Moro became the unlikely receptacle of both these gal’s affections this episode, between Beau’s loud and enthusiastic appreciation of Moro’s criminal hustle, and Jester making sure Moro knows that Jester thinks she’s cute (and that she’ll kill her for lying to them). Beau as usual hyping up Jester’s awesomeness to everyone (in this case Caduceus) who will listen. Shockingly, this episode Beau seems to have acquired the ability to actually fool Jester into thinking she’s fine, which resulted in point loss and meant Caleb instead had to pick up the slack to gracefully get some help for the poor beat up monk. (For him, that’s +6 to Caleb/Faking Injury for Friendship)

-30 to Fjord/Shortcuts Just as when Captain of the Ball-Eater, Fjord is ALL ABOUT running into clear danger if it means shaving one or two days off of a trip. Into the eye of the storm! Into Ground Zero of the Calamity! We care for speed here, not safety!

+18 to Caleb/Jester and speaking of Caleb having a Thing for strong people, how he continues to single out Jester as the Strongest Woman, who even is Yasha, which creates a perfect combination of #ItPaysToBeADamselInDistress and #LovesToBeAKnightInShiningArmor between the two of them, as Caleb begs for assistance getting a horse on his moorbounder of COURSE Jester can do this alone, Jester squashing Caleb adorably and staying there for….a length of time while at Moro’s (I guess Caleb is the type to have people sit on his face huh), and Caleb very effectively pulling his “Oh no, I am so weak and delicate I must have a fainting couch to rest upon for a spell” to Jester’s delighted crowing over how weak he is. Caleb as usual thinking Jester’s out-of-the-box thinking with an aerial view is The Best Thing Ever. Jester wanting to get in on the Healing Caleb Action Caduceus has been hogging with a Cure Wounds, what do you mean Fjord is injured too? (#ItReallyDoesPayToBeADamselInDistress). Caleb’s Worrywarting directed at full strength at Marion Lavorre. +4 to Yasha/Cockblocking for Jester bringing Yasha in on the horse moving action. Point loss for Caleb’s Worrywarting creating Jester Worrying and making her lose sleep. Nein! Not okay!

+17 to Beau/Yasha because as we all know mutilating corpses with Beau is a sure way to her big gooey heart. Also, Beau adopting a Striking Pose after striking the enemy dead, and the Gay Power of that alone probably making Yasha’s rage drop, as she struggles to pick her jaw up off the floor and reorient towards combat.

-10 to The Mighty Nein/The Neighbors as they apparently carry a couplea severed heads in plain view all across town on their way to the Xhorhaus before storing them. According to the local Mighty Nein Neighborhood Watch, this is only the third or fourth weirdest thing they’ve done.

+24 to Caleb/Caduceus as Caduceus continues as always to think Caleb is the solution to all problems always with his cool magic and his alarms, though +5 to Cockblocking for both Jester and Beau who tragically remind him that there are other people out there who can also do things. The slip into nearly calling Caleb “Mr. Clay” instead of “Mr. Caleb” is of note, and someone needs to investigate what he’s been writing in those hearts in his journal pronto. Caduceus making Caleb his #1 priority in battle, #ItPaysToBeADamselInDistress, with his ray of enfeeblement, healing, attacks, and physically standing over the wizard in a defensive stance to protect him! Batting away attacking bats (while Caleb crawls around collecting guano!). Points taken away because poor Caduceus forgets for a moment that the next brightest thing after his own pink hair is Caleb’s. It’s still romantic if you’re saving people from trouble you sent their way, right? Right? Points gained for asking if Caleb is okay after the fight, and for them both being very dark, between advocating for decapitation and threatening Moro and her employee with decapitation, simmer down a second Caleb.

+10 to Caleb/Vulture Culture. Between Frumpkin’s new shape and getting Those Good Spell Components, our dear Caleb, covered once more in gore and shit and Death, is his happiest self. Hopefully he didn’t ruin his new fancy threads.

+2 to Beau/Hosting as Beau practices Manners and Decorum with a “no, sir” to the attacking demons (#CustomerService). Some mixed messages by following this up with pummeling them to death, but An Effort Was Made.

+4 to Caduceus/Nature as he found a new mushroom! Which will definitely not be a bad mushroom in any way.

+90 to Caleb/Cat-Shaped Creatures. There’s the usual spying Frumpkin rigmarole, but it says something about your love for cats when you’re willing to forgive, nay, even love, suspiciously dog-like behavior of gross licking for affection—so long as it’s coming from a cat. Caleb cleverly disposing of troublesome corpses and feeding his favorite members of the M9 at the same time. Caleb also adorably taking Jannick out for a little run on the Fields of Death, and all the Moorbounders coming in clutch as fighting machines (with some wonderful light-based assistance from Caleb, Support Catster Extraordinare), and somehow remaining unscathed during battle.

+45 to Fjord/Jester. Lips. Made. Contact. With. A. Cheek. That is very cheeky of you Fjord, if I do say so myself. Jessie is said, not once but twice, and Jester gets to be her true #LovesToBeAKnightInShiningArmor self as she saves Fjord repeatedly by murdering the demons attacking him, only getting slightly annoyed that he gets in trouble immediately after she saves him the first time. Seriously though, the amount of Goopy Feelings Jester has for saving this poor man….well, #ItPaysToBeADamselInDistress. Point loss for poor Jester failing to look as cool as the knights in the novels as she falls flat on her face with the handaxe strike, but she makes up for it by pounding the creature to death with her spiritual weapon instead, that was totally intentional. Point gains for Fjord being very Pleased with anything and everything Jester got up to, Jester pumping up Fjord’s accent and impersonation skills, contributing to Corpse Interrogation with her own Disguise Self, and the Excellence that was the fake Insta-Death spell the two of them threatened Moro with.

-8 to Nott/Yeza “Tell Veth I love her” does not make up for fucking ditching your husband without a word, Nott, you absolute asshole. Please talk to your spouse.

+13 to Caleb/Fjord/Jester In another great week for this triad, they all prove to be Excellent at Delivering Deceptive Threats, though Caleb is as per usual a little too serious about his contributions (though the other two are uh a bit more on the serious side as well this is a Bloodthirsty Throuple) The Epic Triangle Of Saving Each Other, as Jester rescues Fjord and Fjord hustles to rescue Caleb, followed by Jester’s healing action. Fjord taking joy in Jester falling on top of Caleb, and the both of them being very good about letting the Totally Actually Injured And Not At All Faking dramatic wizard take a short rest for Beau.

+1 to Fjord/Caleb. Most of their points this week were more applicable to Caleb/Fjord./Jester, but the instant “Moro, you got to die” when Caleb Can’t-Switch-Tasks Assassin Wizard suggests it is still very fun. Fjord sort of leaps to Caleb’s suggestions this episode, the ultimate yes-and-man.

+6 to Fjord/Detective Work as he steers the party clear of the Bad Tar Pits, they might have landed in quite a sticky situation otherwise

+20 to Critters/Detective Work, as the cast very loudly run through the Totally Natural Conclusion to the clues provided in the last ep, they Definitely Solved This Themselves, they had No Help From The Internet.

+14 to Fjord/Caduceus. Fjord offers to “loom” over Caduceus’ shoulder and points out that he looks “fleek” like damn, Caduceus, the boy is making an effort for you! As usual they are On The Same Wavelength and good cop/bad cop Moro and co. like pros, no discussion or even a conspiratorial glance required, they know what the jig is before anyone else. Fjord advocating for sending Moro money because that was Caduceus’ plan, no one is allowed to argue. Also being excellent interrogators of corpses together. Fjord is a huge fan of Caduceus’ magical food powers, #MagicalCrush, would “not turn down” Caduceus’ healing, and he kills some bats Cads was slapping around. Unfortunately without the bats Caduceus proceeds to slap a bunch of points out of the ship by saying he “doesn’t care.” That is cold.

+7 to Jester/Caduceus as they do a little awkward dance on the steps to make it around each other, and spending hours annoying everyone else in the party by talking about Cleric Things. Caduceus being impressed over Jester totally lying about being able to talk to dead horses, and Jester going wild over HOW COOL the Corpse Interrogation was. The Clerics Cuddling for comfort when the enemies first attack, since that was definitely what Jester and Caduceus were doing no questions here. Points taken away because Jester’s enthusiasm for Corpse Interrogation sort of glosses over how Caduceus “feels dirty” over the whole affair, they are apparently not too compatible in this area.

-5 to Nott/Yasha as Nott makes a sincere and successful effort to apologize to Yasha for sticking her like a pincushion and trying to be Nice and Supportive with memory games to help Yasha remember the “drow.” But points are drained away into the negatives as Nott goes a little too hard with the interrogation over Yasha having potentially killed people to make orphans (“that’s a cool name” and “Orphie” is terrible and does not make up for this nonsense), and Yasha’s well-received but still terrible allowance of Nott’s alcoholic predilections. They are a wonderful trainwreck to watch.

-20 to The Mighty Nein/Names. As of right now, there appears to be one (1) member of the Mighty Nein in Caduceus Clay who did not at some point either change their name or have some type of Name Angst over what someone else has named them. Though making faces at ‘Ducey might come to count for something, in time.

+11 to Nott/Jester Speaking of Disguise Self Shenanigans, how Nott is the Moro to Jester’s invisible bugbear, making them the logical pairing of the Corpse Interrogation Caper. Jester’s adorable confusion over her nickname being “Little Sapphire” which leads to Nott instantly screeching about how beautiful and perfect Jester is, that lovable dumbass. Nott using the word “shiny” to describe Jester, which seems technically a little odd but says loads about Nott’s affection for the gal, as this is the #1 lover of Shiny Valuable Things in the party speaking.

+8 to Jester/Yasha as Yasha in her sweet soft way also points out how Jester is very pretty and brings up Fluffernutter as a potential badass name that some of the people in her tribe might have been named for. Jester, for her part, directing Worrywarting in Yasha’s direction over how she was recognized and trying to give Yasha control over what they do next and what Yasha wants, though dear Yasha who cannot assert herself to save her life only manages to tentatively say she wants to know what’s going on before saying she’ll do whatever the group wants. (They! Want! What! You! Want! Yasha!)

-6 to Jester/Curtains, which surprisingly don’t taste as good to tieflings as they do to moths. Further experimentation required to determine how delicious they are to goblins, firbolgs, half orcs, aasimar and humans.

YOU GUYS I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS

Students learn better when they're interested in what they're doing, and it's a bad sign when you have a special word for that. Producers of technology tradeshows and conferences, according to their site.1 And so you can't assume it will have been hurting you long before you actually quit. With so much at stake, they have to be paranoid, but they were very deep. Moreover, these links represent a social network connecting the individuals and organizations who created the pages, and partly so I don't worry about losing them. Then the important question became not how to make money? The reason I warn startups not to get their hopes up is not to lie flat, but to get the rest you have sit through a movie. And so once university English departments were established in the late 90s was that they hoped to sell them to gullible retail investors; they hoped to be laughing all the way to find great questions is not to say you have to like your work more than any unproductive pleasure. After all, a Web 2. Now I know a number of people who want to be in a position to make everyone resonate at their frequency if they want to.

Why Warren Buffett wants you to refinance your mortgage now

With 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates around 3%, homeowners who haven’t refinanced a loan in the past year or two could be missing out on huge savings.

Ninety-year-old investment scholar Warren Buffett would wonder what you are waiting for.

He told attendees at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting in Los Angeles in May that 2021 offers great opportunity for borrowers thanks to the Federal Reserve’s commitment to keep its policy rate near zero.

“The economy fell off a cliff in March [2020]”Said Buffett. “It has been resurrected in an extremely effective manner by actions by the Federal Reserve.”

Mortgage rates have fluctuated this year, but they are still low enough to save hundreds of dollars a month by refinancing your mortgage.

To support the economy during the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis, the US Federal Reserve cut the key interest rate to almost zero last year. More recently, Fed officials have signaled that they will all but not leave rates on until 2023.

“It’s a fascinating time [for borrowers]”Buffett told investors, adding that the low interest rate environment was” extremely pleasant “.

While Buffett hasn’t (at least not yet) found a way to get 0% interest on loans (at least not yet), his holding company Berkshire Hathaway came close last year as it benefited from the Fed’s low interest rate environment.

“If you’re wrong and rates go up to 2%, which I don’t think they will, pay it off,” he said at the time. “It’s one-way renegotiation. It’s an incredibly attractive tool for the homeowner and you have a one-way bet.”

And remember, Buffett knows a few things about the real estate market. Aside from his company’s investments in energy, insurance, and telecommunications, Berkshire also owns HomeServices of America, the largest residential real estate agent in the United States, according to RealTrends.

Many households take advantage of the low lending rates. In late January, Americans filed for mortgage refinancing at the fastest pace since last March, although that pace has slowed, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

At current rates, an estimated 14.1 million homeowners are sitting on loans that they could refinance to cut their monthly costs by an average of $ 287, mortgage technology and data provider Black Knight recently reported.

You could use your savings to invest – perhaps with the help of a popular app that only allows you to add “change” to your portfolio.

Still on the fence about a refi? You are in a good position to do this if you currently have a 30 year mortgage of around 3.9% or more, and if your creditworthiness is exceptional (800 or higher) or very good (740 to 799) is.

If Buffett says it’s a good time to borrow money, maybe it is time to cut the cost of your mortgage.

wonder6oy wrote...and by 'Bad Edits', I mean tracks that have been rendered and sent to you without proper crossfading, resulting in loud 'pop's and 'click's. In Pro Tools, it's just a matter of pulling up the pencil tool and drawing them out - literally a 5-second process. And when that fails, I use Izotope RX to do the job. But neither of those are an option in S1, and I need a solution going forward because I have to deal with these ALL the time. Any help appreciated!

I cut and fade the edge of the clip. I do this a lot for taking the fret click out of bass at the beginning of notes. Hit 3 on the keyboard to bring up the 'Cut' tool, then leave my hand there and hit 1 to bring up the normal tool and grab the edge of the clip. I've used the draw tool in other DAWs and this way is much fast to me.

I wouldn't want them wasting time developing audio editing and embedding it, but partnering with someone to have a light version that does the basics through ARA and give you the option to upgrade if you need more advanced tools would be really nice. I mean, that was the whole purpose of ARA from the git go, wasn't it?

Exactly. If the devs do not want to do this right (or at all) - they should at least allow clean passage of audio to a designated editor and leave it at that. I too use RX but the fact that RX Connect simply does not work in S1 makes it is disappointing waste of time when apps like Nuendo/Cubase can use this like a dream. Time for Presonus to get off it's 'closed' sandbox approach and offer the ability to pass audio back and forth between some standard editors out there. (please consider RX and/or Wavelab as starters ) VP

Skaperverket wroteI've created a macro called 'Bounce to Finder' with Bounce Selection [Snap ('0')] Select in Pool Show in Explorer/Finder but for some reason S1 won't focus on the Browser window and the Pool when 'Select in Pool' is applied and the Pool is opened, so I have to do the Show in Finder command separately.

I ran in to that same issue when creating a drag location macro for non VST-XML sample players. What I did was adding the following before executing Show in Explorer/Finder: View | Browser [State '1'] Navigation | Up Navigation | Down

This thread is a little old and may have been lost but it also goes into this and shows how I do editing anyway: viewtopic.php?f=151&t=18309 I use an editing program on a mother machine networked to my main machine running Studio One. This works rather well in fact. You can open files that are even active in a Studio One session. Edit them and resave them with a slight title change and they can be easily dragged into the session. I find editors like Cool Edit Pro (Audition) are very fast and slick at editing audio. Might be good to have a range of built in basic edit operations though.

Please add your specs to your SIGNATURE. Search the STUDIO ONE 4 ONLINE MANUAL. Access your MY.PRESONUS account. OVERVIEW of how to get your issue fixed or the steps to create a SUPPORT TICKET. Hi all, went ahead and got RX6 during a recent upgrade promo but have run foul of the convoluted working method mentioned above! I know that Studio One is not supported by RX6 (anyone know why?) but had assumed that the workflow shown in the videos relating to RX4 and previous version/s of S1 (links posted by Skapervet) would suffice, however, even those clunky workflows are not working with my setup utilising Windows 10 pro/S1v3.5..../RX6. I can get the Connect & Monitor plugs to work, after a fashion, but even the Izotope suggested work-around for non-supported DAWs does not work and the combination of RX6 standalone with S1 is tenuous at best. Having said that, RX6 does offer a good set of restoration repair tools just don't expect the software to play nicely with S1..... Yet!!!! Perhaps this is why there is a conspicuos lack of tutorials (or any updatee videos from S1 Expert) relating to this. If you know different, please inform. Regards....

No Driver’s License: Session 17a

No Driver’s License is a Madoka Magica game I’m running for five players, using a homebrew of Yaruki Zero’s Magical Burst system. It follows five magical girls as they deal with an upheaval in the world’s magic system caused by some strange new three-eyed Incubators. They have to figure out what’s going on, who to trust, and how to put a stop to the cycle of despair.

I post session logs and omakes weekly, both as a reference for the players and for anyone who wants to follow along with the party’s misadventures.

Last time on No Driver’s License, the party tried to whisk one last loved one away to their secret cannibal-proof hiding place. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned- said loved one revealed an unexpected connection, and Makoto’s past literally caught up with her.

As a result of the harrowing conversation this new arrival had with her, Makoto filled up her “Feels burdensome” Trauma Track. This time, we deal with the fallout of that situation. We know the drill by now- or do we? Some dubious assistance arrives to help out, and the aftermath of the fight gets complicated.

The witch barrier this time is a battlefield- a war between stuffed animals and plant monsters. The plant monsters are winning, and the stuffed animals are on the retreat- including their queen, carried inside a giant palanquin. The players start chasing after this queen- although they themselves are affected by the barrier, manifesting as sort of rag-doll versions of themselves.

From the witch’s perspective...

The way this fight works is a sort of hybrid of previous approaches we’ve taken. Navigating the barrier and reaching the witch proper is done the way we did it for Sakura’s witch, with a series of modified Skirmish encounters against the familiars of the witch barrier. The actual fight against the witch, meanwhile, plays out using the Full Battle rules.

The first Skirmish of the fight is against some plant monsters.

The players, here, all elect to Go on the Offensive, and they all crit their rolls, crushing the Spread target for overkill. It’s then that I clue them in to the trick for this fight: the witch is actively retreating, and to catch up, they need to use the Run Away option in the skirmishes. Putting too much effort into taking out the mooks on the way means that the witch gains some distance- in this case, going from 3 to 4 abstract units away.

So, they’ve learned their lesson, right? Run Away, don’t fight!

Which is why the next encounter fucks them over, whoops. It’s a daffodil siege cannon, charging up a blast- and that blast is going to hit someone unless another player uses the Protect Someone move on them. Unfortunately, the witch controls who it targets, and the players don’t know who that is.

That’s Yukari, and only Seina rolls to protect- to protect Sakura, who doesn’t need it. Yukari takes a Personal Consequence and chooses... Harm.

Which is a little less gruesome than it sounds, because she’s a stuffed doll at the moment, but still. Eesh. Seina takes a shot, too, since they didn’t land a single Hit and therefore the cannon gets to fire again- but her Stamena ability lets her ignore the Personal Consequence from that Skirmish.

They roll... really well! Having bypassed the Fungi of the Tiger, they finally catch up with the witch proper, and we get into a Full Battle.

As you can see, things are a lot simpler this time, as the witch barrier exploration and such was abstracted away with Skirmishes- no worrying about positioning and range and so on, here. Sakura taffies the bearers, Yukari unloads a barrage of Consign to Oblivion shots, and Seina uses a Ranged Attack of her own. It’s a decent opening- the taffy deals some damage to all the bearers, and they take out a good chunk of the palanquin’s health.

Then it’s the witch’s turn. Here’s the things she can do:

The first thing she does is roll to escape from Sakura’s taffy, unbinding her bearers. She succeeds, and cuts them all out with a buzzsaw- they each take two damage in escaping.

Then she does the stampede move, followed by dropping the palanquin on top of Yukari’s head. And then, with the palanquin dropped, the bearers all make their attacks- the wolf and rabbit teaming up on Sakura and Seina, and the bear and mouse targeting Yukari.

Every single one of the witch’s attacks hits home, and Yukari is reduced from full health to knocked-out-of-magical-girl-form in a single turn. On detransforming, the plushie-self effect ends, and that missing arm gets a whole lot less fun for her.

The mouse- Number 3, according to the palanquin’s occupant- attempts to finish Yukari off, but its punch is so weak that it does 0 damage.

Things are going pretty badly for the players- but thankfully, backup shows up! Cho arrives, first- she hadn’t gone far before Makoto witched out, so she was able to turn around and see what was happening.

(Which Sakura takes immediate offense to, of course.)

From the witch’s perspective, it looks like...

Also, the party gets another helpful reinforcement who happened to be, like, right there.

Kimiko explains that she really is there to help- she’s not going to try to take Makoto’s soul seed while the party’s still holding Yoshe hostage, and it’s not in her interest to let the party get killed by witches. Getting killed means you can’t witch out yourself, and subsequently get eaten! What a waste! She has every reason to totally genuinely be a good samaritan here, no fooling, for real.

The party doesn’t fucking trust her for a second, obviously.

Sakura goes for the bear, which is keeping Yukari bound- thwacks it with her candy axe, makes it drop her. Seina bombards the rabbit (number 4) and wolf near her with a Petal Storm. They’re making progress on taking out these palanquin-bearers!

Kimiko- pretty much ignoring the party’s demands that she leave- asks if she can help. They eventually decide on orders- she can help take out the bearers, but Sakura will turn on her if she lays one finger on the palanquin itself. Kimiko “agrees”, although she’s not taking it too seriously- she doesn’t really consider the party a threat. She demonstrates just how little she’s threatened by instantly stabbing the wolf and bear (numbers 1 and 2) to death with Koken’s Divine Reach, her magic extend-o lance.

Yukari is not okay with Honoka helping at all.

After Yukari descends into blood loss delirium, and Sakura tries to comfort her, the witch takes its turn.

The palanquin uses its own moves to fire machineguns at Seina, but Cho takes the hits for her. Number 3, meanwhile, continues to be completely ineffectual, and suffer verbal abuse from Our Holy Lady of Command.

Cho starts going on the offensive, summoning some giant butterflies with laser eyespots. It’s a lot of ranged attacks all at once, rivaling Yukari’s damage output- and she can summon more of those butterflies every turn, increasing her DPS more and more as the fight progresses. She also heals Seina a little from when she got hit by the wolf and rabbit earlier, revealing her Priestess classification.

The players move- Sakura attacks the palanquin and heals Yukari a little, Seina takes out the rabbit and heals her more, and Yukari’s then healed up enough again to fire off some shots.

...At Kimiko, instead of the witch.

She uses her extendo-spear, and stabs Yukari for half her health.

Aaaaaanyway then it’s the witch’s turn! First, she uses TO SHIRK THY DUTY IS FORBIDDEN, regenerating her dead bearers.

The stampede does some damage, but at that point... well, first Kimiko spears the mouse, hurting it pretty good- and then Seina uses Petal Storm. The palanquin’s got health to spare, but... the witch was never Our Holy Lady of Command.

(You might have seen earlier- the witch’s skirmish options for the cannibal flower fight were labeled “NO.3 OPTIONS”.)

The mouse bearer, Number 3, was always the real witch. The players actually deliberately left it alone at first, feeling sorry for how the palanquin was bullying it. But now, with it dead...

As soon as the witch barrier’s gone, Sakura doesn’t waste time. She immediately drops taffy on Kimiko, before she can try to go for Makoto’s seed.

Then Yukari tries to point a gun at her, but... she’s still missing an arm, which ruins her attempt at a threatening gesture. Kimiko breaks into a giggle fit- which proves sufficient distraction for Sakura to hit her with an axe.

Yukari eventually realizes that all this stalling is an attempt to get them to leave and go home- in hopes that they’ll lead her right back to their base, where she can rescue Yoshe. When she calls her out on it, Kimiko frowns and disappears- presumably intent on following them from the shadows.

After that, Fumi-chan shows up, and offers to revive Makoto. Reluctantly- and after taffying Fumi-chan and preparing countermeasures in case she tries to steal Makoto’s soul seed- they hand it over, and Fumi-chan resurrects her as promised.

...Against Cho’s protests. She doesn’t want the deceiver resurrected- not after she showed her true colors and tried to kill everyone.

(Oh, and Sakura also makes an attempt to kill Fumi-chan. She kicks her while she’s trapped, and... Fumi-chan doesn’t react. She lies there like a plush toy. The team assumes she’s vacated her body or something, and Yukari tries to retrieve her corpse from the taffy.)

That... dealt with, they turn their attention to Cho. It’s decided that trying to string her along and work with her religious beliefs is not a sustainable solution. Which... well, their new approach doesn’t exactly work wonders, either.

Makoto likewise confesses that she isn’t really Ikebana-no-Uzume- but it seems Cho’s already come to this conclusion. She’s decided that the elders were right, and that Makoto is a deceiver. She reached this conclusion because her wish magic- the ability to find her goddess- led her directly to Seina, the second time she tried it. (The first time, it led her to the hospital room with both Makoto and Seina.)

Makoto’s had just about all she can take of this, and takes off running. Sakura runs after her girlfriend, intending to comfort her.

Meanwhile, Cho intends to prove that Seina is the true avatar of Ikebana-no-Uzume.

(In case you don’t remember, that’s what Seina’s wish was- the ability to make people care. Ikebana-no-Uzume is exactly Seina’s deal.)

Yukari, who’s still there, notices this parallel- and concocts a theory wherein Cho is right, kinda, and that her prophecy about Ikebana-no-Uzume came from a magical girl with precognition.

Cho turns her attention back to Seina, trying to get her to understand- she has to be her goddess!

So we have a cultist worshipping someone who insists she’s not her goddess, intent on helping her realize her destiny. Yukari reminds Seina that her magic is about changing hearts, and Cho is willing to let Seina do whatever she wants to her. Seina’s talked into trying to magic Cho into understanding Seina’s point of view- which she succeeds at, according to the roll. A crit, which means it has unintended side effects.

So... all that happens?

Hmmmmm. Wonder where that came from!

That pretty much wraps this scene- Yukari goes off to find Sakura and Makoto, and Seina takes Cho to her house, which is currently empty (the Takamines are still hiding out at Reiko’s.) Cho confessed to not actually having anywhere to stay, after the cult was destroyed, so she’ll be staying at Seina’s house for the time being.

So, um... things get chronologically weird in terms of how I’ll be presenting these recaps, next. There’s a scene with Sakura and Makoto that’s technically part of the session, but that takes place chronologically after an extensive omake, and then sort of... segues into it? We got mixed up with how long certain things took, and had to mess around with the timing of events.

What I’m going to do is, this’ll be Session 17a, and then I’ll make a separate post folding in the single session 16 omake (relevant to the remainder of this session and the long plotty omake that followed), and call that Session 17b. Look for that in a bit.

Annalyn, Kaze, and Japes Strike Back!

Beneath the Tangles continues to expand, both in the quality of work our volunteers are creating as we seek to share our passion for anime, manga, and light novels, and in how we reach out to our audiences. So it’s hard to imagine that there was a time when we almost shut our doors for good. At the end of 2015, I realized I was burnt out, both creatively and from serving through this digital ministry. I was looking for new opportunities, ways to stretch myself as a writer and creator, and was also discouraged by the contraction of our readership. In sum, I was ready to let Beneath the Tangles go—if not permanently, then at least into a long hibernation.

Looking back, it would have been a bad choice to halt the momentum of the blog, but I was tired and needing rest. So what else was there to do?

Enter Japes.

I don’t remember exactly how the conversation went, and how everything developed, but I did realize that Japes would be the man to lead Beneath the Tangles in my stead, if he was willing to take the job. Thankfully, he did (or at least was kind of enough to accept my request!), and was soon joined by two of our other writers and trusted colleagues, Annalyn (who now usually goes by Lex) and Kaze. They took charge for more than a year, until I returned in spring of 2017, and instituted a number of changes that set a foundation for what Beneath the Tangles is now, including a more professional approach to our content and to editing; a heavier focus on more thoughtful articles; and emphasis on other media, including the podcast.

We four chatted recently about that year + of leadership—what it entailed and what it meant:

Twwk: When I left Beneath the Tangles, I was so worn out that I paid zero attention to the blog for months. It was a while, then, before I realized that Japes had asked the rest of you to step into a leadership role. How did this triumvirate form?

Kaze: I honestly don’t remember the exact details. I recall Japes approaching us with the proposal because he realized he couldn’t handle the task alone (a testament to how amazing Twwk is for doing it!). At the time, I was heavily invested in advancing the blog’s success, so I was very interested in taking up responsibilities beyond just writing.

Japes: I’m really going to have to jog my memory as well. It was only a few years, but, considering the sheer number of life changes I’ve experienced in that time, it feels like it was a lifetime ago.

Without getting too deep into matters (yet!), though, I know that Twwk first handed me the reins when I was in college. Personally, that period was the perfect overlap of my heightened desire to discover my faith for myself, my peak anime obsession, and an absurd amount of free time. Around graduation, it didn’t take long for me to figure out that running the blog like I had opted to was not one person’s job. Or rather, it wasn’t one working person’s job. I quickly found myself on the road to burn-out after I moved here to Tokyo.

At the time, both Kaze and Lex were extremely involved as well. The three of us naturally found ourselves working together, and between Kaze’s deep knowledge of Japanese and otaku culture and Lex’s writing and editing abilities, it seemed like a no-brainer to ask them to be a part of leadership.

Twwk: What do you remember best during that time you three led together?

Japes: I clearly remember the enormous relief I felt upon being able to share editing duties with two other people!

Kaze: I remember a lot of discussions about how to transition BtT from a simple blog to more of an organization with a stronger presence and sense of community. One of the ways we attempted that was making a Discord channel to connect with readers. It didn’t turn out as we hoped, since we shut it down after a few months, but I hear that’s been started back up again.

We passed around a lot of other ideas that never came to fruition as we always came to the same problems being a lack of time, resources, knowledge/experience, and as one might assume, money. Still, it was a memorable period brainstorming with Japes and Lex about how to accomplish our overly ambitious hopes for the site.

Lex (Annalyn): Goodness, there’s a lot to remember. Highlights include brainstorming and video hangout sessions with Japes and Kaze. Sometimes we talked BtT, but sometimes we just hung out—played an .io or Pokemon game as we chatted. We obviously knew each other before, but this time added a dimension to our friendship that I’m really grateful for.

I definitely remember my hesitation over some of the changes. I was very slow to get behind some of the ideas for growth. I was afraid that a more professional look could take away from the warm, casual, inviting look that first made me feel welcome in the comments. I also wanted to ensure that we grew in accordance with our mission and not for growth’s sake. Not to mention how I was concerned about our—and Japes’ in particular—ability to keep up with too many additions. But I trusted Japes and Kaze, and together, we were able to do some great stuff.

I remember bringing in some fantastic new staff members, who I now can’t imagine my online community without.

Oh, and writing posts on behalf of BtT on MyAnimeList. That was cool.

Each memory unlocks another one, so I’ll make myself stop now.

Oh, circling back to an earlier question: I believe we stepped up to at least some admin duties with Japes earlier than suggested above. I think as early as January, maybe February that year. Because by March, we had MDMRN on board, and I was scheduling Anime March Madness tweets.

Twwk: Ah, I have you to thank for Anime March Madness in addition to MDRMN! I had no idea. I love that tournament…so much fun to put together!

Lex: Well, it was MDRMN’s idea. We just said yes. And, in my case, scheduled tweets about it.

Twwk: I guess that leads to my last questions, which are 1) What led you all to put the site back into my hands and 2) What are you all up today—lifewise and related to this hobby / ministry, if anything?

Kaze: What led me to hand the site back over was the harsh reality of being a working adult. Between the exhaustion of a full time job and the daily *2-3 hour commute* I simply did not have the time or energy to be so involved with the site. I tried to keep up with writing blog posts, but nowadays, the time I spend on anime and games is far less than before while dropping writing almost completely, though some readers may have noticed that I now report on anime conventions I attend as that takes much less time and thinking on an event I was going to attend anyway. I still keep up with ongoing anime, but I amaze even myself at how quickly I drop things now when comparing to the habits I had only a few years ago.

Lex: I’m still writing and editing—but now, it’s as a career. I work freelance. I’ve been doing this for years, but I feel like I really got my business running on my terms in the past several months. Unfortunately, no otaku or similarly geeky clients so far, though I’d like that someday.

I don’t have the time or energy to write simply as a hobby anymore. I participate in NaNoWriMo every year now, but that’s pretty much it. I’ll admit I’ve drifted away from anime. I think all that blogging burned me out a bit. It’s not the escape it once was. It’s kinda weird to be on the fringes of that, unaware of the season schedule. I’m getting increasingly out of touch with current anime—a big difference from when I was blogging regularly and knew the current anime, the Twitter hashtags to use, etc. But I still enjoy it. Still watch it. Just not as often.

Japes: The more I hear from Lex and Kaze, the more I remember myself. My answer essentially echoes what Annalyn and Kaze said: life hit. It comes at you fast, and that’s a lesson I learned the hard way. Over the past three and a half years, I’ve moved across the globe, worked in three different industries, gotten married, and experienced numerous changes in hobbies. It’s made me appreciate not only the time and work you put into the site, but the balance you strike between hobbies, career, family, and ministry. I feel like I’m getting better, but it’s absolutely a lengthy process.

These days, I’ve moved into translating Japanese to English professionally, mainly in the gaming scene, though I’m hoping to move into a more administrative role in the near future. Though I’ve become a bit more disconnected from the anime community, I’ve found that my relationship with my wife and with my colleagues has broadened my horizons in the otaku community at large, if you want to call it that. Manga and video games have become more a part of my life than they were several years ago, certainly. Ironically, though, I think my current lifestyle has taught me to appreciate a lot of more mainstream Japanese media that would have once made me scoff.

In terms of ministry work, that has been quite the journey in and of itself. My first year here in Japan, my “job” job intersected heavily with ministry work, so that was the focus of much of my time and energy. After that year, when I moved into datacenter work, I experienced for the first time what it felt like to be totally spiritually isolated. My work and hobbies were no longer oriented around my religious beliefs, and there was nobody telling me to go to church, so I found myself just naturally slipping into a comfortable, but lonely, hole of apathy. I would go on far too long if I gave all the details, so I’ll just summarize by saying that my experiences here in Japan and in different career fields have helped me to balance different priorities and to discover the benefits of things in my life I once considered nuisances. That has led me to a refueled zeal for embracing Christianity in a more intentional way.

Now I know you’re supposed to be the one asking the questions here, Twwk, but I have to ask: How did you feel about Beneath the Tangles during those years of your absence?

Twwk: I’m on the spot now? Haha. Well, I could echo a common refrain here—burnout. I needed all that time away to rest, and I could rest knowing it was in your hands, and Kaze’s and Lex’s. I also underwent an apprenticeship of sorts in writing (though my editor doesn’t know I consider it as such!) and learned so much about social media, that when I came back to a site that was better structured and putting out stronger content, I felt I could contribute to this upward movement, to places the blog had never gone before and couldn’t with me as I was. So to put it into an anime metaphor, your time together was like a shounen manga where the hero (me of course? LOL) goes away to train and other heroes band together and train as well, and then everyone gets back together to fight the common enemy.

Except, of course, Kaze and Lex departed for the reasons mentioned, and you’ve also been too busy to contribute as I know you wish you could. And I really wish you three were still here helping guide the ship, as your strengths would make up for my weaknesses. But as I’ve learned, this ministry and our lives are points on a grid of this journey as we’reused to serve God in others’ lives. He moves us as he wills, and if that’s away of Beneath the Tangles, it’s for a reason, though the impact you three made will continue to feed this site and future iterations of it in profound way until the journey for BtT is finally done. So thank you for all you did—Beneath the Tangles would certainly no longer exist if it weren’t for all your effort, much less reach the audience we do now. I will always be indebted.

High Frequency Stuff; This Game

Peater has been quite considerate in showing me around the city like the locations of stores and companies. For the record, the tallest building with the word 'HOPE' at the top feels kind of ominous with its position, but I digress. Nick Saban decide between Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts Alabama Crimson Tide starter

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- No matter how many times the final two plays of the College Football Playoff National Championship have been replayed within the Alabama football offices this offseason, they still don't make sense.

One play, Tua Tagovailoa appears lost, scrambling wildly before committing the cardinal sin of taking a sack and a loss of 16 yards on first down in overtime. Down by three points, backed out of comfortable field goal range at the 41-yard line, it's a complete disaster. But the freshman quarterback does the unthinkable on the next play: Calmly, he takes the shotgun snap, steps up in the pocket and fires a picturesque, game-winning touchdown pass for a 26-23 win.

Confetti falls from the rafters. The trophy is lifted. All is forgiven. But Alabama's coaches can't forget. The 35 seconds from the moment Tagovailoa hit the turf to the moment that fateful touchdown pass left his hand is as concerning as it is inspiring. It's agonizing, really, the wrench thrown into one of the most high-profile and high-stakes quarterback battles in recent memory.

Should Saban ride the momentum and the promise of a wild card with zero career starts in Tagovailoa? Or should he stick with Jalen Hurts, the quarterback who started the title game, who threw only one interception all season and has a 26-2 career record, but also serious questions about his ability to throw the football with consistency?

Everyone seems to have an opinion on what Saban should do. The Tagovailoa and Hurts camps want a decision, and would like one quickly, as they consider their long-term plans. But the 66-year-old Saban isn't in a rush. If anything, he sees the problem he has as a good one.

How did we get here?

Alabama's quarterback battle didn't begin the moment Saban benched Hurts at halftime of the national championship game. Not really. What happened against Georgia, when Tagovailoa became an overnight sensation, only served to pour lighter fluid on an already simmering situation.

Inside the Alabama coaching offices, Hurts' hold on the starting job had become increasingly unstable over the course of the previous year. Despite winning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors as a true freshman in 2016, he hadn't shown significant progress as a passer. The offense had become stagnant and, according to multiple sources, skill players had grown frustrated with Hurts' inability to spread the ball around.

Granted, the offense was still effective in most games with Hurts running the ball, but its one-dimensional nature left the potential for exploitation against higher-quality defenses. Case in point: Alabama's only two losses over the course of the last two seasons came to Auburn and Clemson, two teams loaded with defensive line talent that finished in the top 11 nationally in scoring defense in each of the past two years.

Meanwhile, Tagovailoa captured the attention of coaches in practice with his arm strength and accuracy. It was as if the lefty from Hawaii had eyes on the sides of his head, he had such a good feel for the pass rush.

While Saban sticking with Hurts as the starter wasn't necessarily a surprise because of his experience, the fact that Tagovailoa's role was limited solely to mop-up duty was. Of the seven games during the regular season in which Tagovailoa attempted at least one pass, all were blowouts of 18 points or more.

However, there was confidence among coaches that Tagovailoa was ready for the big stage.

The defending champs define consistent excellence, but QB uncertainty and a reliance on youth have them far from comfortable.

"Hurts was undefeated before the Auburn game," said one former staffer. "I don't care how tight the other guy's spirals are. You don't pull an undefeated quarterback for an unknown one. But things ramped up with all the free time after the loss to Auburn."

The Tide still made the College Football Playoff despite a 26-14 loss to their rival in the regular-season finale. In the lead-up to their semifinal game against Clemson, Hurts fell ill and was forced to miss several days of practice. Tagovailoa received all of the first-team reps as a result, and the practices were some of the best for the offense all season. As one former coach put it, "I don't think the ball hit the ground."

The plan was to play Tagovailoa some against Clemson, sources confirmed, and it was discussed among coaches during the game when might be the best time to put him in. But even with Hurts struggling to get anything going in the passing game, it became apparent that Clemson wasn't going to move the ball against Alabama's defense, and coaches ultimately decided to keep Tagovailoa on the sideline, fearing a change might affect Hurts' psyche for the championship game.

Feeling let down, the Tagovailoa family expressed its frustration with the situation and, internally, came to a decision: If Tagovailoa didn't play against Georgia, he was going to seriously explore transferring.

During the ESPN MegaCast Coaches Film Room broadcast, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said that he couldn't have predicted Saban benching Hurts at halftime, let alone in favor of a true freshman quarterback with no meaningful experience.

"In there, when we weren't on television, we were surprised," Gundy said months later. "Everybody was like, 'Would you do that? I don't know if I'd do that. Would you do it? I don't know.' So we were a little bit shocked."

Since winning the game's Offensive MVP award that night, Tagovailoa has become the toast of Tuscaloosa. He gave a pregame speech to the Alabama women's basketball team and delivered the first serve at an Alabama men's tennis match. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook gave him 10-1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy, trailing only Stanford's Bryce Love (5-1) and Wisconsin' Jonathan Taylor (7-1), even though Hurts hadn't yet been technically dethroned as the starter.

But for anyone who didn't think it was an actual competition, all they needed to do was see Tagovailoa return to practice in the spring, only a few days after breaking a finger in his throwing hand. After all, who risks further injury if they're a sure thing? At the spring game, despite being unable to play, Tagovailoa dressed in full pads.

The same morning, in a move that wasn't seen as a coincidence by some, his brother, 2019 quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, verbally committed to Alabama on the steps of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Despite Tagovailoa's absence, however, Hurts failed to capitalize on having the stage to himself, completing 19 of 37 passes for 195 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

It should be said that despite the competition and the whirlwind surrounding them, Hurts and Tagovailoa aren't bitter enemies. They're quite supportive of one another. Tagovailoa never let his chagrin over a lack of playing time during the regular season affect his relationship with Hurts, whom he thanked for showing him the ropes as a true freshman. And when Tagovailoa supplanted Hurts in the title game, no one in the Alabama locker room was happier for Tagovailoa than Hurts, who told reporters that his understudy was "built for this."

Alabama offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher said that if he had a dollar for every time he has been asked about his team's quarterback situation this offseason, he'd have enough money to retire. He never could have ever envisioned this situation a year ago, saying that if he had been told then that Hurts would eventually be battling for his job he would have said, "You're crazy."

"It's a testament to recruiting and just bringing in a lot of talented guys," Pierschbaher explained. "Really, at Alabama, your position is never safe, regardless of who you are."

Can Hurts and Tagovailoa coexist?

Make no mistake: If Hurts were to become available on the transfer market, he would be a hot commodity. A proven winner with 61 touchdowns in two seasons, suitors would be lining up at his door. It's not just that he can run, one head coach said of Hurts, "but he also sees the field and has a great arm."

That's why his father, Averion, wasn't necessarily wrong when he told Bleacher Report this spring that his son would be "the biggest free agent in college football history" if he were to transfer. But while transferring certainly is an option for Hurts, it has never been a threat. Before the article was published, Averion met with Saban one-on-one to tell him that they were content to let the competition play out rather than leave early. If a difficult decision had to be made, then so be it, but that would only happen after a starter was named.

Shortly after the article was released, Averion called to reiterate to Saban that nothing had changed from their previous conversation. What went largely unsaid at that time, though, was that Tagovailoa was in a similar situation. Intimating the possibility of transferring, he told people he didn't want to go through another season as the backup.

In June, new legislation paved the way for both quarterbacks to coexist: The NCAA would now allow players to compete in up to four games while still retaining the ability to redshirt. So if Saban wanted to carry the competition into the first few games of the season -- as he's done time and time again in the past -- he is now free to do that without either quarterback losing a valuable year of eligibility.

The new rule doesn't solve every problem, of course. Should the competition last two games, for instance, managing the remaining two games for the backup would be paramount. An injury of any kind would create tremendous pressure to burn the redshirt, weighing the quarterback's future versus the needs of the team.

When former East Carolina quarterback Gardner Minshew flipped his commitment from Alabama to Washington State in the spring, it removed what would have been a valuable safety net in terms of depth at the position. While Mac Jones has shown improvement, he's still a redshirt freshman with no experience. The only other scholarship quarterback on the roster is Layne Hatcher, an unranked prospect previously committed to Arkansas State.

Heading into fall camp, the momentum to win the job is squarely with Tagovailoa. But Hurts hasn't been counted out yet. After Saban said at SEC media days that he had "no idea" whether Hurts would be part of the roster to start the season, Hurts met with him to say he wasn't leaving and that his plan, regardless of his playing situation, would be to stay and graduate in December.

"I think Jalen will rise in this competition," said a former Alabama staffer, "and maybe it's given him even new life."

Another former Alabama staffer said that he thinks first-year offensive coordinator Mike Locksley could be good for Hurts and would actually call a game that's better suited for his skill set.

"The players know Tua is a better passer, but they also trust Jalen," the former staffer said. "It's a good problem to have, one a lot of coaches would love to have, and that's what has separated Alabama under Saban, his ability to create competition at every position and the players buying into that competition."

What will Saban do?

As for Saban, what he hoped would be a private matter has become far too public for comfort.

Averion's comments caused a stir, of course, but the attention paid to Tagovailoa wasn't ideal, either. In May, Tagovailoa's hometown in Hawaii threw him what was billed as a four-hour "Hometown Hero Parade." And even though media rarely are granted contact with Crimson Tide players outside of practice, two local outlets made the trip and secured one-on-one interviews with Tagovailoa and his family during the week of celebration.

Prior to the start of camp, Saban attempted to stymie any more unwanted headlines.

"The one thing I've talked to both kids about is that they can't go into this ... with the attitude, 'If I don't win the job, then I'm going to transfer,'" Saban said. "If that's the case, then you're not totally committed to what you're supposed to do. You're ready to cut and run as a competitor before you ever start? That ain't good. Now, neither kid has said that, but you've got other people saying it."

Saban said he has relayed a similar message to the families of both players as well.

"The guy who's going to be our quarterback is the guy who wins the team. It's the way it's always been. We're going to let it play out on the practice field."

But perhaps more intriguing than Saban's management of the narrative surrounding the competition is the internal predicament he faces as a coach. The position battle, arguably the most important of his career, isn't just a question of experience and talent. It's also a matter of style that could rewrite his M.O. as a head coach of more than 20 years.

Saban, who has won five national championships at Alabama and one at LSU, has long valued a quarterback with experience that he can trust to take care of the offense -- a "game manager," as he has often said. And in Hurts, there's no question he has just that. Hurts rarely turns the ball over, and his leadership has been evident from the moment he started as a true freshman.

The allure of Tagovailoa, on the other hand, is undeniable. He's perhaps the most talented thrower Saban has ever had. Despite his lack of experience, despite his sometimes reckless choices with the football, he has the potential to unlock the Alabama offense, incorporating more pass-catchers and opening up a downfield attack that's been missing.

"I told them both, 'The more that you can do in your performance, your leadership, how you affect other people, the relationships you have on the team and the confidence that you develop in other players in your ability to distribute the ball, because that's what the quarterback is -- the distribution center of the ball -- then that's the guy who's going to have the best opportunity to win the team," Saban said.

While some in and around the program have already pinned Tagovailoa as the favorite to win the job, Saban hasn't made up his mind. He has seen too many things go sideways during his career -- too many fluke injuries, too many momentum swings -- to predict the future.

FIRST DRIVE: 2018 Audi S5 Coupe

There are certain people that when you see them in pictures, they’re attractive but when you see them in person, or even just in a video, when you can see them move and see their mannerisms, they’re downright seductive. There’s just something about them that attracts you to them but you need to see them move, interact with them or talk to them to understand it, to see their true beauty. Alicia Vikander is my go-to example for that. In pictures, she’s a very pretty woman. When you see her in a movie, see that coy look, she’s irresistible. There’s something effortlessly seductive about her. The same goes for the 2018 Audi S5 Coupe.

Seductive Styling

When I first saw the new, second-generation Audi S5, it was in photos from its launch party. In those photos, I liked the new S5 from what I had seen. It was good looking and sporty but I felt that it wasn’t as pretty or as seductive as the previous, Walter de Silva-penned generation or even the BMW 4 Series. Then, just a few weeks ago, a Tango Red example was dropped off in front of my garage for me to borrow for a week and, almost immediately upon seeing it in person, I was smitten.

Seeing the Audi S5 Coupe in person really helps you understand just how pretty it really is. It’s muscular and aggressive, thanks to slightly flared rear wheel arches, fat C-pillars and a shoulder line that accentuates its rear wheels. If you didn’t know it was all-wheel drive, you might mistake it for a rear-wheel drive coupe. But it’s not just its overall shape that makes it looks so aggressive. Its sheet metal is so heavily and sharply creased that it seems as if it’s been stretched tightly over the muscular bodywork underneath. Pair all of that with large front air intakes, a rear diffuser and quad exhaust pipes and you have a car that simply stuns.

And stun it did, as everyone who saw the S5 or went for a ride was immediately won-over. It’s a gorgeous car and one that won smiles, waves and compliments everywhere it went. In fact, it even won over an friend who’s a BMW enthusiast that owns two. We actually tested the S5 Coupe back-to-back with a BMW 440i Coupe (Comparison test to come soon) and not a single person involved felt that the Bimmer was better looking. The S5 is a stunner.

Stunning Cabin

That goes for the inside, as well. Audi has been making some top-notch cabins as of late and the Audi S5’s is one of the best. Sure, it’s basically exactly the same as the one you’d find in an Audi S4 but that’s not really a bad thing. It just looks so exciting, from the diamond-stitched seats to the flat-bottomed steering wheel to the carbon fiber trim. It all looks incredibly sporty and makes you feel like you’re in something special, not just your average sporty coupe. The slick-looking MMI screen and the simply awesome Virtual Cockpit don’t hurt, either.

All of that technology is slick and easy to use, especially the Virtual Cockpit. We’ve spent a lot of time using it before and it never fails to impress. We do wish Audi’s MMI was a bit easier to use, though, as it can get a bit confusing, with several different sub-menus. As it stands now, it isn’t as good as BMW’s iDrive. It’s still one of the better systems on the market but it isn’t the best Bavarian. However, a new version has debuted in the new Audi A8 and A7 and it features two touchscreens, rather than the dash-mounted screen and rotary dial. We used that new system at the NY Auto Show and it works well but we’ll have to spend more time in it to know for sure if it’s better.

What Audi absolutely nails in the S5, though, are touch points. Not only do the seats look great but they feel fantastic and were completely comfortable over several hours of driving. I’m also a huge fan of Audi’s flat-bottomed steering wheel in the S5; it’s thin and covered in rich leather, making it great to hold. One oddity about the steering wheel is that you can’t have the flat-bottomed wheel heated, only the round one. A feature that would have been nice in the 20-degree weather.

New Turbocharged Engine

The best part, though, comes when you press that red-rimmed aluminum starter button on the console. Press that and the 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 snorts to life, as the digital tachometer does its little dance. It’s dramatic and exciting, making it feel like an event each and every time. There’s a bark from the exhaust when it starts, letting you and everyone else around you know that the S5 has some grunt. It would also sound great in a garage every morning.

Speaking of its turbocharged V6, it replaces the old S5’s 3.0 liter supercharged V6, an engine that many fans loved. Being supercharged, the old Audi S5 had zero turbo-lag and was seriously punchy. It also had a nice growly noise. This new turbo-unit, though, does come with a bit of lag, more so than I had anticipated for a “Hot-V” engine, where the turbocharger is mounted in the “V” of the engine for a sharper response. It makes up for that lag with more power than the old car, though.

Making 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, this new Audi S5 makes 21 more horsepower than the outgoing car and 44 lb-ft more torque. While that doesn’t sound like a lot, it feels like a lot more on the road. A lot of that has to do with the fact that the new turbocharged engine makes its peak torque at 1,370 rpm, while the older supercharged engine needed 2,900 revs to do so. So while the new S5 has a touch of lag, its torque comes on like a sledgehammer immediately after and it pulls hard through the rev range. According to Audi, 0-60 mph happens in just 4.4 seconds and we have no reason to doubt that. It feels properly quick.

Paired to that engine is an eight-speed ZF-sourced automatic and it works perfectly. Sure, a dual-clutch might be snappier and a bit more exciting but the ZF eight-speed is a delight, with smooth, rapid shifts in manual-mode and the ability to disappear and softly shrug off gear changes in auto-mode. We’d prefer a six-speed manual over both kinds of automatics but the auto in the S5 is no hindrance at all. In fact, it made cruising on the highway and being stuck in traffic that much easier.

The Drive

We drove our Audi S5 tester from central New Jersey up to New York State during its stay, sort of on the border of both states. That drive consisted of six or seven hours of total driving, with a good mix of highways and twisty back roads to allow us a broad range of roads to sample our test car on. And through all of it, the Audi S5 seduced.

On the highway, it’s smooth and stable, even at very high, let’s say less-than-legal speeds. At highway speed, the S5 is rock-solid stable and never seems to feel nervous, regardless of speed. It’s also surprisingly comfortable. Its adjustable suspension is firm, as it should be in a car such as this, but it’s never harsh or uncomfortable. It dispatches bumps and imperfections in the road with one smooth motion. You feel it, it passes and then it’s over. No secondary motions or disruptions in the chassis.

Admittedly, the 19-inch wheels our tester was riding on did make it feel a touch spiky over some really rough pavement but, aside from that, it’s a really smooth ride. We just might suggest the 18-inch wheels if you do a lot of commuting. The 18-inch five-spokes just don’t look anywhere near as good as the 19-inchers.

That firmness pays dividends in the twisties, though. Of the three modes, Comfort, Auto and Dynamic, I found that Comfort was the best. In Comfort, there’s a bit of body roll, just enough to let you feel the chassis working, but it’s very controlled and allows the S5 to make easy work of fast driving. In Dynamic, it’s a bit too firm, it doesn’t round out bumps as nicely.

Our tester was running on Continental winter tires, which were sadly a bit too loud and rough. Though, they were necessary in the freezing temperatures we were in. Although, the biggest problem with them was lack of grip. Despite having Quattro all-wheel drive and an optional sport rear differential, our S5 tester was prone to a bit of understeer, simply because it was on winter tires that weren’t up to the job of hanging onto corners as well as the Audi can. Having said that, the S5 has a tremendous amount of mechanical grip of its own and is almost unflappable, regardless of tire.

Steering is also quite good. Most fast Audis are knocked for having numb, overly light steering. That’s not the case here. Sure, its steering weight is a touch light and it’s not dripping with feedback but it weights up nicely as you add steering lock and it’s very sharp and accurate. So you can place the car exactly where you want and that’s really all I ask of a car. If it does as I ask and responds to my inputs I’m happy. The S5 does just that. It’s not pure but it’s effective and it doesn’t diminish the experience.

Through twisty back roads, the Audi S5 is a fantastic companion. Turn-in is immediate and front-end grip is mega. The chassis also follows nicely, with the rear end rotating around the car more than you’d expect in a front-wheel drive-based all-wheel drive car. We suspect that has a lot to do with that optional differential, which has its own set of drive select modes, refreshingly. We kept it in Dynamic the entire time.

Beauty isn’t Perfect

While the Audi S5 is a fun, exciting and stunning companion, there are some faults, albeit minor ones. There is a touch too much understeer at the absolute limit, thanks to the engine being slung so far forward, ahead of the front axle. That’s a byproduct of Quattro all-wheel drive but it still isn’t ideal. I also don’t like how the interior ambient lighting is only white and if you want to be able to change its color, like in almost every single other premium car in its segment, you have to step up to the Prestige trim level. Also, the little paddle shifters behind the steering wheel are plastic and that comes off a bit cheap. They don’t actually feel that bad and they’re sturdy pieces but we’d like some aluminum ones in a car this expensive, please.

There’s also this weird noise that I’ve noticed in all modern Audis. After just taking off from a stop for the first time after starting the car, there’s an odd clicking noise that comes from what seems like the brake pedal. I’m not quite sure what it is and it only happens once after starting the car but it’s a bit strange. It doesn’t hinder anything in anyway but it can be a bit off-putting in a car in this segment, at this price.

Sweet Seduction

I won’t lie, I went into the test of the Audi S5 thinking it was going to be a quick, good looking coupe that lacked the substance to be a great sports car. Coming from driving BMWs often, there’s a stigma about Audis and how they aren’t proper driver’s cars. However, over the course of a week, the Audi S5 completely surprised me and seduced me. Not only me, though, everyone else who interacted with it. From its stunning good looks to its dynamite interior and its pugnacious character, the Audi S5 is easy to love. There may be sports cars that are better to drive at the limit and there may be coupes that are more premium and luxurious. But none of them combine all of those attributes into such a good looking and cohesive package like the Audi S5. After spending just a week with it, I’ve fallen victim to the S5’s Sweet Seduction.

All in all, not too bad as far as sweeteners go. The scientific literature is positive regarding erythritol, showing no adverse effects on blood sugar and demonstrating beneficial effects on vascular function and oral health. Swerve also claims that erythritol is non-allergenic and less likely to cause digestive issues than other polyol sweeteners like xylitol. Good times.

Oligosaccharides

Next down the ingredient list are oligosaccharides. These are a type of prebiotic fiber otherwise labelled as inulin, providing additional sweetness for your tastebuds and a beneficial food source for all the little good guys hanging out in your gut. The oligosaccharides found in Swerve are likely sourced from starchy root vegetables like chicory root, onions and garlic.

Once again we have an ingredient that’s natural (in origin, at least), provides a beneficial effect in the GI tract, and doesn’t adversely effect blood sugar. That being said, those folks sensitive to FODMAPs might not react well to Swerve, on account of the oligofructose found in plants like chicory root.

Natural Flavors

This is where Swerve lets the team down a bit. Under the FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations, any compound can be deemed a “natural flavor”, provided it was sourced from something natural. All well and good. But there’s very little legalities surrounding how that natural compound can be processed to form the end product (aka the natural flavor): it could be fried, distilled, squashed, roasted, acidified, discombobulated, or all of the above – just whatever takes the manufacturer’s fancy.

And by the time that natural compound makes it into your sweetener, it’s no more natural than the artificial flavors in the cheaper sweeteners further down the aisle. Can this flavor really be considered natural, then? I think not.

What’s more, Swerve has no legal obligation to disclose what that natural flavoring was actually derived from. On their site, there’s vague references to “natural flavor from citrus”, but really that doesn’t mean a heck of a lot in the grand scheme of things.

The Science On Swerve

Once again, the literature is overwhelmingly in favor of Swerve Sweetener. With regards to erythritol, high-dosage trials in rats (up to 4.6 g/kg) failed to show any chronic toxic or carcinogenic effects. Human trials at lower dosages (1 g/kg body weight—still a decent amount) didn’t reveal any gastrointestinal concerns or digestive upset, aside from higher fluid intake. That being said, there are anecdotal reports of some people personally not taking well to the stuff.

On the oligosaccharide front, it’s also reasonably smooth sailing. Oligosaccharides like those used in Swerve have been positively associated with improved gut microbial health and permeability, but there is a certain propensity for prebiotics like these to increase flatulence and have a mild laxative effect. Fair warning. Maybe it’s another reason to embrace the adage “a little goes a long way” here.

Then there’s the natural flavors. There’s not a lot I can speak to here, not being privy to the actual contents of said natural flavors. It’s worth noting, however, that while the FDA requires natural flavors to be sourced from compounds that are considered GRAS, there have been times when GRAS ingredients and products have been taken off the shelves because the FDA didn’t do their homework.

Final Thoughts

At face value, and even below the surface, there’s nothing to complain about: Swerve Sweetener really does seem like the real deal. But it’s not my favorite sweetener when I reach for one, especially when I get that strange cooling sensation on the tongue after eating something sweetened with it.

But the fact remains that most people tolerate Swerve well, and it’s won over much of the keto crowd—arguably some of the most discerning of all foodies. If you’re looking for a new sugar substitute, play around with Swerve, maybe mix it with other natural sweeteners to optimize taste, and see whether it works for you.

Without learning the proper way to jump and land—and without building a strong foundation to absorb that impact—that 10-year-old boy is at a much higher risk of injury absorbing that impact without any training under his belt. In fact, resistance training can protect against injury and help nonathletic kids develop "physical literacy" to offset their sedentary lifestyles, according to a 2017 study published in Sports Health.

So how young is too young?

Most kids are ready to start intentionally building strength by 7 or 8 years old, both experts agree. The only real concern? Whether a child is emotionally ready for training. “Kids have to be able to follow instructions to stay safe, so when they have the maturity to listen and follow instructions, they’re ready for some sort of strength program,” Faigenbaum says.

Obviously some kids aren’t quite ready at age 8, but Faigenbaum’s team does strength programs with kids as young as kindergarten. At that age, strength training looks like frog squats, bunny hops, hermit crab touches, and bear crawls across the yard or gymnasium—moves that are fun and solely intended to get kids moving in all different directions, starting to build up muscle naturally.

Another gauge: If your tyke is ready for sports, he’s certainly ready for strength training, Faigenbaum adds. If your kid is already past 8, get him or her in now. Here’s why.

Why earlier is better

“Strength training trains the muscles and the underlying neuromuscular system to enhance a child’s ability to run, jump, hop, and skip,” says Faigenbaum. “Strength matters in every sport—not just football or wrestling. Jumping, throwing, kicking—strength is a prerequisite for every movement.”

Beyond setting young athletes up for success, though, strength training has a long-term effect on a kid’s development—inactive kids become inactive teens, and then inactive adults, research also shows. And since kids today are weaker than their peers were a few decades ago, the earlier they become active, the better.

“Starting strength building in high school is 10 years too late,” Faigenbaum says. “Our interventions need to start during primary school years. It seems there is a window of opportunity early in life to develop habits and train your systems in a way that propels you into more physical success for the future.”

As with adults, the earlier you start working out, the sooner you’ll see changes. But maximizing training age is more impactful in kids because they have more adaptive processes to capitalize on, Myer says. “At 14, 15, 16 years old, you have hormonal and neuromuscular factors converging, and if you have a higher training age at this point, it’s much more advantageous for yielding higher adaptations.”

If kids can build strength pre-puberty, then they’ll have that solid foundation to explode off of when their legs and arms lengthen, center of gravity changes, and hormones settle in. “The goal is to give kids a bigger engine to power their newly bigger cars,” Myer says. Girls in particular are ripe with potential because their injury risk explodes at maturation (thanks to hormones), he adds.

Plus, while you can increase bone strength as an adult, the gains you get during childhood are much greater, Faigenbaum adds. “The data says under the age of 12 seems to be the ideal time to expose the bones of boys and girls to weight-bearing physical activity, like running, jumping, hopping, skipping, playing soccer, playing tag, for optimal health later in life.”

“Our brains continue to learn and evolve and become more connected until the age of 20, but this lead-up period is where our motor control becomes hardwired,” Myer explains.

For example: As an adult, agility work seriously taxes your nervous system—but over time, you adapt, and your reflexes become faster. When you’re a kid, that happens at a much faster rate: “We can adapt and alter after 20, but those growing years of peak neuroplasticity are really when we’re primed to take in motor loads and respond and adapt at a very high rate.”

The earlier you start, the more fine-tuned your neuromuscular system will be by 20.

“When kids are young, they all run around together. But around 6, 7, 8 years old, some start to physically change and suddenly they’re moving differently from their peers,” Myer says. Adults know not all bodies are built for speed and agility, but when kids can’t keep up with their peers, they start turning away from the things they’re not good at. That leads them down the trajectory of exercise deficit disorder, which will eventually lead to obesity, he explains.

However, if you can get those outlier kids into strength training around this time, they not only start developing their training age but also have the crucial thrill of becoming good at something. “They may be the worst at running and playing, but in strength training they can succeed, and the psychological effects of finding success compared to their peers can go a long way,” Myer adds. In fact, a 2017 study in Translational Pediatrics found in addition to reduced injury risk and increased bone strength, resistance training helped improve self-esteem in children and adolescents.

Back to those risks

When it comes to all the factors swirling around a growing body—growth plates, muscle plasticity, fluctuating hormones—strength training doesn’t affect any growth or development, both experts agree.

Of course, there are risks associated with all types of physical activity. But research shows well-devised and supervised strength training programs actually cause fewer injuries than general sports, Faigenbaum says. What’s more, the most common injuries happen to kids’ hands and feet, says a study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research—the products of, say, dropping weights or catching fingers on dumbbells. “In a well-designed program, training two to three days per week, focusing on form and progression, injuries are minimal,” Fagenbam reassures.

The one peripheral factor worth mentioning: Endless studies show anabolic steroids are particularly harmful for adolescents because they freeze the growth plates in bones, stunting height. It’s reasonable to think that starting a kid down the path of weight lifting early might drive him toward anabolic steroid use early on.

But, as Myer points out, anabolic steroid use is not about the activity (weight lifting) but instead about the environment. “If a kid is going to a bodybuilding gym, maybe they’ll be exposed to steroids as acceptable, but that’s clearly not a good environment for them to be in,” he adds.

By exposing kids to strength training via gym class, YMCA programs, or organized sports, parents can steer them away from the dark side of muscle building.

Ready to get your kid lifting?

If your child is ready to start strength training, look for an after-school, technique-based YMCA program, or ask a local PE teacher—they know about the sport and know your community, Faigenbaum suggests.

It’s especially important to get them started before sports, he adds. “You can’t go from the couch to high school cross-country team, training five days a week. I think all boys and girls should perform six weeks of conditioning before they start playing a sport.”
