Saltwater fishing in Florida.
Saltwater fishing in Florida is a popular and exciting activity due to the state's extensive coastline, diverse marine habitats, and abundant fish species. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, Florida offers a wide range of opportunities for saltwater fishing.
TYPES OF FISHING:
Florida offers various types of saltwater fishing, including shoreline fishing: you can fish from beaches, piers, jetties, and other accessible shoreline areas. Common catches include snook, redfish, seatrout, pompano, mangrove snapper, and more.
2. BOAT FISHING:
Fishing from a boat provides access to the hidden spots that you can't get to by land. A boat also provides the ability to get to deeper offshore waters. If you don't have a boat there are plenty of charter captains available for hire. Offshore fishing can yield species like grouper, snapper, kingfish, and sailfish.
3. KAYAK AND CANOE FISHING:
Florida's coastal and inland water-ways are ideal for kayak and canoe fishing. These smaller boats allow you to explore shallow areas and reach spots that may be inaccessible by larger boats.
Kayaks have been increasing in popularity in recent years due to the ability to access places that are hard to reach.
4. OFFSHORE FISHING:
Offshore fishing offers the chance to catch, larger gamefish such as marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, and swordfish. Charter boat captains who specialize in deep sea fishing are available on coastal cities.
5. POPULAR FISHING DESTINATIONS:
Florida has numerous renowned fishing destinations, including: 1. KEY WEST:
Known for it's diverse fishery and excellent year round fishing opportunities.
2. MIAMI:
Offers a mix of inshore and offshore fishing options, with chances to catch a variety of species.
3. TAMPA BAY:
Known for it's rich ecosystem, providing opportunities for inshore and nearshore fishing.
4. SW FLORIDA:
With Boca Grande being the center of attention because of the tarpon run in early May. But the region has good year round fishing for snook redfish, sea trout, and more.
5. DESTIN:
Famous for it's clear waters and deep sea fishing, often referred to as the " World's Luckiest Fishing Village".
6. Panama City:
Offers a range of fishing options, from inshore to deep sea and hosts various fishing tournaments.
TACKLE AND GEAR:
The type of tackle and gear you'll need depends on the fishing style and the species you're targeting. Commonly used equipment includes spinning reels and rods, braided lines, mono lines, different types of hooks, live bait, and fishing accessories like, pliers, knives, and of course a cooler to store your fish in.
WEATHER AND CONDITIONS:
Check your local forecast before you head out to ensure that saltwater fishing remains enjoyable and sustainable for everyone.
Remember becoming a skilled saltwater angler takes time and experience. Learn from experienced anglers, study local fishing reports, experimenting with different techniques will help you improve your fishing skills over time.
Also remember to buy your fishing license and follow the regs. Thank you Captain Glenn.

Warnings: boss JJ & his employee, 5 year age gap, oral, protected sex.. might make this a series.
I forced a grin as my dickhead of a boss strolled in, his red work shirt cut into a cut off and his hat on backwards. I tried not to stare along with every other female in the shop as he joined me behind the counter, plastering a smile to his face as he faced the customers. It was hard not to stare at his sun kissed muscles or the clench of his jaw or the blonde mop of hair that was curling under his hat.
“How’s it going, boss?” I asked, wanting to fill the silence after watching him flirt with another married woman. Who knew women were so interested in fishing gear?
“It’s going.” He grumbled, before giving that charming smile to a group of teens buying shirt’s. I’m pretty sure they’d purchased every single one we carry but whatever.
The rest of the night went like always. He was talkative to everyone but me, I stocked shelves, his blue eyes caught mine as he glared at me and I tried not to roll my eyes. He was so hot but he was such a moody prick. I often wondered why he even hired me if he was going to be so shitty all the time.
“Your money is in the back.” JJ finally said as I flipped off the lights and locked the doors at close.
“Thanks.” I chirped as I followed him in the back, the money drawer tucked under his arm. I grabbed the envelope of cash with my name on it from next to the safe and tucked in my pocket as I waited for him to ready the bank deposit for Monday. I hauled myself up on to the work bench, my legs swinging as I scrolled through my phone. And waited. And waited. And waited.
Finally the lights were flipped off and I set my phone down just as I felt him near me. My heart started to race when I felt him brush up against my knees, forcing my legs to part. I couldn’t see more than an outline of his body in the dark but I could feel the heat radiating off him. The need.
“Now you want something to do with me?” I taunt, tracing my finger up his forearm. A moment passes and I feel his breath on my face, the mint gum filling my head.
“Shut up and take your shirt off.” JJ said softly, making my insides tighten as I obeyed.
I grabbed the hem of my shirt and pulled it over my head before reaching back to flick the clasp of my bra open then dropped it too. His hands found the tops of my thighs and I panted as his groin made contact with mine. I could hear how hard he was breathing as his hand came up to palm my breast. I arched into his touch, filling his hand with the flesh. His free hand did the same, massaging and kneading the flesh then tweaking my hardened nipples. I was rocking against him for friction, my body screaming for more when he stopped.
“Get on your knees.” I nearly moaned hearing his voice deep with lust just as I heard the clink of his belt.
I lowered myself to the floor, my hands finding the tops of his thighs when I felt the smooth tip of him kiss my lips.
“Suck.” I didn’t have to be told twice. I swiped my tongue of his slit, circling it before sucking it into my mouth. I heard a gasp of air leave him as sucked on the swollen tip, his precum coating my tongue. When his hands yanked my hair free of his tie, I took him deeper as he started to control the pace. I gagged, my knees screaming from the hard floor but I didn’t stop. Just when his grunting comes quicker and I know he’s about to cum, the ring of his phone has me nearly jumping out of my skin like someone had caught us. I’m even more surprised when he digs his phone out and answers it while keeping one hand in my hair.
“Yea?” JJ says calmly into the phone, keeping his voice even and lust free. I move my hand to his balls and he jerks, hand tightening in my hair.
“Okay, I’ll be there soon.” A pause.
“Alright, thanks.” JJ hangs up and I’m hauled to my feet, his hands quickly undoing the buttons on my shorts before bending me over the workbench.
“Have to make this quick.” JJ grunts from behind me.
“Somewhere else you need to be?” I hear the tear of a foil packet, my body trembling with anticipation.
“Actually yes.” Then he’s pushing inside me. I open my mouth on a moan, his cock too big to go in easily without any foreplay, but his hand slaps down over my mouth as he pulls my body upright against his. I could feel him everywhere, he was so deep.
My nails dig into the workbench as he starts to fuck me hard and fast. I moan into his hand, his heavy breathing in my ear as he fills me up over and over again. I wasn’t sure how we got here. I didn’t think he could stand me but I was the only one who didn’t put up with his bullshit and didn’t drool over him all the time. One night we were arguing then he was fucking me and we just never seemed to stop. The only thing he’d said after was this stayed between us or I could go work somewhere else. I didn’t tell him that he paid more and with cash so I kept my mouth shut. Even if it was because more of the fact that he fucked me like no one had ever done before and less about the job. I should be partly ashamed of myself since I don’t know a goddamn thing about him aside from being my boss. I know he’s a live or die Pogue, especially with the word tattooed around his knuckles on one hand. I know he’s five years older than I am. I know he runs a very successful charter and doesn’t know a stranger but that’s it. I know nothing about his personal life or his friends or what he does when hes no longer inside me. He could have a wife and kids at home for all I know but he never wears a ring on his ring finger, just on the others.
“Focus.” JJ growls in my ear, making my breasts bounce with every harsh thrust. I arch my back, pushing back against him as I reach down to stroke my clit. There was something so hot about the fact that I was completely naked and he was fully clothed.
“You wanna cum for me?” JJ covers my hand on my clit with his own, making me apply more pressure while his other hand muffles any noises I make. I nod, my body tensing as fire fills my veins and my insides tighten.
“Let go. Let me feel this tight fucking pussy squeeze the life out of me.” My mind and body shatter at his filthy words, everything going black for a moment as he fucks me through my climax while stroking my clit hard until I’m panting and trembling. I can’t hold myself up any longer and he pushes me down on the table, fucking me so hard the workbench slaps the wall until finally he stills with a breathy moan, making my toes curl as he fills up the condom inside me.
I shudder as he pulls out, leaving me aching and empty, while he discards the condom and buttons his pants. A moment later he’s pulling my shorts and panties back up and handing me my shirt and bra.
“I have to go.” He says urgently so I quickly redress and follow him to sit the alarm. We don’t say anything as we exit the back door after setting the alarm. His steps are quick as he goes towards his truck but he suddenly drops his keys with a curse just as I hear the FaceTime ring on his phone. I don’t mean to ease drop but I’m parked behind him on the street and when he answers, a child’s voice has me stopping in my tracks.
“Hi daddy, are you on your way?” My heart sinks. He does have a kid at home. Or kids. A daughter specifically. One that has him grinning ear to ear as his snatches up his keys and unlocks his truck.
“Yea princess, I’m on my way.” His truck starts and pulls away before I can even unlock my door. I don’t think I know how right now.
JJ Maybank has a daughter.

"Get in the damn car! We're late!" Chaery yells at Seungmin as he lazily walks over after forcing for a pitstop just to get snacks. Yunho laughs as he watches from the rear view mirror, popping his mouth open when you lean over and feed him a fish ball.
"Why don't you get in and stop worrying about me? I'm getting there!" You hear Seungmin yell back as Soobin swings the door open and slides into the back seat.
"Maybe they'll never notice if we just drive off?" Soobin suggests, making Yunho chuckle again.
"He's almost to the car."
"Why is she hella mad anyway?" Soobin shivers in his jacket.
"He's taking his sweet ol' time. Plus, you know how Chaery is. Her family is full of seasoned travelers. They don't do pitstops and stuff." You dip the fish ball into the sauce and pop it into your mouth.
"Right." Soobin sips on his cup of coffee, scooting closer to the door when Chaery and Seungmin finally slip into their seats.
"We're literally so behind now. You made Yuyu wait." She continues to go at Seungmin, making him roll his eyes.
"Yunho, I'm sorry. I really had to use the bathroom. Some people don't understand it's a thing."
"You're good." Yunho starts up the car and instantly turns up the heat. "We've only got about an hour and a half left."
Today, you and your friends were off to spend a few days deep in the snow; renting a huge cabin near a snowboarding and ski resort. Yunho graciously offered to drive, patiently dealing with your friends and their requests on the way over.
Yunho heads to the cabin to help drop off the bags before meeting up with the rest already at the ski resort. He pulls into valet while the rest of you hop out and head straight into the store to get some gear and rent some snowboards. You find the rest of your friends hanging around in the café, sipping on hot cocoa while waiting for your group to arrive. Everyone is in good spirits, excited to see Yunho alongside of you. Even though he's tagged along a few times, you still can't help but feel worried about Yunho. You don't want him to feel isolated or left out, especially if you and your friends already have a good bond with each other. But, he fits in so well every single time, you almost feel like he's been friends with them for as long as you have been.
He tries, and the effort shows.
Once the snowboarding finally takes off, you find out that Yunho has been snowboarding before and is pretty comfortable with it. You, on the other hand, are terrified out of your mind. It takes a few tries, a patient Yunho and constant falls before you're [at the very least] boarding in a straight path. But, you're having fun and sharing lots of laughs with your friends, and you find yourself enjoying yourself no matter the circumstance.
After an hour or so of boarding, you, Yunho and a few of your friends sit off to the side to observe everyone else and play around with the snow in the surrounding area. You give your sister a Facetime call during the brief break, getting your friends and Yunho in the screen. Your sister kept calling Yunho a cutie, demanding for you to bring him over for dinner ASAP. Yunho agrees and tells your mom and sister that he'll see them soon again, waving goodbye before helping you stand to your feet for another round of snowboarding.
You and your friends are out there for another 1.5 hours before you call it quits, heading back to the cabin for a relaxing rest of the evening before another day of playing in the snow tomorrow. Everyone pitches in to make a good, hearty dinner— Yunho and a few of the other boys grilling in the covered back patio while the girls stayed indoors and finished preparing the rest of the dishes over some drinks. Once everything is set, everyone sits at the table and quietly enjoys their food before debating what to watch for the rest of the night.
After dinner, most of the food is gone, and the group is cleaning around before you head upstairs to your shared room with Yunho. You take a shower first, while Yunho hangs out with the group downstairs, enjoying the hot water as it hits your skin. You take a good, lengthy 20 minute shower; gently moisturizing before getting into Yunho's shirt and some shorts, leaving your wet hair to air dry.
Luckily, the cabin is warm enough, but you know you'll get cold the longer you sit around. Before leaving the room, you turn on the portable heater just to warm the room a bit more before you get to bed. By the time you've headed back downstairs, a few of your friends are huddled around the living room now watching a true crime docuseries with some snacks; the rest already resting in their rooms or asleep from the eventful day.
"I'm gonna shower." Yunho kisses your cheek before excusing himself to shower. You watch for a bit before helping clean up around the kitchen and living room. You then bid your friends goodnight— the exhaustion kicking in quick that you don't really have time to sit and enjoy the rest of the docuseries they've started. When you get back into the room with a cup of tea in hand, Yunho has just turned off the shower and steps out in nothing but a towel. His hair is damp and you can't help but ogle at his frame, his body. "Hey. You didn't wanna watch?"
"No, the exhaustion is hitting me pretty badly now. I just helped clean up a bit downstairs and made some tea."
"Mm. Is the room warm enough for you?" He points at the portable heater that he's turned up a bit more.
"Yes. It's cozy." You chuckle. "Thank you." You sit on the bed with your back against the wall, watching as Yunho takes a seat on the edge. He's running a smaller wet towel across his damp hair, his back facing you. You can't help but crawl over and throw your arms over his shoulders, planting random kisses against the side of his neck and shoulders.
"Cutie." He chuckles. "What can I do for you?"
"A kiss?" He smiles, dipping forward to connect his lips with yours in a sweet kiss.
"You sure that's all?" He teases. "You know you can just tell me, baby."
"That's all." You continue to kiss him, hand traveling down his chest, to grazing across the tent forming in his towel.
"Hey." He whines in between kisses, slightly hissing when you continue to gently palm him through the towel. "If you keep doing that, I won't be able to stop myself."
"Your fault for walking out of the damn bathroom when it's literally below 0 outside." He laughs, hands falling onto your hips when you crawl onto his lap.
"It was warm enough in here!"
"Sure." You playfully roll your eyes.
"Take these off." He whispers, tugging on your shorts.
"So bold." You tease as he helps you out of your shorts and bites his bottom lip.
"Mm, well. You started it." His hands come up your shirt to squeeze your sides. "Care to show me what exactly you need, love?" He smirks, a drip of a suave tone slipping through his lips.
"Mhm." You sit back a bit and run your hand up his towel to gently stroke his already-hardened member. He hisses and tilts his head back in pleasure, tempted to thrust into your hand as you pump him at a steady pace. He lets out low, strangled moans, trying his best to keep contact with you through hooded lids. You take the opportunity to spit onto his dick, letting it drip down the head and down his length while you pick up the pace. Yunho's moans are a little louder now, and hearing it drives you crazy.
"Jesus." He lowly groans. "Baby, wait, wait, wait—" He grabs at your wrist and stops you. "You'll make me cum if you keep going."
"You don't want that?"
"No. Or else, we would've gone through all that trouble of taking off your shorts for nothing." You giggle, adjusting your position to line him up at your entrance.
"We have to be quiet."
"Do we? They have the docuseries on loud downstairs." You slowly sink down his length, lips attaching to his as you both let out soft moans while adjusting to the feeling.
"Mm, but there's still rooms across—" Yunho chases after your lips, enclosing it in a heated kiss before you can say anything else. He grips onto your hips and guides you at a steady pace, more gargled and low moans leaving him as you work him.
"They won't hear a thing, pretty. Don't worry." He smirks against your lips. "Is it really a bad thing, though?"
"Yunho." You giggle, tilting your head back in pleasure when his cock hits you in all the right places, clit rubbing against him perfectly.
"Love when you say my name like that." He mutters against your neck, tongue swiping against the surface before he bites onto your neck. You let out a sigh just as his hand comes to your neck, gently squeezing as he watches you ride him at a steady rhythm.
"You feel so good." Your hands trail up the nape of his neck, tugging at the ends of his hair. His hands come back to your sides as he whispers in your ear, praising and cooing you straight to the edge.
Gonna keep being a good girl for me?
Riding me like you were made for me.
So pretty, so beautiful.
My baby.
And it only takes a couple of more rolls against Yunho before you're twitching and trembling in his grip, digging your nails into his shoulders as he thrusts up into you and fills you up shortly afterwards. He groans as lets out every last bit into you, lips grazing against your neck before planting a soft trail there, to your jaw, to your lips.
"That was fun." You say, making Yunho chuckle.
"Let's get cleaned up." He looks down at the towel that's now on the floor. "Again." You laugh, heading to the bathroom to clean up, get dressed and do some final touches before slipping into bed with Yunho. He instantly pulls you into his arms, wrapping one around your shoulders while you lay on his chest. "Can barely keep my eyes open now." You smile when Yunho kisses you on the forehead, letting out a content sigh with you in his arms.
"Yunho?"
"Mhm?"
"Thanks for coming along on this little trip."
"Wouldn't miss it for a thing, love." He hums against you, falling asleep in due time just to repeat the agenda all over again tomorrow.

Take Care of Yourself
After their escape from the Shadow Company's looming hunt for their heads, Ghost, Soap, and Jade headed to the Los Vaqueros safehouse on the outskirts of Las Almas. Soaked by the rain, the Scot needed some help with his wound on his shoulder.
Soap isn't the only one who needed help, though.
Pairing : Simon "Ghost" Riley x Charlotte "Jade" Le Jardin (OC) Word Count : ~ 2700
Warning : Fluff with a slight bit of angst, a touch of hurt/comfort, and good ol' cursings.
Title and story inspired by the song Take Care of Yourself by Maisie Peters
"Soap, where's your wound?" Jade asked the sergeant as she rummaged through her gears. Ghost, Soap, and Jade were standing near the truck they found in front of the church, currently just a kilometer away from Alejandro's safe house on the eastern side of Las Almas. However, now that the Los Vaqueros had been under the Shadow Company's custody, they cannot trust anyone. The three of them were all that they've got.
"Do you have the equipment?" Ghost, who's standing leaning onto the side of the truck asked.
"Here, fuck… I think the adrenaline shot is finally wearing off." His finger pointed at the bloody makeshift bandage on his right shoulder, sitting on the grass with his back on the side of the wheel. Their whole bodies are wet from the rain, but at least the cold helped with the blood clotting.
Jade knelt down to the ground, observing the wound. "That thing served its purpose, you did great, Soap. Now the bullet's still in there, and we need to get it out and sew it in order to let it heal properly."
"Don't worry." The MI6 zipped out a roll of cloth, putting them onto the grass field to reveal a series of stainless steel tools that Soap could tell were definitely not medical tools. "I can make do."
"Wait, Jade. Isn't that…" Soap nervously glanced back and forth to her and her equipment.
"Torture devices, yes. But it doubles as a medical kit for emergency situations, which is now." The woman lifted up a scissor, cutting the bloody bandage from Soap's shoulder, revealing the gunshot wound that Graves had inflicted upon him. Soap hissed as she gently peeled the cloth from his skin while staring at the wound underneath.
"The bleeding has mostly stopped. Now I just need to get it out." She put down the scissor, took her canteen and rinsed the bloody area with water.
"Aww! Aw aw SHIT!!"
"Don't be a baby, Johnny." Ghost retorted from beside him.
"I just got shot, Lt., and it fucking stings like a bitch. Have you ever been shot?" The wounded man grumbled to his superior.
"Many times." He answered, shrugging his shoulders.
"Beanpole, how about you help me get some lights over here? Don't wanna pull out healthy skin." Jade gestured at the masked man. If he wants to be chatty then at least he could help a little.
Ghost knelt down as well, pulling out his flashlight and directing it towards the wound. "Now that's better." Jade finally got a good visual clarity, prompting her to touch the skin surrounding it, and opening them up with her fingers. "Alright, Soap. Get ready. No alcohol unfortunately so grit your teeth real hard."
"Yeah." After the Scot's shaky response, Jade used her forceps to enter the wound, exploring the outsides of the bullet, and took hold of it.
"Got it. Stay still." As she very, very slowly fished out the bullet, Soap closed his eyes and rested his head on the car, a grimace on his face as he tried to hold in the pain. Ghost only watched in silence as he still held the flashlight up.
"Aaand it's out." The bullet is finally out of the wound, leaving a little blood trail running down his shoulder which Jade immediately covered with a gauze.
"Seems intact. You're lucky the bullet didn't burst and broke inside." Ghost reacted to the bullet on the tip of the forceps. "Or it'll be a pain in the arse to find all of them."
"Yeah. All those muscles double as a meat shield I guess." Jade joked as she put the bullet down on the cloth rolls, making Soap let out a broken chuckle.
"All that workout finally pays off."
"It certainly did." The MI6 then used forceps on both hands to carefully stitch the wound. The wound was not that big, so it only required around 3 stitches.
As she rolled the bandages around Soap's arm, Ghost started, "We don't know whether the safe house is empty or not. We're on our own."
The ginger responded, "We are. Anyone who points a gun at us, they're hostile. Can't trust anyone unless…"
"Unless?" Soap noticed her pause.
"Unless someone's still not compromised and corrupted. And if there's one, it's Alejandro." She finally finished rolling the bandages, tidying up her equipment on the floor and putting them back on her gear.
The three of them stood up, led by the lieutenant, "Alright, let's get inside."
***********
After discussing about releasing Alejandro from the Shadows, they were now preparing their gears for the battle that was yet to come. Rodolfo had given them all some Mexican Army rations to fill their empty guts. Hours and hours of running and being hunted by Shadows took their energies out to flat battery. Rudy, Soap, and Jade sat together on the wooden crate inside the warehouse, eating away their meal.
Jade was right, if there's someone who is not corrupted, it's Alejandro, and someone close to him.
Much to their surprise, they found Rodolfo hiding in the darkness of the building. He did point his rifle at Soap, but at least he was still vigilant and didn't take anyone as a friendly considering the dreadful situation at hand. The warehouse was packed full with guns and ammunition in all varieties. It's like a second base for the Los Vaqueros. Surely it's smaller in size than the one Graves and his Shadows occupied at the moment, but it would do.
"Where's the lieutenant?" Rudy started.
"Outside. Probably doesn't want us to see his face." Soap answered as he ate the dried beans.
"Why does he wear that? The first time I saw him in the car, I was truly scared." The Mexican remembered saying that he's afraid of ghosts in Spanish to his superior upon seeing his mask.
"Then the mask served its purpose. It's psychological warfare. The less human you look like, the more fear you can strike upon the enemy" The only woman in the house told them, "Imagine a big, hulking man with a skull face, coming at you in a full on black attire, with a full sets of skills that can end your life in seconds. I would be scared."
Hearing that, Rodolfo sighed, "Glad he's on our side."
"Right. Or probably he just wants to hide his ugly face." Soap retorted, making the three of them chuckle.
As she finished her rations, Jade tidied up the plastic containers before standing up, "I'm gonna check on the beanpole. You guys eat away." She patted both of the man's shoulders, which were replied with nods from both men, before she headed out of the warehouse's wooden door where Ghost had headed ten minutes prior.
As she stepped out in the dark of the night, Jade looked up at the Las Almas sky. This will be a long night.
Got betrayed by Shepherd and The Shadows, Soap got shot, they had to survive a town full of people trying to hunt them, and now after only one hour of downtime, the four of them were about to storm the prison to try freeing Alejandro and the Vaqueros.
Taking on a whole garrison of Shadows in the prison compound with just four people? Sounded suicidal of them indeed, but Jade had seen what these people could do. They're trustworthy.
She's not alone anymore.
She's got people to cover her back.
She had him.
Taking a deep breath, she looked around to find out where the man in black went. She looked side to side to see any big, black shape sitting down, but he's nowhere to be seen.
And so, she started to walk to the side of the warehouse, finally finding the big man sitting down, his back to her. Accompanied by a single lamp above him that barely gave any sort of luminescence, she could see that his mask was lifted up, the skull plate sitting on top of his head, indicating that he's indeed eating.
One thing she realized, though, she could see him a little bit stiff on the left shoulder. What confirmed her suspicion was the fact that he touched his left shoulder, before rolling them very very slowly like it's painful to move.
Guess even the Ghost himself wasn't invincible from a bullet.
"Beanpole." Jade softly called to him. Her feminine voice instantly made the man flinch, but not turn around.
A pause, "Midget. Why are you here?" He said, for once his deep, raspy voice was not muffled by the mask.
"Checkin' up on you. You really do like sitting alone in the dark."
He didn't respond with anything. The woman decided to step forward, making the grass crack. Ghost immediately put his hand on his mask, ready to pull it down to wear it, before Jade stopped him, "It's fine. You can keep eating. I promise I won't do anything." Ghost halted his actions for a good five seconds, before putting his hand down again.
Seeing that he's finally relaxed, Jade closed in on his back slowly to where he sat down on the wooden crate. She could see the back of his neck and a little hint of his hair like this, and of course, there's a tint of blood on the junction between his neck and shoulder, just shy away covered by his black collar that was also ripped apart in the area.
"You're injured." Jade spoke slowly to avoid startling him too much.
"...Just a bullet graze. Bloody shadows."
"May I?" Jade asked, and she could see him contemplating, before he lightly nodded. Upon his confirmation, she lightly pulled away his torn collar, finding blood still running down the grazed wound. It's angry red in color, especially being covered by his clothes and his gear the entire time.
Hearing Jade’s huff, the man inquired, "Is it bad?"
"Bad. Even though Soap had a whole bullet lodged in his shoulder, at least the wound was open to the rain to wash it away. Yours were covered by your collar and plate carrier. Infection will suck." He grumbled in response. He surely thought it was nothing, but it definitely needed some attention.
"You can keep eating while I take care of this. Put off your gears first." Jade spoke to the back of his neck, and seeing that he sighed, it seemed that he didn't mind. Ghost took his gear off, as he tried to lift the plate carrier above his head, Jade could see him struggling to fight the pain on his shoulder and decided to lend a hand. Without a word, Jade helped lift them up. Judging by his groan, it must be a major relief after carrying that much weight on his injured shoulder.
After putting the gear down, she started by pouring some water to a cotton wool, pulling the collar away, revealing that the wound is even longer and deeper than she thought. It’s almost half his trapezius. This definitely required some attention. "I'm gonna clean the wound. This'll sting a little.” As she lightly pressed on the wound, Ghost's neck tensed, but he didn’t make a sound, albeit him grabbing his plastic spoon harder that it might snap.
“It’s supposed to be painful, Beanpole. It’s okay if you make a sound.” Jade said with a low tone, not wanting to surprise him, still going on in cleaning the angry red wound. This man is a hard ass sometimes. “At least Soap’s not here to tell you you’re a baby.” the woman retorted, making Ghost scoff involuntarily as he remembered telling Soap the exact same thing earlier.
“Fine,” He finally relented. “It bloody hurts. The only thing that made it right was that I put a knife on the bastard’s neck.”
“Hmm. And were you planning to let this thing be a secret?” She gestured at the wound she’s currently tending to.
Ghost only sighed, "I was going to take care of it myself."
Jade huffed softly behind him, “If you fell down from fever because it's not treated properly, I’m gonna have trouble hauling you up, Beanpole. You’re huge.”
“I’m not gonna fall.” He denied.
“You will if you let this open wound be, which was your plan, isn’t it.” Jade told him off with a slightly louder voice, stopping her hands from cleaning the wound.
“I’ve been shot many times before, Midget, and I’ll take care of myself just fine.”
“But that was when you were alone, Ghost.” Hearing her call his call sign instead of the bastard nickname quite surprised him.
“I know you can take care of yourself just fine. I know that. I think so about myself too. But we’re a team here.” Jade didn’t even realize that her voice sounded more like a worried mother than a colleague. “You’re our commanding officer, and I know you need to take the lead. All this shite happened on your watch, but despite all of that, I need you to tell me if you’re wounded. I will help. We will help.” Ghost had stopped eating now. She’s talking to the back of his head, but he could totally imagine her worried face. From the tone in her voice, he could also tell that she’s not angry. Concerned would be a better word.
“I’ve been in this thing as long as you, Ghost, and God knows how it fucks someone up, but we’ve got each other now.” She finally got back to cleaning his wound, “You said it yourself just now, ‘no one fights alone’, and that includes this. So don’t fight alone, okay?”
Ghost took a deep breath. He did say that, didn’t he. She used his own words to get back at him.
Not hearing any answer, Jade pressed the cotton with slight pressure onto his wound, prompting him to flinch his shoulder and exclaim in pain, “Ow! What the fuck!?”
“Okay??”
“Okay! Fine, Mum!” Ghost finally yielded. “I’ll take your word for it.”
Jade couldn’t help but to scoff at her new nickname, “Don’t ‘Mum’ me, Ghost. I’m just a concerned friend, that is all.” She retorted, fishing the antibiotic cream from her med kit.
“Oh, so now we’re finally friends?”
“Yes. What, were we enemies? I’m gonna apply some antibiotic cream, your wound is very long. Sheesh.”
“Tell me something I don’t know…” He got back to eating his rations. He didn’t like pep talks, but hers actually alleviated some of his burdens. Knowing that someone’s got his back, that he has someone to rely on, that he didn’t have to do this alone… it somehow comforted him.
As Jade pressed a little of the content out of the tube, she thought about the man who’s having his back on her. Hearing that he’s been through a lot of things like her, deep in her mind, she’s glad that someone understands her. And all that she did was understand him. If Jade was in Ghost’s position, who has a lot of responsibilities and burdens on his shoulders, she’d want that reassurance too. The MI6 started to lightly rub on the wound, taking note of covering the entire area.
“Thanks, for having my back.” He continued, “When I heard Johnny’s coming, I thought I’m gonna need to babysit him for a while. But having you here… It makes things easier for me.”
“...Jade.” his deep voice called to her name, not the bastardized nickname, making her flinch in response.
"hm?"
The woman behind him smiled, “A pleasure, Ghost. Cut off a little slack for yourself, alright? You look like the kind of guy who doesn’t take his own advice.”
A chuckle, “Seems so.”
After a while, Ghost finally finished eating his rations, just as Jade finished closing up his injury with the adhesive plasters.
“Abracadabra, you’re healed~!” The woman covered the wound with her warm palm, touching his skin lightly, before covering the area back up with the collar.
Ghost pulled down his mask, before standing up and turned around to face the woman who patched him up. Lifting her head to see the towering figure, she could see his dark eyes looking back at her.
“Thanks, Midget. I owe you for this one.”
She never heard him speak with such sincerity and tenderness before. She swore if not for the dim lighting, he’d caught her cheek turn as red as her hair.
Well, there’s always a first for everything. “You owe me nothing. Anytime, Beanpole.”
********************
“Soap?” Rodolfo called to the man in front of him.
“Hm?”
“Did, uh… Ghost and Jade have something between them?” Hearing the Mexican sergeant’s question, Soap couldn’t help the laughter from his mouth; he had to cover them from spitting his food.
“You see it too, don’t you?” Soap responded with a chuckle, “To answer your question, no, I don’t think they had something. We’ve only known Jade about three years ago, during the conflict for Verdansk.”
“Three years ago?” Rodolfo questioned.
“Yes. The lass were called in by Laswell. She’s fierce, I’ll give her that. However, Ghost wasn’t the kindest person at the time, and there were… trust issues among the group. So he’s the one who started the Midget thingy, and Jade responded fairly by calling Ghost Beanpole.”
The Mexican cooed in acknowledgement, getting back to his rations. “They’re very… compatible together.”
“You’re right on point on that, Hermano.”

Hope you loved it! (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)

Hunter
His senses, his perception, are always alert and very attentive around you. Actually, you are not that long together yet, but nevertheless, you can no longer count on your fingers how many times he has already saved you from injuries and greater damage. Be it tripping at an inopportune moment, dropping dangerous objects or accidentally leaning against unsafe/dangerous objects. Of course, he can't be around you 24/7, so he frequently tends to minor wounds you accidentally inflict on yourself, like cuts while cooking, or minor burns and bruises. Hunter, meanwhile, has developed yet another sense, another antenna, that is solely concerned with you. Whenever he's near you, his neural pathways buzz as soon as you trip, falter, or drop something, and he's on the spot in a flash. Luckily for you, he likes to do that and even if he sighs more often or breathes a sigh of relief when he can prevent the worst from happening, he'll never complain. "I got you, darling"
Echo
He sighs as he grabs you in the back of your jacket and pulls you back, keeping you from falling off the ramp. "Sometimes you scare me Love, one of these days you're going to fall when I'm not around and crack your skull or something," he says grumbling. You smile crookedly and say, "I'm trying not to do that." "So far you're not doing very well," Echo says, kissing your cheek. Tending to minor cuts, bruises and the like on you are already routine for Echo, as is the quick grab to keep you from falling. His reflexes and senses can't keep up with Hunter, but he's not too far off either. In any case, around him, it's extremely rare for anything to happen to you, despite your clumsiness. He is constantly worried and expresses it, but at the same time he is tireless in protecting you, sometimes even from yourself.
Wrecker
You are lying on the floor. Somehow you tripped over something, maybe even your own feet, hit your head and went down unconscious. "Hey, sweetie, you okay?" You open your eyes and look up into Wrecker's face, which hovers over you with concern. The next moment, you're carefully picked up by two strong hands and set down on one of the bunks. You blink and say, "Yeah, I think so, fell and hit my head". Wrecker raises his eyebrows. "Again? Now that's what I'm starting to worry about," Wrecker says as he carefully examines your head. He finds a bump, but no open wound. "Maybe Tech or Echo should do a scan, just in case," he says seriously. Wrecker always keeps an eye on you when you're around him, and his strong hand keeps providing protection and safety, but you keep managing to accidentally hurt yourself. "I have a headache," you say softly, rubbing the bump gently. Wrecker kisses your forehead and says, "I'm not surprised, but don't worry, sweetie, we'll take care of it." Wrecker is very patient and a total softie when it comes to you.
Tech
He is engrossed in his Holopad, eagerly calculating a few things to follow up on one of his hunches, when he hears a small noise, accompanied by a surprised little exclamation, followed by a slightly louder rumble. He blinks. Lowers the holopad and finally sighs softly. "My love?" He hears your voice from the hallway, "Um, yeah, over here. Could you maybe help me out for a second?" Tech hastily puts the holopad aside, stands up and walks into the hallway. His eyes widen in surprise when he sees that you've managed to stumble into the utility closet and got tangled up in Hunter's fishing gear. Tech says dryly, "My dear, you really do have a special talent." You sigh, "Don't joke around now please honey, just help me instead". Tech shakes his head but comes closer and starts untangling you from fishing line and other items and finally pulls you out of the chamber. "I really can't let you out of my sight," he says gently and at the same time reprovingly. You shrug your shoulders and reply meekly, "I'm really not doing this on purpose, Tech." "It's okay," he says with a smile, kissing your cheek, fishing a plastic bait out of your hair, and adding, "I'm just glad you're usually lucky enough to avoid major injury."
Crosshair
He hears a clang, then a rumble. "Let me guess, you're home again, honey?" he asks dryly without looking up. You say just as dryly, "No, I'm a burglar". With a sigh, Crosshair gets up from his chair and walks into the kitchen. You've managed to knock over a vase and an end table, tearing your pantyhose in the process. "A pretty talentless burglar," he says, grabbing your arm and pulling you back to your feet, "Did you hurt yourself?" You shake your head and sigh. "No, I don't think so." Crosshair crouches down and looks at your leg, just a run in the tights, no scrapes in the skin underneath. He stands back up, kisses your cheek, maneuvers you around the debris, and finally picks up the pieces. Crosshair usually counters your clumsiness in his own way with jokes and sarcasm, but always watches out for you, and takes care of your wounds and the property damage you cause. He grumbles now and then, but he is much more patient and caring than he sometimes pretends to be.

“Alright, I’ll go get some firewood while you work on the tent.” You say as you reach for the small hand axe from the camping gear.
"If you wait a little bit, I can go with you." Minho says as he unloads more of the gear from the rented van.
"I got it, don't worry," You wink at your boyfriend before trying to leave again.
"At least take this," He pulls something from his pocket and tosses it to you. You manage to barely catch it, turning it over to reveal that it's a walkie talk. You give him a big smile before going on your way.
You and your boyfriend were taking some well deserved time off in the woods. He loves camping, and while you don't necessarily favor the activity, you'll take any chance to spend time with him. The past year had been busy for the both of you. You were busy with school and work while Minho was busy with a few comebacks and a world tour. When you two did have free time together, you mainly would do local things or just stay home. Now that he has a longer break before they start working on their next comeback, you two decided to spend the weekend away from all distractions camping. The odds of running into a fan are slim and there is a spot for Minho to fish, which he loves.
Nature isn’t necessarily your thing. Sure, it’s peaceful and calming, but you can do without the bugs and fear that a wild animal is going to attack you at any given moment. But the spot that Minho picked is beautiful. It’s quiet and covered with trees. Green for miles. You two brought a tent but you rented a spot that has a small cabin so if it gets too cold, you can run inside. You’re just glad that you have a place to use the bathroom and to safely store your food. The idea of sleeping under the stars is appealing.
As you walk you keep your eyes low, picking up sticks and small logs that are in your path. You put the small logs in a backpack you had and held onto the sticks. Hopefully you could carry enough back to the campsite so you won’t have to make a second trip later.
“Ah, Hannie,” You stop on your walk when you see a squirrel sitting on a stump, eating something.
You pull out your phone and try to take a picture so you can joke to Minho that you ran into Han. Keeping your distance, you tried to stay where you were to take a picture. The picture is too blurry and you have no choice but to get closer. You gently put down your backpack, hand axe, and sticks. You take small steps until you get close enough to take a decent picture. You quickly take the picture, not realizing that the flash was on. The sudden burst of light startles the docile creature and it charges towards you. You shriek and try to turn and run. Unfortunately for you, you trip over your backpack and briefly fly in the air before landing hard on the ground.
“Fuck me,” you mutter to yourself. The squirrel is no where near you, having retreated rather than attack. You slowly sit up, thankful you didn’t land anywhere near the hand axe. Sitting up, you dust yourself off before trying to stand up. You stand up, putting pressure on your right knee. Once you’re fully stood up, you shift more weight to your left leg causing a sudden pain from your left knee to shoot through your body. You bite your lip as you shift back to putting most of your body weight on your right side.
“Y/N, are you okay?” You hear Minho’s voice come from your bag. You limp to your backpack and grab the walkie talkie before he could worry.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m heading back right now. I wondered a bit far out so it’ll take a while.” You pull your backpack on and pick up the sticks and hand axe and slowly limp towards the campsite.
“Okay, just be careful.” It’s too late for that. You have medicine and a first aid kit back at the cabin. Minho can’t know you’re hurt. If he finds out, he’s going to want to go home to take care of you, ruining your trip. It’s probably just a sprain anyway, you can manage with that. You’re just camping so you can spend most of your time sitting and relaxing. You should be fine by the time you have to go home.
***
You were not fine. The pain was not going away. Medicine was no longer helping either, you’ve woken up a few times in the middle of the night in paint. Minho didn’t seem to notice, he’d be all over you if he did.
Luckily, after two miserable days, you were finally heading home. Unluckily, the car was at least a mile away from the campsite. You took a pain pill while you and Minho were packing everything up, but every step still sent electrifying pain through your body.
Pop!
You step on a large rock to get down to a lower level of the path just as your knee gives out, making you crash down with a loud thud. Minho turns around to see what your dropped and panics when he sees you on the ground.
“Y/N, what happened?” He rushes towards you and tries to help you up.
“Nothing, I just tripped on a rock.” You take his hand let him pull you up.
He pulls you to your feet with a swift yank. You put even weight on both your legs out of habit. You let out a yelp as you go down again, the pain in your knee now unbearable and excruciating.
“There’s noway that’s from tripping over a rock. What happened?” Minho kneels down and swipes a thumb across your cheek, wiping a tear that was now falling from your eyes.
“It’s nothing. I just tripped.” You choked. You should be able to tell him what happened now, but you know he’ll feel bad if he knew you got hurt days ago and kept it a secret for his sake.
“If you don’t tell me what happened, how am I supposed to help?” He snaps, terrified of how badly you could be hurt if you’ve been reduced to tears. You hesitate for a few minutes before sighing. It’s a fight you know you are going to lose.
“I almost got attacked by a squirrel a couple of days ago and tripped over my backpack.”
“Show me where it hurts. Your ankle?”
“No, my left knee. But when I fell this time I heard a pop.” Minho rolls up your pant leg, sweats because that was the easiest thing you could put on today. When get gets to your knee you both gasp when you see that your knee doubled in size. He blinks for a few seconds before he helps you take off your backpack and grabs all the things you were carrying.
“I’ll be back. Don’t go anywhere.” He says standing up with everything the two of you brought on the trip.
“Not like I could go anywhere." You chuckle, lightly joking. He shoots you a look to tell you that nothing about this situation is funny.
You sit there in pain for about 20 minutes before Minho makes his way back to you. He scoops you up in one fluid motion and immediately starts walking towards the car again.
"You're just going to carry me to the car?"
"It's faster,"
"But we're like half a mile away, maybe more." You weren't even sure how he made it to the car and back in 20 minutes in the first place. He must have been running.
"I'm fast," You sigh, giving up on trying to talk to him right now.
***
"This time," Minho says suddenly after the doctor leaves the room.
"What?" You sit up from your position on the examination bed.
"Earlier you said 'when I fell this time,' meaning you fell earlier without telling me." Minho is staring at you, blinking slowly
Minho took you to the emergency room where you two found out that you had completely torn your ACL and that you would have to have surgery in about 2 weeks. The last thing you wanted was to have Minho take care of you while you had and recovered from surgery. You're used to doing things on your own and not having to rely on anyone. It's how you were raised, and it's one of the things you tried to maintain in your relationship with Minho. He doesn't expressly say it, but he always tries to take care of you and only backs down after you tell him to stop.
"I--"
"Why didn't you tell me you fell?"
"Because it was just a sprain before. It was no big deal."
"It's a big enough deal for you to need surgery."
"I only need surgery because of the second fall."
"There wouldn't have been a second fall if you told me about the first one."
"I just didn't want to ruin the trip. You've been working really hard the past few months and I wanted you to enjoy the weekend we had together."
"Well now I'm going to look back on this as the weekend where I had a great time while you secretly hobbled around me for two whole days."
"I didn't hobble around."
"Y/N," He places his hand on your good knee, "you have to stop hiding when you're hurt from me. I'm your boyfriend, I just want to help."
"I know,"
"You have to let me in sometimes."
"Trust me, I learned my lesson." You kiss Minho's cheek and lean back on the bed.

Already posted this on ao3, but I thought Tumblr would like it too. A lovely commission courtesy of Valacre- cecaelia Skull getting to show his spookier and scarier side.
Some TWs, for this! Bleeding, near drowning, kidnapping and general yandere behaviour, vomiting, being pressured into eating. Proceed with caution if these things bother you!
You felt calm. Very calm.
You really shouldn’t have felt calm. You were probably actively dying. Sinking deeper and deeper into an ocean abyss, bleeding from a head wound you sustained from thrashing against coral in a panic, you couldn’t tell if the way the world was darkening around you was from your consciousness slipping away or your depth increasing. Perhaps a bit of both.
... But... you just felt calm. The toxins had already well kicked into your brain.
That was the thing, about sinking too deep in scuba gear. At depths, pressure changed the properties of whatever gas was in your tank. Unless you had a special concoction, suited for the extreme conditions, a tank of normal air would gradually become more and more toxic to your body the further down you went.
The regulator in your mouth, the very thing keeping you alive... was also the thing slowly killing you.
Nitrogen narcosis, right? You thought, nearly giggling. We learnt about it in dive class. What a dumb name, for something that’s gonna kill me.
The fact that you were sinking didn’t bother you. The fact that you were dying bought no panic. In fact, you could hardly remember why you panicked before. Again, you nearly laughed... you were so dumb, it was entirely your own fault you were in this position. Chasing a beautiful fish over the reef, further and further, not even noticing your dive group disappearing from sight.
The nature had been so beautiful, the fish so pretty... the waters so calm.
You went over an edge, the coral shelving away. You hadn’t seen the bottomless, terrifying void until it had already opened up beneath you.
All struggling did was make you hit your head on a jagged coral branch. Nothing could stop the cold current from sucking you down.
You barely registered the plaintive beeping of the dive computer on your wrist. Quietly, uselessly, trying to warn you that you were getting too deep.
... Eventually, your regulator slipped out of your mouth.
Huh. Oh well.
...
Lights.
Lights filled your vision. Lights in a rainbow of colours, beautiful and vibrant, catching in the glass of your dive mask and casting across your face. The glimmering tucked around your fading mind, drawing it upward, drawing it away from the brink of nothingness.
A warm red colour moved closer, and closer, and closer. Pretty. The other nice colours still surrounded you, but the red was the most dominant of them. It was a welcome break, from the endless black and blue that you were sinking into... you felt big hands, on either side of your face, a comforting sensation.
Is this what dying is like? You stared at the warm red. It’s nothing like what people said it would be like.
You could hear a soft humming. You felt it in your core, too. The drunken, narcotic-esque sensation of the gases was slowly replaced by a much softer and more pleasant emotional state. Less giggly... more peaceful.
Something touched to your mouth. Warm. And suddenly, you could breathe again. A distant, disconnected sense of relief in the back of your head- like despite all of the easy feelings around you, deep down, you were still afraid to die.
... The red glow grew brighter. As it did, the peaceful feeling picked you up, and carried you away.
You were more than happy to let it.
///---///
Your eyes opened.
...
You didn’t expect that.
Immediately, panic rushed through you. It was so dark, so horribly dark - am I dead!? - you sat up, head rushing with a wave of nausea, your lips and fingers were heavy and tingly and your eyes felt as if they were swirling in your skull.
You instantly threw up seawater.
... A cave. You were in a cave. You let out a slow breath, it quivered slightly at the end, eyes darting around the chamber and desperately attempting to gather as much info as possible, hand coming up to wipe your mouth. The walls were black and glossy, seemingly volcanic, and the ground beneath you was dry.
... Wait. You forced yourself to slow down. How can I see?
You turned around. Just behind you, the dry rock shelved away into a large pool. And a faint, blueish-green light emanated from all around its edges, where the mirror-like black water met the stone. Algae? Plankton? Whatever it was, it was just enough light to see by, and it was undeniably beautiful.
... You shuffled over to the water’s edge. Kneeling by it, you leant over, and drew your hand through the still water- the cave grew brighter, as a trail of light followed your palm, flickering across your face and casting soft ripples over the sloped walls.
... The panic didn’t leave you completely. It probably wouldn’t, until you were curled up in your own bed at home. But... something about the bioluminescence helped your emotions settle. It was genuinely beautiful to look at, and the sound of moving water filled your ears, grounding you to the moment. You weren’t dead at the bottom of the seafloor, you weren’t being eaten by some terrible beast. Though you struggled to make sense of the cave’s dimensions in the low light, it certainly wasn’t small and you were grateful to be spared any nightmarish claustrophobia. Not to mention the fact that you were grateful you had light at all.
You took your hand out of the water. Watching the droplets fall, creating their own little flashes of light, made you suddenly realise something.
... The cave wasn’t the only thing that was dry. You were bone dry, too. You touched your dry hand all over yourself, but felt no damp. How long have I been asleep?
For a moment, you suddenly worried that you shouldn’t be breathing stale cave air, and you reached up as if to cover your mouth. But... you also realised that you had no idea how long you’d been unconscious for. Clearly, long enough for you to dry.
... Your wetsuit was gone. So was all of your scuba gear. You looked down at yourself, confused; dressed only in your swimsuit and rash vest, your tanks and hoses weren’t anywhere to be found. Even your dive computer was missing from your wrist.
Looking up only confused you further. No longer frightened about stale air or whether or not you were dead, you noticed there were clothes laid against the rocks closest to the pool edge. Clothes you didn’t recognise- clothes that absolutely weren’t yours. A slightly damp towel, and a very damp shirt, placed neatly and flat... as if someone had taken their sopping wet items off after coming out of the water, and laid them out to dry. Given how warm (yet still somehow fresh) the cave air felt, you could definitely see things drying.
Possibilities flashed through your mind. Did you do that, then pass out and forget? Or was there someone else here? You weren’t sure whether to be afraid of that possibility.
“... You’re not gonna get much done sitting on the floor.” You murmured to yourself, instinctively wanting to fill the silence. Regardless of your quietness your voice bounced off the cave walls. “Might as well have a look around.”
Eventually, you forced yourself to your feet. You were a little wobbly... but nonetheless, you were alive.
The cave was, to your surprise, empty aside from you. No other signs of life. No spiders, no worms, no bats or flies- just those smooth dark walls and the shine of the reflected pool light. It was a decently sized cave, more than enough room for you to stand to your full height and stretch your arms above your head. Gradually, you shuffled your way into the back; the roof edged down slightly, before rising up again. You supposed that counted as a second part of the cave.
The second chamber was still a good size, but it was much smaller than the first chamber. It felt a fraction cooler. The light from the pool had grown so dim that you had to use your hands to navigate, feeling the walls to make sure you didn’t fall over- very faintly, above you, you could make out a hole. Though no light was coming through, you felt fresh air on your face... you let yourself enjoy some relief at the knowledge that there was a source of breathable air. You weren’t going to suffocate.
... Though you felt around more, there was no third chamber, and no potential way out aside from the crack directly above you.
And... nobody else was in the cave.
The clothes by the pool must’ve been me. You thought, a strange sensation falling over you. Maybe I have a concussion...?
...
Wait. Your head.
You gasped aloud, remembering that you had hit your head on coral. You reached up to touch your head, expecting blood, expecting matted hair, expecting something, anything at all.
... Your fingers touched dry seaweed.
You paused. The seaweed... it wrapped all the way around your head. Like someone had wrapped it for you. And you felt no pain when you touched the area that you had hit against the coral- in fact, when you moved the seaweed aside, your fingers felt nothing. No scab, no scar, nothing. It was like you had never been hurt.
...
Something wasn’t right about this. The strange sensation grew, uneasiness intensifying. You stumbled back into the first chamber, eyes on the floor to make sure you didn’t trip over anything in the half-darkness, you wanted to look at those damp clothes again to be sure you didn’t recognise them.
You looked up, over to the bioluminescent pool, mostly to see clear light again and partially to try and calm yourself with its gentle blue glow.
... A large, glowing red eye stared back at you.
...
You were frozen. Completely. More than just your physical body- it felt as if the air around you stopped, as if your blood in your veins turned to ice, as if your heart paused in its beating and your breath turned to stone in your throat.
...
The eye didn’t disappear. It wasn’t a stress hallucination, it wasn’t a mirage. As the leadden moments ticked on, the eye remained.
Silent.
... The eye... was in a skull. It twitched faintly. Only half of the head was above the water, the algae faintly shining where the sides of its face met the water. A vicious crack in the top of its cranium... just from the size of the top half of its face, you knew it was huge.
A siren. It must be a siren. A siren big and powerful enough to recover from such a frightening and severe injury as a head crack.
Trapped alone in a cave with a siren.
The realisation filled you with a numb, hollow kind of fear. It spread through every limb like a pale fire eating through paper.
Am I breathing? I don’t know if I’m breathing.
...
The siren, silently, lifted a few more inches out of the water. The only sound was the faint rippling of the pool. Droplets rolled down a smile of razor teeth.
...
You screamed.
How could you not? Pinned in a small cave, with a beast right out of your nightmares. For a split second, a flash of confusion across its huge face. You tried to scramble away and back into the second chamber, somewhere you’d be out of its reach.
Its smile quickly returned. In an instant, massive black tentacles shot out of the water, sending up sprays of light; though you were aware of the siren’s size you had no idea of its dexterity. Before you could even turn around to run, tentacles seized your arms and legs; wet half-sentient masses of muscle wrapping tight around you. You felt the suckers press your skin, the slimy dark limbs squeezing and twisting, your bones suddenly felt so fragile and your screams so useless. Your voice just bounced off the smooth cave walls.
The tentacles pulled down, and instantly your legs gave way under you. He started dragging you toward him, toward the water- you watched in horror as his grin only grew, razor mouth and feverish red eye growing closer and closer. Death itself, pulling you in, images of those teeth driving into you made you begin to lose feeling in your extremities.
Like a child realising there was nowhere to run from the monster, you squeezed your eyes shut. You didn’t want to look, you didn’t want to see the teeth getting any closer, you didn’t want to see the eye fill your vision. You didn’t want to see it coming.
The pulling stopped. You were numb, you’d drawn into your head, you didn’t know if you were even still screaming anymore.
Crack.
The sound of something breaking made any sound you might’ve been making catch in your throat.
...
... Except... you didn’t feel any pain. Seconds ticked by, and you didn’t feel the heat of blood, or the sensation of shock setting in. The tentacles hadn’t moved, still holding onto you tightly.
Whatever had crunched, it wasn’t your bones.
... You were still hyperventilating. But confusion allowed you to, slowly, open up your eyes.
The horrible grin was inches from your face, leering down at you. As was the equally horrible eye, bathing you in an overpowering red glow.
... But also in front of you, was two sides of a cracked sea urchin.
...
You stared blankly. The siren... he was holding them. One half in either massive clawed hand. It was a decently sized urchin, full of golden edible uni.
One hand was big enough to seize your face, crush your head.
...
The siren, upon getting no response from you, moved the split urchin a few inches closer. Like he was showing it to you. You tried to lean away, but he just responded by moving it slightly closer again.
... You glanced up at his face. It was a horrifying thing to behold. Jagged misshapen teeth, a half shattered skull... scars lining his body. That big iris, unblinkingly staring into your Soul. Not giving you an inch of space, as if he wanted to consume you just through eye contact.
...
Back down to the uni. Moments kept passing. Moments where he didn’t maul you to death.
...
... Wait.
No...
You pulled in a little frightened breath.
He didn’t like that, a flicker of something else crossing his expression. That same expression as earlier, when you screamed. Like he didn’t like it- like he was getting upset.
Memories were starting to return, now. Fuzzy recollections of lights filling your vision. Alive in a cave, with new clothes drying on the rocks, your injuries bound and healed...
... This siren had saved your life. Hadn’t he? Dressed your head wound, removed your heavy gear. He rescued you, put you in what must be his cave.
... He was trying to feed you.
Oh no.
You didn’t have a choice, did you? You felt like if you didn't eat the food, he would eat you. Slowly, your hands came up, they were shaking almost comically... you reached forward, taking one of the sea urchin halves.
Judging from his reaction, it was the correct move. His unbearable smile inched wider. And across his tentacles, a dim pulsation of green and yellow light, for seemingly no reason other than happiness.
You didn’t have anything to remove the edible parts with, so you had to use your fingers. Your hands were shaking so much that it took a few tries to actually get it out. But you managed, eventually.
... It was good uni. Incredibly fresh, salty, slightly sweet. But you had to force yourself to eat it. You felt intensely sick from the fear, your head was swimming and several times you had to suppress your gagging. Don't upset him. Just eat it. The food, though the sweetness did ease some of your dizziness, was impossible to enjoy in any way; the entire time you ate, the siren stared at you. He had an intensity only a wild beast could muster. Inches from you, so close you felt his massive breaths washing over your face... watching every. Single. Bite.
... It couldn't have taken long. But it felt like it took hours. Finally, you swallowed the last bit, and to your immense relief he didn’t try to make you eat the other half of the urchin.
He seemed pleased- for now.
... His free hand lifted up. You flinched, closing your eyes again; you felt a large claw trace over your cheek.
It only confirmed your fears.
Sirens don't feed just anyone. They fed their children, their family, or their...
... Their mate.
The tentacle grip around you finally eased. Slowly but surely, pacified by your eating, he withdrew; though the wet limbs dragged across you as they retreated, like he was savouring every moment of contact. The red light of his eye became less and less dominant, the calming blue of the pool returning to your vision.
... He made a sound. It sounded like a deep growl. But given the grin on his massive face, and his obviously pleased disposition... it was probably closer in nature to a purr.
He slipped under the water’s surface, leaving only a glowing ripple behind.
...
... You forced yourself to slow your breathing. You forced yourself to stop thinking about the terrifying implication of what you’d just experienced, but nothing could stop a few tears slipping down your face, nor a few shuddering breaths escaping from your chest.
A siren... was keeping you. Probably as his mate. Not just any siren- a massive, terrifying cecaelia, who clearly had no intention of letting you go. That's why he left you with most of your things, but took all your scuba gear, wasn't it? So you couldn't dive out of this cave.
No... no, you couldn’t think about that. You swallowed the fear, only letting a few more frightened sobs free before scrubbing the tears off your cheeks.
This isn’t ideal. But... you’re alive, at least. You thought. You wouldn’t have survived if he didn’t intervene. So this is better than nothing, right?
Yeah. Yeah, right. You bit the inside of your cheek. You needed to be thankful you were, at least, alive.
You’re alive. Your wounds have all been tended to and healed. You’re safe, somewhere warm and dry, with a supply of fresh air. The giant siren might be freaky, but he bought you food, and even clothes.
He clearly wants to keep you alive. You’re gonna be okay.
“I’m gonna be okay.” You said, weakly... to nobody except the cave walls.
///---///
Skull watched, silently, as the boat moved further and further away. Only once it was out of sight did he allow himself to move through the water again, iris re-igniting. If it had come too close to the den entrance he would’ve attacked.
... He was closer to shore than he liked to be. But it was important he was close to fresh air, and places he could source human things from. For you.
His chest... it warmed so much, at the thought of you. His mate. He had been alone so long, desperate for so long. Now, he finally had company.
... Sure, you were afraid. But it was only natural for a potential partner to be resistant to first advances. It just meant he needed to keep you in the den, and prove he’d be a strong, capable mate. Right? One of his tentacles lashed out, catching a fish. The other divers with you, the members of your pack, were clearly idiots- they didn’t protect you. They didn’t even notice when you were in distress. They didn’t save you when you were hurt... not like he did.
He felt himself warming even more, pride returning, tentacle immediately crushing the fish. He rescued you. He held you close in your weakest moment, and filtered air into his mouth for you. He stemmed your bleeding, he cradled you in his arms, saved you from the brink of death. He held you close for hours, blanketing you with healing magic until he was certain you were stable, nearly killing himself from the exhaustion of ensuring you would be safe.
He was a good mate. Fish blood seeped out into the water around him. You would see, eventually, how good he was. All he had to do was keep you in one place, and prove it to you, no matter how much you fought him.
All he needed was time.

Eddie X restaurant X chopsticks lol
Couldn't decide if I wanted lovesick Eddie or mischievous Eddie, so I went with both 🤷‍♀️
Warnings: mentions of smut (but nothing actually happens), reader has shitty parents
WC: 1.4k oops
--
Laying in the back of Eddie’s van, head resting on his bare chest and intertwining your cherry-red nails with his jet black ones, you should feel completely at ease. The hazy post-sex glow envelops you both, and you snuggle in closer to him, trying to alleviate the anxiety bubbling in your chest.
“What’s going on, Sweetheart?” he murmurs into your hair, pressing a tender kiss to your scalp. You’ve only been together for three months, but he already knows when something’s eating you. There’s no point in trying to lie to him.
“My, um, my parents want to meet you,” you mumble, feeling your cheeks heat up in embarrassment. “When I go home in a few weeks.” You’d only moved to Indianapolis, a short forty-minute drive from your hometown, but it’s far enough that you don’t get to see your family very often.
Eddie breathes a sigh of relief. “‘S that all?” He rubs your shoulder, nuzzling into your neck so that his curly hair tickles your shoulders. “Jesus, I thought you were breaking up with me or somethin’.” He kisses across your collarbones, sending shivers of pleasure down your spine.
“They’re just so…pretentious,” you tell him, rolling your eyes. “Like, we can’t just order pizza at home; they want to take us out for sushi.”
“Sushi?” Eddie wrinkles his nose. “As in…raw fish? And seaweed?” He puffs out his cheeks. “You’re lucky ‘m so crazy ‘bout you, baby.”
Somehow, that sentiment isn’t comforting. Because you know that Eddie would do damn near anything for you, even endure a sushi dinner with your high-strung parents, but you can’t promise that they’ll treat him with the respect he deserves. They’d always imagined you being with some well-to-do trust fund city boy, not a guy from a trailer park in Hawkins, Indiana. Eddie came to Indianapolis with just his guitar and a dream, and while his goal of being a rockstar hadn’t quite taken off yet, he was one of the hardest working people you’d ever met. Working at the record store during the day, playing bar gigs at night, and making time for you in between. You didn’t know how he managed it. And through it all, he never once made you feel like an obligation or a burden.
And so, weeks later, you and Eddie sit side-by-side in your Toyota Corolla as you pull into the restaurant parking lot. Eddie offered to drive his van, but you knew that just hearing the way the gears grind would unnerve your parents. Instead, you made some excuse about your car getting better gas mileage, and he’d gone along with it.
“We’re here,” you announce through gritted teeth, killing the engine. You grip your boyfriend’s hand, calloused from years of guitar playing. “God, I feel like I’m leading you into the lion’s den.”
Eddie’s quiet for a moment—a rarity for him—before he finally asks the question that’s been wracking his brain since you’d told him about this dinner. “If your parents don’t like me, are you gonna…” He can’t even finish the thought, looking down at the floor mats, a pinkish tinge coloring his cheeks.
“Oh, Eds.” Your heart splinters at the mere thought of leaving him. “No, I would never. I love my parents, but I hate their snap judgments. I know who you are, and I love who you are, and that’s what matters.” You manage a smile and start to open your door.
“Wait!” Eddie suddenly exclaims, leaping from his seat and running to your side of the car. He holds the door open, waiting for you to unbuckle your seatbelt. “Allow me, m’lady.”
You can’t help but giggle as he takes your hand and helps you out of the car. “Thank you, kind sir,” you reply with a small curtsy.
Eddie looks around, checking if the coast is clear before giving your ass a light smack. You gasp at the sudden contact, but he just chuckles. “Had to sneak one in before I gotta be on my best behavior.”
Walking into the restaurant hand-in-hand, you find your parents sitting at a booth by the window. “Mom, Dad,” you start after kissing them both ‘hello,’ “this is Eddie. My boyfriend. Eddie, these are my parents.” While you know Eddie will pick up on the strain in your voice, you hope your parents will remain oblivious.
“Nice to meet you both,” Eddie greets them, extending his hand for your dad to shake. But the older man just looks at it and frowns.
“Is that nail polish?” he asks, furrowing his brows. “A bit girly, don’t you think?”
Off to a great start.
“It really completes his stage image,” you jump in, desperately trying to save a flustered Eddie. “He’s an amazing guitarist. Even has his own band!”
This piques your mom’s interest. “Oh,” she says, smiling politely. “What kind of music do you play? I’ve always loved The Beatles.”
“Um, mostly metal,” Eddie shrugs. “Ozzy, Dio, Metallica?”
Your mom’s expression falters. “I can’t say I’m familiar with their work.” She makes no attempt to continue the conversation, and you each stare at your menus in awkward silence.
The waiter’s arrival is a welcome disruption. You order a tuna roll and a California roll for you and Eddie to share, trying to keep the discussion light. Your parents ask about work, and you give enough detail to satisfy them without warranting further questions.
“So, Eddie,” your dad asks, making direct eye contact with your boyfriend, “what do you do for a living?”
Eddie grins proudly. “I manage a record store. Worked my way up from stock boy; now, I basically run the place.” He glances at you and gives you a look that says, Nailed it. But you’ve been down this road before.
Your father considers his response. “Hmm,” he finally says, “I didn’t know they hired people with tattoos for managerial positions.”
You cringe as Eddie’s face falls. “Um, Mom,” you stammer nervously, picking at an invisible hangnail, “how’s Grandma?”
Temporarily reprieved from the interrogation, Eddie leans back in his seat and discretely squeezes your hand. You squeeze back, making a mental note to apologize profusely for your parents’ behavior.
When dinner arrives, you only have a moment of calm before the next crisis presents itself. Eddie unravels his cloth napkin to reveal chopsticks. Fucking chopsticks. A man who could—and had—eat spaghetti with his hands, and you’d forgotten to warn him about the chopsticks.
“If you need a fork—” you start in a hushed whisper, but Eddie shakes his head, expertly using the utensils to pick up a piece of the tuna roll, gently coating it in soy sauce and popping it into his mouth.
What the fuck?
The rest of the meal is filled with mundane chatter, and you’re just grateful that your parents stopped grilling your boyfriend. The boyfriend who suddenly has the ability to wield chopsticks like he’s been using them his whole life.
“Eddie,” you hiss under your breath as your mom excuses herself to the restroom and your dad tries to flag over the waiter for a drink refill, “since when do you know how to use chopsticks?”
Eddie gives one of his signature mischievous smirks. “Been ordering Chinese takeout everyday for lunch this week, just so I could learn.” He presses a chaste kiss to your cheek. “Impressed?”
You nod enthusiastically. “Very.”
“Good.” There’s a twinkle in his eyes, and he lowers his voice to whisper in your ear: “Because I’m gonna need a reward for sitting through this dinner, and I’d like to show you what else these fingers can do.”
Your eyes widen. “Okay,” you turn towards your father, “Dad, we’ve gotta go. I forgot I told my boss that I’d turn in a project by midnight tonight,” you babble, reaching for your purse.
“It’s only 6:30,” your dad protests, glancing at his wristwatch.
“Yeah, well, it’s a big project. Massive.” You awkwardly hold your arms out wide to emphasize your point. It’s not until you hear Eddie stifle a laugh that you realize the implication you’ve made. “Well, bye. See you soon!” You take Eddie’s hand and practically sprint out of the restaurant.
“So,” he says once you’re back in the safety of your Toyota, waggling his eyebrows teasingly, “massive, huh?”

grian’s new episode got me going hm
might probably do a gem-centric one soon because they make each other worse
-
He wouldn’t let go.
Grian clutched onto the fishing rod, his grip having worn down the wood by now. It was a week into the server. It felt like an eternity.
Sometimes he forgot what came before, before he started fishing.
He recalled, yes. Things like the big moon, Grumbot, whatever. They seemed less memories and more fragmented experiences just laying around waiting for someone to claim them.
It was like his mind was a vase, and the ocean had smashed it into a million tiny little pieces, left for him to fish out.
Another salmon. Grian let out a short, harsh shout and threw it in a nearby barrel and cast his line again.
And again, and again.
There was one rod, seven or eight lines. He peered through the web of black lines and distinguished the single working one. The ocean kept fooling with him like that.
“It kind of looks like a net,” Gem’s voice chirped behind him. They didn’t bother with greetings now. They just talked about fishing.
“I don’t even know how this happened,” he said.
“At least you can get mending ten times as fast now.”
“No, only one works.”
“That’s unfortunate.” Then, having exhausted all possible subjects of conversation, they lapsed into an awkward pause. Grian caught another fish. Cod.
Gem made to leave, but couldn’t resist a final comment.
“By the way, you should sleep. And, uh, shave, unless you’re going for that rugged aesthetic.”
She left.
Was it that obvious? Grian wondered. That he was addicted?
Come to think of it, he hadn’t thought of himself for so many days. He’d just been fishing, dragged himself to chip away at his base, and then went back to fishing.
He stared at himself in the water.
Oh.
Beard, check. Eyebags, check. Suspenders and a beanie for some reason. A bobber hanging from his waist and his pants dipped in seaweed. His hair was overgrown and soaked. There was even a patch on his sweater, for goodness sake.
Grian only felt it now. How had he not noticed it before? Was he just that focused on fishing? His hand subconsciously wandered to his face and brushed against the scales.
The what.
Grian spun around, looking for a clearer mirror than the water, rubbing his cheek in disbelief. Scales, wet and smooth like a fish. He should know. He’d handled thousands of them in a week.
He glanced at his arm, the texture very fishy in both ways. His heart dropped. He just wanted mending, not this. He was supposed to be the fisherman, not the bloody catch!
“Gem, Gemgemgemgem!” He yelled.
Gem turned. “What?”
“I think I’m turning into a fish!”
To her credit, Gem didn’t react much. She did run closer, but she didn’t scream or anything. She just said, “Hmm. Same.”
“What do you mean, same?” Grian yelped.
She rolled her eyes and pulled up her sleeve, revealing the same scales. “It’s probably a side effect, chill. Impulse wasn’t actually a dwarf last season, he just started growing shorter. It’s the Hermitcraft air or something.”
Grian stared at her, gears in his brain turning furiously to process her words. “Didn’t you guys base near the water?”
“That’s true, that’s true. I don’t think that was it, though.” Gem said, shrugging nonchalantly. “Anyway, I need to build. See ya.”
She sauntered away.
Grian didn’t have the presence of mind to call her back. He dropped the rod he’d been clutching this whole time and stared at his hands, moist from sweat.
He was short of breath, and after fifteen seconds he realised it wasn’t just from the panic. He physically couldn’t breathe.
Fish can’t survive on land.
Before he could think, before he remembered he was human, Grian leaped into the water, which enveloped him comfortingly like a drug.
The part of Grian that was still Grian realised this was like walking into the tiger’s cave, and forced himself to surface, gasping for air. He ordered his brain to use the lungs he had, and he started breathing again.
He clambered up onto the pier, and laid down on the wood, drained. He fumbled around and found the rod. Well, what else was there to do? Cast line, sit down, wait.
After all, the next one could be the one.
He just wanted mending. Then he’d stop. He’d stop.
The ocean wouldn’t let him go.

The reveal of Bucky and Steve’s plans for the day took you by surprise, but you would only let shock and awe hold you for so long in its clutches. A job needed doing, and for damn sure were you going to do it with a flourish.

“You want me to do what?” you asked, blindsided by the request so much so you couldn’t even fully comprehend it. “Sorry—say that again, please?”
Bucky and Steve glanced at one another, then they looked back at you, and you could just see the silent communication between them — the way their eyes lit up, and the way their lips turned upwards into beaming smiles.
They were both wearing tight, long-sleeved V-neck shirts, with the sleeves rolled up to their elbows, to show off the artistry over their forearms and hands – Bucky wore black, Steve wore navy blue.
Steve cleared his throat and quietly offered, “We want you to decorate the shop for Christmas.” Beside him, Bucky spun a set of keys on his index finger. “Do you want to, Petal? We just thought that–”
“I do!” you rushed, holding your hands out to slow Steve’s spiel down. “I just– This is your baby; your shop is your love; all of your hard work has gone into it and you want me to decorate it for Christmas?”
“Yeah, we do,” Bucky said with a shrug of his shoulder. “You’re one of us now, doll. We all love you—no one more than us two—but they already wholeheartedly agreed, and we all want your expert opinion.”
You spluttered and baulked at them, opening and closing your mouth like a fish out of water. Happiness was slowly building in your stomach; elation, similar to the lightness of a helium balloon, and you couldn’t believe your luck.
It would have been a lie if you didn’t admit to daydreaming about decorating their shop. First it was with flowers, but as time wore on and the festive season neared, it was all you could think of — Christmas trees on the smaller scale of size would look beautiful in the corners, and simple but elegant, monochrome decorations would complement it perfectly.
“Are you sure, boys?” you asked for the umpteenth time. “I mean, I won’t be upset if you changed–”
“Yeah, we’re sure,” Steve soothed, chuckling lightly. “In fact, Sam is lending us his truck to go pick out the decorations.”
“His truck,” you repeated, shocked. “I won’t be getting that much!”
“You will when you realise where we’re goin’,” Bucky sang, and he walked to the front door, grabbing his leather jacket off of the coat rack. “So, c’mon, let’s go.”
Steve put his hand on your lower back and encouraged you forward with a light push. “You’ll love it, darlin’.”
You spared one final glance around the shop — the one day you were closed to the public and the one day that both Steve and Bucky had their books closed for appointments, and they had planned an excursion. It sure beat paperwork, you thought, grabbing your coat from behind the counter.
The door swung shut behind you, and you locked it with a loud click before following Bucky to Sam’s parked truck. It was parked by the entrance of Quartet’s Tattoo, right next to Natasha’s blood red Corvette, and you knew the two of them would be watching over Bucky and Steve’s shop.
Steve opened the back door to the cab and you slid into the back seat, not before kissing him on the cheek as thanks. The chassis creaked as both Bucky and James hopped into the front; Steve on the passenger side, and Bucky behind the wheel.
It spluttered to life when Bucky turned the ignition, and the deep rumble of the engine purred when Bucky put it in gear — the further he drove, the more your apprehension mounted. Where were they taking you? What were they planning?
Something must have shown on your face, because you suddenly heard a voice cut through the fog of worry in your mind. “Don’t look so worried, sweetheart,” Steve said quietly, looking at you from over his shoulders. “It’ll be fun—I promise.”
“Yeah,” Bucky agreed, turning the wheel to take a right turn. “Trust us, doll. You are goin’ to flip your shit when we get there.”
“Okay,” you mumbled, placing your hands in your lap.
The drive was only a short one, filled with the radio playing quietly and the occasional snipe from Steve about Bucky’s driving, when you looked up from your hands and out of the windshield. Your mouth opened on a sharp gasp at the sight of one of your favourite garden centres. “You–!”
“Us,” Bucky chuckled, and he turned the truck into a free parking space. “We thought you’d be in heaven here, and ‘tis the season,” he continued, turning off the engine. “Just please don’t pass out on us–”
He was cut off by the sound of your door slamming.
In your excitement, you could not wait to barrel through those doors and look at all of what they had to offer — plants and fir trees to your heart’s content, and not to mention, the beautiful flowers on offer. The snow crunched under your shoes as you darted to wait by the hood of the truck.
Steve walked up to you, shaking his head fondly while you bounced on the balls of your feet. “Sweetheart, don’t pass out on us or you’ll give Buck an aneurysm.”
“I won’t, I won’t,” you chanted, clapping your hands. “I just– How did you think of this?” A surprised squeak escaped your lips as you were embraced and pulled into a warm, strong chest.
Bucky’s laughter rumbled through your body while he held you close. “‘Cause we pay attention, you cutie,” he said into your temple, squeezing you tight. “We’re goin’ to get a couple a’trees, and we learned that this place does sell some decorations.”
“Oh, can we do black, silver, and gold?” you quickly asked, looking at both Steve and Bucky with wide eyes. “It’ll suit your shop and set off the reds and blacks and browns and–”
“Yes, yes,” Steve interrupted, his voice fond. “We can do whatever you want, darlin’. Now, c’mon, we don’t have all day.”
The inside of the garden centre was astoundingly green and festive — lights of all colours shone down on the leaves and branches of ferns and flowers. Above, the overhead bright, white lights marked the way between aisles and tables of potted plants and seeds.
You glanced around, mouth agape and unable to take it all in, when you found to the right of the entry, a sprawling, miniature Christmas tree farm had been set up. Fern branches and differing heights gave the illusion of a forest, and you couldn’t help but smile at the sight. The leaves looked healthy and bright with life — perfect to hang ornaments from.
“How many trees are we getting?”
From the corner of your eyes, you saw Steve look to Bucky, who shrugged. “How about three?” Bucky offered. “That way we can have one behind the desk; one down the hall; then one in the waitin’ area, in that corner where we keep the magazines and shit.”
“Sounds perfect to me,” Steve chimed in with a smile. “Three it is.”
With the game plan in mind of three trees, you took a deep breath, and decided the first step in the game plan was ornaments. You grabbed both Bucky and Steve’s hands to pull them along behind you, straight towards the display of Santa figurines and the like. They followed behind cheerily, taking in all of the greenery with bright, curious eyes.
“Ha! Look,” Bucky exclaimed, pointing towards a Santa figurine on a red Harley Davidson; tattoos covered the arms and hands of the jolly, smiling Santa. A Santa hat was perched atop his head, over the top of a black helmet. “It’s me!”
“We are getting that,” you laughed, grabbing the figurine from the shelf and continuing on.
For hours, you browsed up and down the decoration aisles and stands, filling up the cart that Bucky had run to grab when he saw the sheer volume of your choices. Still, it was not enough to contain all of what you had picked.
After a declaration that, “This is more than enough, sweetheart,” you pushed the cart towards the till counters with Bucky and Steve trailing behind, their arms full to bursting with ornaments, figurines, and lights.
“And you said you wouldn’t get this damned much,” Bucky huffed, carefully placing down his burden.
Steve grunted with faux effort as he lugged his own curations onto the counter. “I agree. Damn, Petal—remind me to never let you loose in here again.”
You pouted. “This was your fault, you decided it was a good idea.”
After paying for all of the decorations and all three trees, and at their insistence, you waited patiently in the middle of the backseat of the truck while they lifted and hauled the trees onto the back tray. The back gate slammed shut, and then you had the numerous bags from your haul shoved on either side of you.
The truck’s suspension groaned from the added weight of the two of them when they jumped into the front seats, and you sat happily between the mountains of Christmas prizes, unable to wipe the smile from your face.
“Well, that was an adventure,” Steve said, and then he and Bucky turned around in their seats to look at you.
They both burst into laughter at the smile on your face.
“You look so fuckin’ adorable, baby,” Bucky cooed, and Steve winked. The truck roared to life and Bucky grabbed the wheel. “Let’s get you back, so you can get started.”

Injured Trilogy- part one | part two | part three
pairing: Joel Miller x fem!reader
summary: you save Ellie, but not yourself.
tags/warnings: hurt/comfort, this one is angsty, blood and descriptions of injury, I'm not a doctor, also don't know a thing about nature apparently, established relationship, happy family, drowning, fear of water, way more spice than intended it just happened- though nowhere near explicit.
word count: 10k | ao3
a/n: had to edit this twice and tbh I just need it finished, so please forgive the mistakes. part three might take a little longer...I’m having quite the anxious episode but enough of that, hope you enjoy!
masterlist
It took a while for you to recover, but you had. Well for the most part. Your hand was the only lingering problem.
The doctor had done what she could for it but without the proper technology and equipment–even after the mostly successful surgery, it would never be the same again.
You had diligently followed the physical therapy exercises she gave you and weeks later, you could now make a fist and your grip strength was improving. The process was long and if you were being honest you were getting impatient. You were just thankful that it was your non-dominant hand because it was still frustratingly weak and uncoordinated in comparison. The doctor had confirmed that it would probably always feel that way. You'd be lying if you said that that didn't upset you, not that you weren't grateful to be alive–it just really sucked.
Joel was different though. While you were a little depressed and frustrated, Joel seemed to be almost obsessing over it. He would inspect it every morning, seeing how the two deep scars from the surgery were healing. Then he would ask a couple times a day if you had completed your exercises. And he was also overly protective of it. He'd fuss anytime you picked up anything or when you'd tell him that you were ready to go back to work. The two of you argued over it quite heatedly more than once.
One day, a couple weeks ago now, after he finished his patrol he returned his gun and gear, and checked in with Tommy for the next day's schedule.
Tommy and Maria were in a deep discussion and when they saw Joel, Tommy bowed his head and Maria straightened, both looking extremely suspicious.
“What happened?” Joel asked concerned. He somehow knew it was about you.
Maria admitted that due to your tenacity, she had put you on light cleaning duties. That you had begged to have something to do, and that after a couple of hours you had grown frustrated from the weakness in your hand, which had cramped causing you to drop a plate. It shattered all over the ground and when you could only use your good hand to pick up the small pieces, it had sent you over the edge.
You didn't listen to anyone and you'd picked up the sharp pieces using only one hand and it had cut you up. You did so with tears in your eyes and then you left without saying a word, hand covered in blood.
He quickly left, hurrying to you as fast as his feet would carry him.
When he came home he found you in your shared bathroom. You didn't hear him enter and were focused trying to pick out the small ceramic pieces that were lodged beneath your fingertips.
You had been attempting to fish out the pieces for just under an hour now and your hands were shaking. You could barely work the tweezers due to the slick blood and your hand was cramping. Speaking of, it was properly hurting now–which it hadn't been for weeks now.
“Baby?”
You jumped, dropping the tweezers and cursing. You grabbed the hand towel and tried to cover your hand but he was quicker. His body came up behind yours and he placed both arms on the sink, trapping you in place, eyes making contact in the mirror.
“Let me see,” he said, leaning down, breath hitting your neck.
“It’s nothing, just cut myself cleaning.”
“Let–me see.”
You almost gave in but just as you about relented, you thought of a different distraction and leaned back and pressed your backside into him, moving your hips gently from side to side.
His nostrils flared, eyes narrowed as he hissed at the contact. It took him a second to come to his senses because his body would alway betray him when it came to you, but then quickly snapped out of it and scooted back and put his hands on your hips preventing you from following.
“Jesus–just let me see your damn hand.”
You turned around abruptly, he was still very much in your personal space.
“I just nicked it. I don't know why you're acting like this over this,” you suddenly felt small like a helpless child. Despite your confident voice, you could no longer look at him as tears welled in your eyes. You hated feeling helpless but you also hated needing help. And what didn't even make sense was all he wanted to do was to help you. Why you rejected it you weren't entirely sure. Maybe you were just tired of seeing the worried look on his face–the one that you continued to put there.
Though, as much as you loved him, you hated the way you always just gave into him. You blamed his eyes, his voice, his… you know what, it was just him–he was your kryptonite.
“It was just a little cleaning,” you said, unwrapping your hand and held it up to him so that he could see. “I- I uh–broke a glass and tried to…”
“Maria told me.”
“Damn.”
He chuckled softly at your frustration and then frowned suddenly, “You're still lying to me. I thought we went over this.”
“This doesn't count though. It's not life or death. It's just a few stupid cuts.”
He reached out and took your lightly bleeding hand. “I’m not too worried about this,” he said after inspecting it thoroughly, noting that you still had some small pieces still stuck. “But this…” he gently let go of your hand and picked up the other. It was still locked in a cramp, “This is what I worry about.”
He carefully pressed into the tight muscle and you gasped in discomfort, which was quickly replaced with relief as he kneaded the overused muscle until he successfully worked the cramp out.
“Thank you,” you said, looking up at him almost ashamed
“You're doin’ too much.”
You yanked your hand from his like he had just burned you. He didn't react, just continued to stare at you. He wasn't going to take that back, you were doing too much too soon.
“I literally just swept and washed a few dishes. If–if I can't even do that then…”
“You were hurt,” the frown returned to his face.
“Yeah I was. Past tense Joel.”
“It takes time to heal. You almost…you almost died baby,” he put his hands in his pockets as he blinked a few times trying to rid the images of you doubled over coughing up blood.
He wanted to reach out to you so damn bad, but knew that you needed space right now.
“I know that. But I feel so helpless, all the time. I- I can't do anything. I can't even turn the pages in a book…I can't even sit and fucking read. And you leave and do your shifts–shifts that we are supposed to do together. What if you got hurt because I wasn't there to watch your back?” He looked like he wanted to interrupt you but refrained. “And then Ellie has to come home from school and before she does her homework or hangs out with her friends she helps me cook and clean. I just—I’m just so sick of feeling useless. I’m so sick of feeling like a burden.”
There it was.
He thought of a million things to say. He wanted to berate you for even thinking such a thing, but that never seemed to work on you, so he decided to go a different route.
“I understand.”
“Do you?” You said with more venom than you intended.
“Yeah, yeah I do,” he cleared his throat, “When I was stabbed and you and Ellie had to do everything.”
“You were unconscious Joel. You were dying from infection.”
“That doesn't matter. I–I couldn't protect you two. I could barely understand what you said to me but I could make out enough.” He took his hands out of his pockets and rubbed his face, “I knew that you were going to leave and try to find me medicine. I tried to call out…I tried to stop you, but I couldn't. And then when the men–when the men came looking for you I–damn near lost my mind. But I couldn't move. I, I tried so hard to,” he felt the familiar pressure in his chest, “I…I watched you leave–and I couldn't even beg you to stay.”
You stood still as a statue as a tear rolled down your cheek, all you could do was stare.
“So yeah, I do understand. Feeling helpless is the worst, but you got me and Ellie, and you are getting better everyday. But pushing yourself isn’t gonna help you. So please do me–do us a favor and just let us help you. You’d do the same thing for us in a heartbeat and you are never a burden. Do you hear me?”
Your eyes were wide and mouth was slightly opened, “I’m sorry, I had no idea.”
“It’s ok. Everything turned out fine. We are both here.”
You launched at him, hugging him tightly. You kissed his neck and said, “I wish you would have told me. I know you dream about it…”
“I don't want to talk about that right now, ok? I just want to get that junk out of your hand and take a shower. Does that sound good?”
You agreed.
He took his time and worked efficiently, and in no time he had all of the debris removed and had cleaned your fingertips. Then he helped you undress and led you to the shower, where he worshiped you with as much attention as he gave you wounds, and then finished by cleaning your body as well–something that he's come to enjoy doing. When you got out of the shower he gently bandaged both hands, one for the cuts and the other to relieve the pressure on the healing muscle.
He dried you off and helped you dress into your most comfortable clothes, which were ironically his clothes. Then you sat at the kitchen table and listened while he told you about his day. He heated you a can of your preferred soup and toasted you both some bread to go along with it.
After your shared meal, you moved to the bedroom where he read a couple chapters of your favorite book to you. You fell asleep with your head on his shoulder. And when you woke you were in his arms snuggled closely, your bad hand in his as he lightly massaged it.
You've been back on light duties for a month now–also known as cleaning and restocking the armory. It definitely feels boring and mundane after the action you were used to, but it was much better than doing nothing. Your hand still has the occasional cramp but it's much stronger. You’ve practiced on the shooting range a few times now and you weren't as hindered as you thought you'd be. Slower yes, but still able, with an aim as deadly as it's ever been.
It was the middle of a Wyoming winter and it was cold. Snow fell for four days straight covering the ground in a thick solid layer that probably wouldn't melt until the beginning of spring. Which made today's appearance of the sun that much better. Everyone in Jackson acted like it was a holiday. Two families were actually having parties and had invited you over.
People liked you for a reason you didn't even know. You were nice and you worked hard but you weren't overly friendly, maybe you just appeared that way because you were around Joel and Ellie. Or maybe it was because you were close to Maria and Tommy. Regardless, there would be no partying for you.
A few months ago you had talked Ellie out of going on runs until she was older. She hated it and took quite some convincing but you managed to make a deal with her. She focuses on school and her friends, and honestly just being a semi carefree teenager for once in her life, and a couple times a year the three of you would take vacations.
By vacations, you'd basically just camp and be away from everyone a bit. None of you would admit it but each of you missed the seclusion. Just the three of you, no obligations, nobody telling you what to do. You were grateful for Jackson, you all were and it was much better than being alone but that's how you lived for months together. That's where your strong bonds were made, and sometimes the sleeping bag under the stars felt more like home than your house.
Another part of the agreement was that Ellie got to choose where you'd go. It couldn't be too far, at least not during the winter, and the trip couldn't last more than a week–not until she was finished with school.
On this inaugural trip she wanted to see the rapids. Some friends had talked about how they canoed down them and she hadn't stopped talking about it since. You doubted that that was true, in a canoe? But it didn't matter it was a part of your deal and since the rapids weren't too far away the request seemed reasonable.
And really it was a big deal for Ellie to want to go anywhere near water, let alone potentially dangerous water. She had let it slip once that she couldn't swim and the fact that she hasn't asked to learn yet tells you that she's afraid.
It was early morning, the sun had just begun to light up the sky. It was cold but no snow clouds were on the horizon. You were all packed with more things than you’d need in a week, and the trip probably wouldn’t even last three days. This was your first time leaving since your injury and it was Ellie's first since the agreement, which meant Joel was kind of a nervous wreck. He packed excessive amounts of everything–ammo, food, first aid. His pack weighed double the usual weight, and this time he saddled up his horse.
You found him in the stables. He was loading up the horse slowly and precisely, trying to slow down the inevitable–his family was leaving safety.
“Are you ready?”
He jumped slightly and laughed almost nervously. “You scared me sweetheart.” He sighed and fastened the last strap on the saddle, “Bout there, I wanna double check the…”
“Joel,” you crossed your arms and looked at him sweetly. “Everything is going to be ok. We are going to have a fun quick little trip. Nothing that we aren't used to right?”
He still had his back to you but you could hear him gulp and you could see him trying to shake his head in some sort of agreement.
“Hey.” You walked up to him and held the side of his arms. “Do not put all of this on yourself. The three of us can defend ourselves, in fact I'd say that we are a pretty badass trio.”
You smiled and he couldn't help but smile back. It didn't reach his eyes but he smiled nonetheless.
“I’m afraid.” His voice was low where only you could hear him. He turned from you and focused on the horse. A little shocked that the confession slid out of him so easily. Completely unintentional.
His admission made you break a little. You didn't want this to stress him out like it was. This was supposed to be fun. “If you don't want to go me and Ellie–”
“No,” his voice was firm and commanding. “God- just no. I um–I just…it's safe here.” He was suddenly fixated on petting the horse, unable to look at your eyes that seemed to make him confess things without his permission. “And to leave it, if we don't have to seems…foolish to me.”
You tensed at his words. And boy did they make you angry. You and Ellie have been planning this and looking forward to it for weeks now. And he just waited until the last minute to express his concern? To call something you’d been dreaming about foolish?!
“We can't just stay here. We can't just be yours to play house with.” You paced a little and then continued almost grumbling to yourself, “Be your little housewife and we aren’t even married—go to school–be your picture perfect family. We can't do that. I can’t. I- I won't.”
He turned to face you quickly. He hadn’t meant to upset you, really he hadn't but it did seemed foolish to him, dangerous for no reason. He didn’t like the way you were talking, it made him uncomfortable. Yes he loved coming home to you but it was just because he knew that you were safe. It had nothing to do with you being a ‘housewife’ to him. And he also didn’t like what sounded like an ultimatum, he would never keep you from leaving but it still frightened him.
“I just meant–”
“Oh I know what you meant.” You felt your face getting hot. You didn't know where all of this was coming from and chalked it up to being frustrated at his last minute indecisiveness and your slightly stir-crazed mental state. “And it's such an easy thing for you to think about- building a wall around us caginging us up like animals in a zoo.”
“That's not–”
“Come home to a cooked meal.” You were pacing faster now, needing some kind of physical release. Your body was practically humming with pent up energy from being cooped up for months.
“Baby it’s not–”
“All your laundry folded nice and neat.” You dug your boots into the stable floor with such force that dirt was actually starting to kick up. You could feel your blood pressure rise with each step.
“To be propped up and ready to fuck when you come home–”
That made him snap. “Stop it!” He tightly held your shoulders and jerked you around hard. “I’d think very carefully about what you say next.”
You were still, all except for a wicked gleam of rebellion that flashed in your eyes. “Is that what you want?” You were breathing embarrassingly heavy.
He hated his reaction to all of this but regardless he still felt blood quickly rushing south and his pants tightened rapidly. You are just so damn hot and the image you were painting, well he hated to admit that the last part sounded appealing. Also he not so secretly liked it when you talked dirty.
“For me to be spread out on the bed for you, nothing to do but wait for you to get home. Be nice and ready for your—”
With absolutely no warning he spun you around and pulled you roughly to him. You arched into him instinctively and he placed one hand on your inner thigh and the other over your dirty mouth.
“I know it’s been awhile so I won’t get mad at you. But if you don't shut that pretty mouth of yours right now, we aren't goin’ anywhere.”
You ground your backside into him just as rough,  and bit at his hand, in a futile attempt of retaliation.
“Fuck…” He pressed himself harder into you. A sinful moan escaped you that was barely muffled by his large hand. He was certain that his strain was going to break his zipper. “If you needed this from me baby, all you have to do is ask.” He cooed into your ear making chills shoot down your spine and pressure pool into your belly.
He moved his hand that was resting on your thigh and started to unclip your belt buckle.
The metallic clank broke you from your lust filled trance, and you shot out from his embrace. Your pupils were blown wide and you were almost gasping for air. “You aren't gonna- damnit, you aren’t going to distract me over this. We- we are leaving, with or without you.”
You stormed out quickly. Not even bothering to buckle back up.
If he were in the position he would have chased after you. But he couldn’t go running through town in his current state. So instead, to calm himself down, he thought about anything at all other than you.
A couple of minutes later, he led his overly packed horse over to where the two of you were waiting. Ellie was beaming at him and bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement. He smiled at her but it made him feel like a piece of shit. This meant so much to the two of you. And he might have just ruined your whole trip. He hated when he made you angry but he still believed he had a point.
He looked over at you and you quickly turned your head away to avoid him. He didn’t know how to apologize to you. Or rather he knew how but he couldn’t do that in front of Ellie. So he’d have to find the right time when you were alone. He wasn’t the best with words, in fact most of the time his words only made things worse. So he’d have to be patient and hope you’d be willing to forgive.
He was mid thought when you just started walking. Ellie cut her eyes back at him and raised her eyebrow in question.
He just shrugged but he knew she was clever, sometimes too clever, and he knew that she knew he had done something stupid.
“Come on.” He sighed, urging her to drop it and follow.
Luckily for him, she was more excited for the trip than curious about what had happened. But he still feared that it was only a matter of time before she questioned him to death.
It took about five hours to make it to the river. It was a slow peaceful walk. There was no hurry—the journey and being at peace was the reason for the trip–it was mostly made in silence, the three of you weren’t big on small talk so it wasn’t at all uncomfortable, though he knew that you were only quiet because you were still stewing from earlier.
Ellie grew more talkative towards the end and you tried your best to carry on with her, but you were still infuriated with Joel. It was a buildup of things you supposed. But sometimes he really gets under your skin. The overprotective thing really works for you until it doesn't. And that’s not really fair to him because that’s who he is, and you knew that he hadn’t caged you in, you just felt trapped by your own injury.
It didn’t help that it was after months of being cooped up and babied. Two things you disliked. If he was going to be like this every time you wanted to go for a walk- then flat out, the relationship wouldn’t work. You needed some semblance of freedom or you’d go insane. That scared you because you also needed him. And maybe you were being a little dramatic. He was currently beside you and you were outside of the gates. So maybe you were being a little hasty. Hopefully this outing will give you the reboot your mind needed.
Joel picked a place to set up camp while you and Ellie walked over to the edge of the cliff to see the now infamous rapids. They were more intense than you imagined, no way could a canoe make it down them.
Ellie was being uncharacteristically timid. You looked back at her and decided to give her some alone time. “I’m going to help him, don't get too close to the edge, it's slick.”
She playfully rolled her eyes at you.
When you made it back to Joel he already had half of the stuff thrown on the ground, but when he looked at you he gave a look.
“What?” You placed your hands on your hips defensively.
“Nothin’...” he exhaled deeply, “Look- I’m sorry about earlier. I don’t wanna ruin your trip.”
“Our trip, it's our trip Joel. Look at where we are. Look how beautiful it is.” you gestured around you at the beautiful mountains, “Don’t you just feel…free?”
He looked at you with a sudden understanding, it was freedom that you needed. You’d told him as much, but seeing the stress visibly leave your face is what finally got it through his thick skull, “Yeah, I guess I do.”
You beamed at him, “See!”
“You look awfully beautiful out here like this,” his eyes sparkled at you. There was no other way to describe it.
“So do you.”
“Yeah?”
“Big time.”
He laughed, “See that big tree?”
It was the biggest tree in the area, impossible to miss, “Yeah?”
“If we were alone I’d apologize like you like me to, right up against–”
“Stop…that's–that’s cruel,” you blushed.
He laughed almost wickedly.
“Let's unpack before you find a way to get yourself back into trouble.”
Ellie was looking out, biting her lip apprehensively. Now that she was here she was fucking scared. Why did she even pick this stupid place, she couldn't swim, it was cold, and it was fucking stupid.
She walked closer to the edge and tried to peek over but she was too far away. She got frustrated with herself. Come on, don't be a pussy. She moved closer and closer still. Her chest felt tight and her legs were beginning to quake. She fought the urge to lay down and crawl to the edge, she didn't think that that would be a good look for her. So she continued to move forward very slowly, inch by inch, silently disregarding all sounds of internal alarms until finally, she could see all the way down into the raging water.
Her toes kissed the edge and as she leaned forward, just as she felt that she had confidently conquered a fear, her boot slipped. “FU–” she was cut short as she twisted and tried to grab onto the edge, but in doing so she landed on her chest which then sent her flying backwards towards the water. Thankfully she landed on a ledge less than halfway down the steep drop.
The ledge was small and narrow, she was very lucky to land on it at all. If she wouldn't have tried to hug the side of the cliff she would have fallen straight into the water. What she didn’t notice though was as she landed, the ledge moved slightly- small rocks broke off and fell into the freezing water below.
Ellie laid there for a few seconds and stared up at the blue sky. She took deep breaths trying to get it through her head that she was in fact alive–she wasn't entirely convinced. Until she heard you calling out her name.
You were fortunate enough to look over just as she fell. You ran to her as fast as you could desperately calling out her name.
Joel was left alone and confused for merely a second before he noticed Ellie's missing form. His heart dropped as he sprinted past you and looked over where she used to be standing.
“Ellie?” you caught up and stood beside him.
You looked over the ledge as she carefully stood and brushed off some snow and dirt.
“Holy shit.” she said looking up at the two of you.
She didn't speak loud enough to hear because of the thunderous sound of the rapids, but you could read her lips. You exhaled in relief.
Joel was also very relieved. If she had fallen she would have hit the rocks, and if by some miracle she missed the rocks the currents were strong. Even an amazing swimmer wouldn’t be able to stay above the water, he didn't care to think about what would happen to someone who couldn't swim.
“Ellie,” he yelled down to her.
She looked up, and moved to hug the side of the cliff, “Yea?”
He laid on his stomach and reached down his arm as far as he could stretch, “Can you climb to reach my hand?”
She stretched her body as tall as she could, standing on her toes, her feet almost completely parallel to the cliff. She was still short, not by much, so she jumped as high as she could, still missing his hand. When she landed, the shifting of the ledge was still unnoticed. There was nothing to grab onto, there was nothing to grip to climb.
She jumped again but this time landing with more force. The ledge visibly shifted and larger rocks plunked into the water.
“Stop!” you screamed out. “Ellie, stay still!”
She gave a thumbs up, “No problem.”
You laid down next to Joel, “I’m going down there.”
“Like hell–”
“Hey, listen to me. I’m taller than her. I could probably jump and reach your hand, she just needs a boost. She could probably stand on my back and reach you.”
“Let me, I’ll…”
“You’ll what?” you sighed and did your best to calm down. “I don't think the ledge is strong enough to hold you both.”
He opened his mouth but you continued, “And you know I couldn't pull your ass up.” you grinned, but he wasn't having it.
“Just wait a second. Let me figure something out.” He looked back towards camp, “We could tie some–”
“You saw the way those rocks fell. We might not have the time for that Joel.” You grabbed his forearm and looked deeply into his eyes, you weren't playing around, you were going to do this, “Please, let me save her.”
His brows furrowed and he looked at you with as much seriousness as you've ever seen from him, and that was saying something. He brought his forehead to yours, “Be careful,” he whispered onto your skin.
You nodded, noses bumbing against each other and then reluctantly moved from him and looked down, “Ellie? I’m going to come down there and help you, ok?”
She looked up at you in pure panic, “No don't! This fucking piece of shit rock is barely holding me up.”
“It’ll be fine.”
She practically cried out your name, “Please don't,” her voice cracked in her loud plea.
You looked at Joel and he was looking at you in premature anguish, “It’s going to be alright,” you said to who, you weren’t sure–probably everyone, including yourself.
You removed your gloves in case you needed a better grip and slowly climbed over the edge, Joel held on tightly, and when he looked at the two deep scars on your hand he froze, “God damnit!”
“What?” you looked up worried that something had happened, and saw him focused on your hand.
“Crazy woman, what are you fuckin’ insane?”
Your hand had crossed your mind, but getting Ellie to safety was the only thing that mattered. You smiled sadly- knowingly at him, and he all of the sudden realized what he was doing–he was slowly dropping you to your death. This wasn’t just a rescue mission, this was a suicide mission. The anger from his eyes was replaced with bone chilling fear. He desperately yanked you back up a little, pulling your arm too tight and causing your bicep to strain.
“Wha–?” you saw the raw panic in his eyes as he tried to haul you back up, “Stop, Joel Stop!” you looked down at Ellie and then back up to him with tears in your eyes, “I’ll break my arm off if I have to.”
He knew you would. Selfless woman.
He looked back at you holding on to his hand, gripping the side of the rock face, eyes full of tears and determination–he loved you so. “You better come back to me.”
“I always will.”
His grip tightened and he lowered you as far as he could, “Land softly.”
No shit you thought as you landed on the ledge. It dropped even further this time making a horrible crumbling noise.
You grabbed Ellie and hugged her tightly afraid that this was it. When nothing else happened you sighed in relief and quickly backed up. She looked scared, like she wanted to stay in your arms and hide.
“Come on, we have to hurry.”
You quickly got on your hands and knees and she stood on top of you. She reached tall but was scared to dig her toes into you–she didn't want to hurt you, and she thought of how long it took for your ribs to heal, how much pain you were in.
“Use your toes Ellie!” you demanded.
“I don't want to hurt you,” she practically sobbed out.
“You won’t, I can hardly feel you.”
She knew you were lying but she complied and stood on the tips of her toes. She brushed his fingertips and tried to reach further.
“Are you close?” you asked, feeling the ground beneath you sway knowing time wasn't on your side.
“I can touch him but I can’t–”
“Jump,” you interrupted her.
“Wha….NO I won't do that.”
“Ellie, baby- you have to.”
“I don't want to.”
“I love you very much…everything is going to be ok.”
More rocks crumbled and Joel called out your name in warning.
“Jump Ellie!”
Without a moment's more hesitation she did and Joel gripped her wrist tightly. They worked together and quickly got her to safety.
The pathetic excuse for a ledge was giving out. Your world was rocking back and forth like a buoy on the ocean. You stood slowly, doing your best to not make any sudden movements. You could hear both of them desperately calling out to you but you were focused. They didn’t know how precarious your situation had become.
You stood slowly and reached for Joel’s hand. You had known going into this that it was going to be much harder for you to get up. Sure you were taller than Ellie but not by much. You were going to have to jump or climb. To jump meant if you missed- you had to land, and you weren’t sure it could take that force.
You dug your fingers into any crack you could find, there weren’t many but you made your way maybe a foot off of the ledge when two things happened—first your hand locked up in a cramp that rendered it useless. You dropped it to your side, trying your best to hide it from those above. And second, the ledge broke away and fell into the water.
They cried out to you but you didn’t know what to do. You truly couldn’t do a thing with your hand, you couldn’t even use it as a stabilizer. You found a perch for one toe of your boot, but it wasn’t going to hold long.
It was like the universe knew that this was how you’d die. It was shitty, but it was giving you a chance to say goodbye to the two people you loved most in the world, and that’s more than a lot of people got.
You looked up. Joel’s face was red from straining to make himself longer. Spit was flying from his mouth with every pleading yell. Ellie was screaming for you to hurry. Time seemed to slow down as you watched them. They were going to be ok, they had each other, and despite what Joel would argue that would be enough.
So you had one attempt. It was all or nothing. One small lurch forward and you’d either make it to Joel’s hand or you wouldn’t. The chances were very slim.
“I have one shot,” you called up.
“Just keep climbing baby, you’re doing so good!” he encouraged loudly.
“I- I can’t. My hand is locked up.”
He cussed and behind him his feet angrily kicked holes in the snow. Tears started falling from his face and passed by you like drops of rain, “I told you to let me! I could have—“
“I love you. I love you both,” you sniffled but felt at peace, you had saved your girl, “I’m going to try my best but I really don’t have much to propel myself from.”
Your hand slipped a little and you could hear Joel’s gasp and Ellie’s cry.
“Ok I’m ready,” your muscles tightened in preparation and you tested the movement. Once you were satisfied that you’ve done all you could you started your countdown, “On, three-two—one.”
To give yourself some credit, you did make it farther than you thought. Probably a hands length away from Joel’s, but you knew from takeoff that it wasn’t enough.
You briefly saw the look of absolute horror on their faces as you took in as much air as you could, and shielded your head with your arms as you plunged into the freezing water.
You of course knew that water was powerful. It helped shape the earth with its constant rising and falling. Given time its pressure could smooth a stone, could forge new paths and create new bodies of water. It grew vegetation as easily as it could flood and drown. Any living thing needs it or would die. Water was both life and death, it was a powerful, powerful thing.
But you didn’t truly respect it until now. It tugged you under and slung your body around like a ragdoll filled with nothing but cotton. You had never felt so weighed down and yet somehow so weightless. You were so distracted by the sheer force of it that the sharp burning from the cold came later. Then oddly enough the need to breathe came even later than that.
After a few seconds of pathetically trying to fight it, you quickly realized you could do nothing but patiently wait for a current to bring you to the surface for a chance to get air.
It happened faster than you had anticipated. Before you knew it your head was above the water and you were gasping for oxygen. Some water got in but that didn’t matter to you in the slightest.
You glanced to the side at the riverbank and for the first time you noticed how fast you were moving. You were absolutely flying down the river.
You went under a couple more times, and were banged around—hitting some rocks here and there, which would bruise but nothing serious.
There wasn’t much farther to go as far as the rapids were concerned. The river was long but if you could make it another one- two minutes tops before it slowed and calmed.
What a jinx you are.
Your ankle was suddenly caught between two rocks. You were stuck and the angry currents were pushing at the side of your face, trying their best to force you back under. You took a deep breath, and went under to try and wiggle your boot free. It was of no use so you untied the shoe and were launched free immediately. It took you by surprise and rolled you a few times—disorienting you, and then your luck ran out. You hit your head, everything went black.
When you fell he almost jumped right in after you. As matter of fact, if Ellie wasn't with him he would have. His whole body shifted forward begging him to leap, but Ellie’s hand quickly grabbed his shoulder tugging him back up, as she yelled out after you. She anchored him to the spot and kept him from acting irrationally.
He sprang to his feet, “Look for her I’m gettin’ the horse.”
She quickly got up and ran along the edge. It's funny that moments ago she was so scared to even go near it- now she was sprinting alongside it, the only fear she felt was for you. Her eyes combed the water trying to get a glimpse of your now flailing form, they were stinging from the cold but she refused to so much as blink.
She looked farther down and saw you, just as you were thrusted up for air.
Joel passed her on the horse and she pointed ahead. She tried to keep up but you were both moving too quickly. She kept running even as she lost sight of you both.
Joel was riding alongside you. It was a difficult task to both keep his eyes on you, and keep his horse from running off the side but he quickly adjusted. You were doing a good job of keeping your head above the water, and he was starting to feel slightly optimistic.
The water was already calming down.
He looked back to you all of that previous optimism died along with any hope he had left in him. This time he screamed your name, it was way too raw to be called a yell.
He moved his horse back and forth searching. The horse was as anxious as Joel, it wanted to continue running. His heart was beating out of his chest as he continued crying out for you.
Then he saw you.
You were face down and floating downstream.
He charged the horse and went ahead of you to where the rocks stopped and the shore began. He dismounted, took off all of his clothes except his boxers, and ran into the water.
Even though it was calmer, he still had to curl his toes–gripping at the dirt in an attempt to brace himself with each step. When you floated near he swam out to you. It was rougher out where you were.
When he reached you he quickly turned you over.
You were so blue and he couldn’t tell if you were breathing.
Fortunately for the both of you, he was a swim champion in his teenage years and a pool lifeguard was his first job. He swam fast and strong and there was no way you’d release from his grip.
When his feet touched the bottom he cradled you, and trudged through the water as quickly as he could–water splashing all around as his strong legs ran you to shore.
Ellie was waiting, bent over trying to catch her breath.
He got you out of the water and laid you down in the snow.
“Is she breathing?” Ellie gasped as she looked down at your blue face.
“I don’t know yet.” He felt for a pulse but didn’t find one. Then he put finger under your nose to feel the air. Nothing.
“Damnit,” he immediately started chest compressions.
Ellie’s legs gave out and she sat in shock. She had lost a lot but losing you felt like too much. You were the closest thing she’d ever had to a mom. You were her best friend. What the fuck was she supposed to do without you?
“...gotta be the hero—”
Joel was angrily muttering to you. Ellie could only make out occasional fragments, she wasn’t even sure he knew what he was saying.
“—let anyone else get hurt.”
His voice trembled with emotion.
“Couldn’t just let me…hard headed…”
He was openly crying now and getting slightly winded from the exertion. His body pink from the cold with steam rising off of him.
“—drive me damn insane,”
Ellie was now sobbing with him- broken gasps and labored breaths. She hugged her knees to herself and began rocking.
“…better start breathing I swear to god.”
The horse moved, catching her eye.
“Please- don’t leave me…”
She turned back and watched him desperately pound on your chest.
“—I fucking need you…you hear me?”
That was as close to a sleeping beauty moment that you’d ever get. You started violently coughing up water- expelling it from your lungs. He rolled you on your side so it was easier on you for you to spit up the liquid.
A rush of pure joy overcame him, “That’s it baby get it all out.”
Ellie crawled closer to you like she couldn’t believe that you were alive. Something red caught her eye. “Uh, Joel?” she pointed behind your head, her voice sounding so small.
He was so fixated on watching your face that he hadn’t seen the blood staining the white snow behind your head, “Fuck.”
As you continued to cough he felt around the back of your head. There was a small swollen knot that was split by a not so deep cut. There was no indentation which was his main concern. And head injuries bled a lot, he reminded himself as he looked at his now crimson coated hand.
The coughs slowed down but he started worrying why you weren’t shivering. He was shaking uncontrollably. You were still.
“Here’s what I need you to do- take the horse and bring all our stuff down here. We have to get her warm.”
Ellie was silent. Frozen in fear staring at the blood.
“Ellie…Ellie?!” He said loudly, snapping her out of it, “You hear me?”
“I- I’m on it.” She jumped on the horse and galloped away.
He pulled you so that you were propped up against a tree–he didn't want you to drown in the water you were clearing from your body. He brushed some hair out of your face with his numb fingers–he couldn't even feel the soft strands. Then he started to gather sticks for a fire.
You were in and out of consciousness. You mumbled a few times but never made much sense.
Ellie returned and helped Joel finish building the fire, it needed to be big. He kept repeating that to her.
They set up the tent. Facing it towards the fire so that the heat wafted and was captured underneath. Then he put all the sleeping bags and any fabric they packed inside. By this time Joel was shaking so bad he could barely pick up anything- now all of his appendages were numb. His tremors were now so severe that his speech was broken.
“I’m gonna ge-get all of these wet clothes–off of her, and get her in-inside.”
She nodded, liking the plan so far.
“Listen- I don’t know how to say this a-any other way, but we are going t-to be naked.”
She looked a little put off and confused.
“It’s just for bo-body heat, nothin’ weird.”
“Nothing, weird?”
“You-you know what, I- I mean,” he clenched his fists trying to demand that his body stop shaking.
“Ok so what do you want me to do?”
“I want you…to ta-take the rifle, and be on lo-look out…she has to ge-get warm–”
“Joel…I’ve got this. Just…take care of her..please.”
He nodded in an understanding agreement, if he takes care of you then everything else will be ok.
She picked up the gun and mentally started outlining a perimeter to pace.
He pulled you over to the fire and began to undress you. His hands fumbled with the buttons and he winced when he finally noticed that you were missing a boot. He removed your shirt and jacket, leaving your top half bare. His eyes traced the many forming bruises–nothing near as bad as the last time. Then his hands touched your belt buckle. Visions from mere hours ago when he was unfastening it for a completely different reason flashed before him.
Tears returned and he started sniffing loudly, ‘gah’ he helplessly croaked out as he removed the remaining clothing. Nothing more to note, just more of the same–discolored bruising and small scrapes.
The bleeding on the back of your head was slowing down, though he still wrapped the injury with gauze. The bandage wrapped around and covered the top of your forehead.
He laid you gently on top of a sleeping bag–the tent had a floor but he was trying his best to keep you from the cold ground. Then he put all the other sleeping bags, blankets, and even clothes on top of you. He took off his wet boxers and threw them out of the tent and snuggled as close to you as he could possibly get.
Your skin felt like ice. He hissed at the first contact but without hesitation pulled you to him even tighter. He was truly enveloping your form- legs were entangled, his broad chest and strong arms cocooned around you securely, even his neck and head curled into you. His hands rubbed up and down your back trying to create a warming friction–but you still weren't shivering…you should be shivering.
He didn't know what else to do, and maybe he'd done all that he could do, but that was hard for a man like Joel to accept.
He was warming up quickly, and as he regained some sense of touch, he started to feel your skin beneath his fingertips. You were so very soft, much too soft for hands like these he thought to himself.
Out of nowhere he started talking. He didn't know where it came from, he just opened his mouth and words began pouring out. He wasn't even aware of what he was saying until he heard Sarah's name.
He was telling you about his daughter he then realized.
You had only asked about her twice. Once at the beginning of your relationship when you found out about her for the first time–which led to him wrongly ignoring you for a whole week. And the second was when he screamed her name in a nightmare–he told you to never mention her again, and went for a walk that lasted a whole day. He didn't know why you put up with him.
Last time you were hurt, when he was so scared he was gonna lose you, he told you how she died. And even then, even after he had opened up and said her name for the first time in years, even knowing that he could trust you- that he loved you, he couldn't bring himself to talk about her…that was for some reason until this moment.
He told you about how smart she was, about how kind and funny, and caring. How she loved to make a big deal on his birthday and always found a way to surprise him with incredibly thoughtful gifts. That she loved to cook and take care of him, because she said he deserved to be taken care of.
And as he was telling you all of the wonderful things about his daughter it made him realize that she would have absolutely loved you. The two of you had a lot in common and would have probably harassed him into taking care of himself. His chest felt unbearably tight, he had hurt the both of you by not talking about her–by not talking about her he hadn’t let her memory live on, and by not telling you he had unintentionally kept a huge part of his heart hidden.
Suddenly he felt you. If he weren’t melded to you so tightly he probably wouldn’t have, but he did. You were starting to tremble.
“That's it baby. Warm up for me.”
He kept rubbing your back. He could feel a thin layer of sweat collect between you, it was from him he was certain. He'd gone from cold to warm to quite hot. The fire had heated up the small space in no time at all.
Before long chills started to shake your body and he could hear your teeth chattering. He felt you nuzzle closer to his chest.
“Sweetheart?”
“S’ cold.”
“You'll be warm in a minute.”
“Wha time is…?” your words were slurred.
“Late. We should probably wake up.” he really hoped that you would wake up, or at least seem more alert.
“Yea…”
And then you lost consciousness or fell back asleep one, or maybe both.
An hour or so passed and you were coming down from the worst of your chills. Your teeth were no longer clicking and your skin felt much warmer to the touch.
He felt your head shift to look up.
“Hey,” he smiled, warmly down at you.
“Hi,” you turned your head and took in your surroundings. Saying you were confused was an understatement. “Where are we?”
“You don't remember?” his brows creased and his smile drained from his face.
“I- I remember…ELLIE!” you sat up quickly, he did too.
“It’s ok, she's ok. I promise.” he pulled you into a hug and as your bare breasts brushed against his arm hair you noticed for the first time that you were naked–you both were.
“Joel, what the hell happened?” you asked into the crease of his neck.
He explained everything, and you were slowly able to fill all of the missing holes of your memory–the fall, the battle in the water, the rock that took you out.
“You saved me again,” tears fell from your eyes.
“Sweetheart I’ll save you everyday if you'll let me,” he wiped them away with his thumb, you heard the gauze rustle.
“Wha?” you reached up and felt the bandage seeming to cover your head.
“It’s not as bad as it looks,” he chuckled, “Just a little thing. I might have been…excessive.”
You laughed and the strain of it made you notice the pain in your chest. You placed your hand over your heart and looked at him, obviously confused.
“Yeah…that might hurt for a bit,” he winced. “You- you weren't breathing when I got you out of the water–”
“You had to do CPR!?”
“I did.” he swallowed thickly and looked away.
“Oh, Joel… thank you.” you moved your leg over his lap and straddled him, you grimaced, your body was more battered than you thought. He openly began to weep, sobs wrecked through his body. You rested his head to your chest, and rubbed the back of his head until his breaths calmed and his shaking stopped.
“Ya know, this would be really hot in other circumstances.” you weren't in the mood, not even close. You felt like you had been run over by a truck, you were just trying to lighten the mood. “In a tent, naked with you.”
He chuckled, you felt him smile against you. He turned and kissed your soft supple skin. “I’m so glad you're ok…when you fell, just you can't do that shit.”
You leaned away from him, “What? Save Ellie?”
“Can't just…react. I could have tied something together—”
“If she would have fallen into the water, I would have never forgiven you. You know that right?”
He shook his head, “I never would have forgiven myself but- but darlin’…jesus.”
“I don't want to fight. Not about this and not right now, my head is killing me, but know this Joel Miller- if either one of you ever need saving, and I can, I will.” You grabbed a dry shirt and pulled on over your head. “It isn't something up for discussion, and I won't be talked out of it. You jumped in the water to save me- that was dangerous, we sometimes do dangerous things for the ones we love.” He looked like a kicked puppy but you continued, “If I don’t act, if I sit back and think about it- took time to come up with a plan, and then lost you anyway…then what–then what would be the point?”
You put your hand behind his head and pulled him closer again, whispering against his face, “I know you'd do the same so don't play all high and mighty with me, you will always lose that battle,” you placed a kiss on his lips.
He returned the kiss eagerly. Your lips were chapped but they had never tasted better to him. He pulled you both up so that you were both kneeling, and he pressed your body into his. He wished you hadn't put on the shirt, despite all of the previous contact he still felt like he needed to feel you.
“Joel…” you reluctantly warned into his mouth.
“I know…I know–but god I just want to feel you right now.”
You hummed in agreement and stayed for another minute or two, and then slowly backed out of his embrace. He smoothed back his hair and looked around for his extra clothes. You threw his boxers at his face, he laughed and grabbed you back to him- suddenly catching you off balance and the jerking motion hurt your head.
You hissed and massaged your temple.
“Shit I’m sorry.”
“It's fine..I think I need to lie down.”
“You ok?”
“Yeah, just need a minute.”
“You rest,” he tucked you in and kissed your forehead, “I’m gonna tell Ellie that you're doin’ better.”
“Kay,” you closed your suddenly very tired eyes.
Come morning it was snowing. It was a pleasant snow, the kind that was peaceful to watch with large flakes that floated down to the earth. You had slept straight through the night. Joel and Ellie took turns, taking watch and staying by you. You woke with a ravenous appetite, and ate enough for three meals. Neither of them said a word, in a humorous delight- they just watched you scarf down the food.
They both insisted that you rode the horse on your journey home. You didn't want to, but you would admit that your equilibrium was still somewhat off, and your body was very sore. So you relented and did as they asked.
When you returned to Jackson, the doctor examined you and said that you had a mild concussion and were still experiencing the symptoms from hypothermia, but were otherwise fine. You'd just have to take it easy for a week or two.
A week later you were working back in the armory, this time though you had no complaints.
When you came home, you opened the door and was immediately hit with a delicious aroma, “Joel? Ellie?” you called out a little suspicious. You tended to be this family's chef.
“In the dining room,” Joel responded.
You could hear the two of them whispering hurriedly, and you heard silverware clanking around. When you entered the room your jaw dropped.
They were both dressed up. Joel with a nice dark blue buttoned up shirt that you'd never seen- the sleeves neatly rolled up, dark pants, and his hair looked styled with…what was that gel? Ellie was wearing a white buttoned up shirt, and she had her hair down with one small braid off to the side (you had taught her how to braid her horse's mane and she was getting proud of her skills).
The ambiance was almost romantic, dim with nothing but candles lighting up the room. The table was set like they were expecting royalty and they had a bottle of wine in front of where you usually sat.
Joel moved to your chair and held it out for you, “Your chair Madame.”
“What is this?” you hoped you didn't look as shocked as you felt. You did.
“I made you dinner.” Ellie said proudly, “So sit.”
She left abruptly to retrieve the food.
You chuckled and sat. Joel pushed you in like a gentleman and then placed your napkin in your lap. “Wine Madame?” He was trying to do a french accent but it oddly just sounded somehow even more texan.
You giggled, “Oui Monsieur.”
He laughed, “Am I not garcon?
“A little boy?”
He looked flustered, “Oh…I reckon I don't know much French.” He filled your glass almost to the brim. He looked nervous.
You giggled again, “I don't either.”
Ellie walked in with a massive pot. It was a stew loaded with meat and potatoes. Then she went back to the kitchen and brought out some bread rolls that she learned to make from a sweet old lady.
“Ellie…what is this about?”
“I just– I just wanted to do something special for you. Joel said that you mentioned doing this before and I thought it might be something nice for you. I just…you fucking saved me.”
“Ellie–”
“No, I know. It still just sucks. How do you thank someone for saving your life ya know?”
“Easy.” you smiled lovingly at her.
She tilted her head in curiosity.
“You live yours baby.”
She moved to you quickly, and sat in your lap.You held her tightly, and she pressed into the nook of your neck.
Joel shuffled and stealthily wiped his eyes.
She sat up and looked at you, her eyes were red, “I don't really want to cry any more.”
“Then hop up, and let's eat.”
She hugged you again and then stood.
“Tell me about what you made me.”
She smiled and told you about everything in great detail.
Dinner was immaculate, that sounds over the top but it truly was. Once you had all cleaned your plates she returned to the kitchen and brought out a pie. A pie!!! You don't want to admit it, really you don't, but you ate half of it.
You were so proud of her and kept flooding her with compliments.
When everyone finished, you tried to help clean but they shooed you away. Joel grabbed your plate from you and whispered in your ear, “Go take a shower, I'll be up in a minute,” and gave you a rather passionate kiss.
You ran upstairs and took a very quick shower, your body was throbbing with anticipation. But alas, with belly full wine, pie, bread, and stew- after your warm relaxing shower- laying on your comfy bed that smelled of Joel's masculine scent- with a content mind and body, you fell asleep in record time.
When he entered the bedroom he saw you splayed out on top of the bed. “Sweetheart?” he asked softly- when he heard you deep breaths he immediately knew that you were asleep. It was hard to be disappointed when you looked so beautiful. He softly caressed your cheek, almost in awe of how incredibly lucky he was. He managed to gently maneuver you so that you were under the covers. He tucked you in and kissed the tip of your nose.
Then he unbuttoned his shirt, opened the dresser, and hid the ring back inside.

Eddie My Love
Tumblr media
Word Count: 680
Pairing: CG!Eddie Munson x Little!Reader
Summary: When everything is too much, Eddie will always be there to help you.
A/N: This is kind of rushed & I'm half asleep but I still really wanted to get some Eddie fluff out there before midnight tonight.... just in case 😭😭 No matter what happens, he's already such a beloved comfort character for me so I was still really happy to write this for him. Even though its pretty short I promise I'll have more Eddie fics in the pretty near future! 😄💕🦇
Your hands gripped tight on the door handle, knuckles bracing against skin as you held on for dear life. Even if you had the courage to complain, the most trained ear wouldn’t be able to hear you over the heavy rock music vibrating through the van. Eddie peeled out of the school parking lot, nearly tipping over as he took the turn towards his trailer. You squeezed your eyes shut; you normally didn’t have a problem with the reckless way Eddie drove, but the smaller you regressed, the scarier everything seemed.
As the van screeched to a halt at an intersection, Eddie took a moment to admire you, just as he did hundreds of times a day. When he saw your terrified face, his heart sank. He kicked himself mentally for not realizing sooner that you were little, and he immediately slammed a hand down on the stereo button to quiet the music. He should have known you were having a bad day, he should have noticed the signs, but he was riding on the high of a good session at Hellfire and your mood shift just didn’t register to him. In the newfound silence of the car, he could hear your labored breaths as you tried to calm yourself down. No more; that was his job now. His calloused hand reached out to yours.
“Shh baby, it’s okay. Shhh…” He whispered, leaning over to stroke your hand and relax the muscles that were still holding fast to the door.
The cold sensation of his rings against your skin was just enough to distract you from your fear. You began to fiddle with one, an angry pig that you thought was more cute than intimidating, twisting it around and around Eddie’s slender finger.
“Do you wanna wear it?” He asked, and you nodded. He slid it off his finger onto yours and you quickly resumed your stimming. Your breathing slowed. “Hey, yeah, that's it baby. You’re okay now, I promise. I’m gonna drive real careful back home, okay?” And you nodded again.
The light had long since turned green, but Hawkins was a small enough town that no cars were waiting behind you. True to his word, Eddie slowly pressed the gas pedal and drove you to his trailer, even staying below the speed limit and taking all the turns as carefully as he could. When he pulled into his parking spot, he did it ever so slowly so as not to jerk you around. He put the vehicle in park and unstrapped his seatbelt, hopping out and jogging over to your door. Without needing to be asked, he unbuckled your seatbelt and took you in his arms, helping you onto the ground. He walked you to the door of the trailer, fishing his key out of his jacket pocket and unlocking it with one hand, the other gripping yours nearly as tightly as you’d been clutching the car door.
When you reached his room at the end of the trailer, he let go of your hand, and already you missed his touch. But he was only gone for a moment, having to let you go so he could get the shoebox out from under his bed, the shoebox that contained your little gear. A pacifier, a big thick blanket, and a soft but matted teddy bear. It had been Eddie’s when he was a kid, protecting him from nightmares and bullies, and now he trusted the bear to watch over you too. He handed it to you, then offered the paci which you took, and then wrapped the blanket over your shoulders. Your eyes drooped, already exhausted from your meltdown and the long day leading up to it. Eddie sat on the bed and patted the spot next to him. You wasted no time, instantly positioning yourself in that familiar embrace, his scent of hairspray and stale smoke calming every nerve in your body. You knew it in your heart, as long as you had your Eddie, as long as you had your love, everything was okay.
