*STAR SIGN LEGACY CHALLENGE (BASE GAME VERSION) ☆ﾟ*･｡*･

I have copied some of the rules below for your convenience.

·  A twelve generation legacy challenge based on the twelve signs of the zodiac. Each generation will have a different set of goals and requirements before the new heir takes over.

Rules:

Aging must be turned on, but you can have it at any length you wish (I recommend long but it is entirely your choice).

Each goal must be met before the new heir takes over.

You cannot give the sims dramatic makeovers or personality adjustments. Slight changes to the appearance are fine but they can’t be made into a whole new sim.

NO MONEY CHEATS.

Vague guidelines/suggestions:

Heir can be any gender, they don’t have to be female. They can also be any sexuality. 

Children don’t have to be genetic, they can be adopted, BUT they must be adopted as a baby/toddler.

Mods and custom content can be used.

The generations will offer three traits, you do not need the heir to have all three traits, but they MUST have at least TWO of them.

If you cannot add any of the required traits when the heir is a child, you are able to choose another trait and change it to the correct trait when available (either as a teen or YA). You can do this through cheats in CAS. But the same rule applies that you must have at least two of the offered traits by the time the heir is a YA.

If you do not have all of the packs required to complete the requirements for each generation, either find a similar alternative or skip that rule. But where possible, you must complete each generation requirement.

(OPTIONAL) I have assigned each generation a colour, you don’t have to follow this at all, or you can only use it as much as you want. You don’t need a whole yellow house with a sim only dressed in yellow, for example. It’s up to you!

(OPTIONAL) I have also given every generation a different theme to name their children. Again, this is all optional and you can ignore this, I just thought it would be fun and add a little extra challenge by coming up with different names you might not always use.

THE GENERATIONS

Generation 1 - Aries

You have always been an independent and confident person. Even since childhood, you knew what you wanted to do and had a plan to get there. You dreamed of becoming- no, you WOULD become a businessman/woman. You wouldn’t let anything get in your way and put all your efforts into climbing to the top in the world of business. You make friends with like-minded people and bump heads with those you don’t get on with as well. Your main issue is that you have never liked it when people tell you what to do. You often get easily frustrated when you think people are saying that you’re unable to do something. You never turn down a challenge and have always been extremely passionate about all of your interests. Anything bold and daring, you’d try it. You live for a life of thrills, always in action. You have always been loyal, sticking by your friends through thick and thin. It’s the same in relationships. In your eyes, love is built on trust and loyalty, and you would never forget this. You will always fight for what you believe is right and support the people you love, no matter what.

Requirements:

Any partner must be a good friend before you start romancing them

You must never initiate a breakup or divorce, but your partner can if it fits the story

Generation 2 - Taurus

You grew up close to your parents and, because of their hot-headed nature, you have quite a short temper as well, and your problems can often seem trivial. The smallest things can offset your balance and get inside your head. But that’s okay, because you’ve found something to help you cope and distract you: food. You love to cook. Whenever you get stressed, you go to the kitchen and let all your frustration out into your cooking. And it pays off, your food is incredible. You spent your teen years cooking and dreaming about a future doing the same. Your dream is to one day become a master chef, but you need to make a name for yourself in the cooking industry first. Starting from the bottom won’t be easy, but you know you have the drive and the talent to make it. Nothing will stop you from achieving your dream. Even though you had a really close relationship with your parents, they did work a lot, meaning you spent a lot of time home alone.

You are unique and will prove that to everyone, in the most dramatic and fun ways you can think of. You’re a bold and confident person who wants to stand out, in every sense. You always worked hard in school, but it came easy to you to get good grades. You’re a natural genius, and aren’t afraid to show off and boast about it. You have a variety of friends and enjoy meeting new people, and you’ve never been afraid to experiment with fun and different styles or hobbies. Because of your parent’s hot-headed attitude and their frequent freaking out at little things, you’ve become a bit unpredictable as well. No one knows what mood you’ll be in, or how you’ll react to things. You enjoy this though, you like that people see you as an enigma. Life would be boring without a bit of spontaneity! It’s the same with your work life, and in romance too. You can’t settle in one job for a long time; you always get bored and want to try something new. You’re no different with relationships. You never really have a serious, long-term partner. It’s not that you aren’t interested in romance, it’s more that the idea of exploring new romances and people excites you more than settling down with one partner forever. You have always been inspired by your grandparent’s love of adventure. You want to explore different cultures, try new things, and be courageous! But can you keep up with this lifestyle forever?

You’re never able to fully settle as a child due to your parent’s erratic ways and brash decisions. Your life is often uprooted by moving houses so you never feel fully stable or like you fit in anywhere. You feel like you never really had any true friends growing up; you always have to leave them behind when your parent decides it’s time for a change of scenery. You try to stay in touch online, playing games with them and chatting, but it isn’t the same as being with them in person. Your parents always love you and treat you well, but you can’t help but dream of having a ‘normal’ family. With parents who live together and living in a forever home. You have always wanted this life for yourself. But when you get it, you realise that this ‘normal’ family isn’t everything. Things aren’t as easy as they always seemed. Your partner has been keeping secrets from you, and you find out in the worst way possible. Absolutely distraught and heartbroken, you begin to put all your effort and love solely into your children, often forgetting to care for yourself. Your children are innocent in this and you won’t let them suffer because of your partner’s mistakes. It takes you a while to get over the pain they caused you, but, eventually, you are able to pick yourself up and find a new focus in life. Your children will always come first. You decide to join the tech guru career. Over time, you learn that the main thing in life is having people who love and support you, and just because a family isn’t always together, it doesn’t mean it’s broken.

Generation 5 - Leo

You know you were always spoiled as a child, and you never go without something you want. Despite all this, you do truly appreciate everything they do for you to try and give you a happy childhood. They teach you to be selfless and pure, and you keep these values in mind through your whole life. You aren’t a selfish person at all, you just know your worth and won’t let anyone treat you any less than that. Throughout your childhood, you have a passion for the arts. You’re always doing something to creatively express yourself. Anytime you have the opportunity to be the center of attention, you take it. You always knew you wanted to be known in the world, but would never give up on your creative hobbies for the sake of your career. You use your creative mind to post style vlogs. The more you post, the more your following grows, and your fame is quick to follow. Before you know it, you have paparazzi following you around and screaming fans chasing you, and you love every second of it. You adjust well to the celebrity lifestyle, and live a life of luxury with your equally famous partner and children. Who said you couldn’t have it all?

Generation 6 - Virgo

You never really fit into the famous lifestyle you were brought up with, it didn’t feel like you. You didn’t appreciate being in the public eye and couldn’t wait to move out and stop being known as the famous child of the social media celebrity that is your parent. While the rest of your family would rather be outside, followed by fans and paparazzi, you had always much preferred being home, tucked up with a good book. You still had a good relationship with your parents growing up, but felt like they unintentionally put extra pressure on you to be the best. The whole world watched you grow up, so they would know if you put a toe out of line. You always worked hard to avoid this embarrassment, for both yours and your parents’ sake. Having famous and rich parents meant that you had so much handed to you growing up. A lot of people would have loved this, but you hate it. You want to make your own life and create your own path, without your parents’ help or money. You were never interested in romance or love, but you love the idea of being a parent. You heard about how your great-grandparent had your grandparent with a friend, and the two would co-parent to raise them. This inspired you, and you realised you didn’t need a partner to be a parent. And so that is what you do. You and a close friend agree to raise a baby together, in a completely platonic relationship. The child would still grow up in a supported and loving home, and no one said that there had to be romance involved to look after a baby together. Growing up in a home built solely by your parent made you appreciate every detail, you knew that everything you owned was built with love. Your parent was a perfectionist so you knew that everything in your house would be of excellent quality, and this was what you’d grown to expect, in every walk of life; excellent quality. Since your parent cut themselves off from fame and fortune, you never knew your grandparent as a child. As a teenager, you became curious about your extended family, so your parent introduced you. It was easy to see that you had a lot more in common with your grandparent than your parent. You loved their life of luxury, especially how posh and expensive everything was. You knew you wanted a life like this. You always had a strong sense of right and wrong, and relished in honesty and truth. You decided you would join a business career. Plus, the job paid well so you’d be able to afford your luscious dream home. Your best friend as a child came from a wealthy family, so you bonded over your love of materialistic goods. When you became teens, you saw each other in a whole new light. You started dating and everything seemed perfect for a long time. Until, a matter of days before your birthday, something happens for you to break up with each other. You were both devastated but knew it was for the best. You always loved hearing about your parents’ love story and dreamed of having one yourself. Two childhood friends who fell in love and always found their way back to each other, what’s more romantic than that? As a teenager, your romantic relationships never worked that well. The other sim never quite lived up to your expectations. You wanted them to be perfect, and they weren’t. What made it worse was that your older sibling seemed to find the perfect partner while you were both at school. How was that fair? Not only that, they had better grades than you, and more friends. Anything you could do, they could do better. You were both given the exact same opportunities as children and raised the same, so it seemed wrong that they were better than you. But the one thing they couldn’t take from you was your music. That was the only thing you knew you were better at than them. Through your teen years, when you weren’t stuck on bad dates, you were in your room playing one of your instruments. When you became a young adult, you and your sibling cut ties and didn’t really interact with each other at all. You were also still on the hunt for a perfect partner. You continue to date around, but are faced with failure. How could it be so hard to find someone to love? You eventually decide to put your dating life on hold and focus on yourself. You have always enjoyed being active and sporty but never really concentrated on it as you were so preoccupied with dating and your music. But since you weren’t dating, you could bring your attention back to fitness. Lo and behold, you bumped into someone at the gym. Someone you never expected to be interested in. Someone so different from you and your family. But this sim captured your interest and really excited you. Could it be the love you were looking for all along? After your engagement and career success, you decided it was about time you made amends with your sibling. You realised that happiness didn’t come from other people and there was no use comparing yourself to them. Happiness comes from within and you strive to become the best version of yourself.

Being an only child meant you always had your parents’ attention, and you loved it. You weren’t a difficult child but you were very playful and never took things too seriously. At school, you were known as the class clown and never put too much effort into your studies. You loved parties.  Drinking, partying, exploring yourself. Getting juiced at clubs and spending your nights with strangers, anything to have a bit of fun. You made money by doing some part time jobs. Things went on like this for a while, until one night, something changed. You were expecting a baby with a random stranger. And they didn’t want the baby. Even though it wasn’t anything you’d anticipated ever wanting, the idea of having a child of your own felt… nice. You agreed that you would take the baby in and raise them by yourself, without the other parent. You saw it as a sign that it was time for you to grow up and mature. You had to support this new little person who only had you to rely on, and you refused to let them down. You stopped partying as frequently and spoke to your parent about a job in the entertainer industry. They made it big playing music, and you had always loved all the songs you’d heard at the clubs through the years. You wanted to produce your own tracks, and it meant you could still spend some evenings out doing your standup routines. You might never be the picture-perfect and most organised parent, but you’d do everything in your power to provide for your child.

They did what they could to provide for you, but you couldn’t help but question if it was enough. They never got a real job or fully settled down, and you felt a bit embarrassed that you were brought up in your grandparent’s house since they never bought their own home. You decided early on that you would strive to be better than the legacy they left behind. You would work towards big achievements, in both your professional and personal life. You decided that when you have children, you would always do whatever you could to help them achieve and set them up for success. You started by thinking about where your parent went wrong, and worked hard to do better. You’d get As in school. The idea of getting juiced and woohooing with strangers was something you decided you’d never do. Everything you would do, you wanted to do it properly and like a real adult. Your children would learn to be responsible and have a parent they can fully rely on. You always had an appreciation for the finer things in life, and would often be seen turning your nose up at whatever seemed below you. You didn’t have the most friends because of this, partly because you never saw them being as good as you, and partly because no one liked your attitude. You didn’t mind though, you wouldn’t want to be seen with anyone or anything lower than your worth. Why settle for anything less?

You always had a passion for plants, always making sure that your garden looks healthy. So you started selling things that you grown. In the loud hustle and bustle of the night life, you could escape by focusing solely on your paintings. Watching the brush swirl on canvas. Whenever you were stressed or tense, you would go back to painting. You met someone who you’d never seen in the small town before.

Growing up you were always connected with natural world. You grow up playing in your parent’s garden and watching the pother parent paint. So you developed love for both those things. Any way you could express yourself creatively, you would try it. You were a free spirited child,used to the expensive outdoors, so you tend to be really clumsy. As a teenager, after trying many different hobbies, you found that your true calling and passion was for art. You loved to paint and craft things. It was never your plan to sell your art or become famous, you just wanted to create. And create you did. Your home was covered in your artwork. Your parent couldn’t be more proud of the caring and artistic person you’d become. So you began to think, why care what others think? What’s the point in over-thinking and becoming paranoid about people judging you? You would always have your family and animals there for you, no matter what, and that was all you needed.

im so sorry i had an ask abt what my fav T&K moments are but i deleted the draft and the ask dissapeared too... soooooo... not doing that ever again! thats okay.

i am fond of all the eras (which in my head are 1. them being on DR, 2. right after DR, 3. the 2 ssns of AS they were on (or at least Ks ssn), 4. leading up to the breaking point, 5. the "fallout", 6. reconnecting, 7. up until covid, 8. beginning of the lockdown, 9. leading up to their tour, 10. during tour, 11. after tour until the breakup(?), 12. and now idk whats going on again but we will be smarter looking back on this time in the future) for their own special weird whatevers that they had going on. but here r my fav ones:

I get upset when people say El is "emulating Max" in season three because it is so dismissive and they're missing the point.

Max's and El's friendship in S3 is one part of El learning to be outside of Mike's influence. There isn't a "but".

Mike is mad at Max for "corrupting" (influencing) El, but the reason we're shown that is because that's incorrect. Mike is the one who has to swallow his pride and apologize.

What El learns is some of her personality besides her relationship, and what Mike learns is that El's actions while she was with Max weren't bad. That whole lesson would just not make sense if El was supposed to be "copying Max."

Throughout the season, El is the one shown to be initiating interactions and taking the lead. Max shows her some fun activities when she asks. Max talks about Ralph Maccio when she saw El looking at him. Nobody even brings up breaking up while at the mall until El dumps Mike. Max is the one following here, not even verbalizing her breakup with Lucas on camera. Even using her powers, Max and El were making normal conversation until El decides to even bring up her powers.

You can think whatever you want about the morality of spying and rule breaking. I'm not saying she was right. I'm saying El's actions clearly show her agency and her personhood more than people usually acknowledge.

Getting back to her "makeover" El reaches out to Max. El hands Max her skateboard, (which imo is a visual representation of her maturity but that's a different thing) and asks her for help. El at this point hasn't hung out just friends before without someone else making plans, she is the one who asks, with no prompting from Max, what she likes to do. Max and El go to the store.

This is where people usually get mixed up. They make a post about El's looks in the seasons and they just lump in the Material Girl sequence with every other outfit when it is very different.

It starts out with Max telling El to pick out her own clothes(also after being asked), which the montage holds true to.

Let's review some images from the montage..

Pulling the suspenders. El picked out clothes she thought looked cool.

"El was copying Max because they both dress colorful" the whole season is colorful. I want you to look me dead in the eyes and say Max Mayfield would be caught dead in this outfit.

And take a look at how Max is shot compared to El, her attitude during this scene:

Now compare this to her S2 makeover.

I love The Lost Sister, and it is also about El's personal identity. The key difference is that at the time of this makeover- El WAS following her sister's lead. I'm not going to say she was wrong/right for this either, or that Kali was entirely wrong/right in this montage, but explaining that is a whole different post. This scene is visually drastically different from the Material Girl sequence. The characters' actions here are drastically different from the Material Girl sequence.

Which is why I don't think it's fair to list off the season makeovers and just write season three off. To merge it together with the others as if it isn't there for the sake of contrast. It's there to be clearly different.

55.) do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

I sat here way too long looking at my Scrivener files, wondering if I considered anything truly abandoned.

Without taking into consideration the slaughterhouse of WIPs that is my ffnet account 🤣

In ye olden days, I posted first to AFF, then to ffnet, then to various HP specific sites such as HPFandom. My very first fic was abandoned because I was 13 at the time and undiagnosed ADHD 😂 Then I moved onto my "danniperson" username and wrote two massive projects that are, yes, now abandoned. There are many projects there I started and stopped, but the biggest ones were Lost and Damned and Resistance.

I linked them even though I really don't recommend anyone read them. 😂 For one, they're both huge. 368k and 256k respectively. Secondly, they're both abandoned. So...big and abandoned, yep. Third, and most importantly, this was like a decade ago. My writing has improved tremendously since then.

I was also writing the first version of The Best Kept Secrets back then. (Original version vs rewrite/completed version.) A few issues came into play around that time that basically sent my writing drive to a screeching halt.

I was 20 in 2012. I'd just survived a friendship breakup with a longtime friend and the end of an engagement. I'd quit college after three semesters to work full time. I'd moved away from home, then suddenly back home. I didn't know what I was doing with my life. I felt like a failure. My mental health was trash. And, as ever, I was over-critical and over-achieving.

Lost and Damned Chapter 1 was posted August 20, 2011. Chapter 80 was posted March 1, 2012. 80 chapters; 368,418 words; all in 196 days.

Resistance Chapter 1 was posted November 23, 2011. Chapter 36 was posted October 17, 2012. 36 chapters; 256,318 words; all in 329 days.

Between those two projects alone: 624,736 words in 424 days. And I was trying other projects in that time period, too!

In fact, let me tally up my total word count for the years of 2011 and 2012.

Earliest start date: August 20, 2011

Latest end date: October 17, 2012

Total days: 424

Total words: 748,812

That's...a lot.

So TL;DR: I was burned out. (Also a beta reader had me feeling like garbage, but that's a whole other story.)

I was burned out, insecure, and depressed and eventually couldn't keep going on. I took a break.

Funnily enough, I came back to writing in 2015 which was...right around the time my life was getting better! I was committed to my mental health. I got a new, good job. I moved out of my dad's house and on my own. And the groove came back, baby!

But by then, too much time had passed. I was older, distanced from those works, and just plain better with writing. There is no going back, really. (Which is a shame for Lost and Damned because I was so dang close to the finish line.) (Depressingly close, ngl.)

And of the two, I've had thoughts of maybe rewriting/continuing Resistance, though it would be in a very different form. The Snarry plotline might be close-ish to the original, but it would undergo a full makeover. Only the original concept would more or less be untouched. Even then, who knows if it will happen; I'd like to! I felt like I had a solid grasp on soulmates and the Soul Bond in that one that I think I could explore better nowadays, as well as expanding on the magical theory in other areas as well.

Anyway that's enough babbling about that question, NEXT.

81.) if you could go back in time and give your younger self a piece of writing advice specific to you, what would it be?

Chill out. Seriously, chill out. Those expectations about writing you have? Toss 'em out the door. There are no rules. You are the goddess, you make the dang rules. Have fun!

Also: don't let other people's opinions get to you. Other people's opinions are trash anyhow. I mean, idk, what's a politer way of saying that? Basically: everyone has preferences and that's fine, but no one is the master or the rulemaker. There are people out there who do like what you do because they have excellent taste. Your writing is going to impact someone besides just you. And if honoring yourself, honoring your creativity and your whims and your passions is going to reach someone, anyone, that's worth more than bowing beneath other people's expectations and preferences anyway. Can't please everyone, so you might as well please yourself! And your like two fans who also have very specific niche preferences. 😂

I've made my opinion on the whole "Edward's true self is a soft marshmallow center" / "Izzy is in love with a fake persona and hates the real Ed" take pretty clear (put simply: Absolutely Not) but it's still pretty popular and I tend to read meta even when I disagree. Which means I've noticed a very specific argument that I want to comment on.

So, generally, the process of justifying woobie Ed going Kraken places blame firmly on Izzy due to the whole cabin confrontation. Some people weave this into an elaborate manipulative scheme / straight up forcing him via threats, while others are more generous (?) and just classify Izzy's explosion as Ed buckling under an atmosphere of social pressure. (I disagree pretty firmly with both.) Either way, there is one detail / accusation that I see repeated a lot:

Apparently, Izzy makes his opinion of who he really wants clear by shoving the horrible caricature picture from episode 4 - the picture that Edward was clearly distressed by - in Edward's face in an act of intimidation / deliberate re-traumatizing.

Except.... he doesn't?

This is the picture from 1x04 and accompanying quote:

"God... Is this what they think I look like? Hm? Fucking viking vampire clown with - Look at that. There's one, two, three, four... nine guns all over him. Nine guns?! I have - I, I have one gun, and one knife. Just like everyone else."

And here is the image that Izzy confronts Edward with in 1x10 (and Edward pins to the wall during his makeover):

That's no Mad Devil Pyrate with nine guns and a head of demonic smoke. That's a guy with one gun and one knife.

Self-indulgent meta-ish thoughts under the cut

Honestly, I noticed the difference in images immediately on my first watch, which meant I did not draw this (questionably) implied connection at all. When Izzy was spitting about how "This is Blackbeard!" I was pretty much shrugging and conceding his point. Because, like, he's not wrong. That is a picture of Blackbeard pretty much as we met him in 1x04, symbolic skull aside symbolic skull included because the man keeps one on his office desk for kicks that I forgot about briefly.

There's something very interesting about the fact that Izzy goes for such a plain image. There's no fancy title. No horror. Hell, on inspection I think that image shows Edward's tattoos and single sleeve outfit??? I was wondering if the show made that art themselves and now I think they must have.

(I think they made both images, because the first one is harder to tell but might also have the sleeve / tattoos thing - just less accurate. However it's also clearly based on the A General History of the Pyrates illustrations from the 1700s where he has like six guns on his chest, while the second one is more show specific.)

And what does that say about Izzy??? A whole library of books on pirate legends and he gravitates to the image of Edward that seems to have been drawn by someone who actually met him? That's based on the guy he actually served under / loves, not the myth they spread around the ocean together???

Like holy fuck, when Izzy says "This is Blackbeard" he means it wholly literally. The guy in that image is the man he knew for years, while the guy standing in front of him is a complete fucking stranger in a pink robe, and he's been waiting for however many days for the depression fog to clear enough to see if there's even a trace of his boss / friend / love left post-Stede. Instead "Ed" makes his first appearance on the deck after the breakup and sings a song about his feelings and then earnestly asks why they are being pirates.

I still think Izzy started that conversation with intent to resign. He'd completely given up - not on the "Blackbeard" persona, but on the Edward he knew that had earned the title (and his respect and devotion alongside it). Not for being some kind of horrible devil, but for being brilliant, and the greatest sailor he'd ever known, and the Captain he was loyal to above all else. Izzy is lost at sea, and there's sure as fuck nothing keeping him on this particular boat anymore.

And then, pretty much purely by accident, he pisses Edward off just enough that his "Ed" mask slips and...

"There he is."

Quick styling thing I need to talk about:

When Ed is around Stede he almost always has his hair pulled back from his face:

Sometimes he pulls it all the way back (when they go to the party) and after they switch clothes he has it all the way down (I gotta...think more about that) but mostly he wears it like this, so much so that I think we tend to think of the messy half-bun as his “default” style. And honestly? Great styling choice, HMU team. It’s cute and just a little bit soft and makes him look very open and accessible, and this is how he chooses to present himself almost all of the time he’s around Stede and Stede’s crew.

He’s still wearing his hair like that in his post-breakup emo phase:

...right up until he throws Lucius overboard and does his evil-again makeover. After that he always has his hair all the way down, often falling in front of his face, and it completely changes his look.

To be sure, everything about him changes at this point. He completely changes his body language, the way he stands and moves, the way he speaks. And the way he’s lit and photographed changes dramatically too. But the hair is definitely a Thing. He just looks a lot more, idk, feral with it down, and it has this effect of making him seem bigger on screen while also shielding his face like a kind of armor, in much the same way that I think his beard does. (See again this post about face touching which I kept thinking about while screencapping.) It’s both intimidation and protection which...isn’t that what the whole Blackbeard persona is about in a nutshell?

And we have actually seen him styled and lit and shot this way one other time in the series:

From a Doylist perspective I know these scenes in episode 3 are about making him seen mysterious and scary to the audience--we see the legend of Blackbeard before we ever see the face of Ed, the person. But also like, this is his cabin, on his ship. So you have to wonder if this is the way he was used to presenting himself to his crew, before he hopped on board the Revenge. And now that vibe is back, with what’s left of Stede’s crew, and we just know it’s not gonna be good time for anyone.

Eda The Harpy Lady

As promised this is part two of Knock Knock Knockin’ on Hooty's door.

Let's take a look at Eda's past

It started with Teenage Eda being at home on the day that her father Dell Clawthorne leave for a mission and is not going to be back for a long time.

He wanted to leave in style but he ends up leaving the house with only one eye. Teenage Eda feels guilty thinking that it was her fault but Adult Eda says that it's all because of the Owl Beast. I honestly think that it's no ones fault. The Owl Beast is an animal/beast, animals are scared of fireworks. People who have dogs or any other pet know that they are scared of the explosion that's cause by fireworks. Since the Owl Beast is an animal/beast it was scared of the explosion that the fireworks make and attacked the only person who it thought was responsible for it, Dell.

The second memory is about Raeda's breakup

It shows us that Raine hates being lied to and they feel like Past Eda isn't telling them everything. Raine has decided to join the Bard Coven and suggested to Past Eda that it's time for them to see other people and to break up with her. Past Eda is clearly upset but she doesn't wants Raine to know that, she also ask them to leave because she's heartbroken and slowly turning into a beast, Raine offers to help but Past Eda refuses. Present Eda tells Past Eda to just tell it to them 'cuz they can help but she still refuses and proceed to turn into the Owl Beast.

She gives once again the fault to the Owl Beast, if she was never curse she wouldn't have injured him, if she was never curse Raine would have probably still have broken up with her but at least Eda could have told them that she was heartbroken. If she was never cursed she still would have all of her magic by now and have a better life. And that's what gave me the motivation to continue with this post (I was so close to delete this). If Lilith never cursed Eda out of jealousy, Eda would have never runaway from home and found the portal to the human realm. She would probably still be a covenless witch but I don't think that she would have found King, if she was never cursed. If she didn't found the portal she couldn't send Owlbert to the human realm and attract Luz here in The Boiling Isles and without Luz her life would be different and probably lonely. It's because of the curse that she ran away and found the portal, without the portal Luz would have never came here in the first place and Eda said it herself in S2E1: “My life is pretty great because I'm friends with Luz the human”

I still get why she's upset and think the curse ruined her life but it actually lowkey made it better, there are some ups and downs but her life isn't even close to being ruined.

Speaking of ups

Can we talk about how beautiful miss gurl is, just look at her, she is HOT and I love her new form. She learned to have sympathy for The Owl Beast and understand how it had it bad and it gifted her with this beautiful look. Her design is awesome and I hope Lilith has the same makeover.

Let me explain, IPKKND was supposed to have a longer office track (that wasn't common though, I would've loved it) but the TRP was low, so Shantivan track was introduced. Then, I read that, Sana Maqbul (Lavanya) wanted to quit IPKKND, that's why the quick breakup???

Is that why they didn't give us the COMMON AF *jealousy and hero's ex GF turns villain* track? I am going to over answer this with a lot of detail because I have a lot of thoughts, as always! Time to get into my thinking cape/coat:

This analysis is going to cover:

(1) every example you just mentioned,

(2) my thoughts on external things affecting plot of the story,

(3) things/plots/ tracks that could've been if not for external factors

Examples

1) IPKKND was supposed to have a longer office track (that wasn't common though, I would've loved it) but the TRP was low, so Shantivan track was introduced

As far as I can remember from one of the writers' interviews, the office track was cut short because this was a show on Star Plus - which, as a channel, caters to 'family audience' therefore needs to have sanskaar and stuff at its core. Hence the rude shortening of the office track and weird 'makeover' and 'desi-dying' Lavanya. And hence we had a very weird four months of an eighteen-twenty years old Khushi teaching someone about sanskaars and suddenly knowing everything about a household when Bua-ji or even Payal would've been a more apt choice for this 'tutoring'.

If this was a Star One show, they might've not shifted out of the office for the longest time!

2) Sana Maqbul (Lavanya) wanted to quit IPKKND, that's why the quick breakup??? Is that why they didn't give us the COMMON AF *jealousy and hero's ex GF turns villain* track?

I did not know that's why the quick end happened. Honestly that happened perfectly. I think Lavanya had an inkling about their relationship heading south right when Arnav told everyone he's getting engaged to her. But she chooses to not see it until one day she couldn't. Maybe we could've gotten more from La but if you see carefully, La clearly knows that this relationship is now just for face. Bless her heart for trying though, trying with a smile!

Also, again I think the writers never thought of making Lavanya a vamp. They had enough material with Arnav-Khushi's own differences, Shyam and Buaji playing enough roles to mess up Arnav-Khushi's love story. I probably think they always had planned Lavanya as a beautiful person who was unintentionally caught in all of this. I feel they planned La and Khushi's friendship - they clearly enjoyed writing two completely different people becoming closest of friends.

The writers/creators deserve full credit for this.

3) Then again, Anjali was jealous and sad about Khushi after the first reveal of Shyam, and it looked like track about Didi Ki Saut was beginning. But again ratings dropped and the fandom didn't react well (kinda protested), Anjali quickly stopped showing jealousy and Dadi was introduced to give ArShi a common saas-bahu vibe.

This is all true.

My Thoughts on External Things Affecting Plot

It's not necessarily bad that external things affect plot. Feedback, from channel or fans, can help the show to pivot and understand what is working and what's not. The problem is when feedback is implemented regardless whether or not it matches the theme of the plot.

I loved:

1) The channel moving out of the office because the power dynamic was too great and the contract terms were very unhealthy and Arnav Singh Raizada deserved to get sued at least 10 times by the end of this contract so yes, the shorter the office track the better. Literally the saving grace is they didn't "fall in love" there.

2) The fans protesting against Didi Ki Saut track. Not because I hated the track - I think it was executed in the worst manner! From identical visual languages to show Arnav-Anjali and Arnav-Khushi scenes (which didn't work to show Arnav being equally torn between the two most important women in his life, but just made the audience get creeped by Arnav-Anjali's relationship) and writing scenes of Anjali getting offended by Arnav-Khushi's intimacy/Arnav spending time with his wife, on her birthday, in his bedroom... did she expect Khushi would just *disappear* in a her and Arnav's bedroom? Like that was the worst way to show a compelling plot line and giving people some weird thoughts about Anjali-Arnav (which I hate because I LOVE Anjali-Arnav).

3) Barun walking out when the plot was literally done. Yes, thank you!

4) Barun going to do a movie led to the kidnapping track, which I liked a lot. No, not the nonsense of Manorama Bond fishing out Delhi's security camera footages in vintage recording system - but the fact that given the chasm and angst between Arnav & Khushi, only something bigger than their misunderstanding could force Arnav to give weight to his feelings and for Khushi to be able to forgive him. And his life was at stake. It was a sharp reminder to both of them that they lost so much by not communicating that it doesn't matter what they had to say - they loved each other, they just needed to get back and fight off everything together.

And then again, there are things I HATED that happened because of external factors:

1) The channel for the whole La becomes Desi. And the overdose of sanskaar and tradition that followed for a few months *uggggh* Clearly the channel demanded this from the plot because family, traditions and all are important to Star Plus (wtf are they thinking for Ghum Hai Kisi Ke? though or YRKKH?) And even the Aarav track and Mrs. India - two tracks with terrible execution - were very Star Plus recommended content. Just now Saath Nibhana Saathiya 2 had a Mrs. Surat/Gujarat track and Yeh Hai Chaahatein had a miracle child popping up...

2) The fans demanding Arnav & Khushi's proximity. The whole hut scene was *noooooo*. Lack of consent, body doubles, GLARING logical loopholes and them just trying to do it when one of them is really not in the mood and they were both so out of character. @phati-sari explains this really well in her post (just search for the hut to get all relevant posts on her blog)

3) Barun? Not exactly - he's never in control of the plot so really it's the writers that kinda know what to do with his presence and absence. Even if they get a short time, it's upto the creators who know if they use the last 2-3 weeks for stretching a random track as much as they can and give a rushed ending or quickly wrap up a crap track and give a satisfactory ending. A good example of this is Lavanya's exit - although rushed was dealt with grace, important conversations and memorable hugs. Bad one is the end of the show - I know Barun gave his papers but I wish they went the La way with the end of the show - important convos, teary hugs and a sweet moment (they tried their best tho...)

It's an ITV trend though to not plan for the end of a show... they stretch a crappy track as much as they can and have like a 2 min epilogue. Kasautii 2.0 was the funniest cause they had all misconceptions cleared, Komolika and Mr. Bajaj die and then have a weird 2 min pillow fight to show 'happy family'... guess in that way I'm glad we had whatever we did with IPKKND!

Possible Tracks Then

So if external factors didn't influence the show, we might have had the following:

1) A longer office track. It would end the way it did in canon though. I think it was prewritten that at one point Khushi would tear up the contract and hold him accountable for everything Arnav did. Just instead of 3-4 days it would've been 10-15 days after the contract.

2) Didi Ki Saut track. Honestly that was compelling if executed right. Sometimes you can have an antagonist without becoming a villain, Anjali the perfect character for that.

3) A separation track. I'm pretty sure Arnav-Khushi could have separated at some point in their six months marriage - this is just my inkling and not something I heard in an interview unlike the above two. If given full reign to writing, we probably would've gotten an angst heavy stuff at some point post marriage/6 months.

4) A remarriage track sans Dadi. We know why Dadi was introduced (honestly I didn't mind her, it was a track done well and kinda to redeem Arnav in front of the public eyes. It's a perfect track cause Arnav is 'nice' for standing up for her and kinda heals the wounds he caused in the first few months of the marriage by retorting someone who tells Khushi everything he told her...) But anyway I do think a remarriage was in the works, not because of TRPs but the way their whole 'marriage' was framed and how Khushi was broken because of the lack of everything in it. And they deserved one w/o the devastation that night brought.

5) The 'marriage' would've been a live in. Arnav and Khushi's elopement was supposed to be darker in nature*. Their 'marriage' would've had no religious nor legal validity, therefore a stark contradiction to everything Khushi stood for... but you can't have that in ITV. *By dark I don't mean sexual violence - never.*

6) The whole IPKKND was meant to be darker. I am glad for the romantic comedy though! I think their balance of angst and comedy pre marriage was perfect! Not sure post marriage because it felt like a loop of going back to square one with no progress. But I think things were meant to be less subtle, more tragic and dramatized. So I think we could've gotten extremely angsty periods post marriage with a slow, gentle lull to the romance/comedy. While I am extremely glad for the lightheartedness, I wish I could've read what the whole original concept for Arnav/Khushi was!

7) Arnav revealing the truth to Khushi would've been different. We know the distasteful suicide track quickly came as a way to push Arnav's buttons and have him confess the truth of his elopement to Khushi. And that came from Barun going away - hence the quick kidnapping track and everything. So if Barun didn't go away, I honestly don't know how the revelation would happen. Would Arnav start piecing things together from information and things about Shyam in Laxminagar? Would Arnav end up helping and hospitalizing Shashi who would tell him the truth? Would Arnav come across any hidden wedding card Buaji could've had printed for Shyam-Khushi or even Shyam's fake kundili? Given the Gupta house wasn't the place where Shyam covered his tracks... was this where Arnav would start seeing things? Or guilt ridden, would Garima/Khushi/Madhumati tell Arnav the truth? Something was meant to happen for this revelation, whether it's Arnav believing Khushi or just getting further evidence against her - I... don't know! I wish I knew what the writers had in store.

We highly appreciate for not showing a typical Nanand against Bhaabi trope, also for not making La villain, but would it result differently if things didn't have a hand? Imma cry thinking Anjali jealous and La villain! meh!  What a feast for the eyes it was to see ONLY ONE VILLAIN and less negativity in a tellywood show. Baas bohut hua my casual verbiage. You get better as the weeks pass. You’ve returned to work and Jimin is happy to see you doing well. Hoseok still tries to contact you, but you ignore him every time. You’ve avoided outings where you knew he’d be present. Sure, it sucks that your friendship is now ruined, but you’re finally valuing your own worth and happiness. He never deserved your time or feelings.

You decided to make a change with yourself, starting with your hair. Jimin was getting his hair toned one day, so you decided to accompany him and chop off your long locks. You’re now sporting a bob that ends right beneath your chin. You even bleached the bottom half of your hair, making you look less sweet.

Jungkook is coming over for your weekly movie night. He hasn’t seen your hair yet, so when he walks in with a grocery bag of snacks, he’s stopped in his tracks at the sight of you.

“Y-you changed your hair!”

“I did,” you smirked.

He stays planted by the entrance of your living room, eyes wide and mouth agape.

“What? Does it look bad or something?” you question, nervously pulling back strands of your hair behind your ears, flashing the platinum blonde layers.

“N-no! I-It looks great! You look great,” he stutters, rubbing the back of his neck as he finally steps into your living room. He places the bag onto your coffee table and sits down on the couch next to you. You lean forward when you spot your favorite bag of chips, grabbing it.

“So what kind of movie are you in the mood for tonight?” you ask him as you scroll through the options. “Christmas movies?” when he doesn’t answer, you glance at him from your peripheral and see that he’s still staring at your hair.

“You okay, Jungkookie?” you ask, turning to face him.

He blinks a couple times before shaking his head. “Yeah, sorry… it’s just… you’ve always had your hair long… this is different…” he answers, cheeks turning a deep rose color.

“Different in a good way?”

“Yeah, of course!”

“Thanks, Jungkookie,” you chuckle. “So, what should we watch tonight?”

“Oh, uh… how about we binge the Harry Potter stories? You’re giving me Narcissa Malfoy vibes,” he shyly grins.

“All of the movies?” you quirk your eyebrow at him.

“Why not?” he shrugs.

“But it’s already 7:00 at night… It’s a 20 hour marathon…”

“And?”

“It’s thursday…”

“And?”

“We still have to work tomorrow…”

“So, we’ll play hookie,” he shrugs. You scoff and punch him in the arm. “Ow! Okay! Okay! We can watch something else… You’ve got a strong arm, Y/N!” He winces as he massages the area you just hit.

You smile triumphantly as you stuff a couple of chips into your mouth. You scroll through and land on a Netflix Christmas special.

Half way through the movie, you position yourself facing Jungkook.

“So, I’d like to start working out,” you state.

“Oh? Does this have something to do with your “post-breakup” makeover, or something?” He teases.

You roll your eyes and shove him by the shoulder. “No! I just… haven’t been taking care of my health, and I want to change that.”

Jungkook nods at your words.

“I don’t know where to start… and I know you work out all the time...” you nervously ramble. Jungkook just stares at you, waiting for you to finish your thought. “Could you, maybe, wanna be my workout partner? You know, help me out with my form and find what exercises suit me best?” you propose.

Jungkook brings his hand up to his chin, furrowing his eyebrows as he thinks it over. “Sure. I can help you out,” he finally answers with a nod of his head.

“Oh, thank you, Jungkookie!” You squeal as you jump and capture him in a hug. “You’re the bestest friend, you know that?”

“Ha, yeah… It’s no problem, Y/N,” he rubs the back of his neck, eyes casted down on his lap.

When the movie ends, you stand up and stretch your limbs with a yawn.

Jungkook moves to stand up as well.

“So I’ll see you tomorrow after work?” he asks you.

“For what?” you question back in confusion.

“To workout?”

“Oh! Yeah! Right! Already?”

“Yeah, why not?” He chuckles at you.

“Okay,” you huff.

The next day, you meet Jungkook at his gym. He had texted you the address earlier in the day and you made your way over there as soon as you left work. Jungkook gave you his free guest pass to use and showed you to the women’s locker room. You quickly changed into a pair of mint green athletic leggings and matching sports bra and tank top you had purchased over your lunch break. You change from your heels into your black Nike runners, and throw your hair up into a messy bun.

When you emerge from the locker room you accidentally bump into Jungkook.

“Oh, sorry-” Your jaw drops when you take in the sight of him. His long locks are tied up into a ponytail, putting his undercut on full display. Short strands of baby hair that didn’t reach his hair tie fall over his forehead, framing his face. He has on a cut off white tee, exposing his muscular arms and tattooed sleeve, and a pair of plain grey sweatpants. You couldn’t help but stare. You knew the boy was ripped with how he never misses a day at the gym, but you would have never guessed he looked this good.

“Like what you see?” Jungkook quirks an eyebrow at you teasingly.

You finally break your eyes from him, trying your best to hide the flush on your cheeks, but Jungkook notices and lowly chuckles to himself.

“C’mon, let’s start with stretching,” he says as he gently tugs on your arm, guiding you to an area of foam mats.

Jungkook guides you through the stretches, making sure you’re properly warming up your muscles. He isn’t shy with the way his hands naturally grab your hips or press on your back to help position you correctly. You’d be lying if you said your heart rate didn’t accelerate whenever you felt the heat of his hands on you, but you’re also quick to push the unfamiliar feeling away. You and Jungkook have cuddled many times before and you’ve never felt this little spark in your chest, so why is this any different? Maybe it was because you haven’t been intimately touched by a man in a while, you sum up.

After stretching and a few warm up exercises, he has you do cardio on the treadmill until you’re out of breath with sweat dripping from your face. He hands you his water bottle and you chug all of its contents, making him laugh a little. Next, he moves you to the weight machines and has you do a couple of reps at each machine, working every inch of your body. Once you’ve finished, he makes sure to help you stretch out the muscles you’ve utilized. As you’re stretching, you catch sight of a petite woman, occupying one of the punching bags. The way she punches and kicks the bag with such vigor and force amazes you. Who would have thought someone so small had that much power in them?

“Would you like to try that?” Jungkook asks, breaking you from your reverie.

“You box, too?” you question.

“It’s part of my workout routine,” he confirms, shrugging.

“Could you teach me?”

“Of course,” he gently grins.

You take the moment to admire his features that are usually covered by his hair, like his cheek bones and his strong brows. You don’t notice that Jungkook was staring at you, too until he looks away, cheeks a tint darker than normal. He stands up and lends you a hand, helping you to your feet as well.

“Did you wanna shower in the locker room, or did you want to wait until you get home?” he asks.

“I didn’t bring any spare clothes besides these and my work clothes,” you inform him.

“That’s fine. I was just going to see if you wanted to grab some food before we head home. I didn’t know if you wanted to shower first.”

“We can do that. I’m actually starving, now that I think about it,” you sheepishly chuckle.

“Alright, grab your belongings and meet me by the door. I know a place down the street with the best ramen,” he grins.

When you exit the locker room, Jungkook is already waiting by the front doors, duffle bag slung over one shoulder. His hair is still tied up, but he’s covered his arms with a grey sweater matching his pants. He’s concentrating on something on his phone, eyebrows pulled together when you walk up to him.

“Hey,” you say.

“Hey, ready to go?”

You nod your head in confirmation and the two of you head out of the gym.

When you enter the noodle shop, you notice that it’s quite small but the ambience is very cozy and comfortable. There are only four square top tables in the dining area and three of them are currently occupied, so Jungkook pulls you towards the only open table, pulling out a chair motioning you to sit down.

“Sit here, I’ll go and order,” he tells you.

As he walks away, you pull out your phone. You have three new messages from Hoseok. You sigh with a roll of your eyes as you place your phone back into your purse. Jungkook returns with two bottles of soju, two shot glasses, and two water bottles.

“Soju?” you question, cocking your eyebrow at him.

“Yeah, why not? It is Friday night,” he shrugs, flashing his adorable bunny smile.

You just smile and shake your head in return. He grabs one of the green bottles and pours a shot for both of you. You bow your head in thanks as you accept the shot, holding it up and he follows suit.

“To new beginnings,” you say.

“To new beginnings.”

As you set down the empty glass, a petite, old lady comes by, setting down a bowl of kimchi and a plate of grilled pork belly on the table. She then places a bowl of ramen in front of you.

“Oh, thank you,” you say with a bow of your head.

She gives you a warm smile before placing another bowl in front of Jungkook.

“Jungkook-ssi, you didn’t tell me you had a girlfriend! Aigooo… She’s beautiful!” the old lady comments as she looks between the two of you.

Your eyes widen and a blush paints over your features as you look at Jungkook. His features mirror yours as he starts to correct her, “oh, uh, actu-”

“My goodness, where are my manners! I’ll let you two enjoy your meal in peace, and don’t worry about paying, this meal is on the house,” she states with a wave of her hand as she walks away, but not before shooting Jungkook a wink which has him shrinking in his seat from embarrassment.

“I’m so sorry,” Jungkook is quick to apologize.

“It’s fine, Jungkookie,” you giggle at his state.

You go to take the first bite of your ramen and your eyes immediately bulge out of your sockets. “Oh my god, this is so good!” you exclaim with a mouthful of noodles.

Jungkook laughs at your reaction. “I know, right? Here, try it with some kimchi,” he states as he places a few pieces of kimchi into your bowl. You dig in as he watches you. You hum in satisfaction at the flavors and Jungkook grins.

After you’ve both finished your ramen, the old lady returns to collect the empty bowls.

“How was it?” she asks.

“Oh, it was delicious! Thank you, ma’am!,” you answer with a bright smile.

“Oh, I’m glad you enjoyed it! And please, call me auntie,” she smiles back.

You bow back in appreciation and she walks away. Jungkook begins to fill the shot glasses with soju and hands you one.

“How about we play a game?” Jungkook proposes.

“Hmm… what about truth or dare?” you challenge.

“Bet.”

“Okay, I’ll start, since I’m older,” you excitedly say. “Truth or Dare?”

“Dare.”

“Hmm… “ You start looking around the shop and spot a table of young girls. “I dare you to try and get one of those girls’ numbers.”

“Which one?”

You look back at the table and pick the one that isn’t too engaged in the conversation, just sitting quietly, smiling at whatever her friends are saying. You watch as Jungkook gets up and makes his way towards the table. The girls immediately stop talking and stare wide-eyed at the gorgeous man walking towards them. Jungkook casually places a hand on their table and leans closer to the girl you picked out. You watch as he flashes his dazzling smirk of his, making the girl blush profusely. She locks eyes with you nervously, making you quickly turn around. Jungkook returns to your table shortly after, plopping down onto his chair.

“So? Did you get it?”

Jungkook shakes his head. “No. She told me she doesn’t think my girlfriend would appreciate me flirting with her and sent me back,” he rolls his eyes playfully, a grin playing on his lips.

“Did you tell her we aren’t together?”

“I tried but she shut me down,” he shrugs.

“Lame. Since you failed at the challenge, you have to drink.”

“What? But I did the dare!” Jungkook exclaims in disbelief.

“Yeah but you didn’t successfully get her number.”

“Fine…” he picks up the shooter and downs the alcohol.

“Alright, your turn.”

“Truth or dare, Y/N?”

“Dare.”

Jungkook scans the room before setting his eyes on a jukebox tucked into the corner of the noodle shop.

“I dare you to go and pick a song from that jukebox over there and start dancing by yourself.”

“What??”

“You heard me.”

“Ugh… alright.”

Jungkook hands you a quarter and you make your way to the jukebox. It’s mostly filled with trot songs, so you select the only one you’re familiar with, which just so happens to be “the Twist”. As the music begins to play, you start to twist your hips and try your best to get lost in the song, making a fool of yourself. Jungkook covers his mouth as he tries to conceal his laughter. Once the song is over, a group of drunk guys sitting at the table closest to the jukebox start clapping and whistling at your performance. You smile and dramatically bow in front of them. You saunter back to your table and smirk at Jungkook.

“Drink up, Jungkookie.” Jungkook just rolls his eyes and slams the shot.

You and Jungkook continue with your game until the second bottle of soju is empty, filling up the last shots of the night.

“Okay, Kookie, truth or dare?”

“Truth.”

“Hmmm… How come in the two years I’ve known you, you haven’t had a single girlfriend?”

Taken aback by your question, Jungkook takes a moment to answer. He can’t tell you it’s because you’re the only one he wants to be with, not yet at least. So he shrugs and says, “I don’t know.”

“Oh c’mon… You bring home girls to sleep with every week. You’re telling me none of them seemed good enough to date?” you ask in disbelief.

“Why does it matter, Y/N?” he cocks an eyebrow at you.

“I just find it ridiculous that someone as hot as you hasn’t dated anyone in two years!” you exclaim before slapping your hand over your mouth after hearing what you just confessed.

“You think I’m hot?” Jungkook questions, a teasing smirk playing on his lips.

You sigh in defeat. “I mean I’d be blind if I didn’t notice how good looking you are, Jungkook,” you answer with a roll of your eyes. Jungkook just shakes his head chuckling at your response.

“Truth or dare, Y/N?”

“....Dare. No! Truth.”

“You sure?”

“Y-yes,” you nervously reply.

Jungkook smirks at you before asking, “Have you ever wanted to sleep with me?”

Heat rushes to your cheeks. “I-I…” you pause a moment trying to figure out how to properly answer before quickly grab your shot glass and downing the sweet liquid. Jungkook bursts into laughter at your refusal to answer.

“That’s not fair,” he fake whines, leaning back in his chair crossing his arms dramatically over his chest as a pout sets on his lips.

You smile and shrug at him.

He shakes his head and smiles back.

“Another round?” he asks.

“I think that’s enough for tonight,” you chuckle.

“Fair enough. I’ll walk you home.”

You nod your head in response and begin to stand. As the two of you walk towards the door, the auntie waves you guys goodbye.

“Come back soon, kids!” She shouts.

“We will! Thank you, Auntie!” the two of you answer in unison, making her smile.

When you step outside, you shiver a little as the cold wind seeps through your thin jacket.

“Are you cold?”

“I-I’ll be fine,” you answer through clattering teeth.

Jungkook doesn’t listen and digs through his duffle bag for a large hoodie. “Here.”

“No, I’m okay, Jungkook, really.”

“Just wear it, please? You’ll be even colder later on,” Jungkook insists.

Taking the sweater, you begin to pull it over your head. Jungkook looks down and notices that your shoelaces are untied so he crouches down and ties them for you.

“Oh, you didn’t need to-”

“Too, late,” Jungkook interrupts you as he stands up again. “Let’s go?”

You couldn’t find any words so you just nod your head and follow him down the street.

The walk to your apartment isn’t too long. You’re almost there when you think of the brilliant idea of racing the rest of the way. You look at Jungkook with a devilish grin.

“Last one to my apartment has to pay for food and drinks tomorrow,” you challenge. Jungkook barely had enough time to register what you had just said before you’re already sprinting ahead of him.

“Hey! That’s not fair! I wasn't ready!” he shouts after you.

“Too bad!” You yell back, turning around into a backwards jog.

“Y/N! Watch out!”

You furrow your brow and turn around, noticing too late that you’ve just run into traffic. You stare at a pair of headlights coming towards you, the sound of a car horn blaring but it sounds far away. Next thing you knew, Jungkook has slammed into your body pulling you out of traffic. He has you tightly embraced against his chest on the other side of the street. You can feel his heart beating fast against his ribcage. Still stunned you look up at him and he’s glaring at you.

“What were you thinking?!” He scolds you.

You don’t realize you’ve been staring at your joined hand until Jungkook looks back at you and asks, “Are you coming?”

You break your gaze from your limbs and meet his eyes, cheeks heating up. “I-uh, yeah, sorry,” you reply as you start to walk a little faster to meet his pace.

The two of you walk the rest of the way to your apartment, hand in hand. When you reach the steps to your apartment complex, you turn to face Jungkook.

“Thank you, Jungkook… for everything…”

“Ah, no worries. I’m just glad you didn’t get hurt,” he replies, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand.

“Well… I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yeah, see you tomorrow.” He stands there just looking at you like he’s waiting for something.

Your eyes travel to your joined hands. “Uh… Jungkook?”

“Yeah?” there’s a glint in his eyes for a quick moment before they glance at his hand still wrapped around yours. He quickly lets go of your hand like it burned him, stuffing both of his hands into the pocket of his sweater. “Ah, sorry…”

You just smile at him. “It’s okay,” you say, turning towards your door. “See you.”

“See you,” he says as he starts to walk away from you.

Jungkook flexes his hand, still feeling the warmth of yours in his. His heart beats rapidly in his chest, remembering how well your hand fit inside of his and how soft it felt against his rough one. On the way to his apartment he thinks about when he’ll be able to hold your hand again.

When you enter your apartment, you kick off your shoes and are immediately reminded of the way Jungkook tied your laces for you. You feel your heart stutter a bit at the memory and shake your head, trying to get rid of this fuzzy feeling blooming in your chest. You head straight to your bathroom for a cool shower, letting it wash off the dried sweat on your body and the heat still lingering beneath your skin from all of the contact from Jungkook. After your shower, you throw on an old oversized t-shirt and lay down on your bed. Your mind goes back to Jungkook’s hands. The way they brushed against your body while you exercised, the way he would grab your waist to help center you, and lastly, the way they felt in yours. You also thought about the way his muscular arms felt engulfing you when he saved you from getting hit by that car. You couldn’t register it at the moment, but you felt safe in them. For Women's History Month 2021, GRAMMY.com is celebrating some of the women artists nominated at the 2021 GRAMMY Awards show. Today, we honor Taylor Swift, who's currently nominated for six GRAMMYs.

When we met Taylor Swift in 2006, it was immediately apparent that her songwriting approach was like ripping a page out of her diary.

"Just a boy in a Chevy truck/ That had a tendency of gettin' stuck/ On backroads at night/ And I was right there beside him all summer long/ And then the time we woke up to find that summer gone," she lamented in the first verse of her debut single, "Tim McGraw(opens in a new tab)." The way the then-16-year-old Swift could turn personal anecdotes into instantly memorable hooks mirrored the prowess of an industry veteran, appealing to more than just the teenage girls that could relate to a short-lived high school romance.

Now, nearly 15 years later, Swift has introduced another layer of intrigue with a foray into indie folk, unveiling a pair of albums, folklore and evermore, last year. Recorded entirely in isolation after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, folklore has been widely acclaimed(opens in a new tab) as Swift's best album, touted for its intimate songwriting and cinematic dynamics; evermore has received similarly glowing reviews(opens in a new tab).

folklore was 2020's best-selling album(opens in a new tab) and earned Swift five GRAMMY nominations at the 2021 GRAMMY Awards show, including her fourth Album Of The Year nod. (evermore will be eligible for the 64th GRAMMY Awards in 2022.) As her 10 previous GRAMMY wins suggest, though, this new chapter isn't an abrupt departure for the star—it's a masterful continuation of her evolution as a singer/songwriter.

If there's one thing that Swift has proven throughout her career, it's that she refuses to be put in a box. Her ever-evolving sound took her from country darling to pop phenom to folk's newest raconteur—a transition that, on paper, seems arduous. But for Swift, it was seamless and resulted in perhaps her most defining work yet. And folklore’s radiance relies on three of Swift’s songwriting tools: heartfelt balladeering, autobiographical writing, and character-driven storytelling.

While there was always a crossover element to Swift's pop-leaning country tunes, her transition from country starlet to pop queen began with Red. The album’s lead single, the feisty breakup anthem "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together(opens in a new tab)," was Swift's first release to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and, ironically, scoffed "indie records much cooler than mine"). She declared a full pop makeover with 2014's 1989, but the response proved that her bold move was the right one: Along with spawning three more No. 1 hits, the project won Swift her second GRAMMY for Album of the Year.

From there, 2017’s Reputation, a response to media scrutiny, and 2019’s Lover, an often bubbly exploration of all facets of affection, followed. Although they shared similarly grandiose production, Lover featured a handful of poetic ballads, including "The Archer(opens in a new tab)," a self-reflective love song that teased Swift's folk sensibilities through storybook lyrics and ambient textures.

Swift’s ballads are key in understanding the full essence of folklore. They’ve regularly marked standout moments on each of her albums, both thanks to her poignant vulnerability and rich tone. Fearless standout "White Horse" earned Swift two GRAMMYs in 2009; Red's painstaking "All Too Well" was an instant fan favorite; 1989's "This Love" and Reputation's "New Years Day" provided tenderness amid otherwise synth-heavy sounds.

The raw emotion she puts into her downtempo songs comes alive on folklore, introducing a new wave of neo-classical sonics that elevate her fanciful penmanship to an ethereal level. Whether or not Swifties saw a full indie-pop record coming—at least not yet—the shift isn't all that surprising. Folklore’s romanticized lyrics and relatively lo-fi production are arguably what many fans have been patiently waiting on.

Lyrically, the super-personal nature of Swift’s music has always captivated fans and naysayers alike; diehards and critics dissected each of her albums for its real-life subjects and hidden meanings. While she played into those conspiracies at the time—whether she was revealing names in titles like "Hey Stephen(opens in a new tab)" and "Dear John(opens in a new tab)" or scathing the other girl on "Better Than Revenge(opens in a new tab)"—even Swift herself admits that her teenage method had an expiration date.

"There was a point that I got to as a writer who only wrote very diaristic songs that [it] felt unsustainable for my future moving forward," she told Apple Music's(opens in a new tab) Zane Lowe in December of 2020. "It felt like too hot of a microscope ... On my bad days, I would feel like I was loading a cannon of clickbait when that's not what I want for my life."

That realization is what helped make folklore so memorable: Swift stripped away the drama to let her artful storytelling shine. Sure, there are occasional callbacks to personal happenings ("invisible string(opens in a new tab)" references sending her exes baby gifts and "mad woman(opens in a new tab)" alludes to her legal battle with Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun). Still, she largely shies away from her autobiographical narratives to make way for her imagination.

"I found myself not only writing my own stories, but also writing about or from the perspective of people I've never met, people I've known, or those I wish I hadn't," Swift wrote in a letter to fans(opens in a new tab) on social media the day folklore arrived. "The lines between fantasy and reality blur and the boundaries between truth and fiction become almost indiscernible."

folklore might be her first full project dedicated to creating characters and projecting storylines, but Swift has shown a knack for fantasy from the start. Tracks like "Mary's Song (Oh My My)(opens in a new tab)" on her self-titled debut and "Starlight(opens in a new tab)" on Red saw Swift craft stories for real-life muses ("Mary's Song" was inspired by an old couple who lived next door to Swift in her childhood; "Starlight" was sparked from seeing a picture of Ethel and Bobby Kennedy as teens). Even when songs did pertain to her real life, Swift often had a way of flipping memories into whimsical metaphors, like the clever clap-back to a critic on Speak Now's "Mean(opens in a new tab)" or the rebound relationship in Reputation's "Getaway Car(opens in a new tab)."

To think that we wouldn't have folklore without a pandemic is almost surreal; it's already become such a fundamental piece of Swift’s artistic puzzle. There was no telling what may have come after the glittering "love letter to love itself” that was Lover, but it seems isolation made the singer rethink any plans she may have had.

"I just thought there are no rules anymore because I used to put all these parameters on myself, like, 'How will this song sound in a stadium? How will this song sound on radio?' If you take away all the parameters, what do you make?" she told Paul McCartney in a November (opens in a new tab)Rolling Stone(opens in a new tab) interview(opens in a new tab). "And I guess the answer is folklore."

Even if she hasn’t been making indie music herself, Swift has shown an affinity for the genre over the years through curated digital playlists(opens in a new tab). Those included four songs by The National including "Dark Side of the Gym," which she references on folklore single "betty(opens in a new tab)," and "8 (Circle)" by Bon Iver, Swift's collaborator on folklore's gut-wrenching "exile(opens in a new tab)" as well as evermore’s title track. (“Exile” is one of folklore’s GRAMMY-nominated cuts, up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.)

The National’s guitarist Aaron Dessner co-wrote nine and produced 11 of folklore's 16 tracks, soundtracking Swift's imaginative tales with sweeping orchestration and delicate piano. Their partnership started with "cardigan(opens in a new tab)," a melancholy take on teenage love(opens in a new tab) that's up for Best Pop Solo Performance and the coveted Song of the Year. The team-up was a dream come true for Swift, a self-proclaimed National superfan and a career highlight for Dessner, who shared in an Instagram post(opens in a new tab) about folklore that he's "rarely been so inspired by someone." He sees the album as a pivotal moment for both Swift's career and pop music.

"Taylor has opened the door for artists to not feel pressure to have 'the bop,'" Dessner shared with (opens in a new tab)Billboard(opens in a new tab) in September. "To make the record that she made, while running against what is programmed in radio at the highest levels of pop music—she has kind of made an anti-pop record. And to have it be one of the most, if not the most, successful commercial releases of the year that throws the playbook out.

"I hope it gives other artists, especially lesser-known or more independent artists, a chance at the mainstream," he continued. "Maybe radio will realize that music doesn't have to sound as pushed as it has. Nobody was trying to design anything to be a hit. Obviously, Taylor has the privilege of already having a very large and dedicated audience, but I do feel like it's having a resonance beyond that."

Swift's other primary folklore collaborator was Jack Antonoff. He has been her right-hand man since they first paired up on 2013's promotional single "Sweeter Than Fiction(opens in a new tab)" (Swift referred to him as "musical family" in her folklore announcement(opens in a new tab)). Even after years of creating stadium-ready pop smashes, Antonoff said in his own folklore Instagram post(opens in a new tab), "I've never heard Taylor sing better in my life / write better."

As Swift recognizes herself, folklore ushered in a new way of thinking for the superstar that not only brings out her best, but sets a promising precedent for what's to come. "What I felt after we put out folklore was, 'Oh wow, people are into this too, this thing that feels really good for my life and my creativity,'" Swift added in her interview with Lowe. "I saw a lane for my future that was a real breakthrough moment of excitement and happiness."

Her enthusiasm is tangible on both folklore and evermore. Dubbed folklore’s sister record, evermore further expands Swift’s newfound mystical atmosphere. Much to the delight of many Swifties, the follow-up also calls back to her country beginnings on tracks like the HAIM-assisted “no body, no crime(opens in a new tab),” as well as her pop expertise on more uptempo cuts like “long story short(opens in a new tab).”

Together, the albums are a momentous reminder that Swift is a singer/songwriter first. Her wordcraft is some of the most alluring of her generation, and that’s never been lost on her music, regardless of the genre she’s exploring. But now that Swift also feels she's at her best, it’s evident folklore was just the beginning of Taylor Swift in her finest form.

Hyperfixation on building/inventing things: Even more specifically amusement park rides ("Rollercoaster", "Rollercoaster The Musical", "One Good Scare", "Leave The Busting To Us", "Don't Even Blink", "Cheer Up Candace", "Delivery Of Destiny", etc.) Now, you can argue that he's a kid, and rides are fun, so of course he likes them, but if you look at it from a building standpoint, from an engineering standpoint? Phineas' interest lies in fun, of course, but he also must have an extreme interest in the engineering aspect of a ride in order to be skilled and knowledgeable enough to build them, and to be able to focus on the task so wholly.

He also gets incredibly attached to very specific things that some people often find strange, which seems like evidence of hyperfixation to me. (E.g.: aglets in "Tip of the Day", dental hygiene in "Bully Bust", Bulgarian folk dancing in "The Beak", detective movies in "Finding Mary McGuffin") hot tubs in "Bully Bromance Breakup", "Lotsa Latkes", "Swiss Family Phineas")

HYPERFOCUS: He and Ferb will dedicate their whole day to just one idea that they have. Phineas is able to weaponize his hyperfocusing talent incredibly well and stick to one task, but only if it is something he is extremely interested in — for example: In "Bully Bromance Breakup", he becomes almost unable to function without the stimulation of inventing, to the point where climbing a mountain with his friends—something he, by all accounts, should enjoy—becomes a difficult task for him.

He displays forgetfulness: In "Mom's Birthday", Phineas forgets it is his mom's birthday until he hears Candace mention it, and then he feels extremely guilty. We then see a montage of him, during various situations from the previous episodes (on the rollercoaster, etc.) telling Ferb: "We can't forget mom's birthday." Even though this was of course, a bit, if you take this as being canon (which there's no real reason not to), it means Phineas was constantly talking about their mom's birthday for weeks leading up to the event because he really didn't want to forget it and he was worried that he would (and in the end, he did), implying he may have a consistent tendency to be forgetful.

Phineas has an intense love of summer, and is implied to have a dislike for school—  which is natural for any kid his age, but it's not hard to imagine that he might feel cooped up and creatively stifled during school. Especially if we put his attitude towards school next to that of Baljeet, with whom he shares a love of learning and knowledge, it's hard to ignore the difference. Being as we've seen Phineas get agitated when he's not able to build and invent freely and on his own terms ("Bully Bromance Breakup", "Summer Belongs To You"), it's easy to imagine he may struggle in a public school environment.

He has impulsive and thrill-seeking tendencies, which are evident in many of the big ideas. ("Escape From Phineas Tower", "Rollercoaster", "Ain't No Kiddie Ride", "The Beak", "One Good Scare", "Phineas and Ferb-Busters", "Leave The Busting To Us", ETC.) Adrenaline-seeking behaviour is common in individuals with ADHD and goes hand-in-hand with a low tolerance for boredom which Phineas explicitly states himself to possess in the very first episode of the show. ("Rollercoaster")

However, on the flip side to his aversion to boredom, he can also spend literally hours just standing in the backyard, not even talking, if that's just what he feels like doing that day. ("Best Lazy Day Ever")

He is highly energetic and is the most talkative one of his friends. He has also suggested having an awareness and perhaps an insecurity that he talks too much in some situations. ("Misperceived Monotreme")

He sometimes has trouble with listening, and interrupts people, especially when he's excited: in "Ready For The Bettys", when they stumble upon Perry's lair, Phineas assumes Ferb built everything and doesn't listen, constantly interrupting when Ferb tries to protest; in "Hail Doofania", he assumes that he knows what Isabella is talking about (not having seen a rainbow before) and makes it his mission for the day to do what he thinks she means, and doesn't take the time to hear her out when she tries to explain otherwise because he's too invested in/excited about the project he has in mind.

Obliviousness / missing of social cues: The most obvious example is Isabella's crush on him, which he consistently fails to notice. ("Chronicles of Meap", "Meapless in Seattle", "That Sinking Feeling", "Happy New Year", "Summer Belongs To You", "Happy Birthday Isabella", "Doofapus", "It's No Picnic") He also seems not to understand that Candace wants to get them in trouble, nor that he actually probably would get in trouble if his mom knew what he and Ferb were doing. In fact, he gets excited about sharing their endeavors with Linda, clearly oblivious to the potential repercussions. ("Traffic Cam Caper", "What'd I Miss", "Suddenly Suzy")

Highlighted Episodic Evidence

Chronicles of Meap/Meapless in Seattle

Phineas's dismissal of Isabella's "cuteness" comments shows again his difficulty picking up on social cues, especially when distracted by a mission. He does not seem to understand, or at least does not acknowledge, Isabella's clear frustration with him. He does not understand that he is dismissing Isabella's feelings, because to him it feels obvious that she is cute and he doesn't think he needs to say it. Followed up in "Meapless in Seattle" with the "You think I'm cute?" "It's a scientific fact!" interaction—Phineas is not understanding that this isn't really how to give a compliment; he does not seem to realize that by not acknowledging Isabella's cuteness he could be hurting her feelings/nurturing her insecurities.

That Sinking Feeling

Once again, he misses cues from Isabella about her feelings for him, or if he understands them, he does not outwardly acknowledge them. He also tries to create romance for Mishti and Baljeet by taking "scientifically" romantic things, based upon his research (mostly the movie Titanic): candles, live music, the situation of a sinking ship... He over-does these things in a calculated way to try and curate the most scientifically romantic situation possible. This also mirrors Candace's opinion about his cold, calculated methods in "Perry Lays an Egg".

Cheer Up Candace

Phineas cares about Candace and when he sees her upset, he wants to help her, and he makes it his goal to do so. He hears the first step from Isabella's magazine is a makeover and he immediately thinks of a clown. He sets off to execute his plan without consulting anyone (except Ferb) and after it goes, as you can expect, not well, he realizes in hindsight that his impulsive idea was built on flawed logic. However, rather than dwell on this, he decides to dive right into the next step and he continues to do wildly over the top, fantastical versions of the magazine suggestions. I think this demonstrates a lack of understanding for social cues as well as impulsivity and impatience. Furthermore, he doesn't even wait to hear step two before setting out to achieve step one, and he doesn't ask Isabella her opinion or even listen to her suggestions once he has entered his own Idea Zone. Also, the Mix 'n' Mingle Machine is a great example of his unconventional and greatly efficiency-focused thought processes—  

he thinks of it as the most efficient way to meet as many people as possible in a short time, demonstrating a clear misunderstanding of what the actual intent of "meeting someone" was in the magazine. He is also basing this idea on his personal notions of what he finds fun, not what Candace would necessarily want.

Summer Belongs To You

When stranded on the island, Phineas shows an intense frustration when he's unable to put an optimistic spin on things. He also has a clear discomfort when he is without any tools to build with. Again, we see his hyperfocus on inventing (in this case: fixing the plane) get in the way of Isabella trying to have a romantic moment with him, and in the way of relaxing in general. She sees the sights of Paris, alone time with him, and chances to enjoy themselves, whereas Phineas sees things he could use as airplane parts, single-mindedly focused on his mission. And again he misses or does not acknowledge Isabella's frustration with him in the "It seemed like romance was a foregone conclusion" scene. This is strong evidence for Phineas' hyperfixation because he gets so caught up in his own world when it comes to inventing/building/working that he doesn't even notice what's going on around him, then he fails to see the irony of him identifying Candace&Jeremy and Ferb&Vanessa as romantic interests while entirely missing the fact that Isabella & him are also "a boy and a girl, alone in the city of love."

Also of note is his complete focus on completing the Summer Solstice goal. Because, despite the fact that they made it back to Danville safely after being in a pretty perilous situation—which should have become their main concern being as they were just stranded on an island with no food or way to call for help—he cannot be satisfied with that. Needing to get home before the sun sets for the sake of winning his bet and symbolically representing his worldview, he yells at candace when she doesn't want to get on the trike, because he's determined to still get there on time, intensely focused on both proving a point and upholding his personal values.

Happy Birthday Isabella

Isabella does not want an over-the-top surprise party, all she wants is to spend time alone with Phineas, but Phineas is so focused on his idea of her perfect birthday party that he does not seem to realize what her wishes are. He sends her away from him so that she won't know about the surprise, and does not even do so very gently (getting Buford to carry her away in a sack) instead of even asking her what she wants.

Bully Bromance Breakup

In this episode, Phineas is shown to get extremely distressed when he has to go even a short period of time without building/inventing anything. This is representative of a need for constant stimulation (which would explain why he is so adamant that he cannot put up with boredom). This also evidences his hyperfixation on building/inventing. The whole time that they're climbing the mountain with Baljeet, Phineas is completely preoccupied by his ideas for inventions, and after Baljeet rejects his ideas a few times, he gets increasingly agitated, eventually gets to a point where he is unable to climb anymore and has to get pulled up by the others, and he is shown rambling to himself about all of the invention ideas he has.

This is by no means a definitive list, and I'm sure there are many more moments in the show that provide evidence of these ideas, but this is the ones that stood out to me. He’s All That: Influencer Addison Rae Helms a Cast of Familiar Faces

For Gen-X viewers, He’s All That is a story we’ve seen before: Pygmalion or My Fair Lady, but updated with cultural references, settings, and technology that make the story of the lesson behind the plot—that the person you are is more important than the image you put forth—more connected to a modern audience. But digital natives who have grown up with as much with TikTok as with teen movie tropes will have a far richer experience, recognizing the cast not only as actors, but as the same influencers they’re playing. 

From director Mark Waters, this update, a gender-bent response to 1999’s iconic She’s All That, features a young influencer who, due to the live broadcast of a messy breakup with her budding rock-star boyfriend, loses her sponsorship (and is outed as the poor girl she truly is). The only way to get her sponsor back and save face is to prove she’s the makeover queen, able to make over any boy at their school the way she sculpted her ex’s image.

While the cast features a number of familiar faces and voices, this is not only Addison Rae’s film, it’s her first film. As her character Padgett Sawyer, the real-world TikTok celeb leads the familiar story through all the right beats, accompanied by pop-up chat windows and emojis that represent the presence of social media in the lives of all but Cameron Kweller (played by Tanner Buchanan), the object of Padgett’s make-over efforts.

Addison Rae as Padgett Sawyer

Although this is Rae’s first full-length feature, she is no stranger to the camera. She began her career as a dancer, who in 2019 launched a TikTok channel featuring her dance takes on popular songs. At only 20, the Louisiana celeb is worth over $5 million and has more than 83.4 million followers on TikTok (far more than her character in the film). Rae has her own merchandise line, but has also endorsed brands including Chantilly Boutique, Cheapskate, FashionNova, McCrary Jewelers, and Uptown. (It seems doubtful that she relies on any of them for corporate sponsorship, the way Padgett relies on sponsor Bunny Venom, given her per-video payout rate on TikTok and the reports of what she brings in monthly on YouTube.) 

Character Padgett is known for her makeover how-tos (some of which give bad advice, such as using toothpaste to reduce pimples), and in fact Rae’s very first YouTube video was showing how to do hair and makeup. Another is a Q&A with her 2020 flame, Bryce Hall. But more of her videos on both YouTube and TikTok feature music, and in addition to the requisite teen movie dance numbers featured in He’s All That, Rae does an excellent karaoke in the film with co-star Buchanan.

Bryce Hall‘s Cameo

Speaking of Bryce Hall, Rae’s fellow TikTok star (21 million followers) makes a cameo in the film. Hall’s career as an influencer began when he livestreaming on YouTube at age 15 in an effort to make friends after being bullied. The social media influencer moved from Maryland to Los Angeles and joined TalentX Entertainment’s Sway House to create content for multiple platforms. 

In the film, Hall has no lines, but commiserates with Padgett’s ex, Jordan Van Draanen (Peyton Meyer) about girls. In the scene, Van Draanen soulfully mourns that the girl he dumped Padgett for has ghosted him, then asks his friends (including Hall) if they caught all that on camera. (By the time of the film release, Hall and Rae were no longer together, which may make viewers curious how Hall now feels about that scene…)

Spencer X as the DJ

TikTok viewers may also catch the cameo of Beatboxer Spencer X as the DJ behind the karaoke competition. With over 54 million followers, the sound effects champ (who includes the label Mouth Music Man on his site) also has two singles of beatboxing and remixed vocals available on Spotify.

Kourtney Kardashian as Jessica Miles Torres

While Kardashian needs no introduction, this real-life friend of Rae’s takes on the role of Padgett’s sponsor, an exec at Bunny Venom, who fires Padgett when her image goes wrong. Kardashian became a reality star in 2007’s Keeping up with the Kardashians and is involved in fashion along with her sisters. Due to her popular presence on social media, Kardashian is regularly compensated by brands for featuring their products in her posts. She has also helmed the lifestyle website, Poosh.

Tanner Buchanan as Cameron Kweller

Coming from a more traditional acting background, Buchanan plays an artist who has no interest in the falseness of the high school world (and gives out sage words of wisdom)–though deep inside, he’s still mourning the loss of his mother and feel disconnected from his family and friends until Padgett breaks through his armor. Viewers might recognize him from TV series like Game Shakers or Designated Survivor, but the martial arts skills he shows off in He’s All That might be better attributed to the set of Cobra Kai, another Netflix production (after its first two seasons on YouTube Red) in which he plays Robby Keene.

Peyton Meyer and Madison Pettis

Padgett has two antagonists in the film: ex Jordan Van Draanen (Meyer) and rich girl frenemy Alden (Madison Pettis). Meyer is known for Girl Meets World and American Housewife, while Pettis made her name as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughter in The Game Plan on the Disney Channel. If her voice is familiar, it may be because the He’s All That mean girl also played animated characters including Izzy in Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Zuri in The Lion Guard.

Myra Molloy and Annie Jacob

This 2021 update to the classic teen movie features a secondary romance between two queer girls of color—Padgett and Cameron’s besties who hit it off, despite their social strata differences. LEGO fan Nisha is played by Annie Jacob, known for her role as Glory Moffett on Motherland: Fort Salem. Sweetheart rich girl Quinn is played by relative newcomer Myra Molloy.

Matthew Lillard as Principal Bosch

In the 1999 film She’s All That, Lillard played an obnoxious reality star who steals the girlfriend of the main character, played by Freddie Prinze Jr (also Lillard’s co-star in Scooby Doo). Lillard isn’t shown for most of He’s All That, as only his voice is featured for the majority of the movie, until the final scene, in which he’s revealed to be the principal of the high school.

Rachel Leigh Cook as Anna Sawyer

She’s All That lead star Cook comes back not as her original character, but as Padgett’s mom, who is a nurse working hard to keep them in the best school district. As the film comes to a close, a remix of the song “Kiss Me” plays at the school dance–a direct call back to the original film, which used that as the main theme. Cook’s recent Love, Guaranteed was another Netflix Original.

While He’s All That offers no surprises, the cameos and callbacks to the original film make this teen movie enjoyable as exactly what it is: a familiar tale with the usual happy ending, updated for a new audience.
