- Her hair was starting to look like it did back in hope’s peak. It’s getting long and with no places to get a haircut, you offered to give her a buzzcut.

- Akane doesn’t like thinking too much, so she quickly accepted. It might be kinda cool to change up her hair since she’s kind of just had the same style for as long as she can remember.

- So when you got out the buzzer, she was a little nervous but also a little excited. Fresh new-but-also-almost-no haircut.

- Once you’re done, she finds her head to feel so much lighter. Now she can actually run around and bounce off things without her hair getting in the way! (Yeah, that means she was bouncing off the furniture in your house)

- She actually really loves her new hair cut! You’re definitely gonna get a lot of compliments for your work on her hair.

Chiaki

- She doesn’t outwardly appear to be bothered by her growing hair, but then again, she doesn’t always appear very outwardly bothered by most things. But her constantly blowing her bangs out of her face while she’s gaming tells a different story.

- Was pretty cool when you offered to buzz off her hair. She’s not super worried about a lot of things, and her hair isn’t really one of them, so she’s chill with it.

- She’s a little annoyed when you need her to keep her head straight when you’re doing her hair because she just wants to look down at her little handheld.

- But once you’re done, she likes running her hands over her now incredibly short hair. It feels funny.

- Now she can be matching with you once you shave your own hair :)

Hiyoko

- She will only listen to you and Mahiru, so it did take a bit of convincing for you to actually give her a buzzcut. She was saying it could cramp her style with being a traditional dancer, but what shows is she gonna perform in the middle of quarantine? None.

- So she eventually agreed if you’d do it too. (You were already planning on it anyway.)

- She was her usual cranky self when getting her hair buzzed off. She trusts you, but if you fuck this up—. Jk, all she wants is for you to be careful.

- She’s used to having a big banana of blond hair flopping around on her head, but now that’s it’s gone, she feels… cold.

- It’ll take a bit of time for her to warm up to her buzz cut, but might actually be kinda nice to not have to deal with her long-ass hair every day.

Ibuki

- You could see the roots of her hair. It was getting long. Like, almost unmanageable. Her hair may actually be a little damaged from how much she dyes it, so it might actually be a good idea to buzz it off so her hair can grow back healthier.

- She’s always doing weird things with her hair, and she’s kind of wanted to shave it for a while now, so when you mention it, she leaps at the chance to get her hair shaved. And it’ll be done by her partner! What luck!

- She watched with wide eyes as her long, black, white, blue and pink locks fell from her head. It was weird to watch. But her head feels so light now!

- Unfortunately she can’t head bang with the added effect of her hair anymore, but that’s the only thing she misses.

- She can’t stop looking at herself in the mirror and admiring your work with starry eyes. She gets very excited over things. It’s always funny to watch.

Mahiru

- Usually, Mahiru has a cute red bob, but now, it’s starting to get a bit long thanks to quarantine. She looks cute with long hair, but you suddenly thought maybe you could give her a buzz cut?

- She was apprehensive when you first brought it up. It took a little bit of convincing. Like with Hiyoko, she’d only do it if you did it as well. You were already gonna do it on yourself anyway >:)

- She’s used to already having pretty short hair, but it’s still pretty different once she’s left with only about half an inch left. Her head feels so much lighter but a bit colder.

- It’s a weird feeling that she’s gotta adjust to, but she feels kinda cute with your new matching hairstyles (since you promised you’d cut your hair too)

- Expect some photos taken of the two of you for memories of your ridiculous quarantine. Closed-cut heads are certainly gonna be an interesting memory.

Mikan

- Mikan’s hair is already a bit unruly, so it was getting even more unruly with quarantine. Some locks seemed to defy gravity, and her bangs began covering her eyes. She looks even more unruly than normal.

- So you ask if you can give her a crew cut, similar to your own that you were gonna do. She’s initially a little nervous because she’s probably had people purposely mess up her hair in the past, but you show her quarantine buzz cuts. You’d never want to purposely screw up Mikan’s hair.

- You weren’t really expecting her to agree, but she does! She’s nervous but she’s trying her best to be brave. She’s never had her hair cut like this. She trusts you to do it.

- Once it’s done, she opens her eyes again and… she actually kinda likes the look! Maybe this could be a chance for her to also grow out her hair again, kind of like a fresh start. She’s right to trust you.

Peko

- Peko usually has her hair up in braids, so it seems pretty easy to manage, but now she’s having a hard time seeing through her bangs. When her hair was out of its braids, that’s when it became an unruly beast. So why not chop it all off? :D

- She was surprised at your offer. She thought about it for a little, and decided she may as well. Hair does always grow back. And she has wondered what she’d look like with hair similar to Fuyuhiko’s.

- So you buzz her hair to be similar to Fuyuhiko’s. Even with the little patterns in it. She actually looks pretty good with the same haircut as Fuyuhiko.

- Her hair does feel much cooler now with very short hair now, but she kinda likes the look of it.

(She’d definitely send a photo of it to Fuyuhiko who’d probably scream, and wouldn’t be sure whether he’s flattered or terrified of his friend’s matching haircut)

Sonia

- Sonia usually has long, lovely hair, but you’ve noticed that it’s started getting slightly unmanageable because of the quarantine and no access to any hair dressers.

- Getting her to agree was very easy. She was incredibly eager to get her hair shaved off. She was already considering donating it! She’s been wanting to change it up for a while, so what better time than now?

- She was more than happy to have you be the one to shave it off! In fact, it surprised you a little bit how enthusiastic she was. Maybe she could donate the hair that she now wouldn’t be attached to.

- It’s a weird look for a princess, but she really likes it! When her hair grows back, she wants you to do other things with it!

(If she really wants to terrorize Kazuichi, she could probably send a photo of her short hair to him. He’d definitely scream.)

The sideblog isn’t ready, I [melody-of-scream] am not ready and the challange isn’t finished, but I just can’t hold back any longer, so I’ll just start by posting phase 1 only until I got phase 2 finished. Which takes forever with that many OCs.

What do they look like?

Allete: A lot like Eva Green, light skin colour, dark hair, blue-green eyes, tall, slender, full lips, from France.

Bel: A lot like Mariette Valsan, middle dark brown/Indian skin tone, brown eyes, under the right circumstances insanely beautiful… but her appearance changes based on the attitude of people towards her or humanity in general, she’s missing the little finger of her left hand though. Originally from heaven, then hell.

Cardia: Pale, red and black dyed hair, very dark eyes, short, stocky, curvy (on her belly too!), small hands, scars on her arms. From the Isle of the Lost.

Jo: Slightly tanned, light brown eyes that seem to glow slightly, very long brown hair, small nose, chubby cheeks, short, with a bad posture, from the US.

Damian: Slightly ashen skin tone with a hint of olive hidden beneath it and a hint of yellow over it since he smokes quite a bit, black, short hair, blue eyes, not exactly tall for a guy, rather thin due to a certain lack of physical activity, leads a pretty unhealthy lifestyle in general, dark rings under the eyes, thin lips… despite everything he’s still kind of attractive though, from the US of unknown heritage.

Deicida: Grey skin… like really silvery-grey skin, looking like metal, dark grey lips, white hair and golden eyes, much heavier than she looks. Middle tall for a teenage girl, slender… the back of her legs is pointed like a blade and as sharp – yes blade legs and grey skin, she is weapon forged by Hephaestus and given a soul and can turn back into her original sword from if needed. From… well Hephaestus’s forge.

Gabriele: A lot like Sonja Gerhard. Short, blond, slightly curly hair, grey-blue eyes, like a perfect little white skinned angel. From East Germany (DDR) when the country was still divided into DDR and BRD.

Jennifer: Naturally red, curly hair, deep green eyes, rather tall for a woman, comparably skinny, small chest, prominent cheekbones, slightly bigger nose, in her late forties, early fifties, still considerably pretty. Of Irish descent.

Ophelia: Dark, Arabic skin tone. Long dark brown hair, with three green dyed strands of hair, eyes so green they seemed to glow and strange green marks running down from the middle of her lower lid to half of her cheek. Naturally rather red lips, but even brighter lipstick, hourglass figure, slender fingers, unfortunately creepy laughter but sweet smile, freckles on her chest, 6’7, in her end twenties. Of Iranian descent.

Aquila: Think of Kat Dennings dressed fancy. Brown wavy hair, blue eyes, large chest, 5’3… the whole package. Usually dressed unassuming but tidy. Wears glasses to read. From… that would be too much of a spoiler, so let’s say the UK. Also her names a made-up fake as well.

Kayleigh: Assumed the form of black girl, rather dark skin tone, attentive eyes so dark brown they appear black, long, really long bright orange hair – says it’s natural, no one believes her, sly smirk, surprisingly pinkish lips, not very tall with little curves but not petit. Looks nothing like either of her sisters. From a place that is too much of a spoiler.

Loreley: Like Diane Kruger, straight, thin light blond hair, light blue eyes, pale lips, would be considered petit if she wasn’t a bit too tall for it. So pale and thin it’s close to making people worry. Often either dark rings under her eyes or red, slightly swollen eyes. She has lost quite some of the beauty (and weight) songs sing about. From Germany but that was a long, long time ago.

Lou: Very mixed heritage reflected in his skin colour – Latin-Arabic and a bit of white. Black hair but buzz cut, grey eyes, unassuming, sweetest and brightest, toothy smile and perfectly straight teeth, slightly crooked toes, moderate height and weight. Tries to stay fit… but music and Aunt Isabella’s food are not helping. Long, slender fingers. Born in the US.

Phionee: White skin, not like a human white skin tone but white-white. Humanoid Alien. Dark pink, sharp eyes, slightly pointy ears and a long, slender tail that ends in a sharp point [kind of similar to Nightcrawler’s], feet that are a bit more claw like, white, straight hair usually worn in a pinned updo. Eyebrows that give her a snarky expression, light pink lipstick and pink eyeshadow, very cold skin and since she’s from an ice planet it’s usually to warm everywhere for her, so she wears short shorts and cropped tank tops when others are about to freeze off some parts. Still manages to make a point by wearing Ravenger red. Thin but athletic build. From the Usmin planet Sikon.

Rachel: A lot like Natalina Maggio. Caucasian but likely with a southern European heritage. Green eyes with golden speckles. Thin, straight, dark brown hair. Unassuming figure but well-trained and a bit muscular for a woman. Thin face, thin lips, piercing gaze. Always seems to show a slight frown. Huge ban tattoo on her left side since she was a baby. Not very tall. Often dark fingertips from old ink and such. Found on the doorstep of a hunter family – Westons – when she was still a baby.

Daniel: Light skinned but with a bit of a tan, short, curly, brown hair. Light blue eyes. Full lips, stubbles all the time. Tall, obviously well-toned and thoroughly fit body but a bunch of scares hidden beneath his clothes. Always seems to have an amused expression and sparkling eyes. Rachel sometimes calls him “Disney Prince” because he’s the pretty of the two of them. Youthful looks even though he is in his late thirties. From an hunter family which has been doing their job in the US for generations.

Skadi: A Jotun goddess and born frost giant. Very tall with a swirling intricate pattern on her skin. Pure white eyes and hair and whitish lips. Strong and sturdy but athletic build. Full lips… and with a human form magic and living among the gods of Asgard allowed her to take on. Still kind of tall, very pale with a bluish touch with slightly bluish lips, pale blue eyes and a lot of long, full-bodied, wavy hair that she dyes black to not stand out so much. There is something rough and wild about here that tends to draw people in and push them away at the same time. From Thrymheimr and/or Asgard.

Mariana: A lot like a slightly younger Morena Baccarin with half-short hair. Black hair, warm brown eyes, rather light skin tone but still noticeably a Latina. Thin lips, a bit bigger ears, 32 years old, with surprisingly long legs. Has a nice smile but a tendency to frown due to bad decision-making. From Brazil currently living in the US with a work visa.

Jason: Like Seth Green – just google him, like that. 5’3 short, green eyes, ginger hair and beard, mole under his left eye, the best and worst smirk, more buff than Seth Green though. Small/Short power package. From the US and of Scottish and Polish heritage.

Vanessa: Kind of shortish, with a pale skin with a golden undertone, slightly prominent nose and chin, small ears, bilious green eyes and ash brown hair. Kind eyes. Hints of being a bit stout but working against it constantly. Very small feet and rather small hands. An unsuitable mean smirk. Inside and outside of the school day she can usually been found barefooted. From Wales.

Cain: Soft facial features – a bit of a baby face – broad nose, narrow eyes the lightest blue imaginable. Round face, slightly tanned skin, short dark hair, full lips. Well-built but not very tall… in the form he got from one half of his parents. The other one granted him golden and black scales and rough golden and black skin, gills on the side of his cheeks, the same broad nose and narrow eyes of the lightest blue imaginable, but his features seem less soft like this. Oh and of course a golden fish tail. Lavish and to show off, he’s considered too flashy to be pretty by his mother’s people where he grew up.

Any illnesses/disorders/disabilities…?

Cain has BPD. Vanessa has a well-hidden but not specified anxiety disorder. Mariana is rather emotionally instable without an explanation so far… don’t know if that counts. Damian has a heart condition. Skadi is dyslexic but you can bet the goddess won’t tell anyone. Rachel has ADD and so has Lou. Bel is missing the little finger of her left hand. Cardia has gotten past self-harming tendencies and Mariana was thought to have narcolepsy for the longest time… until they found out it has to do with her mutation and an inability to control her power. And do Deicida’s blade legs count and the fact that human emotions confuse her? Not like on the autistic spectrum though just because she hasn’t had to do much with them before and is still learning.

Who’s your favourite?

That’s not fair *whines*, they are all my kids!! Skadi and Ophelia are always high on the list but always rivalled by the OC or one of the OCs from the fandom I’m just in the most.

Who is most like you?

??? There is a bit of me in every OC I make… but I try it to never be too much. However… Vanessa maybe? She’s probably the oldest of them and the most like I’m when it comes to looks. But personality vice… I’d like to think Jo maybe or Cardia.

Do you ship any of the characters you’re talking about here?

Yes. Some but very few with canon characters mostly it’s just a thought though nothing I would insist or necessarily talk about. And I ship Rachel and Daniel with each other ~ it’s difficult though.

Hello, I always enjoy the work on this Tumblr. It's informative, interesting, and satisfying. Anyway, being an Ne dom like yourself, do you have any tips to not be overwhelmed by Ne a.k.a. How to Train Your Ne? I admit there are times when the ideas are buzzing and I yearn for stimulation then I become drained to the point of being physically tired.

Good timing, since I was just reading about Si-grips last night and realizing I basically live in one six months out of the year. :P

I’m not sure exactly what you mean, so I’ll cover all the bases I can think of.

There’s pretty much four stages in my life:

Ne-dom Extraordinaire: this is when you are the unbeatable monarch in your field, when you are on such a roll that not only do you finish your project ahead of the damn deadline, you went ahead and did sixteen other magnificent things that day too, just because your brain was on such a rush of SO MANY IDEAS. For example: you felt good about finishing your essay, so you wrote six movie reviews, four e-mails, 26 blog posts, and worked on your book to boot. And then you went to bed with a smile on your face because damn, I’m so fine.

Ne-dom Uninspired: this is when you feel “meh.” Not awesomesauce, not the lowest of the low, just plain MEH. Meh for a Ne-dom equals: semi-bored, semi-uninspired, semi-annoyed about it. Now, a sane person on this day goes and watches 24 episodes of ALIAS in a row to chill. Me, I FORCE myself to be ‘creative.’ And because I’m generally good at what I do, it comes out fine. Not knock your socks off stupendous, not awful, not even average, just fine. But it feels like dragging my brain through a cheese grater and I go to bed mad that my Ne-brain was lazy as hell today. Like, it’s supposed to be AMAZING all the time!!! What’s up with this?!

Ne-dom Bored-as-Hell: generally, this happens when your life is stagnant, or you are stuck on the same god-awful project for weeks, or your friends have not spoken to you in days, and you are so bored you can hardly stand it, but NOTHING appeals to you. You crave something, but don’t know what it is. You drag yourself through the work / school day like a fish on dry land, you scope the depths of depression, you maybe force yourself to do stuff, but it’s a clear indication that your Ne is STARVING TO DEATH. You must feed it. How? That’s up to you. Get in the car and drive. Go hang out with someone. Start learning something new. Read a book that you know you’ll hate, and blow your own mind by loving it. Try something totally, radically different.

Don’t be like me, and dye your hair purple and cut into a punk rock style. Although, God knows I looked adorable.

Ne-dom Work-a-Holic: also known as tunnel vision, also known as inferior Si grip, also known as the perfect way to make yourself exhausted at the end of the day. Picture a nice normal Ne being a freight train barreling through a tunnel at 976 miles per hour. Now picture a peasant maiden (or peasant lad, if that’s you’re thing) running out onto the tracks, and holding it in place for about 15 hours. It grinds to a halt, its wheels start to smoke, and the peasant maiden/lad is inching forward at, oh, about 6 miles per hour. Fast by her standards, slow by yours. Now imagine that’s what happens to your Ne, when you develop tunnel vision. All that power, going nowhere fast. Imagine the tremendous energy that just ground to a halt. The creeping subconscious despair of the engineer. You are both the peasant maiden/lad and the freight train. See the problem? You are ripping yourself apart. How’s that peasant maiden/lad going to feel at the end of the day?

Yup. Exhausted.

Now, what if that peasant maiden does this day after day for about a week?

Exhausted. Mental exhaustion, from holding back the train, forcing Ne to stay on one topic, or focus on “boring” things for days on end. Where’s the fun? Where’s the zany? Where’s the sarcasm and jokes and random connections? Hello, inferior Si. Obsessive compulsive, aren’t you? Fixated. BAD.

How to Train Your Ne:

1) Give yourself permission to stick to one idea for awhile.

I get it. You will have thousands of great ideas in a single lifetime, or maybe even a week. If you follow all of them right now, you will never finish anything. Do what I do: think about them, ponder them, don’t let them get too developed, and write down the ones you want to hold onto, put them in a jar, and… walk away with the biggest, shiniest, most exciting idea you just had. The others will keep. Let them stew in their juices. Focus on THIS IDEA.

2) Reward yourself for finishing things.

If you want to accomplish something, give your Ne what it wants – a challenge, and a reward. I used to motivate myself through “boring” tasks by setting time deadlines and writing like a bat out of hell, or dividing the task up into separate shorter parts that I can cross off after I do them. That shows me I am making progress. Right now, I’m sitting next to a half-crossed-off list of chapters in my book, which I am proof-reading / editing. Each time a pink line goes through someone’s name, I know I’m THIS MUCH CLOSER to finishing. THIS MUCH CLOSER to starting a NEW project. THIS MUCH CLOSER TO THAT PIECE OF CHOCOLATE I PROMISED MYSELF.

Ahem.

3) Accept that you cannot be at 110% all the time.

This may be hard for you to hear, but you’re a normal human being. You need sleep. You need rest. You need food. You need days off, and dates, and to go places, and be with people, and do things other than your job or your school or writing or whatever it is that occupies 90% of your time. Those normal things that a sensor can do without much fuss, wear you out. Tedious details wear you out. Planning wears you out. Keeping track of things wears you out. The temptation when this happens is to under-estimate what you, as a low Si, needs – which is a break. You tend to way overestimate what you can do in a single week, and sometimes you get way too much on your plate… so, if you know about things in advance that are going to “drain” your Ne, because it requires other, lower functions to be heavily used in your stack, plan to limit your interaction with those functions in excess of your responsibilities.

In other words, if you (me) have to do a bunch of tedious line-editing at work, it is not a good idea for me to come home and do… a bunch of tedious line-editing on my novel at the same time. That’s all Te/Si stuff.

Ne-stuff is… new ideas, new people, new philosophies, reading things that excite your mind and imagination and help you see things in a different way, or watching something new, or going somewhere where you can just be yourself. Your Ne cannot run on full power all the time, especially when you’re trying to hold back the freight train – so give yourself permission to take time off.

4) Pace yourself.

This piggybacks on the above, but as a Ne-dom, you way over-estimate how much you can do physically. Things like going places, driving for hours, being in crowds, walking long distances, etc., are tiring to someone with minimal sensing. Ne-doms need down time, to process their experiences. You are an introverted extrovert. Remember that, and give yourself down time. Try not to be out and about 24/7. But don’t stay home all the time either. That’s a cesspool of Ne-draining boredom waiting to happen.

5) Either do it right now or write it down.

My usual pattern is: get a good thought about 10pm. Then springboard into another idea. Then zip over that way for more ideas. I lay there, staring at the ceiling, telling myself to go to sleep, while thinking about everything I should talk about, investigate, or do in the morning. By morning, of course, either the ideas are all gone or I have lost any motivation to do them. Some of my best work is from dropping everything and doing it RIGHT NOW. Strike while the iron is hot, my dander is up, whatever. Some of my best short stories or articles came from getting up at 5am and pounding the keyboard. So, do it NOW… or write it down. If you write it down, you won’t have to try and remember it (also a chore for Ne).

The best things you can do for your Ne are the following:

Accept that this is who I am, and it’s okay.

Realize that mundane or tedious tasks drain your Ne

Let your mind wander

Give yourself permission to fantasize

Reward periods of the mundane with fun activities

Never let a week go by without planning something ‘fun’

Stimulate yourself with constant NEW things (books, movies, music)

Read a wide variety of things on a continual basis

Give yourself challenges and deadlines to beat

Make sure they are SHORT-TERM (you cannot stay too long)

Always have something in the immediate future to look forward to

How COVID Colors The Salon Experience

LOVELAND, Colo. — Blush Beauty Bar hair salon had been closed 48 days, a consequence of stay-at-home orders to stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But last Tuesday, the shop in this city of nearly 80,000, about 50 miles north of Denver, was finally reopening after the orders had been partially lifted on May 1.

It was booked solid its first day — and for each day the rest of the month. After seven weeks of isolation, it seems people desperately want to get their hair cut.

Still, as Colorado attempts a soft reopening, the three-person staff has had to adjust to a new way of doing business. Even before the salon opened its doors Tuesday, staffers had to rearrange its interior, eliminating the seating in the waiting area, and shifting the front counter to the side, allowing one customer at a time to wait 6 feet away in a spot marked with a blue taped X.

In the final minute before the salon reopened, stylist Diamond Herrera, 22, and receptionist Desi Orr, 19, tested out new no-touch forehead thermometers as owner Mindy Bodley, 40, reminded them of the new procedures.

As child care facilities, tattoo parlors and business offices reopen here, they must navigate new government guidelines designed to balance a restart of the economy against the possibility of reigniting the pandemic, all without scaring away customers. Indeed, a late April survey by Healthier Colorado and The Colorado Health Foundation found that 64% of Coloradans support a policy of staying home to slow the spread of the coronavirus, even if that means businesses will remain closed.

At 10 a.m., Orr stepped outside to meet their first customer, Amy Eldridge, 45, who had called from her car to announce her arrival. Orr used the new thermometer to confirm Eldridge didn’t have a fever, and then checked whether she had brought a face mask. Customers can also purchase a cloth one for $10 when they arrive.

“Have you been sick in the last 14 days?” Orr asked her. “Have you been around anyone who has been sick in the last 14 days? Do you have any flu-like symptoms?”

Replying no to all three, Eldridge was allowed inside. But the first glitch emerged when Orr realized the door had locked behind her. It was part of the new protocol: No walk-in customers are allowed, so the door stays locked.

Once inside, Eldridge was asked to wash her hands before sitting down in the black leather salon chair, placing her purse and keys into a plastic box beside her.

“So how are things?” Bodley asked her as she prepared to cut Eldridge’s hair.

“They’re good!” Eldridge replied.

And at least for the moment, it all felt familiar. She had made the appointment seven months earlier and now her strawberry-blonde hair had reached down to the middle of her back. Eldridge couldn’t have known last fall that the salon would close down for seven weeks due to a never-before-seen virus that would shut down the nation’s economy and keep most people sheltered at home and desperate for a haircut.

“I’ve worked from home for 15 years, so for me this hasn’t been a big change. And I only get my hair cut twice a year,” Eldridge said. “But at the same time, I get so excited about my appointments.”

Eldridge has known Bodley for more than a decade, which removed any fears of coming to the salon.

“I have total trust in Mindy, and not just for my hair,” she said, as Bodley went to mix some hair dye for her. “I know she always has her customers’ safety in mind. She wouldn’t do anything to compromise her customers or her business.”

Soon after, Macall McFall, 26, arrived to get her long brown hair colored before her graduation from an occupational therapy program next week.

“We’re having a virtual graduation,” McFall said, with a note of disappointment.

The Blush experience, where a visit can cost $150 or more, is still the same pampering extravagance it has always been, with a few minor tweaks. Both the customers and the stylists must wear masks the entire time, and Bodley and Herrera work in hot-pink rubber gloves they previously used only for messy jobs like dyeing.

They no longer offer beverages to customers and won’t sit next to them to chat as they wait for the dye to set. The salon is no longer taking glamour photos of clients sporting their new looks amid special lighting and backdrops. And they can fit in fewer appointments per day given the new safety steps.

It all was an adjustment for both stylist and customer.

“I feel like I can’t see,” Bodley said at one point as the mask rode up while working on Eldridge’s hair. “It’s sort of important to my job.”

The COVID pandemic colored all aspects of the experience including the friendly banter at the salon. Instead of complimenting a customer’s blouse or shoes, Herrera admired McFall’s blue-patterned face mask. “It’s so cute!”

The women shared their quarantine stories and updated one another on Netflix shows they had binge-watched at home: from “Waco” to “Dance Moms” and, of course, “Tiger King.” There was a broad consensus that Carole Baskin had killed her previous husband.

Blush has been open for four years at its 4th Street location, just off the city’s main drag. Bodley has a loyal customer base as evidenced by the “Best Salon in Loveland” certificates, awarded by readers of the local newspaper, hanging on the wall. Still, once the virus appeared in the U.S. and made its way to Colorado, business had started to slow.

“Our numbers have been down this year,” Bodley said. “You never know what people will be scared of, but the beauty industry, hair, is usually a recession-proof business.”

At first, she didn’t know what to make of the slowdown, even as many of her friends were starting to stockpile toilet paper, hand sanitizer and flour and preparing for a lockdown.

“I prepared for Y2K,” Bodley recalled thinking. “I am not preparing for this.”

But by March, customers were canceling appointments. Phone alerts would buzz in the middle of haircuts, informing customers their child’s school was closing or some other routine aspect of their family’s life was shutting down.

Then on March 18, Bodley learned the state was shutting down nonessential businesses. She finished with the client she had in her salon at the time, squeezed in her best friend for one last appointment, and then closed up shop. She locked the door and took the salon’s last three rolls of toilet paper home with her.

Bodley’s husband orders beer for a liquor store, which was deemed an essential industry in Colorado, so he continued to work. The dog supply store Bodley owns next to the salon was able to shift to online sales. And she did receive a $2,000 Economic Injury Disaster Loan. But she still has rent and bills to pay.

“I am relieved to be back working,” she admitted. “This month will be a push. We have to cover May and June.”

Besides the restaurants and coffee shops that shifted to takeout services to stay open during the closure, most of the other retail businesses remained closed even though the state was slowly reopening.

“It’s a ghost town,” Bodley said. “I live on this street and I’ve never had so much parking.”

Still, the first day back was all smiles, even if they were hidden behind face masks; a hint that life could return to some semblance of pre-pandemic patterns, even if so much of the future remains clouded.

“I’m ready for Marshalls to open,” Bodley said. “I miss the people, but I didn’t really miss working. I thought, ‘How are we surviving?’ It’s because nothing is open for me to spend money on!”

Eldridge agreed.

“Our checkbook has seen some serious healing,” she said.

As she trimmed inches off Eldridge’s hair, Bodley admitted that “cutting hair in gloves is not cool. We already know I can’t see.”

Herrera had similar challenges as she dried McFall’s hair.

“I’m hoping it’s dry,” she said. “I can’t feel.”

But those hurdles were a small price to pay.

“I’m just happy to be here,” McFall said as she checked the new hue of her long hair in the mirror. “I love it! It looks so good!”

She moved to the counter to pay her bill, stretching her arm as far she could to hand Herrera her credit card to try to maintain the proper distance.

When McFall left, Herrera sprayed disinfectant on the chair, the counter and the plastic bin that had held her personal items. She wiped down the hand mirror her client had held. In other times, it would seem odd, almost insulting, to take such measures.

But the pandemic has altered nearly every part of normal life, even something as routine as a haircut, and nobody knows for how long.

“This could be our new normal,” Herrera said.
