Food for Thought: Were MiniMoni discussing Jungkook?

A lot of the fandom seems to think so. So, let’s talk about it.

TL;DR - Bon Voyage 4 Ep 5 Behind Cam: Someone likes Jimin and Namjoon uses interesting language, making people think the someone is a member

On Episode 5 of Bon Voyage 4 Behind Cam, Namjoon and Jimin can be heard having a conversation around the campfire. According to the captions, the conversation goes like this:

JM: 아니 뭐가 (ahnee mweogah)

NJ: 내가 말했잖아 너 좋아한다니까 (naega malhaejahnah. neo joahandanikka)

JM: 나 사랑하는 거 같아 지금 (na saranghaneun geo gatah jigum)

NJ: 쟤가 너 좋아한다니까 (jaega neo joahandanikka)

Assuming nothing had been misheard, a translation of this conversation goes as follows:

JM: No. What are-

NJ: I told you--[?] likes you.

JM: I think [it’s] love now.

NJ: I’m saying, [?] likes you.

**Note: the question marks are there because we don’t know who NJ’s talking about. 

What most makes this conversation interesting to me is just who are they talking about? The literal translation, not taking context into account, doesn’t really tell us much. But there’s a word that’s used that gives some insight, 쟤가 (jaega). Without the caption, there’s little way to know if Namjoon was saying “제가” (jehga), meaning “I” or “쟤가” meaning “that person.” But, because we have the caption, we know that he’s saying “쟤가”.

In Korean, there’s different types of “that” as well as different types of “that person.” 쟤 is used to describe a person who is near you, but not a superior/someone who deserves high respect. Generally, you would not use this towards sunbaes, ajummas, ajusshis, or anyone you’d refer to using an honorific title. You’d really only use this to refer to someone younger than you, close friends, and/or same-age friends who both you and the listener are close with. Thus, the likelihood that Namjoon is referring to a nearby crew member is minimal. And though it’s more literally “that child who is near me” it’s more similar, contextually, to “him/her (that is next to me).” The “person” in question can be of any gender.

The use of this word is fascinating in this context because it directly implies that they’re talking about someone at the camp set. This can be an off-screen crew member (which, again, is kind of unlikely), or another person on screen. 

But, let’s get to something slightly more interesting. Before I go on, I want to be clear that I’m not trying to say this means anything, I’m merely explaining the language nuance and exploring the options.

Okay, so going back to taking in context. There is additional context in this conversation that shows that Namjoon wasn’t really all the way here for this conversation. He uses the ~ㄴ/는다니까 ((n/neun)danikka) quotation ending, which is used to emphasize something you’ve already said. Namjoon’s use of this tells me a couple things:

He’s already said this to Jimin before and is having to repeat himself

He’s kind of annoyed that they’re still talking about this/having this conversation again

The nuance of using ~ㄴ/는다니까 to quote your sentence is that you’re kind of irritated that you have to keep saying the same thing. So, when Namjoon is saying “내가 말했잖아 너 좋아한다니까” and “쟤가 너 좋아한다니까,” he’s kind of saying something like “[I’ve already told you this] (?) likes you” and “[You’re not wanting to hear this but] (That person) likes you.” And the tone in which he says this contrasts Jimin’s tone as well, accentuating the effect. Jimin’s laughing and kind of giddy and Namjoon is more casual/speaking in his normal tone. Please don’t misunderstand this as something extremely negative. It could be playful. It’s just interesting that the way he said it indicated that this wasn’t the start of the conversation--that they had been speaking on it for awhile before we heard that part of it, and that he was just kind of wanting Jimin to accept it. It’s a bit like getting slightly impatient with your friend who keeps asking you if you think someone likes them or not. This is why the nuance is so interesting to me.

Anyway, I said all this to really say nothing at all substantive. It just struck me as interesting, regardless of whether or not you take the conversation light-heartedly, or you think Jimin was having a Taehyung moment where he just needed to be reassured of someone’s affections for him. It’s cool to see these differences between Korean and English and how they can set the tone of a conversation like this

“The songe is in Frensh,” Victor said, placing his hands on Yuuri’s arms.

Yuuri took a moment to adjust to Victor’s speech. They’d done this a few times before out of lighthearted interest, and taught each other bits and pieces of their own versions of English, and the other languages they spoke. But not while they’d had conversations that required deeper understanding.

“It semes mar plesant in that wees,” Victor added, giving him a reassuring smile. “Come, mee lohv. Dance with meh.”

Yuuri nodded and draped his arms over Victor’s shoulders, loosely clasping them behind his neck. Victor gripped his waist. “Saye som-thing. Ahnee-thing. Ee lohv to herr theh spehk as thoh did al thee leef err thoh com to meh.”

Yuuri realised he’d already been unconsciously withdrawing into that silent world of expressions and gestures which existed for when verbal communication wasn’t an option. “All right. Victor Nikiforov – Vitya – I missed you like hell for a week. And I’m glad we have this time together now. So sing to me. Dance with me. Make love with me.”

He smiled to see the bemusement on Victor’s face, but there seemed to be understanding too. “Avec grand plaisir.”        

Not fair, Yuuri wanted to say. He wondered how often Victor sprinkled bits of French or Russian into his speech. It was clear that the translator, while a necessity here, also had the disadvantage of masking the nuances of how people expressed themselves.

They began to move. It required no artistry, this kind of dancing; it was more like an embrace. But it was just what Yuuri had wanted. As they stepped slowly around the middle of the room, Victor looked down at him and sang a beautiful, haunting song, his soft vibrato lilting over the flowing notes. Mon chéri, mon cuer en vous remaint, it began. Yuuri didn’t understand anything apart from the first two words, but wasn’t going to interrupt Victor to ask. He was weaving a spell between the two of them, and Yuuri was willingly ensnared by it as they gazed at each other. The breath seemed to have left his body while shivers of pleasure ran through him.

I’m yours, Yuuri thought as they danced and Victor sang. I always will be. I found you here and I’m never letting you go. They slowly drifted to a standstill, and Yuuri closed his eyes as the final words to the song hung in the air: Comment que de vous me departe. Victor’s breath was on his cheek.

“It is a songe aboht hoh lohv remaines in the singeris hert, hoh-so-ever fer apart fra his lover he be,” Victor said softly. “It was writen having meend apon a woman, bot it is noght hard forto mene it of a man.” Then there was a little laugh. “Understandestou what Ee saye?”

“Yes,” Yuuri whispered…
