MY RECENT READS ( April - August 2023 ) 📚

a mix of manhua/manhwa/danmei novels. i’ve also been on an omegaverse binge so you’ll see a couple of those on here. this is my way of documenting what i’ve read and sharing it to anyone who is probably looking for their next read.

I have linked the actual source of where i read them so you can look up the summary & reviews and see if it’s something you like. Please mind the tags and warnings too. ^^

Limited Run ( Seasons 1 & 2 ) - sometimes i’m just in the mood for some toxic relationship with good smut and this hits the spot. tho the MC (Yeon-Oh) is really put in an ugly situation, and really just wants to have a better life and escape. It’s not his fault. The power imbalance is definitely there and like 99.9% of people reading it is there for the smut.

Love Shuttle ( Seasons 1-3 ) - I am very late to this story cause when I started reading this was always at the top of people’s rec lists — especially for omegaverse and now i know why. I love a younger alpha x older omega dynamic so I’m happy with that then add in the enemies to lovers trope. The characters are likable and the story progresses well. Usually for omegaverse, there’s always some angst going on but this felt enjoyable to me. Totally a good read.

Omega Complex ( Completed ) - I AM ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH THIS STORY. I have read it multiple times and it’s marked as completed, but the extras are not. If I were to pick my ideal omegaverse story and art it would be this. Again. Older Omega x Younger Alpha. This one is they started as childhood friends who became estranged because of “circumstances” and met up again in college. The school setting itself and supporting characters are well done too. Most stories have fleshed out supporting characters only if they will be a second couple or something, but this does not use that ploy.

There are misunderstandings but i’m okay with that. I know people are stupid and bad at communication in real life so i don’t really get readers who complain about it. Maybe if it’s too much or doesn’t serve a purpose. It’s necessary in this one tho.

THE SMUT IS GORGEOUS. No. Really. How can you describe smut as gorgeous? Well. Read it and you will find out. 👀

BUT THE BEST THING IS I AM INVESTED WITH THE PAIRING. I love them so much. 😭😭😭 from childhood friends to going to school together and all + grown ups.

Their aesthetic also kinda reminds me of the GG & WYB. so yeah.

Cheeky Habits of my Rabbits - what happens when you combine absolute cuteness and smut? This. I love it. It shouldn’t work, the premise is weird, but it’s a great read! hilarious too. Neungso is the most precious bunny!!!!

The Pizza Delivery Man & the Golden Palace ( on Hiatus ) - How do I even begin to describe this without foaming in the mouth. I wish the hiatus will be over and we will know more and see how the story progresses. It looks like a simple premise, MC is a pizza delivery guy who is struggling and he forms a relationship with a rich regular from the “golden palace”. BUT NOOOO. The writing is special. The way the ML’s struggle with his anxiety/trauma and how MC’s simple kindness helped him is so romantic.

Especially the scene when they first met in the rain and the MC offered his umbrella. You never know what people are going through, so it’s best to be kind. It was such a small gesture but it changed both of their lives.

It’s a story of how love can heal. 😌

Plus the MC — Woo Won is one of my favorite leads ever. He is so gentle and kind even if the world is treating him badly, he still makes a conscious decision to be good. He deserves all the love and success! ML ( Seo-An) better spoil him well! 😤

Their problems don’t magically disappear, it’s just easier to exist because you have someone standing beside you. 🤍🤍🤍

The New Recruit ( completed ) - a solid office romance. if you’re into that then pick this up! there’s no toxic power imbalance going on or abuse. I like how MC is someone who started his career a bit late, so he is older than his peers and still a newbie. A perfect read over the weekend.

Mr. Y & Mr. J - I can’t find the link to the completed version I read so sorry for that. Anyway, this one is with theme of “regression” is I think the right time. Where the MC dies and lives again years prior. So they get a second chance at life. The setting is also entertainment industry which i personally enjoy so there was no way i won’t like it.

Salad Days ( Season 1 ) - Something I AM VERY LATE to. I think everyone and their mom have read this so I won’t go into details. I loved the first season and will definitely go back to finish the rest. The pairing is so OTP material 💟

The side characters in the MC’s life, his friends, are so precious too!

Dawn of the Dragon ( Season 1 ) - Fantasy / Smut. That’s all I can remember. What I really wanna know tho is the backstory of the Dragon and who was his mate from the past. I have a feeling the MC is some sort of reincarnation of that person.

Raising Beta (completed) - A very short read. It’s fucked up. LOL. Basically the MC is a beta and the ML who is obsessed with him turns him into an Omega. not only that, he did a lot of other things all in the name of “love” and as a reader you are there to watch it and you can’t do anything to help the MC. It’s definitely an experience to read this. It reminds me of something Kai Bi Qiu might write so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it more than i should. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Hyacinth (completed) - Awwww this one is sweet and makes me all somft. I have re-read this too cause it’s pretty short and the art is beautiful. The MC’s focus on how many meals he has shared with ML was a nice addition and added to the romance.

Plus their little family of three is so cute! XIAO YI IS THE BEST KID. 🥹🥹🥹

How to snag an Alpha ( Completed ) - All I can say is that it’s super funny and the MC is definitely a character. I got so much secondhand embarrassment from the shit he pulls but he ended up getting the Alpha so i think it’s worth it! 😂

Sweet not Sugar ( Season 1 ) - I found this when searching for “green flag” alphas and well this satisfied that. I love the MC here so i’m happy that he gets to be with someone who doesn’t treat him like trash. The MC is at a point in his life where he thinks everyone is out to abuse him in some way so meeting ML unsettles him.

LEE DAN! You deserve to be loved! No matter what happened to you in the past 🥹🥹🥹

December ( Season 1 ) - This is one that I actively check to see if it’s updated cause I’m so invested with the pairing. It should be the usual omegaverse trope but add in the backstory, somehow makes it special. They both meet years ago and MC who is an omega “awakened” the ML into being an Alpha. ML then looks for this mystery person and when he finds him, he will do everything to keep him.

I’m doing a very bad summary i know, i promise it’s not boring. There are other issues discussed in the story, like how horrible omegas are treated. I looooove it when the Alpha goes feral and violent in certain moments too but when it comes to his Omega he is somft.

Their library dates too!!!! 😍😍😍😍

Who’s baby is it? ( Ongoing 200 + chapters ) - My comfort read! I swear. The plot was initially straightforward then it went in a bizarre direction but i still like it. It’s still not finished even with all the chapters and I imagine they can still stretch it to last forever 😂😂😂

My fave would definitely be the children! Rourou!!!! I initially picked this up cause I wanted a story with a cute kid. and i got what i wanted.

My Delicious Dream Boy ( Completed ) - The kind of supernatural read that still manages to be fun and light. The MC here is funny without even trying. He only wants to have friends and experience “college life” after years of having to stay at home because of his sickness. The plot could have easily gone dark but it focused more on relationships and the pairing’s growth as individuals — which was so much better for me. Definitely a favorite and reread material.

Affectionately ( Completed ) - This could have been more fleshed out cause there is more story to tell but what can i do.. It is what it is…

It features cute animals cause the MC is supposedly gifted in interacting with them and the ML is the complete opposite. They also work at a cafe together. I chose to read this cause I wanted fluff and it did not disappoint.

My favorite glasses holder ( Completed ) - the MC and his love for men with glasses 😂😂😂 ML is a grumpy kitty and works so well with MC’s bright personality. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as i do. After this, I have craved for more modern setting stories.

Deer Fei Fei - an adorable story of the MC who is in the entertainment industry and his “senior” who he idolizes. if you are into a fanboy getting his idol trope they give it a try. It’s also really short with 32 chapters only 💕

Transmigrated and forced to do Business - my guilty pleasure is when the MC transmigrates in the book where they are supposed to be the villain but they don’t want that. So they do everything the can to be on the good side of the book’s protagonist and well… we all know what happens after.

Have you ever met such a cold author? - Fanboy reader who writes fanfics meets his favorite author. That’s it. I was sold with the premise and it did deliver. ☺️

Bu Wang - I started the Manhua and wanted more so I MTL-d it over at gonzicp so I don’t have the proper english translation. I was just craving for a merman type of story and this popped up. It was nice! How the ML became so devoted to him and chased MC when he left AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

Stars run to him - I have to take Knoxt ( website ) for this cause i swear i was only browsing completed novels and I randomly clicked on this. It’s what i love about Knoxt, there are translated works there that are not as popular. Absolute gems that deserve more audience.

This is a perfect example. 💕

DON’T LET THE SUMMARY FOOL YOU. I enjoy myself some fake dating for sure, but this is so much more than that. Especially that clue in there : “Gu Zhongyi has loved him for many years…” I don’t think I’ve ever read something like this and that’s why it stuck with me. It would have been so confusing but it was written very well and seeing it all unfold is a treat. Definitely a classic.

It seems there is light - Such a pure story. I swear. A great story about first love and two people who care for each other. It may be boring to some, depending on the headspace you’re in, but please give it a try.

because as someone who gets upset but can’t effectively voice their frustrations, I get serotonin from watching a scrunkly little green man be stinky and cause a scene

First and foremost, how did he go from being just a brat to straight up submissive and breed-able bratty bottom?

No, like, seriously. These are two completely different individuals??? One is just a brat, and the other is a breed-able bratty bottom, and I’ll be honest here, it took me such a long time to fully appreciate the donghua design because I was so used to STARember’s design. And yes, I threw a fit to every single person I know about how vastly different his design is, I can show you the receipt.

Since his height isn’t listed… (as far as I’m aware), I’m convinced that he’s the shortest adult character in the series (yes, shorter than Ling Wen… who is TALLER than Xie Lian??????) Thus, if he were to be a dog, I can imagine him as a chihuahua. And everyone around him would be like “awww is the tiny little pookie angry???” and just make fun of him, because that’s what people do to angry Chihuahuas for some reason.

This is him throwing a fit at Pei Ming (yes, PM is a German Shepherd in my mind. Yes, I will make videos on this.)

That one specific plot-point in the novel where HC and XL are in a shack/inn and QI RONG WAS THE COOK??? Like WHAT?? Chef Boyardee who? I only know Chef Qi Rong

He’s also unfortunately selectively intelligent??? Which actually makes sense since he did grow up as a part of the royal family. And I feel like a lot of people forget that. But at the same time, even without the royal background, I feel like he has a certain sense of intelligence…. that comes from… god knows where???? And that’s kinda scary to think about, because imagine if he actually put his full thinking cap on 😭😭

Bro just straight up Out-Gay-ed Shi Qingxuan, which… I didn’t even know was possible. Like, when he flicked his wrist, I almost expected him to go: ✨✨SLAYYYY 💅✨✨

Please don’t forget the “waist snatched, tits out” potential with this man. Donghua version. Manhua version would never.

Did I talk about “DOG HUA CHENG” and “DOG FUCKED XIE LIAN” already? Because like… despite the nasty implications, he was definitely onto something. He probably just didn’t realize to what extent 😭

I just want an official plush of this man so that I can use him as a soccer ball when it’s pouring outside and kick him around into puddles and mud and… yeah

I could have sworn I had more thoughts of him but I can’t remember now so maybe there will be a part two 🤔🤔

攀 - climb; clamber; crab; cling to; hold onto; seek connections in high places

树 - tree; plant (verb); set up; establish; uphold

Alternative translations:

Climbing trees is not allowed in the Cloud Recesses.

I went for the straightforward translation with this one, and could not resist choosing the wording "tree-climbing" as it is (in English) said to also refer to short women people having sexual preference for very tall male partners... so, No climbing the Twin Jades! (says Uncle Qiren) 😄.

I was also wondering, given the other meanings of 攀 and 树 if this rule should actually have been translated more "figuratively" as "To seek to establish connections (with people) in high places is not allowed in the Cloud Recesses", as forbidding social climbing? But my trusty translation software tells me "social climbing" is 社会攀登 (shèhuì pāndēng), so perhaps the tree-climbing interpretation (with or without the Twin Jades 😁) is right, even if a rule against climbing trees sounds oddly specific (then again, the Lan...)?

Any mistakes in the translations or in the characters are mine, and if you spot any, please let me know 🙂.

Ok, that particular tree-climbing (and jumping) scene took place in Lotus Pier, not Cloud Recesses, but it is pretty clear someone has never climbed a tree just for fun 😕.

And yeah, as this took place during the Unfathomable Redhead Era of the manhua, I had to fix the colouring a bit, because *repeat after me* Lan. Wangji. has. ink. black. hair. Canonically. (Oh, how I miss the original manhua art style 😭!)

Hello! I just wanted to come by and say that you are an fantastic writer and inspiration in my writing, both personal and academic. Your depictions of characters and settings are ✨flawless✨. Your word choice is so unique and creatively fits every scenario. Even the minute details that one would not think necessary in a scene, you illustrates so perfectly and it add another layer of emotion and realism that makes the reader feel like they’re standing there watching your story unfold in real life.

It’s taken a lot of of self-motivation over several years, but after coming across your writing it has inspired me to write my own story. 2. The Top Couple Is a Bit Sweet

Manhua, shoujo but walks the line of josei a little, modern, romcom drama, showbiz, another contract relationship 🤩, more insane art with a hot couple, I haven’t read very far but the vibes and chemistry are off the charts tbh, he totally fell first, power couple frfr

3. I Stan The Prince

Manwha, shoujo, historical but lots of modern references, romcomfan, TOOTH ROTTING SWEETNESS, ML has actual mfing emotions and shows them, she fell first he fell harder ordeal, original work so no novel, not as cliche as you may think, MORE INSANE ART, one of my top faves of all time omg, this one is for the kpoppies

Season 1 complete, season 2 just picked up after a two year hiatus 🥹

4. The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague

Manga, josei, modernc slice-of-life, supernatural office romcom, SO WHOLESOME, lot of memes in this one, ML is sososo sweet, FL is too cool, japanese lore is what makes this supernatural, side couples are equally amazing, just super cute light read

5. Run, Meil

Manwha, shoujo, isekai, historical, romcom, memes are abundant here too, girl gang is so comedic, ML is sweet, FL isn’t dumb and is actually smart nor does she care about original storyline, og!fl is a cutie too and gets her own happy ending, miscommunications are mild and get spoken through, I’m super picky about shoujos but I love this one

6. The Girl and The Geek

Manhwa, josei but cute like a shoujo, modern, romcom, slide of life, MAJOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, super sweet and natural love, they make each other better 🥹🥹🥹, their families can be annoying, her family I can’t really forgive, but his family is only initially overbearing but you def warm up to them, humble rich CEO dude, miscommunications but their handled pretty well and actually does something for the plot, ugh the story is so good

7. You Are My Desire (aka Daydreaming About Me)

Manhua, josei, romcom drama, starts off in high school but later half is in college, first loves, some mature topics in relation to family problems, idek what to say but god I just love them sfm and I think the artist is from the same studio as the Hidden Love artist, the novel is sauuuuur good, comic does it justice but I recommend the novel even more

bring the love: I hate how some people dropped this because they didn't like the art style but this literally has to be one of the best romances I've ever read. the characters are mature and they communicate really well. they touch upon a lot of social topics that aren't usually talked about in the historical genre. green flags all around.

do you know anything about tpo kageyama-kun?!: plugging a kagehina dj because I squealed when I read this and literally reread it over and over bc of how cute it was

i saw your post about the manhua. i interpreted it as-- he's dreaming there, about the sinkhole. not a realistic portrayal of what he was actually wearing at the time ladjslkjsd

I don't understand such choice because he was there to assist, not just a dream. And to think the first manhua artist drew him in armor and received a lot of stupid critics because Lanzhou wasn’t "pretty enough" (??? Forgive an artist who tries to draw realistic painful facial expressions and not just the character being a doll 😭), well who knows if this is just a coincidence

MDZS manhua chap 232: Welp, looks like officially, WangXian's first papapa happened OFF SCREEN, but we do get the knives af aftermath 😭😭😭

(covers novel chaps 95-96; til now, only adapted in audio drama S3Ep12)

Yep, the chapter just starts like this 😂. So no bathtub to bed papapa scene it seems. Haven't seen any leaks of it either. I guess this is a clever way to naturally bypass that scene without making it too obvious that it's due to censorship. But hey! At least they still absolutely acknowledged that WangXian slept together. I was kinda expecting a more severe edit tbh. Thankful they didn't just jump to Guanyin Temple.

Interestingly enough, in the book, Wei Ying's words of thanks was more lengthy: "In these two lives, you've helped me a lot. I know you're... really nice to me. You're really great! Apart from thank you, I don't know what else to say to you... Anyways, towards you, I feel... I feel...." --from chap 95, translated by Exiled Rebels. In this chap of the manhua, Wei Ying only THOUGHT most of that...what came out was only his thank you. Either way, end result was still the same...

Lan Zhan still misunderstood and thought Wei Ying slept with him just out of gratitude so he shoves him away. 😢

He's so wrought with emotion he's shaking. 😢😢😢

More knives: Wei Ying feeling so ashamed, thinking that he took advantage of Hanguang-jun who was just being platonically nice, that Lan Zhan doesn't like him THAT way. 😭

Seeing Wei Ying tremble like that, Lan Zhan wanted to reach out to help him put on his clothes....

This whole scene always makes my heart clench up. First time I read it in the book I actually cried cuz I just felt so bad for Wei Ying...he just felt so ashamed...when there was absolutely no reason for him to be. Ugh. Honestly I feel bad for both of them. Misunderstandings suck ass.

The chapter ends with Wei Ying just dismissing their papapa as nothing, pretty much just two bros helping each other out 😂. I laugh but ofc the knife is twisted further into Lan Zhan's heart.

**the last line of what Wei Ying was saying should be "You don't need to touch me" so it's actually more heart-aching than what I have there. I mixed up the meaning of two Chinese characters in my head (I mistook 用 for 有's meaning)...which makes quite a difference. 😅 I really could kick myself for that cuz it's such a dumb mistake. Sorry your hearts didn't hurt more, Wei Ying definitely deserved more of your heartaches.

i don't read that much manhwas in the first place, and i don't think i've actually ever read a sapphic one unfortunately.

i'm not sure if you were asking for your throne-like recs or just sapphic recs in general. like, i personally really love fantasy/etc. and plot-focused stories where the romance is just secondary. and i've noticed that those are extremely hard to find with wlw couples... i usually see a lot more contemporary romances.

BUT i did a bit of research, and found these 2 titles!

her tale of shim chong

ghosts of greywoods

both seem to be historical dramas.

however, i have not read them (although i now plan to) so i really can't give my opinion on them, or give you content warnings (they might have nsfw content for all i know so be careful if you don’t want that!)

i hate to give recs blindly like that so please make sure to look these things up!

a manhua i also see recommended a lot is tamen de gushi — i believe this one is a contemporary romance but same thing goes for what i said earlier since i haven't read it yet

to compensate for the lack of manhwas, here are some sapphic webtoons i've read, if you're interested!

the one i want to mainly mention is nevermore

it's a new webtoon so only 5 chapters are out for now, but it might easily be a new favorite of mine. it's a spooky gothic romance?? with paranormal elements?? references to edgar allan poe????? i love it so so much so far and i really recommend it.

the characters basically get stuck in this place after they die, where they get enrolled in "nevermore academy" — if they pass, they get a 2nd chance at life. also spectres. not sure how this is going to come into play but i'm really invested already.

the other webtoons listed here are more lighthearted! but they're all really good:

always human (romance with a futuristic scifi setting)

high class homos (comedy + royalty + a lot of lgbtq rep with both wlw and mlm romance)

dazzle me (contemporary romance) - on canvas

what's a soulmate (contemporary romance) - on canvas

there is also savior (a manhwa on webtoon) — i hesitated adding this one because it is NOT a romance and i do not want to class it as one.

it's a supernatural fantasy? the mc is a vampire and the relationship between the girls is very much toxic / obsessive.

if you like thrillers though, and read it as one, it's really interesting in terms of plot and characters, so i thought i'd mention it. (especially since your throne is pretty dark so that might be something you enjoy)

cw: blood, violence, kidnapping, domestic abuse (it's all i can think of rn but webtoon usually has cws when needed at the top of the chapter)

and then here are a few webtoons that are on my list which i have NOT read yet. so again, no idea how good they are/etc. all of the ones after the first 2 are on canvas.

in chp 58, there’s this subtletly of gojo’s insecurity,, which is kind of obvious when u rly squint lol but again,, this is another mistranslation 😐 (1)

a panel of gojou training megumi which goes :

what gojou is actually asking in the panel is 「そんなに嫌？僕に頼るの？」－ "is it that bad to rely on me?" ,, the raw specifically used tayoru “頼る” 🥴

i think the whole point of 'fostering the next generation of strong jujutsu sorcerers' stems from this insecurity or rather his inner (and very well hidden) knowledge that he isn't invincible and he can't be relied on indefinitely

that's what bothers me about the fanon’s misconception that gojou has a 'god complex' the idea that gojou is the superior shaman doesn't come from him but from everyone else in his world,, it's a burden that was placed on him he's just trying to deal with it

but sometimes ur disinterest or indifference doesn't make u a better, bigger person ,,, gojou isn't necessarily a better person than geto just bc he didn't stray off the path. his indifference speaks volumes,, but yes he’s trying ig

the problem with translated things is that,, u have no idea if ur actually reading the manga/ manhuas/ webnovels/ etc or if ur reading what the translator interpreted with their personal bias

yes, morally grey/ ambiguos characters are so sexc to read but,, i dont even want to know if i have crossed path with those kind of ppl irl, in this life or the next one (i did twice actually, and hope that there wont be a third time💀) ,, getting into convos where it leads into someone questioning humans’ rights (to live) get my gears running on how to ghost them right away like HUHH IKFYL, HOW DO U ARRIVE TO SUCH CONCLUSIONS,,, im both fascinated and wary of human’s thought process

on an unrelated note,, YES!!! VNC IS GETTING ANIMATED AND BLUE PERIOD TOO ,, im not going to start with pandora hearts 🥴

also if ur going to start tog, i think it will be better once it’s out of hiatus (it’s almost been a year now) 😔 the story is actually getting real good,, this is one of the series i cant even talk abt bc it will be very biased ,, I JUST RLY LOVE HOW THE FEMALE CHARACTERS ARE WRITTEN , STRONG WOMEN GO BRRR

all of them are empowering but it doesn't mean that these women shld lose the sense of femininity (there’s more than enough series i went thru where the author turned the powerful women into sth akin with “not-like-the-other-girls” and reeks of sth,, finding out SIU (tog’s creator) is a man was so surprising like am i actually seeing this right?)

,, the story line is one hell of a slowburn but everyone is connected even the npc-ish turns out to have their hand dipped in the bigger picture not to mention the lore - 🐱 (2)

forgot to add this but i’m curious if part of megumi’s exasperation towards gojou is bc he cant be fit into the “black or white” box since gojou’s a gray character lol (3) - 🐱

i think one of gojo’s biggest flaws is that even though he knows and acknowledges that he needs strong comrades, he will always fall back on doing things solo because he’s the strongest, and that’s just the way that it’s been for so long. that is not the definition of a god complex at all lol

I’m planning on reading blue period. I’ve heard really really good things about it so im excited, especially since i finished jigokuraku yesterday. LOVED THE ENDING.

i haven’t read tog in so long!! i think I was in the part where rachel betrayed baam or smt I don’t even remember it’s been like 5 years so I can’t comment on how SIU writes women bc I’m p sure back then I was still struggling with my own occasional instances of internalized misogyny LMAO 😭 

everyone in jjk degree is gray to a degree, which I think is one of my favorite things about it. I can’t wait for this week’s chapter and what lord tengen is going to tell them....I need more information on gojo’s family/everything !!!
