I’m not sure I truly understood confession until I became a mom. Sure, sure: admit your shortcomings to the sky daddy who already knows them. But, just after my son was born, I was holding him while reciting the confession and realization smacked me upside the head: it’s less about litanizing your misdeeds to some remote being, and more about admitting that you have fallen short of the mark to the person who is most precious to you (and, indeed, yourself) so that you can work to understand better.
