jealousy, jealousy | kento nanami x reader
hi jules!! thank you so much :) i hope u like it <3
a/n: listen i have no idea why my brain went in this direction, but it's funny and fluffy. i guess. (cw: jealousy, gojo being a pain in the ass, private relationship)
participate on my milestone event
Tumblr media
Kento Nanami had a problem – a tough one, one might say.
The blond definitely didn’t want to feel this way, however he could feel a tiny ugly, hairy monster of jealousy crawling inside his chest. He ran a calloused palm through his hair – now messy from the distress of a mission – watching as Satoru Gojo towered over his apprentice: you.
See, as someone who had quite a peculiar cursed technique as you, it was only natural Gojo would take you as his apprentice – only natural for him to spread his wings over you, and help you blossom into a more powerful sorcerer. Nevermind, it still made Nanami’s blood boil with jealousy.
You looked at Gojo with admiration – or, perhaps, hearts for eyes – as he praised your work as a sorcerer. Rationally speaking, Kento was well aware the white haired sorcerer wouldn’t go as far as to actively flirt with you, however your sweet voice thanking him left a bitter aftertaste on his tongue.
“Nice job, Nanami.” You praised him, with doe eyes and a sweet smile on your lips. There was an itty bitty cut on your forehead, and it didn’t seem to bother you at all. Your hair was all over the place, your clothes were dirty, and you looked more beautiful than ever.
His lips curled, blossoming into a smile – or something close to it.
“You too.” He suggested, looking for something else to say, anything to keep the conversation going, to keep hearing your sweet voice. He couldn’t come up with anything, so you went on your way.
He watched you until your silhouette disappeared on the horizon.
-
“You know,” You start, giggling as soft lips pressed over your neck. “the whole deal of a private relationship is that we’re secret. You almost gave yourself away… thought you were gonna stab Gojo with your eyes.”
Nanami’s hazel eyes find yours for a moment, however his look didn’t hold any harsh emotions.
“Do not say another man’s name when I’m kissing you.”
You laugh, an open mouthed cackle as you realize what this is all about. Kento always felt like an open book to you, so easy to read. Naturally, his childish jealousy wouldn’t be any different.
“Kento!” You exclaim your lover’s name as he gently tickles your ribs, in order to hear your sweet laugh again. His fingertips dance underneath your sweater, drawing figure eights on your warm skin. “I’m being serious right now, don’t you dare disarm me like this.”
His lips find their way towards your jawline, pressing soft kisses.
“I’m yours.” You whisper, softly, and his attention is back at you. “You don’t have to worry about anyone else. Especially Satoru Gojo, of all people. He can be a little annoying.”
It’s his turn to laugh, and your heart warms at the beautiful sound.
“A little?”
-
"Nanamin!"
Kento almost winces at the sound, still refusing to turn around from the colorful vending machine that stands before him. He pretends he didn’t hear Gojo, faking a mental battle between orange soda or strawberry milk. It wasn’t too convincing, apparently, because the six eyes heir called his name again.
“What.” Kento murmurs, still not removing his gaze from overly priced products.
“I know who you like.”
The blond freezes at the childish provocation. What kind of sentence even is that?
“I like her too, you know.”
Nanami turns around, feeling his blood boil again. Forget about orange soda: he has a bigger problem to deal with now. Satoru stares back at him, through thick sunglasses, and a teasing smirk blossoming on his lips.
“Just kidding! Jeez, Nanamin, you have no sense of humour.” Gojo holds his hands in the air, as if in surrender. “Maybe, if you weren’t so serious, you could actually have a chance with her. I think she has a thing for you.”
Kento holds back a laugh.
“Do you?”
“Yeah, totally! She seems hella into you, from what I’ve seen. And don’t worry about me, I fall in love just a little bit everyday, always with someone new. You can have her if you want.”
Kento huffs out loud.
“Thanks, Satoru. I guess.”

Week 2: Seven Samurai -Yanissa Agbigay
The movie I chose for this week is called Seven Samurai, directed by Akira Kurosawa. This 1954 film has a 4.8 overall rating and has a handful of viewers who enjoyed this film. Some even commented saying that they feel this movie is a legendary classic, that is influential and unforgettable, while others out there don’t agree and think the movie is quite lengthy while having poor quality. For myself, I would have to agree that this movie was very well made and has a very authentic feel to it. I too enjoyed watching this film and seeing how determined the six villagers were in protecting their own people and village. I decided to watch this film because it reminded me of my childhood, spending time watching older classic movies with my dad. The movie captures a struggling village of farmers who are being forced to give up all their food to bandits giving these villagers the reason to end their lives. Now, the hope for this village is that they will find a samurai who will train 6 men amongst the villagers, to protect their village from the bandits. Luckily for them, they were able to find a veteran samurai who would then help fight the bandits off along with the other men. This man is to be called Kambei Shimada. Kambei was first seen shaving his whole head in front of the villagers, which is an important scene because he was portraying a monk with intent to save a little boy from a thief who snuck in. We can then see that his plan worked and was able to save this young innocent boy, with no injuries to anyone except for the thief himself.

youtube
When Kurosawa directed this movie, their costing budget was around ¥210 million, equaling to $580,000 in USD. Other numbers involving this film were within its releases. Starting off with the domestic release which was $318,649. With the international release they were able to make $27,609 and lastly their worldwide release made about $346,258. Again, I would like to say that this film is quite a success and has lots of viewers who keep coming back to watch.
I would also like to share some historical events that has happened within the movie’s first release in 1954. They include the ruling of the Supreme Court rules on Brown v. Board of Education, stating that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. In this milestone decision, the Supreme Court ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional. It signaled the end of legalized racial segregation in the schools of the United States, overruling the "separate but equal" principle set forth in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case. Along with the first Indo-China war ending, which ended with the French defeat at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and French withdrawal from Vietnam after the Geneva Accords. There are many other historical events that happened within the year Seven Samurai was released, but these are the two I decided to choose.
The style of the film is known as Hollywood action. Not only did Kurosawa create a legendary film but he didn’t have a normal plot between the characters. For example, Good Vs. Evil. When watching, We can learn in this movie that some of towns villagers also preyed on class samurai’s but ended up on the other side of things and now have to seek help from a samurai.
This film is such an incredible work of art and is still such a classic, with many viewers who appear to also agree. Overall, this film reflected time and effort on Kurosawa’s part and has shown us a reality of poor villagers and their experiences. As well as, how skilled and trained samurai’s are and must be.

Akira sighs in content as he stares at you from below with a soft smile on his face. You were staring mindlessly, mind in a dream-state. He chuckled, raising his hand to poke your chin underneath. You snapped out of your daydream to look at him.
“What’re you thinking of?” Akira asked softly, letting his hand rest in his chest. You hummed while smiling slightly. “Nothing much. Just wanting this moment to last longer..” you said in a quiet tone. Akira stares at you before closing his eyes. “I know I won’t be here any longer, but we can still text and call each other.” “It won’t be the same though..”
Akira didn’t answer as you sighed. Your hand subconsciously decided to play with his hair, which made your eyes widened in amazement. “Your hair is so soft..” you mumbled in amazement as you continued to play with his licorice-curly locks.
Akira chuckled at your tone, you are really adorable.. “If you want to continue to play with it, be my guest.” He said, with his eyes still closed. You didn’t reply or heard him, still busy playing with his hair. This made Akira relax for the first time for the past few weeks, how he manage to do his student duties along with Phantom Thieves duties, he doesn’t know but he manage.
He feels himself slipping into slumber and he lets it succumb him entirely. By the time you realized it, he was fast asleep in your lap. You giggled, your hand still playing with his hair. “Sleep well, my Joker.” You whispered.

Writer Spotlight: Mikauzoran
Tumblr media
The Miraculous Fanworks Discord server is introducing the creator spotlight! Each month, one artist and one writer will have their accounts and content promoted on our social media accounts. This month's writer of the month is Mikauzoran! See the artist of the month post here! Mikauzoran is a fantastic fanfiction writer! She has written for multiple server events, zines, and more. We've interviewed Mikau about her writing, history, advice, and thoughts about the show! 1. How long have you been writing in general?
I started writing short stories almost as soon as I learned how to write, and, before that, I told anyone who would listen the stories I came up with orally. I’ve been inventing stories for as long as I can remember, and my mum assures me that I was inventing stories even before that too. I first started writing novels when I was around ten or twelve, and I completed my first one at fifteen. I’ve written several more (original fiction and fanfiction) since then, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
2. How long have you been creating for the fandom, and what's your favorite part of the process?
I started writing The Rejects Club in December 2018, and I published the first chapter on January 11, 2019. This January will be my three-year anniversary of publishing content in this fandom. I’m considering holding a prompt giveaway event because three is one of my lucky numbers, and it seems like an appropriate milestone to celebrate. I think my favourite part of the process is the ideas stage. I love when the new ideas start flooding in and all I have to do is take notes on whatever napkin or scrap of paper is at hand. Things get a little harder when I have to sit down and iron things out and make everything work as a cohesive whole. That part of the process in and of itself is very rewarding, but the initial stage of the project when I’m filled with enthusiasm and inspiration for a new idea is the most fun.
3. Has there been anything in particular that influences your style?
I would say that the biggest influence on my writing is what I read. My mum always read to me as a child, so I grew up on the classics. Consequently, I developed a love for and still read a lot of old books. My favourites are French and English novels from the eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. Alexandre Dumas (Père), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lewis Carroll, Charlotte Brontë, Gaston Leroux, Victor Hugo, Jane Austen, George Eliot, and Maurice Leblanc have all been big influences on me. Shoutout to H.P. Lovecraft and Sir Terry Pratchett. I hope to one day write as beautifully as Lovecraft and with Pratchett’s wit. If I could trade my own style for anyone’s, it would be those two.
4. Do you have any advice you'd like to give to other creators?
Read voraciously. When you come across a new word, look it up. When you read a description or piece of dialogue and think, “Wow. That’s really good”, write it down in a little notebook and then use those notes later when you’re writing to get inspiration for how to phrase things. Don’t lift it word for word because then it won’t sound like you, but figure out how to say something similar in your own voice. The filmmaker Kurosawa Akira once said that when you read, you should do it at a desk with a notebook at hand. Analyze what you read and see what you can learn from it. My other piece of advice is to use everything. Everything bad that’s ever happened to you. Your greatest joys. Your failures. Your fears. Your regrets. Your victories. Your heartbreaks. That horrible meal you had at that greasy restaurant with abysmal service. That bright red leaf that drifted down and landed on your head. That time you played basketball in the pouring rain. That song that’s stuck in your head. That painting that moved you to tears. That terrible movie you saw the other day. Use everything from your life in your stories. It will make them feel more real…because it is real.
5. How do you think the identity reveal is going to go? Feel free to write something quick if you want to!
In canon, it will probably be a dumpster fire, honestly. I anticipate drama and multiple timelines and Marinette losing her memories at some point before the identity reveal finally sticks. I’m sure it will be a rollercoaster. What I really want, though, is something calm and fluffy. I want Ladybug to realize that her partner is struggling and needs her support, and then I want her to say “forget the rules. I need to be there for him”. I’ve written several stories like that such as Everything, I’m Learning to Love (Walking Away from Things), Behind the Masks, and Depressing Christmas Carols with Chat Noir.
Mikau can be found here on Tumblr @mikauzoran and on AO3 under the name Mikauzoran. Some of her works include I'm Learning to Love (Walking Away from Things), Your Hands Hold Home, and Drunk Ladybug on My Balcony? Yeah. This is Fine. Go check them out! Interested in being featured? NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022: Loads of Legends Appear For Celebratory Extravaganza; Kota Ibushi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan Out of Anniversary and New Japan Cup
Tumblr media
New Japan Pro Wrestling
Today was the 50th Anniversary event for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Although the actual date of the debut show was 3/6/1972, it’s not always strictly observed on that day. Nevertheless, it’s a long time for a pro wrestling company to be around (and it won’t be the only Japanese company observing that milestone, as All Japan Pro Wrestling is 50 this year as well). Through three ownerships and countless changing winds for the business, NJPW has weathered the storms, even during periods where it did not look like they would. Congratulations to them.
It was announced yesterday that neither Kota Ibushi nor Hiroyoshi Tenzan would be on this show, or in the New Japan Cup after all. Tenzan’s knee injury is still bothering him so that will pull him out. With that, the winner of Toru Yano v. Taichi will get a bye into the third round on forfeit. With Ibushi, it seemed like he was going to make it, but ultimately it was determined he would not be as fit as he should be given the nature of his injury. Ibushi is 39, he is not getting any younger. We may be seeing a decline in his ability to wrestle regularly at this stage, however as this show will prove, there are those far older who are still giving it a go. Great O-Khan now gets a forfeit win into the 2nd round, to face Taiji Ishimori. The fourth match on this show was changed as well, with Young Lions Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita stepping in.
Prior to the opening match, long time veteran NJPW ring announcer Hidekazu “Kero” Tanaka brought out a Who’s Who of former NJPW stars and legends. Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono, Tatsumi Fujinami, Seiji Sakaguchi, Norio Honaga (who would be a special referee during the 6th match), Akira Maeda (!!!), Jushin Thunder Liger, Kuniaki Kobayashi, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Kazuo Yamazaki, Wataru Inoue, Tiger Hattori, Shiro Koshinaka, Kengo Kimura, Riki Choshu, Milano Collection AT, Minoru Tanaka, Masahito Kakihara and Motoyuki Kitazawa were all in the ring, along with Kazuchika Okada. The original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama, gave a video message as he is not in good health to be appearing live (and neither is NJPW’s founder Antonio Inoki). Seiji Sakaguchi and Kazuchika Okada then gave short little statements, with Okada saying how nervous he was to be part of this historic event.
NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan (NJPWWorld)
EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi & SHO [Bullet Club] d. Tiger Mask IV, YOH [CHAOS] & Ryohei Oiwa (Yujiro > Oiwa, Pimp Juice, 6:35)
Bad Luck Fale, Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. Taichi [SZKG], TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] & Minoru Tanaka [GLEAT] (ELP > TAKA, Thunderkiss ‘86, 9:50)
CIMA, El Lindaman & T-Hawk [#STRONGHEARTS] d. El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI [SZKG] (CIMA > DOUKI, Meteora, 9:22)
Will Ospreay, Great O-Khan, Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare [United Empire] d. Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita (O-Khan > Fujita, Eliminator, 9:20)
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS], Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Shiro Koshinaka [FREE] (Shingo > Honma, Last Of The Dragon, 12:38)
Champion v. Champion Tag Match: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato (Goto > Taguchi, Shoto, 15:04)
NJPW 50th Anniversary Match: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS], Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tatsumi Fujinami [Dradition] d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG], Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] (Okada > Suzuki, Rainmaker, 18:12)
The babyfaces win the main, with Fujinami closing out the show with an “Ichi, Ni, San, DAAAA!” in tribute to Inoki. Okada and Tanahashi gave their own tributes to Inoki and the future of NJPW as well. Fujiwara and Suzuki kinda got each others’ goat through the match as well, with Fujiwara still trying to act as Suzuki’s trainer. Bishomon defeat Team Six or Nine in the annual Heavy v. Junior match, and it was a fun match, showing the triumph of four guys on the roster who’ve been seen as chronic underachievers or joke wrestlers.
GLEAT and #STRONGHEARTS showed out big on this show, with a tease of a singles match between Els Desperado and Lindaman, both champions in their companies.
Overall this was what the Anniversary show is supposed to do, make you feel good about NJPW and pro wrestling, with a lot of teases coming for the New Japan Cup 2022 tournament that starts tomorrow. I won’t be posting about it until Thursday, mind, but I think we’ll all be OK for it.
Tomorrow’s card:
New Japan Cup 2022
All shows on NJPWWorld
- 3/2/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: CIMA [#STRONGHEARTS] v. TAKA Michinoku [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tomoaki Honma v. YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Yuji Nagata v. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Togi Makabe v. Jeff Cobb [United Empire]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Toru Yano [CHAOS] v. Taichi [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Hiroshi Tanahashi v. YOH [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] v. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] v. El Desperado [SZKG]
While we are celebrating anniversaries, it’s also the 19th anniversary of Kenta Kobashi defeating Mitsuharu Misawa, at last, for a title, which was the beginning of one of the greatest title runs ever, Kobashi’s lone, 13-defense reign of the GHC Heavyweight title. Next year is the 20th anniversary for that; I will mark my calendar now to do a longer-form piece about it at some point.
That’s really it for today. WAVE ran today as well. Tokyo Joshi held a show at a swimming pool with one match yesterday so I don’t think I really need to get into that one.
Be back Thursday, which promises a new unit reveal in Dragon Gate.

I’ma dust off my film blog for a rant real quick.
One of my favorite things is when classic movies are re-released in theaters, be it through Fathom Events or the small repertory theaters like the Artcraft in Franklin, IN (where I was lucky enough to see Akira in 35mm over the weekend. It’s paradise, to say the least). These screenings are a fantastic way to introduce classics to new audiences or for folks like myself to see an old favorite on the big screen. Seeing 2001 in IMAX last year was a religious experience, and one I recommend immensely.
That brings us to this quoted tweet, in which a repertory theater in Toronto announces that they can no longer show films by 20th Century Fox because of Disney’s policies on revival screenings. Because of this, films like the Alien series, Home Alone, Die Hard, Phantom of the Paradise, and many other classics in the Fox catalogue may not be allowed to be shown in theaters because, and I can’t make this shit up, Disney is afraid they’ll cut into the profits of their first-run films. I don’t think I need to stress how ridiculous this is.
Sure, there are exceptions for non-profits, festivals, schools, and Fathom Events, as well as screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (which, let’s face it, if the Mouse ever fucks with my Rocky Horror, I’m going to have to have some words with them...), but that doesn’t change how messed up this is. On top of all this, Disney has announced that none of the films on Disney+ will have a rating above PG-13. Again, no Die Hard, no Pulp Fiction, no Alien, no Phantom of the Paradise.
Now, the word “censorship” is tossed around quite lackadaisically these days, but honestly? That’s what this is starting to look like. Disney is trying to control what you can watch and how you can watch it, and WE’RE LETTING IT HAPPEN. So many milestones of cinematic history are in danger of being locked away and unless they can make any money off of them, Disney doesn’t care what happens to them. As much of an advocate for physical media as I am, a lot of these movies are pretty hard to find (have you seen a copy of Phantom of the Paradise at your local Coconuts lately?), and a lot of them are out of print. Something needs to be done, and it needs to be done now. Our cultural heritage is at stake.

The History of Anime and Manga in Brazil
If you were to guess the country that has some of the longest history with Japan and Japanese culture, you might guess the United States, but you’d be wrong. One of the oldest relationships between Japan and Western countries actually falls to Brazil, home to one of the most vibrant and active anime and manga fandoms in the world. But how did that come about, and what lead to the rise of anime in Brazil? The story of anime in Brazil is one that spans over a hundred years of international relationships, immigration, and even rocky hardships that could have halted all of this from ever happening! Anime has been a medium that has recently exploded across the globe and become more and more available, but some of the oldest fans around the world reside south of the equator in Brazil; today, we’ll be taking a look at how that all came about, some shocking and interesting facts about Japan and Brazil’s relationship, and how anime culture there has changed in recent years.
The relationship between Brazil and Japan began in 1543, when Portuguese explorers happened upon Japan and, at a time when Japan largely distrusted outsiders,, managed to set up a working relationship of trade between the two countries along with the Dutch. These relationships progressed to the point that the city of Nagasaki became a hub of international trade and interaction between the two countries, with Portuguese traders even holding certain political sway within the city. Although this relationship eventually ended, when Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in 1822, Japan founded official international relations with the country in 1897, looking to establish what was then called the “Treaty of Friendship” between the two countries. This saw the beginning of some of the first arrivals of Japanese immigrants to Brazil.
Sadly, WWII caused much strife and conflict between the two nations, as Brazil siding with the Allies ended diplomatic relations, and many Japanese-Brazilians faced harsh punishments and discrimination during and after the war. By 1953, however, things started to return to a beneficial relationship again, and even more Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in the next few decades. Today, Brazil is the second largest home of Japanese people outside of Japan itself! Although Japanese-Brazilians had faced discrimination and hardships in the past, they are currently one of the most vibrant and flourishing immigrant populations in Brazil and abroad, maintaining their unique cultural identity between the two nations.
In many cases, these Japanese-Brazilians were responsible for some of the first crossovers of anime culture to Brazil. In 1964, Minami Keizi was the first artist to make comics in the manga style with his piece, Tupãzinho, o Guri Atomico, inspired by the iconic Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy. The most famous of Keizi’s works was Álbum Encantado, a work that depicted illustrated stories in a manga-inspired style. Several other artists started to experiment and expand their work in the style of manga, one of them being Claudio Seto, who went on to become incredibly famous and being thought as the greatest creator of Brazilian manga with works like O Samurai. Seto, along with Keizi, are considered the forerunners of manga in Brazil, often being cited as inspirations for national authors!
In 1972, a huge milestone in Brazilian animation was made possible by a Japanese cartoonist named Ypê Nakashima, who brought the feature film, Piconzé, to the masses. It was the first ever color animation film produced in Brazil, winning a Golden Owl award from the National Cinema Institute! Piconzé drew on Nakashima’s knowledge of Japanese and Brazilian folklore to create a unique and interesting tale. Before he immigrated to Brazil from Japan in 1956, he used to work on newspapers like Mainichi Shimbun and other publications, and continued to do so in Brazil before working on the film. Ype’s son, Itsuo Nakashima, not only also worked on Piconzé with his father, but would also go on to work on two animated features starring Brazilian cartoon and comic giant Turma da Mônica.
In 1984, in order to promote the growth of anime and manga, ABRADEMI (The Brazilian Association of Manga and Illustration Artists) was founded. Along with publishing their bi-monthly newsletter and two anime-themed magazines called Clube do Manga and Qnadrix, ABRADEMI provided activities, courses, speeches, videos and exhibits linked to Japanese history and culture, as they seek to heighten anime and manga as a true expression of art and culture. ABRADEMI is one of the first groups to help pave the way for the introduction of anime and manga to a larger audience in Brazil, attracting the attention of the God of Manga himself, Osamu Tezuka!
At the 1984 Sao Paulo Art Museums Exhibit of Comics, Osamu Tezuka gave an unforgettable speech that they hosted happened to be the one where they brought the legendary Osamu Tezuka to speak at on behalf of ABRADEMI! Tezuka’s visit to ABRADEMI was unique, and allowed him to even meet up with Mauricio de Sousa, creator of Turma da Mônica; Mauricio and Tezuka must have left a great impression of friendship and respect, because in 2012 Sousa included Astro Boy, Sapphire, Kimba, and Rock Holmes in his Monica Teen book, under the direct guidance of Tezuka Productions, the first time ever anyone outside of Japan was officially allowed to include Tezuka characters in their own work! Another influential event was the exhibit for Sao Paulo’s Everest Video, which helped pave the way for the introduction of Rumiko Takahashi’s renowned anime series, Urusei Yatsura!
Although many Brazilian artists drew on manga as an influence for their own comics, actual manga and anime in Brazil took quite a while to get official releases. A manga marketing testing period began in 1988, with Cedibra leading the way by publishing Kazuo Koike’s Lone Wolf and Cub. Not to be outdone by Cedibra, Globo followed up by publishing Akira. Starting in 1990, with the thriving acknowledgement of Japanese cultural products, and the quality of the stories in manga form that were initially made as an experiment, allowed these works to be commercialized, which ensured the presence of manga in newsstands and book shops across the country! While manga mania slowed down a bit, the Pokémon boom of the 90s helped to reignite interest in the medium, with publications of Pokémon: The Electric Tale of Pikachu hitting stands.
In the late 1990s, anime and manga really started picking up interest, with the beloved Saint Seiya airing as Knights of the Zodiac leading the charge. Knights of the Zodiac was a massive success. Even today fans in much of Latin America and North America refer to it by name and remember growing up watching episodes of it! Saint Seiya’s success helped carve a path for future broadcasts of anime, like the shonen mega-hit, Dragon Ball! In 2000, due to the incredible fame of Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball, their respective manga were published and they were met with success! The rising popularity of manga made it possible for other series like One Piece, Slam Dunk, Neon Genesis Evangelion and many other titles to get official publications as well, with Conrad publishing even publishing works by Osamu Tezuka!
In 2004, book publisher Panini started publishing manga, with their initial titles being Peach Girl and Eden. But in 2012, they went all in by publishing two of the most known manga in Brazil: Naruto and Bleach! Panini would ride this success to publishing many other popular series, and even took over the rights to the One Piece anime and manga. Interestingly, manga used to be published in Brazil in 100 page chunks in smaller sizes to Japan’s original style, but these days manga is published in a much more “traditional” Japanese format of full-sized volumes; Panini even went through the trouble of republishing over 30 volumes of One Piece in the newer format!
In 2008, Brazilian-born Japanese illustrator and novelist Yuu Kamiya drew the illustrations Takaya Kagami’s light novel A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lies. He then went to creating, writing and illustrating his own light novel series, No Game No Life in 2013. It was such a huge hit that in 2014, it was listed as one of the top-selling light novels, and in that same year began its anime broadcast! Not only that, but No Game No Life was one of ten light novel series to get a Yomiuri Shimbun Sugoi Japan Award!
Following many years of negotiation, Japan Brazil Communication (JBC) was able to finally go through with their release of the Sailor Moon manga in 2014. Now that manga had found great success in Brazil, and a move to make pubilshing manga more in line with Japanese standards, JBC set out to create an amazing rendition of the series for Brazilian readers. JBC’s edition of the manga was the company’s most vital release, and was so well done that it was praised by Sailor Moon’s creator, Naoko Takeuchi and Kodansha employees for its quality!
And finally, in 2012, Crunchyroll (that’s us!) started distributing anime simultaneously to Brazil. The service launched 30 of its titles with Portuguese language support, which included new simulcast titles. Just last year in 2018, Crunchyroll launched programming on linear TV in Brazil thanks to the partnership with Rede Brasil! Together, they started a specially-programmed anime hour, which included subtitled episodes of popular anime like Black Clover. To supplement it, there’s also some local programming from Crunchyroll’s Brazilian own community managers, where they dig into what’s new in the anime world.
Anime and manga is at its height of its popularity in Brazil right now, and it shows no signs of slowing down! It’s an amazing journey that spans the linked history of Japan and Brazil, with many Japanese-Brazilians helping to pave the way and introduce manga and manga aesthetics to Brazil’s own growing comics and animation industry. With visits from legends like Osamu Tezuka and larger and larger official publications of manga starting in the last few decades, Brazil’s choices for anime and manga have exploded with choice! It seems like anime and manga fans will have a lot to look forward to if these trends continue, and the history of anime in Brazil looks ready to roll on!
Have any memories of anime or manga from Brazil? What country’s history of anime and manga would you like to learn about next? Let us know in the comments!

Taika Waititi’s live-action Akira movie gets May 2021 release date
Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi’s next big-budget project, a live-action version of the beloved manga series Akira, finally has a release date, The Wrap reports: May 21st, 2021.
Warner Bros states that the live action adaptation of Akira will release on May 21st, 2021, Akira will have to go head to head with an untitled Marvel movie and John Wick 4.
Originally Akira featured a cast of Japanese Youths. For the remake Waititi states “Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent. Yeah, I’d probably want to take it a bit back more towards the books,”
The adaptation will be shot in California and early news suggests that the cast will include Brad Pitt. Apparently the film will be financed by Leonardo Decaprio’s studios.
I usually just go to the cinema to watch a movie. But you can’t recreate Akira with a cast that is entirely Caucasian. It’s not about race, well it kinda is... Chuck Norris just would not work playing the Green Hornet or re-cast as Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon. it’s primarily about originality. The quality and originality of a film is altered with the introduction of new elements. Its not the same film if the entire dynamic is changed.
Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo refers to political-social movements  relevant to Japan.
Katsuhiro  Ôtomo was inspired by what he saw in 1970s Tokyo. “There were so many interesting people… Student demonstrations, bikers, political movements, gangsters, homeless youth... All part of the Tokyo scene that surrounded me. In Akira, I projected these elements into the future, as science-fiction.” Ôtomo further drew on the 1960s zeitgeist. Akira’s climax takes place in an Olympic sports stadium, a potent Japanese symbol of reconstruction. The 1964 Olympics were a milestone for the post-War country, as this summer’s Beijing event has been for 21st century China.
It’s not like western audiences are unable to understand such subtle nuances in film. Hollywood does make films that lack originality...

Akira sighed when he felt you poking his sides. He tried focusing on his work but he couldn’t, your relentlessly poking him kept distracting him. He turn his head towards you with a glare on his face.
You stare at him with an innocent look on your face, which actually made Akira’s heart melt. His annoyance immediately washed away but he manage to keep his glare (at least trying to-). “I’m studying, [Y/N]. Stop poking me.” Akira said. “And you should also be studying.”
You pout. “That’s boring!” He sighed while rolling his eyes and returning to the book he’s studying. You waited for a sec before started to poke him. Akira groaned. “[Y/N].” “I’m not going to stop poking you until you give me some attention.” You whined as you continue to poke him.
He stared at you before his eyes lighting up. “Then let’s have a compromise.” You raise a brow at him, nodding your head for him to continue. “If you want, you can sit on my lap while I work. It’s a win-win right?” Akira suggested.
You thought about it first before nodding and standing up. Noticeably, his face lights up. He watch as you sat in his lap, facing in front of him. He holds your thighs as you got comfortable. Once you were, you let your head drop on his neck.
He chuckled when he felt your hair prickling his skin. “You know.. this isn’t too bad.” “Shut up, I can feel you poking me.” “That’s not my fault that you kept moving around in my lap.”

Intro
The Dragon Quest series has a long, abundant background, beginning with its influence on the early console RPG category, providing a turn-based theme and also style that would specify Japanese RPGs for several years to find. The franchise has actually reached its share of milestones, including its 30 year wedding anniversary, making it the longest-running JRPG franchise. Despite these success, the series still hasn’t dominated the Western market, never ever getting to the elevation of appeal as Square Enix’s various other significant buildings, such as Final Fantasy as well as Kingdom Hearts. Dragon Quest is such a cultural phenomenon in Japan that it introduces on weekends Kids don’t avoid college for it, was the initial video games collection to get live-action ballet adjustments, as well as also has a whole dining establishment dedicated to it called Luida’s Bar in Roppongi. While it will most likely never ever reach this degree of fanfare in North America, the group hasn’t quit on Dragon Quest making an impact right here and also the upcoming XI is Square Enix’s following opportunity to transform the trends.
The Ups and also Downs
Tumblr media
The Ups And Downs Dragon Quest hasn’t already had consistent showings in North America, with sales and also testimonial ratings rising and fall. At an early stage, Nintendo Power had a promo handing out duplicates cost-free duplicates of Dragon Warrior as a way to present American gamers to the series and also amass their passion in parlor games as a whole. PS1’s Dragon Quest VII, which was still under the Dragon Warrior branding due to hallmark concerns, was when points initially started moving in an extra positive direction. Square Enix proceeded to lure in Western gamers by including a PS2 trial for Final Fantasy XII with the acquisition of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (the very first video game to use the Dragon Quest name stateside) and also had shopping center trips to advertise the game.
The series started marketing better with the last couple of mainline access; Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies broke brand-new ground selling over 1 million copies between United States and also Europe. This was encouraging progression, but Square Enix had actually stopped publishing the remakes and spin-offs long prior to IX, with Nintendo grabbing the mantle considering that 2011 for the Dragon Quest VI remake as well as Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 spin-off. Neither company attempted to launch MMORPG Dragon Quest X stateside, though.
The reason the series has likewise been in limbo is most likely the moment financial investment and also expense of localization. Dragon Quest video games are extremely message hefty, and maker Yuji Horii invests a lot of his own time ensuring the translation is exactly how he planned it to be, right down to his father jokes. New entries have usually taken some time to make it to our shores since of this. “It has a drawback in that means,” states produce manufacturer Yuu Miyake. “It’s actually the speed of localization; it takes a long period of time due to just how the video game is and also the text by Mr. Horii is a really essential part of the game and also allures to the fans. Clearly, we have to look at making that process much shorter and much more efficient.”
Miyake shares a price quote of Dragon Quest VII’s message count, which was 1.2 million Japanese personalities as well as claims XI is simply over double that with 2.4 million. “For the high quality of the translation, the translators really have to comprehend the globe itself as well as get it perfect,” Miyake says. “We really do make certain to include the accents of the individuals worldwide to make it benefit each private area.”
Dragon Quest XI will certainly be the first mainline entry published by Square Enix considering that VIII in North America. Why the adjustment of heart for a series without a terrific performance history along with a laborious job of centering a game loaded with content that lasts gamers anywhere from 80-120 hours? A different market and even more preparation job by Square Enix to reestablish the Dragon Quest name in North America is offering the collection much better odds than it’s ever before had before.
Leading Up To XI
Tumblr media
Leading Up To XI It’s completely feasible that Dragon Quest faces the exact same destiny it always has in North America, continuouslying cultivate a specific niche but dedicated fanbase but never ever making a dash with the larger target market. This time things might transform with numerous aforementioned variables altering the having fun field. Talking with the development group in the ramp up to XI’s launch has actually revealed me a positive as well as hopeful perspective concerning the series’future in the West. The designers honestly look at this as a brand-new beginning for the franchise business– a possibility to appeal
to a new, contemporary audience alongside its diehard followers. The last couple of years have actually been spent slowly reestablishing the Dragon Quest brand to Western players, with Square Enix publishing mobile ports of earlier entrances and spin-off video games such as Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Builders. It aids that Nintendo has actually continuouslied bring over the remakes, such as the much wanted VII and VIII for the 3DS.
To its advantage, the RPG market is additionally completely different than when Dragon Quest VIII introduced on PS2; it’s not virtually as affordable and also handhelds ended up being a less costly alternative as development expenses climbed. The amount of JRPGs on the PS2 was large to the factor where it was an instance of quantity over top quality, making it simple for any kind of video game without a heavyweight to get lost in the shuffle. We don’t have JRPGs debuting at nearly that rate currently, making lots of gamers ache for the style to prosper once more. Square Enix has actually absolutely caught on to this, introducing games like Star Ocean V and I am Setsuna that feed our nostalgia for beloved series and RPG layout. It helps that a marketing point is additionally it’s a mainline Dragon Quest game on residence console, which we haven’t seen in over a decade. Inning accordance with the group, Horii was adamant about bringing the series back to the cinema. That being said, the group is completely familiar with where Dragon Quest presently stands in North America and also intends to changes it relevance with XI’s release. “From our perspective, [the collection is] still is not where it requires to be [in the West],” Miyake claims.
Staying True To The Series
Tumblr media
Staying True To The Series In several means, Dragon Quest XI is an event of the long-running franchise business, a conclusion of every little thing the series has actually been building toward. It was crafted with lots of callbacks as its programmers stuffed as much as possible from the collection’ history into one video game for the 30th anniversary. “Something that’s unique is you have the exact same 3 individuals, this dream group of the music from [Koichi] Sugiyama, [Yuji] Horri’s tale writing, and [Akira] Toriyama’s art design. It’s been the same men making the video games for over 32 years as well as that they could keep raising the motivation to earn these video games over this [long] duration,” Miyake states.
While movie critics have stated the entrances do not make drastic changes or developments from one video game to the following, the creators fit adequate to allow Dragon Quest welcome its simplicity and the technicians that made it such a vital as well as prominent series in RPG background. The core viewpoint has always been that any person could grab and also play a Dragon Quest game, making it appeal to a vast array of players. With those worths in mind, do not expect it to stray from its origins or shake up its formula like Final Fantasy XV did. It likewise does not suggest deserting its turn-based fight system or silent lead character either. The latter is something Horii is determined concerning maintaining. “The entire idea is that the gamer, themselves, ends up being the protagonist, becomes the hero,” Miyake discusses. “If we have actually a composed line and the player believes they would not say that, it breaks the immersion there.” After changing the series’ presentation with VIII, having a main game on portable, and creating an MMORPG, Dragon Quest XI is even more of a homecoming. “It’s returning to its roots in a great deal of ways, which makes it really feel fresh for us also,” Miyake states. “It’s got a specific degree of fond memories regarding it that I believe individuals are trying to find in video games,” includes manufacturer Hokuto Okamato,
The collection wishes to retain its traditional gameplay, and also the huge lure this time about was simply developing an entry using the technological developments of the equipment to upgrade the graphics and provide a much more practical globe. “We put in beast environments, upped the amount of enemies you discover on the field, as well as the ways the villages connect and relocate,” Miyake says. Dragon Quest XI introduces on September 4 for PS4 and also COMPUTER, with a Switch variation coming at a later day. Possibly the tale is moving as well as Dragon Quest XI will be the game-changer for the franchise business’s appeal in North America. As a longtime fan of the series, I know I’m rooting for XI, wishing it establishes a new high bar for the franchise as well as confirms that these niche experiences still have worth.
