Pairing: Jake "Hangman Seresin x Reader

Summary: Jake "Hangman" Seresin is a notorious leader within the Dagger posse of the old western territories of the United States. You, a recently orphaned socialite from the eastern seaboard, find yourself swept off to live with your older brother who has set down roots in said western territory. Determined to to make the best of your situation, what will you do when said outlaw sets his sights on you?

“Well, this is it,” Benjamin proclaimed proudly. You looked at the house before you. It was a large, two story home with freshly painted white walls and matching white picket fence surrounding the yard. A chimney was built on both sides of the house, and a giant porch hugged the front as well as the second floor. A barn sat further down the path that led to your new home, and a simple wooden fence stretched even further.

“It’s beautiful, Benji,” you started, “but how much land did you purchase?”

Benjamin rubbed his neck sheepishly. “About one thousand acres.”

Your breath caught in your throat. “One thousand acres? Benji!”

“Hear me out, Scout,” he pleaded. “The cattle we raise will bring in even more money. We can establish a legacy here!”

“We already had a legacy,” you muttered, and Benjamin fixed you with soft, pleading eyes. You sighed. “You don’t even know the first thing about raising cattle.”

He perked up. “Oh, Maverick said he’d teach me all I need to know. Even made suggestions on who to hire as ranch hands when the time comes. He’s the one that convinced me to seek out my fortunes.”

“Was he now?” you murmured, already plotting what you were going to say to the town’s founder when you met him.

“I know what you’re thinking,” said Benjamin, and you glanced up at him. “But this will be good for us, Scout. We’ll be a part of history and expanding our country. Making it better.”

You hummed, and he continued with a sigh. “The truth is, Scout, my firm isn’t making as much money as I had hoped out here. Ranching will help bolster our income until I can become more established in these parts.”

You sighed, knowing there wasn’t much you could say in argument. Instead, you turned back to look at the house, shadows growing darker as the sun finally disappeared below the horizon. “Let’s go then. I’m eager to see the new house.”

Benjamin practically skipped up to the house, holding the door open for you as you stepped inside. It was much grander than you were expecting. Wooden floors gave way to a grand staircase that turned into the next floor. You made your way through one of the archways and found yourself in the parlor. Your familiy’s furniture already decorate the room, and you brushed your fingers gently over the top of the grand piano in the corner. Continuing, you found yourself standing in a large kitchen, one of the fireplaces taking up a large portion of the far wall.

“If you’re hungry, I think Natasha left some stew for us,” Benjamin, striding over to where a pot hung above the small fire. You raised an eyebrow, barely containing your smirk.

“Does Natasha cook for you often?”

You saw a blush creep its way onto your brother’s face as he straightened up to look at you with a small pout. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business.”

You chuckled and waved a hand dismissively. “I’m only teasing, Benji. But, no. I’m not hungry at the moment. I’d much rather get some rest after my long day of travel.”

Benjamin nodded and led you up the stairs. He stopped in front of the second door on the right, opening it and gesturing for you to step inside. Doing so, you saw your familiar pieces of furniture that you had shipped off weeks ago. Your hand mirror sat on your vanity, and your wardrobe door was opened to reveal your more practical, every day use dresses. You walked further into the room and up to the window. Peering out, you could faintly make out the barn and rolling desert in the sprawling darkness. If you looked harder, you could faintly see the outline of the distant mountains. Turning back to face your brother, you offered a smile.

“It’s lovely, Benji. Thank you.”

Benjamin returned your smile and gestured down the hall. “My room is two down if you need me for anything.”

“I’m sure I’ll be fine for the evening. Go on,” you waved him off. “You need your sleep just as much as I do.

“Before I forget, Maverick has invited us to dinner with him and his wife, Penny, the night after next,” he said. You nodded, letting him know that you had heard.With one last smile, Benjamin closed the door behind him.

“Benji, have you gone shopping for supplies at all, or do you send poor Natasha out to do your tasks?” you cluckled impatiently, finding nothing but a stale loaf of bread in the pantry. You had managed to collect the eggs from the chicken coop earlier that morning, and that was all that made up you and your brother’s meager breakfast.

“I haven’t the time, Scout,” he mumbled, already gathering his things for the day. “Besides, you know I’m not much of a cook.”

“How you’ve survived this long, I’ll never understand,” you said with a roll of your eyes. Benjamin looked at you with a twinkle in his eye.

“Eye rolling is not becoming of a proper young lady,” he snickered. Scowling you made to whip him with the towel you held in your hand.

“Go, before you’re late,” you hollered as he rushed out the door. Sighing, you made a mental note to teach him at least some of the basics in the upcoming days. Turning, you marchd back into the pantry and looked at the empty shelves disdainfully with hand on your hips.

“Honestly,” you muttered, exasperated at how incompetent your brother seemed at doing the most basic of things. You made a list of things you would need in the upcoming days, and walked out to take another look at the house. As much as your brother could fumble on the small things, he did have an eye for home decor. There were very few pieces of furniture you wanted to move around across the whole house, and you made another mental note to let Benjamin know that evening when he returned.

Walking out the front door with a basket in hand for your supplies, your eyes were drawn to a small patch of the front yard that had been fenced off. How you hadn’t noticed it the night before was beyond you, and you chose to chalk it up to fatigue from your journey. You walked over and saw several gardening tools scattered along the ground. You realized this must have been the garden Benjamin had mentioned yesterday to you in his excitement.You added seeds to your list of supplies for the day.

You turned away from the garden and made sure to latch the gate to your front yard securely before strolling down the path into town.

Today was much like yesterday had been. People walking up and down the streets, shouting at one another in greeting, and children still running about. You wondered why they weren’t in school at this time of day. You resolved yourself to asking Maverick about it the next evening at dinner. Turning down on to the main street, you stepped onto the porch of the general store. Across the street at the saloon, you saw a group of men gathered by the enterance. One of them turned and saw you, and you supressed an eye roll when he lout out a long whistle.

“Hey there, darlin’!” he called out to you. He was handsome, you’d give him that. His dark skin glowed in the sunlight and you could make out his white smile from across the road. Strong muscles were hidden by his simple, white cotton shirt and beige wool pants. A hat covered his short, dark hair. Choosing to ignore the stranger, and by extension his four companions who had turned to look your way, you walked into the general store. the owner greeted you as you stepped into the spacious room that housed a multitude of goods from different places.

“Howdy, miss!” He chirped, leaning against the counter with a smile. He was older, dark skin weathered. “Haven’t seen you ‘round these parts before. The name’s Hondo.”

You returned his smile warmly. “A pleasure, Hondo. My name is y/n. My brother is Benjamin, perhaps you know him? He runs the firm just down the road.”

“Ah, yes!” He chuckled. “The lawyer from Baltimore. Well, miss, you’re in luck! I’ve just gotten back from Independence with new goods and wears! If you’re looking more in the ways of sugar and molasses, i’m afraid you’ll have to wait until my partner, Joel, arrives back in town. Should be any day now, in fact.”

“I see, and what is that you have today?” You inquired, taking in the multitudes of crates still scattered around the counter.

“Let’s see,” Hondo thought. “I got some salt and some fine new tools from St.Louis. I also managed to trade for some fresh produce down by Independence.”

“That sounds lovely,” you smiled as Hondo began showing you his wears.

You spent about a half hour picking out the best produce Hondo had to offer, making plans to return when his partner made it back into town.

“Hondo, I don’t suppose you have anything in the way of cooking wine?” You asked, placing your new wears into your basket. Hondo grimaced with a shake of his head.

“'Fraid not, miss.” He sighed, looking out past his door towards the tavern. “But Miss Penny should have somethin’ for you to use.”

“Maverick’s wife?” You asked, unable to keep the surprise out of your voice. Hondo nodded, a look if worry on his face.

“Penny runs the saloon here in town. Normally, I wouldn’t even suggest you go ‘round that place without someone accompanyin’ you, but everyone here knows not to mess with Miss Penny. You should be safe while she’s there.”

You handed Hondo the money you owed him, and gave him a grateful smile. “I’m sure I’ll be perfectly fine.”

“Just be careful who you talk to when you’re over there, ya hear?” He called after you as you moved to leave. “A lot of real unsavory types like to prey on pretty, littke things like you!”

“I will!” You called over your shoulder. You looked across the street to see the group of men from earlier had migrated down the porch over to, you assumed, their horses. Making sure they were safely distracted, you hurried your way across the road. Trotting up the steps, you made it to the door just as the group turned around to see you. Before they could say anything, however, you marched confidently into the saloon.

You weren’t sure what you had been expecting, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as you had thought, considering Hondo’s warning. The enterior looked a tad run down, but you supposed it had been in business for a while. It was clear that it was a beauty back in its debut. A piano was shoved against the far wall and several tables were scattered across the room with a few patrons nursing different liquids. A woman came out of a back room and spotted you. She was one of the most beautiful women you had ever seen. Dark hair framed a slender face, and bright eyes looked at you with a maternal warmth you hadn’t seen in quite a while.

“Hey there, sweetheart!” She called to you. “What is it that I can getcha?”

“Hi,” you smiled, walking closer to the counter where she leaned. You could feel the stares from the other patrons on your back, and you couldn’t help but stiffen.

“Don’t you worry, darlin’,” she started, casting a stern look across the room. “No one here’ll mess with you while I’m here. Name’s Penny.”

You held out your hand when you were close enough to the bar to reach her. “I’m y/n. It’s a pleasure.”

“You must be Benjamin’s sister. You two look so much alike, I don’t know how I didn’t see it sooner,” she laughed, the lines on her face crinkling. You couldn’t help but wonder if you would look as beautiful as she did when you were her age. She took your hand and gave it a tight squeeze.

“We get that quite a bit, actually,” you chuckled, dropping your hand back down to your side.

Penny’s smile grew wider. “So, how can I help you today?”

“I’m looking for some cooking wine. Hondo mentioned you might be able to help me find some.”

“Cooking wine, huh?” She chewed her lip thoughtfully. After a moment, she nodded, turning to head back into the back room. “Yeah, I think I just got some new bottles in, actually.”

You waited while she disappeared through the door. You heard the group of men outside on the porch, and it sounded like they had moved back towards the entrance. You let out a heavy sigh, realizing that you wouldn’t be able to avoid them forever. You took a closer look at the saloon. A set of stairs led up to a second floor that must double as an inn of sorts. Your brother had told you that's where he stayed while your home was being built.

“The townsfolk here are all kind as saints here, Scout,” he had written to you in one of his many letters. He hadn’t been wrong, well, save for one person. You frowned at the memory of the tall blond and his debonair smile. The outlaw probably wooed many girls with those good looks and charming words. You would not be fooled.

At that moment, Penny appeared back around the corner with two bottles of wine and another warm smile. You took the bottles from her gratefully, and slipped them into your basket.

“How much do I owe you?” you ask, but Penny shakes her head.

“No charge,” she says. “Call it a ‘welcome to town’ gift.”

“Thank you,” you respond. You hear the group outside laugh, and you can’t stop the slight frown from etching itself onto your face. Penny notices, and offered a sympathetic smile.

“Those boys may be loud and rowdy,” she begins, “but they’re harmless. I promise. Just walk out of here with your head held high, and if they start to give you trouble, you call for me. I’ll knock their heads together.”

You nodded your head. You made your way back to the swinging doors, but stopped just shy. You willed your nerves to settle, and straightening your shoulders, you marched as confidently as you could out of the saloon.

The men were all gathered around the steps, and their conversation stopped when you stepped out. You could see them all more clearly now, and to your dismay, they were all unfairly handsome.

“Hey there again, darlin’,” grinned the man from before. He leaned in closer to you with grin. “Name’s Javy. What’s yours?”

“Coyote, you asshole,” snapped the man to his left. “Tell her our names, too!”

Javy—Coyote—rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath that you didn’t catch.

“These here are my compadres, Bradley, Bob, Mickey, and Reuben,” he said, gesturing to each man as he said their name. He turned back to you with a smirk. “Now what about yours?”

At that moment, the saloon doors swung open, and a familiar blond strolled out with a hard set look on his face. His eyes darted from the group of men before you down to yours, and his grumpy expression melted into a lascivious smirk.

“Did you get it?” Asked the man off to your right, Bradley. Jake spared him a glance before returning his eyes to you.

“‘Course I did, Rooster,” he replied, walking closer to you. You gripped your basket harder and fixed him with a glare. “Fancy seeing you here, Scout.”

Rooster? You realized now that the Dagger Posse is who stood before you, and you suddenly found yourself feeling weary.

“Mr. Seresin,” you replied curtly, turning his smirk into a full blown grin.

“C’mon now, Scout. I thought we decided you’d call me Jake?”

“I don’t recall that being how the conversation went,” you sniffed. Navy cleared his throat from where he stood from behind you. You both looked over to find him and the rest of the squad grinning. Well, Bradley was smirking. The others were grinning.

“Is this the little spitfire you were goin’ on and and on about last night, Hangman?” Bradley-Rooster-asked, humor evident in his voice. You glanced over at Jake who had a dusting of pink spreading across his cheeks. Ignoring his friends, he looked back at you, some of his bravado returning.

“Ignore my friends,” he said, smile returning. “They don't know when to shut up.”

You hummed, “I could say the same thing about you.”

You heard a couple of snickers from behind you, and Jake cast a glare over your shoulder. Looking back at you, he continued, “Now, sugar. That wasn’t very nice. I’ve been plenty nice to you.”

You let out a noise of derision. “You and I must have very different definitions of the word ‘nice,’ Mr. Seresin.”

“If you let me,” he smirked, leaning closer so that his breath fanned over your face. Your eyes widened and your heart stopped for a brief moment at his proximity. “I could show you all the ways I can be nice.”

You didn’t respond for a moment, lost in the emeralds of his eyes. Blinking, you murmured, “Not a chance.”

You turned to the group behind you, offering them a tight lipped smile. “It was a pleasure to meet you all.”

“I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of you in the near future, sweetheart,” grinned Javy.

“Yes, well,” you smiled politely, “let’s hope not.”

You pushed past them and began making your way down the road. A hand gripped your elbow, spinning you back around so that you crashed into a solid chest of muscle. Looking up, stunned, you were once again in close proximity of Jake Seresin.

“Let me give you a ride home,” he offered, gesturing back at Whiskey. You shook your head, placing a hand on his chest to try and put some kind of barrier between the two of you. Jake took your hand in his, squeezing it tight.

“That's not necessary,” you breathed. “I live just down the road.”

“Then let me walk you,” he pushed.

“Down the street?” You snorted. Jake grinned, stroking the back of your hand with his thumb.

“A lot could happen between now and when you get home.”

“Goodbye, Jake,” you said with a pointed look, pulling away from him. You tried not to frown at how cold you felt without his presence next to you. You turned to walk away.

“I’ll wear you down one day, sugar! You’ll be in love with me before you know it,” He calls after you. You stop in your tracks, whirling around to fix him with your iciest glare.

“I am not something to be conquered,” you hissed. Jake stared at you for a long minute, a different kind of smile creeped onto his face. If you didn’t know any better, you’d have said this one was almost…affectionate.

“I don’t expect you to be,” he said finally, giving you a two finger salute. “I’ll be seeing you soon, Scout.”

I kinda wanna know about the shared trauma Annabeth and Alabaster both have from Luke and how they deal with it? How does Percy deal with them going completely insane just thinking about it? Does Annabeth ever realize she was used by Luke too (I feel like in a way she was)? I just kind of wanted you to explore this a bit more.

It's very important to start that the love was there. Luke loved them, they were his little siblings. It didn't change anything. It didn't stop the hurt. Perhaps it made it worse. But it's very important that the love was there.

Percabeth didn't talk about Luke after Manhattan, not really. That off-hand comment about his flying shoes in Cotg was the first time either of them mentioned him out-loud.

It's Alabaster coming into their life that opened up that baggage along with several more they were happy to ignore until it eventually burst.

I think it would be good for both of them when they come to the realisation that Luke wasn't evil and he wasn't a can-do-no-wrong-hero either. (He is still the hero of the prophecy of course but yeah, you all get it)

He was just a traumatised kid who grew into a traumatised young adult and caused the deaths and traumas of dozens of other kids whether he wanted to or not.

Just Annabeth realising she was the same age as when Luke took her in when she took the sky from him. Just Annabeth having a talk with Thalia, learning about Halycon Green, and how Luke changed after that, and how he again changed after that visit to May and the confrontation with Hermes. How he seemed to intentionally provoke and go after monsters. Just Annabeth mourning the loss of her dagger and her family. Luke has been dead from the start. Thalia will never be the cool 12 year old that took her under her wing again. Annabeth will out-age and Thalia will out-live both of them.

Just Alabaster realising hey, maybe Luke wasn't this almost god-like being he idolised. That maybe Luke himself didn't believe in half the things he promised. That maybe it shouldn't have been his, a 14 year old's, job to coax out a drunk Luke from the corner of Othrys he backed himself to. That maybe he wasn't wrong to think that he was used as an emotional replacement for Annabeth.

If Alabaster spared a drachma for every time Luke called him Annabeth— well no matter. He was dead now. (He would do anything to hear Luke's voice again, even if that was by being called Annabeth.)

But Luke didn't only hurt them, did he? Like I said he was their big brother. Just the memories of Annabeth staying up full night with Luke, him shielding her from the cold and the harpies as they sat on Thalia's branches. Just Luke protecting Alabaster from bullies who thought picking on the weird scrawny minor god kid no. 1263 would be fun. Luke who saw a little seven year old and took her in, promised family and tried to protect her to his best. Luke who killed himself for her. Luke who tried to maintain the familiy bonds he had with these children that followed him to the Titan army. Luke who tried to keep Alabaster away from Kronos as much as possible, and yet still promoted him to his second in command anyways.

Does that make up for the hurt? Does it matter he loved them if he intentionally or not got them in the middle of the crossfire? That's for Annabaster to decide.

They do miss him though. Once the gates open they can't stop the incoming emotional flood. Sometimes they curse him out, sometimes they cry after him, sometimes they sit in silence of their overwhelming feelings. Sometimes... well, Percy doesn't know, but it's better than Luke being a constant topic of their relationship arguments he guesses.

And it's the way Alabaster still talks like he's trying to imitate Luke: half successful silver tongue, laced with magic and the passion Luke used to have at the very start of the war. It's the way Annabeth paces around like Luke did when he was stressed, all lost in thoughts at picking at her elbows. It's the way all three of them are bone tired, and world weary and if they look at the mirror they just see Luke Luke Luke—

Some nights, when none of them can sleep, under the soft light of the moon and a cozy blanket, with hot drinks in their hands and kisses shared they talk about just how easy it would be to stage Olympus's downfall, how fast, how it would hit them before they can even suspect a thing... All hypothetical certainly, just whispers between lovers.

And Percy. He doesn't even have half the memories his partners have with Luke. But three of what he has stick out the most: Luke teaching him sword-fighting, him siccing a scorpion on little 12 year old Percy with no hesitation and him making him promise to not let things happen this way again as he bled out to death in his lap.

Olympians may have not went through their promise. Percy sure does intend to keep his own one though, gods be damned.

He'll just settle for being there for his partners for however long they grieve, though.

To grow up, to be your shoulder

I know I used to live slowly, and grow even more slowly. However, lately I have been learning to accelarate my pace and the progress. It’s my turn to be my family’s shoulder.

Today I heard a short conversation between my mother and co Loan when my mother asked her if she’d known about any way of making money, then let show my mother. There was a brief silence before she ignored the question by asking my mother if the customer had bought anything. I understood the whole implication of the conversation and I knew the exisiting hardship creeping in my familiy.

I know that my family’s income has, for a very long time, no longer met our needs, and the small business is gradually going down. I know that my mother and my father is no longer in the phase of life for keeping track with the busy lives and achieving material milestones; they all need to rest and have peaceful time of their own. But they still linger with working because of us. We are not capable of looking after them, and sometimes after our own selves.

I am learning to be independent myself, to take of my parent. I have to be strong and a quick, willing, eager learner. I learn how to prioritize, and my top priority is to make money, to achieve the financial stability and growth.

Happened to watch Student of the Year, an Indian movie, and I must say it’s a great one. Like most of the Indian movies it’s so long, but it was worth watching. I cried at the end of it. There’s just so much feels.

It was a story about familiy, friendships, love, dreams, and hopes.

At the beginning of the story I was rooting for Abhi because he was the new guy in a prestigious school who was acting that he doesn’t care of the status quo. Then, I began rooting for Rohan, the kid of the seemingly heartless tycoon. Rohan at first was presented as the bad boy type, chick magnet, and seemingly shallow doofus. He and Abhi clashed the first few minutes, I thought that they will just be enemies for the rest of the movie. But then, they became good friends. And Rohan’s soft side was seen. He was not the jerk I thought he was.

Rohan has a very hard to please, almost douche-y father, a mother who never stood up for him (probably because she didn’t know how to tell her husband he’s douche-y), and a very annoying big brother, the favorite. His dad was a business tycoon, a very wealthy man, but Rohan doesn’t want to be like his father. He wants to be a musician, but his dad said it was a dream for the middle class. Just wow, right? It made their relationship more thorny.

Sometimes I wonder why parents find it difficult to support their children’s dreams and aspirations. I get that they are looking out for us, wants the best for us, wants us to succeed, but isn’t it too much sometimes? They often want us to take courses that can land us a corporate job, that will get us a huge income which in turn will enable us to buy all the things that money could buy. But the thing is, money couldn’t buy the things that really matters--like joy, love, peace of mind, peace, salvation, and so much more.

I don’t buy into the argument that people would laze around all day eating cheetos and playing video games if you gave them a guaranteed minimal income. I say this based on personal experience, because my familiy connections already pretty much guarantee that I’m never going to be homeless or starving short of a major catastrophe anyways. I was once unemployed but comfortable for the better part of a year and I can honestly say that what I wanted then, more than anything else, was something useful to do. I think that most people would feel that way.

I'll do my best to summarize my situation, and am using estimates for days and amounts... I received a quote for auto insurance for $590 for a 6 month period from an independent auto agent. When I received my insurance policy and premium price it way nearly double (over $1,100). I cancelled the policy within a week after receiving the huge increase in premiums. Because of the time it took for me to receive my new premium and the 5-7 days for me to cancel, I received a bill for an amount due of roughly $40.00. This is my first post on my new Sims based Tumblr :D 

Some parts of this story are quite weird and dramatic. Oh well. Enjoy :)

This is the Rasoya family. It all started with Marvin Helms (the guy holding the baby). He moved to the big city, with the money his (wealthy) parents gave him. He moved to San Myshuno because he really wanted to start a professional cooking career. He was able to renovate a nice appartement. Marvin made a lot of friends in his apartment building and was especially close to Geeta Rasoya and her son Raj. They both were also into cooking like Marvin, Geeta a food critic and Raj was a chef.

After a while Marvin and Geeta started dating, despite of the big age difference. They went on dates and Marvin took her out for nice dinners. After a while Marvin felt like it was time to tie the knot. This was partially because Marvin had over spend a little ;), the bills were piling up and Geeta and her son had quite an income. Marvin was in a bit of a rush to propose and he proposed to Geeta in there guest room :P. Shortly after that they eloped in the same room. Very *cough* efficient *cough* romantic. 

After Marvin joined their familiy they collected  some extra money and decide to leave the big city. They found a new house in Windenburg, and they renovated this place too. Geeta worked a lot and Marvin and Raj were home a lot together. They became very good friends but that wasn’t all. Raj hadn’t been able to find a suitable partner for him and he was lonely. Also Marvin became pretty fond of Raj. They had a secret affair. The stepfather and his stepson. (Sounds pretty incesty this way XD). Everytime Geeta went of to work they would go on dates and hang out together. It was real love. One time Geeta caugth them flirting in her bedroom... She was pretty mad but forgot about it after a while. Marvin could hide his relationship with Raj anymore, they even became boyfriend and boyfriend now. On a romantic evening with Geeta he tried to WhooHoo her to death, but he wasn’t succesful. This was a real eyeopener for him. A few days after the attempt on Geetas life (where she knows nothing about still to this day, only that it was an intense night ;)) he had the difficult conversation with his wife and they divorced. She didn’t know that the reason Marvin wanted a divorce was her own son. Marvin patched things up with Geeta and they stayed friends. 

Raj and Marvin couldn’t wait to get married and eloped in their beautiful beach house. Geeta didn’t mind the two together at all. Which was a bit surprising. 

The family felt that they needed a new start and moved to a spacious penthouse back in San Myshuno. Raj had always dreamed of a big family and they adopted a cute little boy called Noah. They continue to life in their penthouse as Noah grows up. Raj and Marvin are planning to adopt another child very soon :)

I have just started trying to answer that question in the last ten years. It always perplexed me. How can a bunch of church people who drive shiny new cars, and hoard all the cash hang a picture of a guy on their wall wearing a robe and a beard, while wearing suits and ties. Quite honestly, from the conservative perspective, I think it serves as a reminder for them of what they could consider to be a terrorist. Christ threatened the establishment. He was against greed, but he was not a socialist. Just read the parable of the talents and it is clear he was a capitalist, comparing the kingdom of heaven and entry to those who manage their resources well. Two men grew their "talents", while one man buried his in the ground. The one, was dismissed for a form of irresponsibility, and really a form of hoarding, if you think about it, but on the lower side of the equation. But, the powers that were, still are today. So, they crucified him as the governing elite went through the crowd asking for another person to be released from jail even though Pontius Pilot declared him innocent... before having him crucified. These sales people for the establishment swayed public opinion and Jesus lost. The other part of the story included something called the resurrection, but for the sake of this post and understanding modern American Christianity, it has truly become centered around "stuff", and a way of life dangled before others as something to aspire toward, but seldom achieved by most. It is largely generational, and almost predetermined. But, you have to be careful with that because as I've recognized from my journey on the streets our poor in America are hardly poor compared to others around the world. We have plenty of poor minded people, but nobody lies in the dirt, hoping for a cup of rice at the end of the day, unless s/he is a moron. From the Liberal perspective, as I understand it, Christ is also viewed as a rebel, an agent for change, but Liberals are often socialists, which to me does not match up with the teachings of Christ. If anything, in my opinion, he was a capitalist, with compassion and modesty. He was not, as I call it, a Mansion Capitalist. In fact, by his own words, grossly misinterpreted in English from the original Greek, and Latin root, he is translated as saying, 'In my father's house there are many mansions', in English. But, the Greek and Latin words translated as "mansions", even today do not mean some monstrosity of a house. It means dwelling place, or basically a home. Not very long ago Alia, American familiies lived in multi-generational homes they kept for lifetimes. We didn't have this trade up until you get the castle mentality, and carry a mortgage forever too. It did not exist, because America was a much more modest country. You can see the change in the comedy scene as well. Comedy used to be "clean", except for literary techniques like innuendo. Today, we have almost obligatory blatant fart, penis, vagina & masturbation jokes from some of the top comedians. Call me a prude. I don't really care. That's why I don't rush to grab the mic, because the audiences seem to love that stuff these days. In the last 100 years the face of this nation has changed. I don't know that the governing elite have changed all that much. Greed has always existed, but it has permeated our society from the top down. So, while there are rich Liberals, many I've known tend to be less materialistic people. That's not to say there aren't modest conservatives. It's also not to say your wealth shouldn't be guarded and protected. You would be a fool to give your money away in the name of building homes for the homeless without requiring their work investment. Otherwise, many, if not most will just piss all over it. I've live among them for the past decade. I've gotten quite an education, but I have not gotten a bleeding heart. Yes, we need welfare and soup kitchens, and I believe in taking care of the poor as Christ taught, but not in the form of simple handouts, and much more in the form of nourishment... that being nourishment of the soul. To a very large degree you have the truly impoverished walking around like zombies, often ill mannered, and very ill equipped to compete in today's job market. We need welfare, as a matter of American dignity, but we also need welfare reform. It is an abused system where people get checks and still choose to live outside so they can buy drugs. It's a fact. So, put a bandage on that bleeding heart if you have one. As Americans we have a responsibility to try and lift people up, or at least we should. The "Get A Job" mentality is just as wrong as the "I Feel Sorry For You", mentality. Yet, our two political camps exacerbate these mindsets into overlooking the true solutions. Education is key, but you have an entire generation of people say from 40 to 60 who had computers thrown out there but without any orientation for them to use them effectively. Talk to someone over 40 and try to get them to text message you. All too often, they will say they don't know how, or they don't do that as if it's somehow profane. 40 might not be the best age example, but you know what I'm saying. We have people who should be equipped with certain technological skills, and should be in the workforce that don't know how to use a word processor, spreadsheets, or presentation programs. I know business owners to this day who still don't even advertise online. We also have lost the agricultural jobs to a large degree leaving many people who if you did teach them computer skills still stranded because there are only so many video games you can develop, but the earth is always there to be worked. We just use machines to work it instead. It's a trying time no doubt. What are we supposed to do with all these people who don't work? I think everyone should be required to work if the get benefits. It adds character. I'm not saying cut benefits. Maintain the benefits and let them climb out of public housing. Supplement their less than sufficient incomes of minimum wage by continuing the benefits, but at least require work. There are way too many people wandering around every day just trying to get effed up, and they don't even try to make a better life for themselves. They'd rather walk around and ask people for cigarettes and spare change than work for $7 and hour, because they have been conditioned to that by our "social safety" net. Just recently the state of Georgia has required food stamps recipients to work if they are of a certain age and able. There isn't anything wrong with that, and I can't believe I even suggested someone might think there is something wrong with that by making that statement, but it is and should have already been a requirement. You can find a job of some kind. You might not make a 100k a year from it, but at least it will instill a work ethic. When I first visited the soup kitchen I stood outside with a guy who tole me point blank, "Why should I go find a job? They already "give" me this much a month." That's wrong, and it's also NOT SOCIALISM because even SOCIALISM requires work. It's WELFARE. There is a big difference, but does everybody really deserve and equal share. Socialism stifles creativity, overlooks the individual, and spreads the bounty evenly... IF IT EVEN EXISTED. It doesn't. Neither does Laissez-Faire economics. We have a balanced system. It just needs a few tweeks, but if you're an American you MUST believe in the individual. If you have a great idea to make the world better in some way, then you should be rewarded. If you just sit around and live off the crumbs that don't leave you lying around in the dirt like a starving Ethiopian, then so be it, but you shouldn't get a check if you're not even willing to flip burgers. So, I know I went on a rant, but I have pretty much concluded that both Conservatives and Liberals today view Jesus as a sort of hippie, and I don't see him that way from what I've read. Everyone wore robes and sandals back then, even soldiers. The clothing has changed and that's why I liked what Pope Francis did with the modernized depiction of Jesus wearing blues jeans and sneakers. We get stuck in images in our minds that come from a book that doesn't even have any pictures. One thing is for sure, I don't think he was a hippie, but he was of the people, Oh Son of Man!
