Mean Girls Part 2 (Movie)

Ok so this is my overall opinions on stuff such as the cut songs and the actors etc 😭 (Once again I haven’t actually watched it, I’ve only ever listened to the soundtrack [once 💀] and seen a few clips!)

Let me start with cut songs! It roars (yes I am counting this) - Realistically I don’t really see why they cut it, and honestly I imagine it would’ve fit within the movie better Also, Ik Renee was on broadway as Regina, and Ik she can sing/write, but never let this girl pick up a pen like ever again that song sas horrific 😭 There’s definitely worst songs out there don’t get me wrong but this was absolutely not a good replacement for it roars Where do you belong? - Ok honestly cutting this makes sense, I can see how this would be difficult to translate from the stage, and they’re so theatre that making them pop would be horrible 😭 doesn’t mean I’m not upset abt it tho 😕 Meet the Plastics (also counting this) - Literally what was the point man 😭 if you’re gonna get rid of all of the best parts get rid of the whole song like this was utter bs - sure, I haven’t seen if it worked well in the movie but Idc, there was literally no need 💀 The reprises (all of them excluding someone gets hurt) - I guess I see why they cut these, as the movie would’ve just been made a lot longer with them, kinda wish we could’ve heard aaron sing tho Fearless - Kinda sad they cut this cuz I actually rlly like the song 😕 also completely butchering gretchen and her songs like damn 😨 not yall acting like she’s one of the best singers on that soundtrack 💀Stop - Much like where do you belong, I can actually understand why they cut this one, although I absolutely wanna hear Jaquel sing it (and on his live the other day I’m pretty sure he said he’s planning on releasing a cover) also doesn’t mean I’m gonna be happy abt it tho 😔 WHOSE HOUSE IS THIS - THIS WHOLE SOUNTRACK IS LITERALLY KEVIN G ERASURE BRO 😭 LIKE WDYM WE DONT GET TO HEAR HIM RAP?? YALL R GONNA TELL ME THAT THE ENTIRE PARTY WAS JUST SPOKEN ☹️ More is better - Also kinda like this song, once again wish we could’ve heard aaron sing but it is what it is Ig 🤷‍♀️ Someone gets hurt (reprise) - Ok so this wasn’t in the soundtrack, and seeing clips of it I see why 💀 It was barely even singing?? She was legit just yelling/screaming it was so bad 😨 DO THIS THING - AS I SAID BEFORE KEVIN G ERASURE LIKE THERE IS NO WAY THEY HAD THE MATHLETES CHAMPIONSHIP WITHOUT SINGING 😭

About the actors

Don’t Quote me on this but am pretty sure only 2 of them are actually theatre actors?? Ik both Jaquel and Renee have been on Broadway but before the movie cast was announced I had no clue who the others were? And I tried to find theatre credits but there were literally none 😭

I saw a clip the other day of Tina Fey telling us all to stop complaining abt it, cuz she got a killer cast, and sure yea they were a good cast but if you’re gonna make a musical movie, especially based on such an iconic musical, actually make it a good musical?? Actually whilst I’m on this topic I just wanna say the advertising for this movie was so shit, like they didn’t even advertise it as a musical?? And so many people went without knowing it was 💀

Tbh although I’m not trying to say the cast was bad, I just wish they casted actual broadway actors, cuz it would’ve been sm better (for example, WSS 2021 - most of the cast were bway/theatre actors n it is one of the best musical movies I have ever watched)

At this point I would’ve preferred the og bway cast 💀 Like Idc that they’re all 30 or whatever 😭 Personally, I prefer proshots to movie musicals anyways, due to the fact that we get to see it on stage, so ee don’t have to miss anything, and if they really wanted to do this properly they should’ve just gone for a proshot 🤷‍♀️ But that’s just my opinion based on what I’ve seen!

Masculine and Non-Feminine Pink Academia

While this is a very "feminine" space, as someone who isn't always a girl (she/they btw!), I understand the struggle of being a non-girl and wanting to find your place among the girlies. Hopefully I have some useul ideas for you, ranging from non-feminine women, men, and nonbinary inspiration.

Characters

Non-Feminine Women - Cady Heron, Mean Girls. I know a character from the girly movies Holy Trinity seems like a weird start, but of course, Cady's journey is one if jumping in too far and losing her tomboyish nature. But, at the end, her style reflects the positive aspects of her journey by being a better-fitting and a little bit more trendy, but the outfit is still just a casual top and jeans which doesn't necessarily have a gendered association. And, of course, she's an iconic academic character as a mathlete.

-Connie Maheswaren, Steven Universe. Connie's style evolves from a pretty billowy dress to a cute button-up and shorts. Connie loves reading, studying, and swordfighting and has a style that can go between masculine and feminine.

-Spinelli, Recess. I'd say most people who know me know that I am the way I am because of the Ashleys, but Spinelli is good inspo too. She's only an academic in secret, but her over-sized t-shirt as a sort-of dress toes the line between gender presentation. It's dress-like, but probably also a hand-me-down from her older brother, and is shapeless enough for the androynous=shapeless trend.

- Elizabeth Bennet, Pride and Prejudice. Even as a fancy lady in the regency era, she's still more likely to be found on romps in the mud, even if that'd be 'most unladylike.' Personally, if I were in charge of a modern interpretation, I think she'd be a dungarees/overalls kind of girl. One of my favourite interpretations is in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries where she's a tech intern.

Men - Nick Young, Crazy Rich Asians. I love a man passionate about his culture, preserving history, and snazzy dressing. Since he's richer than God,he does dress like Daddy's Little Rich Boy, but it's a classic look for a reason.

- Todd Anderson, Dead Poets Society. SO, DPS is a stable of Dark Academia, but I'm borrowing Todd for the Pink girlies because he felt overlooked for most of his life, and then discovered his romantic, poetic side. It feels like a very Pink theme to me.

-Ryan Evans, High School Musical. Ryan and Sharpay had their style game at maximum for all three movies, and Ryan truly is a bright pink-wearing king who co-ordinated down to a hat- the only person who can get away with a fedora, except, like, Perry the Platypus.

Nonbinary Characters - Frankie Stein, Monster High. The new version of Frankie now uses they/them pronouns! Their presentation in the new movie seems to go between feminine and androgynous, and their style is like school uniform punk- related, I think Frankie would totally have the Vivienne Westwood pin.

-Aziraphale and Crowley, Good Omens. In the Good Omens 'verse, angels and demons don't actually have gender, and Aziraphale and Crowley's looks are jut personal to them. Aziraphale has a flamboyant, cream-toned masculine vibe, while Crowley's dark wardrobe changes gender presentation with him. They embody the abolish gender vs make more dynamic.

- Cal, Sex Education. I'm totally late to the Sex Education party, so I don't know much about them, but it is so exciting to see what looks like good rep in a high school setting, because I wish I'd had more of that when I was in school!

Fashion and Presensation

So, the classic PA sillhouette is, of course, the shirt under a jumper, a pink plaid skirt, tights or stockings, pink high heels, and decorate with pearls. Let's see what we can do to make this less stereotypically feminine.

- Plaid trousers/pants exist and are wonderful. An easy find is always a plaid or similar-patterned paperbag trousers- which I think can be used to alter your shape at the hips, if you want to do that. - Longer or more kilt-style skirts tend to have a more gender-neutral or masculine association compared to their shorter counterparts. - Secret trousers!! These are my favourite thing- a pair of trousers/pants that look like a skirt when standing still feels like the best of both worlds to me. -As mentionned with Spinelli, an oversized t-shirt or shirt worn like a dress can create a shapeless, androgynous sillhouette if so disired, or be cynched in with a belt to add another dimension to an outfit.

Foals: Life is Yours — vibrant-sounding but thinner in scope

A review by Ludovic Hunter-Tilney for Financial Times [link] The British indie rock band turn their attention to rebirth with their seventh album

Foals’ origins lie in British indie rock from the late 2000s, a time when bands such as themselves, alt-J and Everything Everything emerged with a twisty musical sensibility that seemed to be formed as much by hyperlinks as conventional verse-chorus-verse structures. This was an era when jumping between websites went by the benign name of internet-surfing, not today’s pathologies of screen addiction and attention theft. Busy, clever indie music that traversed genres and time signatures took place against the backdrop of an online world of endless choice. The approach carried the risk of over-elaboration. But Foals kept a tight hold over their various influences, from Afrobeat and Steve Reich to post-punk and dance music. Their debut album, 2008’s Antidotes, had a driven rhythmic energy, fuel for their determination to find a way through the maze. The combination of muscularity and different angles was epitomised by the title of one of their earliest songs, “Mathletics”. Antidotes established them as indie-rock big-hitters, a status they have maintained over subsequent releases. In 2020, they won a Brit award for best group, which followed the release of their first UK number one album, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost — Part 2. It was the second instalment of a double-hander that addressed big topics of climate ruin and social breakdown. Now they turn their attention to rebirth with their seventh album, Life Is Yours. Its theme of new beginnings is partly a product of necessity. The Oxford-formed band are now a trio following the separate departures of two members since 2018. But there is also a concept at play here, a zeitgeisty intuition that the world is ready to let its hair down and roar back to life following the cloistered days of the pandemic. “This has the potential to be an iconic year, and I’d love this record to be the soundtrack to that,” frontman Yannis Philippakis told NME in January.

Unfortunately, 2022 hasn’t played nice with his hopes. The location for the video of “2am”, the single of Life Is Yours, illustrates the bleak direction present times have taken: it was filmed in Kyiv a month before Russia’s invasion. The upbeat energy of their new songs arrives in a world that has reawakened from Covid into a nightmare of war, economic turbulence, an ongoing pandemic and accelerating environmental degradation. Foals, alas, have backed the wrong horse.

Does Life Is Yours work as escapism instead? Its 11 tracks display a customarily high quality of musicianship, from Jack Bevan’s vibrant percussion and drumming to the gracefully darting guitar parts played by Philippakis and co-guitarist Jimmy Smith. The jittery punk-funk moves of their earlier work have been smoothed into a more fluid funk-rock. “2001” has a buttery disco groove, while “Wake Me Up” is a euphoric indie-dance anthem about seizing the day during which Philippakis chants about “dancing on the screens” and “deleting all the codes”.

If technology formerly underpinned their fast-moving musical imaginations, now it is portrayed as an enemy. But the thought isn’t really developed, so far as one can tell from vocals that are often hard to make out amid the layers of instrumentation and relentless rhythmic action. Vibrant-sounding but thinner in scope than their earlier work, the songs make for a solid accompaniment to better times that have so far failed to materialise.

Draculaura: mostly inspired by the haunt couture doll, but keeps the pigtails and boots. In my version, hemophage vampires and emotional vampires have different ear shape (so when I do Kieran you'll see)

Ghoulia Yelps: simple, geeky clothing you would see on a future champion mathlete. Sadly her and her team never made it to the competition, odd. And her head seems to have puntures, but from after the accident?

Deuce Gorgon: the son of medusa and a human?? Well that would explain his lack of golden wings and claws. Maybe he is compensating his half bloodness with a lot of snake imagery.

Gooliope Jellington: goop! Circus goop! Made in a lab with tons of luv and DNA from the blob, so she needs to sustain themselfs with random stuff, cause the goop eats all! The blob can shrink and growth as much as they like, cause it's all goop!

Abbey Abominable: I was so mad at the doll when I realized that she wasn't a hairy yeti, and even more at the show when they showed male yetis like, let the girl be hairy and tall! That's what being a yeti is all about! Also no longer ice powers cause that's weird, but she can have a "frigid aura"

Clawdeen Wolf: furry, lets just say it. But now with a purple and green combo cause it just works, what a fashion queen, what an icon! Her clothes are a fusion between her original and haunt couture outfit. Also a little pet peevee I have with many werewolf designs, why not make the tail with the same texture as the hair on the head? Unless its a wig I guess, but it just confuses me.

Idk who to draw next! We'll find out on the next episode!

Camillio Martinez

My boy Cam.... He’s memorable despite having a lot of cringey dialogue he comes off more as a cringey, try-hard, social-climbing but ultimately loyal and understanding guy. Best thing about him is his immaturity.  Worst thing about him is his immaturity. I like the dynamic of Lee Ping making friends and foes and peeling back the layers of A. Nigma High. Cam as a character is a good representation of that because he’s your og, known-forever, predictable as monkey hypnosis bestie but Lee learns new things about him throughout the show and he learns new things about himself.  Cam is a protective big bro and he drinks Respect Women juice. He has repressed bisexual energy. Also he is the definition of a Short King.

Tina Kwee: Tina grew on me from my first impression of her as your colour-by-numbers Lois Lane mild mannered crush character. I think I started really liking her character when she and Cam improvised that Cameo and Tina-ette bit to get past Lynch. Tina’s a subtler character but all the details are so endearing. The Lee Ping desktop background, talking to herself in the third person, average older-sib syndrome, absolutely participating in the never-ending slap-fight one-upmanship with Chaz. She needs that scoop and she definitely forgets that she's like, a fuckign baby who needs to eat some breakfast and download a game or two on her phone. Also her iconic protective streak during the Research Frenemies arc. She has caffeinated gremlin energy. Only critique: not enough character interactions.

Lee Ping: Lee didn't come off as just another flavour of generic teenboy RebelTM character. He's a very grounded and well-written mc, but with enough meme-able moments to keep the fandom burning with that classic 2013 era energy. He tries to enter 'rad' as a password 3 times before giving up, but he can also math circles around the best mathlete. He has an armband tattoo he just assumed was a birthmark. Friend of cats and Tazzes, likes Lance Pinto movies and 'doesn't do' cliques. This is the guy that seems to borrow a pencil from you every single day and you wonder if he has ever purchased one, unbeknownst to you (and him) he has a pencil from every kid in school under his bed. Lee comes into the series smug asf and look at what the creators did, he has anxiety now. Lee spends most of the series crouching in shadows, hiding in vents and running away from shit and still manages to blunder into badass moments, get in a smug one-liner or dunk on Biffy. Critique: his character design hurts my eyes (red and green?!?!?) and we don't get a lot of his internal monologue aside from for exposition.Lee has memelord energy.

Chaz Moneranian / Li Ping / Kimmie/ Cyrus 

These three tie for 4th for being iconic characters that I love every time they're on screen even though I don't know enough about them to find them totally endearing. It's the fanon for me. 

Chaz: Insecure, narcissistic asshat who unabashedly loves drama and mess, queer-coded, possibly has super-human speed and is chronically disliked. No idea why this character was so relatable to me.....

Li Ping: It's the voice-acting for me, sometimes he goes really pitchy and every line read is unexpectedly awesome. He looks a lot like Lee and yet his character design is easy on the eyes. Unlike Lee who is genre-savvy and sarcastic, Li is the guy who sends you e-mails in all caps and with a signature with an embossed sword and an inspirational/ominous quote. Li takes this shit serious and WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING??? YOU HAVE CHOSEN DEATH. The fact his character backstory involves some serious Fridge Horror and he alludes to having committed and being capable of Actual Atrocities...and his best friend is a pet snake named Priscilla. Power of God and Anime On My Side energy.

Kimmie: The stoic Alpha-Bitch who raps about a cringey restaurant named after her, has dumb phone apps and an actually Evil mom, the fact that Kimmie can smell a stunt or lie a mile off but had the entire illuminati operating out of her foyer and didn't even notice. She's so mysterious that I think it made the fandom froth every time we saw a peek into her weirdly sad world. Also her interactions with Lee as the deadbeat dad of her ro-baby lmao.

Cyrus: He’s funny every time he’s on screen. It’s the perpetual smile for me. He has no-thoughts-head-empty energy.

Biffy: I honestly wasn't sure who to put for this last spot. It was crazy close because I wanted to put Jenny here. I think ultimately the one with more screentime won out. Also Biffy gets bonus points for being a character I initially disliked and then won me over. Classic subverted bully trope but without the unfortunate implications of characters like Buford from P&F. Biffy felt like a fully-rounded character and bonus points for looking at the cake and being like :0 (ancient meme)Biffy can't wait til he can legally get a tattoo but he would probably ask whoever was there with him to hold his hand when he's getting it. Biffy is 7 ft tall and hides in a bathroom stall to hear a teen rock band practice. I like when he advocates for Lee's well being and I like when that pits him against Cam and Holg (og friends vs new friends and the duality of man etc. etc.). Bif is the character most likely to call Lee up just to check in, after a day of getting threats, 'heads up!'s, and 'YOU GOTTA GET HERE FAST BRO's. Bif has ABSOLUTE UNIT energy

worst quality:  spongy. i don't think this is an inherently bad thing, and i also do it, but she seems to absorb the personalities of whoever she's around. just a little bit and at least in canon. like, in the beginning, its just her own true personality because she's been pretty isolated for most of her life. then she meets janis and damian and aaron and picks up bits of them. and then when she gets involved with the Plastics she morphs into one of them over time. i don't think she's as guilty as people necessarily make her out to be, but i do wholeheartedly agree that she does need to acknowledge and apologize for the problematic shit she does. which, luckily, we get to see bits of :)

i have a mathletes trophy (lol) and two little owls as a placeholder until i get a statue of Lady Athena--along with a copy of the Illiad, the Odyssey, Oedipus, and my first greek mythology book from elementary school.

on Lord Apollo’s side there’s a metronome, a harmonica from my grandfather, a little golden guitar that also kind of looks like a lyre, and a littlest pet shop swan that’s also from elementary school. i also have the Delphic Maxims listed on the wall next to the altar.
