ssso my good friend pastell @startagainaprologue mentioned it was struggling with making a human design for the guide and i rubbed my hands together evilly and got to work. aaaaa this was super fun to work on!!!!! thankyou again for letting me draw this graaaa. as always my deranged character design ramblings are below the cut 👍

CHARACTER DESIGN BLAST

most of guide’s colors are slightly shifted to be closer to red and more… desaturated? my default bonnie colors clashed with the palette i usually use for guide so they got changed slightly. i did add the blue on the sash as a reference to my nille design however! and i tend to use cooler colors to represent countries outside of vaugarde, so you could interpret it as a link to the island. if you so desire :3

speaking of the sash, just about everything they’re wearing here is based on another character!! in this case, it’s meant to resemble nille’s waist sash! but with a different pattern. something something only having an imitation of what it lost. the stars are meant to represent siffrin and loop, and also just the universe in general. fun stuff!

i mostly just made their shirt longer for the sake of looking Different from normal bonnie? but combined with the sash it has the fun bonus of having a silhouette similar to siffrin’s cloak. not full intentional but hey! i’ll take it!

the gems on its tail are there to represent odile!! as well as referencing the ka buan tradition of compressing ashes into diamonds. you can draw your own conclusions there! and they go ding ding when it walks :3

the hat/halo isss probably self explanatory? it’s a way to fit guide’s Spiky Head into the design. the halo was added pafter pastell drew buns version of the design auau. i like both! so their hat can be whatever shape you please.

okay! nno more talking about clothes i promise. similar to my ghostlight loop design, i gave it spikier hair!! i have to give sponsors spiky hair to resemble their Spiky Heads. it’s the law. their hair was supposed to be shorter but. i’m pretty sure this is the exact same length i usually draw bonnie’s hair. oops? oh well it looks cute. the stars are honestly just there for fun i didn’t have anything specific in mind

in a similar vein, i changed their eye shape to match the eye shape on guide’s ref! perpetually Sad Looking. on the bright side they aren’t constantly crying anymore!

thheir body is. mostly the same? i decided to make their body Red Tinted for the sake of consistency and i removed the separated limbs aaand. that’s basically it? not much to say! i did add the halo bracelet around their wrist as a callback to the separation though. i didn’t do the same for its shoulder because i am Lazy 🩶

aaand i think that’s everything? well it Isn’t but i think everything else is self explanatory and frankly this is long enough as is. here is the """greyscale""" version as compensation 🩶

i've been thinking about exactly why people portraying one of the other crew members successfully killing Jimmy as a "for what you did to Anya" kind of thing rubs me the wrong way a bit and it's because like..... this is just another form of taking agency away from Anya, in a way. it's kind of framing her as some meek, shivery woman-thing who's entirely at the mercy of the men around her, either to hurt her or save her.

(i understand these are mostly for wish fulfillment on the audience's behalf because everyone would like to see Jimmy pay for his crimes. whether or not this is the intention of the person writing it isn't really relevant, characterization happens with or without intent. i feel like it misses the point by portraying it as an 'ideal ending'.)

because... Anya is a capable person. she takes things into her own hands when she can. it was partially(?) her idea to get into the cargo,

(before he interrupts her.. remember when she interrupted Curly in the dead pixel segment?)

it was her idea to get the code scanner from the cockpit,

it was her idea to get the medication from behind the foam.

(the chance to do these things herself is not given to her.)

she'd been keeping Curly alive for months in a critical state somehow, her psych evaluations at the start are only so useless because Jimmy refuses to take it/her seriously and Curly is obviously biased when he puts it into his own hands. he's known him a long time, like he said. "I'll just put good for that one."

there's not a lot of material to work with because of how the game is framed, but it's there. we are working with two very biased perspectives and neither one lends Anya what she deserves

there's significant changes in how she speaks post- and pre- crash, and depending on who she happens to be talking to. i recommend re-reading her dialogue, because the difference is drastic

she acts the way she does around Jimmy because he has tangibly done horrible things to her, is actively hostile, and physically could not escape him by any means. she can't take away Curly's agency herself, in my eyes. you have to remember that Especially in the post-crash segments of the game, it's entirely from Jimmy's POV, and he obviously does not (and has never) thought very highly of her or treated her with a shred of respect

i've seen a general idea that she can't bear to hurt other people for any reason, but that doesn't really track to me. this is the real point of the post by the way

it seems based on the parts where she says she struggles to give Curly medication. "It just hurts him so much, I can't stand the noise." "It makes me nauseous."

it's not really the same thing as, say, hurting someone in self defense

this sounds like she did want the gun itself. this never felt worded like someone who would refuse to, at very least, threaten Jimmy with a gun, with violence. if she had been given the agency to make that decision on her own. she wasn't though

she still tries to reclaim some of it even as she's denied it

by the end she's still trying to keep that gun out of his hands

i think some people overly soften her, for similar reasons the game itself is trying to comment on. she's not a tender victim who couldn't cause pain to another out of the softness of her soul, she's a person who's had every last bit of agency ripped from her repeatedly until she couldn't take it anymore. that's the point. that's why framing her that way, "needing" someone to save her, is odd to me

she didn't need Curly to save her, she needed him to take responsibility

she didn't want to escalate things, but she's not an idiot. self defense was absolutely on her mind

Mhmm I sure love thinking of the reality where we did get more time to really know Karai and her dynamics with the bros. Losing her hit hard in the finale, but it would’ve hit much, much harder had we known Karai longer and really saw her relationships develop with everyone.

I especially would have been interested in her dynamic with Leo, as past iterations often have the two of them clash in ideals and the like while still sharing many characteristics. Two sides of the same coin, and all that. Her specifically being the bros’ Gram-Gram also adds a whole new dynamic as well.

Imagine how interesting it would be, to have Karai start off on Leo’s side for once, showing wholly just how alike the two are at their cores and bonding as family without the worry of betrayal or animosity that other iterations suffer through, only to have Karai die anyway. Their parting hug and the desperate look of horror Leo wears later on would have hit that much harder, I feel.

If I may ask, how do you make characters look old? I've been trying to draw cats that are on the older side but it doesn't really work for me

Hmmmmm ok! Now take this all with a grain of salt because I’m not like. A professional or whatever at anything to do with cats or anatomy or aging buttttt here’s some traits I noticed in older cats that I like to apply to my designs. Take note, though, that I also apply more human features of aging (eyebags, lots of graying, facial wrinkles) because my style is a lil anthro with the face and whatnot.

The second fic idea is a what-if scenerio where Jimmy dies in the crash due to and altercation with Curly and how Curly would navigate being Captain once he has to notice the little things and how he and Anya's relationship develop as he adopts an identical view point to hers rather than just keeping the peace.

And maybe i will write it but only time will tell tbh but it's stuck in my brain dome for the time being.

Venturiantale is to me a great joy and an insurmountable amount of grief in equal measures. A relic of my childhood, watching their videos in the dark on my phone while up late on a school night and eating lucky charms out of the box, using them as background noise for when I drew or worked on projects, drawing So. Much. Fanart. With a mouse in MS Paint and finding my space on DeviantArt.

But it's a channel I can't really return to unless I'm rewatching it with friends or in a very particular mood. I had a talk with @overthinkingtaleblr about this the other night (I hope you don't mind me @'ing you for this), specifically how I very, very abruptly and severely fell out of love with the channel sometime in 2016. It was a combination of things, be it the ongoing traumatic event that I was dealing with at the time and the content being produced just no longer bringing me any joy.

I think it was around the time that they started doing comment requests, and as you'd expect a lot of the requests were kids younger than me wanting to see fnaf characters in various situations. Nothing wrong with it, but it became clear to me that the channel and the content for it just weren't for me anymore. At some point, between the Christmas of 2015 and the Summer of 2016, I had become an other.

I went back and watched older videos, but eventually I stopped watching the channel altogether. I don't remember when, or why. Though I have zero memory of it, I have thought about this since the conversation with Nat, and like.

I think a lot of my need to cling to Venturiantale as a concept was because it represented a better time of my life. My parents were together, I had friends at school, I had a roof over my head and we had a stable income, we never had to worry about having food on the table, I'd never felt up til that point that my life was actively in any danger. I don't remember much anymore and of what I do remember I want to spare details, but I can tell you that it's nothing a 12 year old should ever go through. I clung to Venturiantale as an anchor of sorts, hoping and praying that if I could just focus on it and nothing else, then the rest of the world would go away and I'd be happy again like I used to be.

When that didn't work, and I found myself growing more angry and bitter and spiteful the more I tried to force it, I abandoned the channel and focused on my own interpretations instead. I was never formerly diagnosed with any daydreaming disorder but given how often I'd retreat inward just to play toys with my made up versions of the channel's characters, like, to the point that it was actively interfering with whatever class work or chores I had, then yeah there was probably something.

It has taken.. a lot. A lot of growth, and relearning, and reflection, to come back to this fanbase and this channel after so many years away from it. So many years of having a knee-jerk response of fight or flight when it's brought up, so many years of feeling bitter and angry over the harassment I recieved for just trying to share my work and thoughts with others. And this isn't even getting into the abuse behind the scenes of the channel itself, but with that now coming to light, it's safe to say that Venturiantale is never going to come back as it once was. It was already dead in the water before then, and as far as 13 year old me was concerned, it died sometime in 2016.

Idk. All this to say, my childhood is gone. It's gone and it's never coming back. I grieve that loss everyday of my life, I've written obituaries for a little girl that no longer exists. I will never be that kid again, that kid is dead like the channel she clung to for comfort and support through the longest, most turbulent 16 months of our lives.

And I am so, so glad that it's over.
