The Withers/Pomeroy/Kaleo/McAllen families are pretty large ones, with family members spreading out all the way from middle of nowhere Chestnut Ridge to the Islands of Sulani. Most of the family lives here, in Sulani. Every summer, Sophia, her parents (Nora and Terrence), and her grandparents (Jimmy and Serena) visit Sulani for at least a week...or three. It's one of their favorite family traditions, because who doesn't love spending summers here?

Sophia was hard at work learning how to cross stitch. Sophia wanted to make everyone a gift, including her unborn baby sister. Her parents tried for a baby at the end of last year, and her mother Nora has been able to carry this pregnancy to full-term after suffering from two miscarriages prior. The topic of expanding the family has become a sore one for Nora over the last two years. She and Terrence struggled for months to conceive, and it brought great strain to them and their marriage. This time seemed different, though. Better. Nora hasn't made it this far into a pregnancy since Sophia--and she and baby girl were perfectly healthy. They've had the gender reveals and the baby showers. They've taken the maternity and family photos. Excitement seem to completely replace fear and hesitation; everyone was looking forward to the new addition to the family! Sophia was finally going to have a sister to play with (and boss around)!

Sophia had been waking up at sunrise with her great aunt and uncle, Tehani and Nick, everyday since getting to the main house. Sophia loved how cool their morning routines were: Nick, photographing early morning wildlife on the property, and Tehani, snorkeling or scuba diving to check in on local coral reefs. It was Tehani that got Sophia into cross-stitching; she showed her the basics. Sophia wanted to make a hoop for everyone before leaving Sulani, but she was having trouble with her latest stitch.

She huffed in frustration, sitting the needle and thread down. She held out the hoop to analyze it. Sophia turned it left, then right, then left again, turning her head the opposite way each time. It was supposed to be a rainbow, but the rainbow was a little wonky, and some of the stitching wasn't all that great. But, she made it all on her own. The hoop was for her Aunt Alix, as the family just celebrated Pride at a local festival yesterday. Sophia wanted to make something for her auntie and have it done by the festival, but it wasn't ready then. Still, she knew that Alix would love it regardless of its imperfections. Alix was arguably the best auntie in the world.

Sophia left the craft room and headed to Alix's bedroom where she was still sound asleep. The sun was peeking through the window, and Tehani's favorite tropical plants sat right outside, casting dancing shadows on the floor of the room.

"Auntie Alix?"

A soft groan responded to Sophia's question. Sophia let herself in, walking over to the bed. Sophia tapped Alix's shoulder. "Aunt Alix? I have something I wanna show you."

Alix groaned again, stirring. Their eyes opened slowly, groggily. They yawned, sitting up to greet their niece. Alix rubbed their eyes and looked at Sophia, who was holding something behind her back.

"What is it?" Alix arched an eyebrow as Sophia revealed the stitched hoop. Alix gasped, hopping out of bed, grabbing the hoop. "Did you make this??"

"Yep!" Sophia froze, and then her expression fell. "It took a lot longer than I thought it would; I was supposed to have like 5 done already."

Alix giggled at Sophia's annoyed face. An overachiever like her mama, that's for sure. Alix examined the hoop further, taking in the details. She loved how the rainbow was little wonky--it reminded her of herself. Alix smiled at Sophia, hugging the hoop. Sophia beamed.

"This is perfect, Soph. I love it so much! Thank you!" Alix placed the hoop on her desk before giving Sophia a loving hug.

Sophia looked out of the window to see the sun much higher in the sky now, and the cool breeze was no longer all that cool. Today is going to be hot, she thought to herself. "Auntie 'Hani said the dolphins were out this morning! Wanna go swimming?"

"Sweet, let's go!" Alix and Sophia got ready to make their way to the ocean, conveniently located in the backyard. Gah, life in Sulani is the best.

SO THE MCS ARE A MECHANIC AND TWO OF HER NEPHEWS

Alixir is the aunt! She's an eccentric woman, but she's the best mechanic in the settlement so no one really bothers her about it. She's 29 years old and spends most of her time inside her house completing her job, as well as her completely normal hobbies that do not involve conspiracy theories at all :) and also she has a girlfriend she's planning on proposing to!

James is her older nephew- He's 17, so old enough to get or start a job here, and he's asked to become Alixir's paperwork person until he can figure out whether he *really* wants to do something. He is currently seeking out a boyfriend.

SO!! Toby is a child! He is 9! He's pretty sure he's transmasc, but he made the mistake of telling his parents about the whole being-a-boy thing! Unfortunately, his parents do not support trans people, so in response they basically said "Oh you wanna be a MAN HUH??? WELL!! LET'S SEND YOU OFF TO GO DO HARD, GRUELING MAN STUFF WITH YOUR AUNT!! Then you will simply decide NOT to be a man! That is definitely how this works!"

Toby actually got really excited about it- of course, externally he had to be like "NOOOOOOOOOOOO WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO MEEEEE?!?!??" Buuuuuut internally he was like "YES YES YES I GET TO LEARN TO MAKE CRABBOTS AND BE MAD AT MY PARENTS YESSSSS" (jk his feelings are super mixed but he surprisingly does have a couple positive ones)

The worst part is that his parents didn't even tell anyone why they were sending him to Alixir's- Even with Alixir they were just like "HEYYYYYYY ALIXIR OLD BUDDY OLD PALL!! [Deadname] REALLY WANTS AN APPRENTICESHIP WITH YA CAN YA TAKE HER?" And Alixir accepted because yes

So at the point I'm at in the story, Toby and James are on their way to Alixir's shop/house for the start of their stuff and Toby is trying to explain that he's trans to James, who in turn is explaining some stuff to Toby about the town's queer community

And somewhere around there, Alixir is panicking because she thought the kids were supposed to arrive next week but she got her calendar mixed up and she only realized that dayyy
