Risetober 2023: Day 22 - Portal Chopped
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had been a long day.
The shift at work was extraneously long, the interactions with customers were either profoundly rude or bland, the whole day itself just felt like drudgery.
The person who had endured the hardships of retail work all day finally let their hair down from its tight bun to release some tension from their head as they walked into the alleyway outside their job.
The walk to their apartment wasn’t far, but seeing as their shift went later than their typical one, the alley was far darker than they had anticipated.
However, it wasn’t very hard to see due to the neon glowing portals suspended in the air- hold up, what?
The exhausted employee squinted at the spectacle they were seeing before them in disbelief, thinking that they must be more tired than they thought.
But even as they blinked, the scene before them was the same.
Some sort of band of four greenish people were fighting a hippopotamus guy? The species weren’t their primary concern.
What grabbed the civilian’s attention were the various weapons whirling through the air. A technological staff of some sort whirred near their head. An orange, chain-based weapon would have hit them had they not ducked. Bladed silver rings, coming from the hippo, whipped overhead.
In all honesty, they couldn’t tell what exactly they walked into.
“Ope, we got a witness!” an overly excited voice called through the chaos before a flash of blue appeared before the person.
At first, when they saw a blue clad turtle emerge from the portal and heard his words, they thought they were about to be killed for seeing too much or something. As they clenched up their fist, getting ready to swing and run, the turtle raised his hands in mock surrender.
“It’s alright!” he assured with a nervous chuckle. “Let’s get you out of here, yeah?”
They narrowed their gaze and reluctantly nodded. Their hands were still ready to be thrown at any given moment, but they figured they might as well get out of the alleyway.
The turtle glanced back and saw his brothers were wrapping up the fight before nodding at the person.
“Alright, mystic portal,” he said, mostly to himself. The person raised an eyebrow and wondered what was going on and if this was actually some sort of weird and oddly good quality LARPing session going on. Before they could even get a word out of their closed up throat, the ground underneath them evaporated into a tunnel of blue, and gravity lost its hold on them as they fell in.
A churning blend of purple and blue and green flooded their eyes as a similarly churning sensation settled in their stomach. Their hair whipped around them, obstructing their vision but, at the same time, making the sight so much worse.
Their vision spun as they moved to exit through one facet of the odd tunnel, but they could feel one foot hit solid ground.
Based on the green silhouette they saw in front of them, the turtle had made it out before them.
“Boom! Civilian? Saved,” the turtle flaunted, facing away from the portal and slinging his weapon over his shoulder. “Villain? Thwarted. Hotel? Trivago.”
Half of their body still felt staticy, almost electric; it was still in the portal. But they felt the area of electric blue behind them growing smaller, the light of it dimming. They moved quickly to exit but could tell it was moving too rapidly for them to make it.
“Espera-”
He could barely make out their call for him to wait before he lost concentration on holding the portal open.
And it closed with a sharp shink.
The sound of the blade hung thickly in the following disconcerting silence.
Leo froze, as if moving would somehow trigger something awful to happen behind him, if it hadn’t already.
He only slowly pivoted around when he heard the sound of sniffles, and, by goodness, was he calling upon Pizza Supreme to have not let him have portal chopped a literal person. He felt ill.
Leo’s eyes cautiously roved over them, searching for any sign of obvious physical injury. He sighed upon seeing no blood or anything of the sort, but something was still off about them, besides the tears forming in their eyes.
Wait, was their hair that short or choppy earlier?
Oh. That was it.
Their hands gripped their freshly cut hair and felt the differences of it, prompting another sad sniffle from them.
Leo was absolutely flabbergasted.
After a moment of just gawking and processing what he had inadvertently, in a roundabout way, caused, he cautiously stepped closer to them and cleared his throat.
“If it’s any consolation, you look great with short hair,” he offered with as convincing a smile as he could make. He genuinely meant that their hair was nice, but his eyes still held apprehension over what their reaction would be.
With good reason, too, because the tears in their eyes pooled over after he spoke.
“Weyyyy, what the heck,” they tried to blink their tears back and, after doing so, just stared back uncomfortably at the turtle.
Not necessarily due to the fact that he was a turtle, but mostly because they were just processing that he was a turtle.
“¿Pero qué te pasa?”
It went without saying, there was a lot of highly warranted explanation that happened after.
That, and the exchange of enough money to go to a hair salon.

Rise July Prompt 1: Beach
Now I don't have it in me to do another full month of prompts quite like I did for TMayNT but we'll see how we go. I had another idea for this prompt but I don't think I've ever painted water before, at least not like this, so I wanted to give it a go.
I wanted Donnie to be part of the wave but still distinct. I'm pretty happy with it overall. So much for trying a new style but, shrug. I could work on this more but I've already spent several nights on it and although I have enjoyed it, I want it done so I can work on other stuff. I also wouldn't want to over work it and I'm satisfied by what I managed to produce so, here we go.
Enjoy the waves Dontron.

Draxum's Nightmare: A Post-ROTTMNT Movie Comic, Part 3/9
Tumblr media
First || Prev || Next
On a personal note I HATE having to draw Draxum's big shoulder pad sleeve things they make me so MAD and I don't know why but I actually hate them and then it dawned on me that I'm the artist... I can change his fit... I can draw him however I like...!
So minor wardrobe change for Mr. Warring Warrior Scientist over here he is so much easier to draw now :D
Also a few fun details: The posters on Draxum's wall include: my classifications and categories of ROTTMNT magic, a Draxum version of Leonardo da Vinci 's "the Vitruvian Man", and a list of several ROTTMNT artists/writers/animators/creators that I follow
Tumblr media
I hope the artists don't mind me tagging them... @filsa-mek @hatekawa @funneylizzie @kathaynesart @somerandomdudelmao @ashwii @angelpuns @sariphantom @imaginashon @tapakah0

I'm combining days 13 + 20 of @sariphantom's Rise August Art Challenge (kimono + fashion), but got a bit ambitious and will have to post it on day 20 to give myself enough time to finish.
So for now, here's a "work in progress" GIF as a preview! It's just a couple of unfinished snippets (definitely need to fix a few things!).
Tumblr media
I also feel like I should mention that these ones are screenshot edits, not full redraws! There's no way I'd be finished by day 20 if I was fully redrawing every frame!

Risetober 2023: Day 8 - Green
Tumblr media
Green didn’t know what to expect when he looked into the mirror.
He was startled? Surprised? Indifferent? He didn’t quite know.
He wasn’t the warrior designed and cultivated by Draxum, nor whoever the people he was with thought he was.
He was just pathetic.
Washed out, dull, a husk of both personas.
There was no helmet, none of his gear.
Besides the bandages on his neck, the red crescent-shaped markings adorning his face were the only notable part of him.
Staring at his reflection, all it reminded him of was the scores of similar colored liquid spilled by his blade, his hand.
Pressing his radial finger to his cheek, Green almost swore he could see the color spill down his hand. He could feel it. Coppery and pungent and coagulate, seeping down his forearm.
But none of that mattered.
He was no warrior, no champion, no weapon.
All he could do was attempt to appease the turtles and Splinter, like he did in every other encounter he had.
So he would try.
(@sariphantom just a little drabble I wrote based on a scene in Chapter 24 of @eternalglitch’s LFLS, NOT part of the story. also I feel like I fell into a trap with this prompt lol)

Rise August: Purple Dragons
Based on the short collab story written by @boots-with-the-fur-club and @daboyau
Tumblr media
Part 1 and Part 2 of “Artificial”, the story behind this fanart
For real this was so much bigger than I expected it to be?? Lol but I think it looks KILLER so... a win for me!
As time-consuming as drawing each individual reality was, I think the toughest thing was trying to come up with future designs for them based on how the fics described them. The story left them very open to interpretation, so I mostly just spitballed with what I assumed they each would do, if they went their separate ways....
I figured Mikey would stay with Draxum to learn more about his mystic powers, and essentially become the savior of the Yokai. In the fic Leo mentioned becoming a kids' theater counselor for Yokai, so I dressed him like a single dad trying to impress lol. Donnie was tough... I was torn between drawing him in casual clothes like Leo, but eventually decided to show my idea of what he'd been up to -- working as a tech mastermind vigilante. Turtle version of Batman, if you will. And lastly, Raphael.... I figured he'd continue the family business of being a hero, even if it was all on his own. So he'd still wear the ninja outfit like from his teens... the only part of his family he had left, maybe.
(I still also subscribe to the theory that Raph was the one who asked Kendra to do this, but she twisted his wishes and left them to die in their fantasies.)

Rise August Art Challenge
I stumbled upon @sariphantom's Rise August Art Challenge and it really hyped me up! Sooo, here's a one-shot covering two prompts: "April O'Neil" and "Sleepover". YES, I am on time for the second prompt 😎 Enjoy!
Tumblr media
----------
Weird
1600 words, no particular warning needed
----------
"Pass me the screwdriver, will you?"
Donnie lets his hand open in the air for a couple of seconds, then another, before wiggling his fingers. When, still, nothing comes, he increases the volume a notch.
"Screwdriver?"
No answer.
Not bothering to pull his goggles off, Donnie tears his eyes away from the Turtle Tank radio system to look at the figure standing beside him.
Leaning against the desk, April has her eyes locked on her phone, expression bored.
Shrugging, he makes a few steps to get the tool and gets back to the matter at hand. He is deep into focus again when she suddenly decides to talk, distracting him.
"Do you think I'm weird?"
The question is simple enough, and April’s voice is nothing but neutral. In reaction, Donnie's chuckle is immediate and genuine.
"Oh, that's a good one," he grins, amused, putting his welder down on the table.
"It is?" April asks.
"I don't know, April, you tell me!” he says as he tugs at a few wires to test them. “You're the one attracting extraordinary situations like a magnet."
"Right," she says, and something sounds off.
Lifting his goggles over his forehead this time, Donnie turns to her and notices the slightest frown on her face. The social behavior studies he despises must have gotten something right, because surely enough, Donnie feels himself frown in return.
"Oh snap," April jerks when her phone pings, "is it Wednesday already?!"
"Wednesday, August 16th," he provides absentmindedly.
"CRAP!" she shouts, straightening up and walking away in a rush. "My English assignment! Gottagobye-"
"See you later," Donnie calls after her, and stares at the empty doorway for a second or two.
----------
Later that day, the atrium of the lair is the theater of an impromptu brainstorming session.
"We wanted to go for another Sewer Tire Ride. Why not bring her along?" Raph cheerfully suggests. "Those are always fun times!"
"Except when some of us get separated from the group," Leo mumbles as he fiddles with his skateboard's wheels.
Mikey shakes his head with energy. "Guys, there's no way April will want to swim in the sewers."
"Plus," Donnie adds, "it's not exactly an activity I'd call normal."
"But she ain't exactly normal either," Raph remarks.
"Sheesh, Raph, you can't say to a girl she's weird," Mikey jokes, and misses the way Donnie flinches.
"Well, it's not the first time she frets about this stuff," Leo points out, holding his chin. "She could probably use something classic, for once."
"Aaand we're back at the beginning of the conversation," Donnie sighs in defeat.
"Let's focus for a second," Mikey says, holding one hand up in front of him, rubbing between his eyes with the other. "What's a thing we do that's both enjoyable and normal?"
The silence that follows is so dense they can almost see it with naked eyes.
"Okay then," Raph pushes, "what's a thing humans do that's both enjoyable and doable for us?"
"That eliminates everything sewers related," Donnie thinks aloud.
"And Turtle Tank related," Mikey adds.
"And heroes related," Raph pouts.
Leo snaps his fingers. "Ooh ho ho, I think I know just the thing!" he says in his best I'm-awesome-and-I-know-it voice, which makes everybody subconsciously tense. He flips his mask tails before making finger guns at his self proclaimed twin brother. "Donnie, you're loaded, right?"
Donnie cringes.
He doesn't like this.
He doesn't like this one bit.
----------
April’s conception of normality might be a bit skewed.
“I found Mayhem in the streets,” she’d told her parents when she’d first brought her new pet home. It’s a mutant dog thingie I picked in a mad goatman’s lab, she hadn’t said. And it also teleports, she most certainly hadn’t added.
“I’m going for a sleepover at my friends’!” she tells her parents now as she leaves with her backpack. You know, the giant turtles living in the sewers, she doesn’t say. Whose father is a rat formerly known as an action star movie, she definitely doesn’t add.
On her way to the nearest manhole, she tries to take a guess at whatever the plan might be, knowing full well it’s a lost battle. The boys have been rather vague with their invitation, like they often are. Hey, you should come over for pizza night, they say before dragging her in a maze of death. Yo April, wanna come see Leo make a fool of himself as a basketball mascot? they ask and then end up playing against a full team of mystic monsters. Not that she minds, really; she’d die before admitting it, but that maze pizza might’ve been the best she’s ever had, and she finds herself having fun all the way with whatever situation they get themselves into.
The thing is, there’s nothing in there that she can bring up in casual conversations with her classmates, which leads to her barely sharing any of her personal life at school. Which leads to her feeling like an outcast, at times.
April’s nature being what it is, she doesn’t mull over it. Right now, she’s quick to shake the blues away, and she’s excited as ever when she reaches the lair. The boys greet her with a glee she’s delighted to see, and they start speaking all at the same time, explaining they’re actually going out for the week-end. That’s hardly the first time something like that happens, April thinks, not reading too much into it - okay, maybe she’s getting a little suspicious over the Hamato family’s growing agitation. Raph’s hands are stimming, Leo and Mikey keep on interrupting each other, Donnie has his sacred board shorts on and Splinter is carrying an honest-to-God suitcase. With wheels.
She can’t help but squint skeptically when they leave the Turtle Tank in the garage and get in an old-school van instead - probably a rental car. Raph makes himself as small as he can to fit at the back of the van, and Donnie hits the road as soon as everyone’s settled. April’s wariness is short lived, though, with how easy it is to vibe with the pop music blasting on speakers; how funny it is to take sides when Raph and Leo fight over which song to put up next, how good it feels to join Mikey and Donnie as they sing their lungs out, or how amazed she is at the way Splinter recognizes the landscapes around them as they get out of New York.
April half expects their destination to be some kind of yokai residence, or maybe something along the lines of a mystic cave. She’s actually surprised when they pull up in front of a cute, cozy, perfectly typical little cottage next to a pond, lost in the middle of nowhere.
The boys jump out of the van like the seats have been burning their butts; April reminds herself they’ve probably never been driving for this long before. She’s glad to stretch her legs, too, and the excitement takes over her once more as they go exploring their house for the night, bickering over who gets to take which room, making “whoops” of victory with every new discovery in the closets and whistling in appreciation at the size of the bathroom, which looks like it can handle even Raph.
If April wasn’t so thrilled, she would marvel at how casually the whole week-end flows, at how domestic and relatable this sleepover is. She’s too busy hosting a cannonball competition in the pond to think about how different it feels from their clandestine dives into New York rooftops’ pools. Too busy decorating her homemade pizza to realize how common the ingredients are. She’s so focused on her Monopoly strategies to try and remember when was the last time she played board games with anyone, and she’s too captivated by the local frogs’ loud singing at night to bother with any kind of late evening existential questioning.
Her sleep is so sound that the rays of the sun aren’t enough to wake her up the next morning; she gives a silent nod to her past self for putting up an alarm and sneaks her way downstairs, fully intending on making breakfast for everyone. She revels in the way the smell of eggs and bacon wakes the whole house up, laughs at Leo’s repetitive yawns, puffs up at Mikey’s praises on her cooking. She smiles as Donnie instinctively checks his phone, forbids Splinter to wash the dishes - that’s the least she can do to express her gratitude - and joins Raph for a little morning jog around the pond. When they pack up again, each of them seems lighter than they had before the trip.
It’s only on their ride back to the city that it dawns on her. There are a lot of things they could’ve done differently this week-end. They could’ve gone to a mutants-friendly place, or gotten some fancy Hidden City pizza. They could’ve traveled with the help of Leo’s portals, or stayed in the lair for a movie night like they usually do. She knows how sincerely she would’ve enjoyed each of these options.
But the truth is that she’s glad for the road trip. She’s charmed with the cottage, and baffled with the simplicity of it all.
This is definitely something she could tell her classmates all about, if she wanted. And maybe she will, when the opportunity presents itself.
Right now, though, she’s just content to lay her head against Mikey’s shoulder and to drift off, lulled by the sound of Leo’s bragging about some imaginary victory at RISK and by the smoothness of Donnie’s driving.
From then on, they pick a new place to spend the week-end at least once a year, and they all look forward to those moments just as much as the Lair Games.
