All You Zombies
It was certainly an exceptional read. A time travel paradox.
Books like this make me feel like I've given my being more meaning in a stoic sense of sorts. Knowing these things whether untrue or not make me think deeply of things I know to be true.
It inches me towards a freedom I'm yet to understand.
I felt this from a nine page piece surmisable to "I'm my own grand-paw"

Predestination (2014)
Tumblr media
Predestination started as a short story by Robert A. Heinlein titled -All You Zombies- and it works better as words on the page. Film's added visuals will allow those familiar with the concept of time travel to figure out key plot points ahead of time. Details. The execution is so good you'll be delighted to see it play out. It's atypical but if you see enough movies, that's a nice change of pace once in a while
When John (Sarah Snook) walks into a bar, he begins making small talk with the bartender (Ethan Hawke). His life story connects unexpectedly with the bartender's true identity; he's a time traveler searching for a terrorist called the "Fizzle Bomber".
I deduced how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. If you're unfamiliar with high-concept, weird time travel stories you may not. Either way, it’s not a big deal because you hardly ever see films like this, which prominently feature time machines but no loose ends. It sets up its rules and follows through all the way. No last-minute chase sequences that will later have you saying “Wait, but how could he do that if…” or random elements that under scrutiny don’t hold up. This is the kind of film that was meticulously written and planned out. Whenever that’s the case, it’s hard not to admire the precise machinery at work.
Predestination is split into two parts. The time travel stuff with the barkeep, and what turns out to be an unpredictable and moving drama with a strong performance by Sarah Snook at its center. Some of what happens is so wild it could’ve easily crumbled, but the performances, the human elements that make up the drama, combined with all of the talks of trips back and then forward in time make you understand every development and decision. The film’s complex timeline also means there’s decent re-watch value in this film written and directed by the Spierig Brothers. It’s fun to figure out and then confirm where/how all the pieces fit together.
Predestination is a sci-fi story that takes chances. There are times when it IS weird but the strangeness is integral to the plot. There are some gutsy decisions made with the casting and the narrative. It works as a mind-bender and as a drama too. It may not surprise you the way it wants to, but you don’t often find science fiction films as intelligent as Predestination. (On Blu-ray, March 16, 2017)

mid year book freak out
tysm for tagging me @godofsmallthings !
number of books you’ve read so far: 16
best book you’ve read so far in 2024: probably there’s always this year by hanif abdurraqib or ocean at the end of the lane by neil gaiman
best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: gregor and the code of claw i think! by suzanne collins it’s the fifth and final book of that series
new release you haven’t read yet but want to: i also don’t pay too much attention to new releases but a traveler’s guide to the end of the world by david gessner came out last year and i want to read that! (david is one of my teachers i had this past semester and he’s a fucking HOOT i love him sm)
most anticipated release for the second half of the year: i don’t think this comes out until early next year but you didn’t hear this from me by kelsey mckinney! also obviously sunrise on the reaping by suzanne collins (sorry for cheating)
biggest surprise: the ocean at the end of the lane i think. or the christie affair by nina de gramont (both so so good)
favorite new author (debut or new to you): i’m going to have to say hanif abdurraqib for this one
newest fictional crush: uhh i guess luxa from the underland tales (but she’s 11 so in a ‘i think ur a badass little kid, let me be ur older sister’ way)
book that made you cry: i don’t think i have cried over any books this year??? i’ve been busy crying about everything else
most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): tbh i haven’t bought many books this year but my most recent library borrow is the heaven and earth grocery store by james mcbride and the cover of it is so striking it’s what made me pick it up in the first place
book that made you happy: the christie affair was such a fun read and it had a very agatha christie-esque murder mystery in the middle of the plot i loved it
what books do you need to read by the end of the year?: i want to finish the heaven and earth grocery store! also want to finish wolfish by erica berry and read the candy house by jennifer egan, big magic by elizabeth gilbert, pilgrim at tinker creek by annie dillard, and at least one more of hanif abdurraqib’s books!
i’m tagging @allyouzombies @dune1984 @cassscainss @irulancorrino and anyone else who wants to do it please do and say i tagged you!!!
