My honest thoughts on Daryl Dixon 1x5.

!Spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen it!

Honestly? I’m screaming and crying and throwing up.

Personally, I don’t ship Caryl, but oh boy, was I excited about that radio transmission.

(I don’t hate Caryl I just really enjoy healthy platonic relationships in media, pls don’t hate me)

I’m like 99.99% sure Carol said that Rick was back and OHHH BOYYYY am I even MORE excited for The Ones Who Live— it’s honestly the perfect set up for the two series to connect. I will fight someone on this.

The fact that he was lied too for so long really shines though in this episode.

And I don’t mean that in a bad way— he’s literally just a kid, all he wants is a family like it used to be.

And now? He’s on a quest with the first male role model he’s ever had that he honestly looks up to, not because he was told too, but because he wants too, knowing he’s going to be left with strangers.

Hearing him ask why he couldn’t just leave with Daryl honestly broke my heart.

And ISABELL!!!!

Girl was just going to kill herself?? Just like that??

Don’t even get me started on Daryl’s outburst.

I don’t think we’ve seen him like that throughout any of the main series. At least not towards a child.

I stg I thought he was going to start crying when Laurent said he just didn’t want to be alone.

I know I did. I sobbed so hard, I had to PAUSE and gather myself after that one.

This is— truly a side of Daryl we’ve never seen before. His past is coming up but by bit, he’s going in between who he’s become and who he started as.

And he was willing to lose his eye?? Are you being fr right now?

I’m absolutely losing it.

This is still fresh because I literally JUST watched it, but as for Cons, I don’t think I have any?

Obviously, he’s a little more clumsy in this series than what’s to be expected given his history.

This episode really just gave me everything I’ve been wanting in terms of storyline.

We learned about the ship, about what Daryl did, why they’re after him.

We got to see, up close, how the walkers are being mutated. It’s a man made mutation, which is so fucking interesting— you cannot convince me that it isn’t.

We finally got to see the speech

Isabell, Laurent and Daryl are all in the same place again. Granted, they’re surrounded by people who hate them but that’s beside the point.

Using people as walker food?? On such a large scale?

I have so much more to say but this is already so long.

hoenstly there is just too much to say but like ill start with the overarching problem of both seasons which is that they keep repeating the same tropes and same twists, which is like... fine i guess if they did something with it? if the cyclical patterns had a point or some kind of build up for character development? but no it has no bearing on Makoto or even Laurent as people which is GARBAGE give me a crumb of character development or tangible stakes PLEASE

on that note, would have loved to see a story where damage begets damage and trauma is taken a little more seriously. what really gets my goat is that there was so much potential for like the motif of cycles/generations of damage begetting damage and i kept hoping for it because they recycled the same tropes and scenarios so much that it felt pointed

i know its supposed to be a fun/goofy series but i wish they had the balls to go dark like. i would have loved to see an ending where laurent is treated like the asshole/complicated human he is? or idk a story that reckons with the fact that makoto is so broken that he runs a human trafficking ring ??? 

also kinda wish abby stood up for makoto more because their friendship fuels me and it sucks that she stood by and watched team confidence absolutely fuck him over

if i had to distill my grievances into a single point i think itd be that they totally sacrificed the characters for the sake of ~conning~ the audience which felt kinda belittling. like in some way it felt very, aesthetics over content in that it quite literally looked beautiful and had a really interesting vibe but idk you cant rely on the ~vibes~ to carry the story?? case in point bringing back the old villains in the finale. the weird thing about that was, in season 1, they had to be unsympathetic and evil enough for the con against them to feel morally acceptable, but then they just bring them back like nothing? like the vibes of the show suggest that theyre scooby doo villains and theyre pretty harmless but for season 1 to make sense they had to be Evil so idk. 

the high point of season 2 is the relationship between makoto and akemi tbh, its the only thing that felt tangible and also lol akemi (and maybe abby) feel like the only 2 who actually give a shit about makoto

also dorothy is a gem of a character shes so cute

anyways makoto deserves better abby deserves better dorothy deserves better season 1 deserves a better sequel fuck laurent thierry all my homies hate laurent thierry

It’s been a long, stressful week. So, I’m going to drunk-watch Twilight (this is part 1, I’ll do a part 2 later). So far, I have drunk watched and reviewed Eclipse, Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Breaking Dawn Part 2. I will probably drunk-watch and review New Moon some time in the near future. My sober review of Twilight is that it is the best of all the movies (But New Moon though, I know, it’s a very close second for me). I love that it was meant to be like a cool, niche indie film and Catherine Hardwicke is the best. The baseball scene. The meadow scene. The bio scene. Iconic. - So I know it’s like .0 seconds into this ish, but I just realized when Bella’s tlakign about dying in the place of someone she loves @ the beginning, we see the deer and then in BD2, when the mountain lion tries to kill the deer, Bella kills the mountain lion. Feels like symbolism idk.

- Phil really is like 25 years old lmao. Does it ever say how old he is? He looks young af. 

- Forks seems super depressing. Like the scenery is cool, but like there’s no one there? Only 3,000 people? Boring af.

- everything is so green and blue and aesthetically pleasing, thank you catherine

- i just realized the picture above the shelf with cds is also of a deer. the deer is important.

- the friendship between charlie and billy is all i want in life
