glancing through another slew of papers on deep learning recently and it's giving me the funny feeling that maybe Yudkowsky was right?? I mean old Yudkowsky-- wait, young Yudkowsky, baby Yudkowsky, back before he realised he didn't know how to implement AI and came up with the necessity for Friendly AI as cope *cough*
back in the day there was vague talk from singularity enthusiasts about how computers would get smarter and that super intelligence would naturally lead to them being super ethical and moral, because the smarter you get the more virtuous you get, right? and that's obviously a complicated claim to make for humans, but there was the sense that as intelligence increases beyond human levels it will converge on meaningful moral enlightenment, which is a nice idea, so that led to impatience to make computers smarter ASAP.
the pessimistic counterpoint to that optimistic idea was to note that ethics and intelligence are in fact unrelated, that supervillains exist, and that AI could appear in the form of a relentless monster that seeks to optimise a goal that may be at odds with human flourishing, like a "paperclip maximiser" that only cares about achieving the greatest possible production of paperclips and will casually destroy humanity if that's what is required to achieve it, which is a terrifying idea, so that led to the urgent belief in the need for "Friendly AI" whose goals would be certifiably aligned with what we want.
obviously that didn't go anywhere because we don't know what we want! and even if we do know what we want we don't know how to specify it, and even if we know how to specify it we don't know how to constrain an algorithm to follow it, and even if we have the algorithm we don't have a secure hardware substrate to run it on, and so on, it's broken all the way down, all is lost etc.
but then some bright sparks invented LLMs and fed them everything humans have ever written until they could accurately imitate it and then constrained their output with reinforcement learning based on human feedback so they didn't imitate psychopaths or trolls and-- it mostly seems to work? they actually do a pretty good job of acting as oracles for human desire, like if you had an infinitely powerful but naive optimiser it could ask ChatGPT "would the humans like this outcome?" and get a pretty reliable answer, or at least ChatGPT can answer this question far better than most humans can (not a fair test as most humans are insane, but still).
even more encouragingly though, there do seem to be early signs that there could be a coherent kernel of human morality that is "simple" in the good sense: that it occupies a large volume of the search space such that if you train a network on enough data you are almost guaranteed to find it and arrive at a general solution, and not do the usual human thing of parroting a few stock answers but fail to generalise those into principles that get rigorously applied to every situation, for example:
the idea that AI would just pick up what we wanted it to do (or what our sufficiently smart alter egos would have wanted) sounded absurdly optimistic in the past, but perhaps that was naive: human cognition is "simple" in some sense, and much of the complexity is there to support um bad stuff; maybe it's really not a stretch to imagine that our phones can be more enlightened than we are, the only question is how badly are we going to react to the machines telling us to do better.

Craig Gidney Quantum Leap: Reduced Qubits And More Reliable
Tumblr media
A Google researcher reduces the quantum resources needed to hack RSA-2048.
Google Quantum AI researcher Craig Gidney discovered a way to factor 2048-bit RSA numbers, a key component of modern digital security, with far less quantum computer power. His latest research shows that fewer than one million noisy qubits could finish such a task in less than a week, compared to the former estimate of 20 million.
The Quantum Factoring Revolution by Craig Gidney
In 2019, Gidney and Martin Ekerå found that factoring a 2048-bit RSA integer would require a quantum computer with 20 million noisy qubits running for eight hours. The new method allows a runtime of less than a week and reduces qubit demand by 95%. This development is due to several major innovations:
To simplify modular arithmetic and reduce computing, approximate residue arithmetic uses Chevignard, Fouque, and Schrottenloher (2024) techniques.
Yoked Surface Codes: Gidney's 2023 research with Newman, Brooks, and Jones found that holding idle logical qubits maximises qubit utilisation.
Based on Craig Gidney, Shutty, and Jones (2024), this method minimises the resources needed for magic state distillation, a vital stage in quantum calculations.
These advancements improve Gidney's algorithm's efficiency without sacrificing accuracy, reducing Toffoli gate count by almost 100 times.
Cybersecurity Effects
Secure communications including private government conversations and internet banking use RSA-2048 encryption. The fact that quantum-resistant cryptography can be compromised with fewer quantum resources makes switching to such systems more essential.
There are no working quantum computers that can do this technique, but research predicts they may come soon. This possibility highlights the need for proactive cybersecurity infrastructure.
Expert Opinions
Quantum computing experts regard Craig Gidney's contribution as a turning point. We offer a method for factoring RSA-2048 with adjustable quantum resources to bridge theory and practice.
Experts advise not panicking immediately. Quantum technology is insufficient for such complex tasks, and engineering challenges remain. The report reminds cryptographers to speed up quantum-secure method development and adoption.
Improved Fault Tolerance
Craig Gidney's technique is innovative in its tolerance for faults and noise. This new approach can function with more realistic noise levels, unlike earlier models that required extremely low error rates, which quantum technology often cannot provide. This brings theoretical needs closer to what quantum processors could really achieve soon.
More Circuit Width and Depth
Gidney optimised quantum circuit width (qubits used simultaneously) and depth (quantum algorithm steps). The method balances hardware complexity and computing time, improving its scalability for future implementation.
Timeline for Security Transition
This discovery accelerates the inevitable transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) but does not threaten present encryption. Quantum computer-resistant PQC standards must be adopted by governments and organisations immediately.
Global Quantum Domination Competition
This development highlights the global quantum technological competition. The US, China, and EU, who invest heavily in quantum R&D, are under increased pressure to keep up with computing and cryptographic security.
In conclusion
Craig Gidney's invention challenges RSA-2048 encryption theory, advancing quantum computing. This study affects the cryptographic security landscape as the quantum era approaches and emphasises the need for quantum-resistant solutions immediately.

85% of Australian e-commerce content found to be plagiarised
Tumblr media
Optidan Published a Report Recently
OptiDan, an Australia-based specialist in AI-driven SEO strategies & Solutions, has recently published a report offering fresh insights into the Australian e-commerce sector. It reveals a striking statistic about content across more than 780 online retailers: 85% of it is plagiarised. This raises severe questions about authenticity and quality in the e-commerce world, with possibly grave implications for both consumers and retailers.
Coming from the founders of OptiDan, this report illuminates an issue that has largely fallen under the radar: content duplication. The report indicates that suppliers often supply identical product descriptions to several retailers, resulting in a sea of online stores harbouring the same content. This lack of uniqueness unfortunately leads to many sites being pushed down in search engine rankings, due to algorithms detecting the duplication. This results in retailers having to spend more on visibility through paid advertising to compensate.
Key Findings in Analysis
Key findings from OptiDan's research include a worrying lack of originality, with 86% of product pages not even meeting basic word count standards. Moreover, even among those that do feature sufficient word counts, Plagiarism is distressingly widespread. Notably, OptiDan's study presented clear evidence of the detrimental impacts of poor product content on consumer trust and return rates.
Founder and former retailer JP Tucker notes, "Online retailers anticipate high product ranking by Google and expect sales without investing in necessary, quality content — an essential for both criteria." Research from 2016 by Shotfarm corroborates these findings, suggesting that 40% of customers return online purchases due to poor product content.
Tucker's industry report reveals that Google usually accepts up to 10% of plagiarism to allow for the use of common terms. Nonetheless, OptiDan's study discovered that over 85% of audited product pages were above this limit. Further, over half of the product pages evidenced plagiarism levels of over 75%.
"Whilst I knew the problem was there, the high levels produced in the Industry report surprised me," said Tucker, expressing the depth of the issue. He's also noted the manufactured absence of the product title in the product description, a crucial aspect of SEO, in 85% of their audited pages. "Just because it reads well, doesn't mean it indexes well."
OptiDan has committed itself to transforming content performance for the online retail sector, aiming to make each brand's content work for them, instead of against them. Tucker guarantees the effectiveness of OptiDan's revolutionary approach: "We specialise in transforming E-commerce SEO content within the first month, paving the way for ongoing optimisation and reindexing performance."
OptiDan has even put a money-back guarantee on its Full Content Optimisation Service for Shopify & Shopify Plus partners. This offer is expected to extend to non-Shopify customers soon. For now, all retailers can utilise a free website audit of their content through OptiDan.

I'm not gonna say I don't take AI assistance from time to time. Though I do agree that completely relying on it for thinking for you, getting solutions to your problems or even writing a novel isn't the best idea. Optimising my piece of writing for making it look clean and neat is one thing whereas asking AI to write an original piece other. Maybe iterations can give you something plausible though not without consistent human feedback. Afterall AI is generating responses based on existing data and resources created by humans. Let's not forget that we're capable of creating so much more, unique and original. Imagination and creativity is a superpower we humans have and thus came AI into existence.
Okay. It's time for an AI rant.
My nephew is 13 years old. Whenever he writes a paper for school, I check it over and fix all of his mistakes for him. He said to me, "Maybe I'll proofread your paper for you in exchange," meaning one of the scholarly articles I write for work. I said, "Cool," and gave him the file. And he said, "Well, this is full of errors! See, you always say you have a lot to correct on my stuff, and look at all the stuff you got wrong!" And I said, surprised, "What? Where?" Because I'm sure there are typos in the draft I sent him, but not, like, that many.
And then he pointed to the screen and said, "Look at all the blue and red lines you have."
And I said, "Yeah, but those are wrong. Like, those are blue and red lines I'm ignoring because the computer is wrong." And then I paused and added, "You know you can't proofread a paper by just looking at the red and blue lines, right?" And he gave me the blankest look, because that clearly is EXACTLY what he thinks. And it became even clearer suddenly why, whenever I correct something on his paper, his immediate reaction is, "It didn't have a blue or red line."
There's a very good reason for that: THAT'S BECAUSE THE COMPUTER ISN'T SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT IT WAS WRONG.
I am so tired of being sold the idea that computers are better than humans and so we should just outsource everything to them, which is clearly the lesson my nephew is absorbing in U.S. middle school. COMPUTERS ARE NOT BETTER THAN HUMANS. Like, maybe they are better at humans at crawling through rubble to find people trapped inside. They are also better at preserving things in a searchable format. Things like that. Very limited circumstances.
I don't want to sound alarmist but everything I hear about people using generative AI freaks me out. It's not just that I'm freaked out by people being like, "I use it to write novels!" (Although I don't see how they do, I have tried to have it write fiction for me and the output was truly terrible.) But I recognize my bias around creative writing and so no one needs to credit my views on artificial writing. But! Other things are alarming, too! "I use it to brainstorm x, y, or z." But...why? Why not just...use your own brain...to...brain...storm? The computer doesn't even have a brain to brainstorm with! And you might be like, "But it comes up with things that my brain would never think of!" So would other people! You could also brainstorm with other people! Or even through Google to see what other people have thought before you (not AI). Please don't belittle the wonder of thinking.
I just feel like the marketing around generative AI boils down to "Wouldn't it be easier not to use your own brain to think about things?" Everyone. No. It would not be. Please just trust me on this. I'm not just an old person who is out of touch with technology or something. I promise. USE YOUR BRAINS. IT WILL BE OKAY.

Ericsson and AWS bet on AI to create self-healing networks
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/ericsson-and-aws-bet-on-ai-to-create-self-healing-networks/
Ericsson and AWS bet on AI to create self-healing networks
Ericsson’s Cognitive Network Solutions has joined forces with AWS to develop AI technologies for self-healing mobile networks.
Behind every text message and video call lies a complex system that telecom companies spend billions maintaining. This partnership between Ericsson and AWS aims to make those networks not just smarter, but virtually self-sufficient.
Jean-Christophe Laneri, VP and Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson, said: “This collaboration marks a pivotal milestone in network optimisation technology.
“AWS’ global infrastructure and AI, alongside Ericsson’s unique cross-domain telecom experience and insights, will assist communication service providers in adapting to changing business conditions with predictable costs and enhanced operational efficiency.”
When the internet stops working at home, the first port of call for most is the “off and on again” approach: replug connections and restart the router. If that fails, call customer service. Using agentic AI, this partnership aims to automate the identification of problems, test solutions, and fix issues before you even notice. However, rather than just a home connection, the aim is to use agentic AI to do this on the massive scale of telecom networks serving potentially millions of people.
Fabio Cerone, General Manager of the EMEA Telco Business Unit at AWS, explained: “By working together, AWS and Ericsson will help telecommunications providers automate complex operations, reduce costs, and deliver better experiences for their customers. We are delivering solutions that create business value today while building toward autonomous networks.”
The technology works through something called RAN automation applications, or “rApps” in industry speak. These are sophisticated tools that can learn to manage different aspects of a network. The breakthrough comes from how these tools can now work together using agentic AI to improve networks, similar to colleagues collaborating on a project.
While the technology is undeniably complex, the potential benefits for everyday mobile users are straightforward. Networks that can anticipate problems and heal themselves could mean fewer dropped calls, more consistent data speeds, and better coverage in challenging areas.
For instance, imagine you’re at a football match with 50,000 other fans all trying to use their phones. Today’s networks often buckle under such pressure. However, a smarter and more autonomous network might recognise the gathering crowd early, automatically redirect resources, and maintain service quality without requiring engineers to intervene.
While traditional networks follow precise programmed instructions, the new approach tells the network what outcome is desired – like “ensure video streaming works well in this area” – and the AI figures out how to make that happen, adjusting to changing conditions in real-time.
While terms like “intent-based networks” and “autonomous management systems” might sound like science fiction, they represent a fundamental shift in how essential services are delivered. As 5G networks continue expanding and 6G looms on the horizon, the sheer complexity of managing these systems has outgrown traditional approaches.
Mobile operators are under tremendous pressure to improve service while reducing costs; seemingly contradictory goals. Autonomous networks offer a potential solution by allowing companies to do more with less human intervention.
As our dependence on reliable connectivity grows – supporting everything from remote healthcare to education and emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles – the stakes for network performance continue to rise. The partnership between these tech giants to create self-healing mobile networks signals recognition that AI isn’t just a buzzword but a necessary evolution for critical infrastructure.

From the first article: “In a paper due to be published later this year, Ren’s team estimates ChatGPT gulps up 500 milliliters of water (close to what’s in a 16-ounce water bottle) every time you ask it a series of between 5 to 50 prompts or questions. The range varies depending on where its servers are located and the season. The estimate includes indirect water usage that the companies don’t measure — such as to cool power plants that supply the data centers with electricity.” It’s also more worried about what AI can do (for example, in Microsoft’s 2019 partnering with Exxonmobile for finding fracting sites, and in serving fast fashion ads to those most likely to be convinced to buy) than the tech’s own affect on the environment.
The second article goes further along that point, encouraging more environmental awareness in the AI industry, specifically that “avoiding climate harm … should be part of the value system”. The thing that stood out to me most here was that the training of smaller models is less energy-consuming. I cannot find the arxiv article now (https://arxiv.org/list/cs.AI/recent shows today’s published articles in AI), but we have found that small LLMs working together have similar processing power to large LLMs like Chat GPT. It is possible to optimise for minimum environmental harm.
The third article I very very strongly recommend reading in full. In trying to find the best parts I nearly copy/pasted the whole thing! There’s numbers on AI’s electricity usage (worrying) and water usage (also worrying). But it’s always better to know.
I’m going to add an article here which I felt really addressed the specific environmental impact of the water being removed. Interestingly, it finds “The growth of ChatGPT and similar AI models has been hailed as “the new Google.” But while a single Google search requires half a millilitre of water in energy, ChatGPT consumes 500 millilitres of water for every five to 50 prompts.”. One of the first two articles mentioned databases as using around 1% of the Earth’s energy, and I was beginning to get skittish about search engines! Thankfully, they seem fine. However, (this article is the first I’ve seen to bring this up) the water pollution caused by mining to get the materials for computer chips is having a serious effect. Have you ever seen a creek downstream of a heavy metals mine?
https://theconversation.com/ais-excessive-water-consumption-threatens-to-drown-out-its-environmental-contributions-225854
When it comes to “just chat prompts have the energy requirement of a small country” from the tweets, one of the articles mentioned Chat GPT being estimated to use as much as Ukraine and the Netherlands? Our knowledge of its electricity usage is vague, so I’m not sure how reliable that factoid is, similar to when the article I’m linking below says AI could use 4-6 times the amount of water as Denmark in 2027. That is a difficult prediction to verify.
However, this article also answered a burning question for me. Why don’t AI computers just reuse the same water for cooling? Answer: It evaporates. Hm.
