Another Month, Another Sunset

Well I did say I would return to the subject of shows I’ve watched ending since Mario Kart 8 dropped back in 2014, so this is the continuation of that dropped point.

I have watched television animation for as long as I have conscious memories. I grew up with it. I define the stretches of my life based on the big show I watched during each of them: Rugrats, Hey Arnold, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, The Mighty B!, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe. I was mostly a Nickelodeon kid as you can see, because that was largely the only channel we had around here when I was growing up.

I’ve dabbled in many other shows that aired at the same time as these, but there was always the one I focused on. But each of these shows either ended, whether by its own accord or not, or frankly went to pot and I jumped ship. It was the time when things were stewing in the latter show in 2018 when I decided maybe I’d have my fun elsewhere.

There were several months when I didn’t latch onto any show out of lack of interest, I might say. I watched some but I wouldn’t say I engaged with them. 

That all changed in October 2018, when, at the suggestion of someone I used to know along with a forum I frequented, I checked out Hilda on Netflix. I’d never read the comic it was based on, nor did I have much experience with a show designed for streaming.

But despite all that, I loved it. It felt like a rejuvenation into a medium I’d followed since youth. It opened my eyes to the potential of a series made for an online service.

Perhaps as a way to fill in a void left by season one ending, I decided to see what else I’d missed in my admittedly narrow-minded viewing. This led to my current favorite (remaining) show, Big City Greens.

My slate grew to those two. And then there was She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Carmen Sandiego, Amphibia, Victor and Valentino, Infinity Train, It’s Pony, The Owl House, Glitch Techs, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, The Midnight Gospel, Kid Cosmic, Centaurworld, City of Ghosts, Invincible, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Inside Job, Arcane, Tear Along the Dotted Line, Maya and the Three, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Hamster and Gretel, Bee and Puppycat, Pantheon, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Kiff, Hailey’s On It!, and a couple others I’ve checked out some clips of.

Granted, I like some of these shows more than others. I wouldn’t call any of these perfect because with enough time I can find things in each of them that irk me. But I certainly feel I have a stronger awareness of shows that have aired in the past five years than I have for the rest of my life. Gaining a lot more online awareness probably also helps in that regard. I feel like I’m learning more about myself as an artistic person and writer by thinking about these and wanting to write about them.

With the end of Hilda, I feel it also marks the end of an era. Nearly every show I mentioned above has ended, whether by its own terms or not. Some have questionable conclusions, some were cut short, and a handful are ongoing or even just begun. But 2024 will mark the first year in some time where the big show that got me to get further into animation watching will not be on the horizon.

Now, I don’t think Hilda is going away forever. We’ve likely all seen Luke Pearson is already writing a prequel comic. There are more supplemental and side books being released faster than I can keep track of. Most of the shows I mentioned that have ended are still with us in a bevy of ways. With some networks looking for the next big hit they feel content to keep on reminding people about the stuff they already love to keep them engaged. For instance, for all their corporate shenanigans, Disney is doing a good job at keeping people aware of Amphibia.

I think the process of shows going away has been made easier by maintaining a broader range of shows to watch. Even with Hilda finished, I have the remaining episodes of Big City Greens along with the shows that just premiered and have more episodes on the way. Then there are all the upcoming shows that could grab my attention in the ways many of the previously mentioned have.

It does feel bittersweet, knowing we’ve all watched this show and came together for it and may be left wondering where we go now. I regret not engaging with you all more in the past, but who’s to say that can’t change now? At the end of the day, a show like this and many others extend far beyond what’s on the screen.

We’re all here to celebrate a show that we enjoy and that inspires us to create, to tell stories, to meet new people, to reflect on who we are and where we can take ourselves. Looking back, I have mixed feelings on the last season of Danny Phantom, but it was the first show where I talked with folks online about it and looked at fanart and read stories, and it is in this way that I met some of my oldest friends. Some of the most genuine, wonderful people I’ve known for over 15 years. That’s the beauty of an artistic creation like this or any other show.

Looking at the upcoming slate of shows and seeing just a bunch of stuff I don’t recognize does add to the hesitation. It’s easy to think that nothing new could live up and this empty feeling will persist. The strongest sense of “emptiness” I felt recently was when Amphibia ended, but this one is also up there because of what its end brings with it. But looking ahead, who’s to say we won’t all find a show that will enrapture our senses and inspire us the way our past favorites did?

I certainly didn’t think I could move on from Danny Phantom or Gravity Falls or Amphibia at those moments. But with some time, I’ve been able to keep moving forward and find new things that inspired me in all new ways. It may take time, but I think many of us will do the same here.

I’m sure I’ll keep reading the stories, and seeing the fanart, and thinking of my own ideas of stuff to share. To paraphrase Star Trek II, it’s not really gone so long as we remember it.

Hi there if you havent already I would suggest giving it another go! The nowhere king is so creepy, and the promise of season 2 (the seeds they sowed for it, idk if there WILL be a season 2) makes it feel like we're going to a darker place with more depth and lore in the world! Also, rider and horse make me Cry. It is offputtingly quirky and grating at first, but that is all part of the setup, and you get used to it

Oh gosh this is a very, VERY late response and I apologize for that (tumblr did not let me know I received an ask ;; ). But it seems this is about Centaurworld which certainly was a series I was unsure about looking at the initial trailers and the like.

You will be happy to know however, I have watched the series through twice (the second time because I had a friend watch it)! And I do find it pretty wildly charming! I’m typically not a huge fan of shows with humor that borders on ‘rAnDoM’ and I was sort of afraid that the show would be nothing but off putting and grating (as you mentioned it is at first), and just not my cup of tea, but I gave it a try anyway. And lemme tell you there are moments in the show that have me cry laughing. The show also kept me hooked with those hints of something darker, the taurnado scene especially grabbed my attention early on.

I don’t think the shows perfect, the second season had moments that dragged a bit in my opinion and some characters seemed to either get little to no development (I feel like Wammawink deserved so much more screen time in season 2). Though to be fair pacing a show’s story seems like a nightmare and a half, especially if you don’t have that guaranteed season or more to finish up. I still enjoyed the final season immensely, and frankly any complaints I have are outweighed by the pure drama of that scene of the princess and the nowhere kings final moments in the final episode. Like damn.

Overall great show! I loved it and I’m happy I gave it a chance and I’m so sorry it took me almost a full year to respond to this ask!

Hey yall! I've been pretty inactive for a good while and I just wanted to share that I'm still alive! It's been a pretty rough year so far with high highs and low lows and I've been doing my best to ride it out while remaining a human person but it hasn't left me much bandwidth for much else, but coming on here and seeing all the wonderful message consistantly flowing into my ask box has just been wonderful and heartwarming. 💜

I'm so sorry I haven't really responded to much, there's a ton of asks that I want to put drawings on the responses but I'm also trying to maintain a healthier relationship with my art, so if you submitted a question I will likely get to them eventually! But it's always been a slow process and now I am not rushing.

To those of you who just sent the loveliest messages about finding my centaur art and your passions for centaurs, THANK YOU! I'm afraid I'm selfishly keeping those in my inbox so that I can read them regularly and smile, you guys are so wonderful and it restores my faith in the world when I read your lovely words and thoughts about pieces of my world you stumbled across.

I'm adjusting slowly but surely to a much more creatively demanding job so I'm hopeful I'll soon be back to drawing niche taurian worldbuilding and double trunk anatomy problem solving soon! Hold on with the knowledge that I have the layout for a centaur compendium mostly finished and of course just because I'm not drawing centaurs at the moment doesn't mean I'm not thinking up new cultures and problem solving their weird issues in my head! It never stops!

OKAY OKAY LISTEN LISTENNNNNN

So, I finished watching centaurworld, and ya know, I vibed pretty well with it; most of the songs were cool, I liked most of the random whimsicalness with the cynical undertone, I thought that most of the main group was going to be just a bunch of joke characters but they actually grew on me a lot (except for the giraffe, I wish they didn’t put him in the show. Also I hated the character design switch they gave horse, like okay, I’m down with making her more cartoonish to kinda foreshadow that she now belonged in this world or something, and the part with Rider not recognizing her was nice, but they could have made the design more cool, they honestly did her so dirty but that’s not the point).

It was a vibe, but I wasn’t thinking it was an all time master piece or anything. So I was on the last episode (SPOILERS by the way), and they were fighting the nowhere king, whose song was cool but I wasn’t super interested in him. But the desperation in his voice when he wanted to get out got my attention, although I didn’t think that much of it. So it looks like it’s all going to shit and then the mysterious woman comes in lookin like she’s gonna save the day and I’m thinking, ‘okay, so this is going to be her little redemption or something, showing that she really does just want to keep people safe or some shit)

BUT THEN, THE BIGGEST FUCKING PLOT TWIST OF MY FUCKING LIFE, the nowhere king starts talking so FUCKING GENTLY to her, and her voice is shaking as she chants some shit and she can barely look him in the eyes, then he says HE FUCKING FORGIVES HER FOR TURNING HIM INTO SOME FUCKING GOOP MONSTER and bows his head to accept whatever she’s gonna do to him, and I’m like oh my god were they exes or something and Zulius says something about dying if they leave right now and WHEN I TELL YOU I’VE NEVER RELATED TO SOMEONE AS HARD AS I DID THEN.

It’s been days, and mysterious woman and the nowhere king’s relationship is all that I can think about. I don’t know what about it, but suddenly it’s everything I could have ever wanted and more. I really hope that they were lovers, I’d love that more than anything (watch the nowhere king be like her fucking horse or something god I hope not).

So I’ve done a small headcanon of the mysterious woman and the nowhere king being childhood friends, way back when the two worlds were connected, and maybe the nowhere king was like a prince deer centaur or something but he was an outcast, maybe because his goop magic is a bad omen or a curse or something. But anyway, he gets harassed so bad as a kid but then mysterious woman, also a kid at this point, steps in and defends him and becomes his only friend and ally. They grow up together, learn about their magic together, then they start dating and it’s very sweet. But then, for some reason, the nowhere king starts going off the hinges, maybe he’s bitter about how everyone treats him or something, and he does some shit and the mysterious woman had to stop him, which resulted in probably the war and in the end she turns him into the monster, maybe by accident, and seals him in the in-between, probably on purpose.

Ok so I just finished centaurworld and thought I should share my thoughts on the 2 final episodes

Spoilers for episodes 9-10

- wammawink abandonment issues

- the songs here are sometimes good but sometimes they make things sooooo slooooow aaaaaaaa, this whole episode will be so much better removing some of the songs (*cough cough* comfortable Doug, I literally skipped it)

- I saw some people complain that the show is moving too fast I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEYR TALKING ABOUT

- it’s so slow at some points!!!

- I think it should’ve had 10 minutes each episode, like over the garden wall or infinity train I will also finish it faster that way (ok now I’m done complaining)

- my theory: the nowhere king used to be a human that women used to be his wife/girlfriend (he said “I thought about you this whole time”) but something happened and she had to kill him in a magical way that turned him into this and he will only get worse every time he dies

- HER (the women)’s SONG IS SUCH A BANGER WTF

- gosh I love riders reactions

- nooooo I don’t want anyone to be saparated!!! Why couldn’t rider join the group!!!! im SO traumatized by these kinds of endings T-T

- but hey! At least not the whole gang had to separate at the end like you know where (*cough cough* love live [I cried so hard] also I was so scared they will separate the whole group in episode 9)

- also I wanna know more about riderrrr she might have such a nice personality we won’t get to see

Conclusion: wow these episodes made me so ooo TENSED!! I WAS AT THE EDGE OF MY SIT! I wonder what happens to the beast the nowhere king also there’s so many plot points for season 2 in these episodes and I really can’t wait for season 2!

one problem tho: NO UNICORNS! EVEN HORSE DIDNT BECAME A UNICORN!! THIS IS UNFORGIVABLE!!

OK I've been binge watching Centaurworld and I just finished yesterday. Let me tell you I love this show and I can't wait for it to get a season 2.

I really want to know more about the Nowhere King (his song is terrifying and I will be having nightmares) and his relationship with the human who I can't remember the name of (if we were given one)

Cuz there was so much to unpack in the few scenes they interacted(the entire interaction with him bowing his head and saying that even though she made him this way he(...they? Do we have a confirmed gender?)forgives her was so good) and I'm really tempted to say they were lovers or best friends or something.

And with his coughing and stuff with the black tar is he sick? Or was sick? There's so many questions!

Rider and Horse are adorable as always. Also, do either of them have names? Like Horse I get, Rider did call her Horse so she might have just been an non creative namer. But Rider did interact with people (most famously the general even if it wasn't shown) and I doubt they all called her Rider?

So I finally finished watching Centaurworld, and I just wanted to share some of my thoughts about it. Putting this under a cut since it does contain some very brief negativity

I’ll admit, I was not a fan of this show for the first few episodes. The whole thing was way too bright, I found most of the characters kinda annoying, and the humour was… eh.

But around halfway through, I think this show really started to shine. The shamans were all super unique and interesting, the songs range from good to amazing, and I actually really started to like some of the characters.

I like Horse! I love how determined she was to get back to her rider, and her insecurities about not recognising her, or rider not recognising her in her new form. I’m still not sure why they made her tail talk, they haven’t done much with that yet, but since he’s voiced by the legendary Paul F Tompkins (voice of Mr Peanutbutter from bojack horseman), I wouldn’t mind seeing what they do with that in the future.

Wammawink too! (Did I spell that right?) I found her overbearing at first, but she’s grown on me. Her backstory of losing her home and family only to find a new family with Horse and the others is 🥺🥺🥺. She’s just such a sweetie!

Rider is cool too! We don’t really know much about her yet, and I can’t wait to see more of her!

I’m still not a fan of some of the other characters in the main group and I still find a lot of them more annoying than entertaining a lot of the time (except for Glendale, I can’t be mad at her). But who knows? Maybe In the future seasons they’ll get developed a bit more outside of just being mostly comedic relief.

Also excited to learn more about the Nowhere king and that woman (she never got a name, right???) Goopy Eldritch characters are super rad.

Anyway if you haven’t seen it yet give it a shot! It’s got some very interesting lore and characters, even if I’m not a fan of the first few episodes!

Boy, the month of September was something else for me in terms of gaining F/Os.

(I ended up putting a 'read more' on this post as it got kind of lengthy, but check below the cut for some new F/Os!)

Very early on into the month, I fell for who might be the single most obscure F/O that I have, that of course being Xenia, the preliminary transfem foxgirl mascot for Linux. Most of early September was spent thinking about her non-stop. I even gave my fursona a redesign for the sole purpose of pairing him with her (Remind me to finish his key artwork so I can show him off)!

Then, I watched Centaurworld.

I fell for Zulius before I had even touched the first episode of the series, and that love only intensified with every episode I watched (Episode seven in particular 100% sold me on F/Oing him because... well... look at him.) I also ended up deciding that I wanted to F/O Glendale as a familial F/O, since she's such a loveable character coupled with the fact that we share a few traits!

THEN, I played the first chapter of Deltarune, which in turn got me back into Undertale. Granted, I didn't finish it until this past Friday, the first of October, but that's not to say I wasn't considering F/Oing a couple of characters from Deltarune beforehand... which is exactly what ended up happening.

Firstly, we have Ralsei, whom I've considered to be the third of my younger sibling F/Os! I knew early on in that I wanted to consider him as a brother, though because we don't have canon ages for any of DR's main cast (As well as taking into consideration that a majority of people see him as like fourteen or fifteen), I decided that he would be a perfect fit as a younger brother!

It should come as no surprise that I'm F/Oing Ralsei— from his very introduction in Deltarune, he is an absolute cinnamon roll. He has such a cute design, and he's always giving Kris words of encouragement; there's even an option to hug him during his battle tutorial (Which you bet I jumped at the chance to). Precious characters like him are my weakness...

... which is funny, because I also ended up F/Oing Susie, who's the exact opposite. Anyone who's seen the one Deltarune meme that's been making the rounds lately can deduce that Susie is that of the brash type, who finds that being 'the good guy' isn't a title that suits her. I mean, she threatens to bite Kris' face off at one point.

Without saying too much on how chapter one concludes, I can at least say that Susie isn't all malice, and that there are definitely some people that she cares strongly about. It's for that reason that I wanted to see her as a platonic F/O, and as a result, she holds the title of being my first platonic F/O that isn't from the Aether franchise. I do quite like strong and protective characters, and she absolutely fits that bill.

So, yeah! The four F/Os that I've talked a bit about in this post have now all been added to my F/O list, and you can expect me to start reblogging and creating content for the four of them! 💙🤍💙
