We packed all our things into the Toyota and left our hillbilly cabin behind in a cloud of dust. We've had a great stay here; a great choice for peace and tranquility away from town. We were less than two hours drive from our next 3 night stop in Banff so we stopped off in Golden to do a bit of shopping and enjoy a birthday lunch in the Island Restaurant which was most acceptable. Mexican day produced battered fish wrapped in a tortilla with salsa, rice and black beans.
The sun shone and as soon its rays peeped over the mountain tops the temperature climbed to 28°. The further we drove east, entering Alberta, so the clouds began to gather and temperatures plummeted dramatically to just 11°, then the deluge began. As we checked into the hotel in Banff, the final ignominy was a tremendous clap of thunder. Sitting in our hotel apartment waiting for the rain to stop, we watched Murray beat little Peniston at Wimbledon.
Our route from Golden to Banff had taken us first to Lake Louise which is on our hit list to visit so we thought it opportune to call in before travelling a further 45mins to Banff. So we, against all prompting from Mrs Google, took the exit for the Lake. Following the encouragement from traffic directors every 100m we drew nearer and nearer to our destination. Car park after car park was full, and we were waived passed each one until we reached the point where we started to come back again. Lake Louise was at capacity. Apparently if you don't check in by 7.30am, you won't get in. We will get a tour we think.
It might be interesting getting views of the good people of Alberta. One of our hosts in BC was extremely dismissive and critical of Alberta and the aloofness regarding their oil exports especially when it came to cutting through their hillsides laying an oil pipeline. We spoke to some locals Martine met outside the public washrooms who said that BC liberals need to get a grip and live in the real world. Alberta supplies almost all of Canada's oil without which the economy would be crippled, they said. I sense there is more under the surface to look out for.
Now settled into our apartment hotel we thought we'd take a stroll downtown for a beer and get the courtesy bus back. We chose the Banff Avenue Brewing Company and had a pint of Black Pilsner which slipped down a treat. What would go down better following a good pint than chips. McDonald's was inexplicably shut, but we found a Popeye's which delivered the goods, Cajun Chips. Excellent.
Crammed into the over full bus back to the hotel; bodies everywhere, Martine was offered a seat. I with a birthday was not.

Alberta’s information and privacy commissioner (OIPC) launched an investigation Wednesday into the Alberta Energy Regulator’s communication about the tailings pond leak at Imperial’s Kearl project in the oilsands commissioner Diane McLeod will examine “whether AER had an obligation under Section 32 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) to disclose information to the public or others about the leak.”
A request for the OIPC to investigate was made by an Alberta lawyer in early March has said they should have been kept in the loop on the spills from Imperial’s Kearl mine tailings ponds.
Tailings are the water, clay, sand, and a small amount of leftover bitumen that remain after most of the bitumen has been removed from the oilsands during the extraction process at the mine is downstream from the spill, said in a statement Tuesday that it representatives were recently able to access the spill site on the north side of the Kearl tailings pond.
“What we observed was worse than what anyone anticipated,” the First Nation said representatives saw toxic water still on the ground in an unfenced, uncontained area beside streams and ponds.
It said it also saw animal tracks in and out of the area, tailings puddles, and no barriers between seepage and water bodies won’t stop until we have a full accounting of this catastrophe. We are not going away,” said Chief Allan Adam.
The Alberta government said in an emailed response that the drinking water in the area is being tested has done sampling from five different locations — 12 samples of water to six labs — that have looked at 575 measurements,” said Environment Minister Sonya Savage.
“So far, all of that has shown that the drinking water is safe, that it hasn’t been impacted Wednesday, Imperial said based on its monitoring, released fluids did not enter any waterways continues to show there have been no impacts to local drinking water sources.
The first wastewater release was spotted and reported in May of last year as discolored water near a tailings pond at the Kearl site north of Fort McMurray was found to be tailings seepage was provided to area First Nations until it was disclosed to the public and federal and provincial environment ministers along with news of a second release of 5.3 million liters of tailings.
Imperial hosted a community meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Fort Chipewyan team will be on-site to answer questions from the community,” said Imperial spokesperson Lisa Schmidt before the meeting. “We appreciate the opportunity to rebuild trust, share directly with community members, and get their feedback.”
Early in the meeting, two community members approached the front of the room and interrupted the Imperial spokesperson about this in 2022 — it was only reported a year after. You guys failed to disclose it to the province, to Canada — now my kids who are in the back have to live this for the next generation to come,” one of the unidentified men said.
The men stated their community may have to deal with the fallout of the leak for the next 20 years and encouraged the Imperial Oil representative to drink water from the affected area.
There were more moments of tension as the community sought answers and assurances to have on the industry and our traditional way of life?” the community member added.
Imperial insists there is no indication of impacts to wildlife or fish if the community isn’t convinced its latest update, posted online Wednesday, Imperial said it has completed drilling more than 140 monitoring and pumping wells as part of its plans to expand its seepage interception system near Kearl’s lease boundary.
Work is now underway to complete these wells and construct drainage structures in the area ahead of the spring melt oil online on March 19 200 people are working on remediation and related activities at the Kearl site. The company said all seven Indigenous communities have been invited to tour the site and do independent water testing.
“Imperial’s current monitoring and water sampling data has been stable and shows no impacts to local waterways or drinking water,” the company stated on March 19. “There continues to be no indication of impacts to wildlife or fish said it conducted wildlife monitoring and installed additional fencing at inactive work areas to prevent potential access.
The company also said it did “notify communities of both incidents in May 2022 and February 2023. We deeply regret communications during our investigations into the May incident were not regularly provided to communities.”
Premier Danielle Smith said the delay in a public notification has illuminated for Alberta to ensure future alarms are sounded more quickly.
Smith said her government is working with the province’s oilsands regulator to develop better policies to give affected groups timely notification practice and being a good neighbor (means) more communication is better,” Smith said Tuesday at an unrelated news conference in Mundare, Alta.
“That’s going to be our approach going forward. I’ve talked to the environment minister about the energy minister about the regulator that is working with the (Alberta Energy) Regulator to develop new processes to make sure that any time there is an incident that the comms are clear and radical transparency courtesy, make sure any impacted party has a heads-up on the misinformation they see on social media or in the media.”
Earlier this week, federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault repeated his call for a presence for environmental monitoring and communications in the oilsands in light of the Kearl seepages.
Guilbeault also repeated his plan for a new body with federal, provincial, and First Nation members that would meet regularly to share information, especially on environmental emergencies would also discuss cleaning up tailings releases, how to keep the vast toxic ponds contained, and long-term solutions for them.
Guilbeault said officials from Imperial and the Alberta Energy Regulator will be invited to appear before the House of Commons environment and sustainable development committee about 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, the newest oilsands sites in the area, coming online in the past decade. The company said its leases occupy approximately 200 square kilometers in the region.
The mine is jointly owned by Imperial Oil (71 percent) and ExxonMobil Canada (29 percent). Both are owned by the international oil and gas corporation ExxonMobil.

The Challenges Going Through B C's Heli-skiing Industry
Brothers killed by avalanche while heli-skiing in southeastern B.C. With hundreds of established relationships and very powerful customer insights it became clear to Culp and Strasbourger that they want to vertically combine their enterprise. The aim of the Canadian Ski Council is to extend participation in recreational snowboarding, alpine and cross-country skiing in Canada. That backcountry experience at Hatcher Pass, and the quiet, are what some worry Heli skiing might be ruined by having a helicopter buzzing overhead. Our pleasure built as we stood with our ft anchored firmly in the snow drifts surrounding the touchdown pad, as the whirring noise made by the helicopter’s blades obtained nearer and nearer. It touched down a quantity of feet in front of us, causing the snow to swirl up and round us like a cyclone of snowflakes.
This is a standard response to a new exercise that does have some inherent risks. Just like driving a car, there many things that you are in a position to do to coach and inform your self to keep away from an accident before you even get in and turn the key. You will kind a partnership along with your information and members of your group to make your day as safe as it might be.
Heli-Skiing is certainly one of the most gratifying experiences for individuals who respect being in the mountains in the winter months. Skyline has been actively involved in this business since it’s inception. Alpine Helicopters is excited Heli skiing to introduce our latest sightseeing tour location in Kananaskis, Alberta. This is where the guides grab your skis and poles and throw them in a pile, and everyone huddles up whereas the chopper pulls away, invariably blowing snow into every possible entry point in your jacket and pants. And like that, you’re alone in the wilderness and it’s time to ski. Be it on an epic resort day or deep in the backcountry, no skier ever forgets those first few turns in deep snow.
CMH President & COO Rob Rohn will oversee the transition and all operations. Whistler Heli Skiing takes skiers and snowboarder s from intermediate to expert capability degree. Skiers and boarders are positioned into groups of comparable capability. Certain packages are reserved for experts only due to this Heli skiing fact this normally ensures that specialists are grouped with different experts. To make the powder skiing/snowboarding expertise more gratifying, you can hire brand new powder skis from Salomon, Rossignol and K2 and Burton powder boards together with the Fish and Barracuda.

Alberta man fined $9K, loses hunting, guiding privileges in B.C. | Globalnews.ca
An Alberta man has lost his hunting and guiding privileges in B.C. following an investigation that included cross-border help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) says he was involved in illegal guiding operations on the Yukon River between January 2012 and March 2013. Richard Todd Bunnage pled guilty in May to being involved in an illegal guiding operation by Tenaka River Guide Service in northern British Columbia.
A photo circulating on social media appeared to show the carcass of a dead moose, the COS said.
The COS said the pilot delivered the leg to conservation officers, who then identified the suspected hunter and tracked him to his home in the United States.
“It matched a sample from remains at the B.C. scene,” said the spokesperson for the provincial law enforcement agency.
The COS said officers later learned a black bear had also been illegally harvested during the same excursion. He was also charged with making a false statement to the COS and being a party to an offence by a tour operator.
The COS most of the fine will go to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.
COS Jeff Clancy said the fine was roughly what they had expected but no further action will be taken.
“We can always hope the fine amount reflects the deterrent factor,” said Clancy.
“Those parts are extremely valuable,” said Clancy, who noted the case not only involved a multi-agency effort but that it also consumed many hours.
“We’re actually looking into a reward program for that pilot,” said Clancy.

He was like a second father to me.
June 3, 2022
We lost Deb's Dad, my father-in-law, on Memorial Day. He was in his mid 50s when I first met him, but he seemed much younger. Oh, he looked younger, for sure, even until the day he died. But he thought younger, too. That was the thing about him, for me. "Razz," was the rare type of individual who, as F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, could "...hold two opposed ideas in his mind at the same time, and still function." It led to the countless heartfelt conversations we had over the countless cheap beers we drank together. I wrote his obituary:
Edward C. Rensi
Ninety-six-year-old World War II veteran and longtime Monroe County resident Edward C. Rensi died on Memorial Day at The Arbors in Woodsfield from cardiac arrest.
Commonly known by his nickname, “Razz,” given to him during early childhood by his father, Ed was born on December 7, 1925, in Parlett, Ohio to Andrew E. and Edith (Visintainer) Rensi. Raised in Wintersville, he loved to hunt, fish and play baseball as a young boy. Ed graduated from Wintersville High School and played saxophone in the school’s marching band. After returning from his tour of duty with the Navy in World War ll, he married Alberta Bossick of Hopedale in 1950. During their young adult years, Ed and “Bert” moved to Bloomingdale and began raising their three children. During that time he worked in supply for North American Coal Corp. In 1965, he was transferred to Powhatan Point as a purchasing agent and moved his young family to Woodsfield. He concluded his career at the supply office there and retired from the company in 1985.
A member of the Greatest Generation, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 18. He was assigned duty on the USS California and was a crew member when the ship was hit by a Japanese kamikaze during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in January 1945. Forty-four of his fellow shipmen were killed and another 155 were injured.
Ed was interviewed about his war experiences for the Grand Valley State University Veterans Project. His recollections of the war in the Pacific Theater can be viewed on YouTube. (Enter GVSU Veterans History Project—Edward Rensi.)
When he returned home from the war he worked a variety of jobs—from butcher to coal truck driver to railroad worker.  He then moved to Lincoln Park, Michigan where he lived with relatives and found employment at the Dodge Main, a massive auto assembly plant in Hamtramck.
But ever the “country boy,” young Ed returned to the hills of Southeast Ohio a year later. One day at an ice cream shop he met a pretty girl, Alberta Bossick of Hopedale, and politely asked for a lick of her cone. That lick would lead to 72 years of marriage and three children.
During his six decades in Woodsfield, Ed fished many of the small ponds in Monroe County in pursuit of the bluegills he loved—pan fried in a beer batter. He was also a small game hunter—mostly squirrels and rabbits. For many years he cut and split wood to heat the home that he and Bert renovated.
During the spring and summer he loved nothing more than to watch his beloved Cleveland Indians (Guardians), rarely missing a game on television. He also had passions for boxing and football, whether it was played by the Noles, Buckeyes or Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Also, he reveled in the fact that he and Bert were able to spend the last 28 winters of his life in Fort Myers, Florida.
His greatest love, however, were his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he taught many things: his lexicon of secret words (“goomis,” “twiddler,” “skeef,” etc.); how to bait a line; how to bat a ball; how to fillet a fish: and much, much more. He called the boys “renegades.” He called the girls “my little darlings.” They simply called him “Papa,” with a love and admiration that was obvious to all.
Some people measure greatness in terms of wealth. Some measure it in terms of education or achievement. The measure of Edward Rensi was the values that he carried around with him every day of his life—character, honesty and integrity. He was, by those measures, a truly great man.
Ed was predeceased by his brother Eugene and wife Doris. He is survived by his loving wife Alberta; son Terry (Jane); daughter Debbie Bokuniewicz (Len); daughter Becky Ricer (Mike); grandchildren Leslie Fife (B.J.), Andrew Rensi (Maryn), Nick Bokuniewicz, Gordon Bokuniewicz, Erika Board, Erin DeAngelis (Jimmy), Lindsay Barnhart (Brian); great grandchildren Lennon, Lydia and Robert Fife; Beau Barnhart; two soon-to-be born baby girls; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A memorial service, including Mass at St. Sylvester church, is scheduled for June 11 at 11:00 a.m. There will not be a viewing. Details can be found at wattersfuneralhome.com  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer Gas Card Program or St. Sylvester School.

“Look man I’m happy for you I am, but is she just using you as a rebound? I know your not dating, it’s just sex, but that’s the thing, it’s not just sex to you. You’ve been in love with her for years, I just don’t want you to get hurt, that’s all.”
Frankie mulls over his words, “do you think she’s not over Caleb?”
“Only she can answer that man, but you don’t get over a five year relationship that quick. Talk to her, that’s all you can do, but you gotta tell her how you really feel.” The conversation ends there as the others join. Frankie can’t stop thinking about it. They reminisce on their time on tour and all the women they’ve had, when talk turns towards you.
“How’s Y/N, heard she’s been unwell lately?”
“Yeah some sorta bug, I told her to go see a doctor but you know her stubborn as a mule.”
Benny laughs, “she’s not pregnant is she?”
They all laugh at that, except Frankie, the colour drains from his face as he recalls the few times you’ve done it without protection. Oh god, what if she is! No one notices his blank expression except Pope.
“You ok man?”
“Hmm, yeah I eh….I gotta go.”
He stands up abruptly and leaves without another word, slamming the door behind him.
***
Your curled up on the couch when the front door swings open.
“Hey, I thought you were with the guys tonight?”
Frankie doesn’t answer you, instead he throws a bag down on the coffee table. He fishes into it and takes out a white box throwing it on your lap.
“Frankie what are you…”
You go quiet as you stare at the box in your hands.
“What….why…..Frankie..”
“Do it…now…..please.”
“What why? I’m not pregnant.” You let out a little laugh but quickly stop when you notice Frankie is deadly serious.
“Oh come on Frankie, really, it’s just a bug”
“One that lasts a week? Just do it.”
Your eyes slide over to the coffee table, where the bag is, filled with pregnancy tests. Your mind is reeling, but the only thing your worried about right now is the look on Frankie’s face. He looks angry.
“Ok I’ll go do it now so.”
You make your way towards the bathroom, as you try to close the door Frankie’s hand stops you.
“Frankie I’m not peeing with you looking at me.”
“Ok I’ll…I’ll just wait outside then.”
***
Your both sitting on the bed, Frankie is nervously biting his nails. Your panicking now too. What if you are pregnant. Your not ready to be a mother. Oh god! Frankie’s alarm on his phone goes off signalling that the three minutes are up. You both look at each other.
“What does it say?”
Your hands are shaking as you lift up the test, you stare at it for a few minutes before letting out a small gasp. Frankie gently touches your leg breaking you from your trance.
“Hey, what does it say?”
You can’t answer him so you hand him the test. Taking it from you he looks down at the digital screen.
Pregnant!
