Dur-Dur Band Int. - The Berlin Session - return (after decades) of a top Somali band

The first studio album of its kind since the golden days of Mogadishu came to a halt three decades ago. Glamorous discos and beachfront stages disappeared as the city was bombed to the ground. Like a sleeping giant patiently awaiting its revival, we can finally hear a new recording by the living representatives of that distinct era so far heard only on reissues. This record captures the historic reunion which took place in 2019 in Germany’s capital. London-based Dur-Dur Band Int. - itself an eight-piece powerhouse of Somali live-music - is backing three legendary singers. Sounding equally Asian as it does African, a definitive proto-Reggae groove channels the titans as they devotedly draw the bridge between the sorrow of all that was lost and the delight of a magic which survived. So Why Did We Have To Wait So Long To Hear This Album? By the end of the 1980s, Somalia’s capital (Xamar as the locals call it) was dancing its final dance. The musicians strived to keep it up as the country fell apart, but when the war eventually entered the capital, exile was inevitable. The national theatre was a battleground and the hotels became the backdrops for destruction, many remaining in ruin to this very day. Dur-Dur Band for example was then active in the 90s in nearby Addis Abeba, yet most of the scene was eventually dispersed over 4 continents. For a decade, Mogadishu’s veteran musicians remained dormant. For Xabiib, the glamour of stardom and Gucci had been replaced with an occasional wedding - singing alongside a backing track. In 2003, a fund-raiser was held in London for the reconstruction of Hargeisa’s National Theater which had been bombed to the ground during the war. Somali singers, actors and comedians from all over the diaspora were invited. A new Kooxda was formed around Dur-Dur’s founding member Abdillahi Cujeeri - calling itself Dur-Dur Band Int. Yet for the last twenty years they’ve been performing mostly within the Somali community. In 2015 Berlin-based Nicolas “Çaykh” Sheikholeslami was enticed by Somali music. Little did he know that his mixtape Au Revoir, Mogadishu Vol. 1 - Songs From Before The War would end up sparking a massive international interest in Somali music. Soon he was approached by Ostinato Records with the idea to create a legit compilation featuring those sounds. Thus, Sheikholeslami went on to co-curate ‘Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa’ which received a Grammy nomination in 2018. Berlin’s prestigious HKW took notice and granted him an opportunity to put together a concert with artists from the golden era. Luckily for us, Nicolas sensed the chance for a recording session to be arranged - and that is how we got this album.

Gestern war dieser Titel in der Post. Nach wenigen Stunden mit diesem Buch steht (für mich) schon etwas fest. Im Sektor Belletristik eines der wichtigsten Bücher 2023. Zu der Autorin heute nur kurz. Sie wuchs in Kuwait auf und studierte Kreatives Schreiben an der Universität Edinburgh. Dieser Titel ist ihr ihr zweiter Roman.

" Das Schweigen in mir" ist ein wunderbares Stück Exilliteratur.

Saiyidul A'yaad Shareef

It is Fard-e-Ayeen (a must to do) for all the living beings in the universe to celebrate Saiyeedul Ayiaad Eed-e-Milaadun Nabi Swallallau Alaihi Wa Sallam! It has been incorporated in Hadis that, “My Recommendations is Wajib for those who observe Eed-e-Milaadun Nabi Swallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam.”

Regarding this, Allama Hazrat Sihabuddin Ibne Hazar Haisaami Rwahmatullahi Alaihi wrote in his well received and famous Quitaab `Annee`maatul Qubra Alaal `Alaam`

قال ابو بكر الصديق رضى لله تعالى عنه من أنفق درهما على قراءة مولد النبى صلى لله عليه وسلم كان رفيقى فى الجنة.

Meaning: “Hazrat Abu Baqaar Siddique Rwadiallahu Ta`aala Anhu says, the person who will spend one dirham by expressing happiness on the occasion of Meeladunnwabi Swallallahu `Alaihi wa Sallam, will be my friend in Jannat.” Subhanallah!

قال عمر رضى لله تعالى عنه من عظم مولد النبى صلى لله عليه وسلم فقد احيا الاسلام.

Meaning: “Hazrat Umar Farooque Rwadiallahu Ta`aala Anhu says, the person who expresses happiness and gives a special respect to the day of Biladaat Shareef of Rwasoolullah Swallallahu `Alaihi wa Sallam, he basically restore Islam.” Subhanallah!

قال عثمان رضى لله تعالى عنه من أنفق درهما على قراءة مولد النبى صلى لله عليه وسلم فكانما شهد غزوة بدر وحنين.

Meaning: “Hazrat Usman Rwadiallahu Ta`aala Anhu says, the person who expresses happiness and spends one dirham on the occasion of the Meeladunnwabi Swallallahu `Alaihi wa Sallam, is as like as he participated in the Jihad of Badar and Hunaeen.” Subhanallah!

You exit your apartment, ready to get some groceries- it's been a few months since the Second Outbreak, and the prices are yet to fully recover, but things are looking up. Looking up from your feet, you notice a silhouette approaching down the streets of the Chine. 

Eventually, you make out Eva Yan hurriedly running towards you, tears staining her face. 

 "Good God, Eva, what's wrong?" You wipe away her tears, and Eva flinches as your hand brushes her cheek.

He was the noble Imaam, the Haafidh, the Critic, Zayn-ud-Deen ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Ahmad bin ‘Abdir-Rahmaan bin Al Hasan bin Mohammad bin Abil Barakaat Mas’ood As-Salaamee Al Baghdaadee (due to his place of birth), Al Hanbalee (due to his Madh-hab), Ad-Dimashqee (due to his place of residence and death).

He was born in Baghdad in 736H and was raised by a knowledgeable family, firmly rooted in knowledge, nobility and righteousness. His father played the greatest role in directing him towards the beneficial knowledge.

He learned and took knowledge from the greatest scholars of the Ummah during his time. In Damascus, he studied under Ibnul Qayyim Al Jawziyyah, Zayn-ud-Deen Al ‘Iraaqee, Ibn An-Naqeeb, Mohammad bin Isma’eel Al Khabaaz, to name a few. In Makkah he heard from Al Fakhr ‘Uthmaan bin Yoosuf An-Nuwayree. In Jerusalem his teachers consisted of Al Haafidh al Alaa’ee and in Egypt, Sadr-ud-Deen Abul Fath Maydoomee and Naasir-ud-deen bin Al Mulook.

Ibn Rajab devoted himself to knowledge and spent all his time in researching, writing, authoring, teaching, working in the field of knowledge and issuing legal rulings. He was given a teaching position in the Hanbalee School in 791H but then it was taken from him. During the lifetime of his father, he was appointed the Halaqah (study circle) on Tuesday in the Central Masjid of Banu Umayyah. This was after the death of Ibn Qaadee Al Jabal, may Allaah have mercy on him, in 771H.

The Scholars’ Praise for Him:

Ibn Qaadee Shuhbah said of him in his biography, as is stated in Al Jawhar-ul-Munaddad (pg. 48): “He read and became proficient in the various fields of science. He engrossed himself with the issues of the (Hanbalee) Madh-hab until he mastered it. He devoted himself to the occupation of knowledge of the texts, defects and meanings of the Hadeeth. And he withdrew himself in seclusion in order to write.”

Ibn Hajr said of him in Inbaa-ul-Ghamr: “He was highly proficient in the scientific disciplines of Hadeeth in terms of the names of reporters, their biographies, their paths of narration and awareness of their meanings.”

Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) treaded the Manhaj of the Salaf with regard to the issues of Eemaan and acquiring knowledge. And he supported it and defended it from the false arguments of the opponents. His books are loaded with that. And he wrote some treatises specifically on this topic such as his book ‘Bayaan Fadlu‘Ilm-is-Salaf ‘alaal-Khalaf.’ However, there can be found traces of Sufism in his books, may Allaah protect him from inclining towards it’s dangerous paths, due to what Allaah has given him from vast knowledge of the Narrations and a clear Salafee Methodology.

Al Haafidh Ibn Rajab, may Allaah have mercy on him, passed away on a Monday night, the fourth of Ramadaan, 795H. He died while in Damascus in a land, which was called Al-Humayriyyah, in a garden area he used to rent. His funeral prayer was performed the next day and he was buried in the Baab As-Sagheer graveyard next to Shaykh Abul Faraj Ash-Sheeraazee.
