#also how are rocky mountain oysters not on that list

Whoever gave the foods for that American food poll is clearly either west or east coast. No one from the south would slander good food like that, and no one from the midwest would neglect to mention the atrocities that every aunt or neighbor brings to potlucks. If you’ve suffered thru the mayo and jello based salads and the Frankensteined casseroles, you know they belong on there over grits, biscuits and gravy, and boiled peanuts. Also like, the basic white person from the suburbs meal of boiled/baked chicken, steamed broccoli, and steamed carrots, all with no seasoning…that should honestly have a spot too

The best songs of the 1970s
“What started out as a joke has turned into a disaster!” - Stu Nahan, Rocky IV
So my employment has me in my car a lot, which means I’m listening to the radio a lot. If I’m not listening to a podcast or baseball game through my phone I also have SiriusXM, which of course has a plethora of musical options. I gravitate to the 70s and 80s channels because, well, of course I do.
Something else about me you may or may not know is that I love ranking things. I have a Note on my phone I’m regularly accessing that is nothing but different types of rankings.
Thus, you can imagine my excitement when the 70s on 7 station announced a listener-voted Top 700 Songs of the 70s countdown over Labor Day weekend. It was a fun listen. They went through it twice over the four day weekend, and I was laboring much so I heard much.
It prompted me to think: What are my top seventy songs of the 70s? Surely I wasn’t going to come up with a top 700. After all, some in that list were real stinkers. But seventy? No problem. And indeed, it wasn’t hard to come up with that many songs. The hard part was narrowing it down. And once I did, there were still so many songs on my list I had enough for more lists, so I expanded it to 140, then 210, and... well...
I’m about to give you the authoritative list of the 350 best songs of the 1970s. I originally put out a Top 70 list on Facebook a few weeks ago. Much that of that list remains the same, with a few changes. But now there is much more. I’ve divided these into five “volumes” of seventy songs. They are my picks, but I welcome your feedback, because what’s a good set of rankings without debate and discussion.

2x3 rewatch
I keep forgetting that Brach is still in S2.  Oops.  Also, I apparently went to check something in S6 last time I watched something, so it started at 6x2 instead of 2x3 and I yelled.  But anyway, on with this mess.  “Death Came in Like Thunder” apparently.  It sure did.
Ah yes, let us not forget that Branch is MANLEH.  This shall be proven to us by him murdering his cousin, Trunk, with big ax.  Chop chop, Branch, kill Trunk.  But oh no, must also show that he is People Smart, so must also lose because this makes him likable.  And many white people clap.  Yaaaay.  But be sure to say, “I let him win, Ferg,” while your competitor is right next to you, so he almost surely heard you.  Good good.
Oh Ferg.  Could you look more gormless if you tried?  (I mean, probably not, since presumably that was the goal of the actor, so he would have been trying.  But still.)  Bb.
Heh, nice thematic cut to Walt also chopping wood.  And YAY, Henry’s gorgeous truck (and gorgeous self).  I’m just going to take a moment to appreciate the fact that Henry rolls up and just helps himself to some of Walt’s thermos of coffee.  Because of course he does.  But I do so love these touches that they put in that do underline the fact that they are married have been besties for going on 40 years.  Also, I love this jacket of Henry’s.  The woven top, jean jacket sort of one?  Yeah, top 5 costume pieces of his for me.  (Also on that list, all basically tied with each other, basically any pants he wears.  I am reminded, when they cut back out to a full body shot.  Because I am very shallow, and he is very pretty.)
Haaaaaa.  And of course Cady talked to Henry before she talked to Walt.  Walt is a butthead.  And, yeah yeah, she just found out that he’d been lying to her for over a year, but that just proves my point that Walt is a butthead.  And we’re back to this whole idea that she left her phone, which just... ugh.  No.  But Henry’s face when he says that she said that she is safe, and he’s so worried, but still willing to respect her boundaries.
“She is an adult, Walt.”  “She’s my daughter.”  For fuck’s sake, you jackass, your ADULT daughter; that’s the whole flipping point!  Also, that little emphasis on my daughter, pfft.  If you didn’t want to feel like she preferred her cool dad to you, maybe try being less of an AAAAAAASSHOLE.  And, like, respecting her.  Even a weensy little bit.
“Etta Place”  I don’t remember if we find out why that’s the ‘assumed name’ that Cady chose, but I’m intrigued.  Wait, I just googled.  Looooool.  She spent years with Butch and Sundance.  Nice.
Walt is such a soft touch with teens.  *snack crackle pop* that kneecap back into place.  Vic starts this scene saying, “The 911 operator,” though, which is interesting, because I was kind of under the impression that Ruby was the main dispatcher, so it would be kind of heartening if she actually had back up with that.  ...Or maybe they’re just far enough out that a cell call made would be picked up by a tower farther out and have to be routed back in to the station/them.  I have no idea how that actually works.  Another rabbit hole for me to totally not go down.  Hopefully.  Shit.  They’ve apparently upped the fine for trespass since the show, though, because it’s $750 (or 6 months in jail) now and Walt says it’s $500.
And once again, we see Vic actually wearing gloves while investigating a suspicious death, and Walt just squinting into the distance helpfully.  I suppose “things got bad” in Basque country around WWII, but there has been friction there that dates back before the Spanish Civil War, or even the Carlist Wars the previous century.  It did get gnarly with the dictatorship of Franco, and the formation of the ETA in retaliation, though, so yeah.  (Francisco Franco is also on the list of people who anybody with a time machine should go back and beat the shit out of.)
Shit, I forgot about the animal death.
Knock knock, no answer.  Better just wander in without a warrant.  I know that the guy who they know lives there is dead, but still, no fricking warrant; I suppose the worry of a poisoning could count as probably cause?
Gods, but there are moments when I do absolutely adore Vic, and they are usually when she’s taking the piss out of Walt.  “Reclusive bachelor chic; you and Marco have the same decorator.”  Looool.  But also, sad, because Martha has only been gone for a little over a year, and Walt is not the kind of person who would, like, change stuff and get rid of her things, so that’s kind of odd.  Maybe Henry and/or Cady went though and put away some of her things to try to help Walt move on?  But damn, the ‘excuse you’ look on Walt’s face when she does say it, pffft.
AND AGAIN, Vic wearing gloves, Walt with his bare ass hands picking up the picture of Picasso’s Guernica; can you at least *pretend* you’re a cop, *some* of the time, buddy?
Lol at the barrabilak; they are pretty well by the Rocky Mountains, so it’s probably not all that surprising that Walt’s had some “Rocky Mountain oysters” before.
I had forgotten that Vic had four brothers.  But her comment about Sal going off to look after the sheep and how if someone had told her that one of her brothers were dead she “wouldn’t care about any damn sheep,” I don’t know.  It kind of annoys me.  It’s totally in character for her, which is good, but I think it’s part of what can annoy me about her character.  Different people grieve differently, but also, I know she’s only been in Wyoming for a year or two, tops, but how is it so hard to fathom that someone one would be concerned about their livelihood, even in the face of personal tragedy?  Just, seeing beyond her own very narrow experience doesn’t seem like something she’s very good at.  It would be one thing if she’d framed it as “this is suspicious, and here’s why I think so as a cop,” but it was, “I wouldn’t react that way personally, so it’s sus.”
Sure, be suspicious because there’s a suspicious death and family members are always suspects until ruled out, but approach it like a cop.  Or at least think about it from more angles than just your own, not terribly similar experience.  You’re a white city cop who can’t (or won’t) adjust to being in BF rural-ville, but these are immigrant shepherds whose family come from a homeland where the cops were just as likely to kill you as answer questions, and you’re side-eying a guy for going to make sure that their meal ticket doesn’t get obliterated?
I need to keep reminding myself that I really did want to like Vic.  I really did.  She just... they don’t make it easy for me.  Maybe she’s serving as an avatar for audience who don’t know about some of the culture stuff, and the audience get answers from her ignorance?  But honestly, I wish they’d picked a different way to handle that, if that’s what they were trying to do.  Her response to Henry being salty about Thanksgiving still really pisses me off.  Because it was shitty and racist, and... do we really need a character basically rolling their eyes and saying, “It was so long ago, why don’t you just get over it,” about something that is intrinsically tied to the genocide of so many people?  Why are Indigenous people just supposed to “get over it” but “Remember the Alamo” and “Southern Pride,” and shit?  Fuck’s sake.  Honestly, that might have been the moment when they lost me on her character.  She has moments where she’s awesome, but they never really address her being fucking racist or give her a chance to grow into a better person.  Which sucks a lot.  Fuck.  Ok, that was a lot.  Sorry.  Back to the actual ep.
AH, nice of you to beam in from the campaign trail, Brancheroo!
Uh, so I paused it to look at pic in the newspaper, and then being me, started to look at the articles surrounding the pic.  And the one with the headline “Fans Injured At Local Game” is actually about the Stewart case?  From 1x3?  I’m guessing that somebody went to the trouble of writing up an article for that for some S1 ep after it and they just plugged it in because when not paused, you might catch “Sheriff Longmire” there and that’s all they need.  Especially since the text starts to repeat after the first paragraph.  (I am the worst pedantic little shit.)  Ooooor, maybe even though it’s S2, it’s hardly been any time since 1x3?  The date on the newspaper is March 31, 2012, so there’s a timeline hint.
Awwwwww, once Walt points out the bird, Ferg knows exactly what it is.  Occasional twitcher, are we, my lad?  “A red-tip meadowlark,” indeed.  Oh bb; Ferg’s face when he sees Walt looking at the pic of him with Branch in the paper.
“You go too fast, you miss the little things.”  Every once in a while, he actually sort of mentors Ferg.  I wish he did more of that, especially since we see later how capable Ferg can be.
Go suck an egg, Branch.  Why does she get all the “good” assignments?  Maybe because she was actually on the job when they found the body, not campaigning.
OPE.  Lizzie’s gift.  Yeah, I’d probably choke on that coffee if I were you, too, girl.  Better hope that there wasn’t perishable food stuffs in that gift, because that has been in there for a whiiiiiile, hasn’t it.  Wait, was Ferg in the office when Lizzie dropped off the gift?  Because his face said more than just “Did somebody give Vic a present?”  Suuuuper subtle with that whole pushing the drawer closed with your foot there, Vic.  Pfffft.
“Cyrano Caballero”  How daaaare that skeeve take Cyrano’s name in vain?!?!  (I have a thing about Cyrano de Bergerac.  It’s quite possibly my favourite play, and I adore the character, and have exactly 0 chill about it at all.  I find Brian Hooker’s translation of “The Ballade of the duel at the Hotel Bourgogne Between de Bergerac and a Boeotian” with “Then, as I end the refrian, thrust home,” vastly superior to any other translation that I’ve heard or read, though for the rest of it, I will grant that there are others to be preferred.  But that version of his Ballade is exquisite, and I will not be swayed.  Holy shit, FOCUS.  That is so very much not the point.)  It’s not even a throw away line in this ep, it’s just a random, very well chosen, if utterly appallingly insulting, company name.  It’s actually incredibly clever for what the business is, and if it didn’t make me so stomping mad, I would applaud whoever came up with it heartily.
Vic’s face listening to this jackass’ spiel is a thing of beauty.  “A good woman goes a long way of easing the obvious stresses of your daily life,” the jackass says, cutting his eyes at Vic when he says “obvious stresses,” and I caaaackle.
What is it about this guys’ horrible glasses that just makes him so much more hate-able?  I’m not entirely sure, but kudos to whatever costumer put those on him, because they are perfect.  In the ‘I want to punch him’ way of perfection.
And after all of that about Walt’s “lady friend,” Vic brings Lizzie’s present.  Womp womp.  That went super well.  Yuuuup, run while you can.
Poor Ferg.  Branch manipulates him, Vic ignores him, Walt shuts him down...  Poor guy just can’t get a break.
I actually kind of like this motel manager--the one who “doesn’t judge people” and is a stickler for warrants?  At least somebody in this county cares about warrants.  Also, those doors are actually really pretty.  Nice colour, and the carved scrollwork designs are nice.
What an odd shot: the one when they’re coming out of Walt’s office after talking to Skeevy McGrossFace and Rosa.  It’s a weird sort of shaky-cam stepping back, just preceding Branch walking, and then turns to follow him when he sit’s on his desk.  But it’s a really different style of shot than I can remember, so much so that it’s a bit jarring, especially after the series of nearly stationary close ups that we just had.  Weird. [18:42-18-50]
Cady!  I haven’t made much note of her costuming before this, but it seems notable that’s she’s only in monocromatics.  Especially next to Fales in muted tones, but still some colour, and surrounded by the colourful grafitti of the alley where her mother was stabbed.  Nice way of setting her apart from everything.
SHEEPIES!  Ooooo, that wagon is so cool.  Ah dang, the way that Sal corrects Walt’s pronunciation of his brother’s name is so gloriously passive aggressive.  Good for you, my dude.  Names are important, and people should have the respect to make the effort to get them right.
Aaaaaand Walt, the definition of Do, Don’t Tell, just shoves the guy to keep him from drinking the possibly dangerous water, rather than, like, using his words.  Walt’s gonna Walt.
Iiiiiiiii am a mess, truly.  It cuts to an architectural model and I start giggling like a 6th grader, because I know it’s going to be a Jacob scene.  He’s not even on screen yet, ffs.  HANDS.  I’m fine.  Totally fine.  (That’s totally a lie.  I just rewound to the beginning of the scene because I kept giggling too much to pay attention.  What the hell.)  First time we’ve seen one of the chips, which at this point must be a marketing mock-up, since nothing is built yet.  And he actually types, not just doing the hunt-and-peck thing that is sometimes easier on a tablet.
Looking at the weaving that is up on his wall (maybe a rug?) I’m hoping that the prop people actually did buy from Northern Cheyenne artisans.  They apparently did most of their filming in New Mexico, so I hope they made the effort to get the patterns right, and buy from the actual tribe they’re supposed to be portraying, I guess?  And now I’m distracted by the fact that the random hanging light behind Jacob is at a weird angle?
Look, ever since I realized that the “Hey,” that Jacob does is apparently just A (thanks to it also happening in That Damned Xmas Movie) I am endlessly amused (and charmed) whenever Jacob does it.  I don’t know why it makes me so happy, but it does.  (This is legitimately embarrassing.  How much trouble I am having focusing.  Beyond my normal focus issues, which, as shown above, are already impressive.  Because thiiiiirst.)
“My boys at the lumber yard did just throw you a campaign rally.”  I love how Jacob is basically apparently not just his secret angel-investor, but also a sneaky campaign manager.  Did Branch just think shit like the rally just happened?  He’s not fricking Ferris Bueller; somebody organizes those.  And apparently it’s either Jacob himself, or someone who Jacob appointed to do so.
“I thought you were just a casino developer.”  You have noooo clue, Brancheroo.  “I prefer to remain a silent partner.  White people get nervous when Indians start taking back their land.”  Oooooope.  Especially interesting because there are previsions for the Tribal Council to purchase land to be Tribal land (Section 6 of Article IX of the Tribal Constitution), but this seems more along the lines of personal acquisition.  Though maybe not, because “on the board” doesn’t necessarily equate to being the owner.
The set up of Jacob’s office is so interesting.  Functionally for the show, it’s probably for better shooting angles, so that we can see more of Jacob behind the desk while Branch is sitting in front of it, but from an in-the-verse decorating standpoint, bit’s fascinating.  He has this focal wall with the gorgeous wall hanging, flanked by floor to ceiling window, but instead of having his desk centered on that wall and directly facing the bulk of the room, it’s at an almost 45 degree angle on a huge rug, and it’s so unexpected.  I kind of love it, and want to analyze it for days.  Also worth noting is that pride of place is given to the  Hotamétaneo’o headdress which is on a stand centered in front of the wall hanging.
How fucking tired must Jacob be.  He’s used to Walt... Walting, but then Branch comes in, who he is literally spending his own money to support in his bid for sheriff, and he pulls the same shit of assuming that he’s behind Bad Shit.  And then Branch frames it as “bad P.R,” so he’s there to “discuss it with [him] privately.”  And then basically threatens him with Walt.  I swear.  ...there is something a little amusing about Walt being used as the stick in the carrot and a stick method of negotiating.  He certainly is enough of a blunt object most of the time.
Oh fuck you so much, Branch.  Playing the “can’t give you details about an ongoing investigation” card as though you have some professional or moral leg to stand on after basically blackmailing Jacob with Walt’s vendetta is just such shit.  You don’t get to look down your nose at Jacob’s quid pro quo pragmatism when you were the one who came to him for financial backing.  You sanctimonious little shitheel.  If you didn’t want to deal with Jacob, you shouldn’t have taken his $100k.  He’s a business man, and you’re an investment, and not a quixotic one.
“He’s probably the only person to have died from [hemlock] since Socrates.”  And then Walt’s incredulous look and her, “Alright, I googled it,” were subtle comedic gold.
Ooooooo, that was a nice little shot.  Not quite foreshadowing, but showing Branch’s suspicions and sort of inviting the audience to share them.  Walt says his bit about the Army poisoning “Indian wells” to kill them off and get their land, and then we see Branch fiddling with the Four Arrows chip and narrow his eyes considering and slip the chip into his pocket, looking suspicious.  It’s a really neat little moment of visual storytelling, no lines, literally three seconds long, just sort of snuck in there, but super effective.  Really nicely done.
And again, Cady is in monochromatics.  And, shit, just gave Fales Henry’s name.  Aaaaaand right after, she realizes that the junkie was killed and realizes that it had to have been one of her dads (or so she thinks).
Sal’s monologue in the cell is a good emotional payoff that plays off of Vic’s comments towards the beginning of the episode.  I see the narrative worth of her making them, and how the structure of the episode benefits from it; but seeing those writing elements from the outside of the show doesn’t make me able to like her as a character who said them in-universe.  And then the threat Sal makes of vengeance on someone who killed one he loves also underscores the stuff with Cady’s investigation into her mother’s death very well.  As much as I gripe about the writing *cough S6 cough finale cough* there really is some damn good writing in this show, and I don’t show enough appreciation for it.
Huh, and now there’s a sort of inverse of that weird shot preceding Branch from earlier, but this one is much more effective and less off-putting.  This one [33:00] precedes Walt as he walks back into his office, still a medium close up, but it’s much steadier, and the way it is framed, it does quite a bit to convey his mindset, and he walks out of the shot and we see the three deputies following him in like baffled ducklings, making the shot serve another purpose, too.  Which honestly makes that earlier shaky follow shot of Branch even weirder, because this one was so much better.
And then Walt has his creepy little speech about how someone would want to watch the light go out of their eyes and not caring if you get caught.  I do appreciate that when he’s talking about the psychology of killing with poison he doesn’t just call it a “woman’s method” which media so often does.  It might have been the writers keeping who the killer was abstruse, but it was still more gender neutral.  Especially since according to The U. S. Department of Justice's report on Homicide Trends in the United States (1980 to 2008) of all poison killers in that time period, 60.5 percent were male and 39.5 percent female.  (Table 5 on page 10.)  So that long held idea that even Sherlock Holmes was written to have that poison is “of course” a woman’s weapon is pretty crap.
Awwww, the good old days when Walt paid attention to animals.  ...I am still bizarrely salty about the fact that he never named his horse.  What a good pupper!
And then we have a classic example of Sneaky!Walt, which always takes people quite by surprise, because he’s usually as subtle as Miley Cyrus.
Tumblr media
Also because when he does this, it tends to be pretty fucked up, in a Make Someone Think They’re About To Die way.  And then he does His Thing, where he just lays out all of his suppositions, with no proof, only the terror of her thinking that she’s been poisoned and you’re withholding medical intervention to get her to confess.  And is, irritatingly, correct about his theories.  But I’m pretty sure this qualifies as coercing a confession?  She thinks she’s fucking dying.  Even Vic looks at him like it’s fucked up, and her moral compass where he’s concerned is... skewed.
They way this reveal was played out, (”How’d they find her so fast?”  “Hard to say...”) is somewhat ambiguous as to whether it’s supposed to be that Branch went there to tell Jacob or not, but I kind of doubt it?  I kind of figure that the meeting that Jacob was having when Branch rambled in was already with Rosa signing the paperwork.  Jacob is smart.  So, HAH.  Little good your “can’t comment on an ongoing investigation” schtick did.
And then the news that someone in law enforcement has been asking after Henry.
“Lizzie was waiting for you here tonight.  You should talk to her, Walt.  She seems to think she is in a relationship with you.”  ....omgs.  The tone.  I mean, yes, the blisteringly glorious SASS, but how does one not read that as incredibly shippy?  Howwwww?
“You are an honest man, Walt.  I would like you to stay that way.”  Oh Henry.  When did you decide that you weren’t?  Was it when you hired Hector?  Or was there something before?  ...I feel like there were things before that.  Hello darkness my old friend.
“It is not your job to protect me.”  “It is my job...”  THOSE WERE THE DAYS.  Those were the fucking daaaaaays.  And the emotions on Henry’s face after Walt says, “That was my right,” as though Henry cheated him of something.  I am so deep in OT3 feels I cannot even see daylight here.  The feels of them having been an OT3 and then Walt pulling this shit, and Henry having to defend his own “right” to avenge Martha?  It wrecks me.  “A good woman was murdered.  A bad man is dead.  End of story.”

Global inventory of wonderful beer: What I drink is not wine, but creativity!
Isn't beer just yeast, barley, water and hops? Well, it's also right and wrong-for some beer, this statement is simply wrong. The brains of the beer brewer are too big, and sometimes the brewed beer-how to put it-is quite "interesting". The following wonderful beers are the best examples.
Collagen beer Speaking of weirdness, the Japanese definitely do their part. Suntory launched a collagen beer called Precious, which is said to remove wrinkles left by the years and make you look young and invincible. This 5-degree Talrag comes in 330ml cans and contains 2 grams of collagen per can.
Cat Shit Beer You must have heard of the famous cat feces coffee: a civet living in the tropics eats coffee cherries and is discharged from the other side of the body. The action of stomach acid can make coffee beans produce a different flavor. Beer Geek Brunch Weasel from Megele is a breakfast Shitao with an alcohol level of 10.9-be careful, the wine is full of strength.
Bloody (Mary) Beer Well, strictly speaking, it is not based on Bloody Mary, a good brunch partner. However, Short's Brewing Company of Bel Air, Michigan does use cherry tomatoes in its Bloody Beer, as well as black pepper and celery. Rapeseed, wasabi, and dill, so it’s similar to Bloody Mary. This "Cool Beer from Bel Air" has long been discontinued, with an alcohol content of 7, and an international bitterness index of 40.
Fossil beer The Lost Rhino Brewery in Virginia and PaleoQuest, a non-profit organization that promotes the excavation of dinosaur fossils rather than food trends, have teamed up to create a beer that will attract attention to science. They collected yeast from whale fossils 35 million years ago and made a 5.5-degree beer named Bone Dusters Amber Ale. Cool! It's a pity that the yeast is not collected from the fossils of the long extinct rhino or Tyrannosaurus.
Sheep dung beer After reading this list, you will find that Icelandic brewers really have a lot of free time and a whimsical spirit of adventure. The Borg Brugghus brewery is a good example: due to lack of wood, they lighted the sheep dung pile to smoke and roast the malt when making Fenrir Nr26. American IPA smoked and roasted with sheep dung, alcohol content 6, and international bitterness index 63.
Beer older than whale fossils Fossil Fuels Brewing Co has a product called AY108, which uses yeast found in bee fossils. This bee was wrapped in pine resin and turned into amber in the Eocene Eocene 45 million years ago (is it so shocking that it can’t close its mouth?). Professor Raul Cano figured out how to separate the yeast from above, and then wondered how to make the best use of it. Finally, he chose to brew beer instead of bread. The first result is this Dan Aier named after yeast, and there is also a Saisen.
Beer made with money The evil twins collaborated with the Norwegian craft brewer Lervig Aktiebryggeri in the port of Stavanger. The raw material is real banknotes. What's even more exaggerated is that they threw some frozen pizza into it. The alcohol content is 17.5 degrees.
Heavy beer from the toilet The Danish government and Norrebro Bryghus brewery are really fighting for environmental protection, and they even have the idea of urinating. They recovered a large amount of urine from the famous Roskilde Music Festival and used it to brew a Pearson called Pisner. Do you want to contribute to the cause of sustainable development? Then taste the piss of these hippies.
Colorful beer Abashiri Brewery in Hokkaido, Japan uses seaweed and other natural ingredients to brew red, blue and green beer. They also used beer and excess milk to produce a malt drink called Bilk. Apart from other things, at least it is colorful.
Beer made from sewage The sewage in the sewer sounds as disgusting as dirty waste oil. I'm afraid no one can drink anything made of it. The Jushi Brewery in San Diego brewed an IPA using recycled water provided by the city's water purification project. This Dan Air, called Full Circle, is limited to five barrels, but it may indicate the future of beer brewing.
Roald Dahl Beer Yeast is ubiquitous and can be collected everywhere, so why not collect some yeast from the custom desk of the late children's literature writer Roald Dahl? London creative company Bompas & Parr entrusted this task to 40FT Brewery to brew Odious Ale for a pop-up restaurant based on Dahl's "Stupid Couple".
Beer from the moon Dogfish Head Brewery is keen to challenge the limit, but often thinks too crazy and circumvents itself in, but the time when they ventured into space may be their most rebellious exploration so far. With the help of the company that makes spacesuits for NASA, they got some dust on the moon, which was taken from NASA where the moon landed on the moon—well, no more obscurations, it’s on the moon— —Collected, and then spilled into this limited edition beer called Oktoberfest. Alcohol 5, International Bitterness Index 25.
Elephant Poop Beer The Japanese brewery Sankt Gallen wanted to brew a beer that will be unforgettable, so he thought of elephant poo. How does it work? They fed coffee cherries to elephants living in Thailand’s wildlife sanctuary, and then brewed a "chocolate shitao" called Un, Koon Kuro (a pun for "poop" in Japanese) from elephant dung coffee beans. It was also selected for sale on April Fool's Day, but this is not a joke.
Beer as dark as ink Cuttlefish juice—or more precisely the juice of cuttlefish, squid and octopus, or the juice of cephalopods—can be said to be everywhere now, so you can’t help thinking that these animals are scared when they face the extinction of humans. What is it like? Anyway, the master brewer of 3 Sheeps in Wisconsin created a black IPA called Nimble Lips Noble Tongue No3, using cuttlefish juice.
Too private beer We are all adults, but the Internet will always surprise us head-on, especially when you see a page on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo for the world’s first vaginal beer fundraising-this one is called Bottled Instinct's acid ale uses lactic acid extracted from a Czech model. We don't know if anyone will drink it, because this project has not even raised 1% of the final goal of 150,000 euros, and it should be a joke on April Fools' Day at all? Otherwise, it really makes people get goosebumps.
16. Add a whole chicken to beer
Over the years, the rooster Al almost cast a layer of mystery. It is said that it was very popular in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. In fact, it is an ordinary Al, but a whole rooster was added during the brewing process. Hand Pulled Cock Ale from Willimantic Brewing Co in Connecticut-7% alcohol, only available in barrels-is a modern version of Cock Ale, but its name still implies that old joke (you got it).
Fried chicken beer As the song in "Grease" sings, fried chicken and beer are good partners, so why not add some chicken to the beer? Veil Brewing Co of Richmond, Virginia, and the evil twins teamed up to brew chicken beer. Their Fried Fried Chicken Chicken DIPA uses a lot of Fried Chicken Nuggets.
Sheep brain beer Philadelphia's Dock Street Brewing Company brewed Dock Street Walker to pay tribute to "The Walking Dead," but it was more terrifying than zombies, using smoked lamb brains. This American Pale Shitao is 7.2 degrees, and cranberries are added to create a touch of acidity.
Whale testicle beer Icelandic microbrewer Steoji has launched Hvalur 2, which is an upgraded version of Hvalur 1, which was produced in cooperation with the whaling company Hvalur and caused a huge controversy due to the addition of full whale meat (fish meat and fish bones). As the second seasonal crossover, it uses whale testicles smoked and roasted with sheep dung—well, one is added to each winemaking cycle.
Masculine beer The Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout of Wynkoop Brewing in Denver was originally just an April Fools' Day joke, but I didn't expect it to become a reality because of the public's enthusiastic response. With an alcohol content of 7.5, three cow testicles are added to each barrel-this "gourmet" is nicknamed Rocky Mountain Oysters locally. A set of two cans is quite appropriate.
Bull Heart Beer Portland's Upright Brewing and Burnside Brewing collaborated to produce this Captain Beefheart. The ingredients include 27 kilograms of charcoal grilled beef heart and a lot of spices. Similar products include the Burke In The Bottle, a collaboration between Jim Koch of Boston Beer Company and chef David Burke.
Sunday barbecue beer Conwy Brewery in Wales caters to the close relationship between locals and sheep and brews a lamb beer. Sunday Toast is a Victorian-style Porter beer with the juice from slow roasting of Welsh lamb. Perhaps lamb-ic is more appropriate.
Truffle beer Truffles are very expensive. Using them to brew beer seems a bit risky, but some people have succeeded. Chicago Moody Tongue's black truffle crumbs Pearson is highly sought after in some of the top high-end restaurants in the United States, while Miki Le has chosen to use black truffles to brew a dark beer called The Forager.
Stag semen beer Green Man Pub in Wellington, New Zealand, and local brewer Choice Bros brewed a beer with stag semen, which caused a huge sensation for a while. We will not continue to discuss the name Lu Jing Shitao to obtain such a subtle beer, let's stop here.
Mushroom beer In the past few years, the brewery seems to have used all the mushrooms imaginable. Jester King of Austin, Texas used locally grown oyster mushrooms in this Snorkel. 4.5 Alcohol, Goss style.
Oysters (really real this time) beer The encounter between Oyster and Shi Tao gave birth to many interesting stories. We used to drink Shitao while sucking oysters beautifully. Now we use oyster shells to clarify the beer, or put them in a boiling pot, or even throw whole oysters into it. Flying Dog Pearl Necklace Oyster Shitao did just that.
Natural green beer Free Tail Brewing Co of San Antonio, Texas adds blue-green algae to a 4.2-degree rye white beer to give it a charming blue-green color. If the advertisements of Mandalay Brewing in Myanmar and Red Dot Brewery in Singapore are accurate, Spirulina beer has another magical effect-anti-aging.
Seaweed beer Bladderwrack is a good name for beer, but it is actually a kind of seaweed. Williams Bros Brew in Alloa, Scotland added it to its own Kelpie Seaweed Ale. This Scottish Groot-an ancient beer style-is intended to recreate the traditional style of beer from the coastal regions of Scotland.
Real gold beer We have all drunk golden Al, but have you ever drunk gold? Golden Queen Bee brewed by Golden Bee Beer contains edible 24K gold leaf. There is no need to throw gold like this, but if you can get another bottle of The Lost Abbey's Gift Of The Magi-a golden Al with frankincense and myrrh, then you must be full of every cell in your body The joy of Christmas.
Pizza beer Mamma Mia Pizza Beer is produced by the Chicago Pizza Beer Company. The ingredients include Margarita Pizza soaked in malt. We don’t know if the crust is Chicago-style.
Donut beer Voodoo Donuts Maple Syrup Bacon Al is the first beer launched by Voodoo Donut Bakery in collaboration with Rogue Brewery, also in Oregon. The series includes six products so far. They want to use these beers to reproduce the best-selling single-product flavors of this bakery in Portland. The latest flavors currently launched are Guerrilla Grape and Mango Spaceman.
Pig head beer Mangalica Pig Porter uses the head and bones of Mangalica Pig. This breed of pig is quite precious and is known as Kobe beef in pork. Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City, Missouri uses whole pig heads when brewing this beer, and even the eyeballs are still in the eye sockets. The winery also brews a series of more delicious pork pie beers, with raw materials including whole pork pie from a local bakery.
Expired bread beer The raw material of toast air is leftover bread that cannot be eaten, and it aims to eliminate food waste. All the profits from this beer brewed with excess bread are donated to charitable organizations, and even a factory is set up in the Bronx, New York. The recipe is public, so you can try it yourself with the leftover bread you eat.
Just put your crying beer There is a resonance between Chili Control and Beer Mania, which is why countless beers have combined these two things in one in pursuit of a mixed effect. The grimace killer at the Twisted Pine Brewery in Colorado—named after the Wudang rapist of the same name—uses six different varieties of peppers. Among them, the hottest pepper is the Devil Pepper (also known as Broken Soul Pepper). Scoville's index exceeds 1 million-the pepper is only about 2000. You can imagine how spicy it is.
Bearded beer Rogge Beard Beer can be regarded as one of the most weird beers in the world. Brewmaster John Maier extracts yeast from his beard and brews an American wild ale. Maier once vowed that he would never shave his beard, so the raw material of this beer can really be said to be

Then it’s off to the legendary Larsen’s Fish Market, where we’ll select fish from the freshest catch of the day. Then it’s time to harvest vegetables and cook up a succulent seafood feast at North Tabor Farm in their custom-made wood-fired oven. On the menu: wood-fired fluke with brown butter and oysters; a classic green salad with shallot vinaigrette; and potato and fennel gratin with green tomatoes and cilantro.
Episode 12: Boston, MA: Gibbet Hill
This week’s episode of Moveable Feast with Relish reveals Boston’s undeniable passion for creating truly epic feasts. Host Alex Thomopoulos is joined by two chefs credited with propelling Boston’s Italian food scene to new heights - James Beard Award-winning Chef Karen Akunowicz and the only Black chef-owner in Boston’s fine dining scene, Douglass Williams. Chef Akunowicz, a pasta guru, takes us to One Mighty Mill to source the secret to her award-winning pasta - local, fresh-milled wheat. Then it’s off to the picture-perfect farm Gibbet Hill for fresh vegetables. Finally, it’s time to cook and feast. On the menu: farro pappardelle with rabbit, figs, prosciutto and mushrooms; roasted duck with farm vegetables and golden raisin-poppy seed sauce; focaccia garlic bread; and blueberry-concord grape shortcakes with mascarpone cream.
Episode 13: Boston, MA: Courtyard
This week on Moveable Feast with Relish, Host Alex Thomopoulos meets up with two of Boston’s most innovative chefs, James Beard Award winner Chef Jamie Bissonnette and rising star Chef David Bazirgan. Field trips include a visit to Lookout Farm to harvest a fruit once reserved for the nobility, the Hosui Asian pear. Then it’s off to the pioneering Boston Smoked Fish to source their famous smoked salmon bacon. With ingredients in hand, the chefs head back to Chef Bazirgan’s restaurant, Bambara, to cook up a courtyard brunch. On the menu: smoked haddock with green papaya and apple salad; classic potato roesti with salmon bacon, cider-poached eggs, and harissa hollandaise; and an Asian pear and cranberry clafoutis.

More from Moveable Feast with Relish
'For reasons sufficient to the writer,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in notes for a preface to his collection of about-to-be-posthumous Parisian fragments (a preface later pieced together by Mary Hemingway as if from Cuba in 1960), “many places, people, observations and impressions have been left out of this book”:
There is no mention of the Stade Anastasie where the boxers served as waiters at the tables set out under the trees and the ring was in the garden. Nor of training with Larry Gains, nor the great twenty-round fights at the Cirque d’Hiver. Nor of such good friends as Charlie Sweeny, Bill Bird and Mike Strater … It would be fine if all these were in this book but we will have to do without them for now.
This tactic of teasing the customer with the hint of splendors withheld—like Dr. Watson’s making us wonder about the untold Holmes adventure of the giant rat of Sumatra—was rounded off with another piece of coquetry, when “Papa” closed by saying:
If the reader prefers, this book may be regarded as fiction. But there is always the chance that such a book of fiction may throw some light on what has been written as fact.
This challenge may or may not have been intended as literal. But the first thing to say about the “restored” edition so ably and attractively produced by Patrick and Seán Hemingway is that it does live up to its billing, in that at last it gives us the Stade Anastasie and Larry Gains (a handsome black Canadian heavyweight now lost to history) and thus manages that fusion of food writing and pugilism that is somehow associated with Americans in Paris, and not just because of Papa and A. J. Liebling. The new story “A Strange Fight Club” is well worth having, too. It pictures Larry Gains’s Parisian opponent thus:
The new heavy weight was a local boy who had been employed carrying parts of carcasses in the stockyards until he had an accident which affected his reasoning power.
This capture of the elemental brutishness of boxing—and by one of its aficionados—does a good deal to reaffirm Hemingway’s sometimes mocked reputation as a master of the terse and muscular sentence.
There has always been much speculation about how much the redaction of A Moveable Feast is a product or consequence of its relation to the sequence of Hemingway’s marriages. It was largely written about his time with Hadley, touches on his defection to the arms of Pauline, and after his suicide was pasted together by Mary. If we make the common assumption that Mary desired to downplay her predecessors where possible (there is no way to write the lovely Hadley out of the script altogether), then this would furnish an explanation for the reappearance of two fragments in particular: the marvelous little study of Hemingway’s outings with his firstborn son, titled “The Education of Mr. Bumby,” and the intriguing episode “Secret Pleasures,” in which Hemingway writes with undisguised sexual excitement about the good and bad “hair days” that he shared with his first spouse.

The True Costs and Benefits of Fracking

The Bumby pages are frankly sentimental but nonetheless somehow dry, while the little boy’s attempts to be a man in two languages, and to keep up with his father’s enjoyment of café society, are simply charming. (Once you have heard the proprietress of Shakespeare and Company grandly referred to as “Silver Beach,” you are doomed to remember her that way. And you will perhaps also recall Bumby’s announcement of what he has learned from his nanny’s husband, Touton: “Tu sais, Papa, que les femmes pleurent comme les enfants pissent?” A different version of Papa, to be sure, but one worth having.)
Even in this record of spontaneous innocence, however, the chance is not missed to take another sidelong whack at Scott Fitzgerald:
“Monsieur Fitzgerald is sick Papa?” “He is sick because he drinks too much and he cannot work.” “Does he not respect his métier?” “Madame his wife does not respect it or she is envious of it.” “He should scold her.” “It is not so simple.”
Again, there is nothing to complain of here in point of terseness and economy, but it sent me back again to that supremely unsatisfactory moment in the original collection, in the chapter titled “A Matter of Measurements,” when Fitzgerald invites Hemingway to lunch at Michaud’s restaurant and tells him: Todoist and siri.
“Zelda said that the way I was built I could never make any woman happy and that was what upset her originally. She said it was a matter of measurements. I have never felt the same since she said that and I have to know truly.”
By his own account, Hemingway thereupon leads the author of The Diamond As Big As the Ritz out to the men’s room, conducts a brief inspection, and reassures (or, to be more exact, fails to reassure) his pal that all is well, and that he’s looking down on his penis, literally and figuratively, rather than taking the sidelong perspective. I have never trusted this story, if only because—as Hemingway himself later admits—“it is not basically a question of the size in repose. It is the size that it becomes.” So, unless the viewing in the Michaud pissoir was of an engorged and distended “Scottie”—which it plainly was not—then Papa was offering Fitzgerald a surrogate form of consolation. And was then planning to write about it! (That Zelda was a lethal bitch who wanted her husband at least to fail and perhaps to die is for once not confirmed by another new inclusion, “Scott and His Parisian Chauffeur,” where she is pictured as behaving really quite gracefully under pressure and where the same Mike Strater whose absence was deplored in the original preface is also shown in a fairly good light on a train from Princeton to Philadelphia.)
I suppose that another way of betraying a friend of whom it’s thinkable that you were jealous, and who would, as it happens, do you the good turn of introducing you to an editor like Maxwell Perkins and a publisher like Scribner, would be to write about him thus:
Scott was a man then who looked like a boy with a face between handsome and pretty. He had very fair wavy hair, a high forehead, excited and friendly eyes and a delicate long-lipped Irish mouth that, on a girl, would have been the mouth of a beauty (italics mine).
All right so far, perhaps, even with that emphasis noted, but then: “The mouth worried you until you knew him and then it worried you more.” And this in the second paragraph of the first page of the chapter about his friend—the one he is later on bluffly cheering up about his sand-castle masculinity …
It might be trite to pick on the verb worried, but undue or conspicuous anxiety about such matters has been known to furnish a clue about the author himself, and Hemingway more or less forces one to contemplate this very contingency. The brilliance of the anecdote in “A Strange Enough Ending,” in which the author bids adieu to Gertrude Stein and her partner, is that it is almost the sound of the other shoe dropping after that rugged earlier moment in “Miss Stein Instructs,” in which Stein dismisses male homosexuality as truly and horribly unnatural. Hemingway writes,
I heard someone speaking to Miss Stein as I had never heard one person speak to another; never, anywhere, ever. Then Miss Stein’s voice came pleading and begging, saying, “Don’t, pussy. Don’t. Don’t, please don’t. I’ll do anything, pussy, but please don’t do it. Please don’t. Please don’t, pussy.”
As someone wrote about Dorothy Parker’s short story “Big Blonde,” the talent (I won’t say genius) here lies in getting the reader’s imagination to shoulder the bulk of the work. A pretty revenge, I dare say, if slightly and crudely rubbed in a few lines later when Miss Stein is described as resembling “a Roman emperor.”
And so to the excerpt that has continued to excite perhaps the most comment. Closing the original chapter in which Miss Stein expresses her loathing for male perversion, Hemingway writes that he went home to Hadley and “in the night we were happy with our own knowledge we already had and other new knowledge we had acquired in the mountains.” Read these words alongside the following lines originally excised from the restored chapter titled “Secret Pleasures”: “When we lived in Austria in the winter we would cut each other’s hair and let it grow to the same length.” Presuming these to have been the same mountains, or even perhaps assuming slightly different peaks, the whole concept of matching coiffureappears to Hemingway to have been almost unbearably exciting:
Hemingway A Moveable Feast Quotes
“If you don’t think about it maybe it will grow faster. I’m so glad you remembered to start it so early.” We looked at each other and laughed and then she said one of the secret things … “How long will it take?” “Maybe four months to be just the same.” “Really?” “Really.” “Four months more?” “I think so.” We sat and she said something secret and I said something secret back.
Hemingway A Moveable Feast Pdf
Gosh. And this, as some addicts will already know, is merely an amuse-bouche for the main course of another unfinished Hemingway effort, “The Garden of Eden,” at the end of which it seems that hair must be discarded altogether, and shaved heads become the sexual totem. Not even Adam and Eve went so far in their admission of guilt and nakedness, but perhaps a man whose mother once dressed him as a girl and trimmed his crop to suit, and crooned to him as “Ernestine,” had some old scores to settle in the androgyny column.
What is it exactly that explains the continued fascination of this rather slight book? Obviously, it is an ur-text of the American enthrallment with Paris. To be more precise, it is also a skeleton key to the American literary fascination with Paris (and contains some excellent tips for start-up writers, such as the advice to stop working while you still have something left to write the next day). There are the “wouldn’t be without, even if you don’t quite trust” glimpses of the magnetic Joyce and the personable Pound and the apparently wickedly malodorous Ford Madox Ford. Then there are the moments of amusingly uncynical honesty, as when Stein and Toklas met Ernest and Hadley and “forgave us for being in love and being married—time would fix that.” The continued currency of that useless expression the lost generation becomes even more inexplicable when it is traced to a stupid remark made by Gertrude Stein’s garage manager, and such quotable fatuity, however often consecrated by repeated usage, is always worth following to its source. Most of all, though, I believe that A Moveable Feast serves the purpose of a double nostalgia: our own as we contemplate a Left Bank that has since become a banal tourist enclave in a Paris where the tough and plebeian districts are gone, to be replaced by seething Muslim banlieues all around the periphery; and Hemingway’s at the end of his distraught days, as he saw again the “City of Light” with his remaining life still ahead of him rather than so far behind.
Hemingway The Sun Also Rises
NB: This book is best read or reread in the company of a beautiful book of photographs and quotations: Hemingway’s Paris, edited by Robert Gajdusek and published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1978.

MOVING CONTINENTS: HOW WE ENDED UP IN TORONTO, CANADA!
In a (partly) unexpected pivot of life, we found ourselves moving across oceans this summer to Toronto, Canada our new home. Here’s the back story to what brought us to Canada and a little advice for those considering moving to Toronto too. Plus.. what’s next for us!
A New Chapter: Moving to Toronto.
Rewind a few years and Canada was not on my list of possible places to live. Not because of a lack of appreciation for Canada, but rather I’d always felt the pull of other places more strongly. That and Canada is not the most budget friendly place to travel! Asia always has – and still does – pull at my heartstrings, and my desire to head East from Europe had been stronger than my curiosity about what might lie in wait in the Americas.
But that all changed last year.
From the moment Ravi and I met, a move to Canada was on the cards. Several months in to his application for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada, we decided we could not (or did not want to) handle the idea of being on opposite sides of the world. Weeks of conversations and visa research later, we realised we could both head to Canada. One month later my working holiday visa rolled in.
Tumblr media
As the temperatures and humidity in summertime Mumbai steadily climbed into sweat-covered-all-the-time figures, we waited eagerly for news of Ravi’s permanent residency, but still nothing. Canada’s immigration website helpfully reminded us that the process could take anything up to two years, meanwhile friends received their visas after six months. After what felt like years of waiting and anxiously hoping his visa would arrive before my Indian one expired, we got the confirmation that his visa had been approved… on my birthday!
Within a few weeks we were leaving Mumbai.
Why Canada? People often ask us. Why come to Canada when it’s the other side of the world for both of you? The short answer is immigration policies. Yes Canada we do love you, but ultimately it is easier for us both to live here than it would be in many other countries, including my home country of the UK. The sad truth is that when you have a G7 passport, the world is your oyster. When you hold a passport from a “developing” country… not so much.
Moving to Toronto: First Impressions
After asking why we moved to Canada, the quick follow up is “Why Toronto?”. For us, that was a head over heart decision. Our hearts called us to the mountains, wild pacific ocean and the west coast of British Colombia, but our heads held us back. Toronto is Canada’s financial hub with most job and networking opportunities, is more affordable than Vancouver (although far from cheap – see below), is English speaking (whereas Montreal is pretty French) – and perhaps most importantly – Toronto is on Eastern Time (making it slightly easier to call home at a humane hour).
Our first impressions of Toronto were not from Toronto itself. Rather we landed in the suburban town of Burlington about an hour outside of Toronto along the shores of Lake Ontario. A friend from Europe – to whom we shall forever be grateful – invited us to stay while we found our feet – and this gave us an opportunity to explore life beyond Toronto’s city limits, which was the perfect introduction to Ontario for us. Reassured by the friendly faces we had met, a few weeks later we moved to Toronto itself.
Here are some of our first impressions.
Toronto is an easy city to navigate for newcomers – geographically at least. Following the North-American style grid system, it’s hard to get too lost. Although as we surveyed the quiet streets for places to eat downtown in our first few days, we started to wonder – where is everyone? Where are all the coffeeshops and eateries? We soon found our answer: they’re below street level. Toronto’s downtown core is linked by a sprawling underground PATH system of walkways – linking malls, foodcourts, shopping and more. It’s all part of keeping warm in the brutal winters. Which brings us to….
The Toronto weather. We arrived in Toronto in June, at the height of summer. Coming fearing the bitter winters that everyone had warned us about, we were not quite prepared for summer days of 30 degrees plus! But that’s what we got. We feel we saw Toronto at its best, and that has helped us (a bit) as we sit here writing this in our winter thermals 😉 As for the winter? Ask us about that in six months.
The Toronto people – or Torontonians – we’d been warned could be a little rude, compared to the average more than friendly Canadian. But we were happy to find the opposite many times. Throughout our first months in Canada we’ve been lucky enough to meet warm people inside the city and outside. Streetcar drivers actually wait for you while running for the tram; pedestrians will help with directions with a warm smile, and we landed on our feet by having the loveliest airbnb hosts we could have hoped for. Despite this being a busy city, it’s got to be one of the few places in the world where people will actually say sorry to you if you bump into them.

Advice for those Thinking of Immigrating to Toronto
Amid the soaring heat and honking of Mumbai’s summer, Canada somehow seemed like the “promised land” to both of us – but of course, it’s not. No place is perfect, not even friendly Canada. On grey days we find ourselves wistfully thinking of English cream teas and meditating on Goa’s beaches at Sunrise – or sipping hot sweet chai at streetside stalls.
Here are just a few of the things we wish we would have known about Toronto, beforehand:
Toronto is Expensive. There’s no two ways about this one. Although Toronto housing is cheaper than Vancouver, that doesn’t mean much. Rental prices are sky high with a tiny but nice 1 bedroom apartment in downtown Toronto going for around 2,000 CAD per month. Plus utilities. Intense competition from other renters means you won’t be able to negotiate that down, either. Many products are imported from the US, making them more expensive, and compared to Europe the compulsory tipping of around 15% for eating out or services hikes up the cost.
The Housing Market is…. Crazy. We live in a condo (apartment) building where the corridors have not been carpeted and the upper floors not finished.. because it’s still under construction! Yet 70% of the units (that are finished ;-)) have been occupied. In other countries, it would be illegal to rent out units in an unfinished building. In Toronto, that’s just the norm – because demand for housing is so high. You won’t get a discount for it either. Everywhere cranes dot the Toronto skyline as construction continues to try and solve for the current lack of housing. It’s known locally as “densification”. So a house with a garden in Toronto? Forget it.
Everyone is lovely in Canada… Except the Immigration Officials. These guys & gals are not to be messed with! Neither of us get stopped or questioned much when entering or exiting countries (luckily) – but in Canada, it’s a whole different level. We’ve never been so grilled about our motives for being in a country (or sent to customs checks so often) as we are in Canada. Just prepare your answers well, and any stories – well, leave them on the plane.
Know that if you’re coming to Canada on PR, you can’t leave the country again until you get your PR Card. We found this out the hard way. Midway through planning our trip to Jordan, we suddenly realised Ravi needed documents to get back into the country: the only acceptable document being a PR card or travel permit. But, turns out those travel permits can only be obtained outside Canada and could take up to 6 months! Not a risk we were willing to take – but in the end the PR card turned up just the day before our flight to Amman. PR cards typically take about 3 months to arrive – but no-one will give you an exact date.
Ontario is Beautiful Too. Mention “Canada” and Lake Louise, Banff, or the Rocky Mountains probably spring to mind. But the truth is, while some of those places are seeing a massive influx of tourists and instagrammers alike, there’s far more of beauty in Canada. Although it may not have mountains, Ontario is home to beautiful lake country a few hours north from Toronto. We were lucky enough to experience Canada day with friends on the beautiful and quiet Stoney lake in a cottage. You don’t need to own a cottage to get in on a the lake action, either – there are plenty of rentals on sites such as Booking.com.
The End of “Nomadism” – and What’s Next for Soul Travel!
Our move to Canada marks the end of an era for us – for now at least. After two years of travelling with no fixed address, I now have a fixed address again. The change has been welcome – the ideal for both of us has always been to travel with a base rather than without one; but little did I expect that base would be Canada.
During our time here we’ll be doing some long over-due catching up on work, blogging, and developing our business that supports marketing for sustainable tourism and lifestyle companies. We’re both really excited to expand our work and help brands that are focused on making sustainable travel easier and more widespread.
We’re also excited to start exploring Canada further, and beyond into the region of the Americas. We’ve already had our first foray into Costa Rica, which did not disappoint! We hope to be heading out to see more of Canada in 2019 (perhaps when the snow starts to thin 😉 ) – and can’t wait to share stories from those journeys with you.

The real secret to cheap family vacations is to be opportunistic
The real secret to cheap family vacations is to be opportunistic. When a friend offers you their cabin on the lake, say yes. Can you have as much fun at the cheaper, closer amusement park? Then that's where you need to be. Do the kids like the idea of cooking dinner over a campfire? Drive right on by that reastaurant. Find out what everyone really enjoys. It's sad to spend MORE on a trip for LESS enjoyment.
Examples Of Cheap Family Vacations
In Michigan, and many other places, you can find reasonable motels on the beach. Cheaper, and usually more scenic, are the numerous campgrounds on the beaches of Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron. You can find these in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and in Ontario, Canada. Below are a couple beach-based vacation ideas.
Treasure Hunting Vacations
Two metal detectors will cost less than a few nights with the family in a hotel. Why not camp near a ghost town or beach, and spend your days hiking, exploring, and hunting buried treasure? We always find interesting things when we take our metal detector to the beach. The kids will love the adventure, and when they get bored with digging up quarters, they have swimming nearby.
Beachcombing Vacations
This is cheap, and the whole family can enjoy it. You can find all sorts of things washed up on the beaches of the Great Lakes and the Oceans. In Michigan, we used to find bouys, parts of houses, and light bulbs. The light bulbs actually worked, a mystery solved years later when a sailor told me they throw them overboard for target practice. We were finding the ones that escaped the bullets.
We also found chunks of coal that had fallen off freighters. We burned them in the campfire. We found balloons with messages attached, sea shells, fossil rocks, odd-shaped driftwood, pieces of styrofoam big enough to use as rafts, and - you get the point.
Camping Vacations
If your family is willing to live in tents for a few days, or if you already own an RV, camping is the cheapest of cheap family vacations. We recently stayed at Williams Landing in Florida for eight days. We stalked alligators, watched armadillos walk through camp, saw a dozen other forms of wildlife, and sat around the fire trading stories with new friends from England and Texas every night. The cost, including the hot showers: zero. Woodall's catalog, available at any big RV dealer has listings of free campgrounds.
Other Cheap Family Vacations
How about a Montana testicle festival? Festival vacations can keep the whole family happy. You'll usually find carnival rides, music, events, contests, and more. By the way, Montana's testicle festivals are billed as family events, but good luck trying to get the kids to eat the "Rocky Mountain Oysters."
Boondocking is all about parking your recreational vehicle where you don't have to pay. If you aren't sure that kids will enjoy being in the middle of nowhere, find a ghost town or other treasure hunting locale. In Arizona, an old Mayan Indian showed us where to look for arrowheads, semi-precious stones, and ancient pottery. The desert is a great place to escape to in the winter, and treasure hunting is cheap vacation as well.
There are many more cheap family vacations, and many ways to keep any vacation cheaper. Stock the cooler with 25 cent pop instead of paying pop-machine prices. Keep the kids full on healthy snacks to avoid restaurants. Be an opportunistic vacationer.

What’s the first thing you think of when you picture Vinny Guadagnino? Yes, we’re thinking good looks too. But we’re really thinking food.
Like us, you’re probably thinking how does he switch gears from the Jersey Shore days to a cooking show? Well, we had the chance to get the scoop from Vinny himself.
To give you some background, Vinny Guadagnino, most well known for his hit reality show, "The Jersey Shore" joined by his mom, Paola will be hitting TV screens on January 31st via The Cooking Channel to premiere their new show “Vinny and Ma Eat America". What’s the premise of the show? Vinny Guadagnino's mom, Paola, is the best cook in their big Italian family, but the problem is she only cooks and eats Italian. Now, Vinny is taking his Ma across the country on a culinary road trip of a lifetime, to taste and discover delicious food she's never tried before. No passport is needed on this trip -- this mother and son adventure is all about eating America!
L25: How did you come up with the concept for this show?
VG: My mom is an amazing Italian cook. Everyone saw her on TV bringing me and my castmates trays of baked ziti like it was nothing. The only problem is she’s never really ventured outside of her own kitchen and tried new things. This concept was my fun way to celebrate food with her while also getting her out of her shell, and taking her on the food road trip of a lifetime.
L25: Will any other past Jersey Shore cast members show up in future episodes?
VG: We didn’t really hit any of the cities where my cast mates live this time, but if we do more episodes and go to their cities, they are definitely showing up. They love my mom more than me!
L25: What kind of food do you eat along your journey?
VG: We really try to get my mom out of her comfort zone and ask her to try new things. So there definitely are some bizarre foods such as Rocky Mountain Oysters, Ethiopian cuisine, insects, alligator, and much more. But it also isn’t hard to shock my mom. She’s never had Ranch dressing, so they aren’t all torturous dishes. We hit up a wide variety of delicious treats along the way.
L25: What was your favorite stop?
VG: My favorite stop was probably catching my own fish in Atlanta and cooking it riverside. I’m into eating fresh food and you can’t get fresher than that. It was also hilarious watching my mom go fly fishing.
L25: And your moms?
VG: My mom was a huge fan of Nashville hot chicken.
L25: Do you have any unique recipes you can share with us?
VG: My mom doesn’t tell anyone her recipes. I always say that she’s going to have the worst cookbook. It will list a few ingredients and then be a bunch of blank pages. But in her defense, she doesn’t really measure anything out.
Be sure to tune into “Vinny and Ma Eat America” on The Cooking Channel January 31st! We’ll definitely be watching.

Million-Dollar Housing Boom: Cities Where Seven-Figure Listings Have Skyrocketed
bluejayphoto/iStock; realtor.com
Time was, a million dollars seemed to evoke so much to everyday Americans. Swanky vacations in the French Riviera. Bespoke suits and garages filled with Bentleys and Mercedes-Benz roadsters. Corporate titans sipping champagne (mixed with the tears of oppressed workers). And perhaps one thing most of all: big, beautiful, luxury homes.
But let’s get back to present-day reality. A million bucks, however impressive a sum, is no longer synonymous with mansions, or even particularly high-end housing, in much of the country. In fact, there’s now a huge discrepancy in what you can get for a tidy seven-figure price tag across the United States. In Atlanta, it could indeed net you a gigantic mansion in the exclusive suburbs. But in San Francisco, a seven-figure check barely gets you a compact condo with one bathroom.
One thing’s for sure: With a housing shortage steadily pushing prices higher, the share of homes listed for $1 million and over is steadily on the rise. It increased from 3.2% to 4.3% from the first quarter of 2014 to the first quarter of 2017.
In large swaths of the country, a cool million has mostly come to represent the new standard for good, upper-middle-class housing. “In more markets than ever before, the million-dollar mark is the new benchmark for that green lawn and white picket fence,” says Javier Vivas, manager of the realtor.com® economic research team.
So where are the markets for million-dollar homes growing the fastest?
To find out, our data team ranked more than 900 metropolitan areas. For each metro, we compared the percentage of homes that cost upward of $1 million in the first quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2014, to see how they’d changed over the past three years.
Our emphasis was on growth, not just luxury. So to rule out metros that were already uber-wealthy—resort towns like Aspen, CO, or go-go urban meccas like San Francisco—we filtered out markets that already had more than 10% of million-dollar listings in 2014. For geographical diversity, we also limited our list to two metros in every state.
Million-dollar questions. Million-dollar babies. Million. Dollar. Listings. So where can you find the most new members of housing’s million-dollar club? Grab your checkbook, and let’s take a look.
1. Denver, CO
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 9.4% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 3.3% Million-dollar growth: 6.1%
The blazing-hot housing market in Denver is pushing middle-class homes into a price category not long ago reserved for luxury estates. Nearly 1 in 10 homes in metro Denver was listed for more than $1 million in the first quarter of 2017.
What’s making it happen? “The secret is out that Denver is a wonderful place to live,” says Jeff Plous, a local real estate agent from One Realty. A booming tech scene, gorgeous scenery with plenty of outdoor recreation possibilities, and yep, even legalized recreational marijuana have conspired to make Denver the new place to be.
“Lots of Californians are moving here,” Pious says. “They sold their homes for multi-million dollars, bought another one here for $1 million, and still have plenty of cash left in the bank.”
Neighborhoods south and east of downtown are packed with big-ticket single-family homes, ranging from $1 million to $10 million. Until recently, neighborhoods in the northwest of the city, where humble bungalows house working-class families, remained surprisingly affordable. But as ever-rising tides of young professionals flood in, flyers offering to buy homes for cash have proliferated, and million-dollar custom homes with high-end finishes are selling faster than discounted Rocky Mountain oysters.
2. Santa Rosa, CA
Picturesque downtown Santa Rosa, CA
John Elk/Getty Images
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 14.1% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 8.1% Million-dollar growth: 6%
As housing refugees from San Francisco flood the market of Santa Rosa, one hour to the north, the local home prices are skyrocketing. The rise in million-dollar listings in this wine country hamlet has been slowly building for the past five years, but the steady drip has become a torrent now, due to the booming tech biz.
“We have a lot of people who work remotely, or they go to the office twice a week,” says real estate agent Kimberly Sethavanish from Kimberly James Real Estate. “They’d rather live here and have a little bit more land than [buy] a 800-square-foot house in the city” of San Francisco.
Gorgeous country estates at the foot of the Sonoma Mountains abound in metro Santa Rosa. High-end buyers value large homes and lots, stunning vistas, and loads of privacy, all within a short drive of downtown.
Wealthy retirees from across the San Francisco Bay Area often relocate to Santa Rosa for an active lifestyle. Sitting in a bucolic region ideal for biking and hiking, Santa Rosa is also a short drive away from the wineries of Sonoma and Napa counties, and from 17 miles of gorgeous coastline.
3. Boulder, CO
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 14.7% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 9% Million-dollar growth: 5.7%
Known for its pristine natural surroundings—Flatiron Mountains, lush forest, and crystal-clear creeks—Boulder is a small mountain town with big price tags. Wealthy buyers who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle plunk down millions for fine residences, including posh country homes, contemporary ranches, and mountain-view retreats. Urbanites settle down in remodeled mansions near downtown, with quick access to craft breweries and farm-to-table restaurants.
But when locals talk about million-dollar homes, these days they’re likely to be referring to regular middle-class abodes. Boulder’s seven-figure real estate market has been on an incredible tear in recent years, as the city struggles with a lack of available housing in the midst of a tech boom. Boulder is home to dozens of start-ups and major outposts of corporate giants like Google and Microsoft, and it’s running out of land to build new homes.
4. Truckee, CA
Truckee, CA
Witold Skrypczak/Getty Images
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 12.4% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 7.1% Million-dollar growth: 5.3%
For generations, the Lake Tahoe region has been a favorite vacation spot for Northern Californians, with world-class skiing in winter and water activities and gorgeous hiking in summer. A lakefront property used to represent the apex of luxury, but increasingly, wealthy buyers are drawn to new communities with top-flight amenities in Truckee, just north of the lake.
Martis Camp, a luxury community that boasts tournament-standard golf courses and a private high-speed lift to the Northstar ski resort, leads in luxe home values with a median list price of $3.5 million. Even the cheapest home there lists for $1.8 million. Similar communities, where homes feature modern design and acre lots, have also seen explosive growth in the million-plus-dollar segment.
5. Fredericksburg, TX
Downtown Fredericksburg, TX, often called “Fritztown” because of its German history
Chris Litherland/Wikipedia CC
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 13.6% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 9.8% Million-dollar growth: 3.9%
Located in central Texas, this is a town of ruggedly beautiful terrain, scattered live oaks, and tall grass prairie. In the region dubbed the Texas Hill Country, the latest wave of settlers are wealthy transplants seeking a picturesque place to retire that’s also within distance of urban amenities. Big city life is just an hour and a half away—Austin to the east and San Antonio to the south.
“You get easy access to urban life, yet you don’t have to live in the San Antonio ’burbs,” says real estate agent Amy Patrick with Keller Williams City View. “Here we have the river, lots of great little places to eat, and local shopping boutiques.”
The moneyed class is typically looking for 100-plus-acre “recreational ranches” where residents can enjoy hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. Aside from the strong cowboy vibe, there are plenty more cosmopolitan cultural offerings, like museums, theaters, art galleries, and numerous festivals all year.
Fun fact: Fredericksburg has the highest share of millionaire households in Texas—they make up nearly 6.5% of its population, according to the wealth research firm Phoenix Marketing International.
6. Heber, UT
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 10.5% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 6.8% Million-dollar growth: 3.7%
Located in a beautiful valley outside Salt Lake City, two peaceful mountain towns—Heber City and Midway—have become the newest regional hot spots for premium real estate. You dig outdoor activities? These are dream locales.
Only 20 minutes south of the better-known resort town of Park City, Heber’s million-dollar home market is expanding every bit as quickly as Park City moves farther out of reach. The same $1 million that buys you a mountain villa in Heber is barely enough for a ski cabin in Park City.
Ritzy communities have sprouted all over the Heber Valley, offering amenities designed to appeal to the elite.
“The Heber and Midway area is where a big chunk of the future growth is,” says real estate consultant David Lawson from Engel & Volkers. “When people come to Park City and look at what their money gets them, these towns get all the more attractive.”
7. Boston, MA
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 9.9% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 6.8% Million-dollar growth: 3.1%
Hey, what the heck is blue-blooded Boston—certainly no stranger to luxury dwellings—doing on this list of newbie million-dollar homes? While it’s true that Louisburg Square and Beacon Hill have no shortage of red-brick townhouses fetching $10 million or more, there’s new growth far from such trophy addresses, or those in wealthy suburbs like Brookline. An epic building boom in recent years has added thousands more luxury housing units, mostly apartments, in every corner of this town.
Ambitious developers have shoehorned glaringly modern, glassy apartments into neighborhoods of historic row houses. In the gloriously expensive South End and West End, condo units with custom cabinetry and 16-inch-deep cast-iron tubs range from $1 million to $2 million. Occasionally, you’ll come across a single-family home, but they usually start at $3 million.
Even perennially working-class neighborhoods like South Boston have seen a budding market for million-dollar homes.
8. Seattle, WA
Downtown Seattle, WA
bluejayphoto/iStock
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 7.7% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 5.3% Million-dollar growth: 2.4%
As Seattle’s population of the “tech wealthy” and “global affluent” is on the rise, seven-figure homes are becoming the norm. Good deals are snapped up fast, virtually citywide.
Even once unimpressive neighborhoods like Ballard and Delridge have also seen dramatic shifts of late. Bungalows have been torn down to make room for new development. Newly constructed luxury condos and renovated century-old homes are proving extremely popular, thanks to their proximity to downtown and high-tech employers.
9. Santa Fe, NM
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 11.7% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 9.4% Million-dollar growth: 2.3%
If down-to-earth Santa Fe doesn’t strike you as a luxe market, check out designer Tom Ford’s $75-million ranch, which went on the market last year. Like Ford, many who own high-end homes in Santa Fe don’t live here full-time. They are vacationers or retirees who are attracted to the city’s renowned galleries, clear skies, and easy access to national forests.
The juniper-covered hills northwest of town are dotted with spacious estates with million-dollar price tags—ensuring privacy and panoramic views. Buyers often spot ranch-style haciendas that come with sprawling acreage for horseback riding, or gated adobes that honor authentic Pueblo-Spanish architecture.
10. Charleston, SC
Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2017: 7% Share of $1 million-plus homes in 2014: 4.9% Million-dollar growth: 2.1%
Beaches, mild weather, and beautiful historic homes—Charleston checks almost every box for a perfect place to buy a second home. And that’s why this old-world city has never fallen out of fashion among business moguls and celebs.
But lately it’s been the new-money class, many of whose members work in the city’s fast-growing tech game, fueling the upper-end real-estate boom. Developers have embarked on a new construction frenzy on the waterfront—many are tearing down old properties and building brand-new luxury ones.
“Charleston is sophisticated, artistic, and has incredible food,” says Thomas Bennett, a Realtor with Carriage Properties. “If you want to buy a nice second home on the coast between New York and Florida, this is it.”
Sullivan’s Island, about 15-minute drive from downtown, is a beloved spot to buy a lavish second (or fifth) home. Beach homes are built with broad piazzas and high ceilings to catch sea breezes. Only four homes on Sullivan’s Island are on sale for less than a million. Act fast!

Eight great sandwiches to make with your wild game and fish
Catch it, cook it, and put it on some bread. (Michael Kilcoyne/Unsplash/)
This story was originally featured on Field & Stream.
If there is one meal that’s more satisfying than a delicious, well-crafted sandwich—it’s a delicious, well-crafted sandwich stuffed with the hard-earned meat of wild game or fish that you’ve brought home from the woods or the water. Over the years, we’ve published many sandwich recipes, but the eight here—featuring venison, moose, upland game, and no shortage of fried fillets—are our favorites. So dig in, and enjoy.
Fried catfish po’boy
A fried catfish po’boy makes for the perfect summer lunch. (Photograph by Christina Holmes / Food and Prop Styling by Roscoe Betsill/)
If you ask me, there’s no recipe more representative of Cajun cooking that the humble po’boy. You’ll find fried catfish po’boys at almost any Louisiana deli, but it’s much more satisfying to make your own with the fresh summer cats you catch. Pair this sandwich with a side of sweet-potato fries and a cold beer. — Jean-Paul Bourgeois
The venison stand-wich
This sandwich almost looks too good to eat. Almost... (Plamen Petkov; Roscoe Betsill (food and prop styling)/)
The “shooter’s sandwich” became something of an Internet meme a few years ago, triggered by a British food writer’s deeming it the best sandwich in the world. Loading a hollowed-out loaf of bread with steak, mushrooms, shallots, and a fat dose of horseradish yields a kind of portable beef Wellington—the pinnacle of British cuisine reinvented as a trail snack. Hunters (i.e., real shooters) saw the potential for a game version—an ideal pack-along for sustenance on a long day afield. — Jonathan Miles
Fried pheasant sandwich
No fast-food sandwich can compare with this wild thing. (Colin Kearns/)
Back when the country lost its mind after Popeye’s launched its fried chicken sandwich, we took it upon ourselves to come up a with recipe for a sandwich that was tastier, healthier, and didn’t require you to get in line at six in the morning. (Also, unlike their sandwich, ours won’t give you heartburn.) The result was our Fried Rooster. — Colin Kearns
Venison sausage breakfast sandwich
Serve this at hunting camp, and you’ll be a kitchen hero. (Colin Kearns/)
Two scrambled eggs, American cheese, and a hefty patty of venison sausage all sandwiched between an English muffin—this is a meal for hunter who wakes up with a serious appetite (or hangover). The secret ingredient with this sandwich is a generous drizzle of honey alongside with some hot sauce. Trust us: The sweet-and-savory combo really hits the spot first thing in the morning. — C.K.

Melt Bar & Grilled, in the Cleveland suburbs of Lakewood and Cleveland Heights, has one specialty: grilled-cheese sandwiches. The menu presence of 26 variations on that humble childhood favorite—there’s even one stuffed with lasagna—is just one indicator of how far and wide owner Matt Fish is willing to take a grilled-cheese. Another: the Lake Erie Monster, in which a Guinness-battered walleye fillet is swamped in a gleeful mess of melted American cheese, jammed between thick slices of toast, and served with jalapeño-spiked tartar sauce. This is fish camp cuisine taken to its belt-loosening outer limits. — J.M.
Wild hog tonkatsu sandwich
Panko breadcrumbs result in a super-crispy, wildly-crunchy sandwich. (Photograph by Christina Holmes / Food and Prop Styling by Roscoe Betsill/)
Growing up, my mom would pack away smothered pork chop sandwiches from leftovers from the night before for my school lunch. As I got older and experimented more with cooking while in high school, I would make my own lunches—but with fried pork cutlets on white bread with yellow mustard and bread-and-butter pickles. When I moved to New York, I discovered tonkatsu sandwiches, which offered a different crunch from panko crumbs that my palate was not use to. I now regularly use the two influences (Cajun roots and Japanese technique) to create a tonkatsu sandwich that is completely unique. —J.P.B.
Turkey Fil-A sandwich
If you ask us, there’s no better way to cook turkey breast than in a deep-fryer.
In my opinion, the Southern fast-food chain’s chicken sandwiches, basic as they may be, owe their popularity to one thing: the pickle-juice marinade. The soak not only adds flavor, but plumps up the chicken—or, in this case, the turkey breast—leaving it moist and juicy, even after frying in hot oil. You can read the full recipe here, in my roundup of seven great wild-turkey recipes, but here’s a quick video to show you how it’s done. — David Draper
Deer testicle po’boy
Don’t knock whitetail balls till you try one. (Michael R. Shea/)
Yes, we know—another po’boy. But this one is too good to leave off of this list. Your buddies might flinch at this recipe—until they try it. Or just let them eat it first, then tell them what they’re eating after they’ve scarfed it down. Rocky Mountain Oysters have a cult following in the West, and for good reason. They’re delicious. So don’t leave these tasty bits in the gut pile. You can’t really mess up this simple recipe, and you’ll have plenty of joke material around deer camp, too. — Michael R. Shea

Top Things To Do In Caboolture Qld
We recently ran into an excellent article online from visitbrisbane.com.au  which highlights some of the best things to do in Caboolture and the surrounding Moreton Bay Region.  We have personally experienced most of these ourselves and can vouch for them 100%.  With our personal favorite being the Woodford Folk Festival.  Get out there and experience and live more of your lives.
34 things to do in the Moreton Bay Region
From the salty sea air by the bayside at Redcliffe to the lush rainforest greens of the D’Aguilar range, Moreton Bay Region is an area rich with diversity. Get an adrenaline rush from the air, experience one of its world-class events, explore the environment and more.
Read on to discover 34 things to do in the Moreton Bay Region.
1. Explore D’Aguilar National Park
On the doorstep of Brisbane city, the massive D’Aguilar Range is split in two – South D’Aguilar takes in Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane right up to Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious behind Samford Valley, and the north Mount Mee section is just up the road from Dayboro with plenty of lookouts and swimming holes.
2. Go whale watching
From June to October each year, depart Redcliffe Jetty with Brisbane Whale Watching and see the magical humpback giants in action. Cruise around the bay for four hours, enjoy lunch and commentary from skipper Kerry and her team of experts.
3. Drive over to Bribie Island and explore the beaches
The only Queensland island connected to the mainland by bridge, Bribie Island is easy to access yet feels like a world away. An escape to the island is ideal for nature lovers, water sport enthusiasts and families alike. Discover 20 things to do on Bribie Island here.
4. Get adrenaline pumping at skying diving or adventure flights
If you’ve ever wanted to feel the wind rush through your hair from such a height – then there’s no time like the present. Head up into the air in a tiger moth with the Aero Dynamic Flight Academy or Antique Airways, jump from a plane with Bribie Skydivers, Jump the Beach Brisbane or Skydive Caboolture, glide through the air with Gliding Adventure Flights or Caboolture Gliding Club, and go up in a chopper with Oceanview Helicopters, S & S Aviation or Airwork Helicopters.
5. Boogie down Bee Gees Way
How Deep Is Your Love for the Bee Gees? Did you know the Gibb brothers grew up in the region? You Should Be Dancing your way down this walkway that honors the world-famous pop group, that was officially opened by Barry Gibb in 2015. There are light shows set to music nightly, for that Night Fever.
6. Go for a scenic drive along the coast or through the forests
Follow the coastline from Redcliffe through Deception Bay and Beachmere through to Bribie Island; or head inland through Samford Valley to Woodford. It’s then easy to make your way back to Brisbane via the highway.
7. Play in Pumicestone Passage
The channel runs 35km between Bribie Island and the Caboolture coastline, acting as a protected marine park and safe haven for wildlife. It’s popular with water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers – take a guided kayak tour, wind or kitesurf, go bird watching, pump for yabbies, hire a barbecue boat, float along on the Bribie Island Gondola or simply watch the magic of a sunset over the Glasshouse Mountains.
8. Fly a kite at Pelican Park in Clontarf
Kiteflyers are a regular sight every first and third Sunday of the month, from 12-4pm, at Pelican Park. Take the kids along to watch them soar through the sky.
9. Take the family to Settlement Cove Lagoon
A resort style pool … at zero cost. Come splash about at Settlement Cove – a paradise beside the sea that’s open to the public year-round just off Redcliffe Parade. Make a day of it and pack a picnic or barbecue too.
10. Taste local drops at Ocean View Estates
Head into the hills and experience locally grown and produced wine and craft beer at Ocean View Estates. Drop by the cellar door for a tasting, linger over lunch or even make a weekend of it by staying at the on-site cottages.
11.  Reconnect at Woodford Folk Festival
This mammoth annual music and cultural festival is one of the biggest of its type in Australia. Running for six days over the new year, Woodford is a magical award-winning event that features more than 2000 performers and 438 events with local, national and international talent fitting the bill.
12.  Wander Scarborough Marina and eat fresh fish at Tempest Seafood
Fresh off the trawler on the Redcliffe Peninsula, head to Morgan’s Seafood for award-winning seafood while sitting among bobbing boats in Scarborough Harbour.
13. Cruise along the Moreton Bay Cycleway
Start the 26km cycleway journey at the Ted Smout Bridge, along the waterfront at Redcliffe, through Scarborough and Rothwell to Deception Bay.
14. Go camping
The question is – coastal or country? Over on Bribie Island the recreation area provides a variety of coastal camping experiences, some accessible by 4WD, others accessible by boat. In D’Aguilar National Park there are a number of campgrounds with facilities, plus remote walk-in only campsites.
15. Check out the bay on two wheels
Don your leather jacket and prepare to feel the wind in your hair on a Harley with Moreton Bay Motorcycle Tours.
16. Challenge your crew to an all-action battle
Want to fight your mates to the death? Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme. How about trying laser skirmish instead – Laser Commando and Mango Hill Skirmish will sort you out, or opt for paintball at the Skirmish Paintball Action Centre or Mango Hill Skirmish.
17. Explore art around the region
Drop into the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery to explore up to four different exhibitions in the public spaces; Dayboro Art Gallery is a community-run space located in the old Plumber’s Shop (circa 1950s); Pine Rivers Art Gallery is a public space that represents local artists in the region with a gallery shop so you can take home a local piece; and Redcliffe Art Gallery focuses on the cultural history of the region.
18. Embrace community fun at Redcliffe Festival
Celebrate the bayside across three massive weekends each August and September with a huge program of free and ticketed events. Keep a keen eye out for the Redcliffe KiteFest, Bee Gees Way Dinner, Scarborough Sounds, JettyFiesta and Redcliffe Remembers events.
19. To market, to market
From farmers’ markets to flea markets and arts and crafts fairs, Moreton Bay Region has a wide range of weekly and monthly markets all around the area. Check out a full list of local markets here.
20.  Ride a horse to the pub
Saddle up to Slickers Horse Riding for the ride of a lifetime. Besides the regular style of trail rides around its Ocean View Road property (it’s called Ocean View for a reason), the family business also runs scenic trail rides to the local Crown Hotel pub in Dayboro, or the nearby winery Ocean View Estates. Giddy up!
21. Experience Australia’s largest medieval event
Every July, the Abbey Medieval Festival springs up a village of street performers, craftsmen, banquets, and entertainment. History comes alive before your eyes with jousting tournaments, knighting ceremonies and dance and combat displays. It’s held on the site of the Abbey Museum, an excellent art and archaeology attraction open year-round that covers 500,000 years of human history.
22. Sink beers and oysters at Sandstone Point Hotel
Overlooking Bribie Island, the renovated Sandstone Point Hotel has lush green lawns that roll down to Pumicestone Passage. Pick up a cheeky dozen at the oyster bar and make yourself comfortable for a solid Sunday session. Keep an eye out for boutique music festivals and other big events at the venue.
23. Walk through historic Dayboro
The cute town of Dayboro is home to plenty of historic buildings. This self-guided town walk will take you past 18 sites including the old butter factory, bootmaker and chemist shop.
24. Dine along the waterfront
Local favourite The Rustic Olive serves great pasta and even better dessert, Ceylon Inn does an awesome goat curry, and Chop Chop Sushi is the place to be for super-sized okonomoyaki with a view. Workshop Co is a small gem that does great coffee with a constantly changing breakfast menu, and Preece’s at the Jetty is an institution that does a solid breakfast trade by the water.
25. Stay on the farm
Take the whole family away to Brockhurst Cabins – even the dog. Swim in the spring-fed dam, have a barbecue, take a trail ride, or feed horses from the comfort of your deck.
26. Discover secret swimming holes to cool off in
Rocky Hole
Our favourite is Rocky Hole, a large swimming hole and waterfall in the Mt Mee section of D’Aguilar National Park. Access is recommended for 4WD vehicles only. Nearby, Stony Creek swimming hole and Neurum Creek are other spots to jump in. Closer to Brisbane, the Bunya Crossing Reserve swimming hole, Edward Allison Park at Eatons Hill and Young’s Crossing in Petrie are good spots to cool down.
27. Tee off around the region
The Pacific Harbour 18-hole championship golf course is one of the best in the Greater Brisbane region. Water is the central theme of this Bribie Island course, with it incorporating the wetlands, watercourses and native vegetation to craft a “risk and reward” style par 72 course. Been there done that? Try Caboolture, North Lakes Resort, Bribie Island, Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Woodford golf clubs.
28. Cruise out and about in Moreton Bay
Explore the aquatic playground that is Moreton Bay with Dolphin Wild Cruises. The boat will take you out from Scarborough Marina to spot dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and whales in the marine park. Add snorkeling to your tour to get up close and personal with the subtropical fish. Further north, Ferryman Cruises offer tours along Pumicestone Passage between Bribie Island and the mainland. These include eco cruises, sunset tours and private charters.
29. Walk across the Ted Smout Bridge
It’s Australia’s longest bridge – stretching 2.7km across Bramble Bay, connecting Sandgate and Brighton with Clontarf and Redcliffe. Walk or ride along the 4.5km pedestrian and cycle path, plus keen fishermen can cast off from the many platforms.
30. Explore the region’s deer farm or walk a llama
Ever wanted to walk a llama? You do now. Dayboro Cottages and Llama Walks offer quiet getaways and llama walks open to the public. Over at Mt Samson, stop into Lyell Deer Sanctuary on weekends to hand feed the deer.
31. Picnic at Lake Samsonvale
Lake Samsonvale (North Pine Dam) was constructed in 1976 and forms part of South East Queensland’s water grid. Take a picnic down to a number of areas, or utilise the on-site public barbecues.
32. Watch and feed pelicans daily at Pelican Park
The volunteers at the Clontarf Visitor Information Centre run a pelican-checking program at 10am every day. It draws a small crowd while they check the wild birds for injuries and feed them fresh fish.
33. Toot toot! All aboard the smallest train around
In Melsa Park on Bribie Island, take the opportunity to ride a miniature steam train on 500m of track. On the third Sunday of every month the train is operating from 10am to 2.30pm for enthusiasts big and small. A ride is just $2.
34. From warplanes to poultry, visit the region’s unique museums
Bribie Island Seaside Museum
Learn about the stories of Bribie and the people who shaped, lived and loved it at the Bribie Island Seaside Museum; discover more about birdwatching, pigeon racing, breeding and bird migration at the Avicultural and Poultry Museum (the only specialist museum of its type in the Southern Hemisphere); and see a fine collection of aircraft and memorabilia at the Caboolture Warplane Museum. Article link:  https://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/information/articles/destinations/things-to-do-moreton-bay-region
There is also the Samford District Historical Museum, Old Petrie Town, Durundur Railway, Caboolture Historical Village and the Woodford Community Museum to explore.
We trust you found this article helpful in making your next visit to Caboolture and the Moreton Bay Region one that you will remember for many years to come.  The Moreton Bay Region offers a plethora of things to do and see for young and old.

Culinary adventure around Iceland
There are many reasons to explain Iceland’s popularity today. The Blue Lagoon, the Fjords, the waterfalls, the glaciers, the horses, the puffins, and the whales come to mind. Then there is Thor and the food. Oh, the food. What is produced in Iceland is some of the purest and most full of flavor and respect. There is a love for tradition in Iceland and what the land has given the people. The traditions that came during the time of the Vikings have remained over time.
On this magical island, in the middle of the Atlantic far up north, there is truly something special that happens to the food. To truly comprehend the role food plays in Iceland, you must understand how the land, sea, people, and traditions come together to influence the culture around food. The residents of Iceland have a deep respect for all of these influences and the abundance of resources it has been bestowed with.
The Land
Iceland is a country made up of rich volcanic soil. Trees do not grow high. In fact the joke is, “If you get lost in a forest in Iceland, stand up”. There are multiple reasons to explain this fact. The growing seasons are short, yet fruitful. There are very rocky cliffs and mountains that are not useable for growing, but provide other resources like rich mosses and greens. They provide sustenance for the Icelandic free-range lamb to feed on once they are set out in spring.
The land is also affected by the light and often, harsh weather. There are 24 hours of light during the growing season, causing many plants to become confused if not native to the land. And while produce is not abundant, root vegetable, berries and nutrient-rich greens are. Animals, plants and people have had to adapt to respect the growing conditions they are provided. Finally, the land is alive with geothermal hot spots, providing for both green house growing and hot pots to cook in. Today, people are still cooking meals and breads in the earth.
The Sea
The sea around Iceland is key to both the sustenance of the people and its commerce. The purity of the sea provides a fertile growing ground for fish, sea kelps, and aquaculture in the form of muscles, and more recently oysters. Farmers are now also using the sea to farm fish on the land, using seawater as well as the nearby geothermal heating.
Iceland has some of the best regulations on fishing and you will not find the greed present in other countries. There is a kindness and respect for what the sea provides. Fishermen understand that without carefully monitoring and regulating fishing, they could destroy both their diets and livelihoods.
The People
The culinary wonders of Iceland would be nothing if not for the people. First, you need to understand their kind nature. The people are welcoming, inclusive and have a true respect for both their history and the land. This translates to a profound respect and proudness of their food. When an Icelandic speaks of a red currant or an arctic char their face lights up. Many farmers and fishermen today still live on the farms and fish with two and three generations of their families.
When people speak of the food of Iceland, it is in terms of what they have, not of what they do not have. They speak about the success of others with pride and have the same reverence for the home chefs as the chefs at leading restaurants. The people are not just kind to others, but to the land and the many benefits and nutrition it provides them.
The Traditions
Over generations in most countries, traditions are pushed aside for what is easier and what is in style. This does not hold true in Iceland. Here, tradition is deeply rooted in everything that encompasses food. The reason is simple; the land, sea and weather drive the way in which food is both produced and consumed. Although maybe there is something to the tradition of the elves… It is no gimmick that today bread is still baked in the land; it is both delicious and possible. Why heat an oven when you can use the land? Electricity is very expensive and solar is tough during the winter months, so using the earth is just smart.
Sheep with their newborns are not set out to the mountains to feed for the summer because it is convenient. It is because this is where the animals can find the food that best suits them. Then, the farmers all gather at the end of the season and work together to bring the animals home. Tradition drives the way food is raised, farmer, caught, prepared and served.
The Innovation
Iceland is not just driven by tradition. In order to both meet the needs of the residents and demands of the exports, there have been some wonderful innovations over the last few years. The two main innovations have been greenhouse farming and aquaculture.
Greenhouses have been around for a while, but are not seeded in deep traditions. Over the years, Icelandic farmers have been determined to provide for themselves and others as best they could. They knew that with the natural geothermal resources, they could grow produce in greenhouses. Today greens, strawberries, vegetables, herbs and more are grown for year-round use.
The second way in which the land, the water, and the geothermal resources are being used is with growing fish. Muscles and oysters are being farmed. In fact, oysters were one of the original farmed products in the world. The fish farms are producing some of the most delicious fish being shipped all over the world. Not only are they using the geothermal resources and the ocean waters, but also gravity in building the farms, so that very little non-natural resources are needed.
The Food
If we look back at traditions and natural resources, it is evident that there are key foods that drive the culinary pedestal for Iceland; cod, char, salmon, lamb, berries and rye. Other foods of import to the diet include birch, seaweed, salt, and herbs. No matter what meal you sit for, you can be assured that bread, butter, skyr, lamb and fish will play a role. Also influenced by the Nordic countries, you will find open-faced sandwiches and flat breads.
Restaurants to Experience
Iceland is full of restaurants that specialize in the native food. In fact, trying to find a restaurant that does not serve local food can be a challenge. It is hard to go wrong when picking a restaurant and equally hard trying to make a decision about which cafe to stop in for a quick bite. They are all so wonderful.
Here are a few restaurants that should be on your where to eat list!
The Fish Company - Located in the old part of downtown Reykjavik, the Fish Company is the local favorite. The menu is covered with local seafood, meat, produce, and more. Start with the Reindeer Carpaccio and then enjoy the “Around Iceland” tasting menu for dinner. The meal features the local cod, gravlax, lamb, honey, and so much more. The meal is also perfect for a Einstok beer pairing. While the food is the highlight at he Fish Company, the restaurant is beautiful. The cozy setting is filled with intriguing artwork, candles, and soft cozy nooks. Grounded in being both “exciting and homey”, this is the perfect Nordic infusion cuisine from the true heart of Iceland.
OX - Inside the hip and busy Sumac Grill and Bar behind a hidden door in the back, is a restaurant that has been years in the making; OX. OX is a kitchen transformed from Chef Thráinn Freyr Vigfússon’s grandfather’s home with the cabinets hanging on the wall and the true spirit of Iceland in the room. At OX, you will sit with 10 other people and enjoy true magic happen in front of you.
The ingredients are fresh from the land and sea and even from deep in the earth. The bread course is Hverabraud, which is a geothermal rye bread, baked in the earth. Course after course, the creations that chef put in front of us had textures and flavors that not just pleased the palate, but also made you think. Through the twelve courses we had reindeer, langoustine, scallop, cod, lamb, skyr ,and so much more. OX is a must each time you visit Iceland!
Lava - When you think the Blue Lagoon, you think tourist destination with a restaurant. You do not think an amazing dining experience. But that is just what you get. The Lava Restaurant is built right into an 800 year old lava cliff overlooking the Blue Lagoon, one of the Wonders of the World. The Lava Restaurant is gourmet, serving only the finest ingredients and dishes of Iceland.
I enjoyed the beer-cooked blue mussels from Reykjanes, and I drank the broth when I was finished. For the second course, I enjoyed the fish of the day, right off the boat from the neighboring town on Grindavík. And dessert, well I had to enjoy the local greenhouse grown strawberries with mint, coconut and almonds. What a perfect meal before spending an afternoon in the Blue Lagoon!
Mimir - A brand new restaurant in the Raddison Blu Saga in Reykjavik, Mimir is centered around one idea and that is preparing the best local ingredients to please their guests. The menu changes with the seasons to keep everything with local producers. The plates are meant to share and can be ordered small or large. I suggest getting small plates and getting a lot of them. Some of the dishes you should not miss include the white cabbage, the langoustine with beetroot apple and speck, and the arctic char. But do not leave without having dessert. You have to order your own order of the waffle with ice cream, salty caramel & bilberry.
Two other restaurants not to miss
Hja holla - You have two options to enjoy Hja holla and I ate at both. The original is in the town of Grindavík, very close to the Blue Lagoon. The other is in the airport when you are leaving Iceland. The food features local, delicious, healthy Icelandic dishes and some great sweets and cakes, too. We suggest doing take-out to have on your plane ride home.
Krauma – Located in a natural geothermal bath and spa, Krauma just happens to be a fabulous restaurant. And Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, is a stunning setting. At Krauma, there are many options, but the fish plate and the goat plate should not be missed.
Top Tips When Visiting
Whether you are experiencing Iceland on a stop over, have a few days, or touring the entire country over a week or more, the best tip is that you need to eat local. Here are the top tips on getting there, where to stay, and what not to miss.
Getting there
Getting to Iceland is pretty easy from most major cities and both WOW and Iceland Air are expanding their service. From most east coast cities, Iceland is a quick 5-6 hour flight with ticket prices not to be missed. If you are using Wow or Iceland Air to continue on, you should plan at least one night for your stop over.
Where to stay
If you are only staying for a stop over or for a few nights, staying in Reykjavik is the best choice. You then have the ability to fly to other parts of Iceland easily and also use the many tours that depart from Reykjavik. Staying in Reykjavik also provides you easy access to many local delicious restaurants right downtown.
The Raddison Blu Saga, located a short walk to downtown, is a great option both for price and the culinary choices right in the hotel. There’s the award-winning Grill and the newly opened Mimir listed above. Breakfast is included and you can taste many of Iceland’s finest and most popular dishes.
Do not miss
Any three of these “not to miss” spots are perfect for a stop over, but if you have time, be sure to visit all of them.
Blue Lagoon - One of Iceland’s best mistakes is one of Iceland’s best spots. The Blue Lagoon is literally a byproduct of the geothermal water plant being built. The rich nutrients and minerals in the water provide your body with both a real treat and many say healing properties.
Golden Circle - If you want to see it all in one day, take the Golden Circle and Frioheimar tour. This will allow you to see so many sites, including the spot where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull Iceland apart, the Geysir that shoots every 4-8 minutes, the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, and the Frioheimar greenhouse.
Reykjavik - What some consider the heart of Iceland, this major city is where you can find all of what you need to explore. The international airport is also located in Reykjavik, making it a perfect starting point for your culinary adventure.
There is no better word than respect to describe the food of Iceland. There is the utmost respect for all aspects of food and food production in this country, which explains why the culinary experience of Iceland is truly wonderful. Just be sure to buy some ingredients to take home and know you can always find some Icelandic Provisions Skyr at your local market.
