He didn't understand what guapo (handsome) meant but heard it frequently in his direction

His pride wouldn't let him ask you

Sulked for the rest of the night

"Si."

Mammon:

Yeah he picked up *some* Spanish due to possible illegal activities

Took advantage of the free chips and salsa

Wore the title of "El Mamon" proudly without knowing it can be translated to "Idiot" in Spanish

Writeblr Intro!

Hi everyone! My name is Leng, and welcome to my blog. I write software by day and stories by night. Occasionally, I also dabble in illustrating my own works.

What I Write

I write YA fantasy set in secondary worlds heavily inspired by precolonial Tagalog society. They feature premises and creatures found in traditional folklore. If you like stories about family, friendship, and magic, with some adventure and intrigue, I think you'll like my work!

All my stories are bilingual. I strive to write both an English and Tagalog version of each, partly as a way for me to continue practising my mother tongue, and also as a way to remedy the disappointing lack of Tagalog fantasy set in secondary worlds out there. You know, be the change you want to see in the world, and all that.

My WIP

I'm currently working on a cozy fantasy called King Eyes. It's about a young storyteller named Dalon, who uses an amulet called "King Eyes" to read the mind of his friend, Kari, who has a vivid imagination. Together, they try their best to craft stories for extra money, even as they must keep their partnership a secret.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! I didn't used to in my earlier fandom days but now I'm pretty consistent about it.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I once wrote a major character death fic for Queer as Folk where Justin died. Not really my style anymore. Back in my ff.net days I also wrote Merthur major character death fic, I'm just remembering.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I always try and do happily ever afters! A lot of my stories end with a sense of "and then they continue on their adventures, and life isn't always simple or easy", so in terms of the most pure, joyful ending? I guess I'll go living proof, which is the end of my episode series for Roswell, NM, which is just a "now they're married and happy forever" fic.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have before, but not as a rule. Once got called an abuse apologist & incest support (oh the horror /s) for exploring the canonical close friendship (not even a romantic relationship!) between two dudes from Shadowhunters lmao. And there's a troll in the Roswell fandom who writes hilarious and idiotic unhinged rants and I've been hit by her before, but she's got a scatter-shot approach and attacks a lot of people, so, at least I know it's nothing personal.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yep! What is meant by "what kind" here? lol. I'm pretty vanilla. Mostly m/m, but I usually don't pass over the chance for m/m/f. I actually recently wrote my very first m/f full-on sex scene ever for a little Magicians snippet, Kady/Penny lol.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

No, I don't wrote crossovers in the sense that characters from various worlds don't meet each other in my fics. HOWEVER, two of my favorite things I've ever written have been Magicians AUs that crossed over the characters from that show with the full plot from other films. One is The Old Guard (A Comet Pulled From Orbit), and one is When Harry Met Sally (When Quentin Met Eliot).

Not to my knowledge

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, a few times! Used to happen a lot back with old ff.net stuff, and I recently had my good omens fic translated.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

I'm co-writing a series right now! First time I've ever done it and it's a blast.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

uhhhhh don't make me choose? lmao. In terms of fandom engagement and longevity I guess Queliot at this point. But in terms of... the ships that made me discover and appreciate and explore fandom in the first place? Kirk/Spock and Brian/Justin. Classics.

16. What are your writing strengths?

dialogue and tone setting, I think?

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

plot details (I get bored and distracted mapping things out)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

tbh I usually wince when I see it in fic? I'm not a fan. It always feels a little silly. Maybe very very sparingly if there's like a singular phrase or term of endearment or something but I'd rather just indicate that someone is speaking another language rather than write it out. I feel like it can often be tokenizing if you just have one character who's bilingual and you give them little one-liners in a different language. Idk. If the author is bilingual and doing a thing, then that's awesome. But I can usually tell when someone's just using google translate for stuff lol.

The Savage Beard of She Dwarf by Kyle Latino

She Dwarf might be the last of her kind, but this only fuels her desire for adventure, danger, and travel. Her famous warrior mother died before she could lead She Dwarf though the final coming of age trials, so our hero is on a quest to find the lost kingdom of Dwarves to see what knowledge she can gain from the ruins. A long the way she battles and befriends a whimsical cast of misfits who end up tagging along for the journey for reasons of their own. This story is action packed, fun, beautifully drawn and extremely aesthetically queer though there are no outright discussions of anyone's gender or sexuality. I highly recommend this comic for fantasy comic fans of all ages, it was released during covid and never got the promotion or attention it deserved. Buy this book for someone for the holidays!

Under a Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire, read by Michelle Dockrey

This third book is the series is more whimsical and light than the first two, which I suppose makes sense as it takes place primarily in a nonsense world. It introduces a few new characters, as well as bringing back Christopher and Kane from book 1. A group of these teens sets out together on a quest, but not all of them return to Earth at the end of it. I'm definitely planning to continue with the audio books of this series.

Batcat by Meggie Ramm

This magical, brightly-colored tale follows Batcat, a creature of comfort, who is driven out of their cozy home by an annoyingly friendly ghost. On their quest, Batcat is forced to face some of their deepest fears (the dark, being eaten) and some of their biggest questions: are they more a bat, or more a cat? Readers of all ages who have wondered about their own place in a world keen on dividing things into categories will relate to this quandary, and delight in the playful ways that Batcat defines themself outside of the binary. I got to read an advanced copy of this adorable book because it was written by a dear friend. Yes, I am biased, but I loved this story and highly recommend people check it out when it is released in March of 2023, or preorder it now!

Funny Planet: How Comedy Ruined Everything by Ken Jennings

This is a conversational, light, easy to read nonfiction that traces the way comedy and humor have spread their roots into almost every aspect of American life. Advertisements are now expected to be funny, as are politicians, the news, the modern art world and some types of avant-garde fashion and food. Also, social media, particularly twitter, which (even in its crumbling perhaps final days) is a near constant stream of jokes and jibes at every current happening, large or small, including very horrific tragedies that probably shouldn't be made light of. And things that were already funny, like sitcoms, have nearly doubled their joke density in the past 50 years. The author explores the historical development of comedy in these different fields, and also wonders what it is doing to our brains to be fed such a constant stream of jokes. I missed a lot of the references by virtue of having seen almost none of the TV shows or comedy specials the author was referring to, yet still found this a quick and lively read.

¡Ay, Mija!: My Bilingual Summer in Mexico by Christine Suggs

Suggs' debut memoir is a complete delight. The themes of language, translation, family, queerness, fatness, and being biracial are beautifully woven together into a rich and authentic whole. Nothing is overstated, simply presented as it was lived, and illustrated in a lovely palette of warm browns, bright golds, and smoothing blues. I loved the tiny avatar of the author's internal thoughts and how it interacted with the text and images on the page. This book uses all of the visual tools of comics to tell a wonderful coming of age story and the result is as sweet as pan dulce. I had the chance to read this book ahead of it's review and I can't recommend it more! Pre-order it now or look for it on shelves in April 2023.

The Box In The Woods by Maureen Johnson read by Kate Rudd

This fourth book in the Truly Devious YA murder mystery series introduces a new cold case for anxious teen detective Stevie Bell to bang her head against. This one, a quadruple murder from 1978 which took place in the woods outside a summer camp, was mishandled from the beginning. Dubbed 'The Box in the Woods' murders, the police at the time initially thought it was a drug deal gone wrong, then thought it might be the work of a contemporary serial killer. Stevie is hired by the new owner of the summer camp, who wants to make a podcast about the crime. Stevie doesn't care about the podcast, but she does love getting to bring her friends with her to a camp and getting her hands on a difficult case. This book continues to develop Stevie's friendships and romantic relationship in satisfying ways. I remain very delighted by and impressed with this series, and I'm excited there's a fifth book coming out before the end of the year!

Buzzing by Samuel Sattin and Rye Hickman

]The power of a supportive role playing group can't fix everything, but it goes a long way. Isaac is a teen with OCD, who suffers from near constant intrusive thoughts, cleverly visualized here as bees with mean voices. Over the story he builds confidence and community by leaning into his love of fantasy and drawing; as a former fellow misfit teen artist, it was wonderful to watch him grow. This is a nuanced and diverse coming of age story, I'm so excited for all of the readers who will discover it and see themselves in it. The art is excellent, both in the real world day to day parts of the story and the D&D fantasy parts of the story. I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of this book because I am friends with both of the authors- pre order it now, or look for it on shelves in July 2023!

Falcon written and read by Helen Macdonald

This was my second book this year by Helen MacDonald. Shorter and more traditionally nonfiction that H is for Hawk, this book is a collection of facts and anecdotes about the relationship of falcons and humans across many centuries and cultures. Human have long anthropomorphized falcons, attributing to them traits such as nobility, cunning, and martial prowess. Humans have been training and hunting with falcons for at least 3,000 years; lately, we have driven many species to near extinction, and created involved and wide ranging programs to try and rehabilitate the dwindling populations. I listened to this entire four hour audiobook during one long car ride and was well entertained the whole time.

Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni

Chris, Jo, Elise, and Alex bonded over being the only queer waiters at a restaurant, but their friendship long outlasted their stint at the job. Ten years on, the crew, now in their mid and late thirties, face a whole slew of new challenges: parenting, vying for promotions, balancing partying and work, being judged by baby gays at the club, and scariest of all, drifting apart. Fans of Bongiovanni's Grease Bats will enjoy the familiar flavors of a messy, horny, queer and trans friend squad but paired with a more nuanced slice-of-life narrative. These characters are trying to stay true to themselves, invest in their communities, get laid, and support each other. But it's not so easy to balance all of those conflicting needs, and they frequently fall short. I was left hoping that the characters could forgive each other's deeply human failings. I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of the book- it's available for pre-order now, or check it out when it's released in March 2023!

She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker Chan

What a wonderful book to end the year with! This one came highly recommended by many friends and did not disappoint. Epic in scale, with fantasy rooted in Chinese history, this story is set in an alternate mid-1300s with Mongols attempting to control all of mainland China, but resisted by a rebel force. The book opens with Zhu, the only daughter of a peasant family struggling to survive during a famine. A fortune teller predicted a great destiny for Zhu's one brother, and nothing for her. But when her brother dies, Zhu decides she will inhabit his destiny instead. She disguises herself as a boy to seek shelter and education in a monastery, a story trope I have always enjoyed, but especially here because this book takes the narrative in a explicitly trans/genderqueer direction by the end. 7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? OH GOSH I DON'T KNOW!!!! This is a harder question to answer because I write a lot of cute and happy fics but what makes it a happy ending is any of the suffering along the way!! So probably "It's Only Forever" (Magnus Archives)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? i published one smutty fic and every time someone interacts with it i get embarrassed so no, I do not, my ace ass can't handle it

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? I used to write crossovers! I realize how that they were all Johannes Cabal. The craziest was perhaps "Episode #*&%^: The Necromancer" in which August and I write a gender bent welcome to night vale episode in which Johannes Cabal winds up in Night Vale. They even did a recorded version of it!

If it is that trope of a bilingual person switching to another language because "teehee i forgot" or whatever that is don't do it ESPECIALLY if you yourself don't speak that language! I'm having war flashbacks to my time in the Voltron fandom. People still do it to the hispanic coded characters in Star Wars. Don't do it. If you the writer know how to speak/write this language and it is used because this is legit how a person speaks at home, sure. But you also have to consider: why are you writing this in another language, do you need to, is this out of place or in character? Most importantly: are you white? if you're white, just be safe and don't do it.

An odd request...

Well maybe not so odd. First, story time. About a month and a half ago, my two boys and Mr KDNFB were watching a world war 2 movie. I didn’t feel like watching, so I was busy with other stuff. At one point, there was a scene with shouting in German and no subtitles. My youngest asks, “What did they say?” I happened to be walking through the room, so I translated and kept going. It was a pretty easy phrase, something that sticks in your head if you’ve heard it enough and situational clues make it obvious. A few seconds later, I hear “Wait! Mom speaks German?!?!” This led to a discussion with the boys that yes, Mom used to be able to speak and understand passable German because I lived in Germany for four years. I went to an American school, on an American military base, but we lived off of the base. Hence, I could manage a conversation, but can’t read or write German worth shit. Oh and I was (WAS AS IN THE PAST) nearly fluent in French after four years of studying it in an American school. By fluent, I mean that I could read and write it fairly well. Speaking, not so much. I sounded like an American attempting to speak French and failing miserably at it. Miserably. Then I went to college and stopped speaking both because I had no one to talk to and didn’t take classes in them (dumb mistake).

So all of that story was to explain to my children that if you do not use a language, if you do not practice it, eventually you will forget it. Unless they’re shouting “Hands up! Come here now! Now!” In a movie. 😬

So. About a week after the “Mom speaks German?” incident, my youngest comes to me and tells me he wants to learn a second language. There are Spanish classes through the school here that we could sign him up for, and when I mentioned that as a possibility, he said, “No, I want to learn German. That way you and I can practice together.” I can’t say no to THAT!

It is free, and there is an ad-free version for a little extra. It is designed to help kids learn a second language. Note the flags at the top there. My youngest and I have been taking German lessons together for about a month now. A few weeks ago, I was messing around with the app and realized you could study more than one language at a time. Well of course I just had to add French for myself, and started taking my own lessons after little KDNFB #2 and I finished our German lessons every night.

A few days later, my oldest wanders in while I’m speaking in French and asks what I’m doing. I showed him, and he asks, “Can I learn Italian?” 🤪 Again... how do I refuse? I can’t. Now, I am searching bookseller sites for easy reading kids books in German and Italian that they already know the words to in English. “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” and “Green Eggs and Ham” are really great for this. And my keyboard options now look like this:

because all three of us have reached the point where we don’t just have to select the right words, we have to say them and spell them too.

The point! The point of this story is this. If any of my lovely followers or Anons are fluent in German, French, or especially in Italian because wow we are struggling with this one... If you are fluent in one or any of those languages, I am inviting you to start sending me asks and commenting on my fics in those languages, not in English. I am going to do my best to start answering in those languages, because as I told my kids, the best way to learn a language is to use it. If I want to be an effective teacher for my kids, I need to be ahead of them in the learning.

That being said, I do ask that we keep it fairly simple for a little while. Pretend I am a toddler and we are writing very basic letters, lol. I am not fluent in any of these languages anymore. I never was in the case of Italian and not really in German either, but my goal is to get as close to fluent as possible. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
