Comfort song(s): The Souls Games OST (Including Elden Ring and Bloodborne). Love it. Most beautiful vibes.

Harry Styles is a Mermaid
Disclaimer: I am sure I’m not the first to report and share these links and images. I thought people would find this interesting, so I’m sharing my foray down this rabbit hole. I’d welcome any additional links or thoughts related to Mermaids and the LGBTQ community.
If you know anyone that should be credited for pictures here, let me know. None of them belong to me.
***
In November 2014, Harry Styles had the image of a mermaid tattooed on his left forearm. The bare-chested siren joined multitudes of other nautical themed tattoos that litter his body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few days after the new tat appeared, he responded to a question at a meet and greet.
“I am a Mermaid,” he said.
I started the research on this post when I saw the gif with his quote about being a mermaid. Rest below the cut.
Harry Styles’ Mermaid Tattoo — The Real Reason Behind His New Ink – Hollywood Life
I’m not going to tell you why he said he’s a mermaid. I don’t know what it means to him. I have no idea. Maybe he simply likes mermaids. Maybe he feels like it matches the themes of his and Louis’ other nautical tattoos. I can't pretend to know.
“Mermaid” as a theme, though, has a decades long association with the LGBTQ community. And I think that’s interesting in light of the imagery that Harry himself has shared and seems to connect to.
Like, that time he wore a shirt with a famous line from The Little Mermaid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or in 2019, when he dressed as Ariel for a Saturday Night Live photoshoot.
Tumblr media
Did Harry Styles REALLY say 'I am a mermaid'? Truth behind viral photo and his Ariel look for 'SNL' | MEAWW
Or his his whole video for Music for a Sushi Restaurant:
youtube
I’ve seen the Little Mermaid probably dozens of times. My child and I watched it a lot when she was growing up. And while I always knew it was an allegory for being different, I didn’t think about the deeper meaning as it relates to the LGBTQ community until more recently.
Tumblr media
According to this article from the Smithsonian,
The central story of The Little Mermaid is, of course, 16-year-old Ariel’s identity crisis. She feels constrained by her patriarchal mer-society and senses she doesn’t belong. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family. Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. She is, essentially, “in the closet” (as symbolized by her “cavern”—or closet—of human artifacts, where the character-building song “Part of Your World” takes place).
Source: 'The Little Mermaid' Was Way More Subversive Than You Realized | Arts & Culture| Smithsonian Magazine  https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/little-mermaid-was-way-more-subversive-you-realized-180973464/
The Disney version was written by writer-producer-lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken.
Tumblr media
The character of Ursula, though, is the real LGBTQ icon. “Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters. As scholar Laura Sells explained in a 1995 anthology of essays, Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song is essentially a drag show instructing the naive mermaid on how to attract Prince Eric (who is conspicuously uninterested in Ariel and most content at sea with his all-male crew and manservant Grimsby). “In Ursula’s drag scene,” Sells wrote, “Ariel learns that gender is performance; Ursula doesn’t simply symbolize woman, she performs woman.” (same source as above).
A gay man in 1980s America, Ashman had personal experience with the culture wars over “family values” and gay rights. The “Reagan Revolution” marked the arrival of the long-brewing marriage of the Republican Party with conservative Christians and included a platform that was unfriendly to gay rights, to say the least. President Reagan ignored the AIDS epidemic that swept the nation (refusing to appropriate any federal funds for research or treatment), and Republicans in general claimed the “gay plague” was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Ashman saw the film as an opportunity to advance a social message through the medium of “family entertainment.” The last thing Americans would expect from Disney was a critique of patriarchy, but sure enough, Ashman’s The Little Mermaid is a gutsy film about gender and identity—a far cry from the staid Disney catalog. (same source).
Anyone who was around in 2015 knows about RBB/SBB. But if you didn’t, the Rainbow Bears (RBB/SBB, largely assumed to be created and curated by Harry and Louis) mentioned Divine on December 1, 2015. Just after they posted about her, Harry tweeted a lyric that alluded to Divine. See below.

There’s a whole other rabbit hole you can go down about John Waters (openly gay film director) and Divine and Pink Flamingos (Pink Flamingos: A Queer Beginner’s Guide to Family, Style and Not Giving a Sh*t | by Joe Corr | Medium. https://mandysweats.medium.com/pink-flamingos-a-queer-beginners-guide-to-family-style-and-not-giving-a-sh-t-fa9aa3e6c96f
Here’s another article that talks about The Little Mermaid being important to the LGBT community.
How The Little Mermaid Found A Place In The Hearts Of LGBTQ Fans | HuffPost UK Entertainment (huffingtonpost.co.uk)
There was a lot of speculation about Harry being potentially cast as Prince Eric in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. I’m not sure how serious those rumors were, but I can imagine based on all of this research, that he might have found the Prince wasn’t the character he related to most.
Harry Styles fans upset over 'Little Mermaid' reports | CNN https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/14/entertainment/harry-styles-little-mermaid-trnd/index.html
To go even further down the rabbit hole, go all the way back to the original story. The Hans Christian Anderson version has a tragic ending, that doesn’t end with the mermaid happily ever with the prince. There is some speculation that the story was an allegory for an unrequited love that Anderson had toward a straight acquaintance.
The Little Mermaid Is Really About Unrequited Gay Love | by Tamara Mitrofanova | Lessons from History | Medium
I also want to point out that Mermaids is a UK based charity organization, that “supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.” About Mermaids - Mermaids (mermaidsuk.org.uk) https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/about-us/
All of this could be coincident to the true purpose behind what Harry’s tattoo means to him. We will likely never know its exact meaning to him.
But as time passes, and we see Harry waving various LGBTQ flags and hinting at being in the community himself, I think it might bear remembering that he said he WAS a mermaid. And I think that’s beautiful, Harry.

-For many years I held many preconceived notions about Atlantis gay cruises. Of course I was worried I was not hot enough, slim enough, muscled enough, and I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the party people. Yet so many people have told me in the past few years that an Atlantis cruise can be like any other: what you make of it. You don’t have to go to dance parties, stay up all night, or be less than 10% body fat to enjoy yourself. And IF you do want to go to dance parties, there are plenty of them, with fun creative costumes, great music, and a sea of sexy beings, which I can verify from personal experience is NOT the case on any straight cruise I’ve been on. So my partner Santi and I decided to jump in and go. We had actually signed up for another we couldn’t go on, so the anticipation had been building for years now.
-Arriving at the cruise terminal, it was clear how different this week was going to be, as so many parts of the queer tribe trickled in with bubbles, lewks, and smiles. The Oasis of the Seas is enormous, with distinctive zones including a promenade which felt a little mall-like but was spacious and led to a boardwalk, a beautiful green park space spanning another deck, and of course the top decks with pools and hot tubs. The whole ship creates a giant queer space where people can show off and be radically self-expressive. The costumes people brought were so impressive, and most everyone brought great energy and friendliness to the cruise. Unfortunately the wind and a bit of rain prevented the first few days from being spent poolside, but it did allow us to spend time in the thermal spa and enjoy the welcome party (one of my favorites because it was in such a large space), dog tag tea dance, pink party, and neon party before we even got to a port. The first port was San Juan, and we hiked through the rain to see the fort. Despite my military service, I hate the war-like instinct of our past and present. We are so lucky to be able to live fairly freely in this moment and just be ourselves. -Gays being ourselves can be a lot, especially for those like me who tend toward being a little introverted, slightly socially awkward. During moments where the crowd and music was all too overwhelming, it was easy to just slip away, get fresh air, maybe a costume change or quiet moment in the cabin, then join the party again. I wish every dance party had the option of going downstairs to one’s room to enjoy a respite. Could we keep up with the younger and more hardcore EDM / party folks all week? Hell no! But I loved dipping into the party when it felt right, and dipping out when it was time. Fortunately Santi keeps me grounded. We didn’t go to every dance party, and we did get some rest. -That rest did allow us to go to some of the restaurants and see some shows. The sushi restaurant stood out with a fantastic truffled lobster sushi roll, and the chef’s table experience rivaled many celebrated Bay Area restaurants. (Kudos Chef Abigail) The rest of the food was fine, and we hadn’t planned on focusing on the food anyway. There could have had more bottom-friendly food with improved veggie options and whole grains and plant based proteins. But the SHOWS! OMG the Aqua 80 show (imagine ‘O’ on a smaller scale, on the back of a ship) was spectacular! They water danced and slack lined and flew in on wires with twisting rings, but the diving was my favorite. The 3-meter springboards were underutilized, but they impressively dove from about 10-meter and about 20-meters (from the highest part of the ship structure). No wonder they can’t do it in high winds. Really fearless and goofy but clearly skilled divers. It capped off a sweet date night with Santi. We missed the aerial show but did catch Alan Cummings perhaps workshopping part of his new show. I caught the tail end of the last night’s comedy show, including making merciless fun of folks (while covering up their names) from their Telegram posts during the week. I forgot the comedian’s name, but he truly hit the funny bone. We’re all ridiculous, so let’s laugh about it. Really loved this wild ride of a week. Thanks to all the sprites and nymphs and oceanids who made this trip Into the Deep one that will no doubt call us back to the queer seas very soon.

I'm playing Final Fantasy 7, a videogame I already played years and years ago when I was youthful, except they remade it to so now all the characters look like horny Epcot instead of being made out of legos. (I felt an immense nostalgia for the legos a while back when I saw the toy versions of them, but). I didn't plan to play it but then the reviews of the second installment were curious enough that...
It's a curious experience because I liked FF7 at the time, but I don't feel strongly about it and I only strongly remember a couple bits. Or I feel like the fortunes of Japanese games really crashed after that and only recently have risen back up with things like Elden Ring or those last couple Zeldas or Yakuza catching on locally or whatever else. When I played FF7, Japan had all the "cool games" and I kind of think we're back there now, now that the Americans are making, you know, some real garbage. Like, we ran a whole lap!
Japanese games really like to have lonely gamers get to imagine what it's like to have friends...? FF7 or the Persona games, that's sort of the whole thing. (Yakuza 0 is a tragedy for grown ups though because it posits, "What if you had to beat up your friends by hitting square button over and over, and occasionally hitting pause so you can eat convenience store sushi to refill your health bar?" A hard question). So I'm playing and it's like... "Oh yeah, that's my buddy Tifa. I wonder how she's been." (She's been cold; she refuses to wear pants, even though she lives underneath a metal plate or something). I saw someone at a funeral the other day I hadn't seen for 20 years, and it was like "Oh. Time" not in the same way, but not in an entirely dissimilar way. It's weird to experience the passage of time as a consequence of swinging Cloud Strife's dumb sword at sewer rats.
I just go to the part where your character dresses up like a woman to seduce a Sex Man, which I have to say... I remember playing very differently when Sex Man was made out of legos and he was horny for other legos. The new version was in high definition-- just a different deal! I had a dumb-old-man thought of like, "Can you make new games that are like this" but then I remembered one of the last games I played was Baldur's Gate 3 and my character had mostly-consensual intercourse with some kind of sexually aggressive bipedal tadpole in that game inbetween her trying to convert you to tadpole Mormonism or whatever. Or Alan Wake 2 was about Finland. So the answer is yes, and ... like, games are just weird. They're just all weird and shit. Consult a 4 hour Tim Rogers video to learn more.
The weirdest thing is just they play the Final Fantasy 7 music in the Final Fantasy 7 videogame, which I should have seen coming probably, if I were "on top of my shit" but ... I haven't sat around listening to the Final Fantasy 7 music since I played Final Fantasy 7, and that music is so ... immediately a channel back to that experience. You've probably heard, you know, the Jurassic Park theme song since you saw Jurassic Park, but imagine if you hadn't heard it since you were a little kid and then it just started playing for hours at a time while your Epcot self put on a dress to infiltrate a gangbang... It would feel a way, is my point! I don't know what you'd call that feeling, but it feels like something, I suppose.
TLDR I googled whether anyone recut the scenes of Cloud Strife putting on a dress and makeup to James's Laid, and I couldn't find that anyone had done it yet, somehow. That's how I know the kids aren't okay.

Fav color: pink! I’m obsessed with that dark metallic green and bronze combo we’re seeing on the new Ford Broncos but I think my top favorite is pink.
Last movie/TV show: I just finished watching The Help (& bawling my eyes out) and Loki, about to start Wayward Pines on Hulu. I think I’ll read the books again first though.

MDHM Characters and Whether or Not I Think I Could Beat Them in a Fight (Pt. 2)
Please read part 1 first if you haven't already!
Erika
I don’t want to fight Erika. She doesn’t seem like the type to know how to physically fight (her weapon of choice is words, for Pete’s sake!), so it just doesn’t seem fair. She’d probably be able to convince me not to fight her.
But if that’s too cheat-y for you, then I would definitely win, but I’d try my best not to hurt her. (This is 100% possible btw! Jiu jitsu is actually known as the “gentle art"!)
Stu’s Mom (Cheryl)
I promise there’s a reason why I decided to put her first, and I’ll get to that in a second! So Stu’s mom is confirmed to be really good at wrestling since she came from a lineage of professional wrestlers and she is also “probably how Stu got good at fighting” (this will be important later). Now, people with backgrounds in wrestling are extremely difficult to deal with, and I have a really good feeling that Stu’s mom will also know how to use her weight to her advantage. But I’m going to be a little bit picky here and say that because she knows wrestling and not jiu jitsu I’m going to have a little bit fancier techniques at my disposal that will give me a slight advantage.
I’d win this fight, but she would ABSOLUTELY be tough to beat!
Stu
Stu is a tough one to figure out. Remember how I noted earlier that his mom is probably how he got good at fighting? To me, this implies that he has some experience in wrestling, and that he probably learned from his mom. HOWEVER, his weapon of choice is specifically his “fists” which (and I know I’m being picky here, too) implies to me that his go-to is mainly striking techniques like boxing. It almost seems to me like we’re kind of opposites in a way (his preference is striking while mine is grappling, but we have experience in both). I think this one might boil down to whether Stu can knock me out before I get him to the ground. And getting him to the ground would probably be tough since he has some experience in wrestling. But similar to his mom, I think my jiu jitsu would give me an advantage over him once we get to that point (plus I think that his preference might cause him to be a little out of practice when it comes to his wrestling skills XD).
As kind of a side note, I’m also not entirely sure how to take into account the fact that he has a crush on the MC. On the one hand, he might hold back because he likes me, but on the other, we would have grown up together (which would mean that he should definitely know better than to go easy on me in this fight!).
I don’t know. Honestly, I could see it going either way. But whoever wins, we’re definitely still friends and we’re going to get sushi afterwards (just don’t tell Alan ;) ).

“NEW YORK, ARE you feeling well and emotionally stable?” Harry Styles asked on the opening weekend of his historic 15-night stand at Madison Square Garden. When the entire crowd roared “Noooo,” he replied, “Good!” We can’t say he didn’t warn us. He kicked off his NYC Love on Tour residency with a riotous two-night celebration of mega-pop rapture at its most ecstatic. “Please feel free to do whatever you want to do in this room tonight,” Harry told the fans on Night Two. “Within reason.” It was a perfect intro, because the concept of “within reason” does not exist anywhere in the Harry cosmology—he couldn’t even say it with a straight face. Let’s just say this man is not doing wonders for the city’s emotional stability right now.
Styles is trying a new mode of touring, celebrating his blockbuster Harry’s House with extended residencies in New York, Austin, Chicago and L.A. As he told Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos in our brand new cover story, it’s a way to perform without the energy-sucking strains of travel. You can tell Harry’s in town, by the trail of feathers and sequins for blocks around—a touch of glam in the dog days of summer. NYC in August is usually a place people are desperate to escape, but he makes it seem like the most romantic destination on the planet.
Harry’s residency starts almost exactly 8 years after the first time I saw him onstage with One Direction, August 2014 at MetLife Stadium. It’s unmistakable how so much has changed about this guy, but not the weirdest thing—his pure devotion to Too Much All The Time. He thrives on an absurd drive to give his energy away, to bombard every corner of the room with the joy he gets from music, no matter how huge that room might be. As he sings in the show-opener “Daydreaming,” he wants to give you something to dream about. And he does, from the tubular-bells synth groove of “As It Was” to the destructo-punk headbang of “Kiwi.”
He took the stage to jazz pianist Bill Evans’ “Peace Piece,” which (as he told Rolling Stone in 2019) was his longtime wake-up ritual. The music was overlaid with the voice of Buddhist scholar Alan Watts, saying, “This sensation of being a separate lonely individual is a hallucination.” Watts is talking about the soul breaking free of “our phony feeling that we are something lonely locked up in a bag of skin.” But it’s also a perfect description of live music at its best: a room full of strangers from different cultures, countries, generations, breaking free to become part of something vast and strange and slightly scary. And a Harry show IS live music at its best.
One of the coolest fan signs in the pit: “Pose if you can see this.” Guess he saw it? Because this vixen never stopped wiggling, twirling, swooshing down the catwalk, giving high kicks like a Rockette with the rent due. This set is almost all uptempo bangers, mostly from Harry’s House. He’s going for a festively manic vibe, so you don’t mind him leaving out the ballads. (No “Falling,” “Cherry,” “Fine Line,” not even “Lights Up.”) It’s a super-emotional show, even without the sad songs, because the will to uplift never quits. The mood was summed up in the great moment where his guitar boogie “Cinema” crashes into “Music For A Sushi Restaurant,” linked by the horn fanfare from the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”
When he debuted these songs live in May, at his NYC One Night Only extravaganza, his excitement was off the rails—he ended the show by doing “As It Was” twice, a totally unexpected and unplanned move, because he just didn’t want it to end. (At his very first NYC show, in 2017, it was “Kiwi” he did twice.) As he says in the Rolling Stone cover story, that moment was startling even for him. As he said, “I kind of felt like, ‘All right, I’ve seen how crazy it can get.’ And I think there was something about it where I was … not terrified, but I just needed a minute. Because I wasn’t sure what it was. Just that the energy felt insane.” That’s how this show feels all the way through.
It’s his first time at the Garden since his HarryWeen blow-out last October. He’s back to performing in the round, or as he elegantly put it, “I’m gonna be in the middle of you all night!” This stage set means he has to cover more space, but nobody loves covering space like he does. He explained, “Sometimes we’re gonna be face-to-face, eye-to-eye, window-to-soul. If I’m not facing you, you’ll be looking ass to face. If you have a preference, face or ass, let me know.” He gallantly promised to distribute his ass evenly, saying, “I can assure you there is plenty to go around. Which leads me to the introduction to this very sad song.” (Who else could get away with using an ass-to-face disclaimer as a lead-in to a ballad as heart-wrenching as “Matilda”? This man only.)
As always, he took special joy in roasting all the dads in the audience. On Night 2, he announced a new innovation. “It’s called Golf Dad Cam,” he said. “We’re gonna find the golf dads. Its like Kiss Cam, except nobody wants to kiss them, because they’re golf dads!” He found 30 victims to mortify on the video screen, then proclaimed, “At the end of these shows, they’re gonna erect a banner in Madison Square Garden in honor of the golf dads. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the bottom of your tucked-in polo-shirt hearts.”
(Note: Can you imagine if Harry played the Super Bowl halftime show? It would take hours because he’d have 70,000 golf dads in the house, and he’d need to make fun of every single one of them. They’d have to cancel the damn game.)
On Night 1, a fan held up a sign asking for advice: her ex just texted her after seven years. Harry took her phone to call the ex, Josh. (“It’s ALWAYS Josh, isn’t it?”) When Josh immediately hung up on him, Harry told her, “I wish you all the happiness. Just not with Josh. There’s someone else out there who will treat you with respect and love you for who you are. Never Josh!” At the end of the show, he told the crowd, “Make some noise for Josh, whatever kind of noise you want to make.”
Harry’s House was made in pandemic isolation, so it’s a trip to hear how the songs open up live. The album’s most ethereally beautiful moments—“Daylight,” “Keep Driving,” the peerless “Satellite”—turn into full-blown glitz-rockers, thanks to his all-star band: guitar god Mitch Rowland, drum guru Sarah Jones, percussion master Pauli Lovejoy,  keyboardist Ny Oh, bassist Elin Sandberg, keyboardist Yaffra, and a jazzy four-piece horn section. On Sunday night, he busted out “Medicine,” really treating the microphone like a gentleman. At one point he paused so he could point out to Mitch and Sarah a t-shirt in the crowd that said “Bitch for Mitch.” (A category that pretty much included us all.)
He ended with the rock & roll mosh-pit raunch of “Kiwi,” a song that never fails to make strong buildings quiver in terror—both nights, it turned the floor of Madison Square Garden into Jell-O. Has anyone ever made a “Kiwi” supercut of Harry’s faces at the line “such an actress”? He gives a different actress every night, and it’s always an Oscar-worthy star turn. You also gotta love how he always says “get home safe” right before dropping “Kiwi” on our heads—it’s like telling someone “have a nice day” before setting them on fire.
“Grapejuice” isn’t in the set, probably because of its tonsil-trashing high notes, but maybe it’ll be the “To Be So Lonely” of this tour—the fan fave that sneaks into the show by popular demand. On Night 1, he teased an instrumental snippet while introducing the band—just a little edging. FWIW, when Paul McCartney hit the road this summer for his Got Back tour, he surprised fans by busting out the slightly similar Wings groove “Let ‘Em In.” Could this mean that Sir Paul is a “Grapejuice” head himself?
Harry slowed it down for his two most soulful ballads: “Sign of the Times” and the new “Matilda.” They feel spiritually linked—two poetic songs about trauma, grief, and rebirth. “Sign of the Times” is a communal anthem that gets mightier the more strangers you sing it with—in a way, that’s what the song is about. (I thought I already loved that song in 2017, but it’s built to be lived with over the years.) Yet “Matilda” is so intimate, it’s still disorienting to hear it in a crowded room. It’s a song designed for fans to access their most private selves, in a public, supportive space. Some spent “Matilda” having a meditative moment to themselves. Others let it all hang out, like the weepy group hug in front of me, with eight chosen sisters singing together. But everybody became part of the story. It’s the kind of moment Harry lives to generate.
He’d be the first to say that the audience creates these moments, and he just shows up to be part of it. But either way, the New York shows were a nonstop rush of those moments. You spend a couple of hours in this environment, and the outside world looks a little brighter when you leave, because you take that feeling with you. It’s a revelation that enthusiasm is everything.  Somehow, a 15-night stand of Harry Styles seems like it could never be enough.
Set List:
“Daydreaming”
“Golden”

THREE SHIPS:
Lumity; I already love rivals to lovers, but the fact that they get to develop the relationship past just getting together is just *chef's kiss*
Kaguya x Shirogane; the slow burn of these two genius idiots has me both rooting for them the whole way and ready to beat them both with a paper fan
Fred x Daphne x Velma x Shaggy; gotta go with a classic polyam representation, and mystery Inc don't get more classic
LAST FILM:
I think it was Green Room, which was pretty good.
CURRENTLY WATCHING:
Nothing to actively, but I guess Guy's Grocery Games and Are You Afraid Of The Dark.
CURRENTLY READING:
Just finished Dylan Dog: Mater Morbi while I was on my train ride home from Chicago, and I'm presently waiting for Dylan Dog: Case Files to arrive at my work.

Hi, for the bingo ask game - "what's wrong with you (affectionately)"
Omgosh it's Alan. Baby, lil bean, most precious lil sushi roll and the love of all our lives, bby why do you sleep on the floor? Don't you know that monsters can get you the moment you let your hand droop over the side of the bed, or your foot sticks out from the duvet, and there you are on the whole ass floor with no defence bby why I find this greatly disturbing.
Tumblr media
So disturbing bby what's wrong with you and why don't those big brothers of yours bat an eyelid to find you there.
