"K" stands for King... of Terror - Pt.2

«If we think about his audacity and the fear he instills especially on the aristocrats he robs (but also about the masks he uses to carry out the thefts), then he took a lot from Giussani sisters' Diabolik, who also inspired Paperinik, so much so that I could define Fantômius and Dolly Paprika as the "Diabolik and Eva Kant of Duckburg".» Marco Gervasio (HERE's the full interview if you wanna check it out... mind you it's in italian, sorry ^^")

As I mentioned in the previous post, who's more akin to Diabolik (starting from his look with the very characteristic V shaped hairline) is Paperinik's source of inspiration: Fantômius, known internationally as Fantomallard.

Romano Scarpa gives us a first glance at Fantômius (actually Gladstone in a costume) in "Paperinik alla riscossa" by Guido Martina.

Duckburg's gentleman thief is named after Fantômas, the serial killer and elusive criminal mastermind created in 1911 by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, but he’s definetely more alike to Diabolik (just, not a cold blooded murderer, he’s not 😅).

Unlike Paperinik, Fantômius is a thief through and through; a masked criminal who terrorized the city of Duckburg in the 20s and who's first mentioned by Guido Martina in Paperinik's debut story "Paperinik il diabolico vendicatore" in 1969.

In Paperinik's second story, "Paperinik alla riscossa", we get to know Fantômius' girlfriend Dolly Paprika. The two are a homage by Guido Martina to the diabolical duo Diabolik/Eva Kant.

Lady Kant, whose name comes from Immanuel Kant (philosopher loved by Angela Giussani since school), is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world and she's the perfect specular match to Diabolik. Eva Kant's character is inspired by Lady Maud Beltham, Fantomas' lover who saves him from the guillotine in a way much akin to what happens to Eva and Diabolik.

A cunning, cold hearted and skilled thief, Lady Kant appears for the first time in 1963 in Diabolik third issue "L'arresto di Diabolik" and since then she's been Diabolik's perfect partner in crime and life.

When Marco Gervasio takes up Fantômius' character and starts the creation of his personal Gervasio-verse, he gives him an entourage of secondary characters which is heavily based on Diabolik's and he focuses heavily on Dolly, delving into her story and tightening even more the laces that bound her to Lady Kant.

But Gervasio also provides Fantômius with his personal institutional nightmare: Commissioner Pinko, obvious parody of Diabolik's nemesis inspector Ginko (and who is my favorite character, I just want him to win so badly every time!!! 😭😭):

Commissioner Alcmeone Pinko is certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed and it's easy game for Fantômius to elude him. Ginko, on the other hand, is totally another league.

Appearing alongside Diabolik in the first issue of the series, he's an upright policeman and a brilliant and canny detective who can easily stand up to Diabolik's genius. We are after all talking about a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes, pipe and all.

Ginko is Diabolik's good alter ego. He's actually so similar to Diabolik some speculate they may even be related, I for instance wouldn't be surprise if we end up finding out they're twin brothers like Fantômas and Juve! After all we don't know Diabolik's real name since it's unknown even to him, and Ginko's not the inspector real name either: he changed it for... reasons.

Tell me this is not a beautiful shot of commissioner Pin- err, I mean... inspector Ginko from 2022 "Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!" (I am not in any way shamelessly fangirling over the inspector 🙃)

Needless to say, despite his bravery and intuition, Ginko never manages to arrest Diabolik because, well (let's put it bluntly) he's too fair and honest. Ginko refuses to act outside the law in any way, and stubbornly wants to rely only on the police means... though he does sometimes use some gadgets confiscated to Diabolik and puts them to use with extreme astuteness (like when he cut two masks in two and joined the two halves to create a totally new face and actually managed to fool even Diabolik himself!)

But yeah, Diabolik's the title character... he just can't be arrested for good (just think of them as Mickey Mouse and the Phantom Blot, just with the Phantom Blot as the protagonist)! Anyhow, the respect between the two runs deeply.

"Hands up, Diabolik!"

Actually, Commissioner Pinko is not the first parody character of Ginko to appear on Topolino. In "Paperinik e il ritorno a Villa Rosa", our masked vigilante stumbles upon a newly appointed police inspector named Pinko "il Pallino" ("Pinco Pallino" in italian is an expression to define a random guy, I think in English it'd translate as "Joe Soap"), who might actually be a grandson of Fantômius' commissioner:

There’s one more main character in Diabolik comics who does appear in disguise in Fantômius’ stories. I’m talking about the duchess Altea of Vallenberg, secret love of Ginko, who appears for the first time in 1964 on Diabolik #22 “Il grande ricatto”.

Just like Altea, Pinko’s wife Adelaide Grimani comes from a noble family, venetian in this case. Unfortunately for Ginko and Altea, who could never be really together because of the social gap between the two (Altea’s the widow of the duke of Vallenberg, cousin of the king of Beglair), Pinko and Adelaide are happily married.

So!! How are we feeling about the last trailer?? New Diabolik?? Plot?? This scene???

We're feeling stuff, for sure!

I feel like they tested the waters in the first film and now they are letting loose.

I am happy that Eva is the one leading - the first movie was also like that, it's her story - and we are focusing on her adapting to her new life pretty seemlessly (wonfderful narrative decision).

I personally like Giaccomo Gianotti's Diabolik, I think he fits the pretty murder boy I expected to see - they did decide to go more with the recent comics looks, which I like more, tbh. He is making the role his own and does his best which is all I could have hoped for. He's also lucky that the budget stretched enough for him to have a better looking mask, lol. That or I wad so distracted by his eyes that I overlooked the mask big time - props to him for the eyes though, either way, he did a good job researching the chatacter.

I am also happy that there is more of a burning passion between Eva and Diabolik - that was the tone of their first years together - a burning passion, an intense love. It will obviously be tasteful and add just a bit of spice to the story, as it is a facet of their relationship.

The plot overall did not impress me much in the comics, but I think it will look great in a movie, especially that Eva is playing a more important part - again, this narrative decision opened up wonderful possibilities and her as a main character makes more sense.

The plot for Ginko, however, makes even more sense. They are making a trilogy, so the antagonist should be explored more. Add in some personality traits and someone who's not afraid to call him out on his bs and you get a very interesting character - much more than what we usually see in the comics, imo. I am not very into how Ginko is with Altea in the comics, his moral compass is a pain in the arse and I am glad she has the balls to make the hard decisions. I dislike it when he lords his morality over her, though. It does not last much, but the idea that she has to be forgiven is kinda ludicrous to me. As is the fact that she never questions his obsession.

So, over all, wonderful narrative choices and an improvement of lore with added spice. The actors are obviously wonderful, I am happy with everything so far.

I have to add that I also like the fact that the audiences surely have extended with the new arrivals. The more people talk about these movies the better.

Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!: un sequel dagli occhi giusti

La prima cosa che viene in mente quando si pensa a Diabolik sono i suoi occhi. Il re del terrore creato da Angela e Luciana Giussani ha un taglio inconfondibile. il suo sguardo di ghiaccio, che stretto nella sua tuta nera, è davvero la sua finestra sul mondo. E il suo biglietto da visita. Per girare un film su di lui è quindi fondamentale scegliere bene l'interprete. Non basta essere un bravo attore, ci vuole una presenza scenica adeguata. E, purtroppo, nonostante sia uno dei nostri talenti più puri ed evidenti, Luca Marinelli non aveva lo sguardo giusto. E, per sua scelta, nemmeno il fisico giusto, non essendosi sottoposto all'allenamento necessario, tanto da rendere evidente l'utilizzo di una controfigura nelle (poche) scene d'azione del primo film dedicato al personaggio dei fumetti. I fratelli Manetti hanno corretto in corsa il casting non felice, sostituendo l'attore con Giacomo Gianniotti, noto nel mondo per aver interpretato il dottor Andrew DeLuca in Grey's Anatomy. Possiamo quindi cominciare a parlare di Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco! con una buona notizia: gli occhi del re del terrore finalmente ci sono.

Sono gli stessi registi a metterlo subito in chiaro dalla prima scena, un colpo in notturna, di Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!. Atletico e letale, il ladro illumina il grande schermo guardando dritto in camera, come per dire: "adesso ci siamo!". Ci sono anche molti dei gadget di Diabolik, poco usati nel primo film, che usati con divertimento e nei momenti giusti, tutti gli arnesi, le botole, i muri nascosti sono una gioia per gli amanti del genere.

Anche se il vero protagonista qui non è né Diabolik, né Eva Kant, interpretata sempre da Miriam Leone. Questa seconda pellicola è, come suggerisce il titolo, il palcoscenico dell'ispettore Ginko di Valerio Mastandrea. Dolente, determinato e ossessionato dal ladro, una vera e propria nemesi, è l'uomo di legge a tenere su di sé il peso della parte centrale della trilogia. Legato a lui è anche un nuovo personaggio importante, la duchessa Altea di Vallenberg, interpretata da Monica Bellucci.

La grande novità di Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco! è, oltre al cambio di protagonista, l'aver reso il criminale una presenza più che un vero e proprio personaggio. C'è molto meno in scena, parla poco, è una minaccia che aleggia su Clerville. E un fantasma che infesta la mente di Ginko. I Manetti hanno fatto quello che Spielberg fa con il mostro di Lo squalo: il pericolo che rappresenta incombe sempre, anche quando non c'è fisicamente in scena.

Una buona intuizione, che, assieme alla maggior presenza di azione, contribuisce a dare la giusta atmosfera al film tratto dai fumetti delle sorelle Giussani. Per quanto riguarda il resto invece, se non avete amato il primo film, i fratelli continuano in modo coerente a portare avanti le loro scelte, anche quelle meno convincenti.

Se la recitazione sopra le righe e i dialoghi "da carta stampata" vi hanno spiazzato, sappiate che continuano. Stavolta però, forse perché già preparati, la scelta appare più naturale. Si è deciso di realizzare una trilogia in stile anni '60, nei ritmi e nelle interpretazioni. E così si continua. Non importa quindi che i colpi di scena siano prevedibili e le battute senza sfumature. A contare davvero è la costruzione di un mondo in grado di portare in tre dimensioni quanto visto negli albi. E, se non si cerca il realismo a tutti i costi, in effetti è proprio così.

I colori di Clerville diventano veramente veri soltanto quando uno li vede sullo schermo

Una volta accettato il "passo antico" di questo Diabolik, se si entra a Clerville con lo spirito più che con la testa si riesce a godersela. Girati tra Bologna, Torino e Milano, questi film (di cui il 2 e il 3 realizzati insieme, o, come dicono in Americani, "back to back") ricostruiscono un mondo che non c'è, fatto di lusso ed eleganza, di arredamenti e macchine bellissime. Tutto è luccicante e perfetto a Clerville. Proprio come i gioielli Armen, grazie a cui Ginko elabora un piano per catturare finalmente Diabolik. L'ispettore ormai pensa solo a lui, ragiona come lui ed è convinto di riuscire a prevederne le mosse.

Ma può qualcuno mai catturare davvero un'ombra che simboleggia la libertà, il fascino del proibito e del pericolo? Come dice lo stesso Valero Mastandrea, questo Ginko è ossessionato da Diabolik perché rappresenta tutto ciò che non è. E forse in fondo non vuole nemmeno prenderlo davvero. La caccia dà un senso alla sua esistenza, lo fa sentire vivo.

L'attore riesce a dare tutta questa complessità al suo uomo di legge, che diventa la figura più umana in una trilogia in cui tutto è definito in modo molto netto. "Niente viene prima di Diabolik: il sonno, l'amore o la morte" dice alla sua amata, la duchessa Altea, con cui ha una relazione segreta. E questa ossessione forse è la stessa dei registi, che, piaccia o meno, hanno curato tutto in modo maniacale. Dai titoli di testa costruiti sul modello di quelli di James Bond (la canzone scelta, Se mi vuoi, è di Diodato, che contribuisce all'ottima colonna sonora di Pivio e Aldo De Scalzi, che avevano fatto un gran lavoro anche per il primo film), ai costumi, agli oggetti di scena. Straniante invece la "fotografia speciale" soltanto sul volto di Monica Bellucci: è come se un filtro di Instragram perenne la seguisse, creando un effetto alla Occhi del cuore.

Non resta quindi che aspettare il terzo, e conclusivo, capitolo. Magari, con un colpo di scena degno del re del terrore, allo scatto finale tutto si incastrerà davvero alla perfezione, arrivando finalmente a dare forma al Diabolik che i fan del fumetto hanno sempre sognato. Sarebbe un gran colpo.

In conclusione Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!, il secondo capitolo della trilogia ispirata ai fumetti delle sorelle Giussani non ha paura del pericolo: cambia l'attore protagonista, passando da Luca Marinelli a Giacomo Gianniotti, e trasforma Diabolik in una presenza più che in un personaggio. Questo cambio funziona, perché Gianniotti ha gli occhi e la presenza scenica giusta. Tutto il resto invece è coerente con il primo film: nel bene e nel male. In Diabolik 2 entra poi in scena un nuovo personaggio: la duchessa Altea interpretata da Monica Bellucci, che contribuisce a rendere più umano l'ispettore Ginko di Valerio Mastandrea, il vero protagonista di questa pellicola.

I colpi di scena sono molto prevedibili.

Il "filtro di Instagram" che segue perennemente Monica Bellucci e non gli altri attori è straniante.
