realizing that a big reason why i like house md so much is because in order to watch it it demands that you engage with it critically... everyone in the show sucks by design, they've all got numerous biases, you have to contend with all of that. you get to see messy opinions and feelings, you get to watch characters as their opinions develop and change (or don't), and you get to compare it all against what YOU think.

CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994): not my absolute favorite wong kar-wai, but definitely the one that feels most like home. i'm a city girl through and through, and deeply relate to the narrative's mournfulness over identity - its yearning to (re)gain a sense of personhood amid frayed connections and persistent loneliness. the feelings just fucking hit.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS (2001-2003): easiest answer for me to give, because these films made me a film hoe. it doesn't matter how many times i've watched the behind-the-scenes appendices for each movie - how much i've dispelled the ~fantasy for myself by reading up every factoid about production possible. for years, i return to middle-earth gladly.

SAW (2004): uh, this one is a comfort movie because i revisit it every single time i want to shut my brain off. the ending always gets me, man.

ZODIAC (2007): when i was a kid, i primarily watched crime dramas. but if i had to pick ONE to watch for the rest of my life, it would be this. like most of david fincher's movies, it's cut-and-dry until it's not - anticipatory without being unfulfillingly predictable. a simple kind of compelling. side note: it's also a film i show to my loved ones a ton.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2012): maybe it's andrew garfield's aura, james horner's devastatingly emotive score, or peter parker's sheer earnestness. or maybe it's because marc webb directed all the my chemical romance music videos that raised me into the emo i am today. but i fucking love this movie and how it simply represents a very specific, nostalgic time in my life.

INTERSTELLAR (2014): sci-fi, my beloved! nolan, my other beloved! this is one of his most tender works - an emotional rollercoaster that starts and ends on the undeniable force that truly runs our universe - love. i'm left a puddle of jelly after every rewatch, and am thankful for it.

MISS STEVENS (2016): this is the timmy chalamet movie for me, although he's not the reason it's particularly comforting. rather, it talks about how being an adult after a certain age is daunting. whatever road maps that are left over from our more youthful years now seem smudged and the future is forever unclear. this film is about kindly and empathetically navigating that - the journey, not the destination - and i that, to me, is the very definition of being comforted.

FACES PLACES / VISAGES, VILLAGES (2017): part of agnes varda's sheer genius was always her ability to encapsulate snapshots of time while simultaneously creating timelessness in her films. she was always so viscerally present on the pulse point of whatever topic she wanted to unpack, and you feel held in each of her frames. faces places was the first of her movies for me, so it holds a special place in my heart.

UNICORN STORE (2017): every day i thank brie larson for making a film so unabashedly warm, sparkly, and vibrant. it's so healing for the inner child in me who felt forced to grow up too soon.

MIDSOMMAR (2019): this film is all about trauma and mental illness, which is extremely unnerving and confronting to watch. despite that, i experience such unadulterated catharsis whenever i put midsommar on. feeling seen and getting to unpack these issues safely within the confines of horror - that's everything to me.

Thoroughly Unhinged Pulp Musicals Crack Theory: Margaret IS Urania

Okay so this is all very wild but I wrote here about Kal's name and the Antikythera connection reminding me of Kalliope (shout out to @its-short-for-jackalope for figuring out that Matt's using the K spelling), and about how this could possibly link Kal (and maybe Margaret) to the Greek Gods. And well, Jack and I have been losing our minds chatting and that gave me this goofy but very fun idea. (Theory under the cut.)

If we theorize that Kal is Kalliope, and also the same species as Margaret and the Traveler... then wouldn't it make sense to assume that Margaret and the Traveler are Muses as well? After all, they are notably both women, on top of having godlike powers and apparently being timeless.

But which Muses are they? I'd say the Traveler is most likely Polyhymnia--the internet can't seem to agree on any universal rule for depicting her but some common tropes include white clothing and a cloak, which matches up with Jackie's Traveler character art. Also, alongside being the Muse of hymns and sacred poetry she is the Muse of agriculture, and the first thing we ever see the Traveler do is grow an entire ecosystem.

But most importantly Margaret has to be Urania, the Muse of astronomy herself. This fits with her connection to the moon and knowledge of astronomy, math, and science. When we visit her penthouse in the Great Moon Hoax, Matt even mentions how she has all of these "models of planets spinning," matching up with the orbs and astronomical gear Urania is often depicted with. (If we wanna get really down in the weeds, he also describes the place as "like a museum," and, uh, guess where we get that word. From the greek word "mouseion," which indicated a place dedicated to/belonging to the muses, essentially one of their "homes." If this theory does turn out to be true, then Matt and I are going to have to have some words because this being an actual clue would be INSANE.) (Shout out to Jack for reminding me to look at the description of the apartment. Partner-in-fandom-insanity-crime, as ever.)

(Also this theory makes "Urania Propitia" simultaneously funnier and somehow even more emotional. Like, yeah the Muse of astronomy really is favoring Maria Cunitz at that very moment. Our girl made it big.)

But then what brought them to where they are now? Polyhymnia traveling alone and sending her sister through time and space, Urania seemingly exiled with no memory of her past, and Kalliope on a very special voyage through the Sargasso Sea...

Ohhh, that's a good question but simultaneously I also don't really watch a lot of movies, funnily enough?? But if I had to pick... Comedy - I kinda mulled this over for a bit but I think I'm gonna give this one to Megamind. Not only is it like. A surprisingly fantastic subversion of the superhero genre in so many clever ways but it's also just.... Incredibly timeless, I think. AHEAD of its time, even. All the comedy lands and it gets funnier the older I get. Horror - Does the entire SAW franchise count? I'm counting the full thing since I have trouble picking a favorite. It's a series with such simple origins but It absolutely spirals (pun intended) into what I consider the world's weirdest soap opera. Like as soon as you think there's nothing left for them to say about this story they come out with a new movie. It's a wild, dramatic, and very gorey time. Sci-fi - I??? Honestly don't even know??? Unless if there's something super obvious that isn't clicking in my head yet I can't really think of any sci fi movie that sticks out to me, oof

Ranking Batman Arkham Trilogy Games

Since its beginning in 2016, the Batman Arkham games have been noted as the best superhero game. In 2023, this statement does not falter. In honor of the Batman Arkham Trilogy Switch release, why don’t we reflect on the games themselves and remember what about them and put them on the map?

Asylum

Each of these games is memorable in its own way, with Asylum standing out as the first in the trilogy. This game begins the series with a two-button setup, which was uncommon at the time of its release. Allowing users to go on the offensive with the attack button and counter-enemy moves with the counter button.

Societal Attitudes on Immigration: The Impact of Racial Bias

In our so newly globalized landscape, immigration is a complex topic spiritually, philosophically, politically, and otherwise. Within exchanging culture and physical location, and considering globalization’s context of colonialism and the invention of modern racism, immigration is deeply intertwined with societal attitudes around race and ethnicity. 

Considering perspectives from our speaker Ernesto Cisneros, the Latino/Mexican- American experience is unique in many ways. For one, California has a Hispanic/Latinio population larger than any other ethnicity. While a larger presence often feels like it should mean a mirrored distribution of power or education or capital or even stories, these communities are still vastly underrepresented in all fields. This type of “majority-minority” contradiction is difficult to wrap one’s head around when seeing it play out. It can feel very confusing, especially considering the cultural blending and separation that can happen simultaneously. Cisneros talks about how confusing these giant issues can be, especially for children, and the children he sees almost every day as an educator. Conservative narratives about immigration are especially unforgiving. The recent reemergence of Nazi-era “Great Replacement Theory” rhetoric now shapes itself to fit modern-day America, pulling in Mexican immigrants as job-thieves and people who are taking advantage of America’s powerful economy and social benefits without doing the hard work of being a “real” American. This timeless reactionary argument is not only baseless, but also applied hypocritically. Beyond the obvious lack of consideration on what exactly constitutes a “real American” and why that makes them deserving of something, in conflicts that involve other conflict-torn areas, racial bias rears its horns. 

For example, the response to mostly white Ukrainian immigrants is significantly different. The U.S. and E.U. governments, currently very strict and conservative on border policies, enthusiastically accepted Ukrainians and allowed them to skip bureaucratic formalities that others must spend years adhering to. In Poland and Belarus, physical violence that often takes place against refugee and immigrant populations was notably missing for Ukrainians. 

Middle Eastern immigrants also experience unique forms of discrimination and xenophobic rhetoric. Post-9/11, discourse about colonialism’s ravaging effects in Middle-Eastern governments and hugely ruinous U.S. invasions is somewhat overriden by anti-Islam and “terrorism” rhetoric. Many are fleeing from deathly emergencies, but that fact gets dropped when our discussions shift to racial and ethnic arguments.

Lina Sergie Attar, founder of the Karam Foundation, speaks in her New York Times op-ed about the utter destruction of Aleppo, a once-vibrant city where she spent much of her childhood. She ironically mentions how people claim “victories” as gaining more land foot by foot during this conflict, rather than aiding the many starving Syrian people and halting the constant death and destruction. This attitude applies to most situations regardless of race, but when racial bias dehumanizes victims of conflict,

Many of these differences are not simply racial; for example, pro-Ukraine sentiment is also partly an extension of anti-Russian sentiment and politics. Yet it is undeniable, especially considering current events in Israel and Palestine, that pre-existing systems of bias certainly do affect our conception of immigrants and refugees from different backgrounds. I hope that being conscious of this bias can help us limit its impact on how we act as Global Scholars.

The design is especially meaningful in wedding rings, because it brings out the beautiful and feminine aspect of women.

Calla Lily has no thorns and have a very faint scent, therefore symbolize purity and child-like innocent.

As a believer of dualism, I always want to find the perfect balance between the opposite polarities. The LILY ring, for example, the contrast plays beautifully between the finely crafted miniature flower verse rough texture of the raw stone. Also playing with contrast is the texture on the shanks; the tree bark texture verses the smooth surfaced on both rings. Indra's Net symbolizes the universe as a web of connections and interdependences [...] I seek to revive it as the foundation for Vedic cosmology and show how it went on to become the central principle of Buddhism, and from there spread into mainstream Western discourse across several disciplines.

The Avatamsaka Sutra (which means 'Flower Garland') of Mahayana Buddhism uses the metaphor of Indra's Net to explain cosmic interpenetration. This sutra explains everything as both a mirror reflecting all ana an image reflected by all. Everything is simultaneously cause and effect, support and supported. This important sutra was translated from Sanskrit, and its logic further developed in China under the name of Hua-yen Buddhism.

The Hua-yen tradition was developed by a series of thinkers, most notably Fa-tsang (CE 643-712). Through him, it passed on to Korea and other East Asian countries, becoming known as 'Kegon' in Japan. Hua-yen is praised as the highest development of Chinese Buddhist thought. D.T. Suzuki called Hua-yen the philosophy of Zen, and Zen the meditation practice of Hua-yen. Francis Cook explains the core philosophy of Hua-yen as follows:

'Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the jewels, glittering "like" stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring.'

Masters of the Universe: Snake and Lizard Men

Reptilian humanoids started appearing in MotU in the first, 1983, season of the Filmation cartoon.

Here’s Lizard Man, a supporting hero who appeared in four episodes.

Here is Fang Man, a bad guy who only appeared in “The Time Corridor”.

Bands of unnamed reptile men then appeared as wizards’ henchmen in two episodes, “House of Shokoti” and “Ordeal in the Darklands”.

So it already looks like we have two races of lizard people on Eternia. In Season 2, Kobra Khan was introduced.

In the very last episode, “The Cold Zone”, writer J. Michael Straczynski revealed that Kobra Khan had left the underground Repton civilization to commit crimes with Skeletor and friends. While their name was generically reptilian, named characters such as King Pythos indicate the entire people’s snakiness.

In 1986, the Snake Men faction was introduced to the toy line and its accompanying mini-comics. Members King Hiss, Sssqueeze and Snake Face were treated as having been banished by the Elders to a timeless dimension while living their evil lives thousands of years ago. Writer Steven Grant alluded to Kobra Khan’s people as descendants.

However, by the time kids would have opened this comic, the entire first season of (literal) sister show She-Ra would have aired, in September-December 1985. There, two other characters identified as Snake Men, Rattlor and Tung Lashor, were seen as members of Hordak’s Etherian Horde.

Both the mini-comic “King of the Snake Men” and newspaper comic arc “Vengeance of the Viper King” addressed these two being magically teleported from Etheria to Eternia to join King Hiss.

Unnamed Snake Men made two further appearances in the 80s: as hunter-gatherers who preceded Eternia’s first humans on the planet in the newspaper comic arc “Terror Takes Time” and as disorganized enemies of the five good wizards (Elders?) who organized under Hordak in the Power Tour stage show.

So much for official Snake Men. But we’re not done:

Almost simultaneously with him joining the Snake Men, Kobra Khan was seen commanding a band of evil lizard men (not to be confused with Lizard Man the hero) in the mini-comic “The Fastest Draw in the Universe”.

Jump forward to the summer of 1987 and fans were introduced to Saurod, a blue-scaled, bronze-armored mercenary employed by Skeletor in the live action film. He also appeared in all sorts of comics (mini-comic with the 3 film-related action figures, monthly comic, newspaper comic).

While his armor looks like a fuller version of the partial plate armor we saw in the Repton culture, whether he was even native to Eternia was not explained at the time.

Then there’s one more before the Classics era. When He-Man traveled to another solar system in The New Adventures of He-Man, the Mutants of Denebria has their own lizard person, Lizorr.

He was said to be from the Gorn Desert of Denebria (a homage to the original Star Trek’s reptilian Gorn). His name suggests there’s no connection between his people and any Eternian Snake Men who ended up making their homes on Horde planets in the past two millennia or more.

Miraculous Hair Style Analysis: Marinette

Full disclosure, I really do like the character designs of Miraculous Ladybug. The characters have clearly recognizable silhouettes and the color palettes used in the designs are used for multiple purposes simultaneously. The color palettes are used to create a clearly recognizable "brand" for each character, and they're also used to create cohesion or contrast within certain character combinations and they even have symbolism. Hell, I even think the highly criticized villain designs are delightful! Especially the Bubbler.

But, to the main point of this post: this show puts a lot of emphasis on visual storytelling. That's why the character designs place purpose over what teens would find fashionable. I personally appreciate this choice because it makes the show more timeless than trying to use contemporary fashion would do, and also because I hate it when superheroes show up to fight crime in street wear. Where's the pizzaz in t-shirts and jeans? (The early 2000s Teen Titans comic is a pet peeve of mine for revamping so many outfits into this.) This purpose is so ingrained into the character designs it's even visible in the characters' hairstyles. This analysis is all about picking apart a few of the more standout examples of hairstyles as tools of characterization. First up is Marinette.

Marinette's hairstyle is a classic girlie girl hairstyle. The twintails go great together with the choice of pink as her primary color, because both traits are attached to femininity and childishness. Miraculous Ladybug is about Marinette growing up, so the childish hairstyle emphasizes her role as a person in need of growing. But that's not all it symbolizes and this comes together with the other hairstyle Marinette knowingly picks, the bun on the top of her head, that we see in her old school photo in ‘Reflekta’.

The tightly-wound hair bun often symbolises someone who holds themselves back, who is controlled and measured. This is why the primary person we see with this hairstyle is Nathalie, who never has a hair out of place. Miss Bustier's version of the bun is meant to make her look professional, but the strand of hair escaping from it reveals that she can also be more laid back. Nathalie aims to always remain strictly professional, but Bustier openly cares for her students on a personal level and is very invested in them all growing into the best them they could be.

Marinette is more like Bustier than Nathalie in the symbolism of her hair. Marinette tries to control things (in fact, she's a bit of a control freak), she can act put together when she knows what she's doing, like when she's acting as class president or Ladybug, and Marinette. As an aspiring designer, she probably wants to appear professional and capable. Marinette is also pretty uptight, since the smallest thing going unlike how she planned can make her panic, and that's important to when the hair comes down.

In 'Love Hunter', when Marinette's hair comes out of its twintails by accident but Adrien still says: "It's the first time I've seen you with your hair down." "Letting your hair down" is another way of saying "relax", and this occasion is the first time Adrien has seen Marinette truly unreserved around him since the day they met. Marinette leaving her hair down after Kagami and Adrien compliment her is Marinette letting her guard come down and simply enjoying her time with Adrien and Kagami. It's only after Kagami and Adrien accidentally remind her that she can't really understand the things they go through that Marinette ties her hair up again, and, soon after, she leaves the two and runs off because she can't be her unreserved self around them anymore, constantly second-guessing everything she says or does.

We also see Marinette with her hair down in the split off timeline in 'Cat Blanc', when Marinette is so focused on being in love with Adrien and being with Adrien that facing something that challenges that state brings her closer to Akumatization than anything else she's experienced. I've repeatedly stated that my analysis on the themes of 'Cat Blanc' is that the episode's lesson is "easy solutions don't last". Because Marinette and Adrien getting together happened so easily in that timeline, Marinette grew careless. It was the classic happily ever after moment, and the story usually ends after the happily ever after, so Marinette wasn't ready for Gabriel to make his play.

Speaking of Gabriel, as is fitting of Marinette's foil, Gabriel hairstyle is the typical short-haired version of the uptight-do: it's slicked back with such care that it looks more like a solid helmet than a hairstyle and Gabriel is never seen without his hair in this style. The message Gabriel's hair sends is clear: appearances must be kept at all times. Marinette also is overly concerned and conscious over how she might be perceived by others, hence another reason for an “uptight” hairstyle.
