Painter Ryan Hewitt, @ryhew , spent his young adult life in Cape Town in a haze of drugs. Five years ago he woke up. That awakening saw his paintings sell like hotcakes, for £35,000, from London to New York. ⠀ "Most of my twenties are a blur. There are stages I painted in order to fuel my addictions. There was a stage when I couldn't even paint when I wasn't on a certain drug," says Hewitt clad in a paint spattered brown hoodie that looks like the a swatch. ⠀ "My clothes are like layers in my art closet. All the clothes that my wife buys for me ends up being painted at some point. That gets filtered through to a black bag a few years later. I've never done the apron thing. I've always found it cheesy. I used to hang on to my stuff. I had a pair of Italian shoes, that were more like a canvas. My dogs eventually chewed them. I used to put them in the studio, just to make me happy. This jersey has lasted a long time now," says Hewett. ⠀ Much like his jersey, Hewett's work is covered with thick brush strokes of oil paint. They are scraped and smeared to create images. Since 2013, he has brought to life the famous: Barack Obama Abraham Lincoln; Nelson Mandela; Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. ⠀ "I fight paintings.
