House Isekai: A Realm Reborn - Part 1, Old Places and New Faces (2 of 2)

The mock battle has gone awry and a sense of dread has washed over everyone as the trainers are suddenly debilitated by the skies roaring out with a loud crack, and the cloudless day turning into a jet-black... Word Count: 4.1K

Rean and Towa slowly rose up from their headache and realized that there wasn’t any sunlight. Looking up with Kairos and Helena, they saw crackles of light begin to shine through the void that had overtaken the skies. Before anyone could say anything, the crackles of light erupted into a tear that split reality open, shooting out several people onto the ground. Although the fall looked like it should have killed its occupants upon landing, it sounded as if they were fine, other than the screams and grunts of pain.

(Towa) “Wasn’t that towards Kazuma?”

Rean nodded and turned to Kairos and Helena.

(Rean) “Get back with the rest of your class, we’ll take it from here.”

The two ran into the forest, leaving a slightly annoyed Kairos and confused Helena behind.

(Kairos) “Tch, they think they can order us around?”

(Helena) “If you’re planning to follow them, then let’s get going.”

Helena quickly rushed in behind them.

(Kairos) “What the-H-HEY! I DIDN’T SAY WE WERE GOING TO DO THAT! Ugh, for the love of-”

Kairos mumbled to himself as he ran after Helena.

Stefan had shoved several Black Eagles before the group of people landed on them, but instead he had the group on top of him. Kazuma had a student helping him walk, and couldn’t resist a scoff.

(Kazuma) “Whew, glad that wasn’t me.”

(Stefan) “U-Ugh…Am I alive…?”

He was roughly rolled to the side by a pink ponytail haired girl in a dark blue uniform, reaching for her head.

(Girl with Pink Hair) “Augh, think I landed on my back!”

Four others in similar outfits slowly helped each other up. Two were male, one with silver hair and a taller one with brown. The other two were a long white haired girl and a short green haired one.

(Girl with White Hair) “...We have landed on someone.”

(Boy with Brown Hair) “Ah shit, you’re not dead are ya?”

Stefan was helped up by the tall brown haired boy.

(Stefan) “Ow…no, just bruised. Are you guys alright?”

(Girl with Green Hair) “Us? Well, thank you for the concern but you’re the one who took the brunt of our fall.”

(Boy with Silver Hair) “Apologies about the…entrance. You are-”

Before Stefan could respond, he heard Kazuma’s voice.

(Kazuma) “Ack. Y-Yeah, I’m fine, no need to hold onto me like I’m crippled! You, kids!”

(Girl with Pink Hair) “You don’t look that much older than us-”

(Kazuma) “Whatever! You fell out of the damn sky, AND you have that same symbol Schwarzer did on your uniforms!”

(Girl with Green Hair) “Schwa-...Do you know Instructor Rean?”

The group of kids suddenly stiffened their backs while Stefan and the Black Eagles looked confused. Kazuma on the other hand just looked mildly irritated and used to it.

(Kazuma) “Psh, figures that more people that Rean knows shows u-...Wait a goddamn second-”

Kazuma suddenly did a double take at the portal they came from and realized it wasn’t closing. In fact, it looked like there were multiple portals in the sky that had yet to release its inhabitants.

(Kazuma) “...Oh shit.”

(Towa’s Voice) “Kazuma!”

(Rean’s Voice) “You alright? We heard screaming!”

Rean and Towa sidestepped the trees before stopping dead in their tracks, looking at the group of kids.

(Kazuma) “Uh, I take it these are your kids?”

(Rean) “What in the-?! W-What…Why are you…?!”

This was the most flustered Kazuma had seen Rean in a very long time. He’d be busy laughing, but the implications of why they were here alarmed him to no end. And it seemed like Towa agreed, seeing how her face grew as pale as Rean’s.

(Pink Haired Girl) “Well, at least there’s SOME familiar faces here, where are we, Instructor?!”

(Stefan) “Um, you’re in Fodlan and I take it you’re not from this world…”

(Boy with Brown Hair) “Gee, I wonder what made you come to that conclusion, dude-”

Rean glared at the boy with a very unamused look.

(Rean) “Ash.”

(Kairos’s Voice) “Stefan!”

Kairos and Helena quickly ran up to him, dusting off some of the leaves that fell on top of them.

(Helena) “Looks like you got everything under control and…more people.”

(Kazuma) “Schwarzer, you take care of…whatever this is, I’m going to check on Aigis!”

Kazuma quickly disappeared into the trees again as Rean tried to calm himself.

(Rean) “I’ll explain everything later, for now just get back to your class-”

Another deafening crack echoed throughout the black sky. Again. And again. It kept repeating as more and more of the lights split open and dropped a myriad of indistinguishable people. And monsters.

(Towa) “Oh no…”

(Kairos) “The hell is going on?!”

(Stefan) “The Blue Lions are still over on the right side! We got to get to them! Black Eagles, get back to the guards!”

Stefan rushed off unsheathing his weapons, making Helena and Kairos give chase.

(Rean) “Damn it, why don’t they listen?!”

Rean gripped his tachi as he looked to his class.

(Rean) “Class VII, stick close and do NOT wander! Let’s go!”

Everyone nodded and followed his lead as they rushed over to the Blue Lions while the Black Eagles retreated as Stefan ordered.

…

Aigis’s Persona slammed several unknown creatures to the side as she opened fire with her guns. They were large green brutes with junk weapons and armor, yet they just kept coming while they took wounds that should’ve killed them.

(Green creature) “GAHAHAHA! KRUMP ‘EM LADS!”

(Elizabeth) “Aigis, behind you!”

Aigis kept firing as she covered the retreat of the students. Before one could hit her flank, it was suddenly engulfed in bright light, and crumbled into dust.

(Aigis) “Many thanks!”

Aigis and Athena leapt back to create some distance as the creatures kept coming. Astrid skewered a smaller slime-like creature that kept hopping towards her that showed up from the other side.

(Astrid) “What the hell are these things?!”

One of the slimes was about to pounce on her before it was taken out by a knife.

(Kazuma) “Hey, kid! Check your surroundings!”

Kazuma was quickly joined by Kairos, Helena, Stefan, Rean, Towa, and Class VII. Rean and Towa didn’t hesitate to join the defense against the green brutes while the Class VII members helped any students who were faltering in falling back. The Garreg Mach students who remained attempted to give covering fire and getting rid of the slimes who were closing in on them.

(Kairos) “And none of these things are from your worlds?!”

(Aigis) “Negative. They do not match any known records!”

(Towa) “Nothing we’ve seen before, Kazuma?”

Kazuma kicked a slime like it was an empty can across the field before shouting back.

(Kazuma) “The slimes look kinda familiar, but they sure as hell aren’t from mine!”

(Helena) “Then where are they coming from?!”

…

Sitri activated the chain whip on her sword as it slashed apart several dark lanky creatures with masks in an instant. Several of the staff, Sothis, and the guards were engaged with slimes, green creatures, and these lanky ones while escorting students and noncombatants to safety. She turned behind her to realize Recette and Tear were virtually undefended. One of the green creatures realized this and charged at them. Before Sitri could help rescue them, she suddenly had to deflect a blow from yet another of the green creatures who was cackling in delight.

(Sitri) “RECETTE, TEAR!”

In what seemed like only a millisecond, a figure clad in steel leapt from the bottom of the cliff, deflected the brute’s blow and bisected it, all while shielding the two in an effortless flow. Once Recette and Tear were out of harm’s way, the figure turned back to Sitri and helped dispatch the creature she was fighting. Taking a moment to examine the situation, she finally sighed and turned to speak. It was a woman with short brown hair and a circlet with wings, fully armored in steel and purple robes. Sothis floated over to Sitri, and was surprised when it seemed like the armored woman could see her.

(Armored Woman) “Are you unharmed?”

(Sitri) “I-I am. Thank you for saving them.”

The woman nodded stoically and looked down to the ground.

(Sitri) “I don’t know who you are, but I will make sure to pay you if you can assist saving my stude-”

(Armored Woman) “No need for payment. It’s a knight’s duty to protect the weak. You’ll join me?”

Sitri turned back to her guards and the other staff.

(Yuri) “We got this, go!”

(Sothis) “Right behind you.”

The armored woman smirked.

(Armored Woman) “Try and keep up with a Knight of the Stahlritter.”

The woman leapt down the hill, landed, and dashed off into a full tilt sprint without missing a beat. Sitri and Sothis leapt down, albeit less elegantly and rushed to catch up.

…

(Pink Haired Girl) “T-THEY JUST KEEP COMING!"

The girl’s dual tonfa fired bullets into the oncoming horde of green brutes, supported by everyone who wielded a ranged weapon or spells, but they appeared no closer to thinning them out. Aigis was about to fire her hand at one of the brutes before its head exploded from a gunshot. Her brows furrowed when she realized it didn’t come from either her or the others, quickly scanning the left. Aigis's scanners saw a humanoid figure rush out from the trees, toppling some of the smaller ones as it charged towards the brutes.

A massive yellow hulk of armor came barrelling out and crushed some of the creatures who were caught unaware. Everyone stopped firing to watch the creature's quick and brutal demise at the hands of this juggernaut of a man. Though their expression suddenly turned to one of glee.

(Creature) “HAHA! IT’S DA SPACE MARINE GITZ-”

Its chest exploded into chunks as the soldier turned his rifle onto him, then onto two more in front of him in a rapid succession of disciplined shots. Turning around, everyone could get a full profile view of the man. The armor was colored yellow, though the stains of war had not been kind to its cleanliness. The shoulder pads alone were nearly the size of some of the kids, not to mention the monstrously tall height of the man himself. On his left leg sat a massive chainsaw sword and on his right was a holster for a pistol. The man gave a simple nod and spoke with startling calmness.

(Soldier in Yellow) “Civilians? Hmph, fear not, for the Emperor’s Angels will protect you from these Xenos scum.”

No one said a word and looked at each other, until Rean spoke up.

(Rean) “Any enemies of these things are friends of ours. We’re teachers and students, can you help cover our escape?”

(Soldier in Yellow) “Affirmative. The orks are drawn by battle, so I shall hold them off-”

He was suddenly hit on the left side of his shoulder pauldron by a fireball, everyone turning to the origin of the attack. The attacker was some strange and small floating creature with a mask. The tone of its voice was mocking as it danced around with a flame shield surrounding it. Before anyone could retaliate, the shield was quickly shattered by a man in a black coat with short red hair wielding a greatsword, slashing it and the creature in twain. He was joined by a smaller man in green bard’s clothing, a slightly taller woman wearing purple in what looked like a witch, and finally a blonde in a formal uniform.

(Blonde Woman) “Are you all unharmed?!”

(Elizabeth) “F-Fine, thank you, ma’am?”

(Kazuma) “Okay, is there anyone else we should know about that’s going to spring out of nowhere?!”

The yellow soldier suddenly raised his gun at Kazuma’s direction, which made everyone take up arms.

(Soldier in Yellow) “Are these your allies?”

It was Sitri running behind a woman bearing steel, which made everyone relax. Everyone except Rean, Towa, and Class VII.

(Towa) “D-Duvalie?!”

The woman in steel suddenly halted, and her stoic expression turned into confusion and annoyance.

(Duvalie) “Oh, of COURSE you lot are here!”

(Helena) “Talk later, more enemies!”

All remaining allies gathered around as they dispatched what appeared to be the last of the enemies together, the lights in the skies finally starting to dim. Every student was safely evacuated out of the area it seemed, making everyone relax only slightly.

(Astrid) “Y…Yeah! YEAH! HOW’D YOU LIKE THAT YOU BASTARDS! NEXT TIME SEND A REAL FIGHT!”

The sky split open into the biggest portal yet, and sent down a hulking monstrosity of a steel ball, crushing several of the green creatures and slimes. It quickly floated up and revealed four arms that hovered by its side, with a single glowing orange eye staring straight at them.

(Astrid) “...Crap.”

(Green Bard) “A Ruin Hunter?!”

(Boy with Silver Hair) “At least someone here knows what we’re fighting! Can we take it down?”

(Woman in Purple) “We can dear, but not easily!”

(Sitri) “Then we take it on together!”

Everyone readied themselves for combat as the low growling beeping noises the machine emitted indicated that it was prepared to kill. As if on cue, one of the arms transformed into a blade and swung down at speeds that seemed impossible for how big it was. Aigis’s eyes glowed blue as her Persona materialized to block the hit, only barely being able to withstand the hit and remain in place.

(Blonde Woman) “Diluc, Lisa, Venti!”

The man in red and woman in purple responded by running to the Hunter’s side prepared to flank. The green bard aimed for the eye with his bow before the Hunter quickly disengaged from the Persona and all four of its limbs transformed into blades.

(Diluc) “GET DOWN!”

Before either of them could attack, the three dove for the ground as the Hunter rapidly began spinning towards the group. Duvalie raised her shield while everyone else rolled or jumped out the way. It suddenly stopped in its tracks and struck once at her shield, pushing her back. The second slash missed as she leapt back, still on the defensive. It spun after Duvalie, tearing several trees from their roots and into each other as those with ranged physical weapons got into position.

(Soldier in Yellow) “FOCUS FIRE ON THE HANDS! SUPPRESSIVE FIRE!”

The soldier, the girls in pink and green hair, Aigis, and Towa all opened fire with their guns at one of its hands, but realized that they were doing nothing to it. The Hunter quickly spun around and its hands transformed into thrusters aiming upwards, until it spat out missiles towards them. Aigis’s Persona materialized in front of her and Towa, shielding them from the blasts while the soldier grabbed the other girls and tossed them out the way and took the brunt of the explosions with his armor. Both him and Athena managed to stay put despite the severity of the blast.

While the Hunter was bombarding them, several of the Class VII members alongside the Garreg Mach students and Duvalie rushed in with their blades and struck quickly enough to stagger it, making it transform into its original state as it floated back. Sitri’s sword turned into a whip as she wrapped the chain around one of the limbs, trying to yank it downwards. The single eye turned towards her as the hand suddenly jerked upwards, sending her flying.

Before she could tumble onto the floor, the blonde woman’s eyes flashed green and a massive gust of wind managed to gently catch her and have her land on her two feet. Not needing to say thanks, Sitri just nodded and saw Lisa, Sothis, Kairos, and Elizabeth all charging spells.

(Lisa) “Aim for the core!”

Lisa fired an electric bolt at the center of the Hunter while Kairos and Elizabeth casted fireballs that quickly followed it. As their spells connected, the combination of electricity and fire caused it to overload and fall to the floor. Sothis immediately followed up with a holy spell that engulfed it in a bright white light, scorching only parts of it.

(Towa) “I-Is it-?”

(Venti) “Not yet, everyone get back!”

As everyone took up new positions, Rean stood off to the side, seemingly concentrating on something else while Kazuma peeked behind a nearby tree with his knife.

(Kazuma) “Schwarzer, the hell are you doing? Shouldn’t you be out-”

(Rean) “Quiet, I’m concentrating! If Class VII and Duvalie got here then that means…”

Rean clenched his fist as he took a deep breath, beads of sweat dripping from his forehead.

(Rean) “Heed my call…VALIMAR, THE ASHEN KNIGHT!”

From the skies, the two of them heard an:

“Acknowledged!”

One of the last few rays of lights had a silver figure emerge from it, flying rapidly downwards towards Rean. It pulled out a massive tachi as Rean quickly teleported into the machine.

(Rean’s voice) “Altina, we’re rushing it! Kazuma, do your thing!”

Valimar flew forward as the silver haired girl had a small machine materialize behind her and joined Rean. Both machines slammed into its center of mass as it tried getting back up.

(Kazuma) “Psh, do my thing! I DON’T just hide behind shit-”

(Helena) “And what exactly do you do then?”

(Kazuma) “FUCKING- Gah! How did you even sneak by- Know what? Doesn’t matter! We need them to distract it, and we jump in for the kill!”

Helena simply nodded. The two of them crept around the trees as Valimar and Altina were pushed back, joining with the rest of the group. The Hunter’s limbs transformed into guns once again as it began glowing orange. Everyone with guns and spells attempted to shoot the cores, but it kept dodging out the attacks, all while aiming at the group.

(Duvalie) “Damn it, even if a few of us can dodge this next attack, some of us are gonna get killed!”

(Rean) “Get behind Valimar, everyone! I’ll take the blows and-”

(Sitri) “No!”

Sitri nodded to Sothis who outstretched both arms out. Sitri’s capelet flew in the wind as she put one arm into the air.

(Sitri) “No one’s getting killed on my watch! Goddess take you, you mechanical abomination!”

She motioned her arms sideways as Sothis closed both arms together, forming a massive circle around every single one of them just as the Hunter fired at them. Each shot deflected off into the air and dissipated, lighting up the black skies in glorious streaks of orange and red. Immediately, the soldier in yellow fired his rifle at the core, quickly followed by every single ranged user in the group, whittling it down as it was riddled with bullets, arrows, and magic.

The blonde woman and Venti’s eyes glowed green as a strong wind blew Diluc and Duvalie towards the machine, Valimar and Altina quickly following behind and striking as one, destroying its lower half.

The core was still intact as it flew backwards near the ground, sparking. As its hands tried to transform, Helena and Kazuma leapt from the trees and grabbed onto a hand each, repeatedly stabbing it. Kazuma was screaming expletives while Helena remained calm, each destroying it by stabbing critical joints.

Helena rolled off her hand and towards the group while Kazuma tumbled and landed face first into the dirt. Quickly springing back up, a small glowing energy formed in his hand.

(Kazuma) “ANYONE WHO’S GOOD AT SHIELD SHIT, COVER YOURSELVES GOOD! I’M ABOUT TO DO A MEGUMIN SPECIAL!”

Aigis, Towa, and Rean’s eyes shot wide as they instantly went to grab anyone without explaining and covered them to the best of their ability. As the Hunter tried to get up, it saw Kazuma’s hand glow even brighter than the portal it had come from.

(Kazuma) “EXPLOOOOOOOOOOSION!”

And from his hand erupted a spell of catastrophic destruction, igniting the Hunter, many of the trees, and the ground in front of him into a fiery inferno that shot up into the sky, lighting the entire void as it too exploded into shards of light, finally bringing back the blue skies that had been there previously.

Kazuma once again fell to the floor as everyone took a deep breath and slowly emerged from their circle. The skirmish was finally over.

(Stefan) “We’re…We’re alive! Hah, WE’RE ALIVE!”

(Astrid) “THANK THE GODDESS!”

Stefan and Astrid immediately hugged each other, cheering while everyone else was still trying to come down from their adrenaline rush. Sitri and Sothis fell to the ground on one knee before being helped by the blonde woman. Towa rushed over to Kazuma and wiped the dirt from his face.

(Blonde Woman) “Are you alright?”

(Sitri) “Yes, thank you for saving me earlier, miss…?”

(Blonde Woman) “Jean.”

She looked at her surroundings now that she was given a chance and realized there were more faces here she didn’t recognize.

(Jean) “I take it we’re not the only strangers here?”

Kairos and Elizabeth realized Lisa was standing awfully close to them before awkwardly stepping backwards and realizing just how many offworlders were now present.

The soldier sheathed his weapons and nodded in satisfaction, Duvalie raised an eyebrow at Class VII but sighed and put her sword and shield on her back. Class VII all high fived each other, though Altina and the silver haired boy seemed less than enthused by such an act. The Garreg Mach students seemed to have mixed reactions but at least were happy to survive the ordeal in one piece. The element wielders smiled but kept their reactions surprisingly subdued. Rean, Towa, and Aigis were by Kazuma as he cursed left and right on how a simple training exercise turned into a fight for their lives.

Sitri looked at Sothis with an excited look.

(Sothis) “No need to say it to me, I can already hear it.”

(Sitri) “First of all, I thank you for your assistance in helping evacuate the students and combating these strange monsters. I fear what would’ve happened if it weren’t for you all.”

Everyone slowly stopped talking and gave their full attention to Sitri.

(Sitri) “Today was supposed to be a test on your combat skills, but it was only through working together we were able to prevail. For my students especially, you have my utmost respect for standing your ground and fighting alongside us, despite the dangers.”

She and Sothis took a glance at those not from Fodlan and crossed her arms.

(Sitri) “For those not from here, even though you owe us nothing, you still risked your lives to save us. I’m afraid we cannot offer you passage home, at least not directly. But I believe there’s a reason.”

Suddenly, the offworlders began to look at one another nervously.

(Sitri) “You are not the first visitors here, nor will you be the last I suspect. For that reason, you will be under the protection of Garreg Mach Monastery and the Officer’s Academy during your stay, and treated as one of our own. And it is for that reason, I am choosing to reinstate our fifth house, House Isekai. You will be led by me and the four next to you.”

(Rean) “...Wait, what…?!”

(Towa) “What?!”

(Kazuma) “HUH!?”

(Aigis) “O-Oh.”

(Sitri) “As for you, my students, I would have you join them.”

The soldier turned to Duvalie, who only shrugged in response. The members of Class VII noted Rean and Towa’s expressions and were left even more confused than before. The element wielders all raised an eyebrow but could make no comment. Stefan, Astrid and Helena looked slightly surprised while Kairos and Elizabeth’s jaws dropped. Sitri watched with a slowly diminishing smile, realizing how mixed the reactions were.

(Sitri) …I thought they’d be happier about this.

(Sothis) “Do they even know what ‘isekai’ even means? Because I’m pretty sure we still don’t.”

(Aigis) “Only two of us present do.”

Sitri opened her mouth to say something, but could find no words as the awkward silence took over. Her confidence began deflating as she started to devolve back to her introverted self.

(Sitri) “Er…”

(Astrid) “Y-YEAAH! New House! WOOooo…Woo…”

Everyone remained silent as they stared at her, Astrid’s cheerful demeanor shrinking by the second. Helena and Stefan put a sympathetic hand on her shoulders while Sothis clapped her hands together.

(Sothis) “All right, it’s been a long day, we all have endless questions of who we all are, but let’s put that aside and get back to a nice soft bed, shall we?”

Everyone seemed to agree with a silent nod and followed Sitri back. Everyone except Rean, Towa, Aigis, and Kazuma.

(Rean) “...I’m starting to think Kazuma was onto something, this is not what we signed up for.”

(Towa) “W-Well, it’s a good thing I was a member of House Isekai staff before…Probably?”

(Aigis) “I have a feeling that we’ll be needing to rely on you for the coming wee-”

(Kazuma)

“WHAT IN THE FU-”

Teacher’s Helper (FE: Three Houses Short Fic)

Byleth asks his dear Shamir to help out with teaching the children of his class.

She’s…less than thrilled to.

the things you do for love

Shamir pulled up a stool and sat down next to Catherine, throwing out a gold coin onto the counter.

“Ale, half ice please.” Shamir said, sighing.

“Jeez, had a fight with Byleth?”

She shook her head, turning to Catherine.

“Nothing like that. Byleth asked me to help teach the class tomorrow.”

Catherine almost dropped her drink, then laughed it off thinking she was joking. Shamir wasn’t smiling.

“…Oh, you’re serious? Well crap, that’s gonna be fun.”

Shamir and Catherine joined Byleth’s class as overseers a while back. Overtime they saw the class extend from the Black Eagles class to incorporating most of the Blue Lions and at least one girl from the Golden Deer. In other words, it was a very packed class. It’s no wonder Byleth needed help with it.

“So on that note, what are you doing here? Don’t think you should be hungover when you’re teaching his kids.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m just…kinda nervous is all.”

Shamir looked off to the side, slightly embarrassed that she admitted that.

“Hah, I’d be too, ya know! Byleth treats them as if they were his children! On that note, this’ll be good experience for you too! When you two have-”

Shamir punched Catherine in the arm, hard.

“Ack, sheesh! It’s a joke!”

“Ugh, what am I going to do…?”

She put her hands on her face, mumbling as she took a sip from her drink.

“Come on, this isn’t like you! How many times have we fought with them at this point? I’m sure you’ll do fine teaching!”

“I’m…not great with people, much less kids. You know that by now.”

“Tell ya what, I’ll do you a solid and help you out as well. How’s that sound?”

“…I’d appreciate that.”

Catherine patted Shamir on the back and went back to her drink.

“Get some sleep, teach! You’re gonna need it!”

She grunted and left the bar.

Tomorrow was going to be a long day.

The Next Morning…

The students began pouring in as Shamir awkwardly made sure her clothing was fine and nothing stood too out of place.

“Hey, you alright?” Byleth asked as he was getting a paper of everyone’s name out.

“Y-Yeah…”

Byleth pecked her on the cheek smiling.

“You’ll do fine. Just try to relax.”

Shamir blushed for a moment trying not to be too visibly shocked by his smile.

(Dorothea) “Hey…why’s Shamir at the head of the class?”

Some of the students took notice and talked to each other about what might be happening.

(Sylvain) “Hey, they might be getting engaged!”

(Felix) “I seriously doubt the Professor would be too childish to announce that during class…”

(Caspar) “I dunno, he’s done weirder things before.”

Catherine took a seat near the front, a grin overtaking her face as she waved to Shamir who facepalmed.

(Bernadetta) “I-I’m afraid to even ask what’s going on…”

(Ashe) “Come on, Bernie! I’m sure it’ll be alright!”

Byleth loudly cleared his throat once the bell rang, and he had everyone’s attention.

“Today’s lecture is going to have to be split into two today, seeing how complicated the task would be if it were only me giving it. So, half the class is going with Shamir, while I’ll be teaching the rest. The people going with Shamir will be:

Catherine, Sylvain, Petra, Ashe, Bernadetta, Caspar, Mercedes, Ferdinand, and Marianne.

Please split off to the side of the room with your group, and we’ll begin today’s lecture. Today will be the only time the class will be split like this.

The students gathered over to Shamir’s side of the room and she cleared her throat.

‘Alright…how hard can this be?’ She thought to herself.

“Alright, so here’s the battlefield and the type of infantry the enemy platoon has. What’s the best way to approach this?” She asked as she pointed to a chalkboard.

(Mercedes) “You’d approach from the forest using our reserve of spear fighters, right?”

(Shamir) “No, they’d get slaughtered. Lances are weak to axe units.”

(Caspar) “Er…no offense miss Shamir, but how does that make any sense?”

(Shamir) “I…Huh.”

She honestly didn’t know about that. That was one of the first things she learned as a mercenary. That fact never stood quite right to her either.

How did swords beat axes, lances beat swords, and axes beat lances?

She remained silent for a moment before carrying on.

(Caspar) “She didn’t answer my question…”

“Ashe, as a sniper how would you go about taking out a foe in a fortress wearing heavy plate armor. Assume no friendly reinforcements would come in time to help. How do you occupy the fort before the enemy regroup?”

(Ashe) “Simple ma’am. Crit them so hard they explode.”

“…What?”

(Catherine) “Um, surely you’ve noticed right? How sometimes your bow and arrows just one shot a general?”

“…I suppose that’s correct.”

That was another thing she never understood. It would explain that one time she saw a villager with a stick somehow kill an enemy bandit just by slapping him hard.

“Ah, there’s your problem. Sorry to say, but that would’ve gotten your unit killed.”

(Marianne) “I-I see…”

She looked extremely troubled by the thought of that, which made Shamir flinch by her sheer depression.

She awkwardly walked over to Byleth and told him about the situation.

“…So she got sad is what you’re saying?”

“Yeah, sorry about that-”

Byleth kissed her on the lips and sighed.

“No worries, I can fix this. SOTHIS!”

“…W-Wha-”

[Ugh, are you seriously making me do this, Byleth?]

[Whatever…]

“Ah, there’s your proble-”

Byleth stepped in, tapping Shamir on the shoulder.

“You can go ahead and take a break, I got this for now, my side has been pretty quiet.”

“O-Oh alright.”

She took a deep breath as she walked outside the class to get a breath of fresh air. Catherine followed her out as Byleth was carefully explaining the mistakes to Marianne.

“It’s only been an hour and I’m already losing my mind…”

“That’s quitter talk! I think you’re doing a fine job, Shamir!”

“I appreciate it, Catherine but I don’t know how to properly talk to those kids. I think Byleth stopped me from doing so cause I might hurt someone’s feelings at this point.”

“That’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think?”

“Hmph.”

“Come on, it’s only a few more hours you have to deal with, I believe in you and so does Byleth!”

“At least that makes two of you…”

Few Hours later…

Classes had finally ended after what seemed like an eternity. Byleth stood confidently waving some students off. Meanwhile Shamir sat in Byleth’s chair and faceplanted onto the desk.

“S-Shamir? Are you okay?”

Catherine walked up and laughed heartily.

“She’ll be fine after a few drinks!”

“Ugh…”

Byleth smilled and gently held her hand.

“You did great today, Shamir. Thanks for the help.”

She got up and kissed him, rolling her eyes after.

“I…won’t be doing that again. That was just for you.”

Byleth hugged her, which made Shamir go dead quiet while Catherine watched the two with a smile.

“Come on, why don’t we enjoy ourselves for a little bit, it’ll be my treat for helping out!” Byleth said, putting away his papers.

“Come on you two, we’re drinking proper tonight!” Catherine shouted, wrapping her arms around both of them.

“I’m uh…underage…I think?” Byleth said.

“Like hell you are! You’re…actually what are you?”

Shamir raised an eyebrow and looked at Byleth as well.

“Yeah, you never told me that too. You certainly don’t look much older than the kids but…”

“Bah, let’s say you can! No one’s gonna question! Come on, love birds!”

She went ahead of them and Byleth awkwardly followed along, leaving Shamir behind smiling to herself.

“…Maybe kids won’t be so bad now that I had firsthand experience with em…Heh, that’s a fun thought.”

She joined in with the two, and they all went to drink out in town.
