Mit der Erschießung des republikanischen Parlamentsabgeordneten der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung nach dem

Oktoberaufstand in Wien wird zugleich auch die parlamentarische Immunität Blums durch die Militärführung im Dienst des österreichischen Kaiserhofs gebrochen. Die Niederschlagung des Wiener Oktoberaufstands und die Hinrichtung Blums gilt als offene Kampfansage der herrschenden Vertreter einer reaktionär -

restaurativen politischen Ordnung gegen das aus der bürgerlichen Märzrevolution in den Staaten des Deutschen Bundes hervorgegangene erste demokratisch gewählte gesamtdeutsche Parlament. In den nachfolgenden, regional teilweise bürgerkriegsähnlichen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Verfechtern einer sozialistischen Räterepublik und denen einer pluralistisch-parlamentarischen Demokratie unterliegen die Anhänger des Rätemodells. Liebknecht selbst wird zwei Monate später zusammen mit Rosa Luxemburg am 15. Januar von reaktionären Freikorps ermordet. In der weiteren Folge wird im August 1919 das als

Richard Henry Stevens und Sigismund Payne Best , im niederländischen Venlo von einem SS-Sonderkommando unter Alfred Naujocks entführt, nachdem sich deutsche Geheimagenten unter Walter Schellenberg für Widerstandskämpfer ausgegeben haben. Der Venlo-Zwischenfall macht große Teile des britischen Spionagenetzes in Europa praktisch wertlos und liefert Hitler im Mai 1940 einen Vorwand für den Einmarsch in den Niederlanden.

Bundesverfassungsgericht urteilt, dass in Deutschland lebende Österreicher, die mit dem „Anschluss“ 1938 die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft bekamen, diese mit der

friedlichen Revolution in der DDR , dem am 3. Oktober 1990 mit dem Beitritt der DDR zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland die

Los documentos desclasificados de la inteligencia estadounidense causaron un escándalo mundial hace pocos años. Si bien la atención se centró en los documentos históricos más recientes, lo cierto es que en dichos archivos desclasificados también se pudo encontrar importante información de nuestro pasado histórico. Los grupos pro nazi fueron muy influyentes en Venezuela, a pesar de haber sido más pequeños que en otros países de la región. La inteligencia estadounidense sabía que la influencia nazi no se podía subestimar por el relativo pequeño tamaño de la comunidad, visto que esta tenia un enorme poder en el sistema económico venezolano.

Según los archivos desclasificados, la Bayer fue el brazo del nazismo en América Latina. Walter Hadamovsky fue el gerente de la empresa y el jefe de los intereses del Partido Nazi (Partido Nacionalsocialista Obrero Alemán) en Venezuela. Las actividades de Hadamovsky fueron vigiladas por el doctor Manuel Antonio Pulido, ex director de la Policía Nacional en Venezuela. A raíz de esta situación, Hadamovsky se vio obligado a retirarse a la periferia. Sus aliados en el país eran Hans Larsen, Hans Zittlosen, Theodor Schanz, Adolf Gathmann, Paul Waldeck, Theodoro Valentiner y Kurzboek Hager, entre muchos otros.

Algunos nombres de ciudadanos y empresas sancionadas por el gobierno de Estados Unidos fueron las siguientes: Gustavo Zingg & Asociados, Walter Hadamovsky, Werner Pruchnow & Asociados, Química Schering C.A., Bruer Möller & Asociados, etc. Nos llama la atención la presencia de Gustavo Zingg en esta lista, uno de los empresarios más exitosos de Venezuela en el siglo XX. ¿Qué relación pudo tener Zingg con el Partido Nazi?

¿Cuáles eran los planes del Tercer Reich en Venezuela? El sistema de inteligencia estadounidense, gracias a sus fuentes confidenciales en Venezuela –omitidas en los informes–, supo que Andres Daniel Hogfeldt y Walter Sachs intentaron negociar un convenio de suministro petrolero con el presidente Isaías Medina Angarita, al cual intentaron sobornar con dinero y regalos. Se sospechó que el capital de estos empresarios no era en realidad de origen sueco, sino alemán. Los nazis podrían haber estado detrás de esta operación.

También llama la atención una fuente documental que se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional de Venezuela, la cual lleva por titulo: Textos y documentos referentes a la historia de los judíos en Venezuela – Colegio Moral y Luces Herzl-Bialik (1977). En esta publicación se habla de un informe minucioso sobre las actividades nazis en Venezuela. Este informe fue consignado a la Asamblea Nacional de Venezuela en 1972, llama mucho la atención la mención a la Casa John Boulton y sus empleados. Casi todos los empleados alemanes de las grandes empresas alemanas en Venezuela eran mencionados en el informe. El nombre Paul Waldeck resalta en la lista, visto que décadas atrás había aparecido en un informe de inteligencia estadounidense.

Todo esto nos sugiere que la presencia nazi en Venezuela ha sido más importante de lo que muchos piensan y que los grandes grupos económicos venezolanos pudieron estar relacionados con los intereses del Partido Nazi. La Casa John Boulton es nombrada en las investigaciones realizadas por la Minoría Unificada del Congreso Nacional. ¿Quiénes eran los señores Schnell, Lemke y Braun? ¿Por qué estos tres señores administraban junto a Weldeck los fondos nazis en Venezuela? ¿Cuál era la misión de estos señores? ¿Por qué Estados Unidos incluyó a Gustavo Zingg en una lista negra? Estas son grandes incógnitas de la historia contemporánea de Venezuela en el siglo XX. En nuestro país hay muchas historias que no han sido contadas.

One of Germany’s richest families, whose company owns a controlling interest in Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Panera Bread, Pret a Manger and other well-known businesses, plans to donate millions to charity after learning about their ancestors’ enthusiastic support of Adolf Hitler and use of forced laborers under the Nazis, according to a report Sunday.

In a four-page report, the Bild newspaper reported that documents uncovered in Germany, France and the U.S. reveal that Albert Reimann Sr. and Albert Reimann Jr. used Russian civilians and French POWs as forced laborers.

Family spokesman Peter Harf, who is one of two managing partners of the Reimann’s JAB Holding Company, said recent internal research confirmed Bild’s findings.

“It is all correct,” he told the newspaper. “Reimann senior and Reimann junior were guilty … they belonged in jail.”

The father and son, who died in 1954 and 1984, did not talk about the Nazi era and the family had thought that all of the company’s connection to the Nazis had been revealed in a 1978 report, Harf said.

But after reading documents kept by the family, the younger generation began to ask questions and commissioned a University of Munich historian in 2014 to examine the Reimann history more thoroughly, Harf said.

The expert presented his preliminary findings to the Reimann children and grandchildren, as well as Hanf, several weeks ago, he said.

“We were all ashamed and turned as white as the wall,” he said. “There is nothing to gloss over. These crimes are disgusting.”

In addition to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Pret a Manger, the Luxembourg-based JAB Holding Co. has controlling stakes in Keurig Green Mountain, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Caribou Coffee Co., Panera Bread and other companies.

Many German companies have acknowledged using slave laborers during the Nazi era and have conducted their own independent investigations.

In 2000, the German government approved a 10 billion mark (about 5.1 billion euro) fund to provide compensation, with half the money coming from companies like Bayer, Siemens, Deutsche Bank, Daimler-Benz, Volkswagen, and AEG.

Bild reported that even before the Nazis came to power, the Reimanns donated to the paramilitary SS.

During World War II, the company used forced laborers in its industrial chemicals company. It was not clear how many were used overall, but Bild said in 1943, 175 forced laborers were being used, about 30 percent of its workforce.

In addition to Russian and other Eastern European civilians, the company used French prisoners of war — about whom Reimann Jr. complained in a letter to the Ludwigshafen mayor in 1940 that they weren’t working hard enough.

After the war, the two were investigated by the occupying Allied powers and initially banned by the French from continuing their business activities but then had the judgment overturned by the Americans, Bild reported.

Harf said the family would donate 10 million euros ($11.3 million) to a not-yet-determined charity as a gesture, and once the historian’s report is complete, it would be released to the public.

“The whole truth must be put on the table,” he said.

I thought I would message Dr. Lotte to see if she had any research material she could recommend to help with this project. she very very kindly put me in touch with a friend of hers Angelo Stitz, a graphic and type designer based in Berlin.

Stitz gave me a lot of really interesting points to consider and think about. some of which I have touched on in previous posts but he went into detail and provided a good insight into the reasoning behind Herbert Bayer’s design and why he felt the needed to create it. it is all stuff that will help inform my design decisions and create something true to its inspiration. below is what he said;

1. Universal as a matter of ‘Accessibility’. The standardization of different German writing systems (Antiqua, Fraktur, Kurrent, Sütterlin) that all had to be learned by Germans in school co-existed at the same time. Those were confusing when German catalogues eg at the world exhibition in Paris https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposition_Universelle_(1889) could not be read by French or English people. Peter Behrens eg tried to suggest a new type so called ‘Behrensschrift’ where he attempt to reunify, clearify those different writing systems into one to make it more readable. This aim of being efficient went so far that eg Max Bill said in a sense ‘i am writing from now on only in lowercase letters, because its faster’. You have to know in German language within sentences some words are written with first capital letters others don’t, which increases correction cycles in print and so on. He (Bill) argued emphasizing vocals in words could increase its recognizability to comprehend the tone of voice. This deeply understanding of relating all your senses as a designer into a 2D visual representation came from Bauhaus, because it was connected with a multidisciplinary education.

The attempt to be universal was also attached to the idea to disconnect the letter shape from its (emotional) writing tools and to find a clear, reduced, neutral, pure, general form of language that is timeless.

Adolf Hitler’s friends have lousy memories, but the Nazi enterprise would not have been possible without their help.

Like his colleagues Mussolini and Franco, Hitler got approval early on from the Catholic Church.

Hugo Boss dressed his troops.

Deutsche Bank financed the construction of the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

IG Farben, the giant chemical conglomerate, which later on changed its name to Bayer, BASF, and Hoechst, used concentration camp prisoners as guinea pigs and workers. These slave laborers made everything, even the gas that killed them.

The prisoners also worked for other companies, like Krupp, Thyssen, Siemens, VARTA, Bosch, Daimler-Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW, which provided an economic foundation for the Nazi madness.

Swiss banks made a killing buying the gold jewelry and teeth of Hitler’s victims. The gold crossed the border with astonishing ease, while the gates remained hermetically sealed to flesh and blood trying to escape.

Coca-cola came up with Fanta for the German market smack in the middle of war. During that period, Unilever, Westinghouse, and General Electric also boosted their investments and profits in the country. When the war ended, ITT received a multimillion-dollar settlement for damages to its factories in Germany caused by Allied bombing.

A recent Monsanto lawsuit opens a scary window into the industry of junk science.

A recent lawsuit against Monsanto offers a clear and troubling view into industry strategies that warp research for corporate gain. In a lawsuit regarding the possible carcinogenicity of the pesticide Roundup, plaintiffs’ lawyers suing Monsanto charge the company with ghostwriting an academic study finding that Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, is not harmful. Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used weed killer and is critical for successful cultivation of genetically modified crops such as corn and soybean, which are resistant to the pesticide.

Ghostwriting remains pervasive in some areas of academic research; in 2010, I helped author a Senate report on the matter. Studies drafted by corporations and then published in scientific journals with academic authors have been used to sway government decisions, court cases, and even medical practice. A host of universities have been caught in ghostwriting scandals, including Harvard University, Brown University, Stanford University, and Emory University.

The study currently under scrutiny appeared in 2000 in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, the journal of the International Society of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. On closer inspection, the ghostwriting charges seem unconvincing , and Science magazine reports that officials at one university have investigated and rejected the charges.

Monsanto has also strenuously denied the ghostwriting allegations and defends the integrity of the study on a blog: “The paper also underwent the journal’s rigorous peer review process before it was published.”

But the term “rigorous” is hardly an accurate description for the journal. Indeed, a glance into the journal’s history offers a telling window into the industry of creating and packaging junk science with the appearance of academic rigor.

“Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology is a vanity journal that publishes mercenary science created by polluters and producers of toxic chemicals to manufacture uncertainty about the science underlying public-health and environmental protections.” says David Michaels, professor of environmental and occupational health at the George Washington University School of Public Health. (Michaels recently returned to this position after serving as the administrator of the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration.)

The problem is that it’s not just Monsanto, and it’s not just this one journal. Corporations regularly buy academics to do their bidding, recasting industry talking points to create the beginnings of an alternative scientific canon.

The history here is long, and damning. In 2002, several academics and public-health activists sent a letter to Elsevier complaining that the journal lacked transparency and a conflicts-of-interest policy, and that it could not demonstrate editorial independence from corporate sponsors. A couple of years later, I began studying the ISRTP’s membership and journal, and combing through the minutes of the society’s meetings.

The year before the journal published the Roundup study, the society held its June 1999 council meeting in the Washington, D.C., office of Keller and Heckman, the chief law firm for the chemical industry. In a recent court case, for example, Keller and Heckman represented the Vinyl Institute in a lawsuit to roll back 2012 regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency limiting toxics emitted during PVC production. Keller and Heckman also bills itself as the premier law firm for the tobacco and e-vapor industries. The minutes from the June meeting note a member of Keller and Heckman attending along with representatives of several chemical industry trade associations. Minutes from February 2002 also record the meeting taking place in Keller and Heckman’s D.C. office and state that future meetings will also be held at the law firm.

“[I]t is unusual to see a regulatory toxicology journal run out of a law practice office!” says Dr. Lynn Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University and one of the signatories on the 2002 letter.

“Having its meetings hosted by a corporate law firm is so obviously inappropriate — unless you aren’t so much a scientific society as a faux-science outlet for the corporate clients and funders of the journal’s authors,” says Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist who specializes in chemical policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council and is another of the 2002 letter signatories. After reviewing the Roundup study published in 2000, Sass says it doesn’t appear to be “what we normally call ghostwriting.” The study’s acknowledgement section, which is hidden behind the journal’s paywall, clearly notes Monsanto’s heavy involvement in the study’s science.*

“These people wouldn’t be able to stuff the scientific literature so successfully — muddying the waters and creating the false impression of controversy — if they didn’t have their go-to journals like Reg Tox Pharm,” she adds.

Examining the journal’s editorial board, Sheldon Krimsky, a professor at Tufts University who studies conflicts of interest and corporate influence on science, notes that industry consultants litter the journal’s masthead. Indeed, the journal’s editor is Gio Gori, a former consultant for the tobacco industry. In 1998, Gori partnered with Steven J. Milloy of JunkScience.com in a letter to Science magazine criticizing a story about tobacco consultants. I later outed Milloy in the New Republic for being on the payroll of the tobacco companies while writing articles for FoxNews.com that disparaged the science of second-hand smoke. And, in 2007, Gori published an op-ed in the Washington Post calling the science of second-hand smoke “bogus.”

Gori’s work for tobacco, Krimsky says, “places his credibility down at the bottom.”

Other controversial members of the journal’s editorial board include Michael L. Dourson and Dennis J. Paustenbach. Dourson is the president of TERA, a scientific consulting firm that was the subject of a 2014 investigation by Inside Climate News and the Center for Public Integrity highlighting the group’s cozy ties to industry. Documents made public during tobacco litigation note Dourson’s work for the industry.

When questioned about his tobacco consulting, Dourson said: “Jesus hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors. He had dinner with them.” He continued, “We’re an independent group that does the best science for all these things. Why should we exclude anyone that needs help?”

In 2005, the Wall Street Journal ran a front-page story questioning the role of Paustenbach and his company ChemRisk in a case that became the basis for the movie Erin Brockovich. According to the Journal, ChemRisk was hired to reanalyze data from a study that found chromium-contaminated groundwater linked with a range of public-health illnesses. Chemrisk’s reanalysis of data was then published in a new study under the names of two Chinese researchers without any mention of ChemRisk’s involvement, and was promoted for the next decade in court cases and regulatory filings. After the Journal article, the study was retracted, and environmental groups sought to have Paustenbach censured by the Society of Toxicology.

Seven years later, the Chicago Tribune wrote an investigative story critical of Paustenbach’s work for the chemical industry on flame retardants, and the Center for Public Integrity published an investigation last year noting Paustenbach’s work for Ford Motor Company to downplay the dangers of asbestos in car brake pads.

“This might be a kind of a rogue journal that looks like a journal,” Krimsky says.

The problem is that it’s not just Monsanto, and it’s not just this one journal. Corporations regularly buy academics to do their bidding, recasting industry talking points to create the beginnings of an alternative scientific canon. Universities do little to stop it, while academic journals, sometimes prestigious, are often complicit. Perhaps public shame remains the most — or only — effective medicine.

A cancer victim's surprise court victory over US pesticide maker Monsanto could open the floodgates to a slew of similar lawsuits, potentially leaving the firm's new German owner with a major case of buyer's remorse.                                                                                          

From the toxic legacy of Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller to fears about its use of genetically modified seeds, here's what you need to know about the $63-billion (55-billion-euro) merger between Bayer and Monsanto.

Heroin

Founded in Germany in 1863, Bayer is still best known for making aspirin. More infamously, it briefly sold heroin in the early 20th century, marketed as a cough cure and morphine substitute.

During World War II, Bayer was part of a consortium called IG Farben that made the Zyklon B pesticide used in Adolf Hitler's gas chambers.

Through a series of acquisitions over the years, Bayer has grown into a drug and chemicals behemoth and now employs some 100,000 people worldwide.

Agent Orange

Monsanto was established in St. Louis, Missouri in 1901, setting out to make saccharine.

By the 1940s, it was producing farm-oriented chemicals, including herbicide 2,4-D which, combined with another dangerous chemical was used to make the notorious Vietnam War-era defoliant Agent Orange.

In 1976, the company launched probably its best-known product, the weed killer Roundup.

In the 1980s, its scientists were the first to genetically modify a plant cell. Monsanto then started buying other seed companies and began field trials of GM seeds.

It eventually developed soybean, corn, cotton and other crops engineered to be tolerant of Roundup.

Goodbye 'Monsatan'

Dubbed "Monsatan" and "Mutanto", the US firm has for decades been in the crosshairs of environmentalists, especially in Europe, who believe that GM food could be unsafe to eat.

Campaigners also abhor Monsanto's production of glyphosate-based Roundup, which some scientists have linked to cancer although other studies dispute this.

Hoping to ditch Monsanto's poisonous reputation, Bayer has said it plans to drop the company's name from its products.

But Friends of the Earth, which has dubbed the merger a "marriage made in hell", said it would simply switch its protests to Bayer so long as it continues Monsanto's practices.

Another complaint about the latest consolidation in the industry is that it leaves the global seeds and pesticides market in the hands of just a few players—potentially pushing up prices and limiting choices for farmers and consumers.

Hello, lawsuits?

A California jury last week ordered Monsanto to pay nearly $290 million in damages to a dying groundskeeper after finding that the company failed to warn him that using Roundup products might cause cancer.

Observers say the landmark win by Dewayne Johnson, who has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, could pave the way for thousands of cases against Monsanto.

Bayer's share price plunged more than 10 percent in response.

Monsanto has vowed to appeal the ruling, while Bayer insisted that herbicides containing glyphosate are "safe".

Analyst Michael Leacock of MainFirst bank said the legal setback was "an unlucky outcome" for Bayer just two months after sealing the takeover.

"It is highly likely that investors will take a very dim view of the recent deal," he said.

High price to pay

In an industry preparing for a global population surge with many more mouths to feed, Bayer was keen to get its hands on Monsanto's market-leading line in GM crop seeds designed to resist strong pesticides like Roundup.

It was also lured by Monsanto's data analytics business Climate Corp, believing farmers will in future rely on digital monitoring of their crops.

But the takeover, one of the largest ever by a German firm, comes at a high cost.

As well as the eye-watering price tag, Bayer had to give up much of its seeds and agrichemical business to satisfy competition concerns.

Those divestitures have gone to none other than Bayer's homegrown rival BASF, the unexpected beneficiary of the mammoth deal.

And following the California court verdict, Bayer may now have to set aside huge sums to settle future Roundup claims.

"The total cost, in our view, could easily reach $10 billion" if Bayer were to settle with a still larger number of plaintiffs, said Leacock.

Dezember eine Südtribüne für die kleinen Patienten. Ein spezieller Beamer lässt seither Bilder der gelben Wand im MRT-Raum an allen Wänden erscheinen. Die kleinen Patienten können aus einer Vielzahl von Videos eines auswählen um sich abzulenken, darunter nun der BVB-Film „Heimspiel“. Produziert hat diesen kleinen Film der Dortmunder Filmemacher Adolf Winkelmann. Finanziell ermöglicht haben das die BVB-Stiftung „leuchte auf“, die Sparda-Bank West und mit André Schürrle, Shinji Kagawa, Marco Reus, Sven Bender (mittlerweile bei Bayer Leverkusen) und Sokratis Papastathopoulos fünf Profis. So kamen 30.000 EUR zusammen, die in das aufwändige Videoprojekt flossen. „Wir bedanken uns ganz herzlich bei unserem langjährigen Partner Sparda-Bank West und natürlich auch bei allen beteiligten Spielern für die Spenden. So konnten wir ein einzigartiges Projekt in Dortmund schaffen – und wahrscheinlich sogar einzigartig auf der ganzen Welt“, sagt Marco Rühmann, Stiftungsmanager von „leuchte auf“. Filmemacher Adolf Winkelmann erzählt, dass diese außergewöhnliche Produktion sein Team und ihn vor besondere Herausforderungen stellte. Einerseits sollte die Atmosphäre des Stadions eingefangen werden, dabei müsse sie aber beruhigend auf die Kinder wirken, die für eine längere Zeit im MRT behandelt werden müssen und dabei möglichst ruhig liegen bleiben sollen. Die Tonübertragung war ein Novum für den Filmemacher: Da das MRT (Magnet-Resonanz-Tomograph) auf die nähere Umgebung magnetisch reagiert, können keine Metallteile verwendet werden. Ein normaler Kopfhörer scheidet so also aus. Stattdessen wird der Ton mittels eines komplizierten Luftdruck-Verfahrens in die Ohren übermittelt. „Das mussten wir bei der Tonbearbeitung berücksichtigen und anpassen“, erklärt Winkelmann. Vor der Anschaffung des Kinder-MRT mussten die jungen Patienten oft durch Narkose ruhig gestellt werden, damit sie die teils über 30-Minuten lange Prozedur fast reglos überstanden. Seit das Kinder-MRT im Einsatz ist, stehen den Kindern viele Projektionen zur Auswahl zur Verfügung, die sie beruhigen können. Auf eine Narkose kann daher zumeist verzichtet werden. Mehr als 1.000 Kinder konnten seither stress- und angstfrei untersucht werden. Das Kinder-MRT selbst ist ein Projekt des Westfälischen Kinderzentrums, der Klinik für Radiologie und Neuroradiologie, das durch Spendengelder von BVB-Stiftung „leuchte auf“, BVB-Fanclubs, Unternehmen und Privatpersonen, sowie eine Förderung des Landes NRW finanziert werden konnte.

Week 6: WW1 & Modernism

During World War One, Modernism played a role in changing the way design was portrayed. 

Modernism means rejecting traditional forms and decorative elements by solutions can be sought by making it simple and direct. Systematic methods are used rather than intuitive ones, so relationships in form and content can be thought out.

Through Modernism, specific designs are carried by the use of geometric shapes; circles, triangles and squares. Primary colours and Sans-serif typefaces that showcase typographical material, with the use of photographs photomontage, and silhouetted photographs with white backgrounds instead of drawings and illustrations. The use of asymmetric page layout, a planned visual hierarchy, and, maps and diagrams. Overall, the specifications help to differentiate Modernism as an individual global movement. 

“Degenerate Art” was a term that was addressed by the Nazis, exclaiming that Modernism is works of art that cannot be understood, as well as claiming that Modernism was a product of the Jews and Bolsheviks. This led to Adolf Hitler persecute modern artists, designers, or anyone in the creative field if they didn’t fit his needs. Which caused many artists to flee Europe to America, this was seen as a cultural shift of creativity. 

The movement to the States made an effect on the design community, with;

- 717 artists

- 100 graphic designers 

- 380 architects 

Artists including Alexey Brodovitch, Herbert Bayer, Lester Beall, Herbert Marter, Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, Milton Glaser, and Saul Bass all played a key part in the American Modernist Movement. This movement opened by European movement, allowed more expressive art to be conveyed and flow through abstractiveness. One of the first commercial artists, Paul Rand was influenced by the Swiss style of graphic design, in which creating famous logo designs for IBM, ABC, UPS, Westington House Identity etc.

The evolution of IBM’s logos changed from a crowded to a more sophisticated, suitable emphasis on the company’s branding. Paul Rand went through different designs, first starting off subtly by giving the IBM letters a more solid, grounded and balanced appearance. Playing with the shape of letterforms, he used a bold-looking typeface called City, where he lengthened the serifs and made the stacked squares of the ‘B’ larger. However, he wasn’t satisfied with the logo, so he introduced stripes to it, to emphasise the unity and the speed and dynamism that represented well to the company. The logo has remained the same ever since. 

Moving back to Europe, after the loss of WW1 in Germany, the Ulm School of Design was founded in 1953 by Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill. The design school leading second from Bauhaus who used modernist principles to create contemporary looks that fit well in society, designed the likes of the first mascots, visual pictograms for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, as well as working with typography and branding, as such Lufthansa logo in 1962.
