Okay, this might get me some flak, but hear me out:

Shoplifting is usually okay, but make sure you know who you're shoplifting from. Big corporate entity like Target, Walmart, or McDonald's (by way of water cup soda or whatever)? Go right ahead. I worked at a McDonald's for a summer and us crew members gave no fucks. Local business like a mom-and-pop shop, that local restaurant, or one-city chain? Maybe don't (use your best reasoning, I trust you). The one "big chain" store I can personally vouch for as a place not to shoplift from is Ace Hardware. A lot of Ace Hardwares are basically local chains following standardized procedures (with exceptions). This means fairly limited stock shared between the local locations (my chain I work for has only 6, and I'm working at the newest one), so every loss is impactful. All the employees are from the area, including the owners, and nothing goes to some big, nebulous corporate HQ. Ace is also one (if not the only) of the bigger names in business that I actually respect for treating workers like human beings. When I worked at McDonald's, the crew was initially described as "getting along like a family," but in practice, it was more like that family you barely know and don't talk to much if at all (I talked to literally two of my coworkers about things other than work, and one was only a single conversation. The rest was basically water cooler conversation). Ace actually has an atmosphere of cooperation and interaction, partially because the job encourages getting to know everyone, from coworkers to customers. I genuinely enjoy working there and want to get this info out there.

Also, they don't tell you this, but lots of us employees (or at least the folks at my location) will encourage you to buy things from wherever it's the cheapest, so if we can save you money, we'll try our best to.
