Hello, I came across the 'fighting in Ice Hockey' Wikipedia page and was very intrigued! Now several youtube compilations (Best nhl fights, then funny moments, then best goals etc) and several Hockey AUs for pairing I'm already a fan of later, I'm ready to continue my hockey journey (descent?) - do you have any blogs you can recommend? Also do you have a place to start re teams and or like essential viewing or reading? Normally I can just watch a show or read a book, but this feels a bit different and I don't know where to start 😅

Also I see the is quite a bit of RPF on Ao3- totally chill with that good writing is good writing after all, but is there any like background on why certain pairings are popular?

oh goodness, hi! and welcome to the madness that is hockey fandom/hockey rpf! i'm probably/definitely not the best person to answer this as i'm pretty new to hockey fandom and only closely follow three teams, but i'll do my best <3

okay *most* hockey blogs are focused on one or a couple of teams. so it's a little tricky to point you in a direction if you aren't already attached to anyone. you can find a lot of good hockey primers on tumblr if you search for a team or a ship + primer.

if you have a local or localish team, maybe start there? descend into tumblr tag hell. many of us start out going oh haha i'm just going to read fic, and maybe reblog some gifs, and then end up attached to teams that are far away and spend obscene money to see those teams when they travel close to us. (my favorite team is in a different conference, so they only come to my city once a year).

there are definitely teams that have more fandom activity and those that have less. all based on the narratives, baby. my local team isn't very fandom active on here, so while i generally root for them and follow them and go to games, i'm not fandom feral about them.

MY team is the pittsburgh penguins. i do not, nor have i ever, lived in pittsburgh. but the pens have the longest serving trio in professional sports, and i am completely and utterly in love with them (but not as in love with them as they are with each other). our captain, sidney crosby (fat of ass and genuinely one of the best hockey players EVER) and his two alternate captains, evgeni (geno) malkin and kris letang, are all obsessed with each other. sidgeno is definitely one of the most popular pairings in hockey rpf. i read and write a lot of them. you can browse #fave 8771 and #sidgeno on my blog to get a glimpse of why.

(note that hockey ship names are unpredictable. sometimes numbers mushed together, sometimes names mushed together, sometimes something else, sometimes there's not really a ship name).

some other big ships are travis konecny/nolan patrick of the philadelphia flyers (love these two... they don't play together anymore... theres a lot of backstory there. theres lots in #tknp on my page), auston matthews/mitch marner of the toronto maple leafs (not my jam i'm no help), alexander ovechkin/nicklas backstrom from the capitals, leon draisaitl/matthew tkachuk (more of an enemies to lovers type scenario), and jamie drysdale/trevor zegras of the anaheim ducks. these ships are popular bc they are insane about each other in some way. oof there's so many more though? these are all popular on ao3 so there's lots of fic out there; perhaps a good starting place.

hii sweetest! yes, of course I can give you some pointers. first of all, welcome to tumblr authorhood!! may you receive many comments and find infinite motivation~

for me, I suppose I’m “self-taught”? but isn’t everyone on this app? lol. actually, I’ve been sharing fic on tumblr for… idk, 8 years on and off ?? omg that’s wild. but yeah, I’ve definitely learned some stuff along the way., here are my key takeaways:

(general) promote interaction:

there’s a couple things I do to try to improve the number of notes I receive on my posts, but there’s also a few things I try my best to do in order to improve my readers’ experience. first, I use tags on every post I publish. I have a tag for asks, for my fics, for my fic recs, etc. This makes it easier for a potential follower to go through with following you even if they don’t like 100% of your content, bc they can always blacklist the tag and they won’t have to see any of those posts. second, use links so that your readers can easily look through your stuff. a masterlist is KEY here as it’s the gateway for all your fics, but also, general navigation, or even linking your masterlist at the end of your fics can be beneficial too. I find it’s also really important to have links in your bio. this makes it way more approachable for any followers and it’s honestly nice to have for your own purposes as well. the only thing about that is, you have to make the links for your bio on the computer version of tumblr when you’re editing your blog. it cannot be mobile, something about it just won’t work. i can go into further detail on how to get those bio links but tbh i just looked it up on google 5yrs ago and it’s stayed the same since then lol~

theme:

obviously my blog doesnt have a “theme” theme when you visit it on computer, but i mean theme as in, all your navigation/general/fic posts are cohesive and they look like they belong on the same blog. you can achieve this by using the same fonts, text symbols (or emojis…. i guess. personally, side eye…), or dividers.

fonts:

so beyond the 3 fonts tumblr has in its posting formatting, i personally like to use copy paste fonts. they still work with embedding links and stuff as well. i like to use a font generator, where you type in whatever you’d like and it converts it for you. then you can just copy & paste.

text symbols:

these are a good for borders and dividers, or just generally spicing up your bio/navigation. i usually google “text symbols copy paste”, and browse through the results.

dividers:

when you’d like to use a photo divider on your blog, make sure it is a very skinny PNG file. PNG means it has a transparent background, so it will be more cohesive for your readers on regular white posts and also dark mode posts. I actually designed my own PNG divider (Azriel’s siphon of course hehe) on my iPad on ProCreate, but I know there’s a lot of blogs that make them and share them, which you can use so long as you give proper credits. that’s another thing that’s important— always make sure to credit others if you’re using work that isn’t yours!

most importantly, I recommend always TESTING these methods!! make sure to double check that all your links work, that the symbol you choose doesn’t become an emoji when you paste, that the font is all set. there’s a lot of trial and error involved in making your blog just right :) hope this helps & good luck anon!!

Oh thank you so much for saying that!! I love exploring emotions, especially messy ones like jealousy, you know, the ones that are natural but that you don't really know what to do with and might even be ashamed of — they're the ones that I find the most fun to dive in. I'm definitely considering writing more for some of these couples it's an issue actually, I have so much that I want to write ;-; and I can tag you in it if you'd like to as well!

Also I wanted to tell you how much your comments on the parts of the series have meant, I've been meaning to shoot you a message to reply to them because I find the "comment" function on Tumblr not very practical to reply to people. So since you're in my inbox, I hope it's okay with you if I reply to them here! This series has gotten a fair number of notes but not that many actual interactions (I mean like, people telling me what they think about stuff), and it means so much to me that you took the time to leave in depth comments ❤️

So I do not have a degree in psychology, but writing complex characters is definitely my favorite thing to do and probably what I'd consider to be my strength, quite flattered that you thought that though 😁 I did really enjoy writing their communication in this and I'm definitely considering writing more for these two!

Okay, so, here there is something that's an issue because I'm not always sure how to tag it lol. Basically, I often hesitate to use the tag "unreliable narrator" because people associate it with a certain type of narrators (often liars/narrators who hallucinate or stuff like that). All it would mean here is that this is written from the OC's point of view and she... doesn't always realize what's going on.

So, here, Jisung's aware of the fact that there are issues with the ex, but both OC and the ex have been very careful not to talk to him about it/to hide it in front of him so he doesn't know exactly what's going on. When there's the scene with his ex, his closeness with the OC is intended to provide comfort to her but also to himself (the break-up was messier than OC knows), so he's not trying to make the ex jealous! And actually, the reason why he takes the bottle is because he doesn't want OC to kiss someone else lol.

As for why it looks like he can't get his shit together, the issue is that, well, OC mentions that she's trying hard not to look desperate/too into him and she's not taking into account the fact that she's doing a little too good of a job. So Jisung's just not sure of whether or not she has feelings for him (it's clear that she's attracted to him but anything else? yeah that's anyone's guess, literally bc some of Jisung's friends think he's heading towards heartbreak with her at this point)

And yes, they would start dating not too long after this scene! That's actually what I'd written at first but it didn't have enough of a "jealousy" feel and had to be mostly rewritten ;-;

Yeahhh, things are messy in that one, but I can say that Felix has his reasons, or at least his justifications. And yes, they've kissed before, which was when the OC basically said that she couldn't do more because she knew it would end up in heartbreak for her. I can't get into the past too much in case I end up writing it, but I can say that if I wrote it, this would probably be either the summary or the intro:

"The first time you see Lee Felix, he's sitting next to Bang Chan — yes, the Bang Chan, captain of the swimming team who's taken the school to the nationals twice now —, dyed blonde hair looking like a halo, nose scrunched up as he laughs with that surprisingly deep laugh of his. You don't think he even registers your existence then; you're just dropping by to say hi to Jisung anyway, you're not taking it personally.

The last time you see Lee Felix, two people are having to physically drag him from Bang Chan, who's sitting on the floor, nose bleeding, and there are tears of angers in his eyes. He's expelled a few days later, drops off the face of the Earth, and everyone carefully avoids the subject, especially around Chan.

And then, well, you see him again, but years have passed, and he's not really the Felix you used to know anymore.”

The Han and Seungmin roommate thing was 100% an intentional reference to that lol, I was hoping people would clock it 😁 Yeah this was very sweet to write, the MC is different from other ones I write usually so it was a fun exercice too!

hey, im a new writer. can u give out some tips for writers who just started writing fics

hi! yes ofc!

when i first started writing, i kinda had one goal —> write the type of fics that i would want to read. i think that’s really important when you start writing. it keeps you going and it keeps your motivation up for writing. i think that’s the main thing when it comes to all writers.

as for actual writing tips. i would say stick to third or second person. first person kind of loses its touch now a days, especially on tumblr. it might be an aesthetic thing, but for me personally, i connect better with fics in those povs.

also try to avoid using the same words repeatedly. i read my fics out loud to myself to see how certain lines sound, and if something doesn’t sound right, i change it. there’s always an alternative way to say something if you ever find that you don’t like what you’ve written.

i would say maybe start small, with a blurb or two and get a feel for it. my very first fic on here was a silly little blurb about peter parker and y/n picking a baby name.

and also, never take yourself too seriously. at the end of the day, while i do sometimes get frustrated with the amount of notes i get, i have to remember that i’m writing for myself. nobody goes back to my masterlist and rereads things as much as i do. bc like i said, i write the type of fics that i wanna read. maybe it’s a little selfish, but my writing is tailored for me and it always will be. never ever will i write a fic that i don’t like and is purely for someone else’s enjoyment. i want ppl to read my work and enjoy it ofc, but in the end, it’s all for me.

sorry for taking almost an entire day to respond ;-; but wowoow i’m incredibly honored that you’ve come to me for advice as well as being part of your inspiration to start writing :))

okay, so i went through my previous asks about writing and tagged them as #writing advice. but here are the most important tips that i would say:

plan out your fic– to make the process easier, i would suggest creating an outline! outlining is a great way to visualize the story you’re telling and plan out any research you might need to do. it doesn’t have to be super detailed or anything. you can just put down what exactly you want to happen from start to finish, note any dialogue you might want to add, or describe the scenes you want to include. 

no matter how many times the idea has been done before, write that fic! when i first started, i remember not wanting to write a fic solely bc there’s already one out there with a similar plot. but don’t let this discourage you! everyone’s writing is one of a kind, which makes each fic special. for example, the best friends to lovers trope is something that’s been done a million times, but your take on it will be unique as it’s your words and your dialogue. 

quality over quantity always– don’t worry too much about how short (or long) your fic is! focus more on how you deliver the story rather than aiming for a specific word count. some writers can produce amazing fics in just under a thousand words. it’s all about the quality of your work, not the length of it. for any first-time writers, i would suggest writing something small to test it out, have a feel for what it’s like and use this to discover your writing style.

proofread your work– this one is obvious, but it’s essential! i know that feeling at the end after typing out the last line of the story. you’re happy that you’ve finally completed it and are excited to post. but don’t forget to read it over once or twice before uploading to make sure your spelling is correct and your grammar is the best that it could be. yes, no one’s perfect. you may not catch every mistake, but you can try fixing most! you can also run it through sites like grammarly to find those errors.

have fun with it– i can’t stress this enough, writing should be fun. remember that you’re allowed to step away and take a break. you can always come back to it once you’re ready! it might seem scary to post in the beginning, but it’s such a rewarding experience when you do. writing takes a lot of time, effort and love, and sharing it with thousands of readers on this platform is an outstanding achievement in itself. so far, this whole community has been lovely and very supportive! i can assure you that they’ll be thrilled for more stories!

ok i am not over everything everywhere all at once but tbh one thing i haven’t heard anyone talk about yet is how even in the multiverses that mostly existed as part of a joke there still managed to be a genuinely touching narrative arc in each one??? like i know the reason i feel so emotionally invested in two piñatas or two rocks is because of the greater context of the story being played across all these abstract scenarios and the same emotional signifiers taking place across each one to emphasize the relationship between evelyn and her family but i just have to appreciate the fact that there wasn’t a single moment in that movie that didn’t end up having a larger impact. the whole is greater than the sum of its parts yes, but also the parts themselves still manage to be worth something in and of themselves. god what a great movie

concept i just thought of: i wanna get a jacket and just absolutely cover it in pronoun pins. all different sets of pronouns, he/him they/them she/her she/they he/they they/she ze/zir xe/hir etc etc etc literally any pronouns i can find. and all different types too like the mass produced ones and some homemade ones from bottle caps. so i want a pronoun jacket like that and then i'll wear it around and whenever a young queer kid is like "hey i like your jacket" i'll give them one of my many pronoun buttons for free bc i have more at home. i'll become the pronoun fairy. very excited to see this vision come to life

Booping April Fools Recap!

I had a blast y'all's, it was so much fun!

Booped and was booped over 4k times apparently :D

I love those kind of Tumblr events, whether planned like this April fools or just a sudden ever given or nov5 or Goncharov xD the vibes are always immaculate and the community is lovely <3

While on post limit I had a Lot of time on my hands going on tumblr web just booping instead of reblogging, and I figured out the super boop and even how to super boop myself on web

Though tumblr then complains about booping laundering xD

I tried to see whether there's another gimmick boop thing like the super boop but didn't work anything out - then this morning, I see this!

so, as mentioned, as a result of a persistent tumblr error, I've been trying out a private dreamwidth journal for a personal project and... I like it so much more?

my focus isn't constantly assailed by dashboard/blog notifications; the chances of being shown casual antisemitism are nil. I found a mobile-friendly layout in one of the resource communities (tbf the standard layouts may work on mobile, but I didn't like any of them enough). I can still post images and even gif sets. I can post and organise my vast number of research texts. I can cross-reference to my heart's delight. it saves draft posts. you can put multiple cut tags in the same entry. the tags are much better organised and easy to rename. they're all in the sidebar! and there is a tags page! you can pin two posts (more with paid accounts). I can set the default access level (public/friends/private) for the whole journal. there are good comment controls. there is image storage (public/friends/private). there’s also the benefit of the memories feature (public/friends/private) for saving posts. logging in doesn't take me to a feed of updates from my contacts; I have to go to the /reading page to seek them out, which is far better for my concentration. you can send direct messages to other users. there are no ads or algorithms. the faq section is pretty comprehensive and easy to navigate. perhaps most importantly, it doesn't break my fucking posts. I love it, I feel saner already, and I may upgrade to a paid account to help keep them afloat.

the only thing I miss about tumblr is the archive page and being able to filter that by post type/tag. and having sideblogs is a lot easier than having to switch accounts (ig this is why LJers used to create communities for their fic/graphics and limit them to mod-only posting; you can create as many communities as you like). for whatever reason, the rich text editor on DW is not working for me and I intermittently hit 403 error pages (it works after I hit refresh; irritating, and I hope they fix it, but not a dealbreaker). I don't mind using the html editor; I'm used to them, and frankly they tend to be more reliable. there is no mobile app for DW but that too may be advantageous (fewer distractions). so I can't post on mobile as easily, but I can still access the curated information while on the go if necessary. some things take a little longer to post but that is fine.

I have liked sideblogs as a way to organise research projects, but it is always an uphill battle. pages don't work on the app anymore, trying to access tumblr via mobile web is for stronger people than I, and so I have to pin long posts full of internal links in order to navigate everything I've curated. and now those are more or less un-editable.

I originally ended up on tumblr bc LJ was going dead and tumblr was where everyone was migrating, but there's a very real possibility that the LJ/DW interface is the one I'm conditioned to. apart from being organised and efficient and non-distracting, it's also a more satisfying, slower paced way of interacting with people: it's geared towards writing more than images and so functions more as a journalling/penpal kind of thing; the only way to interact is to write comments or DMs. (I have a friend who is now part of an international friend/meetup group with her old LJ mutuals. the bonds of pseudonymous penpalship are strong.)

I'm resistant to nostalgia but using DW does remind me of when the internet felt more DIY and interesting (good blogs, forums, etc) and less intrusive. ultimately: if it feels more enjoyable, I'll go with it; no need to overthink it.

I set up a (different) DW account a few years back but never quite figured out what to write about so it's been sitting as a backup fic archive. however, I may start using it as more of a journal/commonplace book. (do I use the existing account for this or do I set up a whole new account. to be decided.)

some tips for writing blogs, especially those who are just starting out. these are some things that works for me and may or may not work for others.

how to add a read more link on mobile

type :readmore: on a free space, then hit the enter or return button

personally i think they’re very helpful because it lessens the space you take up in your dash, and might encourage more people to rb

+ you can also add this on a spot where it gives a sort of cliffhanger, essentially making people want to ‘read more’

headers, banners, and dividers

though not necessary, it’s good to have a title for your work. make sure it’s bold and doesn’t blend in with your notes (aka pairing, warnings, etc.). this also helps when someone wants to look up one of your works in your search bar

i don’t really make banners or covers for my works. but some good apps that i know of would be picsart and canva. if you’re looking for ideas, i definitely recommend going into canva

wondering how to make those really small, thin dividers? you can make them using picsart! to make a divider hit tools > free crop > brush > size (adjust it to your preference > then draw a line along the edge of your photo > save

using the divider you just saved, go back to picsart and edit it again > draw option > hit rainbow square at the bottom left corner > hit suction/droplet symbol right below the check mark > color in the white spots bc for some reason picsart glitches and makes dividers look white-ish

new blog? just opened an account?

this is gonna sound really frustrating. but... tumblr needs to check if you’re a bot or not. what does this mean? it’s likely that your first few posts won’t show up on the search bar. you may not even get to edit your header/pfp yet ://

this happened to me and there was no visibility on my account at ALL. what helped me get ‘verified’ is that i followed a LOT of accounts, liked a bunch of posts, made some posts here and there. now that lets tumblr know you’re not a bot

the tumblr tagging system usually only allows the first 5 tags in your post to show up. so, what can do you about this? only use FIVE or less tags in your post. wait about 15 minutes or more until you can add some more tags in your post, and they usually all show up like that

another important thing about using tags is not to generalize! especially if you’re using a popular tag. but also don’t specify it too much where barely anyone looks it up. for example, if you’re writing a gn piece about oikawa, i recommend you use the tags such as: oikawa x reader, haikyuu x reader, oikawa x gn!reader, haikyuu headcanons, etc

a good rule of thumb is to use character x reader tags first, then leave the full name or fandom tag last

FOR NSFW: tumblr doesn’t let any tags with nsfw show up. so, give your nsfw works another tag. maybe #namegetspicy idk, you figure it out

FOR WARNINGS: especially if you’re a dark content creator, i highly encourage you to add tw:xyz tags. if you already have a warning note at the top then that’s great. but even better for readers who prefer to actually block these tags that way they never get to see it

another important thing to note is that people have different timezones. it helps if you rb your work at a different time of the day, in case people missed it! (icymi) i’ve noticed that reblogging helps to make your post show up in the tags

interaction + feedback

first and foremost, you are not obligated to write for your followers, and neither are your followers obligated to interact with you. remember that everyone has their own individual lives, and they have their own things to do— so do you, too.

make friends! become mutuals with other writers, visit their ask box. i know it can be daunting having to initiate these things, but you might just turn out to have fun! you can’t expect people to interact with you if you’re not interacting (back). it’s... kind of a two way thing yk? no need to be afraid to interact with other writers. oh, and rb other writers works!

pspsps join tag games or do ask games. it’s fun and very interactive

it never hurts to ask for feedback. i usually do this in a more subtle way because i don’t really expect a full on analysis on my works. maybe a little, is this okay? or feedback appreciated. sometimes it takes a little bit of coaxing for the silent readers

formatting your posts and blog

i generally put in the title at the top in big, bold letters

then comes the header/divider. helps to make the post more... visually appealing ig?

it’s important to add warnings (if any) and the pairing. the audience is not all female, and it might be a little frustrating for male readers having to find out its an x fem reader piece like halfway through your fic

if you have multiple works posted, it’s really really helpful to have a navigation page!

you can organize the posts you make with tags! for example, if you’re shitposting, you can use a specific tag for that. if you have a nsfw related post (ESPECIALLY when your blog is open to the general audience) please make a tag for it

themes + colors

if you have a color in mind but don’t know which direction to go from there, i recommend looking up color + aesthetic

looking to use the same color? download a name color app that’ll give you a hex code for any color you want to use. then, you can type in that hex code for when you’re choosing a color for your tumblr bio

wondering how to make your header image small like mine? just choose a photo for your header and turn off the stretch image option

want to use a different text color that tumblr doesn’t offer? it’s not as complicated as you think. you’ll have to go on a desktop to do this and do some html (but trust me, it’s not very difficult). look up “HTML noob but trying my best - how to use colored text on desktop”

^^ i don’t have the link for the color text tutorial so you can try looking it up

how to make an aesthetic navi and masterlist

step 1: decide a theme! if you’re stuck, think about a character + color/season/mood or look up “[insert] aesthetic” to find some inspiration. or you can try looking at other blogs too

step 2: find a color scheme! it’s easier if you choose fewer colors. if you want to use the same color for both divider and text, download a color name app in order to get the hex code of that color.

step 3: add categories to your navi! most navigation pages include a link to masterlist, about/byi, and rules. your navi should have a title that indicates that it’s... a navigation page. you can add thin colored dividers with the same color to make it easier for followers to navigate

step 4: you can choose to create a ‘cover’ or a picture for your navigation and masterlist! again, i recommend you use the canva app as a starting point

extra: search up emoticon symbols to spice up your titles!

you’re not obligated to do any of these things. i’ve noticed that we tend to build pressure on ourselves when it comes to content and interaction. remember, this !! is !! for !! fun !! when you realize that it’s no longer fun, then know that it’s time to take a break. and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of self care.

INTRO TO ARTHURIANA MASTERPOST

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH ARTHURIANA

The Arthuriana fandom is very broad and there's no one piece of media, which can be confusing for people just getting into it! There’s no right way to engage with arthuriana, and no minimum level of knowledge or reading you need to attain to qualify. 

The basis of the Arthurian Legend is a body of hundreds of texts written across the medieval and early Renaissance period in dozens of languages and cultural traditions. Which can seem pretty overwhelming, but there are a lot of modern vernacular translations-- you absolutely don’t have to learn old French or anything. I’ll go more in depth on where to get started with texts further down.

You also don’t have to read texts at all. As I said, there is no minimum basis-- if you prefer to engage with modern adaptations, or want to engage with medieval arthuriana outside of reading texts, that's also cool! 

In terms of modern adaptations there is a wealth of choices, which I am very much not an expert in lol, so I’m afraid I can’t give much in the way of reccs. Books I have heard good things about are, Exiled from Camelot, Idylls of the Queen, The Buried Giant, the Squire's Tale series, and Gawain by Gwen Rowley (warning that this one is apparently erotica? Good for him). I trust @princesslibs  for modern book reccomendations. and if you speak French Kaamelott is purportedly a very good tv show. Frankly no modern adaptation will ever be better than Spamalot to me, but that's just my personal take. 

If you are curious about engaging with texts but (understandably) don’t want to read a ton of dense medieval literature, one really cool resource is Norris J Lacy's New Arthurian Encyclopedia, which you can pick up at most used bookstores for under ten bucks. It’s a very thorough easy to look through reference of characters stories and texts. I know a lot of people like the Nightbringer wiki, though I personally am wary of it because it basically never cites sources. It’s a good quick reference though and a lot of people like it, I’d just take it with a grain of salt. Sparknotes also has a lot of summaries of the major texts like Le Morte D’Arthur and the romances of Chrétien De Troyes. You are not a fake fan for doing this I promise. And of course you’re always welcome to send me an ask <3 

Finally, getting started with texts. Quick glossary of terms:

--Verse Romance

    A verse (poem) story which can vary a great deal in length. These deal with the adventures of individual knights, usually Gawain, and tend to have a great deal of magical elements and the stereotypical monster slaying, questing, damosel rescuing knight adventures.

--Prose Novel or Romance

    A non poetic narrative, more like a modern novel, more likely to deal with the fall of Arthur, sword in the stone, Mordred, fall of Camelot sort of affair. They are usually quite long. Most famous of these are Le Morte D’Arthur and the French Vulgate, but there are a slew of late medieval Prose novels floating around. Eluding Rey.

--Pseudohistory

    I’m gonna b real these are boring I think. These are, as the name suggests, written as accurate depictions of history.  They very much are not, but they claim to be. Most famous of these is Jeffrey of Monmouth, Mr Jeff Mouth himself, and his History of the Kings of Britain, which I haven’t read because it bores me. You can if you want. It’s in Latin. Whatever. These tend to be some of the earliest texts, and include the “lives of saints” stories. Life of Gildas is the only funny one.

--Ballads

    These are only arguably texts, as most of them were written after the time of the “canon” being composed. But I like them. These are songs telling stories, recorded by people like Francis Child and Thomas Percy. They are very short and fun and include stories like The Boy and the Mantle, Kempion, and King Arthur and the King of Cornwall.

--Lai

    A specific type of French verse poem, usually quite short. The most famous collection of lais are those of Marie le France, including things like Bisclavret and Lanval. 

--Traditions

    Since Arthuriana was written all over, there are different literary traditions across time and space. The French tradition is one of the most famous, including works like the vulgate, Chretien and a lot of verse romances. The English tradition is one of the most influential on modern adaptations, including the Morte D’Arthur and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. There are also Welsh, German, Dutch, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Greek, Belarussian, Scottish, Irish, Breton, and probably even more. There’s a lot. It’s very cool and sexy.

A note that there is also a big tradition of Victorian revival Arthuriana. I wrote a starter guide to that here, it’s all very fun and like, aesthetic. 

Alright, now, which texts do you start with?

If you’re a little intimidated by long texts or medieval lit, starting with short verse romances in modern translation is a great place to start. These include Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is very good and gay and well known, Lancelot and the Hart With The White Foot, which is very good and gay and underappreciated, or Lanval, which is homophobic but funny. 

If you want to start with what is considered the oldest King Arthur Story, Culwch and Olwen is short and fun!

If you want to read about the grail quest, you can start where it started with Story of the Grail or Percival, then the four continuations, Essenbachs Parzival, the vulgate version of the Grail quest which you can buy paperback for like 5 bucks (I can also scan my copy for you just shoot me an ask <3)

If you want to read about the fall of camelot, I have the Vulgate death of Arthur section scanned here. There’s also the Alliterative and Stanzaic mortes, which are in middle English. I have scanned Simon Armitage's Alliterative Morte translation here. I’m working on my own translation of the Stanzaic but it’s not done lol. If you want the first third or so DM me lol. King Artus is very short and readable and it’s a Jewish text which is really cool.

If you want to read about Lancelot, Chrétien de Troyes Lancelot is his first text. He also has a whole long vulgate section, the first part is scanned here by val <3, and there's Lanzelet,  Sebile is in it so it’s probably very good. He’s also basically the main character of Le Morte D’Arthur which I might as well talk about here uhm. It’s long and fun in places and boring in others but it does have like the version most modern adaptations take from and tells the whole story of Arthur and Camelot from beginning to end. The Keith Baines version scanned by val is the most readable but it is an abridgement I believe. people who like le morte usually read this version so its probably the best choice lol

If you want to read about Gawain, good news! He’s in basically everything. Even texts that aren’t supposed to be about Gawain are doomed to become The Gawain Show Featuring The Protagonist Of This Text As A Sidekick. Which is so funny of him. The Roman Van Walewein is very funny and long and Gawain™. I also recommend, L’atre Perilous, Diu Krone, Sir Gawain and the Turk, and I could go on but for brevity's sake let's start there.

On Ao3, we’re trying to get our own Arthurian Literature tag but <3 its a whole thing. Anyway the tag is Arthurian Mythology, but I’ll b real, it’s kind of flooded with stuff that doesn’t really belong there, because even though it’s a fandom tag other people unknowingly tag stuff as Arthurian Mythology when it’s like, a knight au. Okay ngl I have been looking for diamond no ace and knb blogs on this site forever with what feels like very little success and u popped up on my recommended today bc I follow a tag u used and I’m super happy about it u have no idea.

I love music and reading (bit of a nerd) and I like sports (I play catcher and third for softball/baseball and I’m currently work as an umpire for my uni. I’m not really v good at basketball but I like watching). Not really a morning person but I absolutely adore coffee and tea (v random and not important but I have a huge grudge against hot drinks so everything I drink is cold or room temp). I really like watching movies and I crochet. I hate cleaning and I don’t really vibe with people that don’t like music in some way. I also don’t really like grand or sappy traditional romance. I prefer low key (ig more domestic in terms of comfortability) relationships and stuff. And my primary love language is quality time.

That being said my type is himbo (it’s so bad Ik). I am not a very verbally or physically affectionate person, so I like partners that initiate that kind of contact once they understand my boundaries. And I like independence and being the one In charge. I’m also not really a big fan of marriage or kids (I would adopt instead of having them), but I’m a v loyal person and I would look for that in a partner. And snark. Bc banter is a must. It’s entertaining and my fam literally show affection by verbally harassing one another lol. (Also I’m non-binary and bi so a partner that’s respectful would be fantastic). this is a very balanced relationship; it will not be easy because of the contrast at first, but once you both get through it, there’s nothing better than seeing you both learn and grow from each other

we all know isashiki isn’t the most studious person and only has his eyes on three things: baseball, manga, and you. while he might seem a bit dominant, you can easily wear the pants as he has a baby side to him— always wants to be coddled, cared for, etc. isashiki will respect whatever you like, so if you don’t like pda, then there’s no pda. he will enjoy your love just as much as it’s lowkey, and honestly he prefers it that way to avoid being flustered and nervous. in private you both can be your true selves. on that note, you guys bicker about the littlest things because of your mindsets of being “i have to be right.” but in the end he gives in hehe (unless you are completely wrong, competent illogical). he’ll make mini playlists for you because he knows you love music so much, and he is so careful with you because he wants you to take your time to be affectionate. he’ll tease you here and there about it, but when it comes to affection he will always be initiating it. he spends so much time with you when he can, whether it’s stopping by your house with some snacks or having lunch together. on his free days, you guys play a two-man baseball and argue over who’s better, heh. he makes sure that he’s using the right pronouns and referrals so that he doesn’t make you uncomfortable, and will stand up for you when people make the same mistake. he will always understand you. hates it when you pick him up though because he’s embarrassed; imagine the blush on his cheeks!

this relationships opts for a lot of growth like i said because of the contrast of personalities, but it will be a healthy one if it’s grows right :)

I try! I feel like a goof writing replies, but I am super grateful for them and I do attempt to respond, albeit erratically. I don’t usually reply to comments that are just a few words or emojis, not because I don’t appreciate them, but because I feel a little obnoxious writing a thank you that’s longer than the comment??? idk I’m probably overthinking it

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

SO when I first started writing fanfic, I thought I was going to write all unresolved pining historical fics all the time, and accordingly, my first chaptered fic, A House in the Country, is a melancholy 1920-set slice of life in which Aziraphale and Crowley take a trip to the Lake District and pine for each other. I don’t think it’s super angsty but it ends on a somber note

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I was going to say no, but then I remembered one of my absolute favorite things I’ve written is technically a Good Omens/Macbeth crossover

I’d also say I can write sexual stuff that is not repetitive and dialogue that sounds in character. Oh, and I genuinely enjoy writing titles and summaries!

On a structural level, I have a tendency to take too long getting to first plot beats and then rush endings. On a sentence level I think I have a terminal case of Dependent Clause Disease that genuinely interferes with clarity

17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

No real thoughts other than whenever I am reading an old book and someone says something in gratuitous French or one of the 12 expressions I know in Latin I feel very Smart bc the fifth grade snob lives within me

It’s been so interesting seeing responses to this question from people who have been writing fic since their early teens or childhood! I didn’t write any fanfic before 2019 or any fiction at all except for school projects. I wrote maybe 1k words of Thor fanfic that summer and then went straight on to Good Omens

In Mixed Company, for sure. I’m hopeful that when I finish current WIPs it’ll be Lest They Be Flatmates though!

@jungcity — nyx!! one of my all-time favorite fic writers that i still follow even after being inactive <3 her two series love, eternal and bane of the devil are so intricately plotted out that i forget that i’m not reading an award-winning novel at times 🤧 once in a while i think about her characters asking myself how they’re doing sometimes bc i’ve developed an attachment to them somehow LOL that’s how you know her stories are top-tier 💕

@hannie-dul-set — allex!! oh goodness where should i start with her AHAHA her storytelling is so?? comforting?? like idk man i love the way she weaves through her words and formulates them into her stories that reading them carries me into a journey to an everlasting fairytale that i never want to end. i highly recommend a fool’s game and her social media au gold painted canvas if you’re looking for a good time ☺️☺️

@smileysuh — nova!! yo she’s a killer writer who busted her ass left and right posting fics almost every week that i was worried if she was getting enough sleep or not LOL. i’ve read two of her fics so far: heat and valentinejae97 and they are just— muah. a delectable dessert molded and carved to perfection, topped with sweet fruits and tart syrups that complements all the iridescent things in love 💕 in the rare event that i want to go back and reread fics, she’s one of the authors that come to mind 😌😌

@nctream — desirée!! her two fics, healing and 1-800-poet, are to LIVE FOR omg both of them always leave me feeling super fuzzy and warm that reading them feels like a hot chocolate on a wintery evening by the fireplace with holiday lights brightening the living room as the snowflakes outside your apartment drifts down from heaven. sounds endearing, doesn’t it? well her fics are just as wonderful, if not ethereal 🤧

@domjaehyun — jewel!! ngl i’m kind of scared to type this out but! this has to be said bc she needs to hear this: i don’t think there’s enough words in the world to express how grateful i am to see the amount of content she’s released for all of us to read. all of the time and patience she has dedicated into her works clearly shines bright in between her lines that we take for granted of her hard work. one of my fave fics from her is daunting, and idk how much feedback she’s gotten from it in her notifs, but i don’t see enough people flooding her inbox about it bc it was such a joy to read 💕

@neovisioned — han!! yo if there is one writer on nctblr that i aspire to be, it would be miss han right here because holy hell, her way of story telling never fails to put me at awe. one of my all-time fave fic from her is cupid victorious because she flawlessly executed angels au and the rawness of her characters makes her fictional character feel real, as if she’s telling the story from her very own set of eyes. this carries onto my other favorite fic of hers, profane. while it is essentially based on a poem, she effortlessly crafted her own story from the verses that could only make the gods weep at her doorstep 💕
