This Ava, who sits in a void the size of herself, has never seen a sunrise. She hasn’t yet invented stars, through there is one close enough and important enough that she’ll have to, soon.

She’s weak, and small. A dim light too shy to shine but there, present as a cold shape in space, turning with her great metal wings casting no shadows. Not anywhere.

The light touches her, but not like that, not like a girl’s mouth and the hot wet progress of her tongue, down in the crease between thigh and oh god. fuck.

The light loves her maybe as much as that, as fervently but not as badly, lumens blushing over the white-tipped primaries, the mixed metaphor metacarpals of her body which is winged only in the sense that it soars.

They build satellites like this, in the afterimage of birds with wings that drink the light down the way you take a girl in your mouth. Ava’s not the same as them because so many are still cupped around Earth in a too-tight grip. Nothing is the same as it was.

Ava’s old. She’s got that NASA decrepitude to her – built to be beautiful by accident, like the Apollo Lunar Module with her odd legs, her aluminium body drinking down dust. Summer is definitely, undeniably, and undisputedly the boating season. Sure, you might use your boat throughout the rest of the year, but summer is when the experience comes to life. With clear skies and the sun shining bright, anyone would love to spend some time at sea or at lakes or in the ocean to cool themselves and experience fun adventures. Aside from doing fun activities in the water, you can finally put your aluminium plate boat to good use and even boast its beauty and power to your mates once you invite them to your boat for a mini party onboard or for a fishing excursion.

No matter how caught up you get with planning and mentally preparing yourself for your boating activities, you should never disregard safety and a little bit of maintenance work too. Having those things to keep in mind can help prepare your boat better so you’ll be assured that you will have the best time onboard.

So, whether this is your first summer on the water or you have been boating for decades, a few essential summer boating tips can always help you get more from the experience.

De-winterize Your Boat

Many boats sit unused on the harbour for three or more months before summer. This can cause some parts of the boat to rot and other rubber parts to dry from salt air and extreme temperature changes. In addition, fuel in the engine tank may break down, while moisture can lead to the corrosion of metal parts and electrical systems.

If the oil has been in the engine for months, consider draining it out and replacing it with fresh fluids. Old fuel can clog your engine components and possibly cause damage to your boat. Check all of the cables and hoses on your boat engine, including fuel and coolant hoses, and ensure they are tight and secure.

Prepare the rest of your boat as well. Make sure all the equipment you have are working properly. Clean your upholstery from dirt, grime, or dust. Clean your deck with an appropriate cleaner to avoid damaging your boat. If your boat has a self-draining deck, make use of it by washing your deck with water and soap to ensure that you’ve cleaned your boat well.

Bring Watersports Accessories

Depending on the kind of boat you own, adding a few water toys can make the experience more enjoyable for the whole family. You could look for a tube designed to be towed behind the boat, or even just some inflatables that can make it more enjoyable to swim off the side when the motor engine is off.

Be Mindful of  Water Traffic

One of the few disadvantages of summer boating is that everyone thinks of doing the same thing; which is doing boating adventures as well. Because of this, the amount of traffic on the water is high. The waterways can get as busy as a highway during rush hour traffic so be smart about when you choose to cruise. If you can’t help but boat around areas where there are a lot of people around, be aware of your surroundings and share the water. Pay attention to the people on the water and give other boats plenty of room. Don’t forget to adhere to the posted speed limit especially if you’re near shores, docks, or properties near the water.

Safety First Always

Given how busy the waterways become during the summer, plan ahead before going out for the day.

Make sure there are enough life jackets on board. Aside from being cautious for any emergencies that may happen, this is also required by law, and if you are pulled over by the coast guard by chance, you may receive a ticket if they find out you’ve not been storing life jackets onboard. And while we’re still on the topic of staying safe onboard, don’t forget to bring important devices such as a VHF radio to communicate with authorities and the Coast Guard who can offer you assistance when things go astray. A depth finder equipment to avoid running aground in shallow waters. A GPS device to help you navigate areas where you’ll be boating so you won’t get lost.

Don’t just focus all your energy on your boat. You also need to take care of your body as well. Fill a cooler with readily accessible water. In extremely hot weather, staying hydrated is critical! Plus there’s no greater feeling than quenching your thirst with a cold bottle of water.

Since it’s summer, the sun is shining its vast glory on anything under it. While being out under the sun can be beneficial and makes you feel better generally, long exposure to the sun can be harmful to your skin. And if you are aboard a boat without a canopy, it can be uncomfortable to stay in it for a long time. The UV rays from the sun can cause sunburns, rashes, discomfort, and even skin cancer. You don’t want any of those things to happen to you, do you? Remember to pack sunscreen or sunblock to keep your skin protected. Slab it on the areas of your body where it will get exposed to the sun and reapply it every few hours. ‍

Make it a point to cruise to new destinations with your friends this summer. Make new experiences with those you want to create memories with by trying new things and going to new places. Summer is all about going to new locations, and it should ideally become a yearly goal for you if you can.

I love this work, how it is hung and how it appears as though the work is falling, drooping. In terms of form - this work has the most similarities to my own practice. I imagine, because of the materials used as well as how it is installed, that this work would allow for a full body, almost sensory experience. Something that hasn’t been a main focus of mine, but an idea I have in the back of my mind as my work has developed in terms of installation, and use of materials.

Like myself, Frankovich works with some found materials, and has a wide collection of work including natural materials, vegetables, blanket sort of materials, drapery, etc. Medea is my favourite among Frankovich’s work - the installation aspect, as well as the cohesive nature of it. 

In relation to my practice, Frankovich’s practice offers further possibilities into how might display my work - as well as further abstract ways of investigating the body and the bodily, or provoking a bodily engagement/experience with the work. Her wide use of materials also makes me think about my own selection and how this has recently expanded and developed to include things that have a smell (such as her use of food etc)....

At first, the world is nothing but sky and sea. Florida has a way of tricking the human mind into thinking that. Maybe it’s all the flat marshland, or the gently rolling, sun-limned waves of the Atlantic breaking in some undefined distance. A crescent of birds glides low over the horizon, winged silhouettes picked out by the morning sun; trawlers and fishing boats flock in cliques, shimmering from across the expanse of water between you. 

There’s nothing to suggest that anything out of the ordinary is going on. Except, perhaps, for the muffled boom of a synthesised voice, and the metallic speck of a launch gantry to the east. 

The rolling mumble of the countdown passes thirty. Your pulse picks up, thundering in your ears and drying the saliva on your tongue. It’s a superb rush, the thrall countdowns have over us, like some inbuilt genetic instinct. Gooseflesh prickles your forearm: you resist the urge to cheer in excitement. 

At T-minus sixteen, a faint whoosh is heard: miles away, hundreds of thousands of gallons of water are cascading into the trenches under the pad, to protect the fragile tangle of aluminium alloys and their squishy human payload from the coming storm; ten seconds later, the main engines start up. A dirty white explosion slams meaty fists against the crust of the Earth, a boiling crescendo of chemical energy. Three sequential blasts of percussion hurl themselves through the spring morning, like a punk rocker slamming their head into the world’s biggest drumkit. To call it a sound implies some sort of pattern, some kind of distinguishing feature to the ear. This is pure noise; raw energy that rattles your teeth in their sockets, pulses through the ground, accelerates the senses, and it is glorious.  

You’re so busy getting lost in your audial maelstrom that you don’t notice the countdown ending. Checklists are primed, sequencing systems chime, and the immense bulk of the two white solid rocket boosters wake up, shrouded in steam. Half a million tons of ammonium perchlorate and atomized aluminium powder are compressed, ignited and forced out of the boosters’ gaping engine bells. The world seems to take a collective breath in preparation.  

Then it screams. 

It’s a cacophony that defies explanation: it’s as if Heaven, Hell, the judge and the devil have all broken loose and started to argue.  

The speck resolves itself into two objects; the reeling, steaming obelisk of the launch tower and an orange-white winged arrow the size of an apartment block, hurled overarm into the sky. Gravity’s inexorable claim to her subjects is shrugged off like a surly child batting away a parent’s hand: the entire stack is propelled into the air, a two-thousand-ton lead at the end of a shimmering pencil of white vapour. It’s so bright and blinding that it seems to steal the colour out of the world. 

Dimly, you’re aware that you’re hollering and whooping like an idiot at the top of your lungs, an instinctive primal competition with the peals of man-made thunder rippling through the sky, to no avail. You wish you could control your trembling hands and juddering legs to take a photo like you planned, but in reality, you know it would be pointless. No matchbook-sized rectangle of coloured celluloid could ever hope to encapsulate this fistful of moments.  

The Shuttle is already miles downwind, orange external tank glistening in the sun, tearing the atmosphere aside as it climbs to space. You can’t decide whether to laugh or cry, so you stand there dumbly, listening to the ringing in your ears and watching all the shades of blue seep back into the sky.
