First off, John is one to not realize his feelings for you until a certain point. He's oblivious to his OWN feelings. That's how long he's liked you. Perhaps you were captured by one of the local gangs or got severely hurt... his heart dropped when he found out. John is a real overthinker... so obviously his mind went right to the worst case scenarios. Though, when Arthur got back to camp with you in tow, he was so damn grateful.
He's taught you to ride a horse, but absolutely flushes when you clutch onto his waist tighter than usual when he picks up speed on the back of his.
His morning voice is almost too sexy to reply to the g'morning he sends your way as he huddles over the campfire, coffee in hand.
John doesn't understand why out of all the more honorable men in the world, you chose him to love and care for with your whole heart.
He's the first to initiate hand holding, especially in public– oh my god. Maybe there's a random man in the bar looking your way... and John, well he just couldn't take someone thinking you were up for grabs. You feel his grip around your hand as his fingers intertwine with yours, the glare he held as cold as ice watching the man turn away from you.
John is reallyyyyyy fucking good at five finger fillet. You're surprised he's not lost all his fingers with the way he moves his knife so swiftly. It's one of the things that made you realize your feelings towards him.
John started crushing on you after you stitched up his face in Colter. Checking his scars every day to make sure they weren't getting infected; the close proximity was just another factor that made his heart race around you.
He becomes comfortable with touch as he falls for you. At first it's just a touch on the arm that has sparks flying, then you're touching his shoulder or back– his cheeks all but flush bright red every time. [Arthur teases him about it. It's adorable.]
John often takes you on rides outside of camp just to get some air from everyone. He really appreciates having alone time where the two of you can talk and bond and wink wink ;))
He also lets you wear his hat when the both of you go out riding together. John tries to get you your own but you think his suits you just fine.
When you tell him 'i love you' for the first time, it takes him a minute to register it. But when he does, he goes "say it again" and just kisses you before saying it back.
Calls you "Miss" around camp, but in private he prefers to call you honey and sweetheart. He feels like calling you your name is something to be kept private too. John Marston is a sucker for closeness with you.
Sometimes you catch him staring from across camp, and you tried so damn hard to hide your smirk from Sadie and the other girls... that you had to excuse yourself from the group.
He cannot be normal or stay still when your hands are on him. You're laying on his bedroll with him, lightly tracing your hands up and down his body and he's all but begging for you to keep going until you can't.
John can never have you close enough; being too close isn't a thing for him. If he could be glued to you, he would.
John would love to learn to cook together. He gets his kicks out of placing his hands on your waist while you're preparing the food, feeding him bits and pieces of veggies you're chopping up.
Tumblr media
NSFW
Here's the thing about John. He's suchh a touched starved boy that he absolutely cannot get enough of you from the time you get together. And obviously he's grabby too. Loves putting his hands everywhere on you. Like– everywhere. So much so that he leaves marks mostly every time he gets more than half an hour with you.
His love language is words of affirmation, so of course he basks in the glory when you say "you feel so good" or "right there" . Basically amps him up x10000.
Also John is a cocky little shit and mocks your cries in the bedroom. Then he'll go "Yeah? What ya screamin' my name for? Feels good huh?".
You don't know where he's learned it, but John has such a talented tongue– like, toe curling, back-arching, messy and desperate to please you without ever coming up for air.
John loses all ounce of shame in bed with you. He knows how to please you and if he's letting you be in control... he will beg and pleadddd for you. Like I said– no shame.
Loves when you pull his hair. The first time you did it he went "Atta girl..." with a groan– and you all but came right then and there from the gravel in his voice.
Is such a praiser;; gets off on hearing you whimper underneath him. Stuff like "doin' good for me, doll" and "such a mess for me, huh? look at you..." GOD.
That's another thing with John, he's always on top. Prefers missionary to observe the way you sing for him– and he's smitten all over again.
You're able to convince him to let you be on top– to ride him like the cowboy he is. He even puts his hat on you [mid ride might i say].
Is also a definite cuddler afterwards, he loves hearing your heartbeat steady while he’s pressed up against your back. He’ll suggest the two of you get cleaned up before you fall asleep.
Tumblr media
a/n: heyy so i know this is not a lot of hcs but they're the best i got for rn while i ponder on how to write my silly little drabbles :))) stay tuned for those heheh

Peaky characters with a SO who’s bubbly/cheerful
Tumblr media
🌕Tommy
🌕He’s honestly as surprised as everyone else that he fell in love with someone with such an opposite personality to his.
🌕Being with someone so happy and upbeat helped him forget about the war and reminds him of when times were simpler. As he would say, they help keep the shovels away.
🌕It would be a big shock at first for anyone that knows Tommy when he starts dating you, and his brothers have a moment where they genuinely wonder if Tommy is playing a joke. But no, it’s real and I think those early days would be the hardest for the two of you in the relationship. Just navigating all the confused reactions would really test Tommy and you both.
🌕But if the relationship lasted through that, it would be a solid one.
🌕Polly loves you, thinks that having someone so cheery is good for the man.
🌕The cheeriness doesn’t rub off on him, but he does loosen up a bit when you’re alone.
🌕Also, if anyone tries to make fun of you, he will shoot that shit down immediately. Will absolutely ride or die for the one he loves and would become murderous if someone made you sad.
🌹Alfie
🌹He absolutely loves how happy and carefree you are. That was what drew him to you initially.
🌹He’d been having a shit day, Ollie had fucked an important order up and his sciatica was acting up. He’d gone up to the actual bakery front of his distillery to check on things, and there you were. You’d greeted him with the most incredible smile and chirped a happy ‘Hello!’. He was a goner from that moment on.
🌹Would do anything for those sunshine smiles and will literally kill anyone who makes you sad.
🌹Some people get annoyed with bubbly personalities, they tend to not be able to keep up with the energy, but Alfie loves every moment of it.
🌹He also gets a kick out of seeing the jaw dropped expressions of other people when they meet you and they see this bright, cheerful person with him looming just behind.
⚡️Michael
⚡️Knew you before he’d become aquatinted with the Peaky Blinders and you were a person he’d not been able to let go of.
⚡️Becomes incredibly protective of you and refuses to let any one besides his mum meet you.
⚡️Obviously that’s not a long term solution and Tommy and gang do eventually meet you. Michael would puff up and try to crowd you to his side, and fierce glares would be sent over your head to warn off the Blinders.
⚡️He’d relax eventually, though, once he saw you getting along with Ada and John. He just doesn’t want you to become corrupted like he has.
⚡️Once he became more involved with Blinders business, he might push you away in an effort to protect you, but he’d never really be able to let you go. You’re his light.
💥Arthur
💥He really uses your personality to ground himself. Everything since the war has been chaotic and terrible and having someone who is just happy makes those storm clouds go away.
💥He loves taking you out on the town and showing you off. He takes you to all the newest clubs and fanciest restaurants; places he thinks that you can really stretch your wings.
💥If Tommy or John try to make fun of you, he’ll knock their teeth out. Ain’t no one talks to the person he loves like that.
💥Overall, a bubbly person is a good match for someone like Arthur. He tends to match energies of the people he’s with and if he’s with someone happy, he’ll be happy.
🌞John
🌞This man will either bring out the best of your personality or the worst, there’s no in-between.
🌞He’s a bit like a kid, has lots of goofy energy and likes to just let loose all the time. If he’s with a bubbly person, that person will also have to have some sense of responsibility too. Because if you don’t, you will just fuel each other’s energies until it’s a whole mess.
🌞You are a very expected person for John to date, it wouldn’t be very surprising. But, it might surprise people just how protective he can become of you at the drop of a hat.
🌞One of the lads at the pub made some snide comment about you and John had snapped. Cut a smile into that man’s face and threatened to kill him if he so much as a thought about you ever again.
🌞Tommy and Polly both genuinely fear what will happen if you two have children together. God help them if your kids have your personalities haha.

regressor!tilly jackson!!
Tumblr media
note; HIIIIIII- So I'm back again, but with a more underrated character! Tilly!!! She's sooooo underrated, I wished people talked about her more :( and I wish she had more content in the game, like she's so well-written oml- she's so young but so independent. And she loves her big family so much- I LOVE HERRRRR- anywayssss heres your foodddddd- (mwah mwah, she's so pretty)
headcanons;
Tilly is a big sister/middle regressor and her age range is 6 - 10
She's honestly one of the sweetest little's to be around, and everyone always says how adorable she is. And she's very helpful! Always toddling behind a caregiver and asking if they need help, or being with a younger regressor and helping do simple tasks for their caregiver, like make a bottle or play with their toys!
She adores Lenny and Charles the most, and Lenny is her (positive) influence if Arthur isn't. He's always so responsible around her, and their relationship is very big brother/younger sister vibes! He's always reading a book to her, she's always drawing with him
Even with all this positivity, she's still much very independent! Always totting about and always whining if she gets babied too much. Stomping her feet and being like "i'm a big girl! can do t'ings by mahself! don' need no stupid peoples 'round to look afta me! >:[" and just stomps off to the ladies to whine to them about all this. Although she loves all the attention, she doesn't like being babied, and she shows just how much of a big girl she is! (girlboss >:D)
Being around the gang from a very young age has gotten some influences out of her. Arthur and Mrs Grimshaw especially. Some of her more fisty, independent side comes from these two, mostly Mrs Grimshaw, if she had to pick one. But that doesn't mean she has her own thing going on too!
She looks up to Arthur a lot, mostly because he was there from the start of her joining the gang and such, and treats him like an older brother. John is a bit different, but still the same in some sense. She adores Arthur, honestly, and has always enjoyed his company, big or small. She even started to draw a bit like him too! But she's taken more to painting than actual drawing, but it doesn't mean she doesn't keep a sketchbook around!
She loves to do hair! Either it be the ladies or Charles, she's just wanting to style! She tries to keep true to what modern hair styles are in the 20th century and such, but also takes from her own independence too! Braids and buns and afros too! Or she just usually likes the silky feeling of hair/facial features LAMO
Being well-behaved doesn't mean she's cheeky. She loves to be a little troublemaker at times, but not enough to harm anyone. Taking Arthur's hat, stealing a few fresh baked cookies, scaring Dutch awake. Simple, but funny. You can blame Lenny for all of this, but he's worse on his own. Though not as bad as Sean or Micah
She loves to be on horses! Or just look after them in general. Going over to where the horses are kept at camp and stroking them, talking to them and feeding them sugar cubes she (probably stole from Arthur) got from somewhere. She has a sweet connection with horses, and always will have! And she loves going out on horseback rides with Uncle Arthur!

Note
can I get an order of headcanons with the VDL boys asking you to dance at one of the camp parties? thx
*ding ding* order up!
Arthur
The thought of asking you to dance certainly crossed Arthur's mind when Dutch first turned on his gramophone but he doubts himself. He watches you laugh the night away, overthinking it completely and debating whether it’s even a good idea.
It's Hosea's encouragement that gives Arthur that last bit of courage he needs, taking a deep breath as he walks over to you and finally asks if you'll dance with him.
Arthur tells you he's not that good at dancing but he still tries to impress you with his dance skills, spinning you every once in a while and dipping you too. He's nervous but Arthur loosens up after a while once he realizes you’re having fun. Honestly he’s relieved you're having a good time.
Arthur doesn't dance for long, preferring to keep it short and sweet. When you both pull away from one another, Arthur bows slightly and tips his hat to you as he thanks you for the dance. It might have been short but this is something Arthur will remember for a very long time, hoping it meant just as much to you too.
Charles
Charles isn’t sure if you’ll say yes but decides to ask you anyways, knowing it’s at least worth a shot. The camp has quietened down from the celebrations so he hopes this is the perfect time for a dance.
He can’t help but smile brightly when you accept, putting your hand in his as he guides you to an open area of camp.
Charles is a simple dancer, not bothered about showing off and instead preferring to keep you close so y'all can talk properly. He might twirl you every once in a while but Charles only does that if it'll make you smile (He really can't get enough of your smile).
His favourite part of the dance is when you fully relax into him, resting your head on his chest and slowly swaying to the music, not focusing on the actual dancing aspect anymore. Honestly, Charles could stay like this all night long.
Dutch
The o n l y reason Dutch decides to put on some music was so he could ask you to dance. Seriously, he’s been planning this all evening. He gives you a quick, sly glance as he walks over to his gramophone, putting on a record before he makes his way over to you.
Dutch knows what he's doing when it comes to dancing but he likes to keep things simple and sway with you to the music, only trying to impress you with a twirl only once or twice.
His main goal isn't to impress you with his dancing, instead Dutch sees this as some time to talk without being interrupted by any of the gang.
Dutch has a way of making this seem so private and intimate even though y'all are dancing as the gang celebrates around ye. Everyone's there and yet it's like only you and Dutch are in this moment, smiling at one another as he begins to compliment you.
Micah
Micah doesn't have great timing so unlike the others, Micah only thinks about asking you to dance after Dutch has turned off his gramophone. He does it at the very end of the night, when he's finally plucked up the courage and probably downed another bottle of beer.
He tries to be charming with his words, picking up a few phrases from Dutch and hoping that'll make you swoon all over him. When you agree, you take Micah by surprise. He really didn't think he'd get this far.
He's so goddamn stiff while dancing and in a strange way, it's actually kinda impressive that Micah doesn't have a single piece of rhythm. Afterwards, he doesn't mention the dance again. This is one of the very rare things Micah did that he doesn't want to try and use against you or tease you about later.
Micah doesn't mention the dance half out of embarrassment that he actually attempted to dance but also because he wants to keep it as a small but special moment between you both.
John
Don't get me wrong, John would love to be able to serenade you or recite a poem about love before asking you to dance but he doesn't have that class. He just kinda looks to you and shrugs asking if you wanna dance.
Although it sounds like this isn't a big deal to John, it really is. He isn't a dancer but he wants to dance just to spend some time with you. You mean a lot to him and he wants to make you happy.
Let's be real, there's a very high chance John accidentally steps on your foot. He apologises instantly, becoming more stiff and giving you a sympathetic smile.
When John's sober he isn't a good dancer but if he's had a few beers and you're in a secluded part of camp with just the two of you then John is more willing to mess around and make a fool of himself trying to dance.
Javier
Javier spontaneously asks you to dance. He's sitting beside you at one of the tables, watching Dutch and Molly dance when Javier decides he should ask you.
Javier stands, holding out his hand to you with a warm smile. I mean, technically he doesn't ask you to dance but you get what he means and honestly, you and Javier are so close sometimes you don't have to talk to communicate.
He holds you close as you both sway to the music. Javier makes some casual conversation with you, complimenting your dance skills and asking if you'll help him improve his.
Usually Javier is the one creating the music the others dance to so his moves are a little rusty, but spending the rest of the night learning how to dance properly with you sounds absolutely blissful to him.
Bill
Bill doesn't like to dance. If he's being completely truthful, he doesn't know how on earth to dance. But if asking you means you might spend some more time with him, then he’ll muster up as much courage as possible and ask you to dance with him.
Bill feels like he's floating on air once you agree, though it quickly becomes pretty obvious that Bill has no idea what rhythm is or how he's supposed to move his feet to the music.
He gets flustered when you ask Bill if he knows how to dance, presuming he has completely fucked this up but then you begin to give him instructions and help him with his dance moves.
Bill feels his face become warm as you both start to dance properly. He’s baffled by your kindness and how you’d prefer to help him learn than make fun of him but he’s so goddamn grateful, knowing this is something he’ll remember for years to come.
Sean
Sean wants to act like he's being casual and that he doesn't care too much when he asks you to dance. But I’m reality, he's trying so hard to keep his voice level and to seem cool in front of you.
It's only when he has one hand intertwined with yours and the other on your waist does Sean realise he has no idea how to slow dance. He hesitates slightly but tries to make a quick recovery by awkwardly shuffling from side to side in the hopes that's good enough to be classed as dancing.
Now if Dutch had some upbeat music then Sean would be able to dance the night away, impressing you with his many, many jigs. But slow dancing? This isn't Sean's forte.
He really has no idea what he's doing but it is strangely endearing. Thinking it'd be funny, when Sean goes to dip you, he pretends to drop you as a joke but accidentally loses grip and actually drops you. He spends the rest of the night apologising and tending to your non existent injuries.
Hosea
Hosea? Nervous? Pfffffffftt never, he's not nervous, he's just waiting for the right moment, that's all. He's asked many people to dance in his lifetime... Sure, most of them were to distract people or sneakily pickpocket a fancy watch or bracelet but for some reason it's difficult to ask you to dance.
He keeps walking up near you but then Hosea feels his heart start to beat faster and he decides to wait longer before asking. Hosea doesn't understand why this is so hard for him to do, it's so simple and yet it's so hard to get the words out.
It's the end of the night by the time he asks you, everyone beginning to get tired and the party winding down. Swallowing a lump in his throat, Hosea asks you and much to his relief, you say yes.
Since the atmosphere is much more relaxed than earlier in the night, the dance is more like swaying gently to the music. Hosea's glad you're both dancing like this, everything feeling much more intimate and genuine as you both talk softly to once another, eyes closed peacefully and truly savouring the moment.
Trelawny
Dutch has barely put the record on his gramophone when Trelawny promptly walks over to you and holds out his hand, asking if you'd like to dance with him.
You already know Trelawny is going to put his all into this, trying his very best to impress you with his skilled dance moves. He dips you as long as he can, spins you as fast as he can and flourishes as much as humanly possible.
Afterwards, Josiah kisses the back of your hand but he notices there’s something behind your ear. C’mon now this is Trelawny and he really wants to make you smile so of course he magically finds a beautiful rose hiding behind your ear.
Handing you the rose, Trelawny thanks you for being such an immaculate dance partner, mentioning how good of a team you both are and that he's always ready for another dance.
Kieran
Kieran's been praying to whatever higher power there is that you'll wander out by the outskirts of camp. There's no way he'll ask you to dance in the middle of camp, too nervous to ask when he’s sober and scared he might puke on you if he asks you when he’s drunk.
Besides, Kieran doesn’t want the rest of the gang breathing down your necks while dancing or teasing him if you reject his dance proposal. Kieran prefers asking by the outskirts of camp, hoping it’ll be special with just the two of you there.
Kieran tries to be as courteous as possible when he asks, timidly holding out his hand to you. When you say yes, Kieran lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, feeling as though the weight of the world has just been lifted off of his shoulders.
Kieran hasn’t danced much in his life but he wants to do good so he really focuses on the steps. It’s cute how determined he is to get the steps right, not wanting to step on your feet or make any other mistakes. Even after the dance, Kieran’s still in disbelief you said yes but he's quick to accept another dance from you if you're up for it.
Lenny
Lenny has been hyping himself up all evening. As soon as Lenny noticed Dutch was in a jolly mood, laughing and telling stories about the early years of the gang, he knew it was only a matter of time before he turned on his gramophone.
Lenny repeated the words a dozen times in his heads, wondering how he should ask you to dance and if it would be better if he said it casually or more formal.
He waits for the right moment once Dutch turns on his gramophone. Lenny really overthinks all of this, analysing if asking you too soon seems eager and if that might be a turn off for you or if dancing is something you’d even enjoy. Pushing all of his doubts out of his head, Lenny seizes the moment and asks you the question.
Although Lenny doesn't know any fancy moves, he knows the basics of dancing. Once he relaxes, Lenny doesn't take the dance too seriously. He just wants to make you laugh and have a good time and even asks if you think you can dip him towards the end of the dance.

The Broken Crown- Chapter 2
Summary: All Margaret Shelby ever wanted, was the opportunity to write her own story. Only now is she beginning to realize that her brother may have already written it for her...
Hello! Enjoy chapter 2!
OoOoOo
"Keep spendin' most our lives, Livin' in the gangsta's paradise,
Tell me why are we so blind to see,
That the ones we hurt, are you and me"
~Gangsters Paradise~
1919
"Mags." Was the first thing the young girl heard as she was gently shaken awake, "Go lay in your bed, eh?"
Upon half-opening her eyes, she saw it was Tommy who had been talking to her. Maggie only then realized she had fallen asleep sitting upright. She responded by rubbing her neck and slowly nodding. Clumsily she got off the bed with her journal in hand.
It was early. The exact time she wasn't sure, but sunlight wasn't streaming through the window yet. She entered the quiet hallway, navigating herself to her bedroom in the darkness. When she opened her door, she discovered a figure standing in the middle of the half-lit room changing clothes.
"There you are," Ada whispered out, shimming out of her slip, "Was wondering what happened to you."
"Slept in Tommy's room," She explained, yawning lightly. "Just get in? What time is it?"
Her sister nodded as she continued to change into a nightdress, slipping the fabric over her head. "It's just past four." She informed as the younger girl motioned her way around her sister to flop onto the bed, making it creak from the force of body weight.
"How was your night?" asked Maggie, moving to make her head more comfortable on the old shapeless pillow.
"Romantic." The older girl hummed, sliding into bed next to her sister. "I've never felt this way about anyone."
Maggie turned her body on her side. "Wish I could put a name and face to this mystery man." She watched her sister's eyes flash with guilt. At the realization of her thoughts were now said aloud, regret formed in the pit of Maggie’s stomach.
"I promise I'll tell you sooner than you think, I just-" Ada didn't have to finish the sentence for Maggie to understand what she was going to say: 'I just can't deal with our brothers if they find out '.
"I know Ada," was the last thing the sleepy girl said before closing her eyes and drifting back to sleep.
Eventually, she woke up again around seven in the morning. Carefully, she got out of bed trying not to wake up her sleeping sister, and dressed accordingly in one of Ada's old dresses. She also made sure to pack her journal into her book bag before making her way downstairs. Once in the kitchen, she saw Tommy reading the paper and Finn eating his breakfast.
"Morning." She said, grabbing a bowl and spoon to scoop mushy porridge out of a metal pot, which was sitting on top of the only working stove burner. Polly had most likely prepared it for them. "How did you sleep?"
Tommy knew that question was directed to him, "Better than I have in weeks." This made his sister smile as she sat down in the chair next to him. "Your writing has improved. But then again, I haven't heard you share your work since you were twelve. Pol says you won't even share with her or Ada. Why's that?" He was genuinely curious.
"I don't think it's ready to be shared yet," Maggie shrugged.
He peered at her as he set the paper down onto the table, "You shared last night."
"Only to put you to sleep." She countered, bringing the spoon to her mouth to consume the beige-colored substance.
"Going to have to sometime," he spoke sincerely. "How else are you going to become a writer, eh?"
He was right, she knew that, but right now, her writing felt sacred. As if her words were only meant for her. She was still coming face to face with a paradoxical problem. Every time she would write something down, it would instantly not be good enough. The pages of her journal seemed to have more scribbled-out lines than actual words. She just couldn't explain this feeling properly, and if she couldn't express her feelings in words, how could she write? No, sharing her words would only lead to not being understood. Her thoughts were soon interrupted by the opening and slamming of the front door.
"Tommy!" John angrily stormed into the kitchen, "It's Danny! Those fucking Wops got a hit on him."
Tommy answered back by pushing himself out of his chair and hurriedly following his brother out of the home. Finn quickly tried to follow, but Maggie grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, "Let go Mags!" he cried out.
Maggie sighed, "C'mon, let's get you ready for school." Finn could only respond with a groan, allowing his sister to lead him upstairs.
OoOoOo
The next day, a smiling Maggie was squished between John and Finn in the family car. She could barely move without hearing a complaint from John, but she didn't care, she was too excited. They were all on their way to the fair, which had been set up right outside of Birmingham. It had been so long since she had been to one. They were almost there, and she could see the big red and white striped tent peaking over the trees in the distance, so she was confused when Tommy parked the car in a clearing that was still a good distance away.
Arthur spoke up at once, "Thought you said we were going to the fair"
"Yeah, what are we doing?" She asked nervously, leaning her elbows against the front seat.
"We have business first. C'mon, bring your wits." Tommy said getting out of the car with John and Arthur following. He glanced over to his younger siblings noticing they were trying to do the same. " You and Finn stay by the car."
"Seriously?" She just wanted to have a normal day at the fair with her family. Was that too much to ask?
Tommy pointed at her to emphasize. "Stay by the car, Mags."
"What business?" Arthur questioned.
"That's the Lee family," She heard John say.
Great the Lees, thought Maggie sarcastically, as she sank into the seat. Though she did perk herself up when she saw a familiar face walking towards the car.
"Hi, Johnny!" She smiled and waved at the man.
"Well hello pretty lady," Johnny Dogs greeted as he approached the car. "Tell me, have you seen a lass named Maggie?" The teasing tone of his voice was prominent. He had not changed a bit in the four years his presence had been absent.
The girl giggled slightly at his antics, and with a playful air replied, "I'm Maggie."
"You canna be her." He overly acted out in disbelief, "Last time I saw her she was but a child!"
"Hang on a minute," They all heard Arthur say, "You're not swapping the family car for a bloody horse!"
Johnny turned around and quickly walked up to the oldest Shelby, "Of course we're not swapping it. Huh? That would be mad!"
"We're going to play two up," Tommy explained, handing a coin over to the family friend.
"Jesus." Arthur breathed out anxiously, as they all watched the pair toss their coins into the grass and lean forward to get a better view. Silently, Tommy handed over the keys to the car, much to the irritation of the eldest, "I knew it. Tommy, you bloody idiot!"
"Shut up Arthur. I won," Tommy told him, "I promised Johnny I'd let him have a spin in the car if he lost." He watched as the relief washed over his brother's face but was interrupted by collective snickering. He turned to the three men dangerously, "Are you Lee boys laughing at my brother? Are you? Eh? I asked you a question!"
"Tommy! Tommy, c'mon it's just a craic." Johnny reasoned, trying to keep everyone calm, "Get your family out of here and go enjoy yourselves at the fair before they start a war." Johnny then turned to the Lees, and Maggie was able to make out most of what he said. It had something to do about the grandfather she never met before one of the Lees replied, "Yeah, but his mother was a Diddicoy whore."
That had done it. Whipping his weaponized hat off of his head, Tommy slashed at the man's face. Arthur and John quickly joined in. Blood could be seen gushing from their faces as they all yelled obscenities at one another. Finn looked in awe at his brothers, his gaze never wavering from the fight, but Maggie felt sick.
OoOoOo
An hour later they had finally reached their original destination. Looking and walking around the fair was an amazing experience. The many rides, animals, oddities, and food all in one place were a wonderment to the many families that came out from all over the area. Yet, Maggie's level of enthusiasm was less than what Tommy had expected. She couldn't shut up most of the way there, now she was as silent as a stone.
"What's the matter with you, eh?" Tommy questioned as they walked around the fairgrounds together, "Did you want to take a spin on the big wheel ride?" He pointed up to the giant machine with carriages that slowly spun in circles.
She asked quietly, "Did you have to hurt them?" Sure, Maggie knew what her brothers did. She would be naive if she said she didn't, but she had never been a witness to it. The violence that she had often heard others speak of was now forever ingrained in her memory, becoming a standard for their future offenses. "The Lee's." She clarified although she was certain he knew what she was talking about.
"They were disrespecting us Mags," He explained as if she were younger than Finn. "You heard them."
Tommy had always tried to keep her in the dark about their business practices, which was easy when she was younger. Unlike Finn, she had always kept her nose in a book, never really paying attention to the transgressions of her siblings. But now she was beginning to notice and was starting to ask questions he'd rather not answer.
"You couldn't walk away?" Maggie inquired, looking towards anywhere but his face.
He remained silent for a moment before stiffly asking, "Do you want to get on the fucking wheel ride or not?" That was Tommy-ese for 'drop it', so she did, and added herself to the growing line. Tommy followed her lead, standing behind her he pulled a cigarette out to smoke as they waited.
Maggie was quiet the entire duration of the drive back home. The setting sun rays peeked through the gray smog as they entered Small Heath, they all noticed the place had been trashed. Broken and ripped furniture looked like they were just tossed in the streets and all those who watched the Shelby car roll slowly down the street managed to give them all a dirty look.
Arthur was the first to speak up, "Now, what the bloody hells been going on here?"
OoOoOo
Apparently, from what she gathered it had been the new copper that had been behind the trashing of their neighborhood. Maggie and Cara walked through the crowd, as they recounted the events of each other's day. Thankfully the Ryans dress shop had been spared from the destruction and Maggie told her friend everything about the fair, excluding the violent beginning of course. In front of them stood a pile of portraits that had been gathered from around all the homes and businesses of the community. Once they were lit on fire, familiar faces were lit up as well to contrast the darkness. They both soon saw Ross with a crowd of men, most likely coworkers from the BSA. Once he saw them, he waved them off and began moving toward the girls.
"Are you ever going to tell him?" Maggie asked her friend, as they watched the young man weaving his way through the crowd of people.
"I will!" Cara defended before adding, "Eventually." Maggie tried to hide her smile.
"All right ladies?" Ross greeted once he was near enough.
"So, what's all this about then?" Cara questioned somewhat flirtatiously, pointing at the heap of portraits.
"Ask Mags," Ross replied, sending the dark-haired girl a smirk, "It's her brothers that have organized all this, went 'round taking everyone's pictures."
"Oh right, because they run everything by me first." she joked, causing both her friends to chuckle. Cara soon took over in leading the conversation, but Maggie was only half paying attention. Curiously, she watched as Tommy spoke with a man that she had never seen before. He must have felt her gaze because he found her face in the crowd, causing Maggie to quickly divert her stare off her brother. Ross then pulled out a flask from a pocket inside his dark coat.
"Care for a swig?" He asked them, shaking the container slightly. Drinking alcohol was something she had never really made into a habit, for her it was only for special occasions. Without hesitation, Cara took the silver flask from his hand and drank a few gulps before passing it on to Maggie. Maggie glanced back to her brother, who was no longer watching her, but instead had gone back to his discussion with the man who was now writing something down on a pad of paper.
She grabbed the small open bottle in her hand and raised it to her friends, "Cheers." The liquid burned in her mouth, but she forced herself to swallow. She coughed at the sensation, making Cara laugh as she took the flask back in her hand, downing what was inside again. The small group of friends joked and drank for the next hour or so, as the flames of the bonfire created a comforting warmth over the burning expressionless eyes of his majesty the king.
OoOoOo
After drinking so much during the bonfire, Cara must not have been feeling too well because she didn't show up to school the next day. Not only that, but it also seemed as though Finn decided to skip again. So unfortunately for Maggie, she was fated to walk home alone. Slung over her shoulder was her book bag which carried a few books, pens, and her journal. As she walked past the first alleyway, she felt a presence quickly appear next to her.
"In need of some company?" Ross asked, tossing his finished cigarette onto the pavement.
"That would be nice." She smiled up at his tall frame, which had a good five inches on her.
He motioned to the bookbag that rested on her shoulder, "Let me help with that."
"I can carry it myself." She calmly asserted, which made the young man grin.
"Now how would it look to all these people around us if I didn't help you with that, Hm?" He waved his index finger around to point at various people going about their day, "Word will get back to my mum, and she'd beat me for not being the gallant gentleman she raised. And you'd be responsible for that. I'm only trying to save you from a guilty conscience later on."
She supposed she shouldn't let that happen. With a small smile, she passed the bag to him which he took gladly.
"Last night was fun, eh?" He continued, slinging her bag over his shoulder.
"It was," she replied, allowing her mind to wander through the fresh memories. "Though I think Cara had too much fun."
"Sounds like her," he snickered out, "Never scared of fun."
"What else do you think about her?" The dark-haired girl pressed.
"Who, Cara?" He asked and Maggie nodded. "I dunno." He shrugged, adding, "Nice I suppose."
"Oh c'mon, you have to see the way she looks at you" Maggie alluded.
"Never noticed." He admitted, looking uncomfortable.
She knew she couldn't push the matter any further than that. It was time to change the subject, "How's work?"
"Factory is on strike again." He answered her, appearing more relaxed, "Freddie thinks we should be compensated more. Guess we'd need that in order to make up for the wages we've lost."
She couldn't stop herself from rolling her eyes. Of course, Freddy had something to do with this. Though she always admired her brothers' old friend for sticking to his beliefs, she silently judged anyone whose beliefs ranged on the spectrum of radical. "Freddie needs to be more careful. As do you, he's going to get everyone in some serious trouble."
He smiled at her worried words, "He'll be fine. I heard from other workers that he skipped town after the raid. As for me, I think that a bit of trouble is the only way to get what you want."
They had just turned onto Watery Lane, their pace began to slow until they eventually stopped just across the street from the front door of her home. "You didn't have to walk me all the way home, you know," she told him as he handed her book bag back.
His hazel eyes meet her blue ones, "I'd do anything for you, Margaret," he declared seriously. She couldn't help but think that there was a hidden meaning in his words. Was she reading too much into this? He must have meant that as her friend, right?
"I-," she started.
"Maggie!" Tommy's voice rang out.
Maggie turned her head to see her brother as he made his way toward them. The girl's heart clenched at the thought of what he was going to do. Her mind had quickly jumped back to the memory of yesterday, the slashing, the anger, the blood. She glanced over to Ross, whose expression went from nervous to stoic in a matter of seconds.
"Go inside," Tommy instructed once he stood close enough to the two teens.
"But-"
"Now Mags," he commanded with a low voice. Coolly, Tommy took a drag from his cigarette that was resting in between his fingers, not taking his eyes off Ross.
With a huff and a final look towards her friend, Maggie bid him farewell before swiftly walking toward the front door of her family home. Once the dark-haired girl was out of earshot Ross apprehensively spoke, "Mr. Shelby I- I was just walking her home, I wasn't trying to-"
"I know Ross," Tommy assured the anxious young man, tossing his finished cigarette to the ground. Pol had told him that the young Murray lad had helped look after his sister while he and his brothers were away in France. Had even heard a rumor amongst some of the younger men in the betting shop that he knocked the shit out of another boy who was sniffing around Margaret. If that was true, Tommy felt indebted. He was a busy man, so he cut to the chase, "You beat a bloke that was giving Maggie trouble?"
Ross modestly nodded at his question. "You're a good lad." The gangster commended, passing the young man one of his cigarettes from its silver metal casing. He also lit a match to assist him with lighting it. "Is your Uncle Ian still living in Dublin?"
Ross had to admit, he wasn't expecting the line of questioning to head in this direction. Nevertheless, he nodded once again, removing the rolled tobacco from his lips to allow a puff of smoke to escape from his lungs. The young man's confusion ceased when he watched Tommy pull out two pounds sterling from his pocket. Ross’s eyes couldn't help but widen at the act.
"Good, I want you to do me a favor. Call him and tell him to ask around all the local pubs in town if they know anything about a barmaid named Grace Burgess." As much as Tommy wanted to say he didn't care about this new woman who had found herself working at The Garrison, he needed to know exactly where she came from and if she was telling the truth. Digging out another pound he said, "Here send this to your uncle too."
"I will Mr. Shelby," he assured, accepting the coins in his outreached hand.
Tommy turned away and began walking toward his home, without looking back he added, "Welcome to the Peaky Blinders, Ross."
OoOoOo
When Maggie entered her home, she found Polly sitting in the kitchen reading a newspaper and drinking tea. "Hello, love. How was school?"
"Fine." She replied curtly, dropping her book bag onto the floor beside the table. She immediately moved to the window, looking out just in time to see Tommy lighting a cigarette for Ross. Relief washed over Maggie, this conversation thankfully seemed as though it wouldn't involve fists... or razor blades.
Polly's eyes were now on her, "What are you looking at?"
"Nothing." Maggie tore herself away from the window to sit down opposite her aunt, pulling out her journal and pen from the book bag next to her feet. Tommy ended up entering the kitchen not two minutes later.
"I hope you didn't tell my friend that you'd hurt him." Maggie told her brother much more boldly than she felt, "He was just being kind."
He stared at her for a moment before replying knowingly, "Now why would I hurt my newest recruit." With that, he exited into the betting shop closing the doors behind him. She gapped, still looking at the shut doors trying to process how Tommy could ever involve her friend in whatever schemes he was engaging in.
Her emotions must have shown all over her face because her aunt chuckled slightly. "I wouldn't worry too much about your friend," Polly told her eyes still on the black and white paper. But Maggie couldn't stop herself from slumping into the old wooden chair before she continued writing, ultimately stopping when she felt her sister's presence enter the room.
"Good of you to join us," Polly said to Ada from behind her newspaper. "Where have you been all day?
"In bed," Ada replied. "Couldn't sleep, then I couldn't wake up, then I was cold, and then I had to go for a wee. Then I was with this bear on a boat, but that was just a dream, then I was hungry." Maggie looked up from her journal once again to see that Ada took the empty seat between her and their aunt with a massive slice of bread with a jar of jam in hand.
Maggie looked pointedly at the last of the bread that she had made recently, "Jesus Ada, save some food for the rest of us."
Ada stuck her tongue out, before looking at her aunt, "Why are you reading the paper?" Ada inquired.
"Why wouldn't I be?" Polly questioned back, picking up her teacup.
"I've never seen you read the paper. I've only ever seen you light fires with them." The older Shelby sister continued, taking a bite of her food.
"BSA is on strike" Polly explained, "The miners are on strike. IRA are killing our boys, ten a day." Though when Polly stopped talking, she continued to stare at Ada eating.
The older girl soon noticed her aunt's gaze. "What?" She asked in between her chewing.
"Stand up," Polly commanded.
"Why?" Ada questioned.
"Just stand up," Polly ordered standing up herself, eventually Ada compiled, "Side on," Polly added and Ada motioned her body to face to the side. Maggie was taken aback when Polly suddenly cupped one of her sisters' breasts.
Though Ada was much more reactionary, "What are you doing?!"
"Ada, how late are you?" Polly asked seriously and Maggie couldn't stop her mouth as it fell open slightly.
"One week." Not too bad, Maggie thought. "Five weeks," Ada amended. It wasn't ideal, but maybe she was due any day now. "Seven, if you count weekends." The girl corrected herself once again.
"Holy Fuck, "Maggie shook her head in disbelief.
Ada seemed desperate for this not to be the reality, "I think it's a lack of iron. I got some tablets." She explained to them, as Polly sat back down in her chair.
"But they didn't work." Their aunt concluded.
Ada too sat back down, "No."
Maggie gulped at her sister's answer and looked to her aunt, watching Polly as she took a deep breath. The thought process could not be seen on her face, but the young girls knew that the situation was being meticulously addressed in her mind. "Get dressed. We're going to the midwife. Let's just make sure you are before anyone makes any rash decisions."
Ada nodded, holding back the tears that threatened to spill over. Maggie's heart clenched, and moved her hand over her sisters, squeezing it slightly. Whatever was to come, they would weather through it together.

Saved by the Devil (13/?) - Thomas Shelby
Summary: Its time for Epsom, what could go wrong? (Sorry about my summaries they are terrible)
Paring: Tommy Shelby x Fem!reader (romantic)
Warning: S*xual Assault  There is a  scene where the reader is put in uncomfortable position with the general. Reader takes the place of Lizzie in luring the General. And stuff does go down but i was not graphic in writing it cause i was a bit uncomfortable writing anything beyond what i did write and i didn't want to trigger anyone. When the scene does come up i will put a another warning to let you know.
A/N: Hello, this chapter was so so so fun to write. I am so excited for all of you to read and hopefully tell me what you think cause i think this just might be one of my favorite chapters so far... Have a lovely night and see you soon :)
It was time. And for the first moment in your life you were beyond scared. It didn’t show as you got into the back seat the Shelby boys, Arthur and John, in front. No sign of Thomas Shelby anywhere.
“Boys, its good to see you.” You say genuinely. You hadn’t seen them since the last little mission at the horse auction. This time though will be different, you had a lovely knife strapped to your thigh. All your injuries healed and you were beyond prepared for this. You liked the brothers, though you didn’t know them too well. They seemed to take kindly to you too as they nodded at your statement and asked how you were.
The ride felt short. Though it had to have been longer since you were far from London. You didn’t even know what you were thinking about the entire time. You knew that Thomas was waiting for the three of you and more. You weren’t sure if you were ready to face him. The other night when you guys had almost-
You shake your head of the memory. Remembering that you were just a second choice in all this. Grace had rejected him. Then he called you and like a dog you came running. You didn’t know what was wrong with you. But never again would that happen. He didn’t want you and neither did you. And after all this was done, you would never have to see each other again.
You already had word with Trinity, you were leaving tomorrow. Everything was planned and ready to go. Thomas never told you about a new passport or id, you had requested. But you couldn’t wait for him. The nightmares were getting worse and you swore that when you talked on the phone the past week, you could hear breathing on the other line. There was no time to waste, it was time to go.
The two brothers and you head up to the front of the Epsom gates, there you see Tommy Shelby and the rest of the gang. His aunt Polly in attendance eyeing you up and down but no saying a word. Her stare this time not making you nervous, instead you see it filled with curiosity.
“Alright everyone’s, here,” Thomas says not making eye contact with you as he claps his hands together, “here’s the agenda.”
And he takes everyone down to the plan, leaving out of course the part of the assassination of the general. All he says is that he will provide a distraction for everyone in order to take Sabini racetrack licenses. No one asks questions as he finishes the meeting. Everyone scatters to different parts as they enter the races.
“(Y/n)” you hear your name fall out of his mouth. You look at each other and theres a pause. There’s million things unsaid at this moment that you both want to say. But don’t.
“Keep an eye out.” He finally says moving past you, disappearing in the crowd.
And that’s what you do. You keep an eye out. You thought you might have more significance on this day but maybe not. Maybe this is all you get to do. You remember back then when you had worked for your father. The man had always let you in on the action, no matter how dangerous. You didn’t care either because that was life, it was normal for you. Your mother, rest her soul, was the only one who had ever fought for you to stay home, go to school, date and live normal. But she never got her way.
You watched some of the peaky blinder, the ones that you could pin point walk around the arena. They all were tailing some of Sabini’s men which you have seen maybe one or twice. You tried to keep an eye out for Sabini but couldn’t find the man anywhere. You did see an inspector Campbell, the man who had brutally beat you not too long ago. You stare hard at him remembering the moments as if it was yesterday.
“Got a vendetta against the man?”
You turn around and come face to face with Polly, she smokes a cigarette like a royalty into the air. Her eyes never leave the inspectors either. You can see the pain and rage in her eyes. You don’t pry.
You turn your gaze back on the filthy man who walks with his cane, laughing and smiling with the people in the crowd.
“Men like that shouldn’t be allowed to walk on this earth.” You say.
She nods and for a split second there seems to be a connection between the two of you with your shared pain and hatred for the man. You both don’t say anything else as the man leaves out of your views.
Polly leaves first, without saying any other words. You stay in you spot scanning the crowd. Probably taking your job a bit too serious.
You can hear the laughter and cheerful cries of everyone. The experiment in the arena could be felt by everyone. You spot military men in a group together laughing and talking. You know that the tallest one is the general from the photos Thomas had showed you.
You also see a blonde curls and pink hat looking lost among the sea of people. It was a face you had only recently come to known. Grace. You leave your spot feeling the embarrassment from the other night all over again. You wonder around the place feeling bored and just wanting to leave.
“(y/n)?” a tall man who looked to be a preacher came toward you. You had never met him before.
“yes?” you say cautiously, remembering your in a public space, no ones gonna do anything.
“Tommy’s looking for you.” He says.
“what does he want?” you ask. The man just shrugs. And you sigh and follow him through the crowd.
Thomas stands on top of the staircase, looking anxious and pale.
“Found her boss.” The man says leaving you with him.
“Alright, good. (Y/n) come on. And unbutton the first two buttons.” He demands flicking the end of his cigarette he had just finished.
“Excuse me?” you say crossing your arms and standing still.
Thomas stares at you and looks baffled at your disobedience as if this was his first time meeting you.
“Please, (Y/n). I’ll explain inside.” His tone quitter and pleading.
You follow him but don’t unbutton anything of yours. He leads you into a room that looks like only the rich and royalty would eat here. You felt out of place immediately. You both don’t talk as you sit across from one another. You watch him put another cigarette in his mouth. He doesn’t meet your eyes as he talks.
“Look, I didn’t want to ask you this…”
“Just tell me, no need to prolong it.”
“I need you to get him isolated.”  You hear his words and double meaning behind them. You can feel your stomach turning in disgust of what’s he asking you. Your face is kept neutral as you talk.
“What happened to following him till he was alone to piss?” You ask
 “Doesn’t matter.”
 “Look, I’m not-“
He grabs your hand across the table and holds it tightly. It burns but you don’t let go. You stare at your intertwined hands.
“I don’t want you to do this. I don’t want to think of you anywhere alone with him. But right now, I trust you and only you to do this. Please. Or else I’m fucked.”
You wanted to be snarky and petty. You wanted to say “Ask Grace”. You wanted to say screw you and leave. You wanted to slap him or kick him. But you saw the sincerity in his voice. You saw the fear in his eyes that he always seemed to hide.
“okay fine. Ill do it.” You say.
His grip doesn’t soften as he continues to hold you. “Thank you.” He says softly.
Thomas leaves you in the fancy room by yourself. He went over details of where to lure over the general. It was a place that would be very private, no witnesses. Thomas said that he would be there in 15 minutes, he promised that nothing would happen to you. You could tell he wanted to keep that promise but you weren’t sure if he could.
You saw the general at another table with other military men. He noticed you right away. His eye never leaves your figure as you sat by yourself.
‘too easy’ you thought to yourself as the general himself came over to you.
He introduced himself, kissed your hand like a gentleman might, and sat where Thomas was not minutes ago. It was light conversation before you decide to break it. There was no other way to lure him, other than sex. And that what you did. Pretending to be a prostitute wasn't hard. You had been around some your whole life. You knew the lingo and prices and tricks. But not everyone could do it. You knew that. As you took the mans wandering hand off your knee from under the table and guided him away from the fancy room. You took him down hallways and corridors, trying to properly remember the map Thomas had shown you.
                                           *********Warning*********
“Where are you taking me?” The general asks flirtatiously.
 “Somewhere private.” You answer.
Finally you found the spot of no witness and people. It was quite and literally no one around. You feel the Generals hot mouth on your neck, biting at you. You fake a giggle at the action but your stomach was turning in disgust. You took a quick glance at your watch. You got here too early. 5 more minutes until Thomas was here.
You can feel the generals fingers wander to the hem of your dress, rushing to pull it up. You push it down and step away from him, laughing a bit nervously at the contact.
“Don’t be a tease now, love.” He says
“I just us to take our time.” You lie and smile sweetly. You had never been in this position before and you were very nervous. You could feel your hands shaking as you tried to gain control hoping to stop  it.
“I don’t have time.” The general says grabbing you harshly and turning you around.
“Wait, wait.” You say feeling violated like never before.
You kick him hard in the stomach, causing him to step backward from you. You run to the other wall, wanting nothing but distance from the guy.
“You bitch.” He sneers coming toward you with an ugly smile.
You pull you knife out of your thigh holster and point it toward him. He stops upon seeing a weapon. And then he laughs.
 “How adorable.” He says
You glance at your watch again. Its past the time Thomas should have been here. You feel a bit of dread poor over you. You don’t know how you were gonna fight off some military man. Your skills weren’t up to par on his, you knew that. Maybe enough to cause damage and run. Maybe.
He stalks toward you with all the confidence in the world. His face gives it off like this a game for him, he likes that you’re not giving in, that you’re fighting against him. It’s an inconvenience but he likes a challenge.
You step forward, slashing him across the cheek. He doesn’t react to it as he grabs your wrist. His giant hand pushing it back at an odd angle. You try to use your other hand to hit him but it does nothing. You’re forced to drop the knife. He pushes you against the wall. His eyes animalistic and you cry in pain as your head makes contact, hard with the wood.
You see black spots around your vision as you hear the man say something to you, you don’t know what. His hands roam around your body but you focus on anything but. You hear the zipping of pants and your hearts begins to race at the thought of whats to come next.  Tears slip down your eyes as you think of no one coming to save you.
“Russell!” You hear a familiar voice yell.
The general leans off your body, you slide down on the wall looking up to see Thomas with his pistol pointed at the general. The gun clicks.
 Nothing happens.
“Fuck!” Thomas yells as the General rushes over to Thomas, the pair beginning to fight each other.
You scramble to your feet, feeling awfully dizzy. You see Thomas gun on the floor. The men continue fighting each other. The general trying to reach his gun on his hip.
You take Thomas’s gun aiming it, but nothing was coming out. It was jammed.
You see the general push his finger into Thomas eye, you can see the gun finally in his hand. Thomas knows it too as he grabs at that arm hoping to take it from him. You think fast kicking the general’s legs, making him fall.  The gun that was in his hand now on the floor. Which Thomas quickly grabs aiming it right under the generals chin and shooting without hesitation.
The two of you pant heavily as it finally is over. Thomas looks over at you and his shoulder slump.
 “Are you okay?” he asks.
“I’m fine,” you say, forgetting how badly you must look with your tear stained face, “Where were you?”
He shakes his head, “I’m sorry,” He reaches a hand toward you wiping away the tears that were still falling, “You’re crying.”
You didn’t know what to say as he strokes your cheek, catching runaway tears that you had no control over. You try to steady your breathing, staring into his steel blue eyes.
“I will never ask you to do anything like that again.” He says.
You nod at his words, touching the hand that’s on your face and gently pulling it away.
“We need to go separate ways. Or else we’re suspects.” You say.
“Meet me by the where- where they take the bets ay?”
He stares at you like he wants to say more but again, he doesn’t. You both walk separate directions. You pick up your knife on the way out, leaving the rest of the crime scene alone.
You walk down the way to the betting place. You can see all the police and military men rushing to where you had just come from. You know the peaky blinders, now, were threatening Sabinis men, burning the licenses at this moment.
You stand by yourself, waiting until you see a familiar face once again. This time she notices you too. The beautiful blonde walks toward you.
 “Hello.” She says.
“Hi,” You say, “is youre looking for-“
“I’m not. I’m just here to place my own bet.” She says holding a ticket up.
You both stand in uncomfortable silence.
“I did see him earlier,” She says eyeing you from the side. You look forward as she speaks, “I professed my love, told him I would leave my husband for him and everything.”
You swallow a huge lump in your throat that you didn’t even realize was there. She continues speaking.
“He told me no,” You turn to her baffled as you always assumed, he was head over heels in love with the beautiful Grace, “I mean I known for awhile what his answer would be but I had to give it one last try. Oh don’t look surprised.”
 “I- “
“You should count yourself lucky. He doesn’t love too often but when he does,” She takes a pause and her eyes though are focused on you don’t seem to be looking at you. Almost as it she’s lost in a memory. She sighs, “He just really does.”
Before you can say anything else to the woman, she leaves with a smile. A headache begins to form on the back of your head where you had hit your head earlier. You leave the crowded betting room, the noise and smoky air becoming too much for you.
You’ll find Mr. Shelby later. With all that has happened today, it was becoming a lot and you needed a moment to just process it all. As you walk alone you spot two men holding a man by his two arms. He had a cap on like the other peaky blinders. You follow them Noticing another man leading them. You finally see his face.
Your mouth talks before your you can think.
 “Thomas!” You cry out.
His head jolts up looking for the source of your voice. The men bring his neck down, keeping his face looking at the ground. All of the worst things begin to swirl around your mind. The plan didn’t work, they caught him, the inspector double crossed him, Sabini had men ready to take him out. As well as moments, the two of you had shared that now were going to be just past memories of what ifs and unsaid words that should have been spoken.
You follow them as best as you can, watch them as they put him in the back of some car, a gun pointed towards him as they close the doors. You couldn’t help him. You watched the car drive away feeling useless and guilty. Wishing to have done more. You see his cap on the ground and pick it up. You look around for someone who could save the day but everyone was in their own happy world. And you were holding on to a hat feeling a loss like never before.

You sat with your hand resting in his, not knowing exactly what you were getting yourself into. About 10 months ago you had met Tommy at the Garrison while out with your friends. You two hit it off instantly, not knowing at the time that the men jokingly cheering him on in the distance were his brothers. You distinctly remembered your friend tensing up when he came over, a cold yet unguarded look in his eyes. He was drunk, but still handled himself better than over half of the pubs occupancy.
“What do you drink miss?” He asked, licking his lips before rubbing a cigarette along his bottom lip and lighting it.
“Oh...um whiskeys fine...” You said, watching his ocean eyes pierce through yours.
Your friend quickly leaned over to you as he struck up a conversation with the bartender, whispering in your ear.
“My god look at his hat Y/n...he has a blade in it. He’s one of those Peaky Blinder men...be careful, they’re no good.” She said.
You quickly glanced at the small razor glinting from the peak of his cap, your eyes widening a bit at the realization. They were some of the most respected - yet feared people in Small Heath. They were also very wealthy and you knew from town gossip that they would pay cops hush-money regarding some of their “actions.”
As you turned back to your nervous friend, you put a hand on her shoulder to reassure her. You weren’t scared or really on edge about him, which was odd, but all it did was make you curious.
As you turned back to him, you watched as he nodded at the bartender as he poured two shots of the brown liquid. You lifted an eyebrow at him as he didn’t put any money down for them.
“I’m Tommy Shelby, and a Shelby’s drinks are on the house.” He said before clinking his glass with yours. You smiled and knocked back your shot, the cool burn from it flowing down your throat.
“and I’m Y/n. Y/n Y/l/n...” You said winking and extending a hand to him. Instead of shaking it, he took it and gently kissed the top of it.
As the night went on, your friends grew tired so they went home, but not before checking to make sure you were okay. With a wink, you sent them on their way and continued talking with Tommy, and eventually meeting his brothers.
You smiled at the memory as your hand still rested in his, the smoke from his cigarette filling your lungs as you waited for the boys, aunt Polly, and her son Michael to come in for the latest family meeting. About a month into your relationship you got to meet everyone and they fell in love with you, which was a huge weight lifted off your shoulders at the time.
Soon enough everyone came in, except for John who strolled in a tad later looking disheveled. You and Tommy smirked at each other as you both knew he was with Esme not long ago.
“Hey John, nice of you to join us.” You said, next to Tommy who smirked.
“Oh fuck off.” He said jokingly.
“Alright, enough with the pleasantries, we have business to discuss.” Tommy said shortly after your remarks.
Everyone looked at him as did you, awaiting whatever crazy plan was going to come out of his mouth this time.
“We’re going to the races, but keep an eye out for a certain group of people. They’ll be wearing white suits. They fucked with some of the Lee’s things and we’re going to help them out a little bit since we’re on better terms now.” He said.
Y/n smirked slightly. “Is Peaky business funny to you love?” Tommy asked, lightening his stern tone slightly.
The smirk you had only grew. “No of course not, but I find white suits to be a hilarious looking dirt trap.” You said, cringing at the thought of a dirt and horse-shit covered suit. Tommy smirked and nodded in agreement.
“These men never had a good fashion sense dear. Luckily, you’re with the people who do.” Polly said walking by you and placing a hand in your shoulder. You clasped your hand over hers and smiled as Tommy continued.
“We’re going to take over their books because we know horses, we know the odds, and we know what we’re doing.” He said.
“Alright, well I’ll go get the car.” Michael said and left. Polly pulled you along to get ready in some race attire. You wore a nice hat with bright flowers adorning the top in extravagant fashion, and a black lace dress with black heels to match. Tommy and you rode separately so he could scope out the scene and get a feel for the place. He looked around slyly and you sipped your drink and made pleasant conversation with some nearby women. Lost in the chit-chat, you briefly lost sight of Tommy, panicking a bit until one of the women pointed past you in the distance. He was talking to one of the men in a white suit. Your eyes grazed down the man, his hair barely visible from his matching white top-hat. You smirked as you saw the hems of his pants slowly browning from the dirt covered tracks and stables. You walked near them and before you get to Tommy you felt a hand on your shoulder.
“Not so fast Y/n. He’s working the bastards, don’t interrupt.” Arthur said.
“Oh. okay, I’ll just sit with Pol, watch the races I guess.” You said, seeing Polly taking a seat in the distance.
“If you hear a bell toll three times, that’s our signal that something’s happened. You’ll meet us round back in that case.” He said motioning towards the dimly lit area behind the racetrack, near the stables.
“Alright, thanks for the heads up.” You said patting his shoulder as you took another sip of your drink and taking a seat with Polly.
You watched as Tommy came back to the boys and discussed something and then went over to you both. He sat by you, kissing your forehead as he often would.
You heard the trumpet signaling the start of the races, the jockeys mounted and the horses ready to go. Then a shrill bell rang once as they sprinted out, passing each other as dirt flung from their hooves. The horses had different names, each with a number on the silks of the jockeys and draping under their saddles. You looked at the program in your hand at the varying numbers by each horse. You were handed it when you had walked in.
“That horse there went up 5 to 1, instead of 15 to 1. We got them to change it. More people will bet on the 5 to 1 because it’s considered a favorite.” He explained, motioning to a black horse. But you had your eye on a leaner one. It was a beautiful gray color, and you read its name was “Up in Smoke.” You watched as it raced around the track, speeding past the others while still at 23 to 1 odds. “Oi. Now this gray one might do it though, it’s more of an underdog. Now that one will bring in some money.” He said and you smiled.
You saw them go neck and neck and you cheered as your favorite horse won.
“You liked that one aye?” Tommy asked.
“Yeah. It’s beautiful.” You said. You glanced at him as he looked at it’s trainers in the distance. You tensed as you saw a couple of the men in white suits near the black horse that came in second, their faces full of anger as they realized Tommy and the boys fucked with their earnings.
Tommy noticed too and quickly left to head towards the back near the stables with the rest of the boys following in shifts to not cause suspicion. You nervously sat with Polly as the second race was about to start. Then your stomach dropped as you heard three bells in the distance. “Let’s go.” Polly said, guiding you to the back where Tommy and the boys went. You entered the dimly lit room warily, scared of what you’d see.
You held back a scream as you saw Arthur, Tommy and two of the men in white suits fighting, each of them covered in blood. Polly took your hand and tugged you towards the exit but you stood there silently, watching to make sure Tommy and Arthur were okay. You shuddered as you caught Tommy pulling out a blade and slitting the mans throat, covering him in blood as Arthur beat the other man to a pulp. Tommy turned around panting a bit and saw you standing there, Polly looking down with her hands folded, waiting for them to be done, but you just stood there staring at him. He walked towards you as his brothers came through, Arthur going to the car after being dragged off the guy by John.
“Y/n...” Tommy said, walking towards you carefully.
“Don’t-don’t touch me.” You said, avoiding his hand moving to touch your shoulder, the blood dripping off it. “...not until you wash that shit off.” You said, gulping and looking away.
“They warned me about you...they really did.” You said, thinking back to that night in the bar with your friends.
He looked at your bewildered expression, and then glanced at the blood-stained white suits of the men he killed for the bets and for the Lee’s.
Smirking at his handy work, he turned back to you.
“That’s just business, sweetheart.”

Chapter 1
--
The morning light blinded you when you woke. You had to squint to allow your eyes time to get used to the brightness. Waking up in your tent was always slightly dark and gloomy but you had slept under the stars last night. You had woken up exactly how you fell asleep, laid in the grass opening surrounded by trees. With your head resting on Arthur's broad chest, your legs were now entangled slightly and his arms wrapped around you pulling your body close to his. His body was radiating heat which only made you cling onto him more. It had been a cold night and you hadn't made a campfire so that you could see as many stars in the night sky as possible. Waking up in Arthur's embrace sparked a fire in your chest and your smile beamed from ear to ear. You tilted your head up slowly to see that he was also awake.
''Mornin' beautiful'' his voice was husky as he had only just woken up. He smiled as he looked down to see your face looking up at him. Arthur's eyes were bright in the morning light, he looked well rested for once. His words made your heart flutter and you could feel the warm rush of blood to your cheeks.
''Mornin' Arthur'' you spoke sweetly. He leant down to place a kiss on your forehead. The both of you laid together for a while holding each other closely. You never wanted this moment to end however, knew you would both have to go back to camp eventually. You sat up, leaving Arthur's arms, making you shiver as the cold air brushed over you. ''I don't want to go back'' you admitted. "Not yet, anyway" Arthur sat up next to you smirking at your comment.
''Me neither'' he smiled nudging you slightly with his elbow. ''But you need some food. We didn't have much to eat yesterday so you must be starvin'.'' he stood up and held out his hand to you. The mention of food made your stomach growl, you had completely forgotten about food whilst being completely entranced in Arthur's company. You took Arthur's hand and he helped you to your feet. As you were about to turn and walk over to Siego, you felt Arthur's hand pull on yours spinning you back into his arms. His arms were now wrapped around your waist, pulling your body into his. Arthur looked deeply into your eyes. ''You ain't gettin' away that easy'' he smiled cheekily before leaning down and kissing you. Each kiss the two of you shared felt even better then the last. You wrapped your arms around his neck and stood on your tiptoes to allow the kiss to deepen. It was like the world around you disappeared, leaving just the two of you together. You were unsure when the next time the both of you would be alone together so you had to make the most of the time you had. A nickering sounds jumped you both back into reality. You broke the kiss to see what had caused the noise, with your hand placed on your holster ready for someone to appear. When you realised it was just Siego you both began to laugh at your reactions.
''Come on, Cowboy'' you tapped the brim of Arthur's hat causing it to cover his eyes. He released you from his embrace to sort his hat back on top of his head. You took this opportunity to run to Siego and mount the saddle. Arthur smirked and cocked an eyebrow at you.
''And what do you think you're doin'?'' he chuckled at you.
''It's my turn to ride and your turn to sit there lookin' pretty'' you teased him. He shook his head at you with an amused smile. You held your hand out to help him up as he mounted to sit behind you. He placed his hands on your waist and you couldn't help the smirk on your face.
"Shut up" Arthur scoffed as you rode back to camp. You could tell he wasn't enjoying being the passenger on his own horse which only made you tease him more.
The camp wasn't far from where you were. You hoped, as you rode into camp, that you and Arthur would be able to sneak off to on occasions to spend time alone under the stars. You both were very private people so you weren't too keen on telling the whole camp about your relationship. The thought of being pestered and asked questions on the subject was daunting. Talking about your feelings to one another was hard enough, never mind telling others as well. You both decided for now to keep your relationship between the two of you and when you were ready you would tell the others.
''Who's there?'' Javier called out to you.
''Arthur, you dumbass'' Arthur yelled back. You smirked at his comment as Javier rolled his eyes.
''Welcome back'' Javier spoke sarcastically before turning back to watch the track into camp. You both dismounted and you hitched Siego to the post. The smell of food made your stomach cramp as you made your way over to Pearson's cart. Arthur passed you some bread with jam and an apple before grabbing his own food.
''Go on, get yourself a coffee. I need to go talk to Lenny'' Arthur gestured at the young man sitting on a log looking out over the water. You nodded in reply before heading to sit by the fire. Charles was sitting on one of the logs as you made your way over to sit beside him.
''You're alive then?'' he smiled up at you as you took your seat.
''Just about'' you smirked as you began to tuck into your food.
"Good, I was beginning to wonder where you had gotten too" Charles was busy stringing his bow. "I nearly went out looking for you this morning" he looked at you relieved.
"Thanks Charles, I just got lost in the dark. Luckily, Arthur found me" you lied. Your cheeks were aching from smiling at the thought of last night as you ate your food. Charles was too focused on his bow to notice. You glanced over to the horses when the sudden realisation that you still hadn't checked to see if Dallas had returned to camp flooded you. You stuffed the last bit of bread into your mouth as you stood from the log and ran over to the horses. ''Shit, shit, shit'' you whispered under your breath as you couldn't see him with the others.
''You looking for Dallas?'' Charles ran after you.
''Yes, have you seen him?'' your voice was slightly panicked as you scanned the camp.
''No, I haven't but I'm sure he will be fine'' he reassured you.
''What's going on?'' Hosea asked as he approached you with John following close behind.
''Dallas hasn't come back'' you took a deep breath to try and relax. You know that to some people it would seem silly to get worried over a horse but Dallas was more than that. He was not only a very good horse but he was a gift from Arthur.
''Well I ain't doing anything today so we can go find him'' John patted Charles on the shoulder as he made his way over to Old Boy. "You comin' Charles?".
''I can't, I've got to go hunting or Pearson will never stop pestering me'' Charles sighed.
''Take Silver Dollar, my girl. I'm sure you and John will find him soon enough'' Hosea pointed to his horse. He must have sensed the concern in your voice as he tried to reassure you. ''Now, he's got a good spirit but don't let him get the better of you'' he took you over to his horse and patted him on the neck as you mounted up.
''Thank you Hosea. I'll take good care of him'' you smiled at him.
''I know you will'' he patted your leg. ''You better get going''. You looked over to see John was mounted and ready to go so you spurred Silver Dollar into a trot and headed out of camp. John followed closely behind you until you came to the open road where he rode next to you.
''So where do we start?'' John asked.
''I have no idea'' you sighed feeling like this might be a lost cause. ''He could be anywhere by now''.
''We will find him, don't worry'' John smiled assuringly at you. ''Where did you last see him? We can start there''. You nodded and told John what happened yesterday. With that you rode out to the house where you last saw Dallas. The both of you stayed hidden in the woods as you approached the house. You didn't want to get caught by any patrols that may still be lerking in the area. The barn where you had hidden only hours ago was now a pile of ash. You could smell the burnt timber and the smoke that was still rising to the air. Bodies were laying motionless in the grass that hadn't been moved yet. It looked as though no one was around but you didn't want to spend too much time lingering just in case. ''Looks like you had a fun night'' John smirked at you as you glanced around to see any sign of the missing horse.
''I wouldn't have put it that way'' you glanced at him innocently. ''I think he went this way, through the woods'' you pointed in the direction away from the house. John took the lead and followed in the direction you pointed. He managed to find some hoof prints in the soft ground below. You both followed them as it was the only lead you had.
''So how are you holdin' up? Last time we spoke you were drunk as hell'' he chuckled at you. You shook your head as you pinched the bridge of your nose.
''I'm alright, don't remind me'' you smirked. ''I never thanked you for looking after me John. I would have been a lot worse the next mornin' if it weren't for you''.
''Ahh It's the least I can do'' John smiled sweetly at you.
''How about yourself? How are you holding up?'' you asked as you scanned the floor, making sure you were still following the right tracks.
''I'm as good as I can be'' John replied with his eyes hidden by the brim of his hat. You sensed something was off with him but you couldn't quite tell what it was.
''Is something wrong?'' you questioned shyly, scanning his face for his reaction. For the first time in a long time you properly looked at John. His deep cuts were now just healed scars across his face and lip. His black hair just grazing his shoulders but was mostly hidden by his hat dark grey hat. John had dark features and short black stubble gracing his face. He was only in his mid twenties but looked like he had lived many lives already. You could understand why Abigail felt the way she did about John, he was clearly a very handsom man. He was smaller in fame compared to Arthur and Charles but he was still well built and strong. He let out a long sigh before looking back at you. John's eyes caught yours and you could see the sadness in them.
''It's Jack and Abigail. I know I haven't been great to either of them but whenever I try I just seem to mess things up. We just fight constantly and I'm tired of it'' he shook his head turning his gaze to the floor again. ''I don't even know how to talk to my own son'' he scoffed.
''I'm sorry John, It ain't a situation I know a lot about'' you paused. You knew how hard everything was for both John and Abigail. They hadn't gotten off to the best start when John took off and left both Abigail and Jack for a whole year. John was now trying to amend his mistakes but Abigail still held a grudge, which you could understand. ''I know it's tiring but don't give up on em. They need you more then you know. Abigail is just givin' you a hard time because she's been through a lot. It ain't right but you have to understand the reasons why she's actin' like she is'' you gave John a weak smile. You wanted to be there for him, much like how he is always there for you but you had no idea what you could say to help.
''Yeah I guess'' he smiled back. ''What an idiot I have been. I shouldn't have run off like that but I guess I just wasn't ready for such a commitment''.
''You'll make up for it. I know you will'' you looked deeply into his eyes to try and assure him that everything will work itself out.
"We will see. I wish she was as easy to speak to as you, (Y/N)" John chuckled.
"I..." You were cut off by a loud screech coming from deeper in the woods. It sounded like an animal in pain and without thinking you spurred the horses on in the direction it was coming from. As you approached you could hear the screeching getting louder. At the bottom of a hill, hidden behind some trees you spotted Dallas struggling to move. He had his leg trapped in a snare set out by hunters to catch game. Quickly, you dismounted and ran over to him. The leg that was caught was bleeding from where the wire was cutting deeper into his leg. You could see the white of his eye, he was breathing heavily as he was panicking. He was trying to break free from the trap which only tightened the wire around his leg. ''Whoa, calm down boy. It's alright'' you managed to grab the reins and pat his neck to try and calm him down. John was looking over the trap to try and find where the wire was tied so that he could release it. You were flooded with guilt as you looked into Dallas' terrified face. He had been here all night, scared and in pain, while you were cuddling up to Arthur. John managed to release the wire, causing Dallas to try and bolt as he felt he was now free. You clung to the reins as he battled with you to let him go. ''Steady boy. You're okay now'' you spoke calmly. It wasn't long before Dallas calmed enough for John to remove the wire from his leg.
''There you are fella'' he patted the black stallion. ''See, he's alright'' he assured you as he threw the wire to the side. You looked at the deep gash around Dallas' pastern where the wire had been tightened. It wasn't deep but it looked sore and could get infected if not treated properly.
''Lets get you back to camp boy'' you felt relieved. You decided to lead Dallas back so tied his reins to the horn of Hosea's saddle before mounting Silver Dollar. ''Didn't think I would see you again, my friend'' you giggled as you and John headed back towards camp. ''Thank you for helpin' me find him John'' you shouted to John who was leading the way back.
''My pleasure'' he smiled back at you whilst tipping his hat. ''I'm just glad we found him. I know how much you care for him". The two of you rode slowly as Dallas was hobbling slightly on his injured leg. John began telling you stories of when he was young and how Dutch taught him how to read and write. You laughed along as he told you how Dutch would loose his patients when John couldn't get the hang of it. It was early evening by the time you had made it back to camp. You were greeted by Hosea and Dutch at the hitching posts.
''Ahh so you found him'' Dutch bellowed over to you as you approached them.
''Yeah, he was caught on a snare, no wonder he didn't come back'' you nodded as you dismounted Silver Dollar. ''Thank you for lettin' me borrow him Hosea'' you untied Dallas' reins from the saddle and hitched him on the post.
''Not a problem my girl. I gather he looked after you well'' he smiled at you tieing HS horse to the post.
"He did indeed" you turned to patt Silver Dollar on his neck and feed him a carrot from your bag.
''John, (Y/N), I have a job for you both'' Dutch caught your attention. You all gathered round the hitching post as Dutch explained the job. ''I need you both to look into something for me. Sheriff Grey told me about a couple of horses at the Braithwaite property. I don't know the in's and out's but if you could go to the Greys plantation at some point to find out more, I think there will be some money in it for us'' Dutch's voice was eager when he mentioned the money.
''Sure, Dutch'' you nodded.
''We can go tomorrow mornin'. First thing'' John agreed.
''Brilliant. I knew you two would be up to the job'' Dutch exclaimed as he patted you both on the shoulder. ''Oh, take Javier with you too'' he instructed before him and Hosea took their leave. You turned your attention back to Dallas' cut, luckily the bleeding had stopped now so you grabbed some water to clean the wound. John stayed with you as he brushed down Old Boy and Charles came to help when he got back from hunting. He gave you some herbs to put on the cut to stop infections which you gently applied to Dallas' leg. Once you were done, the three of you made your way back into camp to get some food. You noticed that Micah was back. He hadn't been at camp since Arthur had broken him out of jail but you saw him sat by the fire as you made your way over. You had only ever spoken to Micah once or twice but you always remembered him being cruel when you were tied to the wagon all those weeks ago. He used to threaten to kill you or would spit at you as he walked by. Nothing about the man was likable to you, so you were not so pleased he was back.
''Scarface, you happy to see me back?'' Micah directed his question at John as he chuckled under his breath.
''Micah, I would have preferred to see you hang'' John spat back at him as you all sat around the fire.
''Oh, no need to be like that'' Micah threw his hands in the air in defence. You kept quiet, you didn't want to draw his attention to you so you just ate your food silently. By the time you had finished your stew and a bottle of beer the rest of camp had joined you round the fire. Sadie and Tilly came and sat next to you and you spoke to them about where you eventually found Dallas. Arthur also joined the group to sit around the fire, you looked up to see him sat opposite you. You caught his eyes on you and you shared a shy smile before turning your attention to the convocations you were in. Although you knew why it wasn't the best idea to have your feelings for each other public knowledge, you hated the idea of not being able to hold him or kiss him whilst you were in camp. You longed for his attention and seeing him sat across from you only made you crave him more.
''How are things with you and Arthur?'' Sadie nudged you with her elbow, keeping her voice hushed. Panicked at the mention of your relationship, you looked round to see that Tilly had now turned her attention to Sean and Lenny. Once you realised It was only you and Sadie talking, you couldn't help the blushed smile that crossed your face.
''Things are good'' you whispered back glancing over at Arthur. He was talking with John and Bill as he smoked on a cigarette. The light from the cigarette end would illuminate his eyes, from the shadow cast by the bim of his hat, every time he took a drag.
''He keeps looking over at you'' Sadie teased and you turned your attention back to her. ''You're both gonna get found out you know. It's so damn obvious'' she glanced between you and Arthur.
''I don't think everyone is as observant as you Sadie'' you giggled glancing round the rest of camp. ''I'm pretty sure if anyone thought anything, either Karen or Mary-Beth would have asked by now. They have only just stopped asking me if I'm sweet on anyone'' you both giggled and you heard your stomach growl. You were still hungry even after a bowl of stew and you remembered having a tin of biscuits in your saddle bag. As your stomach started to growl louder you decided the pack of biscuits were too tempting not to have so you excused yourself to go and get them. You walked over to the horses and grabbed the tin from your saddle bag, checking on Dallas as you passed him. On your way back to the fire you were met by Micah. His blonde hair was covered by the white hat he wore and his beady eyes were looking straight at you. He had clearly had a bit too much to drink as he was stumbling around as he walked in your direction. ''Micah'' you greeted him as you walked by. Your intentions were to walk straight by him and ignore any comments he made but his hand was quick to grab your arm and pull you back in front of him.
''That's no way to greet me girl'' he growled at you. The smell of liquor on his breath was overwhelming and his grip on your arm tightened. ''You're a pretty one ain't ya. Better than when you were tied to that wagon....Although I must admit you looked just as nice tied up'' he snickered as he looked at you up and down with hunger in his eyes. You pulled your arm from his grasp forcefully and he almost lost his balance.
''Go to hell Micah'' you spat back at him. A cruel grin appeard his face as you spoke to him. It was as though he liked it when people dispised him. He regained his balance and blocked your way back to camp by towering over you.
''I like a girl with a bit of fire'' he smirked and grabbed your throat, holding it tightly. ''I'll show you how you treat a real man'' he whispered in your ear. His breath ran cold down your neck and your body tensed. You used all the force you could muster to slap him across the face but he intercepted your arm before you could make an impact. His laugh was taunting you which only made you more angry, your knee came up to hit him in his stomach and he released his grip on you as he grasped his belly. ''Bitch, ain't you'' his amusement faded which was replaced by pure anger and you were the one in the firing line. You reached for your pistol to defend yourself but you had taken your gun belt off as you ate, leaving it by the fire. As you looked up from your empty hip, Micah had reached for his knife and was already holding it at your throat. He leant into you and took a deep breath in, taking in your smell before smiling devilishly at you. "Ain't so tough without a gun, are ya?". Your heart was racing as you had nothing to defend yourself with. The metal of his knife blade against your neck was cold and sent a shiver down your spine.
"Just you wait" you taunted him as you felt the hilt of your own knife in your back pocket. You were about to pull it on him when the distinct crack of a pistol being cocked came from behind Micah.
''Get your goddamn hands off her Micah'' Arthur growled. He was standing with the barrel of his pistol aimed at Micah's head. The sound of his angered voice bellowed through camp, and conversation were suddenly silenced. All the camp's attention had turned to the three of you and Micah remained unmoved.
''Come on Cowpoke, I'm just havin' a bit of fun here'' Micah kept the knife on your throat but his attention was on Arthur.
''Fun's over'' Arthur moved in closer with a darkness in his eyes as he looked at Micah. His gun was now placed against Micah's temple and his finger ready at the trigger. You glanced between the two men as Micah weighed up his options. He turned back to you before removing his knife from your neck and putting it back in his belt. Arthur then lowered his gun and placed it into the halter at his hip. John, Dutch and Sadie had made their way over, after hearing the commotion in case they had to intervene. You took a deep breath in releasing your grip on the hilt of your knife as Micah stepped away from you. He sighed loudly before laughing at Arthur.
''If I didn't know you any better I would have said you cared for this girl, Mr Morgan. You're going soft'' his voice was slurred. Micah stumbled on his way to square up to Arthur. He stood directly in front of him and you watched as Arthur towered above him.
''I should 'av left you in jail to hang'' Arthur spat back. His brow was furrowed and his jaw was clenched. Micah cocked his eyebrow with a smile on his face.
''So what's she like in bed?'' Micah ignored his comment, he knew he was getting under Arthur's skin and he was enjoying the attention. Arthur's fists clenched shut. You glanced at John to try and stop this madness but he looked between you and Arthur, open mouthed, at what Micah was suggesting. You were about to grab Arthur yourself and walk away, Micah was not worth the time and you had enough of his torments. ''Send her to my tent when you're done, she looks like a wild one'' Micah sniggered. That was all it took to break Arthur's temper. His face turned red and is fist came up and hit Micah in the jaw as hard as he could. Micah fell to the floor with a thud. Dutch and John were quick to grab Arthur's arms and hold him back before he did any further damage.
"Touch her again and I'll give you more then a broken nose" Arthur threatened as he was getting pulled away by John and Dutch. The rest of camp were staring at the scene playing out in front of them. You stood there frozen, unaware of what to do. The damage had already been done. Although you know you shouldn't have, you felt a deep satisfaction watching Micah being knocked onto his arse.
''That is enough'' Dutch shouted as he pulled Arthur away from Micah. ''Micah, go get cleaned up. Arthur, go calm down'' he gestured to the both of them. Micah's nose was running with blood from the impact. He fumbled to his feet and walked straight back into camp to clean up while Arthur marched into the woods away from everyone. You were left standing with Dutch, John and Sadie watching as the two men strode away. ''(Y/N), you alright?'' Dutch asked you as he placed a hand on your shoulder. You nodded in response, still trying to process what had just happened. "Good, I'm going to go have a chat with Micah" Dutch informed you as he followed the beaten man back into camp.
''What the hell was that about?'' John asked. He glanced at you catching your eye before he averted his gaze to the floor. There was a concerned expression on his face but for some reason he wouldn't look at you.
''Micah grabbed me and Arthur stood in to defend me'' you huffed rubbing your throat where the knife had been sitting.
"What was Micah getting at then? Because Arthur was gettin' pretty wound up" John questioned his voice loud and irritated as he regained his breath from trying to restrain Arthur. Your breath got hitched in your mouth as you panick. The palm of your hands become sweaty and you didn't know how to answer. You had no intention of telling the gang any time soon about your relationship with Arthur.
''I should go check on him'' you looked in the direction Arthur had stormed off ignoring John's question.
"Sure you are alright?" Sadie asked as she saw the panick in your face.
"Yeah, I'm fine" you nodded before you turned away to follow after Arthur. You followed the fresh tracks in the ground until you found Arthur sitting under a tree with his back leant up against it. His head was hanging low with his hat covering his eyes.
''Thank you'' you spoke softly as you approached him. He lifted his head up to look at you. ''I always knew he was a piece of shit but I didn't know quite how true that was'' you tried to lighten the mood. Arthur's hands were still in fists but he couldn't help the small smile on his face when he saw you.
''Yeah, that's one way of putting it'' he growled. ''You alright?'' he stood up and glanced at your neck making sure Micah hadn't left a mark on you.
''I'm fine'' you smiled as you wrapped your arms around Arthur's waist and buried your head into his chest. He pulled you in closer to him and placed a kiss on the top of your head. You took a deep breath allowing yourself to relax in his arms.
''I should av' killed the bastard'' he mumbled. ''If he ever touches you again then I will'' he tightened his grip on you.
''That's if I don't do it first'' you giggled as you pulled away and grabbed his hand to see the bruises that were already forming on his knuckles. "You shouldn't have punched him" you grazed the bruise with your fingertips before looking up into Arthur's eyes.
"He deserved it" he defended himself. "He's lucky that's all he got" his brow furrowed. You smiled shyly at him knowing he was only this angry because he cared for you. Having someone help to defend you was still something you were going to have to get used to but you were greatful for him. It made you feel safer, knowing that you had Arthur watching out for you. The temper he has that you used to be weary of you knew would never be directed at you but only used to defend you. You stayed with him in the woods for a while until he was fully calmed down. You both sat under a tree whilst he told you about his day with Lenny at a place called Shady Bell and then how he and Micah robbed a bank coach which the O'Driscolls ended up turning up to as well. ''Sounds more interesting then my day'' you smiled up at him. ''I went to find Dallas with John'' you chuckled.
''Sorry I couldn't help ya" he scratched the back of his neck. "Least you had John to help you find him'' Arthur's voice was relaxed now as you sat close to one another.
"You help me plenty enough. Plus John isn't bad company. I just feel sorry for you havin' to spend time with Micah" you teased him. Arthur smirked at you before gently moving a strand of hair away from your face, caressing your cheek before leaning down and kissing you softly. He then rested his forehead on yours. ''You are so beautiful'' he whispered softly. Your chest filled with a warm sensation and your heart stopped beating for a split second. Everything you felt towards Arthur seemed to double in intensity everyday, heat ran to your cheeks as you looked at him. His deep blue eyes captivated you in a trance that you never wanted to leave. He smiled sweetly before looking at the ground. ''We better go back before someone comes to check on us'' he mumbled, looking slightly upset at the prospect of going back into camp. You both stood up and shared one last kiss before making your way back into camp.
''I think I'm going to go get some rest'' you turned to Arthur. You saw the majority of the gang we're still gathered around the fire and you didn't want to face them just yet. The late nights were also catching up to you as you could feel your eyelids getting heavier.
''Alright, I'll see you in the mornin'.'' Arthur smiled. You didn't want him to leave you, you wanted him to come in and spend the night with you again and you could see in his eyes he wanted that too. It felt like a large lump had formed in your throat, you swallowed hard. Arthur hesitated before tipping his hat to you with a nervous smile. ''G'night (Y/N)'' he turned and walked towards his own cot, leaving a sense of loneliness lingering around you. You walked into your tent and got changed into your nightwear before laying on your cot and covering yourself with the blanket. The events of the night played through your head. The way Micah grabbed you and spoke about you to Arthur in front of the others. Arthur's reaction was bound to make people ask questions and you weren't ready for that. The thought of tomorrow made you feel uneasy, everyone pestering you about your relationship with Arthur, but at least you were on a job with John. He was your closest friend in camp and he always made you feel comfortable so you hoped he wouldn't question you again. Being away from camp should take your mind of things. You felt your eyes get heavy as you drifted off into a deep sleep.

What about the RDR2 boys on a road trip?
Thank you so much for this fun request! As you can see.... I went a little crazy❤️✨😩
General
They fight about what snacks they should bring and end up forgetting them all
They all fart in the car and blame each other for it.
Literally ends up being the stinkiest ride ever and everyone wants to Die
The fighting about what’s played on the stereo is endless and someone is always unhappy about it
If they have to take two separate cars, Hosea switches up the groups so that no one is stuck with the same people for too long
If one car seats seven, Hosea and Dutch will take the other for themselves (smh)
I’m not gonna lie… literally all of them would pee in a bottle… how they feel about it is pretty different, though
Arthur
Can drive one-handed
Drives in silence, not because he likes silence but because everyone else is Too Loud and he needs a break
Tries to talk about the scenery but that’s boring and he gets ignored
Also gets ignored when he points out cool cars.. and cows… and license plates…
Even Charles can’t be bothered to respond
Backseat driver
Gets yelled at constantly for this but doesn’t stop
John gets it the worst
He doesn’t have road rage, just thinks that everyone is a bad driver
His favorite thing is to roll down all of the windows in the car
Rarely gets to do this because of how many complaint’s he’d get
Stops at every farm stand on the side of the road that he sees
After a while he doesn’t even need anything and just does it because he feels bad if he drives past them
The only thing he’ll eat while driving is chips
His clothes and seat get covered in crumbs
Wears his hat, jacket and boots in the car even though it’s hot and doesn’t make sense
Also probably buys one of those dangly pine trees to hang on his rearview mirror
Can’t read in the car because he gets carsick :(
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but he doesn’t want to talk about it
John
If he’s not driving, he’s probably asleep
And if he’s not asleep, he’s “resting”
Honestly, he just doesn’t want to talk to anyone in that environment
The grumpiest one of them
He’s just mad (sad) because Abigail wouldn’t let him go with Ms. Grimshaw and the girls
Probably ends up spilling something and tries to blame it on whoever is sitting next to him
Spends most of his radio time just browsing through stations
When he finds anything he likes, it immediately goes to ads and the process starts all over again
Takes all his rest stops at 7/11 just so he can get a slushee and a hotdog
He’s okay with stopping at gas stations too but they’re just not the same
Takes off his shoes in the car and just wears his socks the whole ride
He probably drives like that, too
This is why Abigail didn’t let him go with them
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but he’d be mad about it and would try to bring it up a lot
Charles
Plans out where and when he’s going to make stops
Probably does a few stretches and some jumping jacks when he gets out of the car
He will let the gang stop at McDonalds but only if he thinks they deserve it
The only thing he orders for himself is an ice cream cone
The safest driver out of everyone
So safe, in fact, that he’s always made to drive at night
He doesn’t mind much because everyone is pretty quiet when it’s late and that means less complaining
Makes a long playlist full of music like Sufjan Stevens and Mumford & Sons (and The Black Eyed Peas)
Everyone tries to clown him for it but he’s the King of brushing it off
“When it’s your turn, you can play what you want” or “I didn’t complain when you were playing 100gecs”
First of all: drag them…
Second of all: okay, Dad.
Talented because he can read in the car without getting carsick
Apologizes for everyone’s behavior when they go anywhere
Makes everyone use hand sanitizer after doing literally anything
They have to pass it around the car like little kids
It’s probably Bath and Body Works
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but pretends that he wouldn’t
Micah
If he’s driving, he gets control of the radio. Doesn’t matter if it’s his turn or not, he gets Full Control.
If anyone even suggests changing what he’s playing, he snaps at them
Dummy probably smokes in the car
Dummy also probably eats while he drives
Holds his food while steering
Everything gets greasy
His rest stops are incredibly short
So short that they practically don’t exist
Threatens to drive off without people
The only time Dutch intervenes with his behavior is when he tries to pick up a hitchhiker
He’s like, “Look Arthur, it’s your long lost brother!”
He also probably tries to stop at a gentlemen’s club in the middle of nowhere at some point, too
“I could crash this car right now if I wanted to”
He only says this once though because it causes a riot
Backseat driver but only to Arthur
Sean swerving and Hosea speeding: I sleep
Arthur accidentally cutting someone off: REAL SHIT?
The only other one who gets to use the charging cord (because he’s mean and demands to)
Would he pee in a bottle? - He’s almost happy to
Hosea
Is never allowed to drive because he doesn’t like to make stops. He 100% will drive past every single rest stop and every single McDonalds they see
Everyone could be screaming at him to pull over and he’d just ignore them
Drives way too fast. Catch him going 90 MPH saying “I’m just going with the traffic!”
Everyone else: terrified
When it’s his turn for the radio, he chooses to play an audiobook
If you complain about being bored to him, he’ll try to get everyone to sing campfire songs
Everyone gets to about ninety-five bottles of beer on the wall before giving up and start fighting
He’s also the one to suggest playing “I Spy”
The gang will play but it’s all like
“I Spy something gross”
“Is it Micah’s butt crack?”
“Yes”
Has one of those mini electric fans that sprays water at you when you press a button
Doesn’t share it
Always has his phone plugged into the charger to the point where no one else can use it
Keeps a box of bubbly water under his seat
It’s lukewarm
He’s the only one who drinks it but he offers it to everyone 24/7
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but only because he makes the other boys do it and he feels guilty
Dutch
Acts like everyone should be grateful he’s driving even though they’re all taking turns
Pulls the “You’re lucky I drove, I’m not a chauffeur!” card when someone is mean to him about anything
Music of choice is just Elvis Presley with a few random smooth jazz songs mixed in
“What do you boys know about this?”
Everyone: …
Complains about everything
If he’s not complaining about someone being irritating, he’s complaining about how hot it is, and if not that, there’s something else
Always thirsty and needs to have a drink with him at all time
Will only share it with Hosea or Arthur and lowkey neither of them want what he’s drinking
When he’s driving, makes everyone stop at a drive-through cafe where he orders the most expensive iced drink on the menu
Like Arthur, gets mad at people for “not enjoying the view”
“You boys are so lucky you get to experience the…” Blah, blah, blah
Ends up falling asleep but only because he wears a sleep mask and ear plugs
Probably listens to music on a walkman lmao
*Dutch in sunglasses and headphones* “Sorry I didn’t see you right there, I was too busy, mmm, blocking out the haters”
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, because he thinks it’s efficient
Kieran
Slowest driver of the bunch
And out of all of them, takes the most stops
Probably packs his own bag of snacks and it’s all fucking jellybeans and gummy bears
Says that they’re the easiest to eat while driving
Technically, that isn’t even a lie (Micah, please take notes)
He will stop anywhere anyone asks… Why is he so nice?
His favorite stop is Dunkin’ Donuts, though
The music he plays is either great or awful and no one can agree on which is which
Every other song is 2000s dance techno
That or Taylor Swift (and that’s when people start yelling at him to change it)
Spends the whole trip in slides and no one wants to sit next to him because of his exposed feet
He can (and will) drive in them, though
When he’s not driving, he’s probably watching a movie or playing games on a big ass tablet
Gets made fun of for using huge headphones
People are just jealous he’s able to find a wifi signal
Would he pee in a bottle? - He’s done grosser things for less, so yes
Javier
Brings himself a sandwich to eat and ends up sitting on it
Backseat driver energy but he’s better at restraining his comments than Arthur
That being said, if your driving is shitty, he will send you Vibes
Doesn’t bother much with searching for music and just ends up playing a few hour long YouTube mixes when it’s his turn for the radio
It’s either that, or Mexican radio for 2 hours (and he will sing along)
The only people who don’t complain about this are Charles and Arthur
Probably the only one out of all of them to make the gang go to an actual restaurant during his rest stop
It’s the first real meal any of them have had in like, three days, and suddenly they all feel better
They refuse to admit it, though
Clips his nails out the window at some point
Ties a bandana around his eyes and uses it as a sleep mask
*insert that picture of the guy with his face mask over his eyes on an airplane*
Also probably uses the bandana to block out the smell of farts when it gets especially stinky
Would he pee in a bottle? - He doesn’t want to, but his logic is that if everyone is doing it, why shouldn’t he?
Sean
His driving speed is normal but his driving skills are… Bad
He just isn’t paying attention honestly
Too busy talking
Probably tries to text and drive
Arthur takes away his phone after that
Also, did someone say road rage?
When it’s his turn for music, only plays nasty pop and rap
It’s fine at first, but the fourth time he plays “I Cry” by Flo Rida or “New Body” by Kanye and Nicki Minaj, everyone gets mad
Only takes rest stops at gas stations
And takes literally the longest stops out of all them
Probably spends the whole time telling the gas station cashier about how annoying everyone is
Everyone is like “kasjdfkhd” because they think he’s the annoying one and they’ve been waiting to leave for like ten minutes
Don’t sit next to him because he will sweat on you
If you share your drink with him, 50% chance he’ll backwash in it
When he’s not driving, he’s watching Tik Toks without headphones (if Arthur has given his phone back, that is)
Would he pee in a bottle? - Without hesitation
Bonus:
While the boys are all off fighting, Ms. Grimshaw packed the girls a picnic that they get to enjoy at a nice, camping rest stop
Molly speeds like the devil
She’s like Hosea, if not worse
Tilly made everyone a different playlist and they all take turns listening to them
Karen isn’t allowed to drive because she spiked her water bottle before leaving
Also isn’t allowed the aux cord because she will play inappropriate music or meme songs
Sadie pumps the gas and chooses all of the snacks for everyone
It’s a mixture of healthy treats and candy
Jack is the Squidward wearing sunglasses while sunbathing meme when John asks if he wants to ride “with the boys”

“Listen. There is a ball, being hosted tonight. A woman wants to find a husband for her daughter, so dress your best.”
A man opened his mouth to interject, only to be stopped by Tommy, “It’s only to blend in, so remember, we are not going to be there for women, we will be there there on Peaky business. Got it?” The men nodded as Tommy picked up his hat and put it on, walking out the door of the gambling shop.
He was right, the ball did happen, and there really was a woman in need of a lover. The Peaky Blinders walked through the front doors to the mansion, greeted by a maid who guided them to the ballroom. Tommy nodded, signaling that it was time to be serious, before they took their separate ways.
John walked along the crowd, people gathered around something he couldn’t see. From the murmurs he heard, it was the girl Tommy had spoken about. He smiled with amusement, rushing past people to get a glimpse and possibly try his luck.
There she was, the beautiful Y/n everyone had spoken of. John found himself staring, mouth agape and eyes widened to full circles. As the man turned Y/n, she caught John’s eyes, inhaling sharply and keeping her eyes on him until the end of the dance.
“Who else would try for the lady’s hand?” A man queried from behind her. John stepped up, taking off his hat and wiping his sweaty palms on his shirt.
He took her hand in his and began to dance with her. It felt like he’d been dancing forever, somehow knowing the exact moves to make. Tommy wouldn’t be happy to stumble upon John and the lady of the party dancing around when he was supposed to be doing his job.
The way she looked at him after his panicky thoughts began to appear; It was like she could read his mind.
“Nervous?” She whispered into his ear as they continued to dance, perfectly in sync and timed with the rhythm.
“A little. What about you? Must be kind of awkward dancing with all these strangers in front of even more strangers.” He smirked when she started to giggle quietly, the sound making his heart skip a beat. “You’re like a princess, ya know?”
“How so?”
He spun her around, “Well, for one, you’re gorgeous, and for two, this whole situation. You in a rich house, an expensive gown, as well as having a mother who wants to find a suitor for you. Tell me that isn’t ‘princess-like’.”
“I suppose you’re right, Mr...”
Her arms draped over his shoulders as his found her waist. They looked into each other’s eyes slowly, a spark in their hearts and butterflies, rather large ones at that, in their stomachs.
“Shelby. John Shelby, but for you, miss, it’s John.”
“Please, call me Y/n.”
“Pleasure to meet you,” John smirked, “angel.”
Y/n chuckled softly, spinning around and letting him dip her, “While meeting you is also a pleasure, my mother wouldn’t approve of a Shelby being here, not to mention marrying me off. She will learn to deal, however. Unless that was not your intentions when you had asked me to dance?”
They stopped, John finding her eyes again with a type of smile he swore he never thought he’d have. “Your mother said whoever wanted to take your hand in marriage is to dance with you, correct?” She nodded, confused by his questioning. “I danced with you, did I not?”
She smiled widely, a blush spreading across her cheeks. The two ignored the crowd, feeling as if they didn’t exist in the little world they were in, leaning in for a harsh kiss before a loud voice pushed them away. Anger filled the voice. It felt almost like a slap in the face, or a blade being stabbed into one’s heart.
“And just what are you doing to my daughter, Shelby boy?” Her mother boomed from the top of the staircase. She spoke John’s last name with venom and hatred, like most who knew of the Peaky Blinders did.
“Mother. He danced with me. Whomever I marry, it’s my choice, and I pick him.”
“A Shelby?” Her mother drawled. “You can’t be serious-”
“Yes.” She reached behind for John’s hand, holding it tightly and standing her ground. “John Shelby. Mother, he did what you asked for, and my heart did the rest. Please...” Y/n pleaded.
Her mother pressed her lips together, studying the two carefully. A few seconds later, she lifted her eyes behind them and widened her now terrified orbs. The plot twist was almost ironic, had it not been horrifying for everyone there.
“Look out!” Someone shrieked. Gasps and similar yells began to fill the room.
John pushed Y/n out of the way, taking a bullet to his stomach, and landed on the floor. Y/n’s eyes flicked to the gunman her mother had seen after he shot John, hurt and anger filling them with tears. Blood soaked through his shirt, red soaking a small part of his lower abdomen, as he coughed. Y/n scrambled over to him, tears falling down her soft cheeks and choked up sobs leaving her mouth.
Some guests held back the gunner until a copper, who’d been invited, grabbed him and escorted him out, leaving Y/n with John and the guests, and her mother, to watch. Y/n sat in the middle of the ballroom, still, crying and pleading with John.
“John! No!” She cupped his face, slowly bringing him onto her lap. Moments prior, she had received nothing but coughing as a response and it was only beginning to scare her even more. “Breathe! It’s going to be okay...just breathe...please...”
“Princess,” he coughed with a lazy smile, “You stood up to your mum... I guess um... I guess your bravery really took my breath away, huh?”
Y/n rolled her eyes, wiping tears away from her own face with a small chuckle of relief. His joke, though kind of dumb, especially to make at this moment, caught her off-guard. She helped him up, one of her hands joining the one of his that covered his wound as his other arm slung over her shoulders.
“Mr. Shelby. You- you saved my daughter’s life.”
“Guess I kinda uh,” his head titled down to their hands, covering and putting pressure on his bleeding torso, then looked back up at her, “forgot to think of my own while doing so.”
Mrs. L/n’s eyes scanned over the reddened part of his shirt, leaning over and whispering to the man next to her, the man rushing down to aid John, before talking to them again.
“That is something I will forever be grateful for. Thank you, John, for saving my darling girl. As a thank you, I can only agree to what has been asked of me, as it seems to mean quite a lot to you and her. You may take my daughter’s hand in marriage, and we will welcome you and your family into our home” John smiled, “for as long as she is still alive and thriving.”
“You will not regret this, madam, I promise.” He tried his best to be formal, despite it not being his particular expertise. Plus, the fact that he was still very much in pain didn’t help prevent him from cursing like a sailor a whole lot.
“I better not.” She had a maid escort the remaining guests out of her home and collect John’s siblings, giving her time with the Shelby family and her daughter. “You Shelbys are different from what I had in mind. I suppose some chances are worth taking, no matter the risks. Oh! Yes, one more thing-”
Tommy lit his cigarette, “And what may that be?” he quirked a brow as he spoke.
“Did you get what you came for? Although you are different, I can still tell you came here for business. Please, finish what you came to do, it’s the least I can do in addition to my thanks.”
Mrs. L/n walked next to Tommy and smiled at her daughter, who was holding John’s arm as they began to walk out of her home, “Please, tell him to take care of her, and make sure he does as he promises. That’s all I ask of him.”
“I promise, Mrs. L/n, no harm will come to your daughter. I know him well, and my brother seems to have fallen for her. You can trust him, he’d give his life for that girl, and it looks like she’d just about do the same.”
“Talk about love at first sight,” Arthur chuckled from behind his brother and Y/n’s mother.
“Love at first sight indeed.”

The Odd Fellow
Tumblr media
Summary: Father-to-be John meets an out of place man who asks a very odd question about his future.
Word Count: 1095
John felt guilty that he was even here. Abigail had been sick for weeks now and here he was, at a bar downing a whiskey. He would never forgive himself if something happened to her and the baby while he was out, but he couldn’t spend one more minute in camp. Maybe he was a coward for not being able to take sitting in their tent while she cried in pain and agony. Scratch that, he knew he was a coward because he had already thought about leaving. The thought seemed utopian, almost. Running away from commitment, from the baby, from everyone and everything that had ever depended on him. He could be sipping drinks at the beach with a lady on each arm if he played his scams just the right way. But no, he couldn’t do that. That wasn’t the right thing to do and besides, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself long enough to get to the “sipping expensive beverages and screwing whores” stage of his dream. Despite knowing what the right thing to do was and that he was going to do it, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t meant to be a father. He’d liked Isaac, had played with him for hours on end when he was alive, but that wasn’t nearly the same thing as being a father himself. He had laughed at Arthur when Eliza got pregnant, saying that he was a fool for getting a girl pregnant. He supposed his karma had caught up to him now. John had all these conflicting emotions and couldn’t let them be seen at camp. He cared for Abigail deeply, wanted her to be okay, but couldn’t stand sitting by her side while she constantly vomited and fainted all day.
“Get me another, Joe.” John slurred. His thoughts were barely even making sense to him anymore, and that was the way he liked it.
The bartender poured him another drink but looked at John seriously.
“Last one, John. Don’t need you going home to your lady too drunk.”
“I don’t think I want to go home today.” John laughed.
“Well you’re going to. We all know she’s sick, she needs you there. But it’s not safe for you to come back to her a drunken fool”
John rolled his eyes. Since when were bartenders supposed to talk back to you? John also didn’t like what he thought Joe to be accusing him of.
“What, you think just because I’m drunk I’m gonna go back and hit her or something? I ain’t ever done that. She hits ME.”
Before Joe could answer him, the bar door flew open. John immediately turned his head to see who had just entered the bar. It was the middle of the day and it was odd for another man to come day drinking at Joe’s place. Hell, the man only really kept it open this early for John. What was more curious than the fact that there was another customer coming to the bar was this new man’s getup. He was a pale, mustached man in a black top hat and suit. Surely, a man dressed in such attire should be in an important business meeting at this time of day, not a small town bar. Strange.
At first, John ignored the man. He wasn’t in the mood to be belittled by a man who surely was a well to do businessperson. But after his last drink settled in his system, he suddenly was telling the man his whole life story, from being what Arthur always called “a feral child” to what he had become, a deadbeat dad to be. He explained to the man that in his heart (he surprised himself by even admitting he had one of those) he loved Abigail, but could never be what she wanted him to be. He wasn’t going to leave her before she had the baby, but once the kid was actually here, John was scared he might take off. John wasn’t normally a “spill your guts” type drunk, so this was very odd behavior for him. It was almost like this man had somehow forced all this information out of him without even asking.
“It seems like you’re choosing between happiness and a second generation.” the man in the top hat told John dryly.
“You could say that again, friend. But I ain’t got much of a choice.” John replied in a solemn tone.
“Well, what if you did? Happiness, or a second generation?”
This enraged John. What was this man trying to suggest? There was already a baby, his baby. There was nothing to choose between. And if the man was suggesting… he wasn’t even going to go there. If he thought John would do that, he had him all wrong.
“Listen buddy, I don’t think you heard me right. I already HAVE a baby. It’s just in my woman’s stomach, er womb or whatever she said, I don’t know. The point is, it’s there. There’s no choice to make and you’re a dumbass if you think there is.”
John wouldn’t look at the man in the top hat anymore and it seemed Joe was about the ask the man to leave before the man quietly said, “Just answer the question.”
John got up out of his seat and started walking to the door. “The second generation, asshole.” he spat, before walking out the door.
Abigail was very excited to see John when he came back to camp. She ran up to him and gave him a big hug, ignoring the smell of whiskey coming from him, something she didn’t often do. John was a bit perplexed, she’d been bed bound for months.
“What’s gotten into you?” he asked before she pulled him into a kiss, even though the taste of whiskey made her sick these days.
“I feel so much better. I kept praying and praying that the baby and I would be okay and it looks like the Lord finally answered my prayers. I think everything is gonna be alright now, He’s watching over us.”
John smiled and said, “Well ain’t that nice, sweetheart” before leading her back to their tent. But in the back of his mind he kept thinking of the man at the bar and his question. Surely this was just a coincidence?
“Grimshaw and Tilly did the ring test today. It spun in a circle, that means we’re having a baby boy! Little John Marston Jr.!” Abigail practically squealed.

what pets do you think the VDL boys would have in a modern setting? and what do u think the pets’ names would be? also i love you *kisses you on the cheek*
*swoons* I love you too anon <3
Arthur
Arthur is 100% a dog person. I could definitely see him volunteering at animal shelters and dog pounds at the weekend too.
It was when Arthur was helping at the dog pound, he saw a timid border collie. It took a while for the dog to start trusting Arthur but soon they became best friends and Arthur adopted her.
I think Arthur would give his dog a common but very cute name, like Maggie, Daisy or Bailey.
Dutch
Dutch wanted to get a pet but he was always unsure of what to get. Thankfully, Trelawny suggested the perfect pet for Dutch.
Dutch loves his pet parrot. He loves it when the parrot sits on his shoulder and watches the world go by. The best thing about having a pet parrot is that it can talk. Now whenever Dutch goes on a rant or says a speech, the parrot squawks "I have faith” or “nice plan”.
After going through a series of names, Dutch settled on naming his parrot after a historical figure. For a while he thought about calling him Caesar but in the end, he went with Shakespeare.
John
John adores his pet. He always wants to bring his pet with him everywhere but he knows that’s a bad idea. He did it once but he nearly dropped the bowl of water which would’ve been a disaster.
John has a pet goldfish that he loves dearly. He doesn’t have to do too much to look after it which makes it the perfect pet for John.
Unfortunately John isn’t that creative when it came to picking a name for his goldfish. Nevertheless, he chose a strong, caring and overall immaculate name... yes, John calls the goldfish John.
To stop any confusion, a lot of people call the goldfish Johnathon.
Charles
Charles was only going to get a simple, small pet. Nothing too extreme. When he saw the little guinea pigs in the pet store, he knew he had to buy one
...but he couldn’t just buy one. Guinea pigs are known for getting very lonely if they don’t have a companion so Charles had to buy 2... but he couldn’t pick out which 2 he wanted so he ended up buying the 5 guinea pigs they had in the store.
To make life easier, Charles decided to name them all after trees. So now Charles lives with Oak, Maple, Ash, Birch and Elm.
Bill
Bill loves his two pet mice. He doesn’t understand why some people don’t like mice, they’re surprisingly cute. Bill even made them little hats and coats.
He tried to train them to do tricks but they got too preoccupied sniffing and climbing things to actually try and do the tricks.
Bill’s a bit embarrassed when he tells you the names of his mice. He mumbles as he holds them up “This one’s called Sprinkles and this is Mr Fluffles”.
Javier
Javier knew exactly what kind of dog he wanted to buy. Javier wanted to find the biggest, fluffiest dog possible. It was his ultimate dream.
Finally, Javier bought a Samoyed dog, which is very fluffy and bright white in colour. Javier’s favourite thing to do is take naps with his dog because of how comfy he is. The dog’s kinda like a living blanket.
Javier named his dog Rio and bought about 4 different dog collars, a dog bed, 2 food bowls and a bow that all have Rio written on them.
Micah
Micah isn’t an animal person. He hates dogs, fish are useless and he dislikes all rodents. Animals are not his thing... until one day, Micah found a cat. They stared at each other for a moment and in that moment, Micah felt the cat look deep into his soul.
From that day on, Micah brings the cat everywhere with him. It’s his best friend and Micah truly feels like the cat understands him.
But Micah won’t give the cat a name because then it’ll be obvious he’s gotten attached to the creature. Instead Micah simply refers to it as ‘the cat’.
Sean
Sean doesn’t understand why people spend so much money on buying a pet. All he did to get his pet was go outside and dig around in some dirt.
Sean was very proud of his pet earthworm. He named him Tim and carried him around to show everyone.
Everything was going fine until about 2 hours later, when Sean lost him. He asked Jack to draw some missing posters but unfortunately Tim was never found. Sean still has hope though and believes Tim ran off to Canada to start a family.

How will she cope in a world that’s not her own?
MASTERLIST  CHAPTER 10  CHAPTER 12
A/N: This chapter doesn’t have a lot of Tommy in it. This is the beginning of Aliena’s detachment from the Shelby Family. Thomas will be mentioned frequently, but he most likely have the bare minimum of involvement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s been abar two weeks since Tom killed Billy Kimber. Everything is...different. I can’t put it into words. Me place within the family is undefined. Since John’s married, I’m no longer needed to take care of the kids. Now, I knew this but he and Esme made it official.
I wasn’t to be ‘round unless they called.
I understood. I mean Esme is a new wife and they are in their honeymoon stage. Going at it like rabbits. I felt bad for the kids. I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I only see them when they come ‘round the house.
Luckily, they are warming up to Esme. There wasn’t any bad blood in the first place, but— you just never know when a new wife comes into the picture.
I was still teaching Finn, but since I didn’t have any other students, I was really grilling into him. He’s beginning to hate school even more. It’s just that I practically have nothing to do!
I don’t have to clean two places anymore. I just clean the main house and I kept on top of me tasks all the time, so that means I practically don’t have anything to do! That’s where Finn comes in. I assigned him more homework and reading, but he doesn’t want anything to do with it.
Especially after doing Kimber over, the boy idolizes Tom too much.
So, here I am at me special place just relaxing. Letting the wind go through me hair was always welcomed. I was just swinging and adamantly trying not to think. I took in me surroundings. But, that soon came to an end when I started to get nauseous.
I put me feet down and stopped. I didn’t get up, though. I just sat there, silently. I reach down and started running me hands through the tips of the grass. I sang to meself “I just want to be the one you love.” I sang ‘til even that gave me a headache.
I sighed and stopped singing. I sat up straight and hopped off the swing. I took two steps back and just appreciated the nice breeze. I tucked a piece of hair that was in me face and started walking back home.
It didn’t feel nice walking by meself for so long. I mean it was nice at first, but then I started getting paranoid. Worried that I would just get pinched off the side of the road. Only when me feet hit the familiar cobblestone, did I feel safe.
Safe under the Peaky Blinders’ protection. What if I’m no longer needed? Do they just give me money and send me on me way? Do I just go and mooch off of Cassie? I mean, technically, didn’t they have that right?
I stopped walking and took the time to massage me temples.
“Are you all right, love?” asked a concerned woman.
I picked up me head and put on a smile. It was fake, of course, but polite. “Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for asking.”
We exchanged smiles and nods and I went on me way. The second I wasn’t facing her, me smile fell. I was starting to feel lethargic again. That was also a bad sign.
By the time I reached the front door, I was feeling a lot of things at once. I was annoyed, tired, hungry, and lost. I sighed again while opening the door. It was probably abar six in the evening. I took the pins out of me hat and hung it up. Then, I had to put those same pins in me mouth as I took off me coat. I hung that up as well.
I took those pins from me mouth and placed them in a pocket in me skirt. I dusted off me hands and walked into the kitchen. I was gonna start making dinner. Decided shepherd's pie would do everyone some good.
As I was cooking Arthur came in. How did I know it was him, you ask? He brings along the stench of sweat and booze, of course.
“Whatcha cookin’ there, Ali?” Arthur asked before he took a seat down at the table. He took off his cap and smooth down his hair.
I smiled. “I’m cooking some shepherd’s pie.”
“Ah, thank fuck! When’s it gonna be ready?”
I shrugged. “Not long now. Are you gonna stay or do I need to hound you down like the rest of your family?”
He sniffed. “Nah, I’ll be in me office.” The chair scraped against the floor as he got up, and then he left the room.
I turned back ‘round and grumbled to meself, “So, I’m chasing ya down like the rest of them.” I took a step back and leaned on the table. I rubbed me forehead and exhaled audibly. Eventually, I sat down ‘til the scran was ready.
I got three plates, put two forks in me pocket, and cut out three slices for the family members I knew where in the shop. I took only two, though. Using me bum, I opened the doors to the shop and heard the bustling of men.
Not men looking to lay bets, but employees shifting to count up bets and such. I walked past them all. Esme was sitting at a desk as was Polly. I walked up to Polly.
“Dinner, Pol.” I said, rather monotone.
She looked up at me ‘n smiled. “Thank you, love. Leave it there.”
I nodded and set it down at the edge of her desk. As I took a fork out of me pocket, I asked. “Happen to know where Tommy is?” I set it on the plate.
She picked up her head again, but was gazing somewhere else in thought. Her finger pressed against her lip. “I think he’s doing some business. Talking up plans with the architect that’s designing the company headquarters. Better leave him a slice for him to get on his own. Don’t go chasing him at this time of night.”
I nodded and walked over to Arthur’s office while placing a fork on his plate. I knocked and he told me to come in.
“Here ya are!” I said as I placed his food beside him.
He made some breathy noise of excitement before saying, “About damn time. I was about to chew me arm and leg off. Thanks, Ali.”
A quick smile flashed on me face and I said, “Your welcome” before leaving. It turns out I had another slice to cut. So, I served John and Esme some dinner. Finn was out and abar. Polly said to just let him be. That he was being a child, so I just ate by meself at the kitchen table.
While I was eating, the phone was ringing off the hook. I rushed to it and answered.
“Hello, this is 6 Watery Lane?”
“A call from suite 226 at the Ritz Hotel. A Ms. Cassiopeia Johnson for Ms. Aliena Welsh. Do you accept?”
“Yes, I accept.”
“Connecting you now.”
I sighed and twirled me finger ‘round to wire.
“Ali! Are you free tonight?” Cassie shouted through the phone.
I clutched me forehead. “Yeah and every other night. Why?”
“Feel like going to a party?”
Me eyes widened and anxiety shot through me body. I looked ‘round as if I was going to get in trouble for ‘aving this conversation.
“I- uh. I’m not sure, Cass.”
She groaned exaggeratedly. “Come on, Aliena. You said it yourself, you have nights off now. So, let’s go to a party.”
I scoffed. “What kind of party?”
“Don’t worry! It’s casual. The girls and I are going down to the London clubs, and we wanted you to come. So, don’t wear any of those extravagant dresses Angie bought you. Wear something you can sweat in.”
I rolled me eyes while wearing a smirk. “Cass, you and me have different definitions of clothes we can sweat in, but yeah— I get your meaning. Okay, let me just make sure, okay? Stay on the phone.”
“Okay, hurry up.”
I left the phone off the hook and sped walked back into the shop. I walked up to Polly.
“Hey, Polly. Is it alright if I go out?”
Her head snapped up and her face contorted in confusion. “Go out? With who?”
“Me friends. Cassie, Angie, Tina. I’ve told ya abar them before.”
Her eyes darted from side to side then she nodded. “All right. Before careful, love, all right. Don’t be out too late. You get into any trouble call Tommy or the house. Be safe.” She stood up, smooth me hair down, and kissed me cheek.
I couldn’t help the grin on me face as I thanked her and ran back to the phone.
“She said yes! I’m gonna go get ready.”
Cassie squealed into the phone. “Yay! We are going to have so much fun!”
I hung up the phone and raced into me room. I slammed the door behind me and threw open me closet. I took out any “party” dresses that I had hung up.
I wanted to look absolutely breathtaking.
Between abar five different dresses, I decided on a navy blue dress. Your typical 1920’s design.
Tumblr media
I quickly threw off me previous clothes and even me undergarments. I went to me drawers and found black stockings and a garter belt to match. I had to go through a different drawer to get a black bra. When I finished putting those on, I scrambled to stand in front of me mirror.
I had to back up a lot to see me whole body in it. I stared for a while. Looking for imperfections. I turned to me side and pinched me stomach. I had a little bump, but I didn’t find meself demeaning meself as usual. I felt...sexy.
I squealed at meself and bent over into meself. Me hair flying as I did so. After I had me little moment, I stood back up, me hair flipping back, and kept me hand over me mouth. I dropped it and went to put on the dress.
Once I had it on, I sat at me desk in front of me mirror and began to do me makeup. I went more for a blue smokey eye to match me dress.  I didn’t add any contour or blush, but I added highlight and a pink nude lip. I blew meself a kiss and got up. I walked back to me closet and bent down to open the drawer at the bottom.
I picked out me black purse. I opened its doors and took out me four-inch black heels. I put them on and hiked the purse up me shoulder. Then, I was stuck waiting for Cassie’s honk.
As I waited, I kept brushing out me hair. I knew I would look like the odd women out with hair as long as mine, but I didn’t care. I liked how I looked. With me finger, I touched up me lipstick slightly when I heard that infamous honking.
A shit-eating grin spread across me face and I raced out the door. When I made it out the door, Cassie was standing there waiting for me.
We shrieked when we saw each other and ran into each other’s arms. We laughed as we swayed each other.
“Oooh, I’m so glad you decided to come.” Cassie sighed and pushed me back a little while maintaining our hug. “Look at you! Oh, Angie, Tina! Look at our baby. All grown up.”
She used me shoulders to guide me in front of the car. Angie clapped before bringing her hands over her mouth. Tina was just all smiles.
I was so hyped up that I couldn’t stop the ugly smile on me face. While fanning meself, I begged. “Guys, stop! Let’s just get this show on the road!”
I climbed into the car and Cassie followed suit.
Their hands were all over trying to inspect all of me outfit. I fought off their hands, eventually.
“Okay, okay, enough! Which club are we going to?”
Cassie looked at Angie as did Tina. Angie made eye contact with the both of them before she bugged out her eyes.
“What?” She shouted then sighed, defeatedly. “I mean, we can start with the one we frequent the most. It’s real nice there. Shiny.” Angie said that last part in a childish voice while looking at me.
I glared at her before grumbling, “Shut it.”
I may have disclosed me affliction for shiny things.
The rest of the ride was filled with mindless chatter. Just catching up with what has happened in our lives.
Tina shuffled over to me eventually and took me hand in hers. She was playing with me nails.
“How are things with you and Thomas?” She asked me softly. Her eyes flicked up to mine before looking back at me nails.
I hummed while sighing deeply. “Well, we’re not the same. He’s just so much busier now. It’s a win in itself that we’re not at odds with each other, but I wish it was like before Grace. We were so close. Well, I was closer to him than he was with any of his family members.” I leaned closer to her ear and whispered. “We slept in the same bed for Christ’s sake.”
She gasped while looking into me eyes, horrified.
I knew she wasn’t gonna take it well. I gave her a sheepish smile. “It was nothing indecent. I swear! Thomas has trouble sleeping because of the war. I put him to sleep while talking to him and sometimes he would talk to me too.” I looked off thinking abar all the moments we shared.
Tina said nothing for a while ‘til she asked. “So, are you two in a good place or not?”
I rolled me eyes. “If you’re looking for a direct answer then, yes. Yes, we’re in a good place.”
Her cheeks turned red and she gave me a sheepish smile. I softly scoffed.
The car stopped and we all hopped off. I followed them as they walked into the club. The doormen greeted them and opened the door for us.
Angie clapped her hands and turned toward me. “What are you drinking?” She asked me.
I shrugged me shoulders. “I’ll drink whatever youse drink.”
She rolled her eyes before she turned back ‘round and toward the bar. I mocked her expression as she walked away. Cassie linked me arms with hers and began to lead me to a table.
We sat down and I set down me purse. Cassie did the same, but dug through her purse for a ciggie. She propositioned me for one and I took one.
“Wow! Look at you!” Cassie said with her jaw dropped, a smile fighting for its place. “Just going all out tonight, are you?” She then cackled to herself.
I giggled at her as I held the stick between me teeth. I fished through me purse and found me lighter. I’m not familiar with the types of lighters, but if I had to describe this one— it would be a lift arm. I think it was anyway. There was a time where I did research types of lighters for a story, but I wasn’t expecting to remember on the fly.
Oh, how I miss the internet!
I flicked the wheel and inhaled. I pushed the arm back down, snuffing out the flame then tossed it on the table. I took the ciggie from me lips and let out the smoke.
“So,” I began to ask. “What do you guys usually do?” I looked ‘round saw people dancing, talking. The room was super loud. I was, in a way, used to it, but it hurt me ears at the same time.
The dances were so old, to me. They danced like animals, but I saw a couple of tangos. Some were doing the Charleston.
I would never experience modern clubs. Grinding against strangers and jumping like nobody was watching. Loud music pumping through speakers. Hell, club music! Electronic music, or for Christ’s sake— music with words! I would never get to listen to the music that got me blood pumping and made me feel like the most attractive woman in the room.
Cassie chuckled before she puffed out a cloud of smoke. “Well, first, we have a drink or two. To take off the edge, then we dance.”
I looked over at Tina who nodded and smiled. I scoffed playfully before blowing raspberries. Angie came over, a bottle and drinks in hand, and a ciggie hanging off her lips. Tina shot up from her seat and rushed to help her.
Cassie and I sneak a glance at each other. Though, in all honesty, the interaction was innocent. They distributed the drinks and I instantly went to drink when me hand was smack.
Angie had her eyebrows furrowed at me in a glare. I looked back at her confused.
“Let’s make a toast.” She announced over the blaring jazz music. “A toast for Aliena’s first outing!”
Everyone made mischievous smiles at me, I returned it with a mocking one as I tilted me head from side to side.
Cassie giggled. “May she drunkenly hook up with a stranger and forget all about Mr. Thomas Shelby.”
While I didn’t want Cassie’s toast to come true, exactly, I still clinked glasses with the lot of them. We, collectively, tipped our heads back and downed our glasses.
I groaned at the taste as did Tina. Angie and Cassie both whooped in excitement.
“More! More!” Cassie chanted as she grabbed the bottle and starting pouring us another round.
I took another puff of me ciggie. I could see I didn’t have many left. Left it burning for too long. I shrugged me shoulders as I took another inhale. I could always bum one off of them.
Two more glasses later, I was dragged to the dance floor by Cassie. I tried begging her to let me go, but she wouldn’t. I tried telling her that all I knew how to do was sway, but she said that she would teach me.
And, boy, did she try!
I swear I was getting it all wrong, but she was swearing that I was doing great.
Our hands were entwined and I shouted. “I’m not doing it right, Cassie!”
She shook her head as she brought me in so close that our lips were practically touching. “You’re dancing better than me. Stop thinking about it, Ali. Let yourself go.”
I wanted to. I really wanted to, but how could I lose meself to jazz music! How was I supposed to lose meself to jazz music?
I cringed. I literally cringed. I took a deep breath and cradled me forehead. “Cass,” I shouted. “Let’s get a drink, yeah?”
She pouted and her face contorted in frustration, but she followed me back to the table nonetheless. At said table, was Angie and Tina along with two new gentlemen friends. Angie looked like she was having a good time while Tina— not so much.
Angie noticed us first. “You guys are back already?” She asked.
Cassie nodded. “Yeah. Aliena wanted another drink.” Her tone, somewhat snappy.
I resisted the urge to roll me eyes as I grabbed the bottle and poured meself a glass.
I heard one of the men clear their throat. Angie sighed before announcing their presence. I gave them each a polite smile and nodded. I didn’t acknowledge them. They weren’t me type anyhow.
I tipped back abar two more drinks before I tapped Cassie’s shoulder and nodded back to the dance floor. Her face lit up in glee as she took me head and we ran to the dance floor.
I felt the booze lower me inhibitions. I listened to her words and let meself go. I was in a mix between the music in me head and the music that thundered in the club. I was in a mix between the dances Cassie taught me and the dances I knew from back home.
I ran me fingers through me hair and kept them as I swayed me waist. I let me hands roam me body as I did a body roll. I swayed me hips from side to side. I let me eyes flutter close and I embraced the music in me head.
I only stopped when I felt someone’s hand creep on me shoulder. I twirled ‘round to face the man who dared lay a hand on me.
He smirked and shouted. “Mind, if I joined you?”
I looked at him up and down then scoffed. “Fuck off!”
His eyes widened and he left. I watched him leave. I walked closer to Cassie and pulled her to me. She giggled and then I turned ‘round. I grabbed her hands and made them roam me body as I grinded into her.
Eventually, she got into the groove of it.
“Men are looking at us.” She whispered in me ear.
I smirked and reopened me eyes. I titled me head back and whispered into her ear. “Let them.”
We danced for a little while more. I could see and feel all of these eyes on us. I felt so ethereal yet scared at the same time. All it took was one macho man. One macho man to try and demand that either us are entitled to give him a dance.
So, with thought like that plaguing me mind— I stopped dancing and pulled Cassie back to the table.
I hadn’t even noticed that women were glaring at us as well ‘til we were walking back to our table.
We sat down while panting. I felt so hot. Angie chuckled at the sight of us.
“Where’s tweedle dee and dum?” I asked as I pinched a ciggie from one of their cases.
Angie scoffed. “Hopefully somewhere else. Fucking pricks!”
I inhaled as I lit it up. I knocked down the arm as I asked. “The fuck happened?”
Angie’s eyes darted to Tina’s, who was looking down at the table.
Tina sat up straighter and I could see her gulp. Her eyes kept shifting to me from the table. “The bastard put his hand up me dress.”
I felt rage surge me. I held me ciggie between two fingers as I shot up. Me hands slammed on the table. “Where’s the fucking bastard? I fuckin’ kill ‘em.”
Angie scoffed. “Calm down, Aliena. Already embarrassed them as much as I could.”
I looked over at Angie and gave her a satisfied smile. If it was Angie, then yeah— she made them wish they’d never been born.
Cassie stroked Tina’s arm before saying, “How about you and Angie go and have your turn on the dance floor. Ali and I will hold down the fort.”
Angie looked at Tina who just nodded. They got up from their chairs and walked onto the dance floor. I exhaled smoke through me nose and looked over at Cassie.
She smiled at me. “What was that? On the floor.”
I smirked. “I let myself go.”
She giggled while tipping her head back. “Now, if Mr. Thomas Shelby knew you could dance like that. I bet he would be the one on his knees for ya. Not the other way around.”
I chortled at that. The bad thing that once she said it, I could imagine it. I could see Thomas Shelby on all fours for me as I sat in his chair at his future office with me legs wide open. But the thing is, I didn’t want to be the one in control. It’s just a personal preference.
Cassie slid a glass to me and I happily took a drink. I tsked after.
Cassie was staring at me with this questionable look in eyes.
“What?” I asked with a giggle.
She squinted before sighing. “Why won’t you make the first move? You’re about to turn 18 and that woman isn’t in the picture anymore. Why not just,” She began to flail her hands ‘round herself. “Make the first move!”
I glanced away as I thought abar how to answer her. I sat up straighter and rested me back against the chair. “I won’t ever make the first move because I’m afraid of rejection. I’ve been rejected by all the males in my life that I have asked out. In my mind, I can’t convince myself that he will be different. Why? Because I’m shielding myself from feeling that embarrassment and sadness that would come from a rejection.
Plus, like you said. Grace isn’t in the picture anymore, but that was like two weeks ago, Cassie! If he accepted me right now, I wouldn’t be able to perceive that other than him using me to be his rebound.”
I took the ciggie from me lips and titled me head back as I exhaled. Then, I picked up me glass and downed it.
Cassie tapped the table with her fingernail before sighing and looking away. I started bobbing me head to enjoy meself. Cassie’s face contorted into something devilish. I squinted me eyes in suspicion.
“What’re you looking at?” I turned ‘round and saw two men sitting at the bar. Me eyes widened and I just zipped back ‘round. I shook me head. “You better not even-!”
It was too late as I saw the shit-eating grin on her face as she looked at me. I blew raspberries while rolling me eyes.
His name was Christian and he was an accountant. He was attractive, for sure. But, we weren’t hitting it off like that. I pretended to be engaged, but anything he was saying was going in one ear and out the other.
I nursed me bevvy as I dragged me fingertip along the rim of the glass. When I picked up me head ‘n saw Angie and Tina walking back with more than a pep in their step, I swear I thanked God.
“Hey!” I shouted while effectively cutting off the dude. “How was it? Your feets aching yet?”
Angie scoffed before her tipped toward Christian. She stared at him even harder while arching her neck forward. “Can you get up? You see women coming back from the dance floor and you don’t give your seat up! What kind of man are you?”
I looked away as I slapped me hand over me mouth. The guy stuttered and scrambled out of the chair. Angie just held up her hand and began collecting her stuff.
“I, for one, am tired of this place. Let’s go, girls.” Angie announced.
‘Say less.’ I thought.
I already had me stuff in me purse, so I got up and shuffled toward Tina. I stroked her arm and asked. “Are you alright, hun?”
She nodded while hiking up her purse on her shoulder. “Just want to get out of here. Too many eyes.”
I looked ‘round and sure enough, she was right. Some men had the balls to keep on looking. I rolled me eyes as it contorted in disgust.
“Yeah, we’ll leave soon.”
Cassie flirted with that guy ‘til we left. She groaned exaggeratedly as she raked her fingers through her hair. “What the fuck, guys? I was still talking to him.”
I scoffed. “Don’t worry, Cass. I’m sure you’ll find someone else to satisfy you at the next bar.”
Angie nodded. “Yep. Looks like scum raided that bar tonight.”
By the end of the night, I was a fucking mess. I was stumbling ‘round and me speech was slurred. I was conscious of everything. I felt like it anyway, but something was telling me that I would forget bits and pieces in the morning.
Oh! Cassie did indeed get her scratch itched. She had sex in the restroom. We cheered and laughed at her for it. Turns out that Tina and I were more alike than I originally thought. Though, I believe the reason for that was because neither of us were on the prowl. Angie and Cass, on the other hand, were.
So, right now, Cass was giving me a ride back home.
I stuck me head out of the car and let the wind whip through me hair. I howled while extending me arm out. I could hear giggles in the car. When I felt content, I went back into the car. I draped over Angie and rested me head on her shoulder. I was sitting on me knees, so it worked.
I smiled, drunkenly. Angie stroked me face and whispered. “You are so beautiful. Like so beautiful. It kills me that you’re stuck in that dump of a home. If you were born into me own world, you’d be sought out by all the lords and their sons.”
I psh-ed her words while hiding me face in her arm. “Why, thank you! I think you’re quite stunning yourself.”
“Marry rich, Aliena. So, we can see each other all the time.”
We stared into each other’s eyes for a while. ‘Til I broke it by smiling and cackling. She joined in on me laughter.
The car had to stop eventually and when it did— they wouldn’t let me go!
I let all me weight go as I tried to get out of their grasps. “Let me go, you wenches!”
Cassie aw-ed. “Stay with us, Ali. Just come back into the car and sleep over!”
Tina, who was very fucking bladdered, chimed in. “Yeah, stay with us, Ali!”
I giggled while tipping me head back. “No!” I shouted. “I have work tomorrow!”
Their grip on me, eventually, loosened and I fell back on me arse. I laughed and moaned from the pain as me hand sluggishly went to soothe the pain. They laughed while crashing into each other.
“Fuck off ‘n go home!” I shouted while waving them off.
With ungraceful movements, Angie closed the car door as the other two fell back into the car. I stumbled to get back on me feet and opened the door.
I sighed and looked ‘round. It was fucking dark and nobody was there. I didn’t take a coat, so I just hung up me purse. I tried to bend over and take off me heels, but I ended up leaning forward ‘n had to catch meself.
I giggled at me actions. Then, I heaved a big sigh and raised a fist to me forehead as I winced in discomfort. I crashed into the wall on me left and debated whether or not I wanted to go into the kitchen for water ‘n bread.
I burped loudly which caused me hand to fly over me mouth and then I chuckled. But, then that feeling contorted into something bad. I ran over to the sink and held me hair back as I vomited into the sink.
I coughed and gathered all the spit in me mouth and spat it out a couple of times. I groaned as I slumped to the side.
I’m so fucking tired!
I coughed a few more times as I turned on the faucet. I let the water wash away me vomit and I scooped some water to wash away the taste in me mouth. When I was done, I stumbled back into the living room and threw meself on the couch.
I got comfortable and fell asleep.
Tumblr media
“For fuck’s sake, Aliena.” I heard someone say. I groaned and refrained from opening me eyes. I didn’t want to fucking wake up right now!
Then, I felt someone pick at the hem of me dress and suddenly, me lower half was warmer. Not a second later, arms were under me knees and neck. I furrowed me eyebrows and whined in annoyance.
They started shushing me ‘n telling me to go back to sleep. However, against their wishes— me eyes fluttered open. It was Tommy. I couldn’t stop the smile on me face from happening and as I attempted to snuggle into his chest.
“Warm.” I muttered.
He shushed me again and repeated himself.
I could feel the both of us jolt as he walked upstairs. I tried falling back to sleep, but felt like that wasn’t becoming a possibility.
Slowly, with me hand, I hovered it over his cheekbone. He looked down at me. I stared into his eyes and whispered. “So pretty.” His facial expression didn’t change.
He just repeated himself yet again before he began to walk again. I let me hand drop and I closed me eyes. I tried focusing on the sound of his breath and the way his chest rose and fell.
I let him lay me in bed and tuck me in. As he turned ‘round to leave, I shot me hand out and grasped his wrist. “Stay with me?” I asked.
Tommy looked down at me hand and slowly, he backtracked and sat down next to me. A grin broke out on me face. I tried getting comfortable all while trying to cuddle with him, but it was too awkward since all I would be doing is putting me face near his arse.
Tommy cleared his throat then said something. Me eyes fluttered open and I hummed questioningly.
“Move over.” He repeated. And so, I did.
Tommy laid down next to me and I, immediately, cuddled into his side. I didn’t even give him time to properly lay his arm ‘round me shoulders. I just sought out to comfort of his scent and warmth.
I felt his torso shake with laughter, but no sound came out.
“Now, go back to sleep, Ali.”
I was able to follow through on that order that time.
Tumblr media
When I woke up, me head was pounding, there was this god awful taste in me mouth, and I had light sensitivity. I groaned and held me head as I slowly got up. I held me head up as me elbows rested on me knees.
Then, I looked to me side. There was a note on me nightstand. I grabbed it and read it.
‘Take it easy today. - Thomas’
I rolled me eyes, but I was actually brimming with happiness on the inside.
‘So, that wasn’t a dream.’ I thought.
I got to me feet and worked on getting dressed for the day. I settled for a fuzzy, grey long-sleeved shirt, a blue pleated skirt, and stockings. These ones went all the way up to me waist. When I was done, I trudged over to me desk and worked on getting last night’s makeup off.
I’m such a better beaut! I had to use so many cotton balls and wipes. I sighed as I covered me face with me hands. I spread me hands and looked at meself in the mirror. I stretched down me face before letting it go. I let me left arm fall and I laid me head down on it.
I desperately did not want to go downstairs. But, I have a fucking job to do! I whimpered before getting up and slipping on boots. After that, I made me way downstairs.
As I turned into the kitchen, I should have known Polly would have been there. Sipping away at her mornin’ cuppa tea. She looked at me through hooded eyes. I looked away before looking back at her.
She set her cup down and leaned forward in her seat. “Well, aren’t you going to tell me how your night was?”
The only thought that went through me mind was, ‘Thank fuck!’
Tumblr media
For several nights in a row, me nights have been nothing but partying. I’ve been getting up with a hangover from the night before, finishing me duties, making dinner, eating dinner, getting ready to go out, and then Cassie would pick me up.
When I left, I would drink so much that anything would fly out of me mouth as slurs and I was stumbling into people. Then, I would be dropped off home and luckily, I have been making it to me room. Oh, but first. I would vomit in the sink, or eat bread and drink water. So far it’s been a 50/50 chance for either.
Right now, I was dancing with a bottle in me hand by meself. Being drunk and dancing was freeing. I wasn’t thinking for once and I was just letting go. I didn’t have to worry abar who I was within the Shelby clan. I wasn’t overthinking every interaction I had with everybody I came across. I wasn’t obsessing over Thomas fucking Shelby.
I brought the bottle to me lips and took a swig. Cassie looked over at me and stumbled toward me, and I did the same. With me free hand, I cradled the back of her head and brought her forehead to meet mine.
“Are you having fun?” She asked me over the blaring music.
I nodded while gigglin’. “Yeah, what about you?”
She nodded too before stealing me bottle away. I protested and reached for it, but she stomped away. She couldn’t exactly manage a run, right now. I spluttered at the sight. When I stood up straight, I felt someone place their hands on me hips.
I didn't have to look behind meself to know it was some fella.
“Want some company, love?” He asked me.
I pondered it for a while before I decided on me answer. “I’m only lookin’ to dance. You got that?”
As he chuckled, I could feel his chest vibrate. “Sure, love.”
I rolled me eyes and started to dance to me own music. When I felt something hard press up against me arse, I pushed him away and started walking away. He tugged me back.
“Oi, slag. Finish what you started.” He shouted in me face.
I scoffed before stomping on his foot and kneeing his crotch. “You have a hand, use it!” I yelled as he doubled over. I shoved him to the ground and walked away.
I was instantly smothered by hands.
“Oh my god! I can’t believe you just did that! You just did that!” Angie exclaimed.
“That was so fucking awesome. Look at you, bad-ass!” Cassie shouted.
Tina just had this big-arse smile on her face.
I laughed while shaking me head. “I’m glad youse enjoyed it, but unless he came here alone— we need to leave.”
We shuffled to our table, got our stuff and left. The night breeze whipped through our hair. I was falling into Cassie and Tina as we walked side by side.
I groaned exaggeratedly before shouting, “Should we just go to the flat? De’ fuckin’ weirdos are out tonight!”
Cassie cackled. “Maybe it’s because your dancing is driving men wild.”
I scoffed while pivoting me hip toward her. “I don’t give a fuck abar what they see. I’m not there to satisfy them. I’m ‘aving a fuckin’ dance.”
“So, you won’t make the first move, but you don’t want men to make the first move on you either… How does that work?” Tina quipped.
I craned me neck toward her before glaring at her. “Okay, Tina! Some liquid courage, right now, huh? No, I’m playing! I don’t know how it works, but it’s gonna be up to me if I want to give them me time. Okay? Okay.”
Angie snapped her fingers before saying. “Exactly! Exactly! Anyway, Ali’s right. Let’s head to the flat.” She hailed a taxi and we all got it.
I left the window open and leaned me head against it. That was ‘til Angie made me shut it. I blew raspberries at her, but did it anyway.
It didn’t take that long to reach the hotel and Angie paid. I was too busy walking up the steps. I saw the familiar doorman.
“Good evening, Ms. Welsh.” He greeted me. Mr. Wilson was an older man in his late 40s. That’s all you have to remember.
“Evening, Wilson.” I flashed him as smile and walked through the door he held open for me. I stumbled straight to the elevator and saw that I was walking way ahead of me friends.
I groaned while tipping me head back. The met me eventually and when the liftman spoke, I jumped. I didn’t notice that he was in here.
Cassie had to practically drag me out of the things since I had snoozed off. We were all full of cackles and giggles as we stumbled to Cassie’s flat. Once the door open and I crossed the threshold, I groaned extra exaggeratedly.
Angie shouted at me to shut up. I ignored her and worked on taking off these fucking devil heels. I threw them out of sight, out of mind then launched meself onto the bed.
“Open a bottle!” I chanted. “Open a bottle!”
When I heard the pop of a bottle, I cheered and flung meself back up. Cassie, Tina, and Angie were all sitting at the table. I trudged over to it and sat down rather unlady like.
I took the pins out of me hair and shook it out while throwing them on the table.
“So, Aliena, why did you turn down that man?” Angie asked.
I shrugged me shoulders. I didn’t expect her to be the one to ask that. “Didn’t feel like he was the one. Yaknow?” I reached for the glass of wine she’d just poured me and sipped it.
“Who will be the one?” Cassie quipped as she drank some of her wine.
Me gaze snapped toward her and I said without hesitation. “Perhaps it could be you.”
She as well as Tina spluttered. I smirked, victorious.
I sighed. “Why are you all so concerned with me love life so much? If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Right now, I’m not looking for meaningless sex nor am I looking to be in a relationship.” I realize that I didn’t say those words with perfect clarity, but— perhaps I did at the same time.
Tina cleared her throat. Everyone’s head turned to her.
“Because… Because we want to see you happy as the baby in the group.”
I blinked a couple of times as did everyone else apparently ‘cause once the three of us made eye contact with each other, we started cackling. I mean this was some heavy cackling. The kind that would embarrass you if your significant other heard it.
“No, but seriously— she’s right.” Cassie said through pants.
I sobered up real quick.
Angie continued. “Yeah. Look, this Thomas Shelby doesn’t seem like the kind of guy for you. I mean, hasn’t he made you cry like more than ten times, already? You don’t even want to find out if he likes you back. Why don’t you just find someone new?”
I blinked slowly as I tried to process what they said. I shook me head and muttered. “I’m gonna head to the loo.”
I closed the door behind me and stumbled to the sink. I was holding meself up on the sink and I looked up at me reflection. I took in a loud shuddering breath.
They didn’t understand. Tommy wasn’t a bad person, he was just ambitious. They don’t know abar his affectionate side like I do. The Tommy who joked and smiled with me at night. That Tommy was mine to adore on sleepless nights. The Tommy that makes me cry is very real, but it’s not even his fault. It’s mine.
It’s me who’s a coward. I already told them me reasons for not confronting him abar me feelings, why can’t they just accept that. I don’t want to have a bunch of one-night stands that’s not me! Why are they pushing me to do it when they don’t even do that to Tina? Is it because I’m a virgin?
I choked as I exhaled and wiped me eyes. I looked up at me reflection again and saw that I now had raccoon eyes. I blinked quickly while groaning to meself. The mascara was stinging me eyes. I opened the cabinet and scavenged for Cassie’s makeup remover items.
I’m not going to hold on to Tommy forever. I knew that in me heart. I had too precious of a goal to do that shit. Plus, the choice will be made for me in two years time. If Tommy knocks up Grace, that is. If he does, then I’m done. He loved her and only her. I have no right in the matter nor am I gonna kick up a fuss. I’m just glad to be in their lives.
I cherished his character for so long and so intensely that I actually managed to be “transported” to the Peaky Blinder Universe. Even if I don’t end up with him, this is still an excellent shot at life. I know things abar the future that will help me descendants. As ugly as this is, I can make a profit out of ideas that were invented in me timeline.
Me future doesn’t have to be completely uncertain anymore.
But no one can ever understand that. Not Cassie, Angie, Tina, Polly, or even Tommy could understand. I can plan me future with almost 100% guarantees that it will be a success.
It’s so tiring, though. I’m so tired of pretending to be someone I’m not. I have to remember lie after lie after lie.
I heaved for air as I slid down the sink. There was a knock at the door.
“Aliena, are you all right in there?”
I nodded, even though they couldn’t see me. “Yeah. I’m fine. Just need some time alone, please.”
“Okay.” Cassie said with a shaky voice.
I’m not upset at them. I’m upset with the truth their words held. I needed to get over Thomas Shelby. I knew that better than anyone. But, I was gonna do it me own way. Nobody can do it for me. I’m gonna do it at at me own time, nobody is gonna plan it for me.
I got up and wiped the tears that fell. I crawled over to where the toilet paper was, rolled some ‘round me hand and blew me nose. I threw it away and finally stood up. I walked back into the room where they all stared out me.
I pointed to the bed and whispered that I was going to sleep. They acknowledged it and I did as I said I was going to do.
I knew better than anyone that I shouldn’t be in love with Thomas Shelby. That he could get me killed, cheat on me, or ya know— create a toxic relationship. But, I didn’t see us as that. That’s what we were like on the surface. There’s unspoken words that are exchanged between us, always.
I knew he wasn’t good with words or actions because of the war and the business empire he wants to build. Do I get caught in the crossfire sometimes? Yes. Does me mental health suffer because of it? Yes, of course, it does! I’m human and a very emotional one at that!
I knew that some people think that Thomas Shelby was an absoulte arsehole and he is, but I saw why he was like that. I understood it. I would be that way too. I am that way. I do harbor similar feelings, but I also don’t want to be in a leadership position. I don’t want that dominance that Tommy does.
And, he does crave it.
I can’t fix him just like he can never fix me. But in my heart of hearts, I knew he may be the only one who understood these dark thoughts of mine just like I did his. But sometimes that isn’t enough.
I knew people like him craved an innocent partner at times. Not innocent in nature, but in their actions. They see the good in people, they’re optimists. A “low-born” man who is fascinated with a “high-born” woman because of her naive feisty nature.
I wasn’t any of that. I saw the worst in people. I consider meself a realist, but I’ve been called a pessimist.  I was born from a middle-class family. And while I am bratty, yes, bratty. I’ve been labeled this by too many friends and family members to try downplaying me character now. I just want to feel safe. I want warmth. I want someone to hold me and tell me that everything’s alright.
I sniffled and wiped me nose.
Truth is, right now, I’m in limbo. I’m surrounded by people who have good intentions but I’m feeling more depressed than ever.

A/N: I’m kinda happy with how this turned out. Like always, I rushed the ending because I got bored. But I think it’s still pretty good. So, when reading this you guys may be confused by the “workhouse howl”. It’s a term related to the workhouse that poor families worked at throughout England. I don’t know too much about it, but it was referenced in Call the Midwife and when I watched the scene it was in I wanted to cry because everything surrounding that is super sad. I also might do a fic that has more to do with the workhouses, I’ll just have to do a little more research first.

The deal they had made upon getting married was that work wasn’t to come home. As soon as either of them stepped foot in the house, all business, all work-related talk, was to be dropped. Shelby Company Limited, the Peaky Blinders, neither of them had a place in their house. Tommy had agreed to deal for one reason and one reason only; as Y/n didn’t work for him, it kept her out of the business and danger. It was the perfect safety net. Perfect until it wasn’t.
“Where’s Tommy?” Y/n asked Esme as she walked through the empty betting shop in search of her husband. Taking her hat off, she set it on the table and took a seat in front of her sister-in-law.
“He’s not here.” Her curt answer caused the woman across from her to frown.
A sigh escaped her lips as Y/n leaned back in her chair. She had walked all the way from her mother’s house, feet sore from the shoes that were only meant show, for nothing. “Do you know where he is?”
Esme quickly glanced up at her, “No.” When asked where her own husband was, she said, “With Tommy.”
Y/n shook her head, loose curls bouncing with the action. She knew better than to trust a word Esme said. John told her everything, if he was with Tommy, she would know where the two were. “Alright, then,” she drawled and got to her feet. Leaving the woman behind her, she entered the kitchen to find Finn sitting at the table. It was a surprise to see him away from his brothers that he admired so much, but a welcome one. “What are you doing here?”
The boy looked up from the deck of cards in front of him, a smile appeared on his face upon seeing the woman who had become much like a mother to him. “Playing cards.”
She nodded and pulled out the chair next to him. Taking a seat, she asked, “Why aren’t you with your brothers?”
Taking a card out of the deck, Finn flipped it over. the woman beside him had no clue what card he was looking for, but the one that was pulled out clearly wasn’t the one when his lips turned down in a frown. “Tommy said he doesn’t need a kid fucking up his meeting,” he mumbled, either upset at his brother’s words or the card that he couldn’t find.
“Finn! Watch your tongue,” Y/n scolded before she wrapped an arm around his shoulder and pulled him close to her. “He’s just trying to protect you, okay?” What she wanted to say was, ‘You don’t fuck things up, you’re brother does,’ but she held her tongue. No one needed to know how much the man had been pissing her off lately but her. “Where is he anyway?”
“At your house.”
Y/n raised a brow, trying to put the puzzle together. How could he be at their house if he was in a meeting? “Where’s the meeting at?”
Going back to his game, Finn couldn’t see the dangerous mixture of anger and fear in his sister-in-law’s eyes when he answered. “Your house.”
“You have fun, okay?” Y/n ruffled his hair, earning a groan from him as she pushed herself up and was out the door before he could even respond.
How dare he!
Y/n wouldn’t have been angry, she probably wouldn’t have given it a second thought if it weren’t for the fact that she knew her husband kept everything from her. What started out as a simple agreement to leave work at the office had turned into something much more. Y/n was kept in the dark about everything. Every little thing. She didn’t work for the company, so when secrets were shared between his family, she thought nothing of it. If she were meant to know, then she would know, right? Wrong.
She was to know nothing.
The first clue was when her questions would go unanswered. Polly was the best at dodging her questions. The woman was a master at weaving a sentence that made Y/n feel as though her question had been answered. Any word that came off her tongue was done so with confidence and kindness, how could anyone believe it to be a lie? John and Arthur always played dumb when she asked them anything. To Y/n, it made sense. There were many things that Tommy even kept from his family, so it was no surprise to his wife if his own brothers didn’t know what was going on. But then there was Esme. She was the worst about, not even bothering to concoct a decent lie. The gypsy didn’t care whether she was believed or not, she did what her husband and her boss told her to. If she was told to keep her mouth shut about business matters, it would be shut and she would do her best to make sure everyone knew they would never get an answer out of her. Her replies were the opposite of Polly’s in that way. They were curd and short. Esme didn’t care if Y/n believed her, it wasn’t her job to make that happen.
The only one that hadn’t gotten the memo not to say a word to Y/n, was Finn. Not like he would have listened anyway.
Knowing her husband had deliberately kept things from her stung. And knowing that, it wouldn’t surprise her if this kept his family from fully trusting her. God, it was like adding salt to the wound once the thought crossed her mind. They probably wondered why he would marry her if she couldn’t be trusted with simple matters of business.
Y/n couldn’t pick an emotion as she walked the streets of Small Heath. Rage bubbled inside, encasing her heart, feeling as she had been betrayed. Pelting her like rain, sadness landed on her exposed skin, quickly being absorbed and running through her blood street. Fire and ice, what she felt was burning and cold. A heartache that she never could have predicted.
The people on the street must have seen the conflict inside her as they gazed at her with pity and sorrow. None of them wanted to feel the pain the young woman was experiencing, that they knew. So, they parted like the Red Sea, allowing her a swift route to her front door. They dare do anything to cause any more grief. The people of the area knew too well what grief could do to the soul as everyone was familiar with the sound of the workhouse howl.
Arriving on her doorstep, Y/n forced herself to take a deep breath. Was she ready for what was behind the door?
No.
No, she wasn’t. She wasn’t ready to be hit by a brick wall. Wasn’t ready for every truth the family had ever told her to be brought under questioning. For every lie to be raised from the dead. Y/n wasn’t ready for the world she knew to fall apart like a crumbling building.
Instead of reaching for the handle, instead of opening the door and facing her problems head-on, Y/n did the only thing she could think of. She ran. Her mother would scold her for such a thing, abandoning her problems on the doorstep, but it had to be done. She wasn’t in the proper headspace to deal with what Tommy had done.
People weren’t fast to move as the young woman weaved between them. She was left to dodge women and their small children, carts being pulled by men that had seen better day, children that smiled at her behavior. Step after step, stride after stride, Y/n let her feet carry her to the part of the city that had been left to decay. Small, broken, wooden factories that were left to the past once the brick ones over towered them. They knew her pain, whether anyone would believe it, they knew her pain. The abandoned buildings knew what it was like to be stabbed in the back by those they trusted. They knew what it was like to watch the world go on without them and no one bat an eye that they had been left behind.
Y/n slowed her pace as she neared the canal that ran near a few of the buildings. Standing on the edge, she closed her eyes and screamed. It was blood-curdling and matched her sorrow. The screams echoed down the empty street. She screamed and screamed, knowing that no one would come rushing to her aide, until she could scream no more.
Voice hoarse, she collapsed against the cement belong, the skirt of her dress falling around her legs. Tears finally escaped, racing down her cheek like a river after a heavy storm. She didn’t bother to wipe them away, letting them fall against the material of her skirt. Y/n didn’t have it in herself to care, not with what she’d have to deal with once she returned home.
“Why does he do this?” she muttered between the sobs. “Why?”
Oh, yes, why did Thomas Shelby always find ways to fuck things up? It was a mystery to everyone, even his own wife. Y/n wanted to believe he trusted her, she wanted to believe that his family trusted her, accepted her, but that couldn’t be done with the hole that had been dug for her. What could bring her to the same level as everyone else? What could keep them from burying her alive? Y/n didn’t know, the answers had been taken from her by the one person she trusted the most.
“I’ve do-done nothing!” She fell onto her back, the cloudy sky above greeting her. “Nothing…”
She stayed like that for what must have been hours. Letting her heartbeat slow to normal and her tears dry up. Letting the burning, the fire inside her become nothing but warm embers. When she felt calm, when the sun was starting to sink below the relics of around her, Y/n got to her feet. Brushing off the dirt, she slowly made her way back home, her legs screaming at her for what she had made them do.
It was almost dark when Y/n opened the door to the house she shared with the last person she wanted to see. Before shutting the door, words traveled down the hall, catching her ear. They couldn’t be made out, but it was clear Tommy wasn’t alone. When the door hit the frame, there was silence.
“Y/n?” Tommy questioned, stepping out of the kitchen to see her figure in the shadows of the unlit hallway. There was no answer as his wife walked past him, not even a glance his way, as she headed to the parlor. “Where have you been?” he asked, voice laced with worry. “No one has seen you in hours.”
The words fell on deaf ears. With her back to him, Y/n opened the liquor cabinet and, bypassing the whiskey, pulled out a bottle of vodka. Her husband’s choice of drink wouldn’t be strong enough to numb everything. Grabbing a glass, she filled it almost to the rim. Arthur, John, and Polly appeared in the doorway behind Tommy just in time to witness the polish remover to be downed in a few seconds. Y/n set it back down forcefully, the sound of glass against wood left her unfazed. She didn’t care if the delicate glass were to break. Hell, she wanted to throw it and the bottle against the wall, watch it shatter.
“Y/n,” he said gently as he approached her much like he would a wild horse. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” she answered, pouring herself another glass. A hand grasped the bottle, stopping the clear liquid from filling her glass. Y/n did nothing as the lid was put on the bottle and moved from her reach.
“Why are you lying?”
A harsh laugh escaped her lips. “Why am I lying?” Y/n violently turned towards him, wondering why a liar would ask such a question. “I should be the one asking that question! Asking why you all are lying to me, keeping things from my,  and doing business in my own home without my knowledge!” she screamed at all the people in the room.
Tommy sighed as Y/n stormed past him, heading for the refuge of their room. “Is that why you didn’t come home?” he asked, angry that she would worry him over this.
“Yes,” she spat as Arthur and John moved for her. “I was going to go back home, but then I remembered that you live here too!”
Silence once again filled the house, Y/n ascending the stairs, while her family, in shock, past glances around the room. Polly was the first to speak up, disgust evident when she looked at her nephew. “Now, look what you’ve done,” she hissed, moving to stand by the fireplace. “I warned you that she would be hurt by this, but you never listen.”
Tommy gave no reaction, instead focusing his eyes on the vodka he’d placed in front of him. He didn’t need the harsh words of his aunt’s to make him regret his decisions. He knew good and well that he’d gone too far, he always went too far.
All the man wanted was to keep the woman he loved out of danger. That was easier to be done if she were kept out of the spotlight. If she weren’t present at meetings, working in the betting shop, or accompanying her husband to different business arrangements, there was little chance that she would be caught in the crossfire. But with that mindset, Tommy had done the one thing he knew dreamed of; he broke her heart and caused her to question his trust.
No one in the room needed to tell him that he may never mend what was broken, he wasn’t foolish enough to believe there would be no consequences for his actions.
Y/n was spread out on the bed, staring at the textured ceiling, when the door creaked open, exposing her husband. Tommy made sure his steps were soft, he’d waited for her to calm down, not wanting to cause a raging fight where words would be said that couldn’t be taken back. “I’m sorry.” From where he stood, he could see Y/n roll her eyes. It hurt that she didn’t believe him when he wasn’t one to throw around apologies. Sighing, Tommy made his way to the bed, the mattress sinking against his weight as he sat beside her. “I am sorry that I’ve hurt you, love. I never intended to do that.”
Feeling his gaze, Y/n tried to keep her tears at bay as she said, “Then why’d you do it?”
“I wanted to… I wanted to protect you,” Tommy admitted, a hand grazing over the one that laid beside him. It was taken as a sign of progress when Y/n didn’t move her hand out of his reach.
She scoffed, “And that meant living in a house full of lies? All I asked was for the workday to end once you come home.”
“I know, I know.”
There was silence as Y/n pushed herself into a sitting position. Finally meeting his eyes, Y/n could see the regret that contoured his features and the sadness that pooled in his eyes. A hand went to cup his cheek, the man melting against her touch. “This will not continue, do you understand me? We will be equals in knowledge.” He nodded as her fingers rubbed circles on along his skin. “I don’t want to be apart of the business, but I don’t want you to hide it from me.”
Lips turning up in a smile, Tommy wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his forehead against her’s. “Are those all your demands?” he teased, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. When she nodded, he continued, “Then you will get all that you ask for and more.”
“I’m still mad at you even with these promises,” Y/n admitted, “And you break them, you will have to find yourself a new home and a new wife.”
Tommy simply nodded, he knew there would be consequences and he fully accepted them. He had cut a deep wound and it would take time for it heal. If Y/n didn’t wish to see him or be near him, let him touch or speak to her, he would understand that. Any punishment given would be understandable.

We moved west, staying north, and found a place to camp far from where any Pinkertons were still patrolling. We travelled for hours, all through the remaining hours of the night, through the morning and into the afternoon. We ended up at Cotorra Springs when the sun began to set; it was cooler there and when we found a spot away from any trails, pretty secluded, we decided it was as good a place as any. The rushing sound of the geysers erupting every now and then kept making me jump at first but soon became a somewhat comforting sound. A reminder that no matter what happened, life always carried on, the world wasn't going to stop spinning and fall to pieces just yet.
We set up a small campsite with a few tents and a fire, over which we cooked meat from a deer that Charles had hunted while the rest of us set up. None of us knew how long we would be there but it was clear that we all needed some food and some rest before we even attempted to figure out our next move. We all sat around the fire with our food and little Jack was asleep with Cain by his side; the dog had tagged along with us on our journey, jumping atop the Marston's wagon whenever he got too tired.
"What exactly are we all gonna do?" John was the first one to bring up the elephant in the room, and everyone turned to eye him almost irritatedly.
Nobody spoke up or offered any sort of response, and after a moment, Lenny threw his hat in the ring.
"It's a good question. We can't live like this forever, can we?"
"Course not," Arthur said. He didn't quite snap the words but they weren't untroubled. "We've got a chest full of money on that wagon, we'll… we'll figure out what everyone wants to do and split it accordingly."
"I don't want a penny of that money," Sadie hissed, then spat into the fire, "reeks of Dutch and Micah and dirty betrayal."
"Hey, that implies it was all their money. Dutch barely put a penny in if it weren't from a job we all did together," John scoffed.
"I don't want it either but let's be rational. We're gonna need it," Charles said, looking at Sadie. "We didn't just go through all that only to starve to death at the end of it, all because of pride."
"He's got a point," I agreed. "I don't think any of us should have a problem taking that bastard's money," I added.
"Ain't his money," John shook his head, picking at something stuck in his teeth, "it's our half, fair 'n' square."
"Yeah," I nodded after a moment, but frowned a little. Silence lingered.
"It's obvious none of us feel too good about takin' it," Abigail broke it, stating the unspoken.
"I feel fine," John snorted.
"Me too, for the most part," I hesitantly agreed. Arthur sighed beside me and everyone looked at him.
"For the love of God, not a single one of you refuse that money. This is hard enough, at this point, that money's the only thing that made this possible. Without money, we're trapped, and if we're trapped, we'll end up in the damn ground," he told us through tensely gritted teeth. More silence followed, broken by Susan.
"You're right, Mr. Morgan. This ain't no time for pride and making things needlessly hard on ourselves. We've just gotta take this opportunity to get the heck out of this mess, so I don't wanna hear no bellyaching from any of you," she said sternly, and John nodded in agreement. Lenny took a breath, and nodded too.
"And what're you gonna do Miss Grimshaw?" I asked her softly. She met my eyes across the fire, her brows arching a little in surprise that I'd asked.
"Me? I'm- I'm–" she began hesitantly, and glanced at the others before letting out a breath.
"You ain't thought about it none?" Abigail asked, and Susan turned her gaze to her.
"Quite the opposite," she scoffed a laugh, then patted the side of her hair bun in an attempt at brushing back fly-aways. "Maybe I'm just a little bit ashamed to admit that I've been planning for this for a while."
My eyes widened, and so did most of the others'.
"Oh come on. Please. A woman would have to be foolish to not consider a few back up plans in this way of life. Especially with how things have been the past few months. Even Miss O'Shea had her plans," she added, and my eyes dropped down at her mention. I always felt strange about the whole Molly situation, considering I was potentially the last person to really talk to her.
"You ain't wrong. So what's your plan?" Abigail asked.
"I know a lot of people Miss Roberts, I have options," she chuckled. "But I think I envision a future in moonshine. An old friend of mine's been wanting to go into business together for a while now, I think I'll pay her a visit."
"Which old friend is this, anyone we know?" Arthur questioned.
"No. If you knew her, you'd know exactly who I'm talking about. She ain't a lady you easily forget," Susan chuckled, shaking her head.
"Ain't nothing to do with those Braithwaites, then?" John snorted and Susan rolled her eyes.
"The Maggie I know would sooner hang than have anything to do with those idiots," she laughed. I smiled as I watched her laugh, feeling my admiration for her swell. Susan was a woman I would never be like, and I knew I'd miss her sorely despite all of the times I'd giggled when one of the girls would roll their eyes or pull a face at her behind her back. I knew everyone had a lot of love for her, and I did too.
"What about you then, Lenny?" Arthur asked. "What's your plan?"
"Ohh, I'll be a rolling stone for a while I think, see where life takes me. I’d like to… learn,” he said almost hesitantly, a mild frown puckering the skin between his brows. His eyes lifted and settled on Charles for a brief moment, “maybe, if the stars align, I might just have a chance at making something of myself,” he laughed, but there was an ugly reality behind his words that bittered them slightly, though he kept smiling, and it was no accident that it was Charles that his eyes landed on. The smile that Charles returned to him was one of quiet understanding.
“My father, he wanted me to be a lawyer,” Lenny turned his grin to me, his eyes brightening a little. “From bank robber to lawyer, can you imagine that?”
I chuckled, despite the fact that with Lenny’s intelligence, charisma and articulateness, I didn't doubt his capability.
“Dutch always said I had too much potential to stay robbing banks for the rest of my life,” he breathed, looking down into the fire, the flames reflecting in his eyes, making them shine bright even though his energy dulled a little at his mention. Yet another silence fell across the campfire and I kept my eyes on the young man before me, so full of potential yet held back by so many factors far out of his control, and my heart hurt.
“I think that's the only thing I know of that came out of his mouth and made a lick of sense,” I noted. He looked at me, held my gaze for a few moments, then released a quiet breath.
“Maybe I’ll head to Washington D.C. Try to get a job, or go to school. I don't know about being a lawyer,” he breathed a laugh and shook his head, “but doing something… more than what I have been doing. That’d be good. I think my dad would be proud of that.”
“Your dad would be proud of you already, Lenny. I mean that. You’re a good kid, got a good heart,” Arthur told him, and everyone made a show of agreement, nodding, humming confirmations and patting him on the shoulder.
“Thanks, all’a you, I… it's been quite a ride, ain’t it?” Lenny sighed.
“That it has…” Charles trailed off.
“And I think I’m gonna hit the hay,” Abigail announced, dropping her plate on the ground before rising to her feet. I watched as she very carefully bundled Jack up into her arms. “Goodnight, y’all.”
“Goodnight,” the rest of us whispered softly, as if suddenly we would all wake up the boy, even though he’d been sleeping just fine before.
“I need some sleep too,” John agreed, and it set off a chain reaction, and Lenny and Susan retired to their sleeping spots. Charles drained the contents of his bottle of the beer that Sadie had managed to snag before we all left.
“Arthur, tomorrow night we should…” he said quietly as he rose to his feet, trailing off. Arthur met his eyes and stared silently for a while, then nodded.
“We will.”
“Alright. Thank you,” Charles nodded, then headed towards his tent.
“I weren’t planning on leaving him, not for a second,” Arthur called after him and Charles waved a hand dismissively, smiling over his shoulder at him.
“I know. Goodnight, folks,” he added, then crawled inside his tent to bed down for the night. I glanced at Arthur for some clarification and his eyes dropped to the ground.
“Eagle Flies got captured by the army. I said I’d break him out, I have to, princess–”
“Don't think I’m gonna try to stop you,” I whispered. He turned his head towards me, and I kissed his cheek.
“Thank you. He got caught when I was helping Dutch screw the lot of ‘em over, pretending to be helpful. I gotta speak to him and his father, tell them about what happened with the gang today. Eagle Flies can’t keep on trusting him, getting sucked in by his fancy words just like I did at his age. It won’t do anyone any good in the end,” he explained, and I nodded in agreement.
"You need some help breaking him out?" Sadie questioned. Arthur met her eyes and shook his head.
"Charles has a plan, shouldn't need more than the two of us."
"In that case, maybe there's something you can help me with instead," she said, leaning forwards, elbows on knees. My stomach squeezed a bit at the way her eyes lit with devilish determination. "O'Driscolls. There's a bunch of 'em hiding out over at Hanging Dog Ranch."
"Sadie–" Arthur began, his hand raising.
"With Colm gone and with just a few stragglers left, we can end those bastards for good," she cut him off, her hands clenching into fists. I took a breath and looked down at my feet, pressing my lips together.
"Sadie, I… I don't think we– we just got out of a bad situation, we're doing all we can just to get by–" he began again, and I could feel his tense but careful sympathy in his tone.
"We can finish 'em. We can. This is all I got left now, bringing some kinda justice to those sick bastards after what they did to me, what they did to my husband," she leaned forwards even more, her body tensing up, I could see her from the corner of my eye, getting full of desperation. I sensed Arthur glance at me.
My heart ached. We were finally away from Dutch and I had hoped that it would be the end of Arthur risking his life over grudges. I could handle him going with Charles to break a good man out of prison, I wasn't happy about the risk he was putting himself at but I knew he had to do it. But going to kill O'Driscolls? I was so conflicted. Sadie deserved closure over what happened to her husband, but I didn't want to lose Arthur over it. I couldn't stand it if we came this far only to–
"Please, Arthur. I need someone to ride with me. I can't go in there on my own but if I got no one–” Sadie's voice cracked and my eyes flashed up to her. "You're the only one I trust to do this with me and do it right. And I gotta do it, Arthur, I can't just let them get away with it. Please."
I stared at Sadie, feeling her pain emanating from her in waves, it made the hairs on my arms stand up and bile rise in my throat. My eyes tingled as tears threatened to form there, and Arthur looked at me again. Then Sadie did. Suddenly, I found, it was my choice, without even saying a word.
I nervously toyed with the locket around my neck, and saw Arthur's eyes momentarily flitter down to it.
"Arthur you–" I began after some time, when it was made clear that they were waiting on my blessing. Mine. Like I had any control over anything. "Sadie's done so much for us," I said monotonously, though it wasn't without feeling, "it's clear she needs this."
"Thank you!" Sadie exhaled, and I rose to my feet.
"I need to sleep," I whispered, then stepped over the log I'd been sitting on and headed for the tent I shared with Arthur. "Goodnight."
I climbed inside and laid down on my bedroll, wrapping myself up in the blanket and curling up on my side. I could hear quiet voices outside the tent, a muffled mix of soft tones from both Sadie and Arthur, none of which I could make out as words. It was only a few minutes before cool air filled the tent as the flap was pulled back, and Arthur climbed in beside me. He shuffled around, getting under his own blanket and scooting up behind me, his hand gingerly resting on my hip.
"Princess," he whispered. I made a small hum of acknowledgement. "Are you okay?"
I nodded my head, and Arthur exhaled, then kissed the shell of my ear.
"Talk to me, please."
"I'm sorry Arthur. I'm trying not to put a leash on you, and trying to give Sadie the opportunity to get justice for her husband. All the while I'm worrying any one of these jobs people have you doing'll be the one that kills you. Right when we're finally doing what we've been waiting for," I whispered. Arthur's hand gently drifted up and down my side, his lips still at my ear giving me little pecks.
"I could try to reassure you, but it won't help, will it?" He said softly, sadly. I shook my head. "What do you want me to do instead?"
"Nothing. I don't want you to do anything, Arthur. I can't ask you not to do all these things. That's why I came in here to sleep, cause I know anything I say ain't gonna do any good."
"Are you angry with me?"
"No, I'm not," I breathed, then rolled over to face him. "I'm not mad, I'm worried. And I'll be worried until we're away from here for good. That's it. All I need from you is just to hold me right now, so I can enjoy the time I have with you," I told him, and kissed his chin. He wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on my head.
"Just a couple more jobs, princess, then it's over. I promise," he told me.
"Please keep your word," I whispered, closing my eyes and nestling my face into his collar.
"I will. I'm under nobody's thumb no more, I do what I want. These things, they're just… they're things I gotta do for my friends. I know you understand that, right?"
"I do. It's why I'm not stopping you."
"I'm real lucky I have you. And that you're like this. You're a good woman," he told me and I chuckled, shaking my head a little.
"You don't have to flatter me, Arthur."
"I ain't flattering. I'm thanking you. Thank you," he said, pressed his lips momentarily to the crown of my head. "I love you."
"I love you too," I replied.
After a few moments of silence, Arthur spoke again. "Can I ask you something? Or shall I let you sleep?"
"Now I'm curious about the question. Go on," I answered.
"Where'd you get that locket from? The one you been wearing since I got back. Looks familiar."
The question surprised me. It wasn't anything like what I was expecting, and I laughed. Then stopped when I considered my answer. My heart was suddenly pounding because I knew I had to address how I had felt while he was away in Guarma.
"It was Susan's," I told him. "She gave it to me."
"That'll be why it's familiar," he mused.
"It has a photograph of you inside it," I added. He was quiet for a moment.
"It does?" He questioned, tone going up a note.
I hummed my confirmation. "I… I was real bad for a while when you was gone. Susan wanted to cheer me up. I haven't taken it off since."
"Did it make you feel better?"
"A little. It was nice to have something of you, at least. But it didn't hurt any less, that you were gone."
"It would've been a comfort to have something of you with me while I was away. I thought about you constantly, I wanted to see your face just once… I didn't even have my journal, with my drawings of you. They don't live up to the real thing but they're something, at least," he whispered, squeezing me tight.
"Let me see them," I whispered, kissing his collar bone. He made a small sound, a sort of hum, sort of sigh.
"My drawings?"
I nodded as I moved back a little to look at him. "I've only seen a couple of your drawings of me. How many have you done?"
"More than you've seen," he chuckled sheepishly, then rolled onto his back, staring up at the top of the tent. I shifted onto my elbow and gazed down at him.
"May I see?" I questioned insistently, his grin widened. He was embarrassed, it was clear. "It's just me," I whispered, stroking my hand over his chest.
"Just you? That's the problem."
"Problem?"
"I'm worried I'll embarrass you."
"Why would I be embarrassed?" I laughed. Arthur sighed and met my eyes.
"Get my journal," he acquiesced. I giggled and sat up, reaching for his satchel that sat by his feet. I retrieved the journal and handed it to him, but he nodded towards me, urging me to keep it. "Take a look, princess."
