ok hear me out reacting to discord messages with emojis essentially serves the same purpose as aizuchi (interjections that show the listener is paying attention or understands the speaker). if a friend is going on a spiel in discord DMs, reacting with emojis to successive messages can be a more efficient way of showing you're listening without interrupting the flow of messages by responding with "yeah" or "yep."

and then you have custom emojis that vary across servers which allow individual servers to develop their own emoji dialect. joining a new server and looking at its custom emojis scratches my linguist brain because immediately i think about when/where/how said custom emojis are used.

i also think about nitro discord users being able to spread server emoji dialects (but only to a limited extent because regular discord users can't save and use custom emojis outside of their original server). i've now been in a handful of interactions where i've had to ask about the etymology of certain custom emojis and the explanations i've received are always fascinating.

Aizuchi

Aizuchi, written 相槌 or あいづち, are interjections used during conversations to indicate that you're paying attention to the speaker.

ええ(fromal) はい (semi-formal) うん (informal) ああ (very informal)

meaning: yes - this doesn't automatically imply you agree with what the speaker is saying, but rather that you're listening and understand what they are saying

そうです / そうですよ

meaning: that's right - for confirming that the information said is correct

そうですね

meaning: I agree - for agreeing with the information in comment made by the speaker

そうなんです / そうなんですよ

meaning: yeah, right? (kind of like "co nie?" in an agreeing way) - used when the speaker said something you wanted to say as well

meaning: oh, I see - used for when the speaker says something you didn't know previously

не знаю, правда, зачем взяла What You are Looking For is in the Library Мичико Аоямы. просто хотела что-то быстро найти для почитать на ночь. сюжет - пять отдельных историй, рассказанных от лица пяти разных персонажей с тривиальными жизненными проблемами, каждый из которых по стечению обстоятельств оказывается в одной и той же библиотеке. местная библиотекарша, загадочная особа, на каждого бросает пронзительный взгляд, спрашивая: "Что вы ищете?" - и сразу становится понятно, что это она не про книги. в общем, очередная интерпретация "магазинчика желаний".

я не большой фанат "вдохновляющих" и "поучительных" историй. и начинаю понимать, что также не фанат читать японцев в переводе - хоть в русском, хоть в английском. в японском очень специфические диалоги (и aizuchi, и в целом особенности этикета), и переводчику надо реально постараться, чтобы участники не выглядели как два нейродивергента в переводе. когда читаешь на японском, ты как бы погружаешься в эту "японскость" и воспринимаешь всё в нужном контексте. но чтоб читать такие книги в оригинале, мне ещё учиться и учиться -_-
