IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE CULT'S DYNAMICS

Disclaimers: Sensitive topics are discussed below the cut; please do not incite drama, speak hate, or engage in bullying. I am not a mental health professional; I make no claims of expertise (in anything). This is a collection of my thoughts about what is currently happening on the Taekook side of ARMY, in the hopes that it may help us as a community respond more effectively to the toxic parts of our fandom. If you click below this cut, you are assuming responsibility for your own behavior and agreeing to engage with my blog respectfully, or you will be blocked.

THE NARRATIVES AT WORK

I submit that shipping Taekook is both an evolving conspiracy theory and a living cult.

There are various narratives within this subgroup, but in general, to ship Taekook, one must believe Kim Taehyung and Jeon Jungkook are in a closeted gay romantic relationship.

One also likely believes that their company (both BigHit and Hybe) and everyone around them have always actively hid their gay relationship.

Initially, Taekook (the “real” gay couple) was being hidden by Jikook (the “fake” gay couple) because Jikook was somehow more popular in Korea and therefore considered to be more profitable.

And this was the main narrative for years. It got Jimin dragged and hated online and in real life, to the point there was even a credible shooting threat at a concert.

Now, the narrative is being modified in light of the video footage revealed this week involving Taehyung and Jennie.

If Taekookers accept at all that Jennie and Tae were indeed photographed holding hands in Paris this week, then they likely believe both their companies are using this as a PR Relationship stunt to hide their real gay relationships before military service and comeback projects.

This belief includes:

1) assuming Taehyung and Jennie are not being honest;

2) believing Taehyung and Jungkook have no agency or power within their own companies; and,

3) all of their members and managers are also in on this nefarious plot.

Whether they believe Taennie is just cosplayers in an orchestrated smear campaign, or two actual idols in a PR Relationship, regardless, a large segment of this subgroup still believe that Jimin is the company favorite who gets special treatment.

Therefore, things that should be Taekook’s (such as songs and subunits and couple-like interactions) are instead given to the company’s king of fan service, to the point where Jimin “assaults” Jungkook with “unwanted” attention and physical contact.

THE LOGICAL FALLACIES

As amazingly popular as our Korean It Boy is, I have serious doubts about Jimin being the “company favorite” ever since Hybe took over two years ago.

As the “company favorite,” I’d love it if he got more lines in group songs, or was allowed to film as many music videos as he wanted, or could be given more than 10 days of promotion time for a project he spent a year working on. It would be stellar if the “company favorite” had in-ears that worked correctly during live broadcasts, or was invited onto IU’s show, or could host streaming parties or sell exclusive merch. To say nothing of the “company favorite” getting far more reality show appearances and magazine interviews and a Disney documentary with behind the scenes footage! Heck, I’d settle for his songs not being split on Spotify, his views not being culled on YouTube, and maybe just one congratulatory statement to the press or even just a CAKE celebrating his historic Hot 100 #1.

At least Jimin was “allowed” to include a hidden track with Jungkook (that wasn’t advertised or available to stream, so not fan service) and he was allowed to queer code his Like Crazy music video. So I believe he has some agency and say over his projects. I’m not sure he’s entirely understood or appreciated by his company—frankly, I think his potential was underestimated—but I don’t claim he’s a victim. Victim narratives play into cult dynamics.

But I digressed. I was talking about logical fallacies.

Let’s entertain the idea that for more YEARS, Jungkook and Taehyung have been horribly abused by their management and forced to hide their relationship.

They never thought to address this issue when they were renewing their contracts?

Also, what’s up with all the footage during RUN episodes when they are standing together, or on the same team, or hugging and cuddling, or leaning their heads on each other’s shoulders and legs?

Why were they allowed to flirt and dance and do skinship on stage—and all that stuff even made it into official footage?

Now let’s entertain the idea that Taennie is a PR Relationship.

So… two rival companies, just coming out of a bitter failed deal around a music industry monopoly, are now working together to make people believe Jennie and Tae are dating?

Even though idols LOSE popularity and company stocks take a DIVE when couples are revealed?

So Taennie is the strategy to promote solo albums and upcoming projects?? And both companies’ PR teams say “We can’t confirm it as it is their personal lives.” So no PR statement is the PR strategy??

We know it’s bullshit. It makes about as much sense as Hillary Clinton running a child sex trafficking ring out of the basement of a pizza parlor that doesn't have a basement.

But many in the cult believe it’s Absolute Truth.

The question is why?

The answer is in the dynamics at play here.

CULT DYNAMICS

It starts with a MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN.

Baby ARMY get curious about BTS, hop on YouTube or TikTok, and are bombarded by the algorithm that claims Taekook is real.

Unless they go searching for original content (which takes up dozens and dozens of hours to sift through and much of which sits behind a paywall), they will not have much to contradict these claims.

Most older ARMY are understandably so sick and tired of the ship discourse that they don’t go into Taekook spaces and duke it out in the comments. Plus, content creators know that Taekook content gets hits and likes, which translates into passive income, so they keep making it.

See this video where a cult leader shows you she made over $109,000 in a year just from her Taekook edits:

So in the din of all this nonsense and noise, it’s up to Baby ARMY to seek out other voices, other input, to form an opinion. They have to be proactive. And sadly, a large segment of the population lacks critical thinking skills and do not WANT to seek facts.

We live in a very busy, post-fact world, where “credible messengers” (i.e., someone you know and trust) tell you their opinions. Then you try those opinions on for size, and they eventually become your opinions. It’s faster, it’s easier, and…

It lets you be part of the IN-GROUP. Next thing you know, you're part of a group chat with 400 indoctrinated members, spitting conspiracies like gospel truths.

In today’s globalized, fast-paced, hyper digital world, most people cannot tell you the names of their neighbors or local butcher or even their state’s politicians, let alone what all they stand for. But they can tell you how the Kardashians feel about organic salad in a plastic bowl, or what Trump believes about election results.

There’s a lack of real-world relationships that tether people to a shared reality.

And yet, there is a human need for Tribe.

A cult uses that instinct for TRIBE by constantly re-enforcing the notion that People Out There don’t understand, aren’t very nice, will even persecute you for knowing the truth.

But People In Here, the IN-GROUP, they appreciate you, they are reasonable and open-minded, they will be there for you when everyone else turns their backs on you and puts you down.

All you have to do to belong to the IN-GROUP is subscribe to these CONSPIRACY THEORIES.

First, you should think about becoming Anti-Establishment.

You cannot trust the Authority (company, government, scientists, whatever). The Authority is corrupt and will lie to you because it wants something from you (money, votes, microchips in the vaccines, whatever).

Do not trust what your eyes show you and what your ears hear. Believe your in-group. Be loyal to your found family. Your found family is SPECIAL.

Second, you need to begin to wake up to the Signs and Wonders.

Once you’re willing to see the truth, suddenly there are all these hints. All these little “Q-drops” of information. Like Taekook touching face moles during a song. Or seeing slowed-down, edited videos of facial expressions that look like evidence of jealousy. Or maybe hidden meanings behind tattoos of tigers and green mics. Or making a secret handshake or symbol with their fingers. These Signs and Wonders are FOR YOU.

*Now, I’m inclined to give Taekookers a bit of a break on queer couple coding because, culturally speaking, similar clothing and jewelry are couple-coded in Korea. And there are just as many if not MORE theories about Jikook using similar black and white clothing, matching jewelry, related tattoos, using special numbers in songs and timestamps, and even changing up lyrics as secret messages.

The issue here is that Jikook ACTUALLY DOES SOME OF THOSE THINGS. They actually deliberately type out specific numbers on some of their social media messages. They actually have dressed in the exact same outfits or worn each other’s clothes. They actually have changed up lyrics and sung them to each other.

Even so, any reasonable Jikooker will say “all of this is suspicious as hell, but not proof.” Like when Jungkook says his J tattoo stands for Jungkook—the placement over the M is suspicious, yes—but all sane Jikookers accept that Jungkook has spoken about that tattoo and he did not say it was for Jimin. We don't sit around calling Jungkook a liar just because we preferred our theory.

Taekookers, however, want what Jikook have so badly, even as they scorn it for merely being fan service.

Half the time the hints they claim are completely made up.

They see sandal footprints in the sand, and their leaders say it’s proof that Jungkook went on a secret beach date with Taehyung. Even though Taehyung went out with a friend and his parents that night.

Taekookers will see a photo of shoes all neatly lined up and say it’s a secret ski date with Hobi. Even though Jimin owns the exact same pair of shoes and there were no photos or accounts of them ever being at a ski lodge the day after Jin went into service.

Taekookers will swear they hear Jungkook’s voice off camera during Taehyung’s vlog and insist he was hiding in the trunk of the car during the drive to film. As if JK would hide in the trunk for hours instead of just… go in a different car that didn't have a camera??

All of these Signs and Wonders require a huge leap to arrive at the conclusion that Taekook is a romantic couple.

Meanwhile, evidence of Jikook spending birthdays together and couple holidays together and going on trips alone together and having integrated families and inner circles (stylists, tattoo artist, boxing coach) are ALL fan service. Every single person is in on the conspiracy.

Yes, even when JK’s mom screams “I love you!” to Jimin and makes her son eat seaweed soup on Jimin’s birthday, (JK was clearly FORCED to make up that story) it has to be fan service.

And when Jimin’s dad posts a photo of JK’s old dog on JK’s birthday (a birthday where Jimin visited him in the middle of working on his album, but Taehyung did not even though he wasn't working on anything), it's fan service. And when Mr. Park hosts a give-away event at his café where JK’s music is playing and cap and photo are proudly displayed next to JImin? Absolute fan service; he’s a money-hungry, attention-hungry cad, don’t you know? Even the charity he and his son do are fan service!

But JK went bowling with Wooga, so, Taekook are married. (Legally married. Not in Korea. But you know. They ARE married. Coming up on their third anniversary already!)

It’s all there, if you’re just willing to see the Signs and Wonders. And believe your cult leaders when there's nothing to see or wonder about at all.

Third and perhaps most important, is the Star-Crossed Lovers angle. The VICTIM CARD.

You see, it’s not bad enough that openly gay couples face pure hell in conservative countries anyway—losing their jobs, their families, sometimes their will to live because the stigma can be so bad. But on top of all that, for years and years, Taekook have been forced apart.

They’ve been just tortured by Jimin’s attention-whoring greedy nature, and made to endure fabricated fan service skinship!

(When Tae and JK look happy to be around Jimin, it’s just because they are professionals and such good actors!). Darn that Park Jimin, the abuser and sexual predator!!

And after so long being forced to hide, now in solo era, poor abused victimized Taekook can be loud. So loud. So very loud and wild and free!!

After all, during the Vegas concert, Jungkook sat on Taehyung’s lap!! He's NEVER sat on any other BTS members' lap (except for all of them).

And when Jungkook came online and said “Keep being jealous, I’ll keep holding Jiminie!” and that Jimin was HIS! Then fans kept asking him about Taehyung, so he also said Taehyung was his. It was totally his own organic idea (except for how it wasn't).

When fans kept pestering Jungkook during his camping VLive about Taehyung, he said he was forced to admit that Taehyung was attractive, he’d never seen a man so attractive! (FORCED to admit it! So romantic!)

Meanwhile, as all this shakes down, there’s this scandal in the press that Jimin didn’t pay his insurance premiums because his mail was omitted by the company. News of this dropped EXACTLY the moment his first OST With You came out, and he went totally quiet.

And then, Jungkook also went quiet for a while too. He deleted all his previous Insta photos that were personal and changed the layout to be totally professional. He went to the White House. He did a collab. He partied for JitB. He went on a Meat Tour of Korea. He did a concert with his members. He headlined World Cup. But mostly he was getting quieter and quieter.

Eventually Jungkook deleted the app entirely. Sometimes he stayed in his home for six days at a time. He stopped working out or going into Hybe; he started drinking whiskey. And nowadays he doesn’t even want to look at the comments on lives. Not because he was sick of the Taekookers or anything, but because “the company is forcing them to hide!”

Of course.

And all throughout 2022, Taehyung and Jungkook are paired up for things, and Tae's talking about a fortune teller saying he and Jungkook were “fire and water.” And rather than be taken as cute moments between friends, these are just VERY LOUD SIGNS AND WONDERS.

Then there are leaks online of all these photos that involved Tae and Jennie.

And thus begins tons of lives where he mentions Jungkook.

I'm not saying Kim Taehyung had an agenda to throw fans off the scent of his actual relationship, but I'm also not NOT saying that.

Whatever his motivations, the cult interpreted this as a direct message for Taekookers to keep the faith!

And indeed, Taekook do hang out—sometimes openly. (Sometimes where there’s press that make them hold up signs while cameras are going off—but that’s not for work, that’s a date, because the security team there wasn’t Hybe’s, and it was a friend’s premiere.) Sometimes quietly, where they share photos of hanging out afterwards.

But it cannot be just two friends hanging out. It’s Signs and Wonders!! SO LOUD!! SO FREE!!

So many reveals—mostly coming from Taehyung, but Jungkook doesn’t often deny them. And it’s mostly Taehyung stroking Jungkook’s hair or laying his head on Jungkook’s thigh or whatever—but Jungkook doesn’t stop him. And Jimin seems totally unbothered by all of it, which is strange because it sort of debunks years of his efforts at fan service.

Yet, clearly THIS cannot be fan service or misdirection.

It can’t just be friends playing games, or a TikTok made for work. It can’t be recording someone without their informed consent for attention. It can’t be going to a concert with other members and sitting in separate rows as friends. Or going to a musical or movie to support friends. Unlike all the things Jungkook has done with Jimin, this has to be Real Love!!

So just to recap:

When the cult had no evidence of Taekook hanging out, they were a private couple.

When the cult had ever-increasing evidence of Taekook hanging out, they were being loud.

When the cult had evidence that Jikook hang out outside of work, that was just fan service.

When the cult had no evidence that Jikook hang out outside of work, that was just fan service getting exposed.

When the cult has evidence that Taehyung has a girlfriend, that’s a punishment.

MARTYRDOM

You see, Jungkook and Taehyung would go on WeLives without permission, remember? And Taehyung set up a dual live chat on Insta and JK didn't seem that into it but he was persuaded. Then they giggled and couldn’t find much to talk about for ten minutes. And Taehyung said he would take full responsibility for it.

And the cult now believes that “taking responsibility” means pretending to be in a heterosexual relationship. Even their insider sasaeng accounts predicted it!

Never mind how mad all of this seems. And it would be one thing if just one or two ideas were far-fetched, like looking at a pair of shoes and making assumptions. But all of it is far-fetched.

Facts do not matter. Because you cannot trust the Authority. You can only trust the In-Group.  

And the In-Group sees Signs and Wonders. So the In-Group knows the Real Truth.

The In-Group DECIDES TOGETHER what is real.

They can make entirely fake edits; cosplay; post false witness statements; harass models, coworkers, brands, businesses… they can hire trucks to circle the building with loud speakers, protesting and shouting their truth!!

And anyone who doesn’t believe the Real Truth is a Fake Taekooker.

No disbelievers allowed. Get out of the tribe. Only the faithful can stay in the Tribe.

Right now, you might be asking yourself: Why would you stay in a tribe like this??

Because the dynamic is ever-evolving, which is titillating, and participants get a sense of power, because they are able to help craft the narratives—by being so smart as to see the truth where others are blind sheep—so they can bond over how unique they are.

Plus… TAEKOOK NEEDS THEM.

The boys absolutely depend on their support. You see, Taekookers are the real HEROES here.

They understand the boys like normal people never could. If you know you know, and they are steadfast against any and all lies presented as evidence. They are loyal.

The whole world is against their baby bear and baby bunny!! They are the boys Only Defense. Just take a look at this video of their rallying cry:

If you've got martyrs, you've also got... CRUSADERS.

Yikes, right?

So, here are millions of fans who were lied to, misled, misinformed… They developed relationships over time with people who also believe this misinformation… They get a sense of power in crafting their own reality, in which the objects of their affection are victims and they are the heroes… And the only way to prove themselves worthy of the group is to stalwartly ignore anything that contradicts these narratives.

This is a literal, textbook cult.

Cults use deception, isolation, peer pressure, group-think, and suppression of critical thought. To varying degrees, all Taekook spaces do this too. (And yes, other ships and solos and mantis ALSO rely on these tactics. But I've never seen anything quite so open or pervasive in ARMY like the Taekook cult tactics.)

I feel I should make one thing should be made clear: a LOT of people sincerely believe in Taekook.

But there are also a lot of Taekook content creators who sincerely believe in the money they make off people believing in Taekook.

Like all cults, at the end of the day, it's a scam.

Now there’s evidence of a real relationship, and of course anyone who has invested time and money in Taekook is going to be pushing back—hard.

So how do we navigate this chaos?

Well, most cults end in one of two ways: an FBI raid, or everyone drinks the Kool-Aid and dies.

But more often than not, cults don’t really end so much as fizzle out over years.

Plenty of cults are still alive and well despite amble debunking (Scientology, Q-Anon, Illuminati, flat-Earthers, Larries—what they believe doesn’t really matter; it’s how they believe that makes them a cult.)

 Cults are a bit like hydras—you cut off one head, three stronger ones pop back up.

They won't stop. They have to BE STOPPED.

HOW TO DEPROGRAM A CULT

Well, back in the 70s, in the early days of deprogramming, the only thing that was effective was to separate the individual from access to the cult (by kidnapping if you had to), then bombard them non-stop with facts (using imprisonment or restraints if you had to) and eventually they are coerced into re-integration. But none of that is humane or legal by today’s standards.

It also leads to relapses.

Really the only way to deprogram cult conditioning is for a mental health professional to slowly and methodically discredit the cult leader(s) and gently present contradictions.

(How can Jungkook really be in a relationship with Taehyung if he’s always mentioning Jimin? How can Jimin be hurting Taehyung and yet they are on FaceTime for hours, trading fan art and watching tv shows? Why would the two most rich and famous pop stars in the world need a publicity stunt?)

And even then, the cult member has to be sort of able to question things for themselves, and it just helps to have other supportive people echoing their own questioning sentiments back to them.

It can take YEARS until a cult member reaches the breaking point and begins to listen to Out-Group ideas. (On average, five years, to be exact.)

And then they may begin a journey of self-expression, where they openly voice doubts or complaints against cult narratives. They may even engage in transference, jumping off the Taekook ship and onto another (the need for tribe is very real). This is an extremely vulnerable stage and should not be taken advantage of.

At this critical moment when someone is tittering on the fence, trying to figure out what reality is, you need to REWARD THE BEHAVIOR YOU WANT.

You want them to question. You want them to express their grief and doubts. You want them to look for real sources of information.

This is NOT the time to kick someone when they are down, or look for “gotcha” moments to shame them publicly.

If you see a Taekooker wondering if they’ve been lied to this whole time—they HAVE. And that is abuse. And abuse victims need to be handled with care.

I know that Taekookers have dragged Jimin to hell and back for years so I’m not about to preach love and acceptance.

But it’s also fair to say that Taekookers have been gas-lit and realizing that can be traumatic.

Wounded animals are dangerous. A traumatized human lashes out. And you know who the prime target always is. They are already starting to take it to Jimin directly.

I strongly recommend you take a very cautious approach if you engage with them right now. Especially if you’re thinking about arguing with them.

People who defend Jimin or Jikook end up doxxed, suspended, harassed--and someday, I fear a wounded cult member will get physically violent.

Be especially careful because plenty of big accounts are closeted Taekookers. Here's a thread exposing some "mystery cult" members:

THE MOST EFFECTIVE RESPONSE

I normally don’t try to police people or preach too much, but I’m going to give you some unsolicited advice if you managed to read all this:

Don’t go into Taekook tags or spaces. Don’t debate them. Don’t talk trash about them or the members. Don’t slam-dunk or spike the ball with snarky words or memes. Don’t give them a taste of their own medicine. Don’t be cruel.

First of all, don’t do any of that because Jimin and Jungkook would be mortified by it.

But second of all, don’t do it because it just makes them dig in harder; it adds weeks or months to the deprogramming timeline.

The goal is to get the cult out of ARMY fandom. Because they thrive on a victim/hero complex, attacking them reinforces cult dynamics.

I believe there is a better approach.

First, you can and should go Gray Rock whenever possible.

Starve them of oxygen. Don’t acknowledge them. If you do, be generic in your responses—boringly bland, detachedly polite. Ignore them completely; their hot takes do not matter.

Block and report if warranted, but never engage. On some level, they really want to be persecuted for their beliefs. It's why they keep coming into Jikook spaces looking for a fight.

But their beliefs are so ridiculous that they aren’t worth our time. Instead, direct your focus on what you want, which is to promote and celebrate Bangtan.

Second, you can provide what’s called a Graceful Exit.

It doesn’t always work if they know that’s what you’re doing, but it is perhaps the most effective technique, especially if they are already questioning the cult narrative.

You see, a shamed human being gets defensive, doubles down, won’t listen. But a human being offered a Graceful Exit Out of a Bad Place gets to reinvent themselves in a way that allows them some dignity while they change direction.

A Graceful Exit has a few components to it:

“Hello, Taekooker. I also saw a lot of misleading content when I was a baby ARMY. The algorithm feeds you Taekook content almost immediately. Then you make online friends, and they all believe in Taekook. Suddenly everyone is telling you really complicated theories about how Taekook is being hidden. Once you believe that, you have to also believe that Taekook are lying by omission, that Jimin and the members are also lying, that the company executives and translators and managers and staff are all lying, that Korean ARMY is lying, that fellow I-ARMY is lying… and that’s a lot of people spreading a lie for no real gain. Now that you have some evidence that Tae is happily in a relationship with someone else, it’s only natural to question your beliefs, because YES, Taehyung and Jungkook absolutely love each other. But are they IN love? NO. For my part, I trust Taehyung. I love and support Taehyung. I don’t spread the idea that he or Jungkook engage in fake relationships. If you support them, then you’ll accept what they are showing you. When you’re ready to stop shipping Taekook, ARMY will be ready to welcome you back. We can stream together and vote together and help our boys achieve their dreams. We can watch their content and go to concerts together and enjoy fan-works. But what we can’t do is make up really complex stories around BTS’ reality. Our place as fans is to appreciate their music, and let them live their own lives in their own way. It’s time to let go of old ideas, and embrace the new things they share with us.”

This tactic allows the cult member to feel sympathy for being human. It provides understanding that they’ve been deceived. It appeals to their higher nature and love for the objects of their affection. And reassures them they could have a place in a bigger tribe if they let go of the in-group.

It invites them in, instead of calls them out.

Now, you guys might not be willing to do that. Especially considering the hate trains and rape jokes and death threats they gave Jimin for years. Believe me, I get it. I GET IT.

So if you see someone spewing vitriol, now is not the time to call them in. Now is the time to block and report.

However, if I take out my anger on them, it’s serving my own feelings.

And I’m here to serve Jimin, Jungkook, and BTS, not my own need to be right.

So I believe the best way to do that is to Gray Rock the Die-hards and provide a Graceful Exit for the Questioners.  

Many cult members are not going to believe in Taennie unless Kim Taehyung makes an announcement directly--and even then, he’ll have to do it in such an emphatic way that they buy what he sells.

So we should accept that the cult is going to be around for a long, long time. Conserve your energy, my dears.

But for the ones who just got fooled but don't intend any harm, we can either hope they let go of their own volition, or we can try to make room for them as part of true ARMY.

What we shouldn’t do is get down in the mud and start slinging. Everyone loses ground that way.

I am not gonna lie- I find it a tad bit funny that people get upset when Jimin tops reputation indexes. Like the Forbes 40 powerful celebrities list. People are mad he’s the highest kpop soloist. They are foaming, and KTHs are just confused. They NEVER learn. He’s unarguably the one with the biggest brand value and name recognition from the group, it’s been that way since 10 years now. Also Jimin has one of the biggest solo fanbases in Korea, he rivals IU and lim young woong. It's not about which member has gotten paks, a number one on melon or the most Instagram likes and followers. Jimin IS the most popular idol in SK, just because seven reached number 1 on melon and like crazy didn't, means nothing when we all know what went down.

And if you actually look at it like crazy still is the most successful SOLO song to come out of chapter 2 it peaked at no 3 on melon, with almost a peak of 200k 24h unique listeners. Because notice how they only hold on to seven but ignore 3d and snty? Set me free pt2 had no longevity but It still reached top 15 on melon top 100 and reached a peak of 100k+ 24h unique listeners, vibe was also a hit on kcharts.

The fact that he managed to do this well on kcharts and consistently chart on melon despite years of being isolated from the Korean GP and with everything that happened during his debut is a huge feat. All he needs is the right song/right timing and the korean gp will fully get into his music. But even right now he's still the idol with the largest fanbase in SK.

Anyone can get a number 1 on melon these days if you're lucky, it doesn't necessarily mean you're that popular in Korea. If the Spotify SK charts wasn't enough indication...

They flexed those "industry insider" rankings all of 2023, rankings from no reputable source mind you or were sponsored by Hybe. And no one cared because we were well aware of the huge campaign that was going on at the time. But now it's 2024 all the members have enlisted and Jimin is still the only one who's managed to hang on to the top 10 of brand reputation.

Last year I prayed Jimin's debut will be one for the books, but this year I want him to take it further, especially with kcharts. Like crazy did good but I am hoping for something bigger than that this year 🙏🏾 because that's the only reason why they still doubt how popular he is in SK.

2. Hotel Del Luna (2019)

Till this date Hotel Del Luna is one of the most unique dramas to be ever made. From the plot to the characterization, everything is unmatched. This 2019 fantasy drama deals with the story of a supernatural hotel, where the souls of deceased people come and rest for a few days before they carry on their journey towards their next life. Hotel Del Luna is run by Jung Man Wol, played by IU, who is bound to this hotel in a neither alive nor dead state due to the sins she committed in her lifetime. The only way Jung Man Wol can break free is by seeing off the very last guest of the hotel. However, for that she needs some assistance and that is provided by the hotel’s new manager Koo Chan Sung, played by Yoo Jin Goo. 3. Tale of the Nine tailed (2020)

Are you interested in Korean folklore? And do you enjoy horror? If yes, then Tale of the Nine Tailed is the right drama for you. This 2020 drama tells of a tale associated with a Gumiho, nine tailed fox and his immortal journey to find his first love’s reincarnated version in 2020. Lee Yeon, played by Lee Dong Wook, is a nine tailed fox who gave up his mountain spirit position to find his first love, A Eum, again. A Eum is now reincarnated as Nam Ji Ah, played by Jo Bo Ah, who comes across Lee Yeon while looking for her lost parents. There he comes across Lieutenant Jung Tae Eul, played by Kim Go Eun, someone he already knew but never got to see before. They fall in love as the story progresses but start to face several complications as two different worlds start mixing up with each other due to the villain’s advances. The fantasia of this drama lies in the magical power of a royal flute, which can open doors to several different versions of the universe, can delay death and age, can change, stop and help in traveling through time. The drama is a perfect example of a rom-com with a magical backdrop, a perfect choice when you need something light-hearted yet thrilling to enjoy.

5. The Sound of Magic (2022)

“Annarasumanara” – the sound of magic, is the most realistic fantasy drama to be included in the list. This 2022 drama represents a perfect picturization of struggles and survivals. The story deals with the life of a young, intelligent yet poor schoolgirl Yoon Ah Yi, played by Choi Sung Eun. She fights for her survival each day as she tries to pay off her father’s debt while paying for her and her sister’s school fees all alone. By the turn of events, she meets Ri Eul, played by Ji Chang Wook, who is a magician sheltered in an abandoned amusement park. Ri Eul brings a wave of magic and happiness in the tough life of Yoon Ah Yi and soon they get another companion, Na Il Deung. Na Il Deung, played by Hwang In Youp, is Yoon Ah Yi’s classmate and the top student, who is immensely burdened with his parents’ expectations. Both of them try to find a respite from their real life struggles with the help of Ri Eul’s magic. With only 6 episodes this drama can make you cry and smile at the same time. The character of Ri Eul is so mysterious yet so touching that it will leave you wanting for more, especially because of the twist in the end.

I know people have already spoken about NJ and YG’s… interesting choices to sing instead of rap in some of their music, but I haven’t seen many people talk about their choices to write music in English. This is not the first or second or third rodeo for NJ, but the incorrect grammar/syntax and zero interest in having his lyrics checked by a fluent English speaker bothers me so much. Especially, bc NJ in particular uses it under the guise of him experimenting with language (which he is brilliant at in Korean) but in reality half of his experiments just make no fucking sense. I won’t even get into it with YG bc he’s not even pretentious about it, he just writes nonsense in English and puts it out without a care in the world. The first time I listened to his latest collab with IU I felt like I was having a stroke. Of course, you can extract some meaning out of their English lyrics but you can also extract meaning out of a 3-year-olds babblings and that doesn’t make them a lyrical genius by any means. My point in this is not by any means to ridicule non-Native English speakers. English is not my native language either. On one hand, i’m all for tearing down pre-conceived notions of language as a part of culture. But on the other hand, how can you pride yourself on being a writer and just choose to write absolutely nonsensical bs just bc you want to succeed in a wider market? It just seems so sloppy to me. I just really want to know if I’m an asshole and this is just a peeve of mine or if other people also feel this way lmao.

You're not an asshole, it is cringe to listen to English lyrics with incorrect grammar and this is coming from someone who's first language isn't English. It seems to be an issue with kpop in general, and right now I'm reminded of drama by aespa where they go "I like it when I baddest", one of my fave kpop songs of last year but I close my eyes at that part.

BTS as a group has never had that problem, as far as I can remember but namjoon and yoongi especially are guilty of this with their solo music. They think sounding like you just sang one of the most poetic lyrical lines ever written makes up for the bad grammar, and I guess it does because I've barely seen anyone mention it.

Genre: Angst, little fluff, poetic like writing

Warning: adaptation (?) inspired (?) by Sewol Ferry's tragedy. mentioned of death, abandoned (?) ship sinking. Bunch of angst.

a/n: one little, short story that I wrote for my assignment- but I altered it to be fan fiction structure- the original character's names were Ace Cooper and Rose Stan ㅋㅋ but I wrote Ace imagine him as Yoongi - oh and this story also attributed to Sewol sinking ship tragedy, something like that, few bits of a spring day by bts and through the night by IU.

You recalled the memories fondly.

Walking along the path of the road near your parents' house reminded you of your past. With you and him together learning what's the meaning of life and love. Walking hand in hand as both of you grow up. When he smiles, it's warm like the sun in the evening, when he laughs, it resounds through the wind, soft and breezy. You met when you were six, still a child, eyes full of mischief, energy filled with young spirit. Bright smile on your face as you asked for his name.

“Hello! I’m Y/n. L/n Y/n. What is your name?”

Eyes warily looking at the girl in front of him, your rosy chubby cheeks, pink lips, and eyes twinkle like a little star that he sees in his bedtime storybook every night before he sleeps. Timidly, he answered, “I’m Yoongi. Min Yoongi.”

Yet, just like writing his name on the sand, soon faded along the waves. Disappearing far away, leaving you here, lonely just like a lonely whale.

Soon enough, you realise that he is more important than you ever dared to admit. Like you hate his gut, but no one can touch him. When you notice his eyes dim a little bit because of the bullies, when his smiles are not really reaching his eyes, he forces the smile out. Or every time he eats his favorite food, his eyebrow frowns as if he is mad whenever he eats something he loves.

“Why do you look mad every time you eat?” you asked, as both of you were sitting on the bench during lunchtime.

“I’m not mad.” He pointed to his lunch box, “My mom just made the most delicious food ever!”

Every bit of his habit you know, you don't really want to, but he already lives in your heart rent-free. You know what he loves and what he hates, you even can draw constellations of stars with the knowledge of him.

But fate has different plans for you. When you were sixteen, he moved to another region.

“You really are going?”

“Yes, can’t live here alone, you know.” He jokes.

“No, you can live here with me and my family! You know that my mom doesn’t mind.” You insist, still trying your luck coaxing him to stay. “We can give you the guest room!”

He smiled; eyes softened as he ruffled your hair.

“Y/n, you know that I can’t.” He takes your hand into him as he promised. “I will keep texting you and send you a letter every month, okay?”

Despite that, you lost contact, and you missed him. You don’t know what has happened to him. Suddenly, he just stopped texting, and the letters also stopped coming. You really hope that he is okay. Happy and healthy.

Every winter came by you would bring two mittens as he always forgot. Every summer comes by you bring two bottles of water, because he always has a patchy throat. But he's not there with you.

Now, you turn twenty. So does he. You think he must be happy, with his new friends, he must pass the exam, entering his most desired university, a few steps closer to his dream. He must be getting taller now, you smile, endearing with those memories. But then, you saw someone, a guy, eerily the same one you imagined just a few moments prior. Is that him? No way…

Against your will, you sprint to him. And without you realising it, “Yoongi!” You tug his arm. You feel like your heart stops beating when he turns; so familiar yet so different, his eyes locking with yours. It’s been so long since you last said his name. It feels foreign.

“Y/n?” And the guy looks at you, now fully turning around facing you.

“Yoongi?” You repeat, eyes getting wet.

“Yes, it’s me.” He smiles.

Not a single time wasting as you leap into his arms. All those devastated feelings, horrible assumptions, and overthinking about how he’s doing, are gone with the mere presence of him in front of you.

“You stop texting me.” You mumble, face deep in his chest. “And the letter stops coming too.”

He holds you tight, as he pets your head. “I’m sorry, Y/n. Things are a bit chaotic over there. But now I’m free from the chaos, so I’m coming to you running.” He chuckles, feeling his chest vibrated. “Liar.” You pinch his shoulder as you chuckle, “I’m the one who is running up to you.”

A few moments pass in silence as you bask in each other's presence. It’s kind of awkward with people passing by, and you hug like a long-lost lover; no, you are just best buddies, maybe.

“Hey, people are staring,” Yoongi claimed, voice near to your ear.

Reluctantly, both of you break apart. Yoongi smiles, taking your hands into his as you both continue walking ahead, “Do you really miss me that bad?”

You turned your head, gaze narrowed to him, “What? You’re not?” A bit offended that as if only you adore this friendship. Yoongi laughed, “Of course, I missed you. That’s why I’m back.” You hummed, “You better be.”

You relive your childhood memories, spending time going through the city recalling those fond memories.

“Will you ever tell me why you suddenly disappear?” You can’t help but ask him. It keeps bugging you as to why he’s gone all those years.

“I’m always here you know, guarding you like a guardian angel.” he wiggled his eyebrows, teasing you.

As the sun starts setting, the night shows itself, now you are in front of your house, and Yoongi insists on seeing you back home. Making sure that you're back safely.

“You’re not coming in?” you asked, “My mom would be elated to see you, you know. I’m not the only one missing you.” You feel a bit reluctant to let your best friend go.

“Nope, I’m staying at the hotel in the city.” He said as he put his hand into his coat. “I don’t want to trouble her. You know how she gets if I’m coming.” He smiled, endearing at the thought of your mother welcoming him home.

“But, I promise I will come to see you again.”

“Well, last time you promised too.” You pouted, “but then, poof, you're gone like dust.” And he laughed.

“Okay, I’m sorry about that, but this time, I’m serious. I will come back again soon, okay?” He tries to persuade you. But you still do not believe in him. “Then, can you give me a specific time when you will come?” You try to bargain.

You don't want to wait for him anymore, because all those years of waiting are painful to you. You indeed realise what you're feeling but then you still need time to rearrange your heart, your feelings.

Tapping on his chin, thinking “Maybe, next weekend?” He tilted his head, “How about that?”

Elated, you nodded your head enthusiastically, “I can’t wait to see you again.”

As he promised, he tried to see you every weekend, unless he was busy. Both you and Yoongi are in your sophomore year in different colleges in the city but are still nearby to each other. You promised to meet in the middle, spending time with each other, filling those years of longing when you were apart.

These few months, you fill your time with friendly banter and jokes like you used to. Every time you spend time together, you can’t help that you feel like your heart could burst every time he is near you. You realise that you absolutely have some feelings for him, but you need to ensure your feelings first.

A week later, you meet up as usual at your favourite cafe spot. Both of you carry on your date with usual conversation, updating your days in college, playful banter and other meaningless conversation.

Yoongi sips on his coffee as he just realises that he needs to tell you something. “Oh, by the way, next weekend, I have a college trip with my classmates,” he cast a glance at you instinctively where you just picked on your cake before continuing, “wherefore, I might have to skip our weekend meet.” There, he said it.

Yoongi has been restless with guilt since he knows how much you value your weekend meeting; thus, he feels guilty about skipping it. When he looks over to you, “Y/n?” trying to gauge your reaction you are still mindlessly picking at your cake. A few moments pass then you speak up, “How long?”

“Just for three days.”

“I want to see you off!”

Skip to the present, now you were standing near the jetty before Yoongi boarding. “Hey Yoongi,” you start, breaking the silence. “After your trip, can you come and see me at the playground where we used to play when we were kids?”

Yoongi stared at you, confused. “Um, sure. But why at the playground?” You pursed your lips, kind of bashful. “Well, there is something that I want to tell you.” Your eyes stray to the sea behind Yoongi, somehow embarrassed, “It's just that playground, looks … fun!” It’s where we first met each other, but you can’t bring yourself to say that out loud. As Yoongi is about to retort, suddenly his friend calls out for him. They are about to board.

“Well, see you after your trip,” you said, smiling.

Yoongi stared at you for a little before he decided to pull you in for a hug. “I will come running to you after the trip,”

You scoffed, “Liar.” pushing his shoulder playfully while chuckling as you broke the hug, “I was the one who came running to you.” Yoongi giggles, “Okay, then let’s run to each other next time, okay?”

And off he goes, after a few repeated goodbyes. Your chest feels constricted, you can’t help but be reminded of the last time you were bidding goodbye and he’s gone for a few years.

‘Don’t overthink, he is just going on a trip for three days. Soon, you will see him again and tell him how you truly feel about him.’ You console your heart while promising yourself that you will tell Yoongi the truth of your heart.

As the days pass by, you and Yoongi text each other, updating your day with pictures of what you do, with mundane and sometimes exciting as Yoongi showing the sea and activity on the board. Until the day when Rose, dreading to see Yoongi, arrived.

Posing in the mirror, choosing your clothes, which one suits you better? Which one will make his heart beat a little faster?

Ring… ring… ring… Unknown number.

“Hello, Y/n's speaking.”

“...”

And you indeed come running to him, and he’s not there.

“Is this Y/n, Yoongi's friend?” - “Yes, I am.”

You arrive at the jetty, it’s crowded with parents, family, and friends. All were devastated by the news.

“This is Yoongi's brother. Yoongi once gave me your number. I don’t know why before, he just said in case of emergency. And now…” Somehow you feel like your heart stops beating, feeling like your nightmare turns into reality. “What happened?” Reluctantly you asked.

You are walking past everyone, and without thinking, you just push anyone in front of you, heart beating loudly. Still not grasping this reality.

“We got called regarding Yoongi's cruise ship.” Yoongi's brother sniffles, this is not good. “Their ship was sinking last night when they were on their way back.”

And when you're by the sea, the ship that Yoongi rode a few days ago is not there.

“He and his friends didn't make it.” Yoongi's brother broke down in tears as your heart broke into pieces. “Come to the jetty, y/n. We will wait for you here.”

Then, you saw a woman in her 50s, eerily familiar with the guy that you came running for. You make your way to her, “Mrs. Min?” you ask tentatively, not sure since it’s been years since you last saw her. “Y/n?” She asked, voice hoarse from hours of crying, “Yes, it’s me Y/n.” Confirming that it was you, Yoongi's mother immediately grasps your hand, “Yoongi…he’s” She tries to tell you, but the words are not coming out. And you understand, since you're still hoping, Yoongi's ship miraculously arrived, and all of this was just a prank or misinformation from the ship’s captain. A cruel joke for them.

Afterwards, you are in a group of crying messes, yet no one cares since everyone is in their own devastating state, crying for their loved one, sailing into a ship straight to heaven.

After the news of the cruel, awful tragedy spread out into the media, you didn't dare to open your social media. Your friends who know of your friendship with Yoongi, send their condolences to you and his family. Throughout the funeral, you were there, holding onto his picture. Even your family came and reunited with Yoongi's family. you still couldn’t believe that night was your last conversation.

“Well now, I should go to sleep. Tomorrow I’m coming back home.” Yoongi talks through the phone, he’s been telling you about his trip excitedly, and you hum, “Yeah, tomorrow you should come running to me, remember?” Yoongi laughs, making your stomach flutter with butterflies. “Of course, I’ll come back to you running. Full speed!”

And that day before he’s boarding, that was their last hug. You should hold him tighter, not letting him go.

It’s been a few months, but you are still coming back to your favourite cafe, sitting at the exact spot with two drinks, iced caramel macchiato: his favourite. You fixed your gaze on the seat opposite yours, where Yoongi used to sit.

“Why didn’t you sit here next to me?” you asked, since you think it’ll be easier to talk.

“Oh, because here, I can see you clearer.” Yoongi grinned, making you a blushing mess.

Sighing deeply, you stand. Bringing both drinks, you make her way to the counter, handing out one of the drinks to the barista, which he gladly takes, as usual.

You walked through the city, the shops, the park, reminiscing those memories time and time again. You're exhausted. You think that going through the memories could lessen this longing, this grief. However, you know that this is not healthy, and not helping at all. It just makes you hold onto him harder, tighter, rather than letting go.

“I did, and I still do.” Your expression changed to dejected. “But I can’t move on from him if I keep reminiscing the memories of him here. It's just too much. I’m still moping in regret because I didn’t tell him that I loved him. No, I still love him, Lynn.” You broke down in tears, the one with an ugly sob from deep in your gut. Lynn pulled you in for a hug, softly petting your head, trying to console you.

For the last time, you walk along the path of the road near to your parents' house, reminding you of your past. With you and him together learning what's the meaning of life and love. Walking hand in hand as you grow up. When he smiles, it's warm like the sun in the evening, when he laughs, it resounds through the wind, soft and breezy.

south and north korea are twins, north korea being the older one. NK’s strong spot is singing and SK’s is playing instruments, so during the joseon era NK would be singing folk songs while SK plays the haegeum, gayageum, or daegeum. later, SK learned dance with the rise of kpop, and can dance very well, on par with many 3rd and 4th generation groups

going off of the kpop headcanon, SK definitely has a tiktok and instagram account where SK dances to a kpop song with one of the members. goes to every MAMA and MMA and cheers for everyone. maybe interviews/has podcasts with some kpop idols on a youtube channel or something

america’s favorite soloist is IU. one day, korea takes him to IU to meet her at a fan signing, and america is this close to screeching out of excitement. his voice is shaky. when IU posts the picture she took with america on instagram, he gets the tag notification, throws his phone across the room, and rolls around on his bed screaming

korea has 3?4? houses. there’s 2 in seoul, with one being the hanok(traditional korean house) SK and NK lived in during the joseon dynasty after moving out of the royal palace, and one being a luxury apartment with a view overlooking the namsan seoul tower. then there’s one in busan, and a pension in jeju.

during the japanese occupation of korea, SK and NK tried to show their resistance in many ways, from placing the mugunghwa(national flower of korea) around their hanok instead of the crystanthemum of japan, to even joining the march 1919 demonstrations

after the korean war, SK would overwork and give all strength to help the citizens of korea, regardless of food or sleep. while helping rebuild the country, SK notices that even though other buildings surrounding it were destroyed to some degree, the hanok SK and NK used to live in remained completely untouched.

in 1883, the first korean diplomats went to america, getting to see san francisco and new york. korea was quite underdeveloped at the time and was an agrarian country, so electricity was very new to them, with none of the delegates able to completely understand what it was due to its versatility. one of the delegates described riding a train in his diary: “the speed of trains are such that they made me feel as if I was flying up through the clouds.” they were also panicked as they rode an elevator, worrying there was an earthquake. it’s fun to imagine that NK and SK went to america as well, and experienced these things too. 

SK would definitely get along with france and canada

france bc they’re both interested in fashion(especially with the current rise of kfashion) and kbeauty). SK always gives france skincare tips and takes him to IOPE lab in Myeongdong so france can get custom skincare products. once SK had france try ddung-caron(means fat macaron in korean), and then watches france struggle as he figures out how to eat it, before going full on gastronomist and analyzes the macaron. when france heard about korea’s crush on america, it was over for korea. france wanted to give “advice” after a world conference, and it resulted in korea having a windows error type breakdown with a completely red face, unsure if korea will ever be able to look america in the eyes again as korea keeps note that france has no filter oh my god

canada bc historically, canada was the first to teach korea english. due to earlier interaction than with america, canada is slightly more fluent. they also played a big role in the korean war. going off of someone’s hc i saw on tumblr, they would definitely make fusion food together, like hotteok(traditional korean pancake filled with honey or sugar) with maple syrup. they also worked on goblin(the k-drama) together and canada enjoyed that more people, especially koreans, flocked to quebec after watching goblin. also canada would definitely be like the middleman when america and korea are still pining for each other. at a time where america still didn’t know much korean, he would ask canada what a word meant. korea would go to canada and ask about american culture before going to america to stay there for a while

SK would also get along(though would get overwhelmed at times) with turkey. turkey and korea, especially in the 2010s, have a strong relationship. there’s a turkish culture center in korea. most recently, one of korea’s famous chefs went to turkey to try a dessert called kaymak, and after that many koreans flocked to the turkish center or even traveled to turkey to try kaymak. turkey would definitely slap korea on the back unexpectedly as a greeting.

korea can be many things, like being immature by going along with america’s antics a lot, but not stupid. korea can be very mature at times, and comfort america with words of advice based on experiences from the joseon dynasty, and america suddenly remembers “dang.... i forgot korea’s a lot older than me.” korea isn’t afraid to catch up with the times and incorporate korean culture into modern elements:

there’s a starbucks and baskin robbins that was built as a hanok, with the starbucks one actually being a 100-year old hanok that was revamped to become a cafe

kpop also began to embrace the korean culture, especially in agust d’s daechwita and stray kids’ thunderous.

korea’s also proud of the film industry, especially with parasite and squid game, with how the country’s faults and flaws are shown to a foreign audience, but not completely deterring them from appreciating the country, as well as the promotion of culture, especially in squid game. america kept talking about squid game for like, 4 months afterwards, to the point where korea got a little annoyed after a while. once america called dalgona(candy made with sugar and baking soda) a “cookie,” korea was so close to buying a ticket to nyc and giving him a lecture on dalgona

whatever trend the country embraces, korea does, too. last summer in 2021, there was a big mint choco trend. cafes immediately put mint choco drinks on their menus, snack companies started making mint choco flavors, and even KFC sold mint choco dipping sauce. there was a split opinion, with about 40% saying mint choco sucks and tastes like toothpaste, and 60% being part of the mint choco fanbase. when you’re a fan in korea, you go all out. 

korea’s alcohol tolerance? it’s there, but korea’s only about 4 small shots of soju(korean alcohol) away from switching off for the rest of the day. this is a problem, especially with the hwaeshik(means company dinner in korean). usually in hwaeshik, bosses invite employees to a dinner at a restaurant. due to the harsh work culture, it’s important to go. usually, people drink alcohol with the dinner to relax more, and the boss keeps insisting to drink more. so korea leaves the restaurant absolutely conked out. america notices this, so whenever he knows korea has a hwaeshik, he waits outside to carry korea back home.

korea also has to teach america that couple names aren’t thrown around all the time, with oppa(korean girls use this towards older brothers, older male peers, older boyfriends) being an exception. america called korea nae sarang(my love) one(1) time, and korea overheated and couldn’t respond for about ten minutes.

korea pleads america to go and rent some hanbok(korean traditional clothing) together. “we can enter the gyeongbokgung(translated as “palace greatly blessed by heaven,” located in Seoul) for free if we rent hanbok!!” actually its korea’s ulterior motive to see america in hanbok bc he would look very regal and elegant compared to his easygoing style.
