Heart Island on the St. Lawrence River is home to Boldt Castle. Built as a declaration of love for George C. Boldt’s wife, Louise, this castle stands apart as top stop for New York travelers.

In 1904, disaster struck when Louise suddenly died. Boldt never returned to the island as he could not imagine living there without his dear wife.

The incomplete castle stood dormant for 73 years until 1977 when the Thousand Island Bridge Authority made efforts to restore the castle to its final glory. The castle can be visited during the season (May-October) as well as the boat house - both destinations can be reached by ferry from Alexandria Bay.

Personally, we managed to see the castle on the very last weekend they were open. It was still picturesque, but crowded. The ferry rides were to die for and the entry fees were ~$11.00. There’s also a little spot on the island to get lunch and some ice cream while you wait for the ferry back 🍦

"JOY RIDERS COME TO GRIEF," Kingston Daily Standard. September 9, 1913. Page 3. --- Stole a Motor Boat, Which Was Sunk. --- Alexandria Bay, Sept. 9. - Another case of joy riding in a motor boat occurred at this place Saturday evening, brought to light by an accident occurring in which four persons narrowly escaped drowning.

The boat was J. B. Taylor's MacTay's, and in it were Arthur Gove, of this place, a chauffeur named Williams, of Watertown, and two men whose names are unknown.

The accident occurred about 12 o'clock, as the party was crossing the river in front of Belle Isle. In some unaccountable manner the MacTay ran into a coal barge, which was being towed down the river, and the bow of the motor boat was demolished.

All four occupants were thrown into the river, and the boat sank until just the stern was above water. Walter Wagoner, who has a farm on Wellesley island, was crossing the river on his way home in a skiff, and heard the cries of the women. He went to the rescue, and with the aid of two canoeists, who happened to be near the scene, pulled the four people out of the river.

"Motorboat With Liquor Is Chased," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 20, 1933. Page 5. ---- Compelled to Return to Gananoque - Liquor and Ale Seized ---- GANANOQUE, June 20 - The out-board motorboat "Lucky 2", driven by Charles Jobson of Alexandria Bay, with his brother John, as passenger proved unlucky yesterday afternoon when it was chased for about a mile by R.C.M.P. Officer Harry G. Lomas and compelled to return to Gananoque, from whence it had set out a short time previously with a load of liquor. Five dozen quarts of ale and fifty bottles of liquor were seized, and the boat and occupants allowed to proceed.

The last meeting of the Town Council until Fall will be held in the Council Chamber this evening.

Mrs. John Boyle, Garden Street, returned on Friday from Toronto, where she spent the past two weeks the guest of her sister, Mrs. Ethel O'Reilly.

J. G. Schaeffer, B.Sc., left for Saskatoon on Wednesday after spending the past few months here.
