On YouTube crime videos there's like a 4 min ad break every 10 mins and I get SO frustrated. Right now I have the stupid free trial of yt premium or whatever but there's still the sponsored 5 min ad in the video that I always have to skip over >:p why so many ads??????

oh dude, don’t actually pay for youtube premium though. watch out for the end of that free period. there are adblocks made specifically for youtube in browser - i’ve been using the adblock for youtube extension for chrome by adremover and it’s been working just fine. had to get a specific adblock for youtube though, because my otherwise finely functional adblock just doesn’t do that feature. (there’s also an extension for spotify that at least mutes the constant ads when they come up, because i will deadass rip my own ears off sooner than pay for spotify premium and that goes tenfold for youtube premium) the things i’ve been complaining about are JUST the built-in ads and sponsorships (which i understand of course but can rarely tolerate when spaced in deliberately hard-to-skip and flow ruining fashion, like pausing your show for a five minute ad block every 10 minutes)

Andrey Meshkov, the cofounder of ad-blocker AdGuard, took a look at the script in some popular ad-blocking knockoffs and found some shady business. .

"Meshkov discovered that the AdRemover extension for Chrome—which had over 10 million users—had code hidden inside an image that was loaded from the remote command server, giving the extension creator the ability to change its functions without updating. This alone is against Google’s policy, and after Meshkov wrote about a few examples on AdGuard’s blog, many of which had millions of downloads, Chrome removed the extensions from the store. I reached out to Google, and a spokesperson confirmed that these extensions had been removed."

Es handelt sich unter um gefälschte Werbeblocker. Sie sammeln im Hintergrund Daten und übermitteln sie an Server im Internet. Per Skript können sie praktisch alle Funktionen des Browsers steuern.

Der Adblocker-Anbieter AdGuard hat im Chrome Web Store insgesamt fünf Erweiterungen für den Google-Browser entdeckt, die offenbar ihre Nutzer ausspähen. Es handelt sich unter anderem um vermeintliche Werbeblocker, die nach Ansicht der Forscher den Wunsch der Anwender ausnutzen, unerwünschte Werbung auf Websites auszublenden. Zusammen wurde die fraglichen Erweiterungen mehr als 20 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen.

Eine der Erweiterungen – AdRemover für Google Chrome – brachte es zwischenzeitlich auf mehr als 10 Millionen Nutzer. Laut AdGuard handelt es sich um eine Kopie von AdBlock, der einige Zeilen Code sowie Analytics-Funktionen hinzugefügt wurden. Die Analyse der Erweiterung förderte ein verstecktes Skript zu Tage, dass jegliche Anfragen des Browsers abhört und mit einer Liste von vordefinierten Signaturen vergleicht.

Wird eine Website von dieser Liste aufgerufen, lädt das Skript einen iFrame von einer ebenfalls vordefinierten Domain und übermittelt Informationen über die besuchte Seite. Die Signaturen wiederum entsprechen häufig besuchten Seiten wie Google.com.

Ein weiteres Skript fanden die Forscher in einem Bild, dass AdRemover bei jeder Initialisierung lädt. Es führte zum Zeitpunkt der Untersuchung jedoch keine schädlichen Aufgaben aus. „Das kann sich jederzeit ändern. Da das Skript in einem privilegierten Kontext ausgeführt wird, kann es buchstäblich alles mit Ihrem Browser machen“, heißt es im Blog von AdGuard.

Aufgrund der Funktionsweise des zweiten Skripts, das Befehle von einem Server im Internet empfangen kann, stuft AdGuard die Erweiterung als „ein Botnetz aus Browsern“ ein. „Der Browser wird genau das machen, was der Besitzer des Befehlsservers vorgibt.“

Ähnliche Funktion fanden die Forscher auch in den Erweiterungen uBlock Plus (mehr als 8 Millionen Nutzer), AdBlock Pro (mehr als 2 Millionen Nutzer), HD for Youtube (mehr als 400.000 Nutzer) und Webutation (mehr als 30.000 Nutzer). „Wir haben diese Erweiterungen an Google gemeldet. Hoffentlich werden sie schnell entfernt“, ergänzten die Forscher.

Google hat zeitnah auf die Beschwerde von AdGuard reagiert. Einem Update des Blogeintrags zufolge wurden alle fünf Erweiterungen innerhalb eines Tages entfernt.

More than 20 million Chrome users installed fake malicious Ad Blockers

Ad Blockers hurt the earnings of a website at the same time it lets users browse the Internet without the hassle of closing irritating popup ads and getting redirected to scammy sites that bombard users with spam during the process.

Google, on the other hand, is home to some of the most innovative applications and products but at the same time, the technology giant is poor at keeping them secure from malware and other malicious attacks, information security experts said. The same goes for its Chrome browser that is being used by over 1 billion people on desktop and Android devices.

In a report, information security researchers at Adguard software Limited have revealed that Google’s Chrome browser is a hub to tons of fake extensions especially malicious Ad Blockers. So much so that currently, according to Adguard, there are more than 20 million Chrome users who have installed fake Ad Blocker extensions on their browser – Thanks to poor security implementation by whoever monitors Chrome’s WebStore.

One of the examples of how these fake extensions have become a part of our online life is the “AdRemover for Google Chrome” extension with over 10 million users. On further inspection, Adguard researchers discovered two .txt files containing obfuscated scripts keeping a track of every request made by the unsuspected victim’s browser.

Adguard information security researchers have labeled it as a “natural botnet” comprised of millions of infected browsers that can be or already being used to steal personal data of Chrome users and sending it to command and control center (C&C) by hiding its attack inside the harmless-looking image.

“This hidden script was listening to every request made by your browser and compared with md5(url + “%Ujy%BNY0O”) the list of signatures loaded from coupons.txt. When the said signature was hit, it loaded an iframe from the domaing.qyz.sx passing information about the visited page and then re-initialized the extension. For instance, one of these signatures corresponded to https://www.google.com/,” researchers noted.

Nevertheless, there are four other fake Adblockers on Chrome Webstore currently following the same path as AdRemover for Google Chrome extension.

Adguard information security experts has already informed Google about the presence of malicious Adblockers on Chrome Webstore however at the time of publishing all above-listed extensions were still available for installation. Therefore, if you are using any of these Adblockers it is advised to get rid of them right now.
