Over the first week of the two week wait for the next race, Charles has been spotted back home in Monaco--always saying hello to his supporters and spending time with his family and his friends. Just recently, his childhood friend Jorsi has posted a photo dump to his instagram stories of “Vacation with Friends”, and in the fifth story, it seems to be Charles and a mystery woman. Both seem deep into a conversation with what looks like a book. Well...we say mystery woman but with who has been spotted around and Charles heavily interacting with--it may just be Kim Soyeon--who has recently posted to her instagram with photos containing the same background and her at the beach of Monaco. None have said anything, and in fact, supporters of hers have come to back her up, stating, “They are simply friends. Soyeon always tries to support her friends 100% and visit her friends whenever she can!” While some are on the fence, considering his story a couple days back of an new piece he has created (piano) with the caption of “melody of first meeting” and what people (Soyeon’s supporters) say is that the female voice at the end was hers. A Simpler Day, a Simpler Week - A Writing Experiment - Day 6

Ayo. Welcome to day 6 of me writing something every day. This one is pretty short and sweet, but here we go anyway.

So, in the last post, I mentioned injuring my ankle through overuse on a Friday, taking a 2:30 AM ER trip on Saturday and getting home around 7:30 AM the same day. Since then, I've been keeping off the ankle and wearing a boot to keep it from moving around on me. This means I can't really drive anywhere, can't go up and down stairs very easily (which is fairly comical given how many flights of stairs are in the duplex I live in), and can't workout during the week. Abbey is also on a business trip for the week so I'm alone for the time being. Turns out you really miss the extra caloric room built into the day from just a workout. Today I went over the limit into equilibrium territory to get rid of some leftovers that needed to be eaten. In that same vein, I also miss Abbey as, not only is it fairly lonely without her (though I can cope with help from Dil and the lads, especially during the day or in discord) but also that she helps eat some extra lefties that need to be eaten when she takes them for lunch and I don't have to be responsible for everything in the fridge. I suppose that's the tradeoff for only doing cooking up to this point to be specifically having two portions for dinner and then having some lefties ready for the rest of the week. I suppose the bonus was that the grocery bill was much this week as I'm only cooking twice (to stay off the foot) and only for myself.

Last night I made a creamy tomato-base soup and added cubed tofu to it. We usually have it with tortellini, but I wanted to try and make it a bit lower-calorie and use one of the two packs of tofu I had gotten for the week. to go under it, I oven-roasted some broccoli and sweet potatoes, a go-to vegetable in our apartment as they 1). are delicious and 2). make a bunch. They go really far into the week and are great as impromptu veggies for meals, should I not have another one, and are great on the salads (I call them "Big Salad" because they are colossal and delicious) I sometimes make for lunch throughout the week. I invited Dil over to partake for some company and to just chill. It was super fun. We watched the first episode of Arcane again, semi-preparing for season 2 of that, and the first two episodes of the newest season of Jujutsu Kaisen, which he is binging to catch up to as I write this. The week is, about as much as it can be, off to a rip-roaring start. I just need this ankle to cut it out and we'll be ok. But now my right knee started kind of hurting too, so I'm worried this might be going a bit deeper than I previously thought. That or I'm still somehow using the leg too much. Time will tell, I suppose.

Second-to-last thing for this entry: I start with a new therapist tomorrow. The therapy office I was going to had a change in how they can bill my insurance and the therapist I was working with at the time was one of the ones that wouldn't be covered. Our jobs are paying a bit better now but we're trying to buy a house and possibly have a kid within the next 3 or 4 years so every penny we can save is important. So I opted to get transferred to a new therapist that would be covered. It sucks to have to start over entirely but I was only about 5 sessions in with the initial therapist, so it's not like there was a years-long connection being severed. I still liked her a lot, though, and I had made some really good progress even in that short time. We'll see how this shakes out.

Last thing, short and sweet: I'm really nervous and scared that the endocrinology visit won't be able to be moved up before 11/29 and it'll take till even longer after that to get the surgery scheduled. I feel more and more like I'm just deteriorating or wasting away. This ankle thing is really rough and with another several months to wait to get this stuff treated I'm genuinely frightened of how bad it may get. I've got patience but I don't know how much is left.

You and Ayo spent the rest of the day binge watching you favorite TV show greys anatomy for the 100th since you wouldn't have much free time once school started up. Eventually she went back to her apartment and you were once again by yourself but you pushed the sadness and loneliness away taking the time to think of ways you’d be able to start fresh and focus on school. No boy drama, none of that lovey dovey clouding your reasoning or work ethic. You may have a fling or two on the side but they were strictly that and nothing more, it would be you and your degree this time.

You woke up around 6:30am and began getting ready for your first day, deciding to dress up a bit or at least look like an actual human since the rest of the year you would look like a total zombie. Not to mention your plans for after class.

By the time you finished getting dress and doing your make up it was already 7:30 and time for you to start heading to class, it was only a 10 minute walk from your dorm but to be on the safe side it would probably be best to leave now.

And of course, your stroll to class was nothing short of hellish.

 Apparently everyone had the genius idea to try and get to class early and bombarded the sidewalks with large crowds making it hard for you to maneuver through. 

Thankfully the crowed thinned our as your rounded the corner entering the building for your 8 class at 7:50, you sat down in your seat 5 minutes before class was supposed to start and released a sigh of relief. You took out your notebook and laptop and doodle on your paper for a bit before class started. You glanced up as the clock hit 8 find it odd that you had not seen your professor or any familiar faces yet but realized some students were still filing in.

 “Is this seat taken?” “No I--” The familiarity of the voice made you still but it was when you looked into his face that you were truly froze, “Uh-Um n-no it’s not.” You said to T’challa as he sat down, hell you figured you’d have to talk to the man eventually seeing as that he appeared to be popping up everywhere you went but having a class with the him was more than you expected. 

“You look good, great actually.” you let out a nervous laugh, subconsciously thanking yourself for deciding to look nice for once and mumbled out, “Thank you.” He nodded his head as he took out his notebook, just as he was about to say something else your professor walked in at 8:15, “Good morning class, excuse my tardiness seeing as though i’m not a morning person you can expect me to be a few minutes late, attendance is required here and i don’t allow tardiness often so as long as you’re here before me we should have a problem. Now everyone grab a syllabus and lets begin.”

Your professor, Dr. Ginny Lawson had to be the sweeties woman you’d ever had the pleasure of learning from she taught literature but her class was always less of a class and more of an experience, you sat in a few times during your junior year and knew you had to learn from her. “Alright everyone, now for your first assignment you will be doing a research paper on the difference is the romanization of old literature to that of now literature. 12 page minimum.” the whole class groaned and seem to sank as she spoke but all perched back up with hopeful ears as she said, “Since this is the first assignment of the year i will be merciful, you’ll all have a partner. Turn to the other person at your table and say hello, you two will be spending lots of time together.” Your eyes widened as you looked at your professor, the tables were set up with two people seated at each and of fucking course T’Challa was at yours, why couldn’t you have just been the bitter and ruthless ex and tell him he couldn’t sit? “Take a few minutes and get to know each other, exchange information so you can later meet up and decide a plan to conquer  this assignment. I want papers on my desk by next Wednesday. Whenever you’re finish your free to leave.”

This was it, you managed to avoid much talk with the man all class but now you had to talk with him. “So—“ “I’ll ask her if she can switch partners.” He said before you could get a full sentence out, you just stared at the man uncertain of what to say, 

“I know this is awkward enough by us just being in the same class.” he said as he stood and moved towards your professor, you were too shocked to say anything as he walked away, had you treated the man that badly? Not like he didn’t cheat on you. Thought your inner voice but something in you still held out hope that he didn’t and it was that part of you that caused you to call out his name. 

A name that dropped so easily from your lips and sounded like music to his ears, a name you honestly thought would never having meaning to your life again but felt so right as you said it. “I-Its fine T’challa. It’s not that big of a deal right?” you noticed the bit of strife the man held in his eyes about the situation knowing it still ate at you, but you dismissed it all as you lightly touched his forearm before pulling back and give him small smile. “You still have my number? Send me a text later today with your schedule and i’ll do the same.”

The rest of the day was spent going to different classes and listening to your teachers speed through their syllabus, thankfully you managed to continue to be a hard working student in the past three years which would allow you to have a fairly manageable last year. 

You finished you last class around 3 and checked your phone seeing a text from Shuri. Still on for coffee? you had almost forgot as your replied back, Of course, is now good? a reply came through instantly Sure is. you chuckled and typed it a reply, Meet me ‘Heart-shaped Cafe’ after getting her confirmation text you head to the cafe yourself.

“Shuri over here.” you said as you waved her down to the table you sat at, “This cafe is amazing.” said Shuri as she looked around still gazing at the small yet beautiful building. “I know they changed it a bit since the last time i was here, it used to be my favorite spot on campus.” “why’d you stop coming?” She asked with a curious look in her eyes, “Me and your brother used to come here together, It was the first place we went on an actually date when we got here.” 

You smiled thinking back on the memory, while a sigh left your lips, you looked up at shuri who held a sad smile on her face as well, “Sorry for the bad memories.” you shook you head as the waiter began walking towards you to take your order, “They are far from bad, matter of fact I wouldn’t change them for anything.”

Your orders were brought out quickly and your and Shuri laughed and caught up on each other’s lives over the past 3 years.

“So about this man that had the audacity to cheat on a queen such as yourself, what’s his name?” you thought for a moment, Shuri must’ve had no idea that her brother had been the one to do it first but that was further in the past than you wanted to go with her, “Erik Killmonger, one of the hottest men on campus and now one of the dochuest.” 

Shuri squinted her eyes as she placed her hand in her chin, “That name sounds so familiar.” “He is the captain of the basketball team, plus if you do go here you’ll hear just about every other woman talking about wanting to bone him.” “I think he’s trying to become the new chapter leader of the beta rho beta.” “How’d you know that?” 

Jesus the girl was more in on what was going on in your college but it’s not like you’d been going there for three years. “T’challa was telling me some prick was trying to challenge him for it.” a small smile raised to your face, “So he finally beat M’baku? That’s good, i know it was important for him to follow in your father footsteps from when he went here.” Shuri gasped as she said, “You remember that?” you scoff as you finish your coffee and say, “Of course! It was one of the things on his list of ‘must do’s’.” 

You chuckled before continue on and saying, “He even said once that he’d stay in college an extra year so long as it meant he became the head of the frat one day.” You stayed in your reminiscent state for a bit longer before coming back to reality and noticing Shuris watchful eyes. “You know he misses you.” 

You shake your head in disbelief and sigh, “I doubt it, i mean he’s the king of the campus, he can have any woman he wants. He didn’t want me then so why would he want me now?”

Poor, Poor Y/N has no clue, more went down that dreadful day three years ago. I wonder when it will all come to the light? Once again thank you all so much for reading and shoot me a DM if you would like to be tagged!

JUST IN:Malami ordered my arrest for refusing to implicate Magu – Lawyer

A lawyer, Victor Giwa, says the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), ordered his arrest because he refused to implicate the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Giwa said this in a statement on Sunday after he was released from the EFCC custody.

The lawyer was arrested alongside one Fatima Hassan last week shortly after they testified before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel which is investigating Magu.

Giwa’s former client, Donald Wokoma, who was a Director at Damijay Integrated Services, had told the panel through a sworn affidavit that his bank account was frozen by Magu unjustly and he subsequently hired Giwa to sue the EFCC.

Wokoma, who is a former special assistant to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, had said after the court ordered that the account be unfrozen that Magu through his ‘boys’ demanded N75m from him as a condition for obeying the order.

Wokoma, who submitted text messages and audio clips of his conversation with Giwa, said the latter told him that Magu had demanded the money and advised him as his lawyer to pay the bribe.

However, when Giwa appeared before the panel, he denied the bribery allegation, insisting that Magu was a man of integrity. He was later arrested.

Giwa, however, accused the AGF of instigating his arrest.

He said this in a statement titled, ‘Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) Is Using Donald Wokoma, My Erstwhile Client Against Me For My Refusal To Testify And Indict Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of EFCC, At The Justice Ayo Salami Panel Investigating The EFCC Boss’.

The statement read in part, “On August 18 and 19, 2020, I was invited by the Justice Ayo Salami Panel, sitting in Aso Villa to testify against Ibrahim Magu through a conspiracy between the AGF, Malami (SAN) and Donald Wokoma, the sacked Special Adviser to Vice President Prof YemiOsibanjo, whom I have represented and secured a judgement in his favour.

“Donald Wokoma was investigated for fleecing the sum of N250m from amnesty programme, through his company Damijay Integrated Services, by receiving contracts he never executed. His account was restricted by the EFCC.

“On July 11, 2020, Donald Wokoma was scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Akanbi at FCT High Court, Lugbe. Donald Wokoma was absent and I represented him and the case was adjourned till October 10, 2020, for arraignment.

The lawyer said surprisingly, Wokoma in a sudden twist, accused him of being a ‘Magu boy’.

“It was my refusal and my stand to defend the truth and not to consent to the subversion of Justice that the AGF ordered my arrest and that of Fatima Hassan, a lawyer, whose testimony absolves me and Ibrahim Magu from any wrongdoing,” Giwa added.

Attempts to get a reaction from the AGF proved abortive as he neither responded to calls nor a text message on Monday.

His Spokesman, Umar Gwandu, could not also be reached for comment.

How to Minimize Injury & Maximize Comfort Behind The Bar

Spending hours on your feet, interacting with customers, operating machines, and preparing drinks are just some of the tasks that baristas complete daily. There’s a lot that goes into transforming beans into beverages, including grinding, tamping, measuring, brewing, and pouring. It’s a fun job – but also one that can take its toll on your body if you aren’t mindful.

Because it’s such an active, high energy occupation, it can result in strains and sprains if you don’t manage your movement. Over time, this could cause lasting injuries.

To make sure that your time spent behind the bar is as long and pain-free as possible, here’s how you can prevent your daily tasks from interfering with your future performance.

Reducing The Strain of Everyday Tasks 

As a barista, you’ll spend your day moving your joints and muscles into various positions as you prepare customers coffee. In a single shift you’ll be slinging and knocking portafilters, tamping espressos tightly, and angling your milk pitcher to pour latte art – often at a high speed, and dozens of times an hour. 

In addition to these tasks, you’ll also be lifting and packing heavy deliveries, containers, and packages in narrow and awkward spaces, or navigating shelves that might be too high or low. It’s no wonder that a study by Wilfred Laurier University found that the majority of baristas surveyed suffer from lower back and shoulder pain attributed to their job.

Understanding the risks present in an average day’s work can help you make improvements to your actions before physical therapy is required – or in severe cases, before lasting damage takes place. 

Only medical professionals can diagnose and treat workplace-related injuries, but there are a few ways you can reduce your risk of developing them.

Start With Your Posture

Because being a barista involves spending many hours upright, your posture plays an important role. Paying attention to your body placement and weight distribution is key. By balancing and centering your body weight, you’ll prevent more than back pain. This is because poor posture can exacerbate everything from muscle aches and pains, headaches and heartburn.

Turn your attention to the way you stand. Do you tend to lean forward or push your hips out? Are your shoulders rounded or up around your ears? With a few adjustments to your alignment, you can break these postural habits.

Bram Dekker, Senior Barista at Bocca Coffee in Amsterdam, understands the importance of posture. As one of the cities most talked about specialty coffee bars, he has had to learn to be aware of how he stands and moves. He says “I try to be wary of my stance – if my shoulders are upright, or if my back is straight. Because most of the movements [baristas make result in our bodies] bending slightly forwards, it’s important… to be aware of that.” 

If you find that your posture or stance could do with improvement, aim for a neutral one. The NHS recommends imagining a string pulling up from the base of your spine through the crown of your head. From here, pull in your abdomen, keeping your shoulders relaxed and parallel with your hips, and your feet hip distance apart. 

By centering your core, you increase your overall stability and balance, preventing injury and providing more power to the movements you make.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Spending a lot of time on your feet means that what you wear on them matters. It’s not uncommon to come home with tired, swollen, and blistered feet because of the incorrect choice of footwear.

Podiatrist Patrick Raftery recommends that those required to stand for long periods at work choose shoes that are enclosed, fasten well, and have inner cushioning. It should also have a firm back for ankle support, toe wiggle room, and a wide, non-slip heel. If you’re predisposed to foot pain, you might want to invest in compression stockings or special inserts as well.

As standing uses 20% more energy than sitting, it can tire you quicker. Taking regularly scheduled breaks will help you reduce foot fatigue. These breaks don’t need to be long for you to reap the benefits. Research suggests that short, frequent breaks of just 10 minutes can relieve muscle fatigue and improve mental well being.

Manage Your Movements

While poor posture and long hours spent standing can cause discomfort and tiredness, the unique movements required of baristas are usually what cause injuries. Research by an American worker’s compensation insurance company shows that café workers lost more days due to workplace injuries than any other workers in the restaurant category. Repetitive stress wrist injuries (often nicknamed Barista Wrist) resulted in an average loss of 265 days.

By taking care with how you prepare drinks, you can reduce the likelihood of this occurring. However, it’s worth noting that there is no single best technique. How comfortably you can work will often depend on factors such as your height and the height of the machine. If the machine is placed too high or too low, working with it will be uncomfortable.

According to Karen Fitt, Director of Melbourne Hand Rehab and President of the Australian Hand Therapy Association, it’s common for baristas to develop injuries related to manual tamping and placing the portafilter in the grouphead. These actions require them to adopt an awkward shoulder posture and palms up posture, which can lead to pain.

There are a few guidelines you can follow to reduce your risk of injuring yourself while preparing coffee. When tamping, do so with your elbow at a 90-degree angle and your wrist straight. The pressure being exerted should come from your arm and not your palm or hand.

Wearing a flexible wrist brace can relieve secondary injuries from chronic conditions such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or tendinitis. However, Bram cautions that you should “take care of yourself [and] listen to your body – if your wrists/back/anything is hurting, don’t work another shift. It’s not going to get better, it’s going to get worse and worse if you don’t let it rest. That one shift might doom you to one week of sitting at home not being able to work.”

Organize Your Environment 

After adjusting your movements to be kinder on your body, you can turn your attention towards optimizing your workspace. You may not realize it, but small adaptations to your surroundings can improve your workflow. This, in turn, can make a big difference in the amount of strain you put on your body, and make your work day easier.

Kaspar Tammjarv, freelance barista trainer and reigning Dutch Latte Art Champion, is a big believer in adjusting your workspace to work for you. “Because I have back pain, I try to minimize awkward rotations and bending of my body. This means that at high volume cafés I keep the milk out near the steam wand or at the top of the fridge ready to go, and set up my station flowing from left to right to minimize back and forth movement.” 

The kind of adjustments you’ll need to make will depend on your personal preferences and unique physical surroundings. Kaspar notes that “there are always small adjustments that can be made to fit your body. Never be afraid to do a little rearranging if it makes more sense for the way you move.”

One uncomfortable bend, twist, or crouch may not seem like a big deal when it comes to your form. However, when you’re rushing through these movements dozens of times a day, the stress on your body can add up. Keeping your station organized in a linear way will minimize this – as will ensuring that you bend and lift using the correct technique. 

According to the Mayo Clinic (an American not-for-profit academic medical centre), you should observe the following movements when lifting a large or heavy object:

Start by standing as close to the object as possible. Kneel with one leg on the floor, or squat with the object between your knees. 

Engage your core and lift the object. Power the movement with your legs, breathing normally and resting the object on your knee before standing.

Use your legs to stand. Don’t twist your body, and keep the object close to your frame.

By doing so, you’ll reduce the strain your back and knees, and instead activate your core and legs.

Being a barista can be demanding – both physically and mentally. Thankfully, a little awareness and preventative measures can go a long way towards preventing pain and injury. By paying attention to your everyday movements, you can go on to have a long and healthy career doing what you love behind the bar.

Welcome to Korea!

Hello friends! I apologize for the social media radio silence. I had every intention of making ‘daily’ posts, but we have been SO busy.

*Please forgive me* 

Here is a a brief synopsis of what I’ve been up to:

Wow! I can’t believe I am actually in Seoul. Sitting in bed, with Thao & Caeli, eating macarons and watching Boys Over Flowers. Life is so good right now.

We have been in South Korea for a full week. They aren’t kidding when they say time flies when you’re having fun! Our travels from Indianapolis went smoothly. After a couple of hours in Toronto on layover, we were off on our merry way to Incheon International Airport. The plane felt spacious and was fairly comfortable, especially for economy class. I watched movies and TV shows to entertain myself, but I also found myself looking out the window a lot. We flew over northern Canada & Alaska for a long time and the landscape was breathtaking. We could see vast mountain ranges capped with snow, emerald forests, and even massive river networks frozen over with ice. That in itself was a cool experience and a humbling reminder of just how much of this big, beautiful planet I have still yet to see. I also have never been so well fed on a flight before; 3 meals, constant beverage service, and snacks at your beck & call. I definitely recommend Air Canada for your air travel needs. 

Inna’s Travel Tip #001: Neck pillows are you (& your butt’s) best friend! Making sure to reposition yourself at least every 2 hours to avoid painful pressure spots will make a huge difference during your in-flight experience.

For those of you who didn’t already know I have been given the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Seoul this summer! DAY 1 [5/22/17]:

This is our first official program day in Seoul, and we have a full schedule ahead of us! Thao & I started our morning in the hotel room with a plate full of fluffy scrambled eggs and mini cheese hot dogs. This set the precedent for what I knew could only a fantastic spent afternoon at Ewha Womans University.

For lunch, we were honored with a welcome luncheon hosted by Ewha’s President of International Affairs. They shared information about Ewha’s many opportunities available to international students, both men & women. They were so incredibly kind to us and enthusiastic about our arrival. We all left our meeting with full bellies and a cool new tote bag & reusable water bottle.

Lunch Menu: bulgogi (beef), rice, & banchan (Korean side dishes) It was so good, I could’ve cried.

The next activity on our schedule was a campus tour. This was our chance to get a feel for what Ewha’s campus was like and learn more about the historical significance of the university. So you may have noticed that the school is called Ewha Womans University. Is that a grammatical error you wonder? It is not. The spelling was chosen with purpose. While the university of course wants to encourage women as a group to innovate and take on the world, it’s a reminder that the mission has always been to help each individual woman to achieve her goals and reach her fullest potential.

Ewha was originally founded by Christian missionaries from the United States and still continues to teach it’s students the same original three cardinal virtues: truth, goodness, and beauty. Students are also required to take a chapel class, that isn’t necessarily a catechism class (everyone is free to practice & study whatever doctrine they please), but merely a chance for students to learn more about how they can apply the three cardinal virtues to themselves and the work they’re doing. It was so moving to learn about Ewha’s origins. The school started with the tenacity of 1 teacher and 1 student, and to see it’s growth to it’s size today is impressive and awe-inspiring. Female leaders who will lead us to a better tomorrow are being educated within their hallowed halls, including one of our instructors, Ewha alum Dr. Michin Hong.

We also had the awesome opportunity to attend a lecture by Professor Sophia (can’t remember her last name oopsies) who leads an english-taught social welfare course. Today’s topic was about the effects of an aging population on a society. We learned that as the world population continues to grow, and with people now living longer pretty much everywhere, our elderly population is also booming and with that will eventually outnumber their younger counterparts in the near future. What this means is that the need for elder care is going to increase as well, and as our society stands now, we may be ill-equipped to meet that demand because there is simply not enough younger people who are willing to take on these care positions. 

After the lecture portion, we were broken down further into groups to discuss what stigmas exist against older adults. Our group talked a lot about how there are many different perceptions that exist. Some people think of the elderly as grumpy, “out of touch”, and anti-progressive. Others think of them as wise and as key-players in leading the young. We found that it really depended on the individual and in what context you interacted with them. I brought up Erikson’s Stages of Development in our discussion. Now that I think back to it, I’m not sure I explained it in the best way, because I couldn't remember some of the specific verbiage off the top of my head. But I do believe I was able to give them a good general idea of how to interpret it. Essentially, at each stage of life, every person faces a specific psychosocial dilemma. And depending on what they’ve been able to accomplish developmentally until that point determines what stage they're in. For older adults, 55-65+, they either have “integrity” or “despair”. The adult has achieved “integrity” if they feel contentment having led a full  & meaningful life, perhaps leaving a lasting and important effect on the world they will eventually leave behind. For those who may harbor regrets in their life’s directions or the decisions they have made, “despair” is more evident. I thought this could potentially explain why there is such a dichotomy in the perception of our elderly counterparts. It was overall a very stimulation discussion and I enjoyed getting to know a small group of Ewha students. One cool thing about this class was there a lot of international students, from all over the world. There was a girl from the states and another from the Ukraine in my group. This added to the diversity of perspectives in our conversation, which I really enjoyed. 

Overall, it was a really long first day, but a strong & impactful start. I cannot say enough how enthused I am to have already learned so much in such a short amount of time. But I still have a TON of stuff to share with you all!!

I will continue to post about all that we’ve been up to, but it’s going to come in more sporadic bursts than I had previously anticipated. So keep an eye out for more blurbs & pictures!

The Academic Staff Union of Universities will on Monday (today) meet with the leadership of the National Assembly as part of its battle against the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

A source in the nation’s parliament confided in one of our correspondents that the meeting would be held behind closed doors today (Monday).

 He said, “It has been confirmed that the ASUU leadership will meet the leadership of the National Assembly on Monday. The meeting will centre on the ongoing face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government over the IPPIS saga.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, had during the 2020 budget presentation at the National Assembly on October 8, ordered that all public sector workers must register for the IPPIS to save cost and fight corruption by blocking leakages in the Federal Government’s salary payment structure.

But ASUU had last week opposed the  President’s directive, saying the IPPIS negated the law on university autonomy.

The Accountant-General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, who faulted  ASUU, said the union’s position was an open endorsement of corruption.

Also, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had on Thursday said no government agency must resist the payment system.

The Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Ola Awoniyi, on Sunday confirmed ASUU’s meeting with the National Assembly leadership.

He said the meeting would hold at 11am in his principal’s conference room.

Awoniyi in a WhatsApp message to one of our correspondents, wrote, “The Academic Staff Union of Universities will meet His Excellency, the Senate President, on Monday at Meeting Room 301 by 11am.”

When contacted, the ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, also confirmed the meeting, but declined to provide details of demands the union would table before the Senate President.

“The most important thing is that we are meeting tomorrow (Monday). We want to discuss the Nigerian education generally. All issues (including the IPPIS) will be touched. I think that is enough,” the ASUU president noted.

But the South-West branch of the union on Sunday reiterated its opposition to the Federal Government’s move to enrol university lecturers in the IPPIS.

The ASUU leaders from the South-West during a press conference held at the University of Ibadan, described the IPPIS as “a one-size-fits-all approach tainted with corrupt tendencies.”

The ASUU position was made known by the Coordinator of the South-West, Prof. Ade Adejumo, who led the Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter, Prof Deji Omole, and its Investment Secretary, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, to address journalists at the ASUU Secretariat on the UI campus.

Adejumo was asked what would be the reaction of the union to the Federal Government’s statement that anyone who failed  to register  for the  IPPIS by  October 31  would not be paid, he said, “ASUU’s  position has always remained no pay, no work.”

Adejumo berated the Accountant-General of the Federation for alleging that ASUU was encouraging corruption by its opposition to  the IPPIS.

He said the IPPIS was rather capable of encouraging corruption, more so that its civil service nature negated the legal administration of universities.

Adejumo said, “Sequel to this fact of the peculiar nature of universities from the civil service, Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government, government had agreed to the autonomy of public universities in Nigeria and had signed into law the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act in 2003.

“The IPPIS clearly violates the law. The Universities Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act 2003, provides in Section 2AA unequivocally, as follows: ‘the power of the council shall be exercised, as in the laws and statutes of each university and to that extent, establishment circulars that are inconsistent with the laws and statutes of the university shall not apply to the universities.

“Inter alia, the 1992 Act establishing, for example, the Federal Universities of Agriculture Section 8 (1 and 4) provides; ‘Subject to the provisions of this Act relating to the visitor, the council shall be the governing body of each university and shall be charged with the general control and superintendence of the policy, finance and property of the university. The council shall ensure that proper accounts of the university are kept and that the accounts of the university are audited annually by an independent firm of auditors approved by the council.’

“Our union has no reason to believe that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will flagrantly act against the law, which he vowed to uphold in his oath of office.”

While declaring that ASUU had aversion for corruption,  Adejumo asked the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to name Nigeria’s  corrupt public officials it recovered about N273bn from.

“Who were the culprits that have been sanctioned for such infractions?” he asked.

On the retirement schedule of academics which is 70 years for professors, the union stated that the IPPIS only recognised 60 years of age.

He stated, “The IPPIS is too rigid a platform that it discountenances the peculiarities of the university system in the sacred areas of replacement or recruitment of academics, mobility of academic staff for visiting, adjunct, part-time and sabbatical offers.

“Not only these, academics are chopped off the platform at the age of 60 thereby creating bottlenecks in the collection of salaries and emoluments because once the name of a worker is removed, such a victim will continue to frequent Abuja until it is rectified. The victim not only abandons his duty post, but faces the hazards on the Nigerian roads. The platform also does not capture the earned academic allowances and remunerations due to academics who retire before the age of 65.”

Adejumo also berated the Federal Government for failing to implement the 2009 agreement, stressing that the government had not released its report on the presidential audit visitation panel to universities.

He said vice-chancellors had been turned to “errand boys” of some assistant directors who summoned them to Abuja at will through text messages.

He said, “Our members are poised to pursue another patriotic struggle that will assert sanity in the university system and in the country at large. The tools of the struggle are now being primed and oiled, the union will have no blame when they begin to grind.”

IPPIS: Our fears – Gombe State varsity lecturers

Also,  the Chairman of ASUU at the Gombe State University, Dr Oladimeji Lawal, in an interview with The PUNCH, said the IPPIS would duplicate the functions of universities’ governing councils.

He said the IPPIS model was developed in such a manner that anyone above 60 years of age would not receive salary.

He also said ASUU had a better alternative.

Lawal stated, “So, if you are brought into this net, automatically if you are 61, 62 years, you will not get paid because the system was programmed not to recognise any worker who is more than 60 years.

“Universities around the globe are created as ivory towers. This explains the autonomous status of institutions; their freedom, ability to operate in a manner in which universities operate elsewhere. The power to recruit staff, pay as and when necessary, to expand without being subjected to bureaucratic control which is typical of the civil service. Government seems to approach universities as one of its departments and agencies. We have a better model than the IPPIS.”

Lawal added that it was not true that the IPPIS would ensure accountability and transparency.

He wondered why federal and state governments had failed to constitute visitation panels in the  public institutions.

He stated, “The fact that we say universities have autonomy does not mean that fraudulent activities can’t be prosecuted. In as much as the governing council has the right to supervise the running of these universities, the visitor has the authority from time to time to constitute a visitation panel, to overhaul whatever that must have happened in five years with a view to establishing whether things were rightly or wrongly done.”

UNILORIN VC knocks ASUU

But the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman  Abdulkareem, knocked ASUU for rejecting the IPPIS.

The vice-chancellor,  during a press conference in the university, supported the Federal Government on the IPPIS.

Abdulkareem said, “ASUU’s logic is not clear to me. I wonder why ASUU is taking a different position after attending a meeting with the representatives of all the five unions in the nation’s university system with the representatives of the Federal Government where they were adequately briefed on the new policy.

“I want to appeal to members of ASUU not to delay the October salary of the staff of federal universities with their action because the new system will not change their salaries. It is only the nomenclature that is changing.”

He explained that with the IPPIS, the Federal Government would maintain the payment of its employees’ salaries without cheating them.

The vice-chancellor stated,   “What probably is the fear of many of the academic members of staff  is that the system would expose them for not working for the money they earn in their primary place of engagement.”

We are in agreement with FG–OAU management

Although the Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Osun State, Prof  Eyitope  Ogunbodede,  was not available for comment, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, said from the available records, only ASUU among other unions in the university was opposed to the IPPIS.

Olanrewaju, who reacting on behalf of the authorities of the institution, said as far as the management was concerned, it was in agreement with the Federal Government on the issue.

Olanrewaju said, “We have different unions on the university and the only union that the Federal Government says is not cooperating is ASUU.

“So, I would have expected  reactions from ASUU. It is purely a union matter and has nothing to do with the university. On the matter, we are in agreement with the Federal Government.”

ASUU faction takes stand today

However, a breakaway faction of ASUU, the Congress of University Academics, will make its position on the IPPIS known on Monday (today).

The National Legal Adviser of the union, Ayodeji Ige, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said, “The decision will be taken tomorrow (today). A decision will be taken tomorrow and we will make it known to the media. The appropriate organs will address the press conference.”
