The Color of Your Eyes
Solas x F!Adaar
Read on AO3
Summary: Solas can't stop thinking about the Inquisitor after the kiss in the Fade.
A/N: Based on the prompt Courtship from the @loveofdragonage event.
Tumblr media
The sun shone brightly, as the people living Skyhold slowly began to wake up.
Solas, however, had been up for quite some time. Being a dreamer, Solas much preferred the world of the Fade to the waking one, but that night in particular, he could scarcely find sleep and it was mainly the Inquisitor's fault. No matter how much he tried, almost every dream he had that night involved Asala Adaar in one way or another.
With what he had planned, catching feelings was the last thing he, or Asala, needed. It would be kinder in the long run, too, if he cut whatever was trying to happen between them now than later. The kiss had been a mistake. It was impulsive, it was a distraction and if he could…
If he could…he’d kiss her again.
It was with those thoughts in mind that he left his bed earlier than usual, making himself tea to stay awake. Deciding to stretch his legs, and enjoy the quiet of the early morning, he walked outside, enjoying the feeling of the grass on his feet.
When Solas first awoke from his slumber, the earth had been one of the few things that seemed to stay the same. The people, however…it was as if he walked in a world of tranquil. It disturbed him, to see the world he had left behind.
The world he, in a way, had created. All he wanted was to free his People from the chains of their slavers - not make them like this. Disconnected from the Fade, fearful of magic. A world he needed to undo, even if the people in it had to die.
Taking a deep breath, Solas looked around him, noticing he had walked quite a bit, finding himself in front of a large tree. He took a moment to sit under the shade of it, reflecting on his current predicament. If his plans were to succeed, he needed to focus. Trying to pursue someone such as the Inquisitor would only hinder that.
He shook his head, remembering a conversation the two shared not long after they had reached Skyhold.
“How are you feeling, now that they’ve officially named you the Inquisitor?” Solas had asked Asala.
The qunari winced. “It’s a title that I can use to do good.”
“But?”
“But…everyone keeps calling me ‘Inquisitor’. Not Asala, not even Adaar…just Inquisitor.” She sighed. “It almost feels like I’m part of the Qun.”
Asala, not the Inquisitor. The qunari mage whom he had misjudged. Once, he had thought all qunari to be the same as he had always seen - a single minded people, whose beliefs went against everything Solas stood for. And yet, through her actions, Asala had changed his mind about a few things. A task not so many had ever achieved and yet…
Solas sighed. It was as if his mind and his heart wanted different things. It would be kinder in the long run, he thought. But why couldn’t he allow himself this one moment of selfishness?
Looking down at the grass, he saw a small flower next to him. It would be unnoticeable if it wasn’t for its color - a shade of purple almost the exact color of Asala’s eyes. Almost without thinking, he gently picked the flower. As the people began to appear in his line of sight, signaling the rest of the fortress had woken up, Solas stood and made his way back inside.
Once he reached his room, he found Asala already there. She hadn’t noticed him enter, as she was looking at one of the frescoes he had recently painted.
“I am surprised to see you here so early.”
If she was startled by his presence, she did not show as she turned around and smiled at him. “Good morning to you too.” She pointed to one of the frescoes. “I didn’t know you could paint.
He walked towards her, until they stood side by side. “There are a lot of things you do not know about me.”
For a moment, he thought he might have spoken too harshly. An apology was on the tip of his tongue when Asala only smirked and said “Good.”
“Good?” He raised a brow.
“Good. It means I still have plenty of things to learn about you.”
“Oh? And what things have you learned about me, pray tell?”
Whispering, she said “Quite recently I learned you’re a better kisser than I thought.”
Solas didn’t reply, but he felt the heat on the tip of his ears. He shouldn’t be indulging in this…flirting, or whatever it was. And yet, he didn’t want the moment to end.
He turned to Asala. “There is something I wanted to show you.”
Her smile dropped for a moment. “Don’t tell me we were in the Fade this whole time again.”
Solas chuckled, shaking his head. “I wish, alas, no. You and I both are very awake.” Bringing his hand forward, he showed her the flower. “I found it outside on the grass, almost imperceptible.” He handed it to her before saying “It reminded me of you.”
Asala took the flower in her hands - it somehow looked even smaller when held by her - and studied it closely. “I had never seen one of these outside. It’s very pretty.”
“I thought so too.” Solas took a step closer. “It has the same color as your eyes.”
For a moment, her eyes widened just in the slightest as she looked at the flower again, and she smiled, just as a small shade of red appeared on her cheek.
“Thank you, Solas.” She said, and placed the flower behind her ear. For a moment, Asala leaned forward, and he thought, hoped, they’d kiss again.
But the sound of knocking and someone calling for the Inquisitor interrupted them. She grimaced before sighing and saying “I should get going.”
Before she could go, however, Solas said “Asala. There is…something else I’d like to speak to you with. When you’re free-”
“I’ll find you.” She finished the phrase and nodded. With a small smile on her face, she opened the door and left.

Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. - Robert Frost "Nothing Gold Can Stay"

not to be thirsty on main but Blackwall/Thom Rainier's post-redemption romance tarot card in Inquisition is the single hottest piece of video game artwork ever rendered.
Its so beautifully possessive. The glowing hand over his heart to me says 'I am hers', body and soul.
11/10 romance, so glad my Lavellan romanced him in my canon world state.

something something the inquisitor's hand becoming a holy symbol that people can't help but want to look at, to touch, to kiss like the rings of a king. nobles grasping at the inquisitor's wrist during the halamshiral ball, nails like claws. soldiers clasping hands with the inquisitor, hoping for just a glimpse of that holy protection to shine upon them before a battle. commoners dropping to their knees and pressing their faces against the inquisitor's palm for mercy, for protection, for vengeance. do you see it.

Change your mind
Solas/F!Adaar
Read on AO3
Summary: Asala Adaar has a few words with Solas about how he talks to Bull about the Qun.
A/N: just a little something between my inquisitor and solas before they're in a relationship. I had been tossing the idea around in my head and decided to write it down.
word count: 661
Tumblr media
Asala  didn’t know how the argument started. She had only wanted to ask some questions about the Fade, and the next thing she knew, she and Solas were arguing about the Qun.
“I am not saying you have to agree with him, but I’m only saying that maybe you don’t have to argue with Bull about the Qun every time we go out.” She pleaded. “Just…keep an open mind.”
Solas frowned “It is him who you should tell to open his mind, not me. I only wish for him to understand that the Qun-”
Asala cut him off, frustrated, as they kept talking in circles. “Look, I get what you’re doing, but who is that going to help? He grew up under the Qun, and he understands it better than either you or I ever could. You questioning him about it won’t change that fact.”
“Just because you believe things cannot change, does not mean I do.” He said, harshly. “If you do not wish to question the status quo, you are free to do so, but do not ask me of the same.”
“That is not what I am saying.”
“Then what is it?”
Asala took a deep breath, calming her nerves. “I don’t know what I am asking, but I know this. Living in this world when you look like me or Bull is hard enough as it is. Everyone thinks we’re all savage beasts.”
She sighed. “And I don’t know how he feels, if he is even bothered by these comments. But we already get enough shit as it is and maybe, not being incessantly questioned about his beliefs and how they are definitely wrong, in your opinion, is not going to make him have an easier time.”
The frown left Solas face, as he tilted his head. “I am surprised that you would offer such understanding to him, seeing as the Qun does not look fondly to those outside of it.”
Asala crossed her arms. “Maybe it’s misguided, especially when this…understanding, as you put it, is not given to me or other vashoth.” She looked away, thinking out loud. “Because I really shouldn’t, right? I mean, the first time I talked to Bull here, he made a point of telling me we were not the same, when I was just trying to find a connection. Because me, my parents and my brother, and my friends, we’ll always be hunted down because we chose not to follow the Qun. We’ll never belong to the only other group of people who look like us.”
She looked at Solas, and he remained silent, his expression neutral as he listened. Asala continued rambling. “Understanding is all I can offer, even to those who don’t deserve it, because then, I will be just like them. Close minded and my efforts will be for nothing. I can’t change Bull’s mind, or every Ben-Hassrath’s mind by debating them, but I can hope that by listening, and by acting against what they believe of me, they could maybe…”
Asala shook her head, uncrossing her arms. “But perhaps it doesn’t matter, right? Because no matter how many people I help, I’ll still get called oxman behind my back, and people will never change their minds about the qunari.” She rubbed her face. “I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore. Keep doing what you want, I guess. I’ll go see if Cassandra needs anything.”
She turned around, marching to where the Seeker usually was, when a hand touched her wrist. “You’re wrong.”
Asala sighed as she looked at him, not ready for another debate. “Solas-”
“You have changed minds. At the very least, one. Don’t think your actions are for naught.” He told her. “Our conversation was…enlightening. I will take what you said into consideration.”
“I…thank you, Solas.” He gave her a tight nod before walking away. She gave herself a small smile before shaking her head and going to find Cassandra.
