I’m getting real pick-me girl vibes from Mi-gyeong. She comes off as friendly and generous but when you look at her actions as a whole she’s really sus and manipulative. 

She definitely seems like the ultimate frenemy. Part of me thinks the reason she befriended Su-young was because she wanted to be part of the “pretty girl” clique. If people were going to compare the two, Mi-gyeong knows she will come out better because of her background. From her perspective she might think she is being genuine in having Su-yeong a friend but the way she is constantly but subtly reminding Su-yeong of her wealth is telling. 

Casually giving her a Dior bag  seems nice but someone with money should know that it can make the recipient feel bad. The most interesting thing was the painting. It feels as if she is saying, I can afford what you want easily but to me it’s only worth being in the bathroom. 

It was weird that she asked Su-yeong to ride with her to the mountain and then asked Sang-su to drive them both.

But I think she wants to remind Su-yeong’s that they are together because she thinks Sang-su is interested in her. She's too smart to be so oblivious to how awkward the people arond her are.

The most significant thing to me was when she was meeting with her mom at the bank.

Her mom told Mi-gyeong she was taking credit for Su-yeong’s work and she denied it. Mi-gyeong felt ownership over and entitled to take credit for the project. She only admitted this only privately to her mom because publicly she was very apologetic to Su-yeong. She wants to keep her nice girl image up.

Mi-gyeong seems genuine in her pursuit of Sang-su but she really pushes his boundaries and comes off as really needy and clingy. 

The timing of the selfie and subsequent kiss was deliberate. She knew two of their co-workers were coming back their way and chose that moment to take a selfie and kiss him. She wants their relationship exposed so he will feel pressured into staying with her and Su-yeong will always be reminded that they are together. 

I could be totally wrong about her character and part of me hopes I am.

But I sometimes wonder what the hell Su-yeong is talking about really.

Those writers didn't have mercy in their vocabulary.

Saksu loved so deeply, so steadily. (And I think this ought to be rewarded)

Su-yeong can and will BOLT!!

The last sentence in tonight's episode went something like "that was my last time seeing Su-yeong." And I'm torn between never watching the last episode so I can always remember them that way, remember that she promised to call him. I feel a little dumb because that long last glance felt a little like goodbye but there wasn't a forewarning?? Anxiety is an ocean tide rising and falling within me because what do you mean your last time??? Did he die in that bus?? Did Su-yeong push him away successfully??? Did he leave? Did she? Just what happened??? And why is this love so tortured:(???? Or did they just break up?? But can you if you weren't officially together?? And why is Jeong Hyeok looking for Su-yeong?? What's going on? Mi-gyeong already left. Can't it just be over now????

Or she changed her name? Maybe she just doesn't go by Su-yeong anymore. Ha Saksu don't you die on me!!! Actually, I think maybe I can get by if they both don't die. I'd be pissed off because I loved the character Saksu BUTTTT I'll make do. Just don't die!! Either one of you!!

Prognosis: She watches k-dramas.

I'm still watching but only because I want to see how it ends. I no longer love it or even like it. Interestingly, I lost interest in The Interest of Love towards the end.

I usually love antihero female leads but Ahn Su Yeong is just insufferably selfish.

Munyeong (It's Okay to Not be Okay) and Ms. Jang (Hotel del Luna) for example are both inherently mean and selfish to some extent, but both are far more lovable because they don't hide under goody-goody facades.

You don't want to be in the relationship anymore? Sure, then break up. Why invent a cheating incident that served no purpose at all.

You are leaving to heal yourself? Sure, good for you. How about telling the people you know will worry and look for you, aka say goodbye.

She does what she wants in a mean way, not because she's complicated! Not because she has fears and trauma and shit! Not because she's poor!

Because she is selfish.

Does only what she wants, justified by her own perspective of the situation, her own wish of a specific outcome, with no regard whatsoever to how these actions will affect people she *seems* to care for. Don't tell me it's her being self-destructive. She didn't just destroy her own sandcastle. She destroyed each sandcastle near hers.

Ha Sangsu the whiny loser better stop pining over her because she doesn't seem to love him, after all she's done to drive the point home that she doesn't actually care about his feelings.

He had a meeting with the very few member of the family that she trusted, including Im Mireu, Choi Mal-chin, and Ahn Ji-hoon to protect the family and Shiro's safety until the heir's recovery. Shiro's older brothers, Su-yeong and Su-man who manage the Seoul businesses also arrived to lead the funeral with their family leader and mother. They have no idea that Shiro is still alive... A wake will be held for three days to allow family members to pay their respects. An empty casket will then be buried in the family's ancestral cemetery in Japan.

I think the last few lines of the show explain why the show is called The Interest of Love. I'm not sure that Ahn Su-Yeong was actually in love with Sang-Su. Not in a healthy way anyway. I think she may have liked or loved that he pursued her pretty much no matter what she did. She probably needed and/or liked the constant expression of interest in her by being chased/pursued by someone who likes her. Sang-Su may have actually loved Su-Yeong but lacked self-love to walk away from someone who simply could not love him consistently and healthily. Or he too enjoyed chasing rather than actually being in love.

Artist Statement 작가 노트

In ancestral ceremonies, the food offered is commonly placed in front of the wall, while in the Donghak ritual ‘Hyanga Seolwi’ it should face those who perform it. Because the spirits of our ancestors live and breathe within us, the rice bowl is placed facing us. As a ritual, I created a ceremonial table for myself. The title of the work is taken from a poem by Jang Su-jin. Hongcheon-based dak paper doll artist Ahn Seol-yeong made the ancestral tablet (using my Tinder profile). The following is an excerpt from the journal I kept while working on the table. “Here in Hongcheon, I’m trying to get some self assurance. Every night, from 12 to 2pm, I sit in the studio and write my journal. Why? Because I’m assured that it’s okay to do things like that in Hongcheon. Listening to lectures on tourism and technology, I thought of returning to Tinder for the first time in a long while, to see if there are many soldiers in Hongcheon. There were none. I recently identified as a lesbian, so I downloaded the queer dating app Joy. But when looking at the pictures, I realized women are so difficult. A few days ago I prayed, at a temple with crows, and on the way down I saw a dead snake with its guts sticking out. Before I go to bed, I lick the sheets with my tongue. At night, the rooftop karaoke bar at Hongcheon Central Market echoes with the sound of sad men singing. The neon sign of Pink Plant, our studio, is pink and turns the whole rooftop into a red-light district. (September 8)”

기존의 제사는 향벽설위로서 위패가 벽 앞에 있다면 동학식 제사인 향아설위는 위패가 본인 쪽으로 가있다. 조상의 영혼은 살아있는 사람 속에 살아 숨쉬는 것이니 나를 향해 위패를 놓고 밥그릇을 놓으라는 뜻이다. 이 프로젝트에서 의식으로서 나를 위한 제사상을 만들었다. 작업의 제목은 장수진 시인의 시 제목에서 가져왔다. 홍천 닥종이 인형 안설영 작가님이 위패(나의 틴더 프로필)를 제작 해주셨다. 제사상을 만들며 기록했던 일기의 한 부분을 공유한다. “지금 이 곳 홍천에서는 어떤 확신을 가져보려 한다. 밤 12시부터 2시까지 작업실에 앉아 일기를 쓴다. 왜? 홍천에서는 이런 짓을 해도 된다는 확신이 든다. 투어리즘과 기술에 관한 강연을 들으며 생각이 든건, 정말 오랜만에 틴더를 돌려볼까, 홍천이니 군인이 많으려나 였다. 군인은 없었다. 최근에 레즈비언으로 정체화하였기에 퀴어 데이팅 어플 조이를 깔았지만 사진들을 보자니 여자들은 너무 어렵다. 며칠 전에는 까마귀가 있는 절에서 기도를 하고 내려오는 길에 내장이 튀어나와 죽어있는 뱀을 봤다. 자기 전에 침대 시트를 혀로 낼름 낼름 햝는다. 홍천 중앙시장의 옥상 노래방에서는 밤이 되면 구슬픈 아저씨의 노래가 울려퍼진다. 분홍공장 별관의 네온 간판은 분홍색인데, 밤에 보면 이 곳은 집창촌 같다. By bowing to oneself, rather than to one’s ancestors, ‘Hyanga Seolwi’, a unique ritual tracing back to the Donghak Peasant Movement, highlights the position of the subject today, rather than worshiping a history disconnected from the present. Unlike the dating platform Tinder, where profile images are tailored to instantly attract the attention of others, the work exposes the gap between image and actual person, but also connects the ghostly identity of modern people, who exist as images that are consumed or evaporate, with the world of death. 동학농민운동의 독특한 제사 방식인 ‘향아설위(向我設位)’는 조상이 아닌, 자신을 향해 절을 지냄으로써, 현재와 단절된 역사에 대한 숭배가 아닌, 현재로부터 역사를 거슬러 가는 방식을 취하며, 주체의 자리를 내세운다. 틴더라는 플랫폼에서 프로필은 자신을 즉각적으로 소개하며 상대의 관심을 끌어내는 효과에 초점을 맞춘다는 점에서, 작업은 조금 더 복잡해지는데, 곧 이미지와 실제의 사람과의 간극을 노출하는 한편, 소비되거나 증발되는 이미지로서 존재하는 현대인의 유령적인 정체성과 죽음의 세계를 또한 연결 짓는다. (김민관)
