Transcending Loss and Disconnection.
How the Tibetan Book of the Dead provides insight for Adoptees.
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is an ancient text that has been used for centuries as a guide for the soul during the process of dying and the afterlife. The text is traditionally read aloud to the dying person and is also used in funeral ceremonies. It teaches about the bardos, which are intermediate states between death and rebirth.
It could be said that Adoptees transition through two(2) full sets of bardos. One before/after/between lives, and one “during THIS lifetime” which is something no other being faces.
The bardos, as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, can be seen as a metaphor for the adoptee experience. Adoptees may feel that they are in a state of constant transition and change as they navigate the unknown landscape of their adoption. They may feel a sense of disconnection from their birth families and cultures, and may struggle with issues of identity, belonging, and self-worth. The teachings of the text can offer comfort and validation for adoptees as they navigate their own journey of self-discovery and understanding.

Happy birthday to my son who I gladly share a birthday with in November. Everyone needs a Shepard in their lives. Forget solar power or nuclear power, Shep has an endless supply of energy. He’s curious and stubborn like me. God knew we needed you Shep even before the foundation of the world. We said yes when we got the call and we have been so blessed to be your parents through it all. I can’t remember our lives before you and can’t imagine our lives without you. So grateful for foster care and adoption. I’m so glad that God made you, YOU. Love you my son. In August 2022, Pat called me. “Your gran is in hospital. It’s not looking good”.
Because of this, my gran had asked to meet me. Pat passed on a phone number for my grans cleaner, we will call her Netta. I presumed this was so Netta could give me details of how to visit.
I immediately rang her and something seemed strange. She said she couldn’t wait for us to be ‘one big family’. She was cheerful, upbeat despite the dire situation, and said she was excited to meet me. She kept calling herself ‘Davina McColl’ despite the fact it was me who had got in contact.
She then insisted it would be best if we met when Gran was back at her bungalow. Then, she also insisted she was there when we met. This set me on edge- Pat had painted a bleak picture. I had the impression that Gran wasn’t leaving hospital.
Netta told me that all contact must go through her- messages, cards or gifts I wanted to give my gran.
Fearing, Gran wouldn’t see the following week I explained I needed to see her. and I would get a professional person to introduce us i.e nurse at the hospital. Netta didn’t seem to like this (text messages on fb page).
With all the mixed messages there was one thing clear. My gran was desperate to speak to me. So, I picked up the phone to the hospital.
A nurse was put on the line. When I said I was her granddaughter, she chuckled to herself. “You wouldn’t be Maria by any chance. I’ve heard the story. Your gran really wants to see you.”
The nurse said she needed to put my gran on, because her words were “she is desperate to speak to you.” Before I knew it, I heard her voice for the first time. My gran had a small but lively voice. Similar enough to mine, just as I had been told again, and again. Her voice chocked up a bit as we spoke, and though we were both overwhelmed there were no nerves.
Plans were made for me to visit, and for the nurse to introduce us, then leave. This was the aftermath of covid, and so only two people could sit around a bed. I have two children, who were both desperate to see her and who she was desperate to meet, so it wasn’t possible for the nurse to stay.
“You’re not getting rid of me that easily,” she joked. Those words will stick with me forever.
Finally, after so many years, so many obstacles, we were going to meet.

I’m an international adoptee from Eger, Hungary. My original birth certificate is still in Hungary and I am not allowed to have access to it. It will remain sealed. This is common among closed & international adoptions to protect the *identity* of birth parents. Is this fair to adoptees?

Not your usual Valentine’s Day post… Today is bittersweet for me. Whilst I love any excuse to celebrate love, it’s also my birth mother’s birthday. (Or so I’ve been told) So every day, I think of her. A woman that had the strength and courage to give me up for a better life. And yet I’ve experienced so many feeling of anger and abandonment over the years. Knowing I could never give my little ones up. I would never have the strength to make that sacrifice. And I’m so grateful for the life I’ve been gifted. My family now is everything. I have everything. And I wouldn’t change it for anything, because I got to meet my Bebe @loveandlegends, and if you know him you know the kind of man he is. We have been through the darkest nights and the lightest days together and I love you. I love you more than anything. Plus we made the best two kiddos ever. So today, I am not just honouring love between lovers. I’m holding love between loved ones strong in my heart. Especially the ones who I never got the chance to experience love with. Who can you love and honour today? Bedtime cuddles! 🥰 My husband's been away for a few days and found it hard to peel himself away from the children at bedtime. Had to tell him to stop being so fun, so they will go to sleep! Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have. Margaret Mead The reality is that in our “great” state there are children who are displaced from what they know as “home” and family. And the reasons are numerous and no case is the same but there’s is a common thread woven in each story and that is a need for belonging and safety. That’s where hopefully you can help. Fostering isn’t for everyone but everyone can make a difference. Each case goal is to reunify the family if that is possible and safe however a HUGE percentage end up needing to be adopted. That’s hard, very hard and that is the tragedy of the fall of man and sin. I believe every child needs a home, how about you? #fostercare #fosteringsaveslives #foster #fosterfamily #adoption #james127 #grace #mercy #hope #family #novembernationaladoptionmonth #adoptionawareness #jesus #gospel https://www.instagram.com/p/CW3F8O6sajm/?utm_medium=tumblr
