Prompt: "Just Breathe"
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
A/n: More angst!! I appreciate all the support for these little drabbles sooooo much!!
angstober masterlist here ♡
~~~
“Come on. Come on!”
Bucky was panicking.
How had you fallen so fast? So suddenly?
One moment you were beside him, the next you were mixed between cracked concrete and metal pipes—falling, falling, falling. Who knew bridges were so unreliable?
“Wake up, sweetheart. Come on, please,” he pleaded. Begged. His hands kept moving, kept pushing life into your chest as tears mixed with the saltwater on his cheeks. “You don’t get to leave me.”
Steve was somewhere near the shore, fighting off whatever creature had blown up the bridge. And thank god for Steve, because Bucky would sooner let the creature from space eat him before he left you. Before he let you die.
In some cynical, self-hating part of his brain, Bucky registered that you were already dead.
He pumped his arms more steadily, applying more pressure, willing your heart to start beating. You weren’t dead. You weren’t. Because if you were gone… well, Bucky felt the repercussions of such a thing as he stared down at your waning, wet skin. Your lips were turning an unnatural shade and Bucky felt the reality, this reality, sink into his very bones.
Sand bit into his knees where the torn material of his pants failed him, but Bucky felt it like lidocaine had been injected right to the site. A sob wracked his chest, almost crippling him as he gave his breath to you, and Bucky decided right then and there that nothing in his life had compared to this.
The way your body moved was making him sick. You only budged when he forced the motion into your limbs, your neck only turned when he tilted it up to try and save you.
This was awful, unimaginable.
“I love you,” he whispered, shaking hands coming to brush the hair from your forehead. You hated when it fell into your eyes. “I love you, honey. Please.”
His words broke, so Bucky kissed your skin instead. Your cheek, your neck, your shoulder—he kissed you to quell the unevenness of his own breath, and then he restarted compressions.
“You can’t—” he struggled. “—you can’t let a little water take you out. I love you so much, it doesn’t work like that.”
But, in real life, it did work like that.
There was nothing supernatural pumping in your veins. You were human, breakable, and while Bucky was used to this truth, he had never felt it as strongly as he did in this moment.
Somewhere, Steve called his name.
Bucky was only listening for one sound, and it wasn’t Steve.
Grief invaded the deepest parts of him, and it was slowing him down. Bucky never felt slow. Bucky was a machine. He could fix things and make them right. He had strength and invincibility and power.
Bucky could fix you, too. He could make you right.
Couldn’t he?
His crying had turned unintelligible, just small words lost between tears and gasping breaths. You’d cried like this one time. Right now, Bucky couldn’t remember why, but he’d held you and told you he’d never leave you. He’d run gentle fingers across your temple and stayed awake when you fell into a fitful sleep.
Bucky was alone as he cried.
“I can’t do this without you. I can’t.”
You coughed. It started small and then grew into a hacking, choking sound. Bucky startled, took a split second to watch the way your chest moved on its own, and then he pulled you forward with vigor. Your chin slotted over his shoulder and his hand made an imprint in the wet material at your back.
“Hey, hey,” he breathed, shaky and softer than he had ever spoken. “Just breathe. You’re okay. Breathe, I got you.”
Your fingers curled into his shirt, ripping at velcro and kevlar as you fought for air. Bucky held you through it, pressed his nose to the warming skin of your head and rocked the two of you without realizing it. Grief was still pounding in his bones. He wasn’t sure if that would go away anytime soon. If the weight of you being dead was ever going to leave him, even as you sat in his arms and choked out breaths.
“Bucky,” you eventually wheezed out, pulling back from his grasp. “I—”
“Shhh,” he hushed. Because as much as he wanted to hear you speak, hear proof that you were lucid and knew him and loved him, you were struggling. “Don’t try to talk. You’re okay. You’re okay, right?”
It sounded like a question no one could answer.
But you nodded, and Bucky pulled you back into his chest. “Just breathe, baby. You’re okay.”
Sonictober2023 Day 20! Theme: Rooftop.
In order to avoid causing panic with his new body, Sonic the Werehog decides to stay out of sight from up above. Still, when you get a view like this and a dear friend to share it with, it’s not so bad.
(steddie | teen | 1.7k | tags: established relationship, rockstar!eddie, soft boys, Steve takes care of Eddie, Vecna aftermath | @steddielovemonth Love is a warm hug by @unclewaynemunson | AO3)
Tumblr media
They made it. They really did it.
Corroded Coffin play in front of thousands of people in a sold-out Madison Square Garden. Every single person seems to know their songs by heart and is singing them back at them loudly. They cheer and scream their names and Eddie feels like he's flying so high he's on his way to the moon.
This moment right now, right here, is what he has been dreaming of ever since Wayne gave him his old acoustic guitar for his fourteenth birthday and showed him how to play his first song. He always knew he'd end up here, deep, deep down. Never lost hope.
Well, that's not exactly true, but nobody knows that but Steve.
Because it was Steve who helped him to find that precious hope again, to rekindle the wild spirit inside him that only wanted to be heard with his music. He had almost lost that gift along with his left nipple.
The bat bites had been bad, of course. Pieces of his flesh were missing, gnarled scars littered his body, even as he decorated it with a plethora of new tattoos. They'll always be there.
But the worst part hadn't been the flesh wounds. It had been the infection. Robin hadn't been so far off in her fears back in the Upside Down, because while neither he nor Steve had gotten rabies, the bat's saliva hadn't been the most sterile substance to get into his wounds, and more than one bite had become infected as a result. The worst one had been on his left forearm and had caused some severe nerve damage.
The doctors had been able to save his arm and most of the feeling in his hand, but relearning how to play the guitar had been excruciating. The pain had been really bad, but even worse was the frustration, the white-hot rage he felt at this cosmic injustice. It wasn't enough that he was basically an orphan (because his father could be dead for all he knew, Eddie hadn't heard from him in years at that point), living in a trailer park and being labeled the town freak who everyone still thought had murdered several people. No, he also had to get mauled by demonic bats in an alternate dimension, nearly die, and fight his way back to his feet only to find out that he couldn't do the one thing that had always given him at least some peace of mind. His ticket out of this hellhole of a town, just gone. Poof.
Tumblr media
It had been one of those summer days, so hot and humid that it felt like warm water was filling his lungs and dripping out of every pore of his body. He had been sitting on his bed in just his boxer shorts and a crop top because any clothes were too much, with his guitar on his lap. Eddie had been so focused on getting this one simple tune right for hours now, his fingers raw and aching, his nerves screaming at him to please stop. Only he couldn't.
He couldn't stop, because to stop would be to give up. It would mean accepting this new reality in which Eddie Munson had lost a vital part of himself; his music.
The pain had been almost unbearable for the better part of an hour by now, but it wasn't until his fingers cramped so badly that he couldn't even hold it anymore that he threw his beloved acoustic guitar off his lap and onto the floor with enough force that it was a wonder it didn't break.
"Fuck," he yelled with bitter resignation, rising like bile in his throat and spilling out in the form of hot tears from his burning eyes, and then "Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck," a repetitive mantra of pain and sorrow as sobs broke from his aching chest.
He was brought back from the brink of a meltdown by the pressure of a warm hand on his knee, another hand cupping his burning cheek.
"Eddie, hey, man, you're scaring me. Can you look at me, please?" Steve's voice filtered through the anger and grief that constricted his chest, and Eddie lifted his wet eyes to meet Steve's hazel ones. They were bright and warm, even with his eyebrows knitted with worry. They had become close friends over the past few months and Eddie could read his face like an open book.
"That's good, you're doing so good," Steve's voice soothed some of the ragged edges of the broken pieces that had once made up a whole person. His warm hands found Eddie's left hand, still bent into a misshapen claw, and began to massage it gently.
It felt heavenly, even if it still hurt, the gentle but firm pressure slowly loosening the tightly curled digits. Eddie's breathing had slowed, as had his heartbeat, and by the time Steve had finally stopped massaging of Eddie's hand, the sun had begun to set outside.
"Thanks," he had whispered, suddenly ashamed of his outburst, "you didn't have to do that." What he meant was, 'You shouldn't have had to do that. You shouldn't have had to see that.'
Still holding Eddie's hand loosely in his, Steve simply said, "I know. I wanted to. I always want to." The hazel eyes searched and held his again. "You want to tell me what happened? You don't have to, but I have it on good authority that I'm an excellent listener."
That had made him laugh. "That's only because Birdie speaks for both of you when she starts rambling."
"Takes one to know one," Steve had teased back, and the rest of the tension had seeped out of Eddie's body. He had told Steve everything then, about his hand, his fears, his shattered hopes and dreams. Steve hadn't lied, he was a great listener. Attentive and calm, he let Eddie talk without once interrupting.
After Eddie had finished, Steve had been quiet, clearly thinking about what Eddie had told him. After a while of comfortable silence, Steve finally broke it by asking, "Is it possible that you want it too much?"
"Huh?"
"To be able to play the guitar like you used to, I mean. I feel like maybe you want it so much that all the pressure you're putting on yourself is making you so tense and stressed that it's only getting worse."
Eddie wanted to protest, to tell Steve that there was no such thing as wanting too much, but then he stopped himself. Steve had proven himself to be far smarter and more insightful than anyone had ever given him credit for, so instead of denying the possibility outright, he had asked, "What makes you think that?"
Inexplicably, the question had made Steve smile. "When Nancy left me for Jonathan, I was kind of desperate. It sounds silly now, but I thought I needed to find a girl to help me get over it, to prove to myself that I was still attractive, still a catch. Still lovable." The smile had vanished from his face at those words. "I tried so hard, it wasn't even funny anymore, just kind of sad. Robin even had a whole board dedicated to my failures. She told me to just be myself, to let it come to me instead of chasing it like a dog after a bone. It was hard to hear at the time, but you know what? She was right."
Eddie only ever knew the Steve who never had any trouble picking up girls, so it was strange to hear him talk about a time when he clearly didn't.
"So all I'm saying is, maybe take it easy on yourself. Play for the same reasons you started, not because you want to recreate someone you no longer are. None of us is who we were before. None of us ever will be. But you can become someone new. It's up to you who you want to be instead."
After his little speech, Steve had gotten up to get them a couple of beers, and they had just hung out for the rest of the night, the guitar forgotten. It stayed in a corner of his room where Eddie wouldn't see it for a week, until Eddie felt a genuine desire to play something that had been stuck in his head whenever he thought of Steve.
It was the first tune he could get through on his guitar. It was the first song he ever played just for Steve, before he leaned in and caught Steve's lips in a soft kiss for the first time. It became the song he hums whenever Steve wakes up from a nightmare, either while holding Steve in his arms or over the phone when he's on tour.
Tumblr media
So it's no surprise that this is the song they play as an encore at Madison fucking Square Garden.
"Hey everybody. This last song is for someone very special to me, so please let's hear it for the love of my fucking life". The crowd goes wild and Eddie winks at the camera that projects his face onto the big screens behind them. "This is for you sweetheart, thank you for always believing in me. You knew I could be someone new long before I did. I wouldn't be here without you and I don't want to be. Nothing makes sense without you. This song is called 'Someone New' and someday I want to play it at our wedding."
He gives it everything he's got, forgetting the last 90 minutes he's been on stage, to make these four minutes the most intense of their whole set. Everyone holds up a tiny flame with their lighters, and when they're done, there's a reverent silence before it breaks into thunderous applause. They cheer, they whistle, they scream.
Eddie doesn't hear any of it, his senses attuned to just one person he's spotted at the edge of the stage exit. He puts down his guitar, walks over to the tall man waiting for him with open arms, and sinks into them as if coming home.
"You did it, baby," Steve whispers into his ear and Eddie just buries himself deeper into his boyfriend's body. "I'm so, so proud of you."
"I love you," he replies simply, the only thing that matters with strong arms wrapped around him, the familiar scent of Steve filling his senses, and the steady beating of Steve's heart against his, the metronome of his new life as sure as ever.
It doesn't matter that they made it, not as much as the man holding him tightly, lovingly.
Eddie's new life is right here in his arms.
Inspired by the prompt Love is saying "I love you" even when you're scared by @quinns-shadowy-arts for @steddielovemonth day 20
Give and Take
wc: 1737 | rated: t | cw: mentions of drinking and smoking weed | tags: Hurt Feelings (past), Fear of Rejection, Eddie realises he has a crush on Steve, Love Confessions, Friends to Lovers
Eddie is just about to leave when Wayne calls after him. Tells him not to stay out too late and to say Hi to Steve. And then he ends how he always does, never lets Eddie go without:
„Love ya, son."
Eddie smiles, gives his uncle an affirming nod before making his way out of the door.
He's heard it so many times now, these words his uncle says so easily, and he wished he could do the same.
It's something Eddie struggles with a lot; telling people he loves them is generally scary as shit.
Because in his experience, to love means to hurt because loving always comes with a price, a piece of your heart you give away with no chance of getting it back.
He’s given away too many of those.
Gave a piece to his mother when he was six. Proudly holding up the card his teacher helped him write for mother’s day. “I love you, mommy” it said on the heart-shaped paper and Eddie smiled, toothless and wide. Got a dead-eyed glare in return when she threw it on top of a pile of unopened letters. Not saying a word, not even acknowledging his extra neat hand-writing or the colourful flowers he’d drawn on the back.
He gave one piece to Jenny in grade 6. The girl with the blue eyes and rosy cheeks who was always so nice to him. One day after school she took his hand and kissed him on the cheek. Eddie felt like flying, told her he liked her a lot, thinking she might feel the same. But Jenny just scrunched her nose, pure disgust written on her face when she told him “Eww, no. It was just a dare.”
He lost a large piece in high school, gave it to Nick. The pretty boy with the seductive smile who dragged him behind the bleachers and stuck his tongue down Eddie’s throat. The kiss was too wet and too sloppy but Eddie thought maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be. Let Nick push him to his knees and willingly opened up wide. Not once, not twice, it went on for a month. And Eddie felt wanted but apparently wanted too much when he asked him to be his boyfriend.
Eddie learned to keep his mouth shut. To keep the remaining pieces to himself.
-🖤-
Steve is already waiting in his car that’s parked outside the Munson’s home, waving happily when he sees Eddie step outside.
They’ve made plans to spend the evening at Lover’s Lake, have a couple of beers and maybe a smoke while watching the sunset.
They do that often, just hanging out together. Enjoying the long summer days and each other’s company.
It’s always nice to spend time with Steve because with him Eddie never has the feeling he needs to tone himself down. Can ramble and rant, can be as loud and impulsive as he naturally is without having to worry about scaring him off. Steve never makes him feel bad about himself, accepts Eddie as he is.
Being with Steve always feels right.
They get along. They’re friends now. And the more time Eddie spends with Steve, the more he understands him, sees him.
He’s vulnerable, like Eddie. Has had his fair share of people misjudging him based on what they see on the outside. Where people assume Eddie is scary and mean, they think of Steve as being strong but dumb. Where they think Eddie’s only interests are metal and nerd games, they think Steve’s life revolves around nothing but sports and girls.
But Eddie knows better. Knows all of Steve’s layers.
Sure, Steve does love his silly ball games (something Eddie will never understand) but he also loves to cook and bake. He hates the taste of ginger and is afraid of moths. He can’t sleep with his back turned to the door and he likes the sound of heavy rain pounding against the window. He hates to read but he loves to listen if someone takes the time to read to him.
Eddie cherishes Steve’s honesty. The way he’s not afraid to ask questions if he doesn’t understand something. The way he’ll tell you, straight forward, when you’re being unreasonable.
Eddie likes the way his eyes sparkle when he’s happy. Likes the way Steve snorts when he laughs really hard. Eddie likes the snappy tone he uses when someone (usually Dustin) gets on his nerves. He likes Steve's fierceness, and his courage, and how much he cares.
Liking Steve is easy because he’s a genuinely nice guy with a big heart who never lets his friends down and always gives so much.
Eddie feels lucky to have him in his life, would give everything to keep him there.
-🖤-
They are lying side by side on a blanket, their minds comfortably buzzed from the joint they shared, while the sun sets over Lover’s Lake, painting their bodies in a dark orange hue. A gentle breeze caresses their exposed skin, just a warm touch of air drifting over their sun warmed bodies.
It’s quiet out here, now that most of the people that came to enjoy a day at the lake have already gone home.
Eddie thoughtlessly turns his head to look at Steve who is lying there with his eyes closed, basking in the tranquillity of the moment. Calm and content, so still and at peace. So different from his usual demeanour – always alert, always a little tense, always ready to step in if someone requires his help.
He's... beautiful like that.
And suddenly it is like something snaps in Eddie's brain.
He can’t tear his eyes away, lets them wander over Steve’s soft features and the expanse of his body. Wonders, foolishly, what Steve’s skin would feel like underneath his fingertips, what it would be like to hold him, maybe even get a taste of his lips.
    Oh no. Oh fuck.
Something in his gut coils and twists, ripples through him like an electric shock wave when the realisation hits.
It was inevitable, really, and maybe deep down he already knew for much longer than he’d ever admit.
It’s a bitter truth to accept but the confession comes easy now that he allows his heart to speak.
He’s in love with Steve.
Can’t have him, clearly. But that’s just how it is. That’s always how it is.
Eddie turns his head back, eyes pinched close in frustration as he tries to breathe through the stinging pain in his chest. His heart pumps so fast it makes him dizzy, makes him feel a little like spinning on a carousel that’s going too fast.
    SHIT! Eddie thinks or did he said it out loud? Because Steve startles beside him and Eddie can feel him ruffling at their shared blanket when he moves.
   “Eddie? What’s wrong?”
Eddie looks back at Steve who’s suddenly so much closer than he was before –  brows pinched together in question, with small worry lines showing on his forehead, his face hovering over Eddie’s.
   “I just realised something,” Eddie answers too honest, doesn’t know where to go from here but he can’t find it in him to lie.
    “Oh,” Steve breathes out, his expression softening as the seconds pass. “Wanna talk about it?”
   “Uh, I- no. I’d rather not.”
The look Steve gives him shouldn’t sent him spiralling even more but goddamn does he look cute with that stupid smirk tugging at his lips.
Eddie wants to bite him, feels a deep red blush take hold of his face. Maybe he can put it off as a sun burn?
   “Who knew that the great Eddie Munson could be so timid?” Steve jokes and okay.
So much for trying to play it cool.
   “I’m not-“ Eddie takes a deep breath, “It’s just something I can’t tell you.”
Steve sits up and without being prompted, Eddie does the same. For a moment they just look at each other.
   “You know you can tell me everything.”
If Eddie didn’t know better, he’d think there’s something like disappointment ringing in Steve’s voice.
   “Yeah, hah, uh- not this, I guess.”
Eddie looks away, can’t hold Steve’s gaze. Nervously he starts to play with the rings on his fingers until a warm hand stops him, causing him to look back up.
   “Try me.” Steve’s voice is soft and Eddie knows he can trust him but-
    No.
He can’t. This isn’t worth losing him over. Eddie knows how this is going to go. He can’t give anymore pieces away.
   “I-“
Only now Eddie realises Steve’s hand is still resting on his own, his thumb gently rubbing circles over the back of it.
Steve has never touched him like this before, so tender it almost doesn’t feel real.
   “I like you a lot, Steve.” The words sputter out before he can even try to hold them back.
Eddie winces, tries to avert his gaze but before he can turn his head to the side there’s a hand on his cheek and a firm press of lips on his mouth and-
Eddie can taste weed, and beer, and the chips they shared. Steve’s breath is hot as he sighs into the kiss, his lips are plush and soft... they’re so fucking soft Eddie feels like sinking right into them.
He allows his eyes to flutter close as he deepens the kiss, wants more of the taste, more of Steve. His hands find their way to Steve’s hips, digging and pulling like he just can’t help himself, needs Steve closer.
They part when their startled laughter breaks the tension as Steve tumbles ungraciously on top of Eddie, looking down at him with glistening eyes.
   “Fuck, Steve.” Eddie feels giddy, breathless.
   “Yeah. Fuck.” Now it is Steve’s turn to blush.
Somehow their lips find their way back to each other, like it’s easy. And maybe it is.
Maybe it is easy because they both want it.
   “Want you, Eddie. Wanted you for so long but I was scared to tell you that I-“ Steve inhales shakily.
Maybe they both feel the same?
   “I love you, Steve.”
This isn’t just a piece. This is his whole heart he holds it out for Steve to take, hoping that this time, he’ll maybe get something in return.
Eddie holds his breath, feels cold sweat running down his spine as he waits for a rejection that never comes.
   “I love you, Eddie.”
Leap of Faith T | 1,286 words Prompt for @steddielovemonth: Love is saying 'I love you' even when you're scared
Eddie has never been very good at figuring out where his limits lay. It's something that usually proves good- he's willing to try to do anything, sure he can do it and he usually finds that he either can or he can pick up the skills neccessary very fast.
When it comes to romance, he's never quite got it.
He's not sure Robin "gets it" either, but she knows Steve better than he ever could. He trusts her to plan something that would, at the very least, be something Steve would enjoy.
It might not get him a boyfriend at the end of it, but it will at least make Steve happy. It's the best Eddie can bring himself to hope for.
But, even with all of that in mind, Eddie is terrified.
"You'll be fine," Wayne reassures him, for the eighteenth time. "That boy adores you. Even if this don't work out, you'll stay friends."
"Yeah, I know, but..."
"It's still scary," Wayne wraps an arm around his shoulders. "I get it, son. This ain't ever easy. I can't imagine how much harder it is when it's with another boy. But I know you. You're gonna do great."
Before Eddie can respond, there's a knock at the door.
"Oh, shit, I almost forgot-"
Eddie darts off to his room, quickly grabbing the tickets Robin had got him. He can hear Wayne and Steve talking, which makes him rush back.
"Hey!" Eddie says, slightly out of breath. "Sorry. You, uh... you look good."
"Thanks," Steve grins, glancing down at himself.
Objectively, Eddie knows it's an outfit he's worn before- a striped, yellow polo with his favourite jeans and go-to white sneakers.
But he tries to be optimistic, and it's easier than he expects. He's told Steve that those types of jeans suit him, he's told Steve that yellow looks good on him...
"You look good too," Steve adds, looking him up and down.
"Thanks. Uh..." he hesitates, glancing at Wayne, who pointedly raises his eyebrows. "We should head out, right? Movie starts soon."
"Did Robin tell you what movie we're going to see? She gave me the weirdest rundown of tonights plan."
"She told me not to tell you."
"Great," Steve sighs. He tries to frown, to look annoyed, but it fails completely. His excitement is too obvious.
Eddie holds the door open, gesturing Steve through.
When he turns back to say bye, Wayne mouths "good luck" at him, giving him a thumbs up too.
Eddie rolls his eyes. "Thanks. See you later, old man."
Steve is already stood by his car, expression making it clear that he'll lose if he tries to argue that they take his van instead.
"We're not going in the van," Steve says, the second Eddie pulls out his keys.
"I know! Just- one minute!"
He climbs in the back, shoving things aside so he can grab the small box, grabbing the flowers once he's climbed back out.
"For you," Eddie says, holding them both out.
The carnations aren't anything special- Eddie had only picked them specially because they're cheaper- but Steve holds them delicately, eyes full of awe.
"Thank you," he breathes, finally tearing his eyes away from the flowers. "They're, uh... they're really pretty."
"Yeah, they're... you're welcome."
"Could, um... you don't mind if we stop by my house, on the way, right? I should- these need to be put in water."
"That's fine, yeah, I don't mind."
The ride to Steves is quiet, but tense. Eddie keeps his eyes firmly forward, struggling to keep his expression neutral with how Steves eyes keep boring into the side of his head with his glances.
When Steve darts inside, Eddie grabs the box that Steve seems to have missed with the flowers stealing all his attention. He carefully props it on the steering wheel.
He keeps glancing at it as he waits. By the time Steve comes back out, he's wiping his hands on his jeans, anxious.
"Oh!" Steve grins, grabbing the box, excited. He only hesitates for a moment, glancing at Eddie, who gives him a nod. "It's not even my birthday."
He freezes once he finally opens it. He turns to look at Eddie after a moment, expression blank.
"It's, uh... you said you liked it," Eddie explains. "Saw one the other day and, uh... here we are."
"Thank you. Really. I didn't think you'd... well, it's great. Thank you."
The ring is almost plain, a silver band with simple designs carved. It doesn't help that it's old, clearly second-hand.
Eddie thinks the age adds to its charm and, judging by how Steve immediately slides it onto his finger, he seems to agree.
"We're eating after we watch this film, right?"
"Yeah. I thought we'd go to that little burger joint?"
"The one ran by Diane?"
"I think it is. It's got those weird tablecloths with the-"
"The lace things, yeah, that's the one. I love that place!"
Thankfully, conversation comes easy after that. It makes the journey to the cinema less tense. By the time they park, they're teasing each other as usual.
The movie, for Eddie, is boring. Another rom-com that Steve loves.
Eddie spends almost the entire time staring at Steve, enjoying his love of the movie, basking in the second hand joy.
He's almost disappointed when the credits roll.
Their meal makes up for it though. Steve spends the entire time talking about the movie, gushing about the parts he loved and why. The lovesick expression he has, when describing the love the protagonists shared, is worth the price of admission.
Steve gets out, when they pull up to the trailer park, walking him to his door.
"Eds," Steve says, quickly, grabbing his arm when he goes to unlock the door. "You know, tonight was amazing. It was really fun. I'd, um, love to hang out again. If you want."
"Yeah?" Eddie shifts, nervously glancing around. "What if, um..."
Steve waits for a moment but, when it becomes clear that Eddie is too nervous to continue, he asks, "what?"
"I don't want it to be a hang out," Eddie rushes out to say. The words jumble together in his rush, making him almost unintelligable. "I want it to be... to be a date."
"Really? That- yeah. Yeah, I'd love that. Was- this was a date too, right?"
Steves smile is wide, eyes crinkling at the corners. It makes Eddies heart flutter.
"Yeah, I mean, if you want it to be, because... I do. Want it to be a date, I mean."
"It was a date," he nods. "And it was a great date. Perfect."
"Good." Eddie shifts a step closer, taking a shaky breath. "Sorry I didn't ask you, like, properly. I really, um... I really like you, Steve."
"I like you too."
"No, I mean... I'm pretty sure I love you."
"Good, because I'm pretty sure I love you too."
He leans in, quickly kissing Eddie on the cheek. His cheeks are flushed as he quickly looks around.
"Oh, look," he snorts, pointing to one of the windows- Maxs face is peering through the curtains and she gives them a thumbs up. "Brat."
"You... don't mind? That she saw?"
"No? She's like family, man, she's safe." Steves smile falters. "Unless you don't want them to know? Is it too soon? Am I-"
"No, it's great. I just wasn't sure."
"Well, to be clear, I'd scream it from the rooftops if it didn't put a target on your back."
"On our backs."
"Eh, I've got a nailbat, I'm fine. You've been through enough."
"So have you."
Steve rolls his eyes, sighing. "Sure, yeah, whatever. Come on, let me kiss you again before we say goodbye."
Shelter my soul with your love.
Wanda Maximoff x Reader.
Tumblr media
Summary: The absence of the love of your life had you holding onto her sweater for dear life. And as the weeks passed by and her scent started to fade away, you started to feel the dread of losing her at the time that same sweater became your life support.
A/N: DAY 20 OF PROMPTOBER IT'S HERE! This is a continuation of Couldn't stop this if we wanted to, like I promised. Could've posted this on Saturday, but an impromptu chapter of Sweet Blessing took my inspiration away. Lol. Hope you enjoy this thing and your tears are plenty.
-
As your fingers played with the hem of the cozy sweater, you couldn't hold back your mind from going to the past, where better times we lived. A time when you were allowed to see her, where you could hold her and tell her all the things you felt inside.
A better time when you felt complete because you had her.
Now, all you had was this sweater that held the last remains of her. All you had now were the memories and the tears that you were left with.
Nowadays, you were just a shell of what you used to be, and the only comfort you could feel was when holding onto every single trace Wanda has left behind for you to remember her.
Funny how life can take things from you out of the blue. No matter how happy they make you or how invested you are, apparently, when a door closes, it can be right in your nose.
Looking through the floor-to-ceiling window, you made yourself smaller on the couch, allowing Wanda’s almost-faded scent that impregnated the fluffy sweater you religiously wore to engulf you, taking your soul to a sunny day in the park with your beloved’s company.
If only you could revive those impromptu dates.
Your apartment had been abandoned long ago, having settled camp at the massive compound in hopes of easing your pain. But even though most days you made it through the day in a relatively acceptable mood, some days were like a plumb blanket had been placed over you, making it impossible for you to get out of bed, turning the way to your job into utter torture.
Brushing away the never-ending tears, you decided to have some mercy on your rumbling stomach and quickly fixed yourself a simple sandwich since it was a Friday. The week had been full of work, leaving you drained physically and mentally.
“Miss Stark, your vitals are getting agitated. May I check them quickly?” The AI broke the silence, making you work on your breathing.
The lump in your throat had messed with the small bite you just swallowed, making it hard to pass the food.
“‘S okay,” you answered as you chugged a glass of water, fist gripping tightly at the corners of the sink.
You hated eating when you’ve been crying, and you should’ve known better.
The tears falling down your eyes for another different reason than before had you working on your breathing, matching every exhalation with a failed attempt to swallow the bolus trapped in your throat.
Once you finally achieved your task, you filled the glass with water, almost throwing the discarded sandwich on the fridge, before you made your way to Wanda’s bed. The need to just sleep your life away was stronger than any TV show or movie on your current list.
You didn’t like this new empty person you had become. But the sorrow and longing and… torture you experienced had you with nothing but just the needed strength to breathe. So working on your inner growth and that bullshit was not possible at this time. And frankly, you weren’t desperate to get any better, for her absence had ripped your will of living away.
If only you had a grave to cry her on.
Wanda’s ghost following you everywhere was the only thing that had you moving. But as time passed and her body wasn’t around, her smell kept fading away, making it harder and harder to breathe. It was as if your own life had started to leave your body painfully slowly.
So in an attempt to keep her looming presence, you didn’t take off her sweater. Instead, you just laid down on her pillow before covering yourself tightly with the covers, breathing in as much of her aroma to keep you warm as you silently prayed for this agony to end. Once and for all.
“Detka,” her voice, as clear as day, sent shivers down your spine.
“Wands? Wands, where are you?” You cried, the sorrow engulfing you like a cocoon. “Please, I need you.”
Standing there in the middle of nowhere, with the big tall trees surrounding you, the anxiety started to eat you from the inside out.
“Detka,” Wanda’s voice called again and you couldn’t help the choking, feeling your knees collide against the dirty grass at the confusion.
Her voice was way too clear for it to be a result of your imagination.
“Detka,” you felt her hand cup your left cheek and you couldn’t help breaking down completely at the way-too-real feeling. “Baby, I’m here.”
“Wanda,” you cried louder, leaning your head on her hand, “I can’t see you. Please, take me with you,” you begged as your hand placed over your left cheek, choking on the brutal sob that escaped you when you didn’t find her hand there. “I don’t wanna live without you,” you begged, feeling your insides tear apart at the phantom of her.
“Y/N, I am here, my love.” despite the security in her voice, the fact that her touch was only vivid in your imagination had your lungs fighting for a single bit of oxygen.
“Wanda, I’m begging you. I don’t wanna be without you anymore,” your labored breaths sent a painful throb to your head.
“Oh, my sweet girl,” You felt Wanda’s lips against your lips for a few seconds too long before she connected your foreheads.
Jolting awake, your eyes blinked rapidly trying to adjust to the dim lights, making sense of the body against you.
“Detka,”
Looking up, a heart-wrenching cry ricocheted through the room as you launched yourself into those pair of arms you’ve dreamed of for the last 2 months.
Feeling her warmth engulf you, Wanda kissed the top of your head. “I am here, my love.” She only tightened her grip around you, providing you the comfort and the time to calm yourself as she cooed against your hair, rocking you both. “I am here,”
Once your breath returned to normal, you broke the hug to look at her face, choking on a new wave of tears as you cupped her cheeks, looking into those forest green eyes you had missed oh, so much.
“You’re alive,” you cried.
“I am alive, Y/N,” she smiled tearfully, allowing your eyes to scan her face.
Choking on a sob, you launched at her once again, placing your weight on hers as you peppered her face with sloppy kisses as if trying to show her the unconditional love you held for her.
Pausing for a moment, your eyes locked with hers and you felt your heart squeeze in pain at seeing the tears running down her face.
But instead of speaking the words on the tip of your tongue, you joined your lips together, pouring in the kiss every single ounce of devotion you held for her, sighing deeply as your lips danced to a well-known melody at the time your soul eased the suffering away.
“I don’t wanna live without you,” you spoke against her lips, nuzzling your nose against hers.
“I’ll never leave you again,” Wanda’s voice was so intimate you felt a chill run down your spine.
“I love you,” you vowed, sighing in the kiss Wanda just started.
“I love you too, Detka,” the brunette kissed your nose before carefully pushing away. But before you could protest, your eyes scrutinized her movements as she started to undress until she was only in her underwear to do the same with you after, crawling under the covers as she opened her arms in a silent invitation.
Smiling, you cuddled against her front, basking in her half-naked body against yours.
As her scent filled your nostrils, you thanked the fluffy sweater discarded on the floor for keeping you company all this time, making a mental note to have Wanda wear it every day for when she had to go away in her missions. And for your dad to design a device to give you constant information on her vitals.
“You’re thinking too loud,” Wanda spoke against your head.
“I’m not sorry,” you placed a tender kiss on her chest, right where the origami raven was resting, before you looked up, smiling sheepishly.
“I’m in love with you,” she smiled before she kissed you, squishing your body once in the hug before her hand started to run up and down your spine in lazy caresses. “I’ll always be with you, like I know you’ll always be with me. Whereve I go.”
“Marry me,” you pouted, fighting the smile at Wanda’s soft giggles.
“Make it right.” She clicked her tongue.
“Game on, Witchy,” you pecked her lips before you cuddled impossibly closer against her soft skin.
Giving up to the mental exhaustion you’ve been under, you allowed Wanda’s presence to lull you to sleep, knowing she was alive, by your side.
The strong, calm thudding of her heart provided you the comfort you needed, like a silky veil against your scarred soul.
With the last ounce of consciousness you had, you thanked whoever was out there for returning her to you, making a silent promise never to lose faith again.
