the fact that we never actually got to see kuboyasu interact with saiki in gym class is such a crime
hes like the most perceptive of the group so it wouldve been so fun to see how kusuo would hide his powers around him
i kinda wouldve loved to see them flesh out the "shadow leader" bit a little more instead of just forgetting about it lmao, yasu being sorta like hairo and thinking saiki has hidden power or something
son boy raccoon trash can man suffering in a dnd au as a cleric bc his warlock will not stop committing murders and he has to keep coming up with reasons murder is valid to convince the gm its fine and under control
i do think it is legitimately very funny whenever someone tries to make the claim that lavabending is inherently a very slow subbending and therefore not good in a fight. specifically when using that argument against Bolin's skill as a bender.
Sure, I feel like in very specific instances with Ghazan that could be a fair argument to make. It takes him a moment to destabilize the Ba Sing Se wall and for him to kick up enough lava to destroy the airbending temple. (to the point I would argue that if Bolin had been versed in lavabending like he was in s4 he would have swept the ground with Ghazan), but in moments where he's actually in a fight his lava is incredibly quick.
Just the lava frisbee on its own is an incredibly quick move
But making that argument with Bolin in particular is absolutely batshit when outside of lavabending he is an incredibly quick fighter. I would say it is one of, if not the, most defining things about his fighting style. He moves very, very quickly and uncharacteristically agile for a earthbender. This is a known thing. Like
I am not the first person to say this but no other earthbender does backflips like he does. And THEN with lavabending he is just as quick if not more so
Bolin since season 1 has had an uncanny knack for bending incredibly fast, and his lavabending is no exception to that rule. It's honestly something that haunts my brain all the time because how quick he is with it low-key breaks the balancing? a little?? Like earthbending was always shown to be very strong but in turn it was slower than other types of bending, but with Bolin that doesn't really seem to be a hangup he has.
idk how much stock i put into those "gen z is more conservative than past generations" think-pieces from a few years back. but it's very possible for a person: to believe that climate change is a problem, to support (or be part of) the LGBT community, to believe in universal healthcare and social services, to support religious tolerance, to fight for expanded housing and labor rights, etc etc etc, and still, like, unabashedly hate women on a level you wouldn't believe existed
my locked tomb hot take of the day is that the way Harrow’s symptoms are presented in HtN line up much more closely with religious OCD with poor insight and psychotic features than schizophrenia. She shows almost no signs of paranoia or delusions (G1deon really was trying to kill her! It’s absolutely true that the other houses would swoop in like vultures if they knew her house’s true position! Her sword and psyche were both actually haunted, to the point that Alecto could hitch a ride in her body. She is never shown in the text to hold a belief that is inconsistent with reality, IMO) and her only true psychotic symptom that we see is hallucinations, and she seems to most of the time have some idea that they aren’t real, which indicates a level of self awareness incompatible with schizophrenia. She also doesn’t seem to display many cognitive symptoms like thought block or disorganized speech and thinking. The rest of her behavior is highly obsessive (compulsive praying, wearing face paint even when nobody is around, obsessive studying, needing her food to be arranged on her plate a certain way) and is very in line with someone suffering from religious scrupulosity. As someone who has experienced both OCD and psychosis, and knows how the symptoms can overlap, this is is the hill I will die on.
I don't feel like I can contribute in any meaningful way to your points, so I'll just put this out into the world and say that I appreciate your insights!
Speaking from a #meta perspective: I know that around the time HtN came out, Tamsyn gave interviews talking about her own experiences being hospitalised for mental health reasons and implied that was what she was partly drawing on when writing HtN. I can't remember if she called Harrow schizophrenic or stated that it was her intention to write her as such, and the author is dead anyway. Plus, obviously, the fact that someone's writing was informed by irl experiences doesn't have to mean that said writing is a 1:1 parallel for those experiences, expecially in a sff setting where ghosts exists and in fact there's something that Harrow can see and nobody else can.
TO ME, the fact that people who experience psychotic episodes can recognise themselves in Harrow's internal monologue and experiences is more meaningful than whether Harrow “really” has a given specific disorder or she's just seeing ghosts. The point is that SHE feels a disconnect from reality and that she's delusional and cannot trust anything she remembers or reads. Nobody in-universe is ever going to diagnose her, you know? The series itself doesn't claim to be straight-up representation for any specific named issues — things like Cytherea's cancer or Harrow's mental state are left ambiguous and partly influenced by magic. I think the fact that readers can relate to some symptoms some characters experience is more meaningful than whether these symptoms all point to something that can be diagnosed unambiguously.
okay sorry to be a faggot but! listener's culture around respecting the bodies of the dead and then some fanon interpretations of the significance of mandalorian armor and what "desecration" looks like to mandos and... there's something here i know it
like obviously they can't really "pass down" carapace in the way mandos can pass down armor, but both groups can be interpreted as/written as having a no-one-but-family deal
but then what happens with the naasade? does their armor just go to a local goran to be melted for foundlings? and the listener equivalent, when there is no next of kin?
while tagging had some thoughts
Mandos have the Ka'ra and Manda and all that, and "stars-touched" can hear it like other Force-sensitives (and I'm writing literally an entire fic that is mostly just about different Force traditions so . I'll stop there) but the listeners become disillusioned with their own "ancient council of rulers"; somewhere I saw a post that talked about how listeners not disturbing the bodies of the dead was a remnant of the refusal of the old gods' body-takeovers
So! the two cultures reasons for not stripping/disturbing the bodies are super super different, one out of respect for the spiritual ancestors and one out of worry that those ancestors will come and terrorize them again--but the similarities!
I will do my best but at the end of the day "good representation" is always going to be secondary to my quest to create the most specific Little Guys in the world sorry
went out to brunch for my friends birthday and nobody believed me when i said everyone at my workplace doesn't like me and wants me gone so now i'm laying in bed crying and like gaslighting myself about it. lol but the eggs benedict was great
hey!! i came across this video on my tiktok recently by someone named Lila, and i asked her if she was cool for me to respost this on tumblr (they said yes) because i think they made some really great points that i would love to add on to.
while on the internet, it is SO important to learn how to distance yourself. when you’re too wrapped up in the internet its so easy to get overwhelmed by information and hate and just. negative things, but those things DO NOT define you as a person!! i wish this was taught and talked about more!! other people do NOT define who you are as a person, whether it’s something they’re saying to you or as Lila said, how they identify! you are your own person, and how you define yourself is up to YOU.
now, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t identities that are harmful. i’ve been listening to the afab transfem conversation, ive been harassed over it. transmisogyny is a serious issue in the trans community and i wish it was addressed more seriously. i will absolutely recognize the TERF’s that are using the term. the issue is, that is still an identity. so many people, especially intersex people, have explained genuine medical reasonings and other reasons for why they use this term.
this is where i once again talk about distancing yourself. i am not trying to say dont worry about these things, because discourse within the community IS important! it helps bring things to attention! but like Lila and other people i mentioned ^ have said, not only are a lot of the terms people are using medical (nobody’s business, people don’t owe you their medical information or history. you are not their family or their doctor.) but there are people who hate the entire community regardless of what they identify as. harassing other minorities is not the answer.
i just started the newest episode of d20 and i know that this isn't useful bc all of the episodes of burrow's end have already been recorded but @quiddie if you (or anyone else), for whatever reason, need to come up with more words for stoats, consider:
sometimes i get very passionate about my job and how important it can be to give an accurate history of a moment in american history that's frequently referenced but which the general public in america has a lot of misconceptions about
and other times i spend an unproductive day trying to explain outdated tax law to a child who isn't equipped to understand, but who is very intent on asking "why?" repeatedly and i think maybe i understand why this protest specifically gets misrepresented and glossed over in schools.
