly cheated in 2004 when he got married in 2001. He cheated with a teenage girl who worked at his former agency. According to an interview, this relationship had gone on until “recently” (when it came to the surface in July 2017). [Source: Anime News Network]

In my opinion, cheating is one of the lowest things you can do to your partner, and if you do such a thing, you should have a good excuse. But with a teenage girl? Come on. At the start of the relationship, he was 28. He should’ve known better, yet, we never hold these acts against him. He’s still getting a lot of roles in anime, and as much as I don’t have anything against him as an actor and as a master of his craft, I can’t help but think of this whenever his image comes up.

In the Kokoro Connect Scandal, we see a public humiliation of a male voice actor. Two of the main players in the scandal are Takuma Terashima and Hisako Kanemoto. While I don’t know the complete reasons for this, Takuma Terashima can somehow still get roles and even sang the opening for that Slime anime? We don’t see Kanemoto often though.

The Arts Vision scandal was terrible. She was assaulted at only 16. This incident did occur in 2006, and he was released a few months later after his arrest. He stepped down as chairman in 2007. I feel like he wasn’t really held accountable. He apparently was released for medical reasons or something like that. Basically, bullshit. What’s even worse is the fact that he was the founder of the company, and this agency represents a lot of good voice actors Saki Fujita, Jun Fukushima, Souchirou Hoshi, Tomoaki Maeno, Kousuke Toriumi, Yuuichirou Umehara, and Daiki Yamashita just to name a few. It is also the parent company of I’m Enterprise which is another huge agency which houses Saori Hayami, Youko Hikasa, Kaede Hondo, Rie Kugimiya, Maria Naganawa, Mai Nakahara, Saori Oonishi, Ari Ozawa, Chiwa Saito, Ayane Sakura, Aya Suzaki, the Uchida siblings, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, Hiro Shimono, and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. He had a lot of power, and I imagine this wasn’t his first time taking advantage.

Male Seiyuu Benefits:

So, male seiyuu get more leniency in expressing themselves, more time in the industry, more interesting parts, more work, and possibly more money. And when I say more leniency, I mean A LOT more leniency. The cast of Haganai was saying how it’s great how they can say “うんこ (poop)” in front of a large audience. Meanwhile, we have male seiyuu who can discuss panties without anybody judging. If a female seiyuu were to do that, she’d probably get scolded by her manager. They are to stick to a certain image, and they can’t do much outside of it. A huge part of Aya Hirano’s decline was caused by her sleeping with other band members (except for the bassist; RIP I’m a bass player).

While seiyuu in general cosplay, it’s far more difficult for female seiyuu to cosplay because of costumes in anime are... you know. There is a stream where Akari Kito is pressured into wearing the costume that her character wore, and yes, it did happen. If it’s any consolation, the seiyuu community felt a bit conflicted about it.

Harassment Within the Industry:

Like pretty much all industries, female seiyuu experience sexual harassment as well. Few have been open about it, but Atsuko Enomoto commented on the progression of the #metoo movement. She talks about wanting to give up and quit the industry. There have also been comments about producers and directors hitting on and harassing young female seiyuu, and they can’t do anything about it because they’re starting out. And this is only the stuff that makes it onto the surface.

Hiroko Konishi also shares her experience that happened decades ago where female seiyuu suffered from abuse, sexual harassment, and other hardship because they were expected to “sell themselves”.

There have even been comments on how there’s a “casting couch” in the industry.

Yurina Hase also speaks about the “casting couch” and how disgusting the industry is.

Hase revealed she experienced a "casting couch" situation once for an anime that was produced at Sunrise. She said that she was asked to perform sexual favors, and when she refused, she was notified the next day that she did not get the role. She said that this was her only experience with a casting couch as an anime voice actress.

Before the livestream, Hase wrote on Twitter that she planned to "reveal how I really feel," and that she has "the resolve to end everything."

In the stream, she also gave advice to "watch out for the male voice actors." She said that the newcomer male actors tend to let the attention go to their heads, and immediately try to lay their hands on the female actors.

She received multiple death threats in 2009, causing her stress. She later resigned from her role in the The IDOLM@STER series as Yukiho, and was replaced by Azumi Asakura. In 2014, she took a break from new voice acting roles.

Voice acting is a tough industry, but being a female voice actress is even tougher. I just wanted to put this rant out there because I casually say things about it from time to time, but with that Reddit comment, I think I finally wanted to give it its own post.

A Myanmar OnlyFans model has been barred from travelling after authorities failed to return her travel documents. Former doctor and OnlyFans model, Nang Mwe San, has blasted the Myanmar passport office as 'unfair,' after they didn't return her document, effectively stopping her from travelling. Nang Mwe San, who lives in Myanmar, qualified as a doctor at the age of 22 after her parents drove her towards that career path. But the OnlyFans alumni actually wanted to become a model and began participating in professional photo shoots after a few years of caring for patients in an hospital. LICENSE REVOKED The now-33-year-old Instagram model and influencer had her license revoked after refusing orders to stop posting racy photos. And she has recently found she is 'barred' from travelling. Reports show that the Myanmar model has been unable to travel to Bangkok because Yangpon's Passport Office has refused to return her passport. The model has attempted to renew her passport, and an anonymous source has claimed Mwe San had to cancel a trip to Bangkok where her father is undergoing unexpected medical treatment. 'UNFAIR' Officials have held onto her passport since 31st March, in what Mwe San has reportedly said is 'unfair' and violates her right to travel. The former doctor was, according to a source familiar with the situation, complaining of the decision the Yangpon Passport Office had made. Mwe San criticised her former employers in an interview with the New York Times, where she said: 'Here there is so much sexism. 'They don't want women to have higher positions. 'And they judge women on what we wear. 'They don't want us to wear trousers - they told me I have a behaviour disorder.' ONLYFANS Mwe San recently posted a photo of herself to Instagram with the caption: 'My life my rules.' She also cited Myanmar as her 'happy place' in a photoshoot uploaded to the social media app that showed Mwe San posing on a beach in a bikini with a horse. Mwe San also added that she makes more money as a model than she did as a doctor, raking in £5,600 to £8,000 a month with her new job, according to Coconuts. Prevalent Misogynistic Crimes

I am a very ordinary woman from South Korea and these are what I went through in my whole life:

When I was 10, a boy whom I met at church lifted up my skirt to see the underwear. When I was 16, at my grandma’s funeral, I suddenly felt someone kissing me while I was sleeping in a room alone after crying for a few hours. I was too frightened to open my eyes. In my 17, one of my high school teachers stared at my body while I asked questions of him. He was notorious for telling sexual jokes to students*.

* This year, since #MeToo has been widely spread in Korea, current students in my high school brought up their experiences with the same teacher. The school dismissed the voices and he still works in the school.

I still remember my thought after I just turned into 18. “Wait, I became an adult and does it mean I won’t be protected from any sexual harassment?” because I’ve seen how people treat a victim of rape at the comments on the online news. People said she was polluted or she would have misbehaved, thus, deserved it unless the victim was a child. —And yes, I was right.

The next year, I was in the subway with around 7 people. One drunk man was swearing loudly in that space. Suddenly, he gazed at me and talked unpleasant words to me. People were just watching us, nobody stopped him, and I had to hurry off at the next station. After a few months, I ran away from another man, who was my friend and tried raping me. I submitted a record of his confession but the prosecutor said it’s difficult to put him in jail because it was his first sexual crime and ended up in an attempt anyway. I even could not spread it to our mutual friends because my lawyer advised me that I’d be sued for defamation* then.

* South Korea has a law to prevent defamation with spreading truth or untruth about someone, even if the truth is a criminal record. It actually has resulted in some victims of rape were sued for defamation by the perpetrators after #MeToo boom.

Despite all the experiences above, I believe I’m still the lucky one in that I’ve not been through the other crimes yet; dating abuse, domestic violence, a revenge pornography, and a murder aiming for a random woman.

Specifically, I’d like to bring a revenge pornography on. Ho-Jin Kim who runs a company that provides a service of deleting online-videos said that he meets 600 women on average per year. They are victims of digital sexual harassment, mostly their boyfriends spread sex tapes to the victims’ acquaintances or on the Internet after they broke up. Some of the videos were even sneakily filmed with hidden cameras that their boyfriends installed in advance. Kim also said, “after I delete all the videos and call the client again, her family member answers the phone and says she killed herself. It’s usual.” He ended his interview with a concern that there must be much more victims but they don’t know that pictures/videos of their bodies are being shared on pornography websites yet. As he said, digital sexual harassment including the revenge pornography approached 8,869 cases in 2015, according to the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.

Those are actual stories, common experiences of women in my country, and an explanation of why I’ve chosen an expat’s life.

Plus. One of the best things to live outside of Korea is that I don’t have to worry about hidden cameras in public restrooms anymore. I don’t need to carry stickers and attach them on suspicious screws and holes on the wall. Unbelievable.

Last year, the police arrested 983 men from July to August for shooting and filming women’s bodies on the quiet and uploading them on the Internet. For readers who can’t believe this crime is prevalent: an English audio-clip news pointing out that the above crime became a social problem in South Korea.

The next entry is about how the Korean society requires beauty to women.

We talked to Deborah Harkness and the cast and creators of the upcoming A Discovery of Witches TV adaptation! We’ve got new details about the series, including what fans can expect and where we’ll be able to watch in the USA.

Anyone who has talked to me over the last month knows that A Discovery of Witches was at the tip-top of my San Diego Comic-Con mustsee/mustdo list! As soon as I found out that the series would have a panel at SDCC, I knew I had to find my way to that panel and pressroom. Mostly, I was anticipating news about a U.S. home for the series… information that we did get! A Discovery of Witches will stream on Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ direct-to-consumer SVOD service curated with high quality dramas, comedies and crime thrillers, and Shudder, the leading premium streaming service for thriller, suspense and horror.

A Discovery of Witches will have eight episodes in the first season, and when it makes its debut in the U.S. and Canada (on a date to be confirmed later), all episodes available simultaneously on both Sundance Now and Shudder.

While our UK friends will get to enjoy the series starting Friday, September 14 on Sky One, for now, us U.S. fans will be rewatching the fabulous teaser trailer.

To help tide us over, I also suggest checking out the interviews we did with Deborah Harkness and the A Discovery of Witches cast at SDCC! Teresa Palmer (Diana Bishop), Alex Kingston (Sarah Bishop), Valarie Pettiford (Emily Mather), Owen Teale (Peter Knox), and Lachlan MacKinnon (EP) were on-hand to tell us more about adapting this series to TV and what fans can expect.

According to Deb Harkness, she was only interested in having A Discovery of Witches adapted as long as it was possible to maintain the integrity of the story. It was a difficult process to find the right collaborators for the project. Similarly, the actual work of adaptation was fun, but ambitious, especially in terms of blowing up the world and expanding beyond Diana Bishop’s POV and experiences.

Deb also shares her thoughts on casting the series–how the casting of Teresa Palmer as Diana was perfect, in terms of her physical appearance and spirit. In fact, Deb thinks that in the series casting as a whole, all of the actors have been on point, and this has translated to their authentic portrayal of the characters. Owen Teale agrees, and discusses the ways in which he’s taken on the role of Peter Knox and advocated for his character.

As a viewer, I especially appreciate Deb’s and Owen’s discussion of wanting to have a story that appeals to women in their 30s and addressing women at various stages of life. This also couples with the LGBTQ representation embedded in the series and the broader ways A Discovery of Witches encourages inclusion and empathy in entertainment and the real world.

In our interview with Teresa Palmer she tells us that she wasn’t familiar with the book series when it came out. Rather it was the script that really caught her attention and Teresa instantly felt connected to Diana Bishop. (And we know that Deb feels the exact same about Teresa!) Tez shares how she loves Diana’s passion and vulnerability and the journey Diana takes to come to terms with who she is as a witch. I ask Teresa a little more about the tension within Diana, between the academic and the supernatural being, and she discusses how the magic literally bubbles out of Diana, as she wrestles with suppress that side of herself.

Lachlan jumps in before we can get too spoiler-y, but tells us about the technical elements of filming magic scenes, especially as Diana’s magic grows over the series. Teresa also discusses the chemistry test with Matthew Goode and how organic their interactions felt from day one. At about 8:00, Teresa tells a story about how she and Matthew would goof around on set, to the point that a serious scene had to be transitioned to a comedic one. But ultimately, the series is a love story with a strong element of thriller, based as much as possible in the real world.

Both Teresa and Lachlan talk about adapting a series with such a dedicated fanbase. Teresa says this helps her want to do her best with the series and how they all appreciate the love of the fans: “I also have found it just thrilling to have this kind of energy behind the series.”

Finally, we chatted with Alex Kingston and Valarie Pettiford, who play Sarah Bishop and Emily Mather, Diana’s aunts who raise her after her parents’ deaths. Valarie and Alex speak about the ways in which their romantic relationship onscreen normalize LGBTQ relationships, especially in this world where being Queer isn’t what sets them apart. Rather, it’s one’s distinction as a witch, vampire, or daemon that they have to hide, not their love. Alex shares an interesting story about a photo at the Bishop house of Sarah and Emily wearing pussy-hats at their local Women’s March. Whereas one producer was concerned about being too political, Alex, Valarie, and Deb perceived it as being realistic. Sarah and Emily would have been at that march! Piggy-backing off of that, Alex and Valarie discuss how the key creative decision-makers on the series are women.

I follow with a question about the theme of family in the series and both Alex and Valarie talk about the tension between Sarah and Diana, motivated by deep care and concern for her niece. This also expands to a discussion of recognizing one’s ancestry and they ways in which the Bishop and Mather families have been connected for centuries.

Alex and Valarie also talk about seeing the first four episodes of the series and how impressed they are with they way the episodes have been shot, which helps to ground the story in a realism reminiscent of our world.

Women Are Battling China’s Angry Trolls. The Trolls Are Winning. The feminists’ social media accounts had been slowly disappearing in China for days. And when that wasn’t enough for their angry critics, a powerful voice on the internet stepped in to help. In a discussion on the popular Chinese platform Weibo, one of the critics asked for better guidelines on how to file complaints against women who shared feminist views. The user suggested that the company add “inciting mass confrontation” to the list of violations that could have them removed. A Weibo account long affiliated with the company’s chief executive, Wang Gaofei, joined the conversation to offer tips. “Here,” the person using the account said on April 14, posting a screenshot with easy instructions for filing complaints against the women. Under “type of complaint,” click “inciting hatred,” the screenshot showed. Under specific reason: “gender discrimination.” Women who express feminist views on social media have long been subjected to torrents of hateful comments. In China, not only do those views attract the attention of trolls, they can also lead to getting kicked off the platforms by furious users empowered by unlikely allies: the internet companies themselves. Several prominent Chinese feminists have had their accounts deleted from Weibo in the last two weeks following public complaints. According to the women, at least 15 accounts have been removed. The women say it is part of a growing online campaign to stamp out feminist voices in a country where the government controls the internet and social movements are swiftly cut down. Two of the women have filed lawsuits against Weibo. “I was speechless,” Liang Xiaowen, an outspoken Chinese feminist, said of the screenshot. While Mr. Wang’s name is not officially attached to the account, he has been identified as its owner in half a dozen state media reports and a podcast. “He accused me of gender discrimination, which is the most laughable thing in the world,” she said. Ms. Liang, a 28-year-old lawyer in New York, is one of the women whose accounts were removed by Weibo. She is suing the company for violating China’s civil code, saying it did not adequately explain its accusations against her. The women’s accounts first started disappearing after March 31. Two days earlier, Xiao Meili, a well-known feminist in China, had left a hot pot restaurant in the southwestern city of Chengdu, angry that a man had ignored her repeated requests to stop smoking illegally indoors. The man was so furious that he hurled a cup of hot liquid at Ms. Xiao and her friends. Ms. Xiao, 30, later uploaded a video about the incident, prompting a groundswell of support that soon unleashed a noxious backlash. That afternoon, she was besieged by thousands of hateful messages. Users dug up a 2014 photograph of Ms. Xiao holding a poster that said “Pray for Hong Kong” and used it to accuse her of supporting Hong Kong independence. Hours after the photo surfaced, Ms. Xiao discovered her Weibo account had been frozen. In a statement on April 13, Weibo said that four of the deleted accounts had posted “illegal and harmful” content, and it called on users to respect Weibo’s basic principles, which include “not inciting group confrontation and inciting a culture of boycott.” In addition to Weibo, Ms. Xiao has had her account removed by one other Chinese internet company. None of the companies responded to requests for comment. “This has caused a lot of damage to my spirit,” Ms. Xiao said in an interview. “Since March 31, I have been very nervous, angry and depressed.” Feminists in China say Weibo has applied a double standard when it comes to policing abuse against men and women. Weibo blocks the use of phrases such as “national male,” a derogatory term for Chinese men. But rape threats and words like “bitch” are permissible. Zheng Churan, a feminist whose account was also removed recently, said several of her female friends had tried to report offensive remarks to Weibo but had never succeeded. “It’s really obvious where the platforms are aligned on such matters,” Ms. Zheng said. China’s ruling Communist Party has long been wary of social activism that could challenge its rule and provoke instability. In 2015, the Chinese authorities detained Ms. Zheng and four other feminists on a charge of “picking quarrels and provoking troubles” ahead of a campaign about sexual harassment on public transportation. The detentions led to an international outcry. Feminist ideas have slowly entered the mainstream. Many women have been encouraged by the small gains in the country’s nascent #MeToo movement. And feminist thought appeals to Chinese women who feel that the government fails to address issues of gender discrimination, said Lu Pin, a veteran women’s rights activist based in New York whose account was also removed. There are few outlets for women to vent in China. “That’s why they go online,” Ms. Lu said. Weibo has played a central role in helping women find like-minded communities on the internet. It was on Weibo that women shared their thoughts on domestic violence, the difficulties of getting a divorce and gender discrimination in the workplace. Gender-related issues are often among the most talked-about subjects on the platform. But in a male-dominated culture, that has led to resentment. Many of the most active opponents of China’s rising online feminist discourse have hundreds of thousands of followers. Some are celebrated in state media and allied with a broader nationalist movement that sees any form of criticism as an affront to Beijing. Women are easy targets, facing death threats and accusations of being “separatists.” Douban, an internet forum and review website, has also recently removed at least eight groups dedicated to women’s issues, according to China Digital Times, a website that tracks Chinese internet controls. Douban declined to comment. After the hot pot incident, Taobao, an e-commerce site in China, removed 23 items from Ms. Xiao’s online store, saying that they were “prohibited content,” according to a notice viewed by The New York Times. All of the items had the word “feminist” written on them. Ms. Xiao sued Weibo in a Beijing court on April 14, seeking access to her account and $1,500 in compensation. After she posted her lawsuit on WeChat, China’s ubiquitous instant messaging platform, her public account was removed for “violating regulations.” Ms. Liang, the lawyer, said she was one of the many women inundated by abuse after she posted supportive messages for Ms. Xiao. She was furious when her Weibo account was frozen, because it meant she could no longer defend herself, she said. “It’s the equivalent of sealing your mouth shut, hanging you up and leaving you to burn,” she said.
